1. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of three of the following as media for communicating information. State which you consider to be the most effective.

Sample Answer

In our daily life, we always communicate information through the media, such as  television, radio, film. These media have different advantages and disadvantages for us.  Now, I am going to compare the advantages and disadvantages of books, television  and film.

Books bring us different knowledge. It bases on what Book we read. A famous Chinese  traditional verse which described books is a treasure. We can find a golden house in  there. Moreover, when we want to read it, we can find it easily, such as bookstore,  library. We can also learn a lot of words from books. And it can improve our reading and  writing skills.

However, books always are not attractive for children or youngster. It is because books  are quite boring. A lot of words and less pictures inside the books, compare to  television, television has pictures and sound, we don’t have to read a lot of words in  television. But some artist in television programme or film, bring a bad image to us.  Then some children or youngers will imitate their behaviour. Some film also bring a  wrong message to us, For example, they are always smoking in films. It seems that  smoking is good and smart. It caused many youngers imitate them smoking.

In conclusion, books, television and film have many advantages and disadvantages. I  cannot write all in here. And we have chosen the media carefully.

2.  Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

The invention of television is undoubtedly one of humankind’s greatest inventions. It is a  way of communication among people of one country and different countries and  nations. People watch TV to find out about the latest news, weather, sports, etc. It is a  great way to learn new and extend one’s range of interests. Scientists say that children  spend the same amount of hours in front of TV as they do in school. I think that this can  be said about many grown people too. Also, television is a great means of eliminating  stress and tension. One can relax and leave one’s troubles behind lying on one’s favorite sofa and watching a comedy. However, some people believe that television has  destroyed communication among friends and family.

Personally, I do not agree with this statement. A couple centuries ago people spent their  time gambling, reading, gossiping or playing chess. I do not think that television is a  cause of destroyed communication among family members and friends. First of all, if  members of a family have common interests and they want to make each other happy  they will always find many ways to spend their time together and be close. Otherwise, if  people avoid each other and they do not have anything to share with each other they  will find television a great way to escape from this miserable existence. I believe that  many people chose family and their friends over some soap operas or a movie.

Second of all, I think that television can be a great resource of subjects to discuss.  Many people watch different educational programs to find out more about their  environment, nature, wild life animals, economic situations, etc. So, when they gather  with their friends they discuss important issues and arque with each other in looking for  the truth.

My husband and I often watch the news channel to keep abreast of the latest news.  After that we always discuss some issues we concerned about. Also, we like to watch a  TV show “the funniest animals”. We like this program because it makes us laugh. I can not imagine how these programs can prevent our communication and be harmful to our  relations.

To summarize, I would like to add that if people want to communicate with each other  they will find a way to do it. Otherwise, if television were not existent, people would find  other escapes and reasons not to be with each other such as drugs, gambling, etc.

3. News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?

News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers.  There are two factors that influence their decisions. The first is the kind of customers  they tend on. Because each kind of readers and watchers has its own features. For  example, if your customers are almost teenagers, you have to concentrate on  something attracting them such as stories, photographs about singer stars, film stars,  funny tales, and young fashion. It will be very silly if you try to provide teenagers with  economic, politic news. On the contrary, business men and politicians may never read  news about James Blunt or Keira Knightley. Therefore, what influence news editors’  decisions the most is the taste of their customers.

The second is the hot, the attraction of news. Who will reads or watches your news if it  was one year, one month ago even last week? The answer is nobody absolutely. In the  energetic and competitive world nowadays, people always ask for really new news. So  that to satisfy customers, there is a pressure on all editors to find continually what has  already happened not only yesterday but even an hour ago. Or else, they will lose their  customers. None of editors wants that bad future.

On television or in newspaper, we seem to become used to bad news. It is a little of  difficult for us to meet a piece of good news. We can’t deny that bad things occur on the  earth day by day. However, news editors try to gain more and more customer, which  means more and more money, by bad news. Because bad news makes us curious. We  want to know why it is bad, what it is about, whether it influences us or not. As a result,  we will buy newspapers or watch television to find out. And the happiest people are, of  course, news editors.

I think it would be better if more good news was reported. Bad news makes us worry  and sad. Whereas good news makes us happy. How much bad news is, there should  be the same amount of good news. So, we can give something bad a lot of thought  while still be joyful with good news. Any inequalities between good news and bad news  should be avoided. That is the best solution.

Now, we can’t live without news. Thereby, the role of news editors is very important. We  should support them. And what they have to do is try their best to provide us useful  news, both good and bad.

4. Many people believe that television programs are of no value for children. Do you agree? Why or why not? Provide reasons and examples to support your response.

Televisual media has become a pervasive force in the lives of families around the world  today. Yet, a central question remains regarding whether watching television is harmful  or beneficial for children. An analysis of this question reveals that television programs  present three major concerns in the case of children, including depictions of violence,  the use of profane language, and the representation of poor moral role models.

Television programs that portray violence are a paramount concern for parents  nowadays. Recent research has shown that children may commit acts of violence  because they wish to emulate the behavior that they see on television. This is especially  true when violent acts are committed by well-known action “heroes.” In addition,  television programs show cartoon figures, as well as actors, committing violent acts.  Using comic situations to depict violent themes causes further problems with the way in  which young people view violence.

Television programs that contain profane or disrespectful language also worry parents  with young children. Because censorship laws have relaxed over the past few decades,  it has become very common for television programs of each and every kind to show  characters expressing impolite, rude, and insulting utterances to one another. Bearing  resemblance to the case of portrayals of violence, children unfortunately often try to  imitate these actions they watch on their television screens.

Finally, some parents are upset about the moral behavior depicted on television. As  they struggle to teach their children moral and ethical values, parents might despair  about the lack of morals and ethics represented in some of the so-called role models on  television. For instance, certain characters not only have no remorse for their immoral  actions, but also frequently go unpunished by larger society.

Because of these factors, many parents believe that television programs send their  youth the wrong kinds of messages. The emulation of this poor behavior by their  children is something they wish to avoid at all costs, and they have accordingly decided  to ban television in their households for these reasons.

5.  Television has had a significant influence on the culture of many societies. To what extent would you say that television has positively or negatively affected the cultural development of your society?

It has been around forty years since television was first introduced into Australian  households and people today still have mixed views on whether it has a positive or a  negative influence on the society.

Many people believe that television damages culture. It promotes the stronger cultures  of countries such as Britain and North America and weakens the cultures of less wealthy countries. This is because the stronger, wealthier countries are able to assert  their own culture by producing more programs that are shown widely around the world.  These programs then influence people, particularly young people, in the countries  where they are shown.

Also, because television networks need to attract large audiences to secure their  financial survival, they must produce programs which are interesting to a broad range of  people. In Australia this range is very broad because we are a multicultural society and  people of all ages like to watch television. To interest all these different people, most  television programs are short in length, full of action and excitement, do not require  much intelligence or knowledge to understand, and follow universal themes common to  all cultures, such as love and crime. Television programs which concentrate on or  develop themes pertinent to one particular culture are not so successful because they  interest a smaller audience.

Nevertheless we much acknowledge that television does have some positive effects on  the cultures within a society as well. People who do not live within their own culture can,  in a limited way, access it through the multicultural station on the television. For  example, Aboriginal children who have grown up in white families, or migrants and  international students living in Australia, can watch programs from their own culture on  the television.

In conclusion, I hold the view that television promotes and strengthens those cultures  that are wealthy and influential while it weakens the cultures that are already in a  weakened position.

6.  The mass media, including television, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people’s ideas. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The mass media have a powerful influence in shaping our lives. We have come to  depend on them for information and entertainment, and in doing so we let them affect  important aspects of our lives.

The undeniable usefulness of the media in almost instantly providing information about  events around the world is largely taken for granted. But in our dependence on the  media we have allowed them to mould our notions and opinions of events, places and  people. Though few of us probably think about it, our conceptions of, say, our elected  officials spring from television images and newspaper stories. Most of us will never  meet prime ministers or presidents, but anyone who is regularly exposed to the media  will have an opinion of them. When it is time to cast our vote, we will make our decision  based on how the media portray the candidates. We are similarly swayed by coverage  of wars. The media, representing the values of their owners, societies and  governments, tend to report wars with a bias; which is the ‘good’ side and which the  ‘bad’ is determined for us by reporters, editors and commentators, and sure enough the  public begins to form opinions that reflect the coverage they see, hear and read in the major media.

The media are also influential in the way they facilitate the spread of culture and  lifestyle. The so-called ‘global youth culture’, in which one finds young people around  the world displaying a common interest in music, clothing styles and films, is an  example of the media’s enormous sway in this regard. A popular figure such as Michael  Jackson would never be so well known were it not for the media’s extensive reach into  every society on the globe.

Thus I would argue that the mass media’s influence is certainly great. Indeed, with  technological advancements such as the Internet bringing even more forms of electronic  media to our homes and workplaces, it is likely the media’s influence will grow even  stronger.

Some people think that there is a great influence of news media on people’s lives and this is a negative development. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give your opinion and relevant examples.

Some people think that the news media nowadays have influenced people’s lives in negative ways. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 8.5 Model Essay 1:

For many people, the news is a regular part of life. An issue in dispute is whether the massive influence of the news media on people’s daily lives denotes a negative development. It is my view that news media does more good than harm to society.

The news media provides people with much of the information they need on a timely basis, although there are claims that it reports on issues and events purposely (only selecting those events that interest the audience). Anecdotal evidence shows that people from all walks of life have the habit of collecting information regularly from the news media, including print, broadcast, and Internet-based media. The information assists people in decision making. For example, the Free Trade Agreement reached by the Chinese government and its New Zealand counterpart might open up many opportunities for both countries. For any business person, either in New Zealand or in China, failing to recognise and capitalise on this impending  change would cause a costly loss.

Meanwhile, it should be recognised that the news media can sometimes save lives and reduce casualties . There is a lot of uncertainty about the surroundings , and people are susceptible to the damage caused by accidents, crimes, and natural calamity . The news media conveys the firsthand information to concerned audiences and enable them to take corresponding actions right away. The authority can declare a state of emergency when it is necessary, organise evacuation and distribute aid to the needy areas. All these efforts count on the news media as the messenger .

Despite their significant and ongoing contribution to the society, the news media might sometimes be harmful to society. It is a convention that the news media exaggerates the magnitude of the real threat (for example, the potential of a terrorism attack), in order to draw the attention of the desired audiences and in pursuit of high audience ratings. It ends up with causing panic among the population. Meanwhile, the news media tends to emphasise some issues or events, which virtually have little relevance to people’s daily lives, such as an occasional multiple vehicle accident, an affair that a celebrity is involved with, and the like. It distracts the audience from something that is much more noteworthy, for instance, poverty, environmental problems, to name but a few.

In summary, the role of news media as an information provider should be acknowledged. In case of emergency, it acts as a lifesaver. However, it is not to say that the news media can give people an overall view of the problems in society all the time.

Band 8.0 Model Essay 2:

The influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes. The speed at which news travels around the world has become faster with the advancement in technology. A lot of people believe this influence to have more drawbacks than the merits. This essay shall discuss both views and offer a reasonable conclusion.

Gaining information on current events has become quicker and easier as people have a host of resources on which they can depend on for news about the world, like TV news channels, radio broadcasts, newspapers, internet, smartphone applications and so on. Sharing and exchanging of views on the same has also become quite popular. Apart from panel discussions on news channels, public forums on the internet also let us know the various reactions people have to a certain piece of news – like the comments on Facebook under any news article – that shape our opinions. However the pressing question is whether these determinants are for the better or worse.

Too much dependence on anything is never good, which exactly sums the scenario of people’s growing dependence on news media. For instance, many news channels nowadays keep on looping the same (maybe insignificant) news piece all day long, hammering it in the minds of unsuspecting people. The many small media houses that are cropping up are deemed to be corporate sell-outs that publish news relating to the interests of the party that funds it, and cater to the masses by putting out the most sensational news stories.

The freedom of sharing opinions about any issue also can be feared to seed stereotypical judgements into people’s thinking. This is bad especially for developing and under-developed nations, where a majority of the people are not rational enough to be exposed to the press. For example, news about a plane crash focusing on the casualties and the dangers of the crash, instead of the relevant things like structural stability, changes the attitudes of such kind of people towards that risk regardless of its real probability.

Weighing all the arguments presented above, I can conclude that the growing influence of news media is definitely a bad development on people’s lives. Unless the news informants take a firm hold of their responsibilities towards journalism, over-reliance on such news sources can be detrimental.

Task 2 Samples

Some people think that parents should teach their children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the best place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that children should be taught by their parents about how to function as useful members of society, while others believe that sending children to educational institutions is the best way for them to study this. Although the latter opinion can be beneficial in some cases, I believe that family upbringing plays a more important role in educating children to be good parts of the community.

Schools can be considered suitable places for children to learn to be good citizens. With standardized educational methods, schools can foster children’s cognitive development so that they are able to contribute to society in the future. For example, Trung Vuong school and Vinschool are well known for having nurtured successful alumni such as Professor Ngo Bao, Professor Nguyen Hung who have devoted their talents to the development of the country. However, these people only represent a small fraction of the total number of students attending schools, and thus sending children to schools cannot be the best method of educating them to be good members of society. 

I believe that parents play a more important role in teaching them how to be good citizens. In Vietnam, the average class size is 20 students, which makes it difficult for educators to provide proper schooling for each student. One to one lessons at home, on the other hand, allow children to progress faster. Furthermore, parents form stronger bonds with their offspring and thus, it is easier for them to shape children’s personalities at an early age. Since the majority of the worldwide population have a diet that includes animal products, these type of food is the one that is normally available at food businesses. Therefore, people with a vegetarian diet have to choose between a limited number of plates or products when buying food or eating out. For example, in many popular restaurants in Colombia, the menu has only a short vegetarian section which includes only two or three plates that are completely vegetarian. However, I believe that those options that are offered are healthier than plates that are sold in large quantities.

Following a vegetarian diet allows the body to work better. This is because science has shown that when our human system digests animal products, such as meat, it has to work harder to process the food that it is not designed to receive. These days the competition for the same job has increased, as more young people apply for it. The main problems this causes are high competition for one job and an increased unemployment rate. The most viable solutions are creating special programs for young people and expanding the job market by introducing special positions for others. 

Having a high number of people applying for the same job creates high competition for one position, among younger and older people. As a result, for one position apply hundreds of people, and only one, mainly young people, is hired. Additionally, this leads to unemployment, as there are not many positions available to people and not everyone finds a job. In Ukraine, for example, every year many people in their forties or fifties file for unemployment insurance, as they were not able to find a job due to the companies prefer hiring younger candidates rather them. 

One way for governments to overcome this difficulty is to create special positions for the elder and senior people, like to be trainers. In such a way, they will not lose their jobs and will be able to pass their knowledge to the younger generations. Another solution is for organizations to introduce more internships or traineeships. Creating such opportunities will assist people in having at least temporary jobs. For example, every year a well-known Ukrainian mobile company Life hires the younger for one year program with a future potential full-time employment, as they want to retain their current employees and provide future job opportunities for younger generations.

That is because they cannot cope with the financial burden of buying new clothes from stores, such as Prada or Gucci. As a result, many youngsters buy second-hand clothes. For example, in the United States, many teenagers buy used Gucci products in order to wear them and be like their idols. 

I think it is a positive development because teenagers who buy used shirts or pants can save money for other useful things, such as a computer or a car. That is to say that, if these adolescents have a computer, they could use it for the school or even to work in computer related jobs. For example, many teenagers can work as a freelancer in many jobs that do not require high skills to do it, such as making presentations or translating works from other language and as a result earn money and save it.

Therefore, I believe that it is of greater advantage for more people to follow a vegetarian diet.

When employees have to wear the same clothes regularly, they feel bored and sometimes, it has a negative impact on their productivity. This is to say that in those corporations, where uniforms are mandatory, companies have to allocate some money for new and worn-out uniforms. For instance, the spending of the famous footwear company, Bata, is around 5% more than its rival companies because in this company a uniform is mandatory, and the company allocates some money for uniforms.

I therefore believe that this is the best way to maintain and improve health.

This will help people keep away from a negative visualisation and their damaging effects on their mental health to make them feel unsafe. For example, recently in India a show called ‘crime patrol’ was prohibited on news channels because it had a negative psychological impact on people after watching it.

In conclusion, previously committed crimes and detailed news on any serious crimes can lead to people feeling less safe. However, this can simply be prevented by putting extra safety measures in place and compelling news channels to stop showing comprehensive details of dangerous crimes.

Another key drawback is that repeating the same clothing can demotivate workers. Employees can feel tired of always looking the same because they cannot choose what they want to wear. For instance, a recent survey showed that 60.3% of people who wear uniforms do not like to wear them, and they would like to make decisions about their outfit at work.

This is because, manufacturing processes generate CO2 and other fumes, sewage, and industrial waste which are released to environments and cause air, water and soil pollution. Furthermore, industrial pollution will negatively affect people’s health by precipitating respiratory diseases as well as some types of cancer. For example, Beijing, a big city in China, is facing smog which comes from manufacturing and incomplete combustion of logistic vehicles. This leads to an increase in the number of asthma-exacerbated patients.

To conclude, while prioritisng economic development will result in an increase in employment and a better quality of life, the serious downsides that come with this are environmental pollution and residents’ health issues.

Without ecological concerns, the air will be polluted from carbon dioxide and fumes which are emitted from these factories, and rivers will be polluted by industrial sewage from manufacturing and chemical processes. For example, Beijing, China, is facing a hazardous level of the air pollution caused by fuel burning and chemical reactions from industrial areas. As a clean environment is extremely vital for a human life, I therefore think that the main drawback outweighs its key benefit.

To conclude, although people will earn higher income if the government prioritises the economic sector rather than other sectors, the serious drawback as pollution problems far outweighs the advantage.

Speaking About Media [IELTS Vocabulary]

In all parts of the IELTS exam, you will be expected to know how to talk about common life topics like education , health , technology , and so on. Speaking about media is one such area because the media enters almost everyone’s life in some way.

As such, today I am going to show you how to talk about the media by looking at some vocabulary and then offering up a few sample questions.

What is the Media and How Does it Appear in IELTS?

The best definition of “media” that I could find comes from the Cambridge Dictionary :

the internet, newspapers, magazines, television, etc., considered as a group

It is a sign of the times that “internet” comes first in that list because, for a long time, the media was thought of mostly as newspapers, TV, the radio, etc. However, of course we can now include the internet and even social media part of the general media.

Media has some other definitions, but the above one is the part we are going to focus on today as it is most relevant to IELTS. It could appear in any section of the exam and I frequently see it in the writing test, where candidates are commonly asked about the influence of the media or the media’s responsibility on various issues.

Here is a sample essay about the influence of the media. There is another here that is specifically about social media.

IELTS Speaking Questions: The Media

Because topics related to the media typically require a substantial answer, they are most likely to occur in parts 2 and 3 of the IELTS speaking test. It is definitely possible that you could encounter them in part 1, but I think it’s a bit less likely. If you did, it would probably say something like, “Where do you get your news from?” or “Do you often read magazines?” These would require a simple answer of just 1-3 sentences. For example:

I usually get my news from the BBC app but I also check Google News and Twitter so that I get a diverse range of sources. I think it’s a big problem when people get all their news from just one place.

In part 2, you might be asked to describe a magazine or newspaper that you know. It is also possible this could be a website , app , or social media outlet. You would have to speak for 1-2 minutes about this particular topic and so it would be useful to have some good language related to the media. (We’ll come to that in a moment.)

As for part 3, those questions would be a little more challenging. They would be serious issues that require a bit of depth to the answer, probably requiring you to give about 3-5 sentences that explain your position or dig into the issue. For example:

• How do you think people will get their news in the future?
• How has social media changed the way we get and share the news?
• What do you think of children watching TV?

These are not questions you could adequately answer in a single sentence. You would need to give more detail. For example, to the second question, I might say:

I think it’s almost impossible to overstate the way that social media has changed how people get the news. In the past, countries had a few different news outlets, some of which were independent and others controlled by the government, but nowadays people tend to share a wide range of news sources on social media. Whilst this sounds great, actually it has caused a lot of problems because people tend to pick and choose their news sources according to their own biases, creating what some people call an “echo chamber” and amplifying misinformation. Beyond that, some countries have gotten quite adept at manipulating other ones through the spread of misinformation on social media, turning populations against one another and sowing the seeds of distrust for the government. What seems like a shift in the way that people read the news has in fact had a massive impact on billions of lives.

This answer is probably a little longer than you need to speak for, so don’t worry if it seems intimidating. For questions with a lot of scope, though, it is possible to give very developed and nuanced answers like this.

Right, now let’s look at some useful vocabulary for talking about the media. I will try to group these words into useful collections, but of course there is some overlap between them.

Advantage & Disadvantages Type Questions

In these type of questions you are asked to discuss the positive and negative sides of a particular topic. You will usually be asked this in the context of giving an opinion ( e.g. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Is it a positive or negative development? ):

IELTS Opinion Essay On Violent Media (Partially Agreeing) With Sample Answer

About the article

Question: some people believe that violent media directly results in violent behaviour. to what extent do you agree or disagree.

In the last few decades, due to the evolution of media, the popularity of aggressive content on television and online games has increased drastically. While some argue that this trend makes people more violent, others insist that it has no impact on their conduct. In my opinion, despite the constant exposure to terrorising content in the media plays a significant role in encouraging violent behaviour, it is not the only element in promoting violence in humans.

Firstly, many individuals, especially youngsters are attracted towards online games, which include substantial violence and aggression. This creates a lasting impression on their mind and motivates them to imitate the same actions. For instance, a controversial, highly-addictive online game called “PUBG” has played a key role in exposing children to a world of criminality.

Secondly, the portrayal of violent content in movies is unrealistically stylised and glamorous. Several action movies or crime series include gruesome acts of brutality. For example, several crime thrillers have a lot of elements of physical conflict, frauds, sadism and injustice, which in turn influence the public, especially the youngsters, to model these hazardous acts.

However, it is also known that humans are violent in nature by evolution as well. The history of human civilisation shows that violence has been an integral part of our society long before the advent of media. The merciless havoc caused by wars, both national and international, raids by invaders, and heinous atrocities such as the Holocaust by Adolf Hitler during the Second World War are few examples of how violent humans can be, even without the aid or influence of media.

To conclude, it is undoubtedly true that we are influenced by what we see, hear and experience. In my opinion, although the projection of violence in the media in various forms definitely has aggravated the rate of crimes by normalising violence and aggression, it is not the sole source and cause of violent behaviour in our society.

Many social media users also face the ill effects of these platforms through cyberbullying, which leads to mental health issues and even greater cases of suicides in the present generation. Furthermore, various reports also entail that overusing social media can even hamper students' academic performance since they waste their precious time on these applications.

Republicans Call on NPR’s C.E.O. to Testify About Political Bias Accusations

Katherine Maher, the radio network’s new chief executive, has been in the spotlight since an editor published an essay accusing the organization of leftward-leaning bias.

Congressional Republicans on Wednesday said they had asked NPR’s new chief executive, Katherine Maher, to address accusations of political bias in the radio network’s journalism during a hearing next week.

A trio of Republican lawmakers — Representatives Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, Bob Latta of Ohio and Morgan Griffith of Virginia — sent a six-page letter to Ms. Maher that notified her of an investigation into the network and requested her appearance on May 8.

“As a taxpayer funded, public radio organization, NPR should focus on fair and objective news reporting that both considers and reflects the views of the larger U.S. population and not just a niche audience,” the letter said.

The lawmakers, all members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the hearing would be held by the panel’s oversight subcommittee.

NPR declined to comment, but Ms. Maher may have a scheduling conflict. According to an agenda of NPR’s upcoming board of directors meeting, Ms. Maher is scheduled to convene with NPR’s board all day on May 8.

NPR has been scrutinized by conservatives in recent weeks after the publication of an essay by Uri Berliner , a former senior editor at the network, who said that the network had allowed progressive politics to affect its coverage of major stories. Mr. Berliner, who has since resigned, cited the network’s coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic, the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and Hunter Biden’s laptop as examples of bias.

Mr. Berliner’s essay has generated vociferous pushback from many employees at NPR, who say that many of his points were factually inaccurate. Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor for standards, has said the network’s coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop, the Covid-19 pandemic and the investigation into Russian collusion by Robert S. Mueller III, a special counsel, hewed closely to responsible coverage by other mainstream news organizations.

Ms. Maher, who joined the network this year, has personally been targeted by conservative activists who have combed through her social media history and resurfaced posts that promoted progressive causes and critiqued former President Donald J. Trump. In one post, from 2018, Ms. Maher called Mr. Trump a “racist”; another from 2020 showed her wearing a hat with the logo of the Biden campaign.

NPR has said that Ms. Maher, the former chief executive of Wikimedia, wasn’t working in news at the time she made the posts, and added that she was exercising her First Amendment right to free expression.

Over the years, Republicans have occasionally threatened to pull government money from NPR, which comes from the taxpayer-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. But those threats haven’t resulted in any significant funding reduction for the organization, which generates much of its revenue by selling radio programming to its member stations across the United States.
