My Experience in Intramural Sports
Listen to a reading of the My Experience in Intramural Sports blog
The main reason why I wanted to get involved with intramural sports originally was just to play my favorite sport again, hockey. That feeling of getting back on the ice or whatever sport you play whether it is the court or the field, it feeling of being back is the best. Especially in a laid back atmosphere when there is no coach yelling, no added pressure on how well you are doing, just you, friends and vibes. It is so nice to return to that feeling of playing a game you love and having as much fun doing it, and you are not alone. Playing with friends, having them as teammates, and being able to compete with them just makes you closer.
If intramural sports still aren’t for you, Campus Rec also offers many other types of other activities and exercising classes that you can get involved with. Many share the same benefits as intramural sports as well, meeting new people, having it on a schedule, and of course, being active and healthy. If you think that you are all set on all the physical exercises that Campus Rec offers then you can get a couple of friends and sign up for trivia to work a mental sweat.
There are so many options and opportunities for students to get involved, meet new people, and exercise. For someone, like myself, who is not the biggest “gym guy” and stayed in shape through playing sports and being active, intramural sports are a huge part of not only my physical health but also my mental well-being here at URI.

Intramurals is a fun, recreational, social and competitive on-campus sports activity. It is also a great way to meet new people, reconnect with friends, and continue playing the sports you have grown to love and to develop. Intramural activities emphasize group spirit and the enjoyment of sports in a less competitive context. Through sports participation this seeks to promote wellness, to encourage the wise use of leisure time, to improve self-esteem, to stimulate other interests, and to provide students the opportunity to achieve individual and team goals.
While developing a sense of sportsmanship and fair play, they acquire knowledge and skills required for the future. On July 18, 2011 the Tarlac College of Agriculture held the opening ceremonies of their Intramurals at the field. I remember seeing everyone perked up, muses wearing the best sports attire, the s
tudents in class shirts of the different Institutes, people with joy on their faces and others carrying and wearing their props for the modern dance competition. The ceremony began with the parade of athletes.
The adrenaline rushed in as soon as the emcees announced all the teams of the different Institutes. After the parade, another highlight of the ceremony that made everyone rise from their seats is the search for Ms. Intramurals 2011. All the candidates coveted the title and luckily, Miss Riza Aquino of the Institute of Education won Second Runner-Up. Every year, one of the most eagerly anticipated activities during the intramurals is the Modern Dance competition. This activity gives everyone in the college the chance to showcase their talents and prowess in dancing.
There were five teams that vied for the championship title. The competition started with all
the teams fired up to show the judges and the audience what they’ve got. After those powerful and great moves, the judges arrived at their decision. The decisive moment had come. The Educ All-Star of the Institute of Education trained by the dance enthusiast Marlon Espedillon was declared the Champion. In the following days, Sports Competition continued despite the very hot weather and sometimes the heavy rains in the afternoon. All the athletes still strove and hurdled, and a friendly competition ensued.
From all the events Institute of Education, the home of brilliant and disciplined students, proved themselves that in terms of sports they can also compete and race with the other Institutes. The love and determination for sports made them succeed and win in the different sports activities they had joined. As Ms Lorena Bermillo, P. E. Coordinator, announced the winners in the Intramurals, the Institute of Education ranked third place over all. When the Intramurals ended, I realized that it’s not about what you’ve got. But it’s what you make of what you’ve got. Coupled with teamwork, you can achieve anything.

Intramural Reflection
During the first block of Intramurals I participated in 5 different sports, but decided that indoor volleyball would be the best one to reflect upon. This was probably the best team that I was a part of because we took 3rd in the Division 1 league. Nick Bartz was on my team last year, but this year he formed a new team called “Sets Addicts” and was the captain of our team. We had all three of us guys from our last team, but got a new group of girls to help us out. They all had played in high school and still play often now, so we were happy to get them to say the least. When it comes to a component of fitness, I would have to say we hit on muscular strength and endurance the most. Some games would take a long time, so you had to be somewhat conditioned. Otherwise, you need strength to explode to the ball or drive around to try and make a save.
As I said before we got a new set of girls on our team so we all got to meet more people. You can never have too many friends when you’re in college and Intramurals is a great way to meet new ones. You learn many things when you play Intramurals such as how competitive you are, or anyone else for that matter. Students don’t get that T-shirt and 1st place by doing everything on their own, but rather they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and work as a team. When you work as a team you’re also going to have more fun, and that’s what Intramurals are all about. It’s not always fun to play on a team that’s all about winning, I have been lucky because my team has always focused on having a good time and still playing competitively.

I think playing on an intramural team definitely has a positive effect on those who are Physical Education majors. It can help you realize what kind of people you will work with and what to expect. Students often react to constructive criticism in different ways just as many of our friends do with Intramurals. Just being around people who are playing sports and being active should help anyone who is in the field of Physical Education. One other thing to look at in any team is their reaction to a win and then a loss; many times it will tell you all you need to know about most players.
As for me personally I love the whole aspect of Intramurals from the people you meet, the competitive games, and all the drama that goes with it. It’s all a part of the experience and I think most would agree it’s always a good time. I always look forward to having my nights packed with sports to play and always will as long as I’m in college. Everyone gets stressed out through the semester tests, papers, and projects. Intramurals are a good way to get away from school work and just have a great time. You get to be around your friends and other college students who want to enjoy their college experience as best they can. Those are all quality reasons why to come back to Intramurals every block. I plan to play in Intramurals every block they have them, it’s cheap and good clean fun. I’ve gotten a few friends to play with me and since then we’ve gotten many to play and keep planning to. I can’t think of any negative reasons why not to play Intramurals in college because of all the positive outcomes it offers.
