English Language GCSE
The WJEC GCSE English Language specification is designed to help you develop your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. To achieve a C grade or higher in the qualification, you will be required to demonstrate good comprehension skills, as well as the ability to write effectively and accurately.
UNIT 1: Oracy (20%) You will give one individual, researched presentation, based on WJEC set themes. You will also take part in one group discussion on written and/or visual stimuli, provided by the WJEC to initiate the discussion. Please note that we are required to record all oral assessments.
UNIT 2: Reading and Writing: Description, Narration and Exposition (40%) You will sit a two-hour examination paper in June. The paper tests your reading, writing, editing and proof-reading skills.
UNIT 3: Reading and Writing: Argumentation, Persuasion and Instructional (40%) You will sit a second two-hour examination paper in June. The paper tests your reading and writing skills.

Entry requirements.
If you have English as a second language, you will need to have achieved a Level 2 (not Entry Level 2) certificate in ESOL Skills for Life or equivalent. If English is not your first language and you do not have the qualifications to allow you to embark on the GCSE course, please contact our Llwyn y Bryn site on 01792 284021 for an ESOL interview.
Course delivery
You can choose to study face-to-face on a Thursday evening or online on a Wednesday afternoon or a Tuesday evening. Please note that, if you opt to study online, you must have access to a PC, laptop or tablet. It is not possible to follow the course via a smartphone.
You also need a stable internet connection and access to a printer. If you choose the online course, we will need to contact you ahead of the first session, to tell you how to access the class. For this reason, please ensure that you tick the box to say that you allow us to contact you via text and email, and that you leave accurate contact details.
