Essay on: rivers in nepal.

Rivers in Nepal

M oving mass of water which flows from high land to low land is called river. Rivers begin or rise to flow from mountains or lakes. They flow through mountains, rocks and plain lands. They finally fall in to the sea or some other river. There are a large number of rivers in Nepal. Most of them rise from Himalayas or high mountains. However, some come from the mountain tops. Most of the rivers in Nepal start from snow-capped mountains so they flow continuously. These rivers are permanent in flowing water.

A few names of such rivers are: Koshi, Tamor, Gandaki, Karnali, Arun, Trisuli, Rapti,Sunkoshi, Narayani, Seti etc. Koshi is the biggest, Gandaki is the deepest and Karnali is the longest of all these rivers in Nepal. We all are rich in water resource. We can make good income from these rivers. However, only a little part of water resource is in proper usage. It is unfortunate that most of the water flows down uselessly.

Rivers are very useful. They have many advantages. some of their advantages are given as follows. We can irrigate our fields from the water of rivers. People can use the water of rivers as drinking water. We can get fish from rivers. The rivers of Nepal are very effective to produce hydro-electricity. We can row boat and raft along the rivers. Rivers can create some problems also. Flooding is one of the most dangerous problems caused by river.

Essay on My Country Nepal | 700+ Words

Essay on My Country Nepal

Essay on My Country Nepal | Paragraph Writing 600+ Words

My country is the land of diversity and is very unique. My country Nepal lies in the Southern part of Asia. It is surrounded by two powerful countries India and China and is landlocked. It has an area of about 147,516 sq. kilometers. Although small, my country is diverse both in terms of geography and culture. It is like a beautiful garden with many people from different backgrounds. It is a country with a variety of castes and cultures.

Nepal’s flag is also the most unique to the world. Our country’s flag stands out among the rest due to its shape. The colors and symbols of our flag also represent the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.

In my country Nepal, we can find places with altitudes ranging from as low as 70 meters to the highest peak in the world 8848 meters. It is divided into 3 regions Terai, Pahad, and Himal with the temperature of the place varying from hot to cold. Each region has its own specialty. Nepal’s Himalayan regions have high and mighty mountain ranges that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country Nepal.

For You: Essay on Importance of English Language

The Hilly region is full of green hills and a very cool temperature to live in. It has many historical and religious places. Terai too is mostly a flat stretch of land with fertile soil. It is the granary of Nepal where most crops are grown. It is also an industrial region of our country.

The flora and fauna of my country are also very diverse. The difference in altitudes makes our country have various ecosystems. Foreigners from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s reach of flora and fauna, rivers, lakes, cliffs, waterfalls, snowcapped mountains, and many other beautiful landscapes. The natural beauty of my country Nepal is difficult to find in other places.

Our country also has sites of great religious and historical importance where thousands of pilgrims visit every year. Places like Pashupatinath, Muktinath, Lumbini, Swyambunath, etc are very popular. It is already a pride to have come from such a country.

Essay on My Country Nepal

Our country also ranks in the top 5 for water resources. For such a small country to have rich water resources it is a boon. If fully utilized we can provide electricity to other countries too. Important personalities like King Janak, Gautam Buddha, Arniko, Bhrikuti were also born in Nepal. They all carry historical and religious importance even up to date. Our country’s warriors and commanders are still known today for their bravery and courage. It is also the reason our country never has to celebrate independence day as we never were colonized.

Nepal is also blessed with people of different backgrounds and ethnicity. In the past, many people had migrated to Nepal and settled here and hence the diversity. My country Nepal is also secular and respects all religions equally despite the numbers. There are 126 castes in Nepal and behind them, every culture has its significance. Each culture has its unique festivals and traditions. People also celebrate each other’s festivals with great fun. Nepali people are known for their hospitality and friendliness too.

But even after nature blessing our country, we have not been able to fully utilize it. Problems such as corruption and political instability run deep in the country. Our natural resources are not being taken care of properly and our country is being poor day by day. People are rich but the country is poor. Poverty is also seen in our country. Lack of proper management of wastes has also polluted our water and slowly destroying our forests. This also means our plants and animals are slowly being extinct. Illegal hunting and farming of precious animals and plants are also ruining our ecosystem.

This is why to save our country from further danger and poverty proper management and a responsible leader are required. The citizens of our country should also feel responsible for the country and not only blame the leaders. Proper plans and policies should be required to protect our resources. Social evils such as discrimination should also be tackled. Conservative-minded people should be given awareness and strict punishments for corruption and other illegal acts should be given. Employment opportunities should also be created as many people are leaving the country for jobs abroad.

Garbage collection business in Kenya

Jakub Borowiec

One of the most pressing concerns in Kenya today is how to cope with the city’s ever-increasing domestic wastes. The majority of city residents have heard stories of piles of uncollected rubbish in their communities, with inhabitants in low-income regions being the most impacted. The threat has now spread to several portions of the high-end properties. The situation is similar on several city center streets, where waste mounds have been left unaddressed for weeks. This usually causes inconvenience to pedestrians and pollution to the environment.

The administration seems to recognize that the pace at which the city’s citizens generate garbage surpasses their ability to handle it. Given how much we all enjoy our lives; this is a major cause for concern. Taking a large amount of garbage and turning it into a consumable product is both a good deed and a profitable venture. The waste treatment industry’s income is increasing in lockstep with the expanding trash. As a result, tenacious entrepreneurs are flocking to the business and contributing to a favorable social effect in Kenya. Thus, we have made this article on the Garbage collection business in Kenya. Read along as we explore the hidden wealth inside the garbage.

How to start a garbage collection business in Kenya

Garbage dump

Africa creates approximately 70 million tons of garbage each year, as per the World Bank. Kenya accounts for a significant amount of this. As the ordinary Kenyan’s income and purchasing power rises, more things will be consumed, resulting in even more waste. As Kenya’s economy continues to grow and the size and population of its regions expands, the amount of garbage produced is predicted to quadruple in the coming years.

A few astute businesses are converting the massive garbage they generate on a daily basis into profitable goods. It’s such a wonderful concept that benefits both your wallet and the environment! Starting a garbage collection business in Kenya might be an ambitious side job if you’re sturdy and own or can finance a pickup truck or a big van. You could even make a full-time career out of it. There are numerous ways to generate money. This spans from moving individuals and their possessions to those who want to get rid of items and companies that don’t want to pay extra expenses for dumpsters. Come along as we explore the steps on how to start a garbage collection business in Kenya:

1. Locate your vehicle

You’ll need a car when starting a garbage collection business in Kenya. It’s ideal if you can get a huge van or pickup vehicle, but your best bet is to locate a trash truck. Find a secondhand van or vehicle and inquire about the proper business insurance. This is also a good moment to double-check that your own healthcare is protected for this venture.

2. Consider your equipment requirements

If you have a truck, heavy straps will be required to secure the waste. If you have manual trucks, you’ll find that they’re really useful since they allow you to carry hundreds of pounds at once. A ramp that stretches from the ground to the rear of your car may be built or purchased. This will make it easier for you to roll or carry trash up with the handcart. You may also gather a number of old blankets to wrap sensitive objects with. Don’t forget to use packing tape to secure your packages. In case you need to disassemble anything, have a common toolbox in your car.

3. Make a business plan.

Every undertaking necessitates the creation of a business strategy. In the garbage collection business plan in Kenya, state your intention to start the business, your target market, why your business will be successful, and the business’s features. After that, decide on a pricing plan, a company strategy, and the startup expenses. Finally, there’s the question of how to raise capital for the company. This is also an essential section when drafting a garbage collection business plan in Kenya.

4. Obtain the Required Licenses

In Kenya, each state has its own set of laws and regulations for garbage collection companies. To find out what permissions you may need and how much they can cost, contact the organizations that handle collection and disposal in your state. Garbage collection firms in Kenya, for instance, must get commercial hauling business licenses in several states.

Your gear, facilities, and intended operating techniques will very certainly be inspected by your state. Also, check with your state agencies for rules on authorized dumping methods.

5. Purchase a mobile phone

Nothing is more frustrating than establishing a company and not being able to hear the phone ring. Consider what would happen if your phone didn’t ring because you hadn’t paid your bill or if it was damaged. It’s a good idea to obtain a phone that your prospective customers can use to reach you. It’s also a good idea to buy phone protection in case it is lost or breaks while you’re on the job.

6. Establish a Web Presence

You don’t need a website right away when starting a garbage collection business in Kenya, but social networking is critical. Another option for people to locate and employ you is to create a Facebook profile under your company name. Make sure to request that your customers suggest you, since virtual word-of-mouth is quite important.

7. Perform market research

Before entering the market, you need to have a general sense of how things are going, who your possible rivals are, and what the costing is like. Gather this data and compare it to your expenses. As a result, you’ll have a rough notion of how much money you’ll make. If the competitiveness in a certain area is too fierce, try changing directions and starting a firm in a different sector. Pay close attention to various types of businesses and, as a result, concentrate on a single one.

After that, you should determine whether the waste collection market is large enough to meet your needs. Examine local rubbish removal businesses and speak with entrepreneurs that operate in various cities to learn more. Because they are afraid of attracting new competition, local entrepreneurs are hesitant to share business knowledge. In the next part, we’ll showcase various waste collection businesses in Nairobi to assist you. It’s also a good idea to figure out where you’ll be getting your garbage, such as a landfill, scrap merchants, or junk haulers.

The types of waste that accumulate as a result of our everyday activities are almost endless. Trash materials are deposited irresponsibly near residential structures, drainage systems, water bodies, and makeshift landfills where there is hardly any waste management, particularly in metropolitan areas, resulting in environmental contamination. Many individuals are unaware that the stench of their garbage has a great deal of value! Waste or trash collecting is one of these attractive options. At this point, the above highlight on how to start a garbage collection business in Kenya will aid you immensely.

How to Start Garbage Collection Business in Kenya in 2023

Garbage Collection stopped being a thing of the government once the service was devolved in Kenya. Since then, private entities have come in to offer the service to towns and estates alike.

With those changes,  many Kenyans have stepped forward to take up the opportunity and exploit the market gap.

Do you know what all that has resulted in?

The Garbage Collection Business has grown into a very popular venture and is now, among the most profitable businesses in Kenya in 2023.

Remember, the garbage collection business is still not that overcrowded and so many market gaps are still available to exploit.

I know you are now dying to have your own Garbage Collection Company launched tomorrow.

But give that thought a break.

Let’s first discuss what really is required of you, how much capital is required, where best to locate your business, and just how profitable the venture can be, among other important issues in the business.

What’s the best location for a garbage collection business in Kenya?

For your garbage collection business, of course, you need to base your operations on places where there is so much garbage to collect.

Rural areas are most of the time so clean and green that you can almost find nothing to call garbage to collect. Urban areas and major towns, however, have the garbage collection burden and that is where to thrive.

Identify certain estates around town, which are well populated and occupied so that there will be reasonable garbage to collect every week, month, or even for years.

Once you have done this you then have your location right. Keep expanding and covering more estates and homes.

Need an office?

Maybe as you grow, for bookings and any other ways in which you may be of help to your existing and new clients. This can be located in a strategic place in town like along a busy street or close to estates and homes.

Requirements to Start Garbage Collection Business

What really is expected of you if you will make a dime out of this lucrative Garbage Collection Business? Below are some of the requirements:-

  • Carry out market research  – go around and see where your services will be of much help. Estates and homes where county government garbage collectors never reach or are inconsistent are the best for you.
  • Agree with each house on collection fee  – in the areas you have identified, then if really they need your services, agree with them on the fee they will be paying say monthly and that will be your first milestone in success. Do not overcharge because of competition or undercharge to a level where you won’t be making anything.
  • Identify a truck you can hire  – you may not need to buy your own truck but if you got the cash then why not. So if there is a truck you can hire only for the days you need it as you grow your business then that will cut on initial costs.
  • Identify reliable people you can hire  – you may not need permanent employees. Identify some people you can mobilize when you need them on a particular day of work and that will be okay.
  • Acquire the relevant licenses as follows:
  • County Council Single Business Permit  – this costs about Ksh.5,000 – Ksh.10,000 per year depending on your county. Enquire there as you get the permit from the town zoning department on the practicality and how you can go about garbage collection in the area you intend to.
  • NEMA License  – National Environmental Management Authority will need to issue you a Garbage Collector’s License and to do so, you may be required to show the logbook to the truck you will be using which should be enclosed.
  • Approval by authorities  – you can’t just invade the area to begin collecting garbage when the community leaders like the chief, assistant chief, nyumba Kumi leaders are not aware. You need to inform them and get their approval and support. This is all for security purposes in case of anything.
  • Approval by landlords  – Meet the landlord or caretaker of every estate or residential area you identified during your market research and talk to them about your services. They will help mobilize tenants to put their garbage in a particular place on the scheduled days and collect the fees from the tenants as they collect rent.
  • Ensure every house has Garbage bins and bags  – you can provide these to the tenants who do not have them to put their garbage, at a retail price. This will make your collection easy on the day of work.
  • Identify a dumping site or Recycling site  – talk to the county government so you can be dumping your garbage in one of their recycling sites. If you can make your own recycling site then why not.
  • Start your business and adhere to your agreements with your clients. Offer services as agreed and be reliable as you expand your business.

You must be wondering just how much is enough to begin this business.

  • Licensing – Ksh.10,000
  • Truck hire – Ksh.5,000
  • Employees – Ksh.5,000

You can see that with as low as Ksh.20,000 you are already in business. If you have enough money you can do it on a large scale and you will need much more though.

How profitable is this Garbage Collection Business?

In an estate that is so populous and occupied, let’s say it has 100 tenants and each contributes Ksh.150.

That makes Ksh.15,000 per estate.

Go to 10 estates of such nature and you already have Ksh.150,000. Pay your employees and the truck and you have the difference all to yourself.

It is going to give a basic understanding of what your company does and the structure of your business.

Now, on that first overview page of your business plan, you want to include

  • Your business structure
  • Location, that is where you do business and also
  • A brief description of exactly what your company actually does.

The next piece of information for your company’s overview is your business’s mission, which is really important.

Here is why;

The business mission is the driving force behind your business plan in Kenya.

It is what all your plans are focused on achieving and if you don’t have a mission’s like trying to make plans to reach a goal without having the goal.

So make sure you don’t skip this step.

The final component of the overview page is your chart of accountability.

This chart describes who is accountable for which of the major tasks involved in running the business.

And the three main areas of accountability in most businesses are

  • Who are those customers
  • How do you fit into their lives and
  • How can you help them solve a problem that they are facing and create a result that they are looking for.

Here are the questions that you will want to answer on this page of your business plan

  • What problem does your company solve for your customers
  • What result does your company create for those customers
  • How does your company create those results
  • Who does your company serve
  • Why do you do what you do
  • Why should your customers choose you over your competition
  • What is your company’s step by step plan for creating those results for the customer or what is your proprietary system

This both helps to answer the question of what sets you apart from your competition

It also shows your customers how you are going to create those results that you are promising.

By making this clear, you are instilling confidence in your ability to create the results.

This page focuses on marketing and generating sales.

First, you will want to define your target market by their demography and psychographics.

Demographics are attributes such as their age, income, where they live.

On the other hand, psychographics has to do with their interests, desires, and fears.

Here, you will also want to include an estimated size of your target market .

More importantly, where you have identified that you can find groups of those target customers.

Here is a little big hint;

If you haven’t yet figured out where you can find groups of those customers be it online or off, you are probably going to have trouble successfully marketing your product or service.

So if you come to this part in the business plan and don’t know what to put here, stop and do some digging.

Make sure that YOU can find this customer you have defined here.

If you can’t, you might want to consider redefining that target customer and pivoting your marketing position.

The final three pieces of information that you can include on this page of your business plan are

  • Your visibility strategy. This explains how people will first learn about your brand and your products
  • Your lead generation strategy, which explains how you will establish contact with the people who have discovered your brand
  • Your conversion strategy, which is essentially your sales strategy. Explain how you will turn those leads you’ve generated into paying customers.

Here is a quick heads up;

As you are working through this business plan, it’s more than likely that you won’t know the answers to all of these questions.

And you won’t have all these things figured out yet.

I just want to let you know that that is completely alright.

And actually, one of the main purposes of writing your business plan is to become aware of things you haven’t thought about yet or haven’t figured out.

Because only once you are aware of what you don’t know, you will be able to think through it.

Don’t put off writing the business plan in Kenya just because you don’t know everything yet.

Rather, write the business plan so that you can get very clear on exactly what you know and need to figure out.

Page #4. Product

business plan in kenya now

This page describes the product or products that you sell.

To clarify, a product could be a physical product or a digital product or service.

I highly recommend that you choose just one product as your business’s primary product.

You might be selling several different things, so determine what your main product is that you are going to center your business’s marketing message around.

Many different parts of your business development will be much easier if you do have one product that is the focus.

Now, on this page of the business plan, start by identifying

  • what that product is and then
  • describing the result that the product creates.

Here’s a little SECRET;

What your business sells is really the result your product creates not the product itself.

After describing the results, describe the impact the product creates.

This is different than the result itself.

It’s instead how the customers’ life is affected by the result of the product.

For example;

If your product is a vacuum cleaner, then the result the product creates is clean floors.

But the impact of the product is that your prospect feels better about the state of their house.

Now they have a cleaner, healthier living environment and perhaps feel more confident inviting some company.

Once you have described those three things for your main product, you can move on to other products that your company sells and do the same.

Page #5. Goals

business plan

The final page of your business success plan has to do with your goals.

If you have looked at any examples of business plans in the past or read a guide on how to write a business plan in Kenya, you might have seen a section that focused on projections.

  • sales projections or
  • new customer acquisition projections, or
  • market share projections

And if you’ve tried to write a business plan in Kenya in the past and you tried to write this section, you may have found it very difficult.

Chances are that is because you are running a small business in Kenya or maybe you have just started your business.

Truth is, it is really difficult to make accurate projections or projections at all for that matter if you don’t have any data to base them on.

And that is why I’d recommend that instead of trying to create projections, you simply set goals if you are just starting your company or have only been in business for a couple of years.

You can decide exactly how long you want to make your goals for.

But a good place to start would be to set some one-year goals and also some five-year goals.

This way you know what you need to work on right now but you also know where you are aiming long term.

For each time frame, you can set whatever goals you’d like.

However, some that I might recommend;

  • number of sales total revenue
  • Profit
  • impact in terms of the number of customers who you help or how wide you spread your message and
  • Development, could be the extent to which you have advanced the product that you create and offer or to what extent you have built your company.

And of course, when setting goals, it is always important to set specific, measurable goals and a deadline for when you plan to reach them.

Final thoughts on creating a business plan in Kenya

All right, that is everything you need to include in your business plan in Kenya.

As you can see, they are simple pages and you probably already know most of the information that will be going into this business plan.

There are many other pieces of information that you may want to include in your business plan

You are more than welcome to include any relevant information that describes how you successfully run you and how you plan to reach your goals.

Here is my final piece of advice for you;

Make sure that you don’t overcomplicate things.

More words are not better.

In fact, your business plan in Kenya will be the most useful if you keep it short and relatively simple.

If you write a document that’s 20 40 or more pages long, chances are high that nobody will ever go back and read it again.

A business plan is a written document that describes your business, its objectives and strategies, and how you will achieve them. It outlines your marketing plan, financial projections, and operational procedures.

A business plan is important because it helps potential investors or lenders understand your business concept, objectives, and strategies. It also gives an overview of the financial viability of the business and helps you analyze potential risks.

A business plan should include a summary of your business concept, products and services, market segment, target consumers, marketing plan, financial plan, including cash flow statement, balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and sales forecast, operational procedures, personnel, infrastructure, and ownership.

The cost of writing a business plan varies depending on the complexity of the business and the depth of the analysis required. On average, it can range from KES 10,000 to KES 50,000.

Every business owner, whether an established entrepreneur or a startup, should write a business plan. It is a crucial document required to give potential investors an overview of the business and its financial viability.

To attract an investor with your business plan, you need to clearly define your business concept, market segment, target consumers, and marketing plan. You should also provide financial projections, including the required investment and the expected return on investment.

The purpose of a financial plan in a business plan is to provide an overview of the business’s financial viability. It includes cash flow statement, balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and sales forecast.

To write a marketing plan for your business, you’ll need to analyze your market segment, determine your target consumers, and define your promotional, advertising, and sales strategies to attract and retain them. You should also set objectives and strict budgets for your promotion and advertising activities.

You should update your business plan constantly to reflect changes in your business environment, like increased competition, new regulations, or changes in your products or services. You should review and update it at least once a year, or whenever significant changes occur.

A profit and loss statement is a financial statement that shows the revenues, expenses, and net income or loss of a business for a specific period, usually monthly or annually. It helps business owners analyze their profit margins and identify areas where they can cut costs and increase revenue.

Yes, every business needs insurance to protect its assets, employees, and customers. You should consider insurance options, like liability insurance, property insurance, or workers’ compensation insurance, depending on your business operations and risks.

Route Optimization and Planning

How to start a waste collection business [2024 guide].

Blog post hero image

As a  $52 billion industry  with a 1.4% year-over-year growth rate since 2015, the waste management industry provides a massive opportunity for entrepreneurs and those looking for a scalable side hustle. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States produces over  292 million tons of waste per year  (or 4.9lbs/day per American). Additionally, with the economy rebounding after the COVID-19 pandemic, that number is expected to increase.

There hasn’t been a better time to start a waste collection business. Savvy entrepreneurs and ambitious side-hustlers can turn cash into profit with a bit of business know-how and the proper tools and software.

In this article, we’ll cover six essential steps to starting a waste collection business then we will show you how using route optimization software sets you up to expand and scale your business easily.

Step 1: Choose a Waste Industry Sector

Step 2: craft a simple business plan, step 3: register your business and obtain the proper permits, step 4: purchase the necessary equipment, step 5: advertise your waste collection business, step 6: plan the most efficient routes for your waste collection team.

Not all garbage is created equal. The first step in starting a waste management business is to choose what types of waste materials you want to collect and transport.

Different industries require different types of waste management. Some of these industries are:

  • Medical : Waste from healthcare facilities, such as nursing facilities, dental offices, hospitals, veterinary clinics, etc.
  • Construction : Waste generated from construction sites, often containing hazardous materials such as paint, asbestos, plaster, and other elements that require specialized removal
  • Electronic : Discarded electronic devices, such as household appliances, lamps, toys, computers, medical devices, batteries, etc.
  • Green : Organic waste that can be composted, such as garden and yard clippings
  • Animal/pet : Yard droppings and waste from litter boxes, equestrian or marine facilities, etc.
  • Industrial : Material waste from factories, mines, and mills, oftentimes hazardous material requiring specialized removal
  • Nuclear : An up and coming industry requiring waste removal from nuclear power facilities

If you’re struggling to decide which industry is right for you, research the waste needs in your local area or the region you plan on doing business.

garbage collection business plan in kenya

Every businesses needs to start with a solid business plan. By first sitting down and writing out your goals and plans, you can bypass a lot of the hazy frustration that often accompanies starting a new business. Plus, you’ll have a document you can reference to make sure your business is on track and heading in the right direction as it grows.

Some questions to consider when crafting your business plan:

  • What is your  business structure  (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, incorporated)?
  • What are the tangible goals and objectives for your waste management business?
  • Who is your target customer, and what specific problem are you helping them solve?
  • Do you have any competitors in your particular industry? How is your service different or better?
  • What does your pricing look like in comparison with other waste collection and management businesses?
  • How will you market and grow your business?
  • What do your startup costs look like?

For help thinking through and crafting your waste collection business plan, check out some resources offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration on  business plans ,  how to conduct market research and competitive analysis , and how to  calculate startup costs .

Once you’ve chosen your industry and written up a business plan, it’s time to make your business official. Check your state and local government regulations to see which permits you’ll need to operate your waste collection business on both a legal and operational level.

Depending on the structure of your business, you may first need to register your business with the  local, state, and federal government . At the very least, you will need to obtain an  Employer Identification Number  from the IRS to keep track of tax information. Then, consult your local and state environmental and waste industries for what permits you might need to transport waste and use the appropriate landfills and waste management facilities.

California, for example, requires medical waste  transporters  to register with the California Department of Public Health, obtain a Hazardous Waste Registration certificate, and carry liability insurance.

On the other side of the country, New York requires construction debris haulers to obtain a license from the city and a  Waste Transporter Permit  from the state. They also need to obtain a registration for the removal of  Construction and Demolition Debris .

Don’t make the mistake of skipping this critical step! The quickest way to send your new business to the dump is to run it illegally.

You don’t need to own a huge trash truck to run a successful waste collection business. As long as you have a mid- to full-size van or pickup truck, you’re in business. However, depending on the industry you choose to serve, consider additional equipment to help you easily (and safely) get the job done.

Here’s a quick list of some additional gear you may want to invest in before you start:

  • Heavy-duty gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Masks/respirators
  • Brooms and dustpans
  • Trash bags and cans
  • Dumpster and compactor
  • Cleaning and sanitation equipment
  • Vehicle maintenance kit

The last thing you want is to get to a pickup site and not have the right gear on hand. Always take an inventory of what each route or worksite will require, then plan accordingly.

Without customers, your waste management business will stay in the dumps. Grow your customer base with a solid online presence and in-person networking.

Build a solid online presence

Your website, Google My Business listing, social media platforms, and paid advertising are critical for your business success. Here are four steps to start building out a solid online presence:

  • Use a website builder like  Wix  to quickly create a professional website without having to hire a web designer or know a bit of code.
  • Set up a  Google My Business  page (like the one below) to place your business on the map and show up in local online search listings (remember to keep your  name, address, and phone number consistent  on all your digital platforms!).
  • Create a  Facebook Business Page  to start building a personal vibe around your business.
  • And finally, consider using paid advertising like  Google Ads  and  Facebook Ads  to quickly get your new waste collection business in front of relevant audiences.

Shake hands with customers and local businesses

In-person networking is a surefire way to drum up customers for your new waste management business. Design business cards and flyers that you can hand out to prospective customers whenever you get the chance. Then, depending on the industry you chose in Step 1, target local businesses that would benefit from your services and connect with them in person. Even if those businesses don’t hire you now, leaving a personal, positive impression will put you at the top of their minds in the future.

Good news! Your business is starting to gain some traction, and new customers are signing up for your service. But as you look at the maps to figure out the most efficient route for waste pickups and landfill runs, you might start scratching your head, wondering which route is the best. Plus, every new customer who signs up means you have to revisit the map and rework the route.

Why not let our software plan out the perfect route instead?

With  OptimoRoute , simply input your customers’ addresses and instantly receive the most time- and cost-effective pickup and drop-off routes for you and your entire team. By implementing route optimization software into your operations early on, you are all set to expand and scale your business. With route optimization software you can route hundreds of stops for a large fleet without spending much more time planning.

Waste collection businesses, small and large, can save time, money, and map-induced headaches using OptimoRoute.

Doody Calls  — a pet waste management company based in Charlottesville, Virginia — needed a way to plan their routes while maintaining flexibility for “rush jobs” that popped up throughout the day. With an average of 30 stops per day, using OptimoRoute enabled management to efficiently move their technicians from site to site, saving them nearly an hour of work (and payroll expenses) per day.

On the larger side of the waste collection spectrum, the  Solid Waste Services Department  (SWS) of Charlotte, North Carolina, faced the challenge of planning 2,000 daily routes for their 15 vehicle fleet. This used to take them six man-hours per day. Now it only takes two, and each truck and driver is specifically equipped to handle their routes efficiently.

Other OptimoRoute features include:

  • A complete web and app-based experience. No clunky software or equipment to install.
  • A driver’s app that updates locations and destinations in real time. No more Excel printouts or having to manually input addresses in your phone.
  • A “No U-Turn” and “Same Side of Street” feature that keeps technicians from having to pull time-consuming U-turns or dangerously run across the street to collect trash.
  • Live Tracking lets dispatchers see the location of technicians in real time.
  • Proof of Service feature lets drivers take and upload onsite photos of finished jobs.
  • Last-minute change functions let you seamlessly add or subtract addresses and instantly update your route.

Optimization Is the Key to Success

The most successful waste collection and management businesses know the secret to a profitable business lies in optimizing their routes to reach the highest number of customers in the most time- and cost-effective way possible. The last place you want to be when starting an exciting new business is stuck behind maps and spreadsheets, frantically trying to calculate different routes. Let OptimoRoute find the perfect route for your business every time and start turning trash into cash.

Waithera, 42, reportedly sold her land over 20 years ago and went to Nairobi with KSh 5,000.

4. Nzambi Matee

After getting tired of the plastic nuisance in Kenyan towns and villages, Nzambi Matee felt enough was enough and swung into action.

The award-winning Kenyan entrepreneur saw an opportunity to recycle the plastic waste into bricks, stronger than concrete.

In a video shared by the United Nations (UN), Matee talked about what motivated her to start Gjenge Makers, a social enterprise whose aim is to address the need for sustainable and affordable alternative construction materials.

"For me, I was just tired of being on the sidelines of seeing plastic. I really jumped in, off a cliff without a parachute. I was building it as I was falling down but isn't that how great things are done? So act for nature," Matee said.

Jimmy Wanjigi empire

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported businessman Jimmy Wanjigi said his journey began when he first became a proprietor of a private garbage collection firm that he said paid off in just less than a year into its launch.

He stated that back in the day, he capitalised on his European friends who helped him acquire his first pickup with which he conducted the business.

After a few months, he said, the business looked up, laying the foundation for the multi-billion empire known today on his name.

From waste pickers to suppliers: a community-based recycling project to create value in kenya..

Nowadays, the humanitarian community is thriving to embed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cross-cutting policies on sustainability in its programmes and operations. It’s exciting to see so many organizations exploring solutions to contribute to achieve one or more SDG, partnering to deliver on common objectives. With this objective in mind, the Danish Refugee Council started looking into responsible production and consumption mechanisms and circular economy business models enabling the creation of value chains for vulnerable populations and reduce plastic waste volumes.

Humanitarian operations largely take part in places with lacking waste management infrastructure, where managing plastic waste is challenging in the best contexts, and near impossible in most – leading to disposal by landfill or worse, burning which creates toxic gases and affects the health and wellbeing of local communities. However, not every context is the same and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has, by collaborating with local stakeholders, been able to launch an innovative project in Kenya to make sure that plastic packaging not only doesn’t end up in landfills, but also becomes a precious resource: that’s what the Fair Recycling Project is about!

The Fair Recycling Project

The Fair Recycling Project aims at creating an inclusive plastic recycling ecosystem in Kenya for informal workers and refugees. It represents a collaborative effort between DRC, Mr. Green Africa, and Unilever: those partners cover the whole plastics recycling value chain and aim to completely transform Kenya’s plastic waste collection sector in the next 10 years. They plan to collectively achieve this goal by engaging the local communities, creating jobs and providing training. The creation of waste-picker jobs has served to formalize a previously informal job sector in these communities, resulting in increased income, decent jobs, and safer work conditions.

The partners all bring their own unique flavor to the project: DRC brings in its long and wide experience in working with refugees and host communities, Mr. Green Africa brings their experience in sourcing and processing of locally collected plastic wastes into high quality post-consumer recyclables at par with virgin plastics, and Unilever provides a steady market for the Post-Consumer Recycled materials to create products used across Kenya and beyond.

Voices from the field: the experiences of Francis and Rukundo

Francis , *47, from Kariobangi North *- Dandora area started picking waste using a back-carried sack and selling it in 2016 to make money and a living. He used to work for over 12 hours, starting at 6AM and returning home around 7PM completely exhausted. The following year, he realized that he could upscale this activity by buying and aggregating plastic waste from other small waste pickers, understanding that higher volumes of plastic wastes fetched higher prices. He ventured into the tier as a medium-scale operator and benefitted from capacity building with respect to business skills and financial management from Mr. Green Africa. Coincidentally, at this time, Mr. Green Africa was also supporting waste-pickers with a small loan facility ranging from Kshs 5,000 – 30,000. Thanks to the waste volumes collected by his business, he was able to secure a Kshs 30,000 loan, with which he was able to open a store where he would receive plastic waste types from smaller dealers whom he would pay between Kshs 15 – 20 per Kg – buying up to 800 kg of waste per week until the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. Having transitioned to a medium-scale business in the last 6 years now, he has been able to provide for his family and purchase a plot where he intends to put up his home, identifying plastic waste collection as a viable business opportunity despite its numerous challenges and accessing loans from banks or microfinance institutions. Drawing from his personal experience, he wishes that other small-scale pickers could migrate to the second tier of medium-scale if they accessed loans. His future plan is to grow into a large-scale supplier benefiting from economies of scale.

Rukundo is a 33-year-old Burundian refugee who came to Kenya on 26th June 2019 after running away from the ravaging war in Burundi. He heard and was inspired to venture into the plastic collection business during a forum about the *Fair Recycling Project *organized by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in March 2022. In the framework of the Fair Recycling project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark under DANIDA Market Development Partnerships (DMMDP), he later received training on the basic Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as rolled out by DRC jointly with Mr. Green Africa (MGA). The training allowed him and other waste pickers to gain expertise on the objective of the project, the value of plastics, required plastics, tips to acquire plastics and plastic pricing schemes. Since he understood the value chain of plastics, Rukundo started collecting and selling plastic materials: in only one week, he was able to collect 46 Kg of plastics which he sold at one of MGA’s trading points in Kawangware earning KES 1,104. In addition, he was given the DRC-MGA Client registration card and a packaging sack for his products which has been a motivation for him to continue with the business. He is determined to grow and move to tier 2 within a span of three months and he now encourages fellow refugees to follow his path and understand that plastic should be seen as a resource instead of waste.

The 3-year project aims at integrating informal and marginalized waste pickers, including refugees, in a formalized plastics recycling value chain, resulting in increased income, decent jobs and safer work conditions.

Steps have been made to turn plastic waste collection and recycling into a feasible and inclusive business case in Nairobi that addresses important topics, such as fair prices and formalization of waste pickers in the value chain. Mr. Green Africa is already promoting opportunities through different employment levels (part of the integrated project design) from its base of waste pickers. In other words, the integrated planning of the project is already resulting in increased employment opportunities for the community, with more responsibility and promotions available for the most ambitious waste pickers.

DRC is currently in the process of conducting a feasibility study in Kakuma to validate the project assumptions that would allow Mr. Green Africa to expand its operations in the refugee camp setting. If the assumptions are verified, thereby confirming operational and financial viability, the project partners will aim to source additional funding to scale up operations in the targeted refugee camp and other camp settings throughout Kenya.

1. Nepalese languages

O nce in Nepal , communities remained completely isolated by steep valleys, high mountains and by thick forest, leading to the evolution of many distinct languages, given as 92 in the 2001 census but now put by ethnologue at 124 distinct living languages . This increase in number seems mostly related to distinguishing dialects within larger groups previously thought to belong to a single linguistic community. Ethnologue’s linguistic map for Nepal , reproduced in Figure 1 , shows the hot spot of languages scattered across the country.

The Linguistic Map of Nepal

Fig 1. The Linguistic Map of Nepal.

If we take Trosterud’s suggestion that at least those languages with more than 16,000 speakers should be written, we find that we should expect all languages down to and including Dhimal should be written; this is 28 languages, just under one third of the languages, in line with the proportion in the population of world languages as a whole. Table 3, lists these 28 languages plus two others, with relevant characteristics extracted from Ethnologue. Note that 8 of them have much larger populations across the border in India, with one of these, Maithili, the second largest language of Nepal. This leaves 20 Nepalese languages, only one of which, Nepali , is used in written form in all walks of life and can be considered fully literate; however most of them have at least some limited use in writing.

2. Nepalese writing

However only four of these purely Nepalese languages have any significant tradition of being written:

Ethnologue only reports limited literacy for Newari and Limbu, not surprising since these languages were suppressed by successive Nepalese governments from the late 18th century onwards until 1990. While the writing of Limbu and Lepcha was probably only ever used for special cultural and religious texts, Newar writing was used for a wide range of purposes until the overthrow of their regime by the Gorkhas in the mid 18th century.

Note that cross border languages, and particularly Maithili and Bhojpuri, also have their own mature literature and may be written in their own distinctive script; for Maithili the script is known as Mithilakshar or Tirhuta, for Bhojpuri it is Kaithi.

Indic writing including Devanagari and Bengali has been printed in movable type since around 1800, with the type evolving and being simplified over the centuries. When computers became used for writing and publishing, the encoding of Devanagari and other Indic scripts was undertaken in India, leading to the Indian Script Code for Information Interchange – ISCII. Work had been proposed to include Devanagari within the then established standard for computers, ISO 8859, as part 12, but this work was abandoned expecting to adopt ISCII’s codes into ISO 8859. However ISO 8859 was in turn superseded by Unicode, which included a code block for Devanagari and other major Indic scripts from the start, with the code blocks adapted from a 1988 version of ISCII. One significant difference between ISCII and Unicode was that in ISCII all the scripts of India had been unified within a single table, with the different scripts selected by appropriate font, whereas in Unicode these were dis-unified into separate code blocks.

The encoding of Limbu was added to the Unicode Standard in April 2003 with the release of version 4.0. Limbu was introduced to the standardisation process by McGowan and Everson in 1999, and a proposal was written jointly by Boyd Michaelovsky and Michael Everson in 2002. Michaelovsky is a linguist who has done considerable field research among the Limbu in Nepal learning about their writing in context, appealing in the proposal to both examples of writing and to the phonology of the spoken language. Even so there have been some discussions since then about missing characters, and in 2011 Pandey proposed two additional composite characters, though there is a case for introducing the virama instead.

essay on my country Nepal

Essay on My Country Nepal For Students

If there is a country’s flag that stands out among all other countries it is the flag of Nepal . Our flag is very unique and cannot be compared to other countries’ flags due to its shape. It also has a hidden meaning behind it which represents the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.

My country Nepal is situated between two countries, India and China. Although it is sandwiched between international powers, conflicts have not happened between any, and peace remains. Nepal is a country of various castes and cultures. In other words, it is like a beautiful garden of flowers with people of different ethnicities and backgrounds.

My country Nepal is not only unique for its flag but also its geographical terrain, the variety of castes and cultures you can find, and the rich history of it. It is the land of various great places and important figures that people know far and wide. The temperature here spans from cool to hot and is a heaven for residing in.

There are about 126 castes in Nepal each with its own rich history and culture which makes Nepal a rich place for culture. Some dating back to the millenniums. Not only that, our country is very rich in its geographical terrain. From the lowest point of just 70 Meters from sea level to the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8848.86 meters) , we have temperature scales that vary from place to place. It is divided into three regions, Terai, Hilly, and Himalayas each according to their altitude and geographical differences.

Himalayan regions have high and mighty Himalayas that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country. It is already a great pride to have come from such a country. The diverse flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, lush and green jungles, historical and religious places in Nepal are enough to gather the attention of foreigners and locals too. People from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s snow-capped mountains, rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, other beautiful landscapes, the rich flora and fauna, and sites of great religious and historical importance. It just doesn’t end there.

📌 Read –   Essay on the Importance of English Language

Our country ranks in the top 5 for the richest in water resources. With just a small country with an area of 1,47,181 sq kilometers, it has the potential to fuel hydropower worth 2% of the entire world. It may look small in number but taking our country’s small area in context, it is a potential incomparable to all. The Terai region holds fertile land and smooth flowing waters that are excellent for farming and cultivating.

Nepal is also known as an agricultural country where 60% of the people here follow agriculture as their work. Our country also has huge historical importance. Gautama Buddha the founder and preacher of Buddhism which is practiced worldwide was also born in Nepal. Buddhism is known to preach peace and non-violence and to love everyone. King Janak is also an important figure who holds great importance to communities in Nepal.

Other personalities include Bhrikuti, Araniko, etc. Our country is also known for its bravery. Our country never has to celebrate Independence day as we were never under the rule of any other. We stood and fought against the Britans and other Mongol countries. Brave Gorkhalis were united after a long struggle and fought their way to preserve their country. The courage and bravery of Nepali people are also know world wide. Many brave Gorkhalis went to fight under countries in world wars and won various colors and medals. This brought our country so much respect that we even enjoy it for granted to date.

Although our country’s history, culture, terrains, and achievements make anyone feel proud, the power struggle for the politicians, previous kings, and presidents have made the country weak and fall in the developing country category. Our rich natural resources have not been utilized and we have fallen way behind. Corruption is widely prevalent in our country and the loans we have taken from other countries are in a large number. The amount of food and other materialistic consumption has made Nepal import more and export less.

Our country is poor but the people here are rich. This is because of the corruption and the illegal working/trading that has been done. The government has not made significant progress and the people aren’t responsible. Although I feel proud to be A Nepali, the condition of my country makes me feel bad. People should feel responsible and carry out their duties and not just complain about the government.

The government too should implement proper policies and rules and enforce them accordingly. Utilization of our natural resources should be done in an effective way and social evils such as discrimination according to castes and genders, other superstitions should be slowly removed. Centralized development should stop and we should control the people moving out to other countries with their skills that are wasted abroad. This way we can slowly develop our country.

मेरो देश नेपाल बारे निबन्ध | Mero Desh Nepal bare Nibandha |

 Essay 1

 Essay 6

Anxious Parents Are the Ones Who Need Help

An illustration of a college campus where parents look distressed about their children while the children seem fine.

By Mathilde Ross

Dr. Ross is a senior staff psychiatrist at Boston University Health Services.

This month, across the country, a new cohort of students is being accepted into colleges. And if recent trends continue, the start of the school year will kick off another record-breaking season for anxiety on campus.

I’m talking about the parents. The kids are mostly fine.

Let me explain. Most emotions, even unpleasant ones, are normal. But the word is out about increasing rates of mental health problems on campus, and that’s got parents worrying. Fair enough. The statistics are startling — in 2022, nearly 14 percent of 18-to-25-year-olds reported having serious thoughts about suicide.

But parents are allowing their anxiety to take over, and it’s not helping anyone, least of all their children. If a child calls home too much, there must be a crisis! And if a child calls too little, there must be a crisis! Either way, the panicked parent picks up the phone and calls the college counseling center to talk to someone like me.

I am a psychiatrist who has worked at a major university’s mental health clinic for 16 years. Much of next year’s freshman class was born the year before I started working here. Technically, my job is to keep my door open and help students through crises, big and small. But I have also developed a comprehensive approach to the assessment and treatment of anxious parents.

The typical call from a parent begins like this: “I think my son/daughter is suffering from anxiety.” My typical reply is: “Anxiety in this setting is usually normal, because major life transitions like living away from home for the first time are commonly associated with elevated anxiety.” Parents used to be satisfied with this kind of answer, thanked me, hung up, called their children and encouraged them to think long-term: “This too shall pass.” And most everyone carried on.

But these days this kind of thinking just convinces parents that I don’t know what I’m talking about. In the circular logic of mental health awareness, a clinician’s reassurance that situational anxiety is most likely normal and time-limited leads a parent to believe that the clinician may be missing a serious mental health condition.

Today’s parents are suffering from anxiety about anxiety, which is actually much more serious than anxiety. It’s self-fulfilling and not easily soothed by logic or evidence, such as the knowledge that most everyone adjusts to college just fine.

Anxiety about anxiety has gotten so bad that some parents actually worry if their student isn’t anxious. This puts a lot of pressure on unanxious students — it creates anxiety about anxiety about anxiety. (This happens all the time. Well-meaning parents tell their kid to make an appointment with our office to make sure their adjustment to college is going OK.) If the student says she’s fine, the parents worry that she isn’t being forthright. This is the conundrum of anxiety about anxiety — there’s really no easy way to combat it.

But I do have some advice for parents. The first thing I’d like to say, and I mean it in the kindest possible way, is: Get a grip.

As for your kids, I would like to help you with some age-appropriate remedies. If your child calls during the first weeks of college feeling anxious, consider saying any of the following: You’ll get through this; this is normal; we’ll laugh about this phone call at Thanksgiving. Or, say anything that was helpful to you the last time you started something new. Alternatively, you could say nothing. Just listening really helps. It’s the entire basis of my profession.

If the anxiety is connected to academic performance — for instance, if your child is having difficulty following the professor and thinks everyone in class is smarter — consider saying, “Do the reading.” Several times a semester, a student I’ve counseled tells me he or she discovered the secret to college: Show up for class prepared! This is often whispered rather sheepishly, even though my office is private.

Anxiety about oral presentations is also quite common. You know what I tell students? “Rehearse your speech.” Parents, you can say things like this, too. Practice it: “Son, you wouldn’t believe how helpful practice is.”

I can prepare you for advanced topics, too. Let’s say your child is exhausted and having trouble waking up for class; he thinks he has a medical problem or maybe a sleep disorder. Consider telling him to go to bed earlier. Common sense is still allowed.

What if a roommate is too loud or too quiet, too messy or too neat? Advise your kid to talk to the roommate, to take the conversation to the problem’s source.

If your child is worrying about something more serious, like failing out of college: This is quite common in the first few weeks on campus. Truth be told, failing all of one’s classes and being expelled as a result, all within the first semester, is essentially impossible and is particularly rare among those students who are worrying about it. The administrative process simply doesn’t happen that fast. Besides, you haven’t paid enough tuition yet.

I’m making my job sound easy, and it’s not. I’m making kids sound simple, and they’re not. They are my life’s work. Some kids walk through my door in serious pain. But most don’t. Most just need a responsible adult to show them the way. And most of what I do can be handled by any adult who has been through a thing or two, which is to say, any parent.

I worry that the current obsession with mental health awareness is disempowering parents from helping their adult children handle ordinary things. People are increasingly fearful that any normal emotion is a sign of something serious. But if you send your adult children to a mental health professional at the first sign of distress, you deprive yourself of the opportunity to strengthen your relationship with them. This is the beginning of their adult relationship with you. Show them the way.

The transition to college is full of excitement and its cousin, anxiety. I enjoy shepherding young people through this rite of passage. Parents should try enjoying it, too.

Famed soprano Renée Fleming wants people to better understand the link between music and health.

Musical activities can help nonverbal children speak, aid in recovery after a stroke, and improve the stride of people with Parkinson's, according to research. To spread the word, Fleming edited the new book " Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness ," which features essays by researchers, music therapists and artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Ben Folds and Anna Deveare Smith.

The book’sroots run back to 2015, when Fleming helped launch a collaboration between the Kennedy Center and the National Institutes of Health to explore how the arts and health intersect.

When she first started at the Kennedy Center as an artistic advisor, Fleming attended a Washington, D.C. gathering attended by Supreme Court Justices Anthony Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as well as former NIH Director Francis Collins.

Despite some high tensions after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, Fleming and Collins brought the room together with song.

“Music has historically created social cohesion between people. It happened that night,” Fleming says. “I said, ‘Francis, why are scientists studying music and the brain?’ And he said, ‘well, we're interested in it because we have a new brain institute. And the key is technology because this ability to look at the brain enables scientists to see the exact impact music is having.’”

Two years later, Fleming sat on a panel among scientists, music therapists and fellow artists with the Kennedy Center, the NIH and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work with the organizations inspired her to share with the public what she learned about how the arts affect people.

4 questions with Renée Fleming

How did scanning your brain show the impact of music?

“My brain scan at the NIH was an fMRI scan, functional MRI, which measures blood oxygen in the brain. And it had me singing, speaking and imagining singing. And interestingly, imagining singing, It was by far the most powerful for me. It impacted many more parts of my brain than the other two activities, which was a big surprise to the scientists.

“But they finally said, ‘Well, listen, you're a singer, so it makes sense that that's second nature to you.’ So that was a wonderful experience. It's an opportunity for me to see firsthand how this research is done.

“Imagining singing can also help Parkinson's patients who are having difficulty walking. If they just imagine a rhythmic song in their head, like ‘When the Saints Go Marching In,” they'll be able to cross the street without stopping. It's a simple benefit, but it's very powerful.”

Music psychotherapist Stacie Yeldell writes about a boy who found relief from the pain of sickle cell anemia in the viral song “ The Fox .” What’s the relationship between pain and music?

“Pain is what is very much impacted by music. And in fact, there's a huge focus on research in terms of pain and Joke Bradt's chapter, which is all about that. They don't really know exactly what mechanism is occurring now with that, but they do know music reduces pain.

“I have a friend who actually had a brain bleed and the only thing that alleviated her excruciating pain at first was the loudest possible music she could play.  So, it's possible that that's what was interrupting his pain as well.”

How can music serve as a “bridge” to people with dementia, as music therapy pioneer Concetta Tomaino writes in the book?

“Music and memory are so completely linked. We remember events in our lives: If we hear just a snippet of a song, we're back at our wedding. We're back at any number of events.

“With people with Alzheimer's disease, it is the last memory to stay because this memory area, as it pertains to music, is the last area of the brain that's impacted by the disease. So [Tomaino has] been trying to kind of prolong the sustainability of memory attached to music memories.

“Somebody came up to me after the Kennedy Center Honors and said, ‘I just want to say I heard one of your presentations and my dad was really becoming difficult and becoming a little bit violent. And we remembered suddenly because of what you said, that he was an opera lover and we put on opera. And he calmed down and he smiled, and we've been playing it ever since. It's made a huge difference in his mood and state.’ And so it can alleviate life for caregivers as well.”

Have these insights changed the way you sing?

“It doesn't change the way I sing, but for instance, I now tell the audience that our brain waves are aligning as we are in this space together, having a shared musical experience. That's why they've now shown that singing in a choir is more impactful than singing alone.

“How this work has changed me is that I am living my life now, being mindful of the fact that I need these artistic experiences, things that I thought were extra. ‘If I have time, I'll go to a concert.’ I now prioritize them in my life and I see a huge difference in my state of mind, less anxiety. I’m much happier, so I'm like a living example of how this works.”

Book excerpt: 'The Parting Glass' from 'Music and Mind'

By Richard Powers, edited by Renée Fleming

It’s morning, and dozens of thrushes, wrens, and warblers are singing their hearts out in the trees beneath the window of my house in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Spring in Appalachia, and you know how that piece goes. Some of the singers live here year‑round. Others are passing through on long journeys. I listen as the dawn chorus reaches its wild peak. No one is conducting. The music exhilarates me, and clearly the singers are thrilling one another. If you ask a scientist why birds sing, the answer will deal in courtship and territory. But if you asked the bird, and if you could understand its reply, it would probably be something like, “Because I have to, and it feels so good.”

I put on some music of my own, adding a descant to the morning mayhem. Here’s a miracle that I hope I’ll never get used to: I can stream just about any song ever recorded, any time I want, in every season, from any room in my house in the woods. I call up a fine old Scottish‑Irish song that always goes right through me: “The Parting Glass.” The song is at least four hundred years old, and no one is sure who wrote the music or the words. Traditional, as they say. And I have dozens of covers to choose from. I play one by three Canadian women singing a cappella, in crystalline harmony, as if they’re already a step or two beyond the grave.

The song partakes of an old Celtic tradition. When a guest rose to leave the party and climbed up in the stirrups of his horse, he’d be given a stirrup cup or parting glass, one more drink to fortify him for the night’s trip back home. The song is in the voice of a guest taking such a leave:

So fill to me the parting glass And drink a health whate’er befall, And gently rise and softly call Good night and joy be to you all.

Words fill my house and spill out into the woods. It’s just a folk song— plaintive, playful, a little melancholy. The tune traces out the basic moves of tonal expectation, traveling from home and back again with open grace. The harmonies are steadfast and simple, with no great surprises. The lyrics, however, are a little cheeky, a nice mix of sass, stoicism, and self‑effacement, even though it’s easy to hear that this singer is setting out on a journey somewhat longer than a night’s ride:

Of all the money that e’er I spent, I spent it in good company. And all the harm that e’er I’ve done, Alas it was to none but me. And all I’ve done for want of wit To mem’ry now I can’t recall. So fill to me the parting glass: Good night and joy be with you all!

A summing up, then, with the singers taking stock before a last depar‑ ture. The words could be about nothing at all—they might be in a foreign language, and I would still hear the farewell. It’s there in the suspended harmonies, in the way the chords waver between major and minor. I’m off now, out of here: drink to me, drink to my disappearance. The Celts have always been good at emigration and goodbyes.

For reasons that science may never quite put its finger on, I get chills and my eyes start to water. It happens to me with music, far more than with any other art. Music has a startling ability to make a listener sad over noth‑ ing, simply by unfolding chords in a certain order and weaving them through with a tuneful filigree. It’s not clear what the adaptive advantage of this might be, but the right pitches in the right rhythm can overwhelm us with sorrow. And we love every minute of that harmonious grief.

I’m reassured by a quick online search that reveals at least twenty health benefits of crying. The sheer abundance of weeping’s benefits makes me laugh and laughing brings at least ten benefits more. I don’t know why I chose this song—an evening’s last farewell—to add to the birds’ exuberant morning chorus. I don’t understand why I would willingly choose sadness. But it feels so good. It’s a bracing dive into a cold spring, a glimpse of mid‑ night just before breakfast.

Countless clinical studies have now tied the secret of health to moving. There is also great health in being moved, something that produces similar physiology. Think about the old meanings buried in the etymology of “emotion.” To move and to feel are complements, and the emotion that a tune triggers is a tune‑up in how to move more deeply through the wider world. Music makes us go somewhere. It propels us into new states, new vantages, new emotional affordances. If you ask a scientist why music is healthy, the answer will come in units of cortisol and heart rate and blood‑ oxygen levels. But if you ask this listener, I’d say that music is an off‑line cognitive therapy. By making us sad in the absence of real tragedy, it leaves us more adept in sadness when life calls for the real thing.

Being moved by a song holds the key to mental health. Music says: “Here’s what happens to us. We and those around us move like chords unfolding in time, throwing off fantastic sparks and harmonies. And then the chords end. Here’s how to feel sad about that. And how to hear how that sadness, too, will pass.”

I suspect that none of the dozen species of birds singing outside my window know that one day their song will stop. But every human does. We carry the knowledge of our own death with us all life long. Awareness of mortality is the first and hardest challenge to our sanity. In my life, the best consolation for my approaching death has always been to sing it and to hear it being sung. I think that’s why the world’s great sacred ways of coping with death are so often built around music. So many times in this life I’ve heard friends say, “I love this piece. Play this at my funeral.” Music can train us in goodbyes. In giving us a little taste of our own finitude, it lets us, for a moment, feel the infinite.

“The Parting Glass” lasts only two and a half minutes. Soon enough, it reaches its final stanza. But in those one hundred and fifty seconds, the song lights up my brain in several ways. First, there is the sheer glory of the sound: three clear voices tuned tightly to each other. Then there is the stepwise tune and its dramatic pauses, its phrases always taking their leave, always coming home. Those simple syncopations lay out the plainest two‑step dance, reminding me of all the dancing I won’t be doing when I no longer have a body. A good song—a great movement—is a way of saying, Dance now, if only in your mind, for there is no dancing where you’re going. Finally, there is music’s uniquely vertical trick, stacking up companion lines in step with the one that my ear keys to. The tune contains its own accompani‑ ment, and all the regions of my brain fire in harmony. It reminds me of what good company I’ve spent my life in.

Of all the comrades that e’er I’ve had Are sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts that e’er I’ve had They’ d wish me one more day to stay. But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not, I’ ll gently rise and softly call Good night and joy be with you all!

Of all music’s health benefits, teaching us how to be okay with our own disappearance may be the deepest. A good song lets me hear how the chords go on, far beyond the double bar. As another good song puts it:

Music, music for a while Will all our cares beguile.

That it can do so with sadness is a pure delight.

“The Parting Glass” does what all good songs do: it ends. It gets up in the stirrups, takes a last deep drink, and is off. My Canadian singers spring a surprise minor final cadence, and the tune is done. The morning chorus starts to disperse. I land back on Earth, turn from the window, and get on with my full day’s work. For what it’s worth, I get a ton done.

As I fall asleep, the night is all melancholy owls and mournful whip‑ poor‑wills. Birdsong, too, knows the uses of sadness. At two a.m., when I briefly wake, there is nothing but dead silence. I’m fine with that. The song is ended, but the melody lingers on. Even in the long rests, I can hear how the morning chorus will begin again in the dark, just before sunrise, for whoever may or may not be there to listen.
