Imagine you are one of your descendants, far in the future, writing about your present self. Write about an event from your own history from that perspective

Imagine you are a newspaper reporter and write an article about an event in your family history based on your research. Remember to include the who, what, when, where and why if you can!

Imagine your family represented as a literal “tree.” What kind of tree best represents your family’s story? What does it look like and why?

Did you grow up with any family traditions? What is the history behind the tradition? Do you practice any family traditions now?

Choose an event from your family’s history and write an alternative ending to it. Perhaps someone made a different choice or didn’t survive something; how would the course of your family’s history have changed?

Pick two ancestors from your family’s history who didn’t know each other, then imagine a scene where the two meet. What would they talk about, and what would their first impressions be of each other?

Record a memory of one of your ancestors that you want to pass down to future generations —a parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin, etc. Set the scene: How old were each of you at the time? What happened? Why is this a memory you treasure?

Write a brief biography of yourself —everything an ancestor might want to know about you. After all, someday your ancestors will want to know as much about you as you do about yours!

Come up with a pitch for your ancestor’s biography. Is it a sultry tell-all, or a just-the-facts? What major theme(s) does it cover? Be sure to give the bio a title and sub-title, and write the book’s summary as it would appear on the back cover.

Select an ancestor who served in the military, and write a letter to him or her from the perspective of a loved one on the home front. Ask about his or her health, or the conditions in the war. Read real-life wartime letters for inspiration.

Write a paragraph describing three items your ancestor would never leave home without. Why are these objects so important to your ancestor? Where did they come from?

Describe your ancestors’ wedding. Study marriage certificates, wedding banns and photos, and contemporary clothing and rituals to fill in details.

Describe the first meeting between two of your ancestors who would later get married. What are their first impressions of each other? Include any details you know about your ancestor’s appearance, occupation, age at that time, etc.

Pick an ancestor’s hometown and do some research on how it was during your ancestor’s time. Use historical pictures/postcards and city directories to learn about the town, then write a brief tourism ad for the locale highlighting the town’s attractions.

Imagine the first time your ancestor got to vote. Write a letter from them to a relative detailing their impressions. Where was their polling place? What was the process like? What about the other people in line?

I established an eternal bond with my home in Georgia and Cleveland, Ohio, as my mother surpassed continents to help me accomplish my goals. My mother encouraged my legacy to develop strength and resilience in me. She helped me motivate positive thoughts in difficult situations to execute control over a specific condition. A family is the social institution where every individual belongs. Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya an African woman of Lesotho belongs to a large family. As a child she learnt important aspects of life from her family as she grew up. Apparently, the society expects people to adopt its changing environment something Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya has observed throughout her life. (Nthunya, Kendall, Kuzwayo:192).

This article seeks to analyze the African family by assessing the life of Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya as an African woman in the family context. It will cover the structure of the African family, gender roles, education, marriage and the African tradition. It will also look at poverty and ill tradition as a constant feature of the African family.

An African family is made up of the father, mother and children. The father who is the head of the family is in charge of the homestead. The husband is free to marry two or more wives as long as he is capable of feeding all of them. Consequently, many children are born making the families very large.

At times a family consists of the extended family. At times, the nuclear family lives with in-laws, cousins, uncles and aunts. This happens because when a man gets married, the husband lives with his wife or wives in his parents homestead. Furthermore, children are expected to take care of their parents at old age.

Gender roles are based on sex. According to the African traditions, the husband is the bread winner, protector and decision maker. On the other hand the wife’s roles are providing home care, bear children and bring additional income to the family. From childhood each gender is taught their roles. Boys are shown techniques of hunting, cultivating and fighting. Girls are taught to cook, clean, fetch water, collect firewood and to take care of young children.

The African woman is expected to support the man by bring up the children, tilt the land and take care of property. As a result, the African woman engages in activities that bring an income to the family. Due to the nature of large families, the family income is sometimes not enough; therefore she takes the responsibility to feed her children.

Taking a look at Nthunya life, she chose to get employed as a domestic worker in order to support her family. Another reason why women provide for their families is that in some instances, the husband can be brutal to the wife and might also be absent hence the wife assumes full responsibility of her family (Nthunya 63).

The African woman becomes a mentor to her children and takes the responsibility of ensuring that they go to school. For instance Nhunya’s mother encouraged her to go school so that she could learn how to read and write. It is from the family that children would learn how to endure hardships in life. The mothers often persuade children to get education and support them to pursue their dreams of making it in their lives.

The African customs emphasize on the value of the male children in the family. Parents deliberately choose to educate the male child. As a result many women end up uneducated. Therefore Men get well paying jobs with high wages while the African woman gets employment from the least paying jobs. As a result, the woman ends up becoming poor.

The African woman is hard working. By looking at Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya biography, she encounters many life tragedies yet she maintains a positive attitude towards life. She suffered miscarriage, loss of her three children and the death of her husband. Despite going through those misfortunes, Nthunya has a strong spirit to work and move on (Nthunya 107).

She supports her family of eleven with her little earnings for many years. When Nthunya got a chance to get education through the free Catholic-grade school education, she embraced her mother’s advice. She put so much effort to learn different languages: causing her to read and write eight languages

African tradition is a dominant feature in an African family. Nthunya was married traditionally where she was taken by her husband family, which sent a message that she was not abducted but intended to marry. Her husband paid her bride price so that she could marry her according to the customs. Nthunya went on a two months leave so that she could mourn her husband’s death.

Marriage in an African family is respected. The husband is expected to pay bride price after which he own and gains control over the woman he marries. Those who get married are expected to stay together as husband and wife. Divorce and separation are discouraged and therefore marriages last long, perhaps till death. Polygamy is allowed. Those who marry more than one wife are seen as wealthy and therefore command respect. After the death of a spouse one can remarry.

An African family as portrayed in Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya story lives in poverty. (Nthunya 192). She lived a humbled life with little possessions.

The main concern for an African woman is to get food and clothing for her family. For example, Nthunya worked very hard so that she could buy food for her children. Families struggle to get enough food to survive form hunger. At times there is lack of money to go to hospital and therefore families turn to traditional medicine men for intervention. Furthermore an African woman has little or no possessions.

When families do not have enough funds to educate their children, parents rely on donors. When such children get educated their lives change because they can express themselves before other people. Taking into account the Nthunya’s story, her knowledge of different languages enables her to express herself before strangers and communicate. With her little education she is able to give her own story vividly.

Ill traditions are asset back to African families. Traditional medicine men practice traditional healing. When Nthunya experienced a miscarriage she was asked by the traditional medicine man to perform a ritual. The ritual would free her from miscarriage, because her mother failed to arrange for feasting following her birth.

She was required to return to her mother’s home. On arrival she would arrange to get a goat’s gall bladder and bather besides it. The African family has suffered racism. Nthunya in South Africa witnesses brutal beating of the blacks and was also jailed for sometime because of her color.

The African family is without any doubt supported the African woman.

By examining Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya story, it is clear that despite the hardship of life her determination keeps the family strong and going. Ill traditions and poverty being the main problem can be overcome by educating the African woman. Intern the African woman will take care of the family in a better way.

A family is a group of people who are related by blood or heritage. These people are linked not only by blood but also by compassion, love, and support. A person’s character and personality are shaped by his or her family. There are various forms of families in today’s society. It is further subdivided into a tight and extended family (nuclear family, single parent, step-family, grandparent, cousins, etc.)

Family – A synonym for trust, comfort, love, care, happiness and belonging. Family is the relationship that we share from the moment we are born into this world. People that take care of us and help us grow are what we call family, and they become lifelines for us to live. Family members have an important role in deciding an individual’s success or failure in life since they provide a support system and source of encouragement.

It does not matter what kind of family one belongs to. It is all equal as long as there are caring and acceptance. You may be from a joint family, same-sex partner family, nuclear family, it is all the same. The relationships we have with our members make our family strong. We all have unique relations with each family member. In addition to other things, a family is the strongest unit in one’s life.

Things That Strengthens The Family

A family is made strong through a number of factors. The most important one is of course love. You instantly think of unconditional love when you think of family. It is the first source of love you receive in your life It teaches you the meaning of love which you carry on forever in your heart.

Secondly, we see that loyalty strengthens a family. When you have a family, you are devoted to them. You stick by them through the hard times and celebrate in their happy times. A family always supports and backs each other. They stand up for each other in front of a third party trying to harm them proving their loyalty.

Most importantly, the things one learns from their family brings them closer. For instance, we learn how to deal with the world through our family first. They are our first school and this teaching strengthens the bond. It gives us reason to stand by each other as we share the same values.

No matter what the situation arises, your family will never leave you alone. They will always stand alongside you to overcome the hardships in life. If anyone is dealing with any kind of trouble, even a small talk about it to the family will make ones’ mind lighter and will give them a sense of hope, an inner sense of strength to fight those problems.

Importance of Family

One cannot emphasize enough on the importance of family. They play a great role in our lives and make us better human beings. The one lucky enough to have a family often do not realize the value of a family.

            If you were to go to Ithaca, NY and say the name Lucatelli or Ciaschi to a local they could tell you that they know at least one. These names take up a significant portion of my family tree. The source of this branch is all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to the country of Italy. Beginning with my great great grandparents and continuing to present day where now I have aunts, uncles and cousin in Italy, New York and some throughout the U.S.              To my knowledge it begun wit my great great grandparents in Italy back in the late 1800s. Their name was Ciaschi. The couple started their family in a small town called Carpineto. They gave birth to eight children; six boys and two girls. One of the two girls eventually grew up and married a man by the name of Raffaele Lucatelli, leading to the joining of the two families. Many of the other eight children got married and stayed in the same small town in Italy. As years past these children had offspring of their own. My great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raffaele Lucatelli, had two girls and a boy. My great aunts Libia and Pina, and my grandfather Giuliano Lucatelli. My grandfather was schooled in Italy and joined the Italian military. I believe it was in 1950 that he returned to his hometown of Carpineto after a few year of being away. It was then that he met my grandmother Yolanda Carbone. She was born in Ithaca, NY, but was brought up in Italy in a little village outside of Carpineto called Fondi. It was when my grandfather returned that they met and a year later got married. .              After spending about a year in Italy it was the summer of 1952 that my grandfather moved back to America with my grandmother. They settled in her native town Ithaca, NY. After a few years there my grandfather sent for many of his cousin, telling them what a great place New York was. By the early 1960s many of his cousins, the Ciaschi's, had moved to Ithaca. That is when some of them went partners in opening restaurants.

We named our kids after beloved relatives. My mother-in-law said my son's name was overused, but we gave it to him anyway.

• My family is somewhat traditional, and baby names are handed down through the generations.
• I love naming someone for a close relative to pay tribute to them.

I recently met a grandfather, son, and grandson who shared the same name. They were called William Senior, William Junior, and William III.

While I'm not a fan of the Roman numerals, my family does much the same thing with the names we hand down .

It's not for everyone. My husband and I have been criticized for the "boring" manner in which we've named our kids after relatives — many of whom are deceased.

"Couldn't you have been more imaginative?" a friend once remarked.

I told her that we had some incredible role models in our family. And what better way for a child to honor their legacy than to share their name?

My mother-in-law initially disapproved of the name we planned for her grandson

Our 15-year-old daughter, Daisy Grace, is named for her paternal and maternal great-grandmothers . Both were wise, formidable women — but also kind.

Meanwhile, our son, Robert, 13, shares the name of his late, charismatic paternal great-grandfather, late paternal grandfather, and eldest uncle. Robert is also my father's middle name.

When I was pregnant in 2010, my mother-in-law said she disapproved of our naming strategy at that particular time. "Robert is over-used in our family," she said.

We ignored her, thinking it was more important to pay tribute to our relatives. She has since come around to the idea.

She also understands why our son's middle name is Ridley, my maiden name. I didn't change my last name when I got married for professional reasons — and, more importantly, personal ones.

Without my son sharing at least one part of my name, Ridley would have died out with me. My dad is an only child, and my sister took her husband's last name when they got married .

My son is proud of his name because he admires his late granddad

I recently asked the kids if they liked their names . They said they did.

Daisy said she enjoyed learning about her late great-grandmothers. She looks at their photos and remarks on her resemblance to them.

Meanwhile, my son worships the memory of his paternal granddad, despite being a one-year-old when he died. He fought in World War II . Robert, a history buff, thinks he's hero because he survived the Battle of Arnhem while serving in a parachute division.

It would be nice if our children continued our naming tradition when they began to have families of their own. But there's no pressure. I've promised them that my nose won't be put out of joint if they don't.
