How I Became a Full-Time Singer/Songwriter

My plan in life was never to be a musician. It was a dream I always carried around hidden under the surface. Growing up any career aspirations in the arts were discouraged. Instead, you were encouraged to go into industries like medicine or law or business. Ironically, I studied neither one of those professions in college. Instead, I studied Public Relations and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts. I’m still not sure what that means, but given my career goals, I was told Public Relations was where I needed to focus my collegiate efforts and PR was under the Liberal Arts umbrella. I had this idea that someday I’d be a Communications Director of some hospital. I thought I’d get to write speeches for hospital executives, interface with the media, plan galas, and help design masterful brochures and marketing pieces to shape the hospital’s reputation in the local community.  I never got to do those things for a hospital, but as a full-time singer/songwriter, I’m pretty much doing everything on that list, but with a lot more heart and soul.

I’m an acoustic soul singer/songwriter. I do music full-time along with my husband who performs with me on percussion. Our music is about following your dreams and overcoming challenges in life to be at peace and enjoy the beauty it has to offer. My first album entitled ‘Keep The Faith’ is about having faith in who and what you were created to be and not giving up when confronted with struggle. After going to college for four years, earning a degree, and getting what some people call a ‘real job,’ I was laid off during an economic depression, and the stability I thought I had was pulled right out from under me. I went through a catharsis where I started to put more stock in my suppressed dreams of a career in music. I figured since I did the things I was “supposed to do,” and still failed, why not just do what I really want to do? It can’t be any worse.

So I took out my guitar and started strumming. I didn’t get too far with that because my guitar was being a torture device instead of an instrument. So, I enrolled in music lessons which gave me the skill to work my way around a guitar and the confidence to write my own music. All that repressed creativity started to bubble up and before I knew it, I had enough material to record an album. So I began working on that.

By now you’re probably asking what I did for money since I told you I’d gotten laid off. At this time, I’d like to re-introduce the rich uncle concept, but in a different way. The truth is, we all have a rich uncle. We just have to know where to look for him. A rich uncle is simply an unfair advantage. Whether it’s an actual uncle with cash to burn, or a network of highly connected individuals, or an angelic singing voice, everybody can find their secret advantage if they look hard enough. As for me, I did not have a rich uncle but I did have a side job as an event planner that paid me in free rent which allowed me to accumulate sizable savings while still working. So after losing my job, I was able to stay afloat using my savings. I spent that time focusing on earning an income with music.  

During that time, I also built my mailing list, created a website , released an album, and started doing shows.  I also experienced a few life events like getting married, moving, and buying a house. Obviously, our finances changed during that time as well. But this time, Rob worked a corporate job while I continued to work the music angle. 

Even though music hadn’t started paying any bills yet, I considered my work a full-time job. I had a home office. I worked a full day. I got up early in the mornings and worked, took a lunch break, and worked until evening every day. My days consisted of booking shows, marketing and promotions, social media, networking, recording music, making videos, and practicing. Ironically, I was more busy doing music stuff than I ever was working a corporate job. Most of my time was spent on getting paid gigs which wasn’t easy being a newbie. I did a handful of free shows during that time to gain the experience. I had to get a bunch of equipment as well in order to put on a decent live show. In addition, my city didn’t have a lot of opportunities for singer-songwriters. As a result, I started an artists in the round series in order to create paid opportunities and exposure for myself as well as others like me in my community. I also started working with a booking agent which got us even more paid shows. Eventually, paid gigs became more frequent and we started to actually earn a monthly income.

Meanwhile, we decided that Rob would quit his corporate job and we’d do music full-time together.  Now we do a lot more traveling throughout the country doing shows at colleges and universities, bars, churches, lounges, cafes, coffee shops, and more. We sold our house and built a tiny house which has been a big help with keeping overhead costs down. It also allows us to be a bit more mobile and flexible in where we live! After a while, we ventured off into other business ideas relating to music such as music booking, blogging, and other services for artists in addition to doing music. I’m still writing music and I’m currently working on an album called ‘ Work in Progress .’ 

If I had to pinpoint how I became a full-time Singer/Songwriter I’d say three things:

• A financial plan and strategy
• A good team
• Marketing and Promotions knowledge

These are the three things that were instrumental in making music an actual career for me. 

A Financial Plan and Strategy

You need a financial plan to get you through those times of doing unpaid gigs for the first year or so. Whether you’ll be living with a relative, or using money you saved up, or working a job to pay for necessary expenses, you’ll need to have something in place to take care of you financially while you’re pursuing music in the beginning. My strategy was to utilize my savings to cover living expenses and after getting married, my husband’s job supported us during those first few years.

You will also need a financial strategy to help you identify where to focus your efforts in order to make actual money. If you don’t have a financial strategy, you’ll be spinning your wheels and going nowhere. Looking back on my journey, I’ve realized that I spent a good bit of time doing meaningless tasks that weren’t connected to actual financial goals. In hindsight, I recommend figuring out how you will monetize your music ahead of time. That way, your time will be spent on targeted activities rather than random ones. A Good Team

You also need people on your side helping you reach your career goals. In my case, I hired a booking agent. Also, when Rob quit his job, he started doing a lot of the behind the scenes work alongside me such as booking, social media, calendar upkeep, and graphic design tasks. That’s what our set-up looked like, but for others, it may be different. A team can also consist of a manager, a street team, a virtual assistant , an enthusiastic cousin, etc.  

Marketing and Promotions Knowledge

And finally, you need some knowledge in marketing and promoting yourself. You might be the best musician on the planet, but if nobody knows who you are, you might as well be invisible. Having a degree in Public Relations and having work experience in marketing provided a skillset in my music career pursuits that not many musicians have. I created marketing campaigns, wrote press releases, wrote engaging marketing copy for my website, implemented calls-to-action everywhere, and wrote tons of inquiries to get featured on blogs. These tactics opened many doors for me.

I also put a considerable amount of focus and energy into building my mailing list. I’d collect emails at shows religiously. I received a ton of emails just by doing audience giveaways where each person had to fill out a postcard similar to this one in order to join the giveaway. I’d promote my mailing list on my social media, and I would add people to my mailing list in-person. In addition, I have a very informal tone and write to my audience about meaningful things. If I didn’t have these three pillars in place, I don’t think I would have ever gotten this far. 

Most of all, I learned to take care of myself. In this job, you need to be flexible with yourself and give yourself permission to fail and get rejected. Sometimes plans don’t always work at first. You have to be willing to try new things or at least modify your methods in order to accomplish your goals . Throughout the entire process, I always had my goals at the forefront of my mind. I even printed them out and would read them every week. This helped me to remain focused. 

I’ll be honest, it was tough! There were times I questioned whether I had made the right decision. For that first year or so, many times I felt depressed because I was working so hard and wasn’t making a profit to show for it. It’s during these times that you remind yourself of your purpose and mission as an artist. That way you know that whatever happens, whatever someone else says or does, you and your music is enough. Regardless! 

If music is truly at the heart of your purpose and vice versa, whatever you put into it, it will give back to you. A Career as a Professional Singer Essay Sample

“A strange art - music - the most poetic and precise of all the arts, vague as a dream, and precise as algebra.” said Guy de Maupassant, a famous French author.  I have never been all that interested in having a job that requires me to wake up and do the same mundane routine every morning that would then lead me to doing the same activities and projects all the time. I would much rather be doing something fun that I truly enjoy. As of right now, that looks to be something in the field of music, specifically being a professional singer. Therefore, throughout this paper, I will be discussing the career of music performance and be specifically looking into the field of being a professional singer. 

There are several common misconceptions for choosing a career in the field of music including: the need to be talented, professional lessons are necessary and that they must be started at a young age to ensure success. Though these are definitely helpful in this career they are not necessary, and success can still be achieved without either of them. A more correct idea of what this field looks like depends on whether a person wants to be an independent artist. There are really no prerequisites or specific experience or educational requirements required for people who want to be an independent artist. 

While different music companies may have slightly different expectations and rules, there is a typical baseline for the working conditions and qualifications of professional singers. These can change depending on how popular the singer is. For example, a singer who is more well known and popular may be required to put more time into their practicing and work longer hours for longer periods of time, or at least for as long as they remain popular. A professional musician working forty hours a week typically earns around thirty-five dollars and eighty-six cents per hour which then adds up to $68,851.2 per year (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2018). While there are no postsecondary education requirements for singers that are interested in popular music, it is not uncommon for professional musicians and singers, especially in classical music, to have a bachelor’s degree (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2021).  

Important qualities needed to be successful in this career path include dedication, interpersonal skills, discipline, musical talent, physical stamina, and promotional skills (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2021). Dedication is of the most essential from this list because without it a musical performer's chances of success are extremely low. A person needs to be unafraid of rejection and not take it to heart when they are told “no” over and over again. They need to be willing to try again and again and again until they are given the opportunity they have been looking for. Interpersonal skills and promotional skills are important because the performers need to have the ability to work well with a variety of people that are frequently changing whether it be to perform with them or to get a contract or deal with them. These skills are especially important for both professionals that work as independent artists and those that work for private companies or entities. 

Everything so far has been from the perspective of a company, but what about from the perspective of an actual employee of one of these music companies? An interview with Miranda Mulhlland, an award winning Canadian musician, record label owner, and festival founder, shows just how difficult the life of a professional musician can be even in the event that they are successful. She talks about the challenges that professional musicians are having to deal with. Among them are financial struggles, time management, and what is known as the “value gap” (Jewell, 2019). In terms of financial struggles, many lesser known artists struggle to end up with fair deals and returns when it comes to online platforms sharing and allowing for consumers to hear the artists creations (Jewell, 2019). On top of this, the time that they spend marketing, engaging and connecting with people, reporting, recording, and posting all take up significant chunks of time from the day leaving less time for musicians to be creative and actually create music(Jewell, 2019). This can end up hurting them and their careers. Finally, the “value gap” plays a big role in the current realm of musicians, with the large difference that can be seen between the revenue generated by music-generating platforms versus the revenue generated by the people who created and invested in the creation of the work (Lawrence, 2019).

This makes it clear that if a person were lucky enough to become extremely popular quickly, then they can make a lot more money and not necessarily deal with a lot of these common problems since they will have people looking for and asking for them to perform rather than having to look for people and try to convince them to allow them to perform. 

Before, it was briefly mentioned that physical stamina is a good quality to have in this field due to ever changing schedules. It is even more important when a singer or performer is going on a tour because of the fact that they need to be able to keep on top of their training and learn to quickly adapt to changes in time zones. This is one of the most exciting aspects of being a professional singer in my eyes, as travelling has always been a goal of mine. I want to be able to travel as much as I can and I think that this would be a great way to do that.

Much of what touring looks like for an artist depends on whether or not they are being sponsored by or work for a record company or if they are independent. If they are going on behalf of or with a company, then the company acts as a sponsor for them and will usually pay for accommodations and activities that they are required to participate in. On top of this, the artist is often given or made aware of an important schedule that they are expected to follow to the best of their ability. On the other hand, if an independent artist is touring they would be responsible for finding a way to get the funding they need for the trip whether they do it with their own money or make a deal with a company or brand. They would then be in charge of all of the planning and scheduling as well as making sure that they keep on top of said schedule. Another big difference between the two would be that if the singer is signed with a company, especially a more popular one, they do not have to worry about getting people to come and see their show by themselves because the company will likely advertise the performance for them. On the other hand, independent artists have to spread the word of their performances on their own, which largely happens through social media. 

Even after learning all of this information, I would still love to go into this field and I believe that I have many of the qualities that I would need in order to be successful. Some that I likely still need to increase my likelihood of success even more would be promotional skills, willingness to put myself out there, and my ability to recover quickly from being rejected and be ready to try again. I feel I now have a more solid understanding of the field as well as a good idea of how I should go about starting to learn certain skills I need and fine tuning my existing skills.

How to Prepare For Launching Your Singing Career

Success does not come overnight. It usually involves sacrifices, long hours of practice, and long hours of building your confidence. Here are some tips and steps to help you succeed in your music industry:

Step 1) Develop the Right Mindset

Few people have the good fortune to make a living using their talents. Similar to other professions, not all talented singers are given the opportunity to become successful performers. Therefore, you should first clear your head and keep in mind that success can’t be achieved quickly. So, to succeed, you must work hard and put in the hours to sharpen your skills and voice.

The Beatles, for instance, had to perform as a cover band in Germany before they gained international recognition. They didn’t get their break until they returned to England and began performing regularly at a club there.

If you want to make it as a singer, you’d better be serious about practicing and taking singing lessons. Therefore, you must have an iron will to win despite the many obstacles you may face. To put it simply, you need to be relentless. You must have a thick skin and make the most out of every chance that comes your way.

Even I attempted to pursue a profession in the music industry. I wrote hundreds of original songs with my band. The lead guitarist wanted success as much as I did, and the two of us were absolutely committed to making it. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the right bassist and drummer, but we did accomplish our main goal, which was the release of our album by a big record label.

Step 2) Develop Strong Singing Skill

You can forget about being famous if you lack strong vocal skills. To get started, you need to learn how to sing professionally and ace auditions .

The best way to improve your singing skills is to put them into practice. It’s a cliché that “practice makes perfect,” but it’s true. And singing isn’t exempt from this rule.

You need to put in the time to perfect your technique, which necessitates things like performing vocal warmups, having the motivation to get things done, and a strong need for individuality. To launch your singing career, you need to hone your singing skills and boost your confidence so you can perform comfortably and confidently on stage.

To stand out in the industry, singers need to have powerful voices and strong personalities.

How to develop your singing skills

There are a couple of things you can do to improve your singing, considerably. Here are some important recommendations.

• Learn to listen

Many vocalists struggle with active listening. They can’t tell, for instance, whether their singing is out of tune. Listen to your favorite songs and try to identify the flaws in your singing by comparing them to those of your favorite artists.

• Gradually Expand Your Voice Range

If you wish to reach notes you currently can’t, you’ll need to take things slowly. There is room to grow in everyone’s voice. Try to perform exercises that require you to hit a semitone higher than you normally do in each set. You can add another semitone after you’ve reached your goal.

• Learn To Breathe Properly

How you breathe is a crucial part of singing. Singing from the diaphragm requires practice if you’re not used to doing so. To sing and hold long notes well, you must also learn to control your breath.

• Relax Your Muscles

The ability to remain calm under pressure is a skill that must be honed. When singing challenging material, it’s common for people to tense up in the neck region, which should be avoided at all costs. This requires time and effort to master.

• Get Help From a Pro

Whether you were born with a golden voice or you’ve never been able to hit a note in your life, singing lessons from a skilled teacher are priceless. Taking singing classes and studying music theory are great ways to hone your skills and, more significantly, get a fresh viewpoint on your weak points.

Step 3) Learn How to Read Music

First and foremost, you should get good at reading music notation. Next, put your newly acquired musical expertise to use by working on your own compositions. No matter how talented a singer-songwriter is, a young musician will never be able to advance in the music industry without first learning to read music. To develop their vocal abilities, they often take on vocal classes, during which they perform a selection of great songs to improve a singer’s voice .

Second, you should rehearse songs that you haven’t heard before. That way, your singing will have more of a personal touch and you won’t just parrot what you’ve already heard.

Practicing songs that you haven’t heard. That way, you will be able to add your own distinct flavor to your singing .  You need to avoid copying what you’ve already heard exactly.

You could also opt to engage in songwriting to learn how to compose your own tunes.

Step 4) Choose a Suitable Genre of Music/Songs To Start With

Selecting the right songs to showcase your skills is crucial. Most singers often perform a song cover of another artist. Singing someone else’s song is OK, as long as it’s right for you.

While picking the right music can seem straightforward, it isn’t always a walk in the park. Know your vocal abilities, range, and technique. Your vocal range determines the songs you should pick . Unless your vocal range matches that of Al Green, you should not feel bad about yourself. Every performer is unique and contributes something special to the table. Just be confident in your abilities.

Naturally, everyone wishes they could sing their preferred genres. However, just because something is your favorite thing to listen to doesn’t imply you’ll be good at it.

Take a look at these different musical genres and what they stand for in terms of vocalists:

Pop is a broad genre that encompasses a wide variety of musical styles, which can be challenging for performers. Some of the best vocalists of all time were classified as pop artists, but that has everything to do with talent. Singers like Adele and Taylor Swift are good examples.

Similar to pop, rock is a diverse genre that includes a wide range of musical styles. Distorted guitars are a trademark of rock music, as is a robust vocal presence among the band’s frontmen. The finest rock singers, though, didn’t always have rough vocals. Musicians like Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury are prime examples.

Mastering this music genre is extremely difficult and requires extensive practice as it calls for more volume than any other musical style. Luciano Pavarotti, one of the most well-known vocalists ever, specialized in opera.

Swing, Dixie, and Bebop are all examples of traditional jazz forms that use a wide range of brass instruments and vocalists with extensive improvisational abilities.

Although vocal strength is not as essential in hip-hop and its related genres, a great deal of technique is still required. Rapping was coined specifically to distinguish this style of singing from others. It helps to have a good sense of rhythm and a quick tongue.

• Heavy Metal

Some metal singers’ vocals are deep and resonant, while others are forceful and high-pitched. Some subgenres also need mastery of guttural vocal techniques.

The themes of country music include heartbreak, love, and pride. These range from twangy artists like Alan Jackson to more pop-oriented performers like Taylor Swift. If you enjoy a wide variety of vocal styles, country music might be a good fit for you.

Singers with soul and passion are essential to the success of blues bands. This may be seen in the work of numerous musicians, such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Billie Holiday, to name just a few. The ability to “feel” the blues is often cited as a necessary quality in a blues performer.

Step 5) Find A Mentor / Vocal Coach (Optional)

One effective strategy for preparation is to work with a professional vocal coach. Having a mentor is crucial because they can point out your flaws and help you focus on your strengths. The vocal coach you choose is crucial, so make sure you find a vocal coach with a proven track record in the field. If you have any questions about your singing career, a qualified teacher will gladly answer them.

You may also count on the support of those closest to you to offer helpful advice. Your loved ones may not be familiar enough with the music business to provide objective feedback on your performances. Even if that’s the case, though, they’ll still be able to give you feedback from the target audience’s perspective.

As a result, if you want to improve as a singer, hiring a professional instructor is crucial. Of course, this doesn’t imply that social support from loved ones is meaningless. Support from family members and friends can go a long way toward boosting your confidence.

Keep this advice in mind as you work on improving your singing and stage presence, and use these tips to liven up your vocal performance. After all, you should try every possible method to become a better singer.

Step 6) Identify & Strengthen Your Singing “X Factor”

You might be wondering what it is that record labels often look for. Most of the time, they want someone who can attract an audience with their talent and charisma. This is sometimes referred to as the “X Factor,” which is not innate in everyone.

Every renowned singer had a humble beginning. The majority started by singing some of their favorite tunes. Consider the success of bands that perform cover versions of famous songs on shows like American Idol. How to become a singer in Singapore: My personal journey

Will it ever be too late to chase your dreams?

I’m standing in front of a crowd of university students. They stare at me expectantly, waiting for me to start singing. As the lyrics come on, and I start singing, I raise my hands, encouraging them to sing along and sway with the music. It falls flat. They eye me warily. 

I tried again. And again. And again. Each time, the crowd fails to sing along or even seem excited at what I’m singing. 

As I go home later that day, it makes me wonder, “Have I failed? Is it too late? Will I ever make it as a performer?”

My journey since young

Since young, I’ve always been inspired by G.E.M and Eric Chou to become a singer, looking up to them for their voice, the emotions they pour into their songs, their ability to  create music that I resonate with and one which accompanies me throughout various stages of my life

Yet, as I grew up wanting to become a singer and actor, everyone tried talking me out of it (and when I say everyone , I meant everyone ).

Some of the things that were said, as I’m trying to phrase it in a nicer manner, were “Why choose that when the future prospects are so volatile ? It would be a waste to study so hard just to enter the industry! Do you know the amount of people who tried and never saw the light in this industry?”

I understood where they were coming from. I know that the concerns they had, mainly my parents, were because they just wanted me to enter an industry that is relatively more stable and earns better to lead a good material standard of living.

As foolish as it might sound, I thought that I could just grit my teeth and give it a shot but the fear of failing got to me and it consumed the courage and confidence I had, which eventually led to the path I took for the past few years. 

I eventually headed the direction my parents wanted me to, studied hard and ended up doing well for PSLE.

I then went on to study at Hwa Chong Institution before heading to Hwa Chong Junior College. I committed myself to 3 CCAs, became a councilor and studied really hard.

The results did pay off and in my own standards, I built a strong and holistic portfolio and did well for my A-Levels, achieving a AAAAB, better known as a UAP of 88.75.

Being overwhelmed with academic pressure as well as my own expectations of wanting to do well, I rarely had time to pursue my passion and what I was interested in. I did well, but at what cost?    

Why didn’t I start at a young age?

As you may wonder, why didn’t I start pursuing my dreams when I was young?

To tell you truthfully, I still do question my decisions and whether they were right. But I believe that everything happens for a reason, as cliche as it may sound. Whatever I’ve been doing in the past happened for a reason, which was to give me the preparation and time I needed and await for the right time before I’m ready to embark on the journey of pursuing my dreams

Is it too late to do so now?

Having turned 20 this year, I’ve questioned myself, “am I too old now?” 

I’ve questioned myself at times, whether or not it was too late, since there were many others who started way earlier, to join this game. Of course it would be difficult at times to play the catching up game but I feel that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and everyone progresses differently so start only when you feel that you are ready to do so. I’ll be sharing with you why I decided to pursue my dreams despite the concerns I’ve faced 

(i) The fear of failing without trying overrides the fear of failing 

I’ve always been concerned about whether or not I would be able to make it, as much as I know that I was willing to put in all my effort to pursue my dreams, but there were moments of uncertainty which surfaced at times. Then again, I thought to myself, how would I know whether or not I stand a chance if I do not give myself the chance to give it a shot? I guess I did not want to live my life with regrets and lots of what if’s, never knowing the outcome of what my dreams could have been. I know that perhaps another 20 years down the road, I would end up regretting conforming to societal norms of leading a conventional way of getting a stable job and leading a comfortable life instead of leading the life I wanted.

(ii) You determine not just the path, but the pace you take. 

I was overly concerned whether or not it was too late to get started or that the pace I was taking was too slow. But I’ve come to realise that you determine your own progress because you know yourself best, the time you need to prepare, to come up with a plan and at what pace do you function best without adding too much pressure to yourself so go at a pace in which you feel comfortable with because there is no need to compare with others and pile up any form of unnecessary stress.

You are doing it for yourself and the dreams and goals that you have are vastly different from any other individual so take the time that you need

(iii) Live for yourself, never for others. Ask yourself what brings you happiness? Are you content with what you have achieved in life or is there something more you would like to achieve? I got inspired as I came across and read about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, “a theory of motivation which states that five categories of human needs dictate an individual’s behaviour”. 

I realised that there was so much more I would like to achieve beyond meeting my safety and psychological needs, on the scale of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and that I now crave towards reaching the state of self actualisation and the desire to become what I want to be. We only live once.

Live it for yourself, live a life that you want to lead, a life that you would feel happy living, a life where you are free to pursue what you want to achieve and meet your self-fulfilment needs. I truly believe we can only feel genuine happiness, gratification and a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment when we set out to accomplish what we want to do and not to succumb to the expectations of others of how life should be! Remember, your life, your choice. 

So start living for yourself from now! 

What is different between now and then?

To me, back then, it felt like the steps I had to undergo were so much and that it was overwhelming to even start. It wasn’t as easy as taking a microphone and simply just singing. 

To provide a rough idea, I had to source for my own audio equipment, learn musical instruments, music production, write and compose, source for performance opportunities, manage my own schedule etc.

Looking back, 16 years old me definitely would not have known where or how to start, given that it would have been so intimidating for me to start while managing my academics. Besides, having to source for opportunity and financial concerns were limiting factors and that there were many other commitments I had on my plate as well

Yet today, I feel like now that I’ve grown and matured as a person, I can then better plan for my future and the steps I would have to take, as opposed to me recklessly trying, should I have tried a couple of years back.

Striking a balance between dreams and reality

It is true when they say with age, comes wisdom. I’m 20 years old now and it seems like I’m slowly transitioning to adulthood. I’ve been doing some reflection of my own and I feel that I’m now in the right phase of my life to start pursuing what I like to do now that I’ve matured and better know what I want to achieve and how I can do so.

One question that popped out in my mind was “Why can’t I have the best of both worlds?”  It wasn’t until recently where I realised that I can in fact have both, given that having a well-paying job and chasing my dreams isn’t mutually exclusive and that I can do so while pursuing the conventional path of getting a degree and getting a relatively more stable and better paying job. One brings me material wealth and comfort, the other brings me happiness and fulfilment.  

Strike a balance between your dreams and reality. Be realistic of the time you would need and what you would have to do to integrate your dreams with your academics or work. Take things a step at a time and seize every opportunity you’ve been presented with. 

One step at a time? 

The first step is to just get started! The start is always the most overwhelming and brings the most uncertainty. We often avoid starting because we do not want to face whatever that’s impending but you will realise that the momentum kicks in and soon, you’ll be a step closer to your dreams when you get started! Do not think about all the things you still have to do but rather work towards clearing it one by one.

Next, once you get started, work consistently. Discipline is what keeps you going in the long run. Have a plan of what you do upon completing a part of your goals and what comes next because before you know it, everything else will gradually fall in place. Knowing what steps to undergo at every point in time gives you the reassurance that you are aware of what you are doing and what you have left. Having a plan helps to ensure that your dreams will turn into reality, which ultimately depends on you and the decisions you make. 

Lastly, always fight for your dreams to come true. 

You decide how far you want to go to pursue your dreams! Always actively source for opportunities that would help showcase your progress and abilities and put yourself out there. Opportunities do not come easily and they do not come knocking on your door so it is up to you to actively seek for opportunities and secure these platforms for you to display your talent. Talent prevails so believe in your own abilities and that you are meant to be seen by others!

Ultimately, I’m writing this article because I hope that it can serve as a reminder for you to believe in yourself and lead the life that you’ve always wanted to lead. If anything, I hope that you remember to start living for yourself and not leave any regrets behind so embark on your journey to chase your dreams now because it is never too late to start chasing your dreams!

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 7 of “ The Masked Singer ,” “Queen Night,” which aired April 17 on Fox.

“The Masked Singer” dropped a bomb on us: Singer/songwriter Charlie Wilson , who has enjoyed a tremendous career as a solo artist in addition to his time as lead vocalist for the Gap Band, was one of two celebrities revealed on Wednesday night’s edition of “The Masked Singer.” Also unmasked: “The Office” star Kate Flannery (who played the frequently inebriated Meredith).

Wilson was unveiled during the show’s Group A finals as Ugly Sweater, while Flannery was Starfish.

And then, for Starfish, Jeong figured out it was Kate Flannery. Ora picked Amy Schumer, McCarthy-Wahlberg thought it was Lisa Kudrow and Thicke went with Kate McKinnon.

Ugly Sweater was first to be revealed, as Wilson. Then, in a battle royale, Starfish and Goldfish of fishy proportions, the two battled it out to win Group A and move on to the semi-finals. The duo sang their own versions of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” which Goldfish emerging victorious and Starfish emerging as Kate Flannery.

Indeed, it was “Queen Night,” and the contestants opened by singing “We Are the Champions” by the supergroup.

Kate Flannery as Starfish and Charlie Wilson as Ugly Sweater join DeMarcus Ware (Koala), Colton Underwood (Love Bird), Sisqó (Lizard), Billy Bush (Sir Lion), Joe Bastianich (Spaghetti & Meatballs), Savannah Chrisley (Afghan Hound) and Kevin Hart (Book) as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” this season.

Back for Season 11 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, while Rita Ora has joined the desk to fill in for Nicole Scherzinger, who was in London to star on the West End’s “Sunset Boulevard.”

With sixteen total celebrity singers, including three “wildcards,” Season 11 features new costumes including “Gumball,” “Lizard,” “Ugly Sweater,” “Goldfish,” “Starfish,” “Book,” “Gumball,” “Miss Cleocatra,” “Afghan Hound,” “Beets,” “Poodle Moth,” “Clock,” “Spaghetti & Meatballs,” “Lizard,” “Koala” and “Sir Lion.” According to the show, the Season 11 contestants boast a combined 22 Grammy nominations, 11 platinum albums, 33 Teen Choice nominations, 108 million records sold, 326 film appearances and 1.7 billion Spotify streams.

This means Group A winner Goldfish will join Group C’s Poodle Moth and Clock later this season for the quarter finals. (Next up: Group B faces off.)

But then I remembered, there was no one in the world that enjoyed watching me perform more. So, I reached down inside and found the courage to take that stage.
