The ambition of any person’s life usually depends on their choice and interests. I aspire to be a great dancer . I have always had the knack for dancing from an early age. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my passion. Like most of the parents, they never discouraged me because it is not the most sought after career.

Subsequently, I wish to become a good dancer. I do not want the fame of being a dancer; rather I want the acclaim of being a good dancer. As my parents motivated me to pursue my dream, they enrolled me in dance classes. It helped me grow a lot as a dancer and also enhance my skills.

Generally, this is one of the most reliable ways to figure out what your ambition in life is.

Every person decides at some point what he wants to become. And, in this era of modernization, I am aiming to become a doctor. Not just because my mom is a doctor but also it is a noble profession. 

Many people aspire to become an engineer, architects, dancers, interior designers etc. Amid all the other professions, there are some particular reasons behind my preference for becoming a doctor. 

A doctor is a person who saves others’ lives by treating them well. He helps people in curing all the diseases by giving them the required medicine or through surgery or various other procedures. Not only curing people by treatment but also a doctor must offer hope and joy to the patient and his family in times of difficulty. 

No One would be able to survive in this world if there was no doctor. Nothing could be greater than saving someone’s life and spreading joy in the world. 

However, it is not easy to become a doctor. I have to overcome a lot of hurdles to gain success. First I have to study hard and then I have to clear the medical entrance examination to secure a seat in a medical college first and then complete the programme to reach my goal. 

I want to be a doctor because I want to help those who cannot afford the cost of treatment of many difficult diseases. I have a goal of opening a hospital of my own that will be equipped with all the modern medical instruments. And those who require treatment but can’t afford the cost of it will be able to get treated in my hospital. I idolize Dr Devi Shetty, the well known cardiac surgeon. Hence I have decided to embark on this journey.

It is a long journey. But I am quite ambitious and I will put in a lot of hard work to fulfill my goal.

My first major breakthrough in my writing journey came when I won a school-wide essay competition. The topic was “My Vision for the World,” and I poured my heart and soul into crafting a powerful piece. 

The judges were impressed by my writing style and the depth of my ideas. I was awarded a cash prize and was invited to read my essay at the school assembly. The overwhelming response from my classmates and teachers further cemented my ambition to pursue writing as a career.

With ambition comes the fear of being over-ambitious. Growing up too fast only leads to longtime failure and resentment. So, we should always beware of an over-ambitious attitude. We should always measure our ambitions in life by calculating our steps and taking them accordingly.

In conclusion, our ambitions help us follow and achieve our goals in life. But, we should be very calculative and smart about what we desire. It is always wise to keep realistic ambition and move forward accordingly.

Everybody in this world has this innate desire to do something meaningful that will make a difference in other people’s lives. This desire to attain a meaningful position or become someone important is known as ambition. People can have different ambitions in life. But alongside traveling, now I want to write about different current events in politics and governments around the world. I also want to write and talk about the voting process in an impartial manner so that more people become aware and go vote. Furthermore, I want to cover stories on topics such as universal healthcare and education so as to keep the public informed about what steps are being taken by the government to improve these areas.

It is very important that everyone should have an ambition in life. It can be a big ambition or something small, but everyone should have an ambition. It’s the ambition of life that takes people to the top. If a person has no ambition in life, perhaps he/she cannot prove himself/herself as the best in front of the world.

People make different plans to fulfill their ambitions.

Ambitions not only enhance the concentration of the people but also clear their path. There can be different types of ambitions in life such as to become a doctor, to become an engineer, to become a scientist or many others that people keep in their minds.

Those who work hard and focus easily achieve their ambitions but those who only think but don’t focus are deprived of accomplishing them.

Therefore, ambitions shouldn’t be left thinking, but they should be followed firmly.

2. My ambition of life –

As everyone has an ambition in life, in the same way, I also have an ambition in life and my ambition is to become a software engineer.

I have been very fond of computers from the beginning. I’ve learnt many things from computers. That’s why I feel that I can do something better in this field.

Although my parents inspire me a lot for sports, but I’m not so much interested in sports as in computers.

Ever since I told my parents about my ambition to become a software engineer, they started supporting me.

3. Why do I want to become a software engineer –

When I was in class eight, I loved playing games on my computer. There was a game the name of which was GTA Vice City that I used to play very much.

One day, when I was playing GTA Vice City, a question came to my mind that, how games are made? and why do people make them?

When I researched about it, I came to know that software engineers make games and such types of other applications. The reason for making them is to earn money by advertising.

I was surprised by knowing this.

That’s why the desire to become a software engineer arose in me.

4. How will I fulfill my ambition –

When I was in class 10th, I started collecting information to fulfill my ambition. Now I’m in class 12th.

I’ll first pass the best competitive exam related to engineering so that I can get a good government engineering college to pursue B.Tech.

As I know that B.Tech is one of the best ways to become a software engineer. After completing four years of this course in Computer Science, I will pursue M.Tech. Then, I’ll apply to big software companies.

At the same time, I will also develop my own software and start a new start-up.

5. Conclusion –

Ambitions can be in anyone’s life. All you have to do is follow them sincerely. Everyone must have an ambition in his life. It’s so because you can’t do better without having any ambition.

Neither you will be successful nor will you be able to lead an ideal life.

We should never allow anybody to do activities which may destroy the balance and nature. The animals, plants, and trees along with other organisms have the same right as we do have on this planet. But we could see that we are forgetting our responsibilities towards our nature. As a social worker, I would be working for the upliftment of society as well as nature too.

There must be an ambition in everyone’s life. Life without an aim is meaningless. The objective in life to do or become something drives us with positivity and courage to fulfill the same. One should not waste the precious gift of god i.e. life in vain, instead, make it worth.

Many business leaders have told me they are deeply concerned about incidents of harassment against Jewish students that have taken place at and around universities like Columbia and appear to be increasing .

Inside corner offices, there has been a lot of hand-wringing about the most blatant examples, like antisemitic signs and chants or the assault of an Israeli student . But there has been little action from corporations, which have a synergistic relationship with the schools where they recruit employees.

Some executives are privately pondering what they can do. The most common course of action so far has been to pull back on individual donations. The New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, for example, said this week that he was “ no longer comfortable supporting Columbia University .”

But businesses have other levers that affect universities, and some of those levers would undoubtedly put more pressure on universities to take action against antisemitism.

Here’s one out-of-the-box thought experiment: Most businesses scrutinize their vendors quite carefully and maintain approved lists of vendors whose policies align with their own. Companies could scrutinize universities, a main source of their talent, as they would any other vendor. They could tell universities that they won’t hire their students unless the schools take decisive action to stem antisemitism.

After all, no company in this day and age would use an executive search firm with employees who openly engaged in antisemitism.

To be clear, companies would need to define antisemitism and the satisfactory actions to mitigate it — currently both topics of fierce debate.

And it is important to differentiate between peaceful protesters against Israel’s war in Gaza (who include many Jewish students, and who say they are being unfairly painted as antisemitic to distract from their objectives) and people who are calling for the death of Jews, harassing students and creating an unsafe environment. A decision to stop hiring all students from a particular school would inevitably punish some who have nothing to do with the worst offenders on campus.

But these corporate actions would put real pressure — including the pressure that would inevitably come from those uninvolved students — on college administrations to police blatant antisemitism.

There is another pressure point that Wall Street, private equity and venture capital firms may uniquely have to influence action against antisemitism on university campuses: They could threaten to stop managing their endowments. Most elite universities in America rely on venture capital firms for their relatively high investment returns.

Many university endowments send questionnaires and conduct due diligence on the internal policies of the Wall Street firms — examining their D.E.I. policies, for example. What would happen if the Wall Street firms also sent such questionnaires to the universities before deciding to work with them as clients?

“That’s a really interesting thought experiment,” said Charlie Eaton, the author of “Bankers in the Ivory Tower: The Troubling Rise of Financiers in U.S. Higher Education” and an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Merced. He said that such a decision would most likely have a big impact on the decision-making of universities, but would also raise big questions about “who is able to exercise what kind of power” in our economy.

Businesses may be unlikely to rush into formally patrolling universities’ policies by adopting either of these theoretical maneuvers, but they might amp up the pressure in some other way through their informal preferences. As Darren Woods, the chief executive of Exxon Mobil, said of campus protests in an interview with CNBC this week: “If that action or those protests reflect the values of the campuses where they’re doing it, we wouldn’t be interested in recruiting students from those campuses.” — Andrew Ross Sorkin

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

The F.T.C. banned noncompete agreements. The agency voted to stop companies from using the contracts , arguing that they inhibit innovation and competition and that they are bad for workers. The decision sent a shock wave across Wall Street, with companies and their advisers looking for other ways to keep staff , including expanding partnerships or L.L.C. structures and offering other incentives.

The mining giant BHP made a $39 billion takeover bid for its rival Anglo American. The proposal by the world’s largest mining company was all about getting more access to copper. The metal is a key component in the new energy economy, used in electric vehicles, infrastructure and more. Anglo American rejected the unsolicited offer , which could lead to a higher bid.

President Biden signed a bill that would force TikTok to split from its Chinese owner. The measure set the clock ticking on a potential sale by ByteDance to divest the video platform within 270 days or face a ban in the U.S. ByteDance denied a report that it was looking to sell the company.

Tech giants reported earnings, and A.I. dominated. Meta kicked off tech earnings season with its best-ever first quarter. But investors sent shares tumbling on worries over the high cost of its spending on artificial intelligence. A day later, Microsoft and Alphabet reported strong results and a similar commitment to A.I., but shareholders seemed more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and both stocks rose.

Daniel Ek’s next act

For years, Daniel Ek, Spotify’s chief executive, has been laying into one of his personal peeves, the health care system. Among his beefs: Despite rising medical costs, many wealthy countries are making few, if any, gains in life expectancy.

Ek has left plenty of clues over the years that once he got Spotify on the right track — this week, the streaming giant posted a record first-quarter profit after layoffs last year — health care could be his next act. “I was like adamant to fix it,” Ek told DealBook.

That next act is Neko Health , a start-up that says its full-body scans can help people detect disease sooner and live longer. Ek is a principal backer and co-founder of the company, along with another Swedish entrepreneur, Hjalmar Nilsonne. (It’s only the second time since Spotify that Ek has put the founder hat back on; the other was with his investment fund, Prima Materia.)

Ek and Nilsonne spoke to DealBook’s Bernhard Warner about their ambitions for Neko Health last month. Warner also underwent a scan. Read the full story and see what the procedure entails here .

Neko Health has been doing brisk business in its first year in Stockholm . But it is relatively unknown outside Sweden. Last year, it closed a $64 million funding round, led by the venture capital firms Lakestar, Atomico and General Catalyst, to expand to more markets. The first: London, this summer.

The full-body scan market is crowded , with start-ups like Prenuvo and Ezra in the U.S. attracting investors and social media buzz. The concept has also faced plenty of skepticism. Medical professionals say proactive screening technologies are not proven to achieve better outcomes for patient health or longevity. And the verdict is still out on the business model.

“I would be super happy if this turned out to make me no money, but we actually solved real issues in the world for real people,” Ek said.

Neko Health’s twist: It wants to make full-body scans as affordable and routine as an annual checkup. Its scan costs roughly $230, which is cheaper than most competitors’, including Prenuvo’s $2,499 full-body M.R.I. scan.

The company’s founders acknowledge a slew of challenges. Regulatory hurdles are arduous, and the emergent preventative health care sector is still contending with increased skepticism in the wake of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes’s failed blood-testing start-up that promised to usher in “ a new era of preventative health .”

“Blowouts” like Theranos, Mr. Ek said, risk undermining the public “trust in all of the subsequent companies that are coming.”

The metric Ek is most proud of: The company says the scans have helped patients detect life-threatening issues early. “You can actually save lives with this,” Ek said, adding, “and we have.”

What is “Xi Jinping thought”?

Xi Jinping thought is essentially about making China great again, both domestically and externally, by 2050. It’s based on a mythical conception of restoring China to its historic place at the center of the world.

How does this connect to Xi’s approach to the rest of the world?

Xi wants to change the liberal international order by capturing institutions, like the United Nations, and transforming how they function to make them more China-friendly at the minimum or Sinocentric at the maximum.

It also helps to explain why he is so hard-line on issues like Taiwan. From his perspective, China cannot be made great again without taking Taiwan back one way or another. And it will need to happen by 2050.

What does this mean for business?

Xi is not against the private sector or foreign multinationals per se. The question is whether they are serving China’s national interest or not. If they are, terrific. When they cease to do so, they can sink or swim.

For example, Tesla. When China wanted to crack the electric vehicle sector, Tesla was given special concessions to build its giga-factory in Shanghai. Once Chinese companies could compete with Tesla — and arguably outcompete Tesla — the company wasn’t granted any more special concessions.

Are western C.E.O.s naĂŻve when it comes to China?

No. What I would say is that they make the cardinal mistake of underestimating the Chinese and their Chinese competitors. When Tesla went into China, did Elon Musk seriously think that BYD was going to give him a run for his money? No. It’s an incapacity to understand the resourcefulness of Chinese competitors.

Analysis Housing density has surged across Australia's cities, yet home prices keep hitting fresh records

It's the number one issue around Australia, particularly in our biggest cities, groaning under record population growth — finding somewhere affordable to live.

Whether it's renting or buying, it has never been more expensive (at least in nominal terms) to find somewhere to call home across most of the nation.

After decades of policies mainly directed at giving out public money to allow people to pay even more — think first home buyer grants and rent assistance — attention is finally turning to other solutions.

The new fad is YIMBYism — the "yes in my backyard" counter to those NIMBYs who want to freeze the heart of cities at an arbitrary point in time.

Roughly a decade old, the YIMBY movement demands that localities start catering to the needs of prospective residents, not just their existing ones, by building more homes, even if it comes at a cost to the amenity of those who already live there.

And governments are catching on, with recent  New South Wales changes to override local planning and heritage controls within 400 metres of key train stations and urban centres poised to take effect.

But, despite the catchy new title, the idea of building up rather than out is not a new one.

I wrote about the benefits of increased urban density and the dangers of NIMBYism in this piece for the ABC in 2011 — does that make me an unwitting precursor to the YIMBY movement?

Although, long before that article, many urban economists (such as my honours supervisor Frank Stilwell) and planners had written extensively about the costs — financial, environmental and social — of urban sprawl.

So, the key tenets of YIMBYism aren't new, just the catchy label and proliferation of activist groups under its banner. But is the cause more urgent now than it was in 2011?

Some new figures from CoreLogic shed light on that question.

They leave no doubt our cities have densified considerably over the past two decades, long before YIMBYs clamoured for it.

Nationally, our capitals are squeezing 40 per cent more people into the same land area than they were in 2003.

That's against a 35 per cent increase in population over the same period.

So, despite a brief exodus to the regions during COVID-19, all of our population growth and then some has gone into our major cities.

That doesn't mean there hasn't been urban sprawl, however.

Sydney's statistical boundaries, for example, include the Blue Mountains and Central Coast, explaining why it has a lower population density than Melbourne or Adelaide, despite having the highest proportion of apartments of any Australian city — just under 40 per cent of dwellings, compared to Melbourne's 33.4 per cent.

(Although, even that sprawl has become denser, with the average new home block size in Sydney declining by nearly a fifth over the decade to 2021.)

It is clear from CoreLogic's analysis of ABS statistics — and hardly surprising — that Sydney and Melbourne comfortably lead Australia for high-density living.

You have to get to 27th on the list before Brisbane's Fortitude Valley breaks up the domination of the big two metropolises for dense localities.

The big change in the past 20 years has been between Sydney and Melbourne.

In 2003, CoreLogic says the 16 densest localities in Australia were all within Sydney, with only one of the top 20 outside, on the east side of Melbourne's CBD.

By 2023, while Sydney still dominates with 13 of the top 20, Melbourne now has seven, including the top two — the north side of Melbourne's CBD and Southbank east.

Melbourne has increased its population density by 45 per cent over the past two decades.

In the same period, Sydney has managed only a 31 per cent rise in density.

You can see the dramatic change vividly in this graph and it could reasonably be argued that is one reason why Melbourne has seen more moderate home price rises than Sydney on average over recent years.

Australia's densest locality, the north end of Melbourne's CBD, has more than seven times more people living in it than it did in 2003.

Not that Sydney hasn't seen some similarly spectacular developments, with sites near the former Olympic village, such as Rhodes, which were once industrial areas, going from almost no residents to more than 12,000, and the apartment boom at Zetland in Sydney's inner-south seeing density soar nine-fold.

But, as you can see from the above graph, one of Sydney's biggest handicaps to ramping up density is that many of its inner suburbs had already been very heavily populated to start with.

Take Potts Point, Surry Hills and my old haunt Darlinghurst. A decade ago they were all comfortably in the top 10 densest localities, but their populations have slightly declined since and been overtaken by new mega developments.

YIMBYs would argue that it's anti-development lobbying by existing residents and heritage protections in these areas that have seen their populations stagnate.

To some extent, this is no doubt true.

But, regulatory hurdles aside, it's more time-consuming and expensive for a developer to buy out an existing apartment building full of owners, demolish it and then replace it with a new building sufficiently bigger to both cover the costs and deliver a profit.

To a lesser extent, the same applies when negotiating with the different owners of several standalone houses to acquire enough land for a block of units.

It's much more economical to buy old industrial land and turn it into a high-rise, plus this has the added benefit of there being no or few existing residents to oppose the plans.

Even on such sites and without bureaucratic delays, it simply takes a lot of time and money to construct a block of high-rise apartments.

'Supply-first strategy unlikely to result in cheaper dwellings'

And this is the flaw in the arguments from the more extremist YIMBY proponents.

This form of YIMBYism advocates a totally supply-side response favoured by sections of the orthodox economics community which take demand as a given and therefore see more output as the only solution whenever prices rise.

This thinking underpins the federal government's ambition to build 1.2 million new homes over the next five years, as well as state policies such as the New South Wales government's Transport Oriented Development planning overrides intended to contribute to that goal.

But, when it comes to housing, supply can never keep up if demand expands unchecked, either through high levels of population growth or policies that encourage the existing population to consume more.

ANZ chief economist Richard Yetsenga argues that experience suggests relying solely on new home building and increased density to fix the housing affordability challenge is "slow and complex" and "unlikely to affect the supply-demand balance in a timely manner".

"A supply-first housing-affordability strategy is unlikely to result in cheaper dwellings," he writes.

"The cost of new builds is critical to this strategy because the marginal price of new builds must inevitably be linked to the price of existing dwellings.

"If existing dwellings are cheaper than new ones (allowing for some consumer preference), new build commencements will dry up.

"New supply either won't be sustained or prices of existing dwellings will rise. Either way, the affordability challenge is unlikely to be meaningfully addressed."

The cost and quantity of new housing development is highly exposed to factors such as interest rates, credit availability, skilled labour availability and materials costs.

"Dwellings are likely to suffer from diseconomies of scale, whereby the cost of new dwellings rises as the number of new builds increases," Yetsenga explains.

This is a phenomenon we saw during the COVID stimulus period, where surging demand from ultra-low interest rates and the Morrison government's HomeBuilder subsidy collided with supply chain bottlenecks to fuel the biggest rise in building costs on record, at more than 20 per cent per annum.

Is it any wonder those rising costs eventually fed through into price increases for existing homes, despite the higher cost of debt?

As Yetsenga goes on to point out, Australia has about 11 million dwellings for 26 million people, or less than 2.4 people per home, which does not suggest a massive shortage in physical space to house the population.

Yet a raft of policies interact to encourage Australians to over-invest in their homes and discourage them from freeing up their capital (and spare rooms) by downsizing into smaller dwellings when appropriate.

Among them, the tax-free status of the family home, its complete exclusion from various assets tests (notably the aged pension) and stamp duty discouraging property transactions.

The replacement of stamp duty with land taxes, including on owner-occupied properties, would further encourage the efficient use of land by charging people who sit on under-utilised large blocks in prime locations.

That's not to say building more well-located homes and putting the needs of would-be residents on a more level footing with existing ones are not useful objectives that should, over time, improve affordability.

But, to again quote ANZ's Richard Yetsenga: "Pragmatic interventions to manage demand and limit the misallocation of housing may well hold more promise than supply alone."

Unfortunately such policies don't have the same support from the well-funded property developer lobby.
