Writing skills are sometimes a God gift but you have to polish your writing skills too so that you can reach wider. It is the same with the writing skills in the Kannada language too! If you know the language and want to write something in Kannada, then here is how you can improve your writing skills in Kannada quickly!

kannada

Ways to improve my writing skills:

1.learn correct grammar:.

If you are interested in writing then first of all you should focus on correct grammar because written work attracts more critics. Spoken words remain for a short time and some mistakes are acceptable in the speech but the written work is for longer and it is proof of your writing style too. Correct grammar will make you more acceptable. On the other hand, you would be able to understand other writers’ works to improve yourself. This will take some time, but you will be able to express your thoughts more clearly. Remember! Correct Grammar includes correct spellings and punctuations too!

2. Observe others:

If you want to improve your writing skills, then read the works of other writers first. Choose the genre according to your need. For example, if you are interested in writing poems, read poems. If you are interested in in-formal writing, read such works. This will not only get you ideas, but it will also make you able to understand writing styles and various sentence structures.

3. Observe your writing:

If you are writing a piece of work then observe it as if you are observing it from the point of view of a reader. For this, read the piece loudly and slowly. Read it again and again. You will notice your points of improvement naturally! This is the best way to improve writing skills as it can make your writing clearer and better.

This includes drafting and re-drafting your matter. Writing, again and again, makes you practice more structures, styles, and words thus improving your knowledge too!

4. Remember the target:

Many times it happens that you lose focus while focusing on the style and structure. So! Don’t lose your target i.e. the message or the essence of the writing that you want to give to your audience. For this, you should also focus on linking lines, paragraphs, or incidents that connect different parts of your work.

5. Take some guidance:

If you are thinking to write professionally, you should take some guidance from experts. This will help you understand the drawbacks of your style. For this, you can enroll yourself in any offline or online institution that is available to you. I recommend Multibhashi here!

happy-women

Multibhashi is an online language learning institution that provides sessions to learn many Indian languages including Kannada. They provide expert guidance and other materials to help you improve your writing.

Remember that writing includes many aspects and you should keep all the aspects while writing your artwork. Audiences’ choice, theme, interest, proper conveying of the message, grammar, vocabulary, structure, and genre all these aspects are the basic ones.  Also, remember! A written work is valuable only if it impacts the hearts, soul, and mind of its audience. The lesser the impact of the writing, the poorer it will be considered. So! Always try to make your work impactful! All the best!

Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ)

Kannada is a Southern Dravidian language spoken mainly in the state of Karnataka in the southwest of India. There are also Kannada speakers in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Goa and Kerala, and in the USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In 2011 there were about 56.4 million speakers of Kannada, including 43 million native speakers.

Kannada is the official and administrative language of Karnataka, and was officially designated a classical language of India in 2011. It is also known as Banglori, Canarese, Havyaka or Kanarese.

Written Kannada

Kannada first appeared in writing as words in Tamil inscriptions dating from the 3rd-1st centuries BC. The earliest known texts in Old Kannada were written in the Brahmi script and are dated at 450 AD. Poetry in Kannada started to appear in 700 AD, and literary works from 850 AD.

From the 14th century Kannada was sometimes written with the Tigalari alphabet , which developed in the 12th century in Karnataka.

The Kannada alphabet (ಕನ್ನಡ ಲಿಪಿ) developed from the Kadamba and Cālukya scripts, descendents of Brahmi , which were used between the 5th and 7th centuries AD. These scripts developed into the Old Kannada script, which by about 1500 had morphed into the Kannada and Telugu scripts. Under the influence of Christian missionary organizations, Kannada and Telugu scripts were standardized at the beginning of the 19th century.

Poetry Guide: Kannada Poetry

Kannada poetry is poetry written in the Kannada language spoken in Karnataka state of India. Karnataka is the land that gave birth to seven Jnanapeeth award winners, the highest honour bestowed for Indian literature. From the period of Pampa, who proclaimed his wish to be reborn as a little bee in the land of Kannada, Kannada poetry has come a long way to Kuvempu and Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre.

Pre-history

Kannada poetry has been traced back to around 5th century A.D, though none of those early works have been found. The first well known Kannada poet was Pampa who wrote in an archaic style of kannada called Halegannada (literally "Old Kannada"). His Vikramarjuna Vijaya is hailed as a classic even to this day. With this and his other important work Adipurana he set a trend of poetic excellence for the Kannada poets of the future.

Haiku before Haiku!

Kannada had poetry similar to haiku in the 12th century. This form of poetry, called vachanas, were three liners which were pithy comments on that period's social, religious and economic conditions. More importantly, they hold a mirror to the seed of a social revolution, which caused a radical re-examination of the ideas of caste, creed and religion. One of the important ideas coming out of this revolution was the view that Work is worship and a path to spirituality.

Kannada poets have the unique distinction of sowing the seeds of one of the richest forms of classical music: South Indian Carnatic music. The Dasas or saints, around 15th century, sang the glory of God through poems. These poems called Padas were usually of 10 to 20 lines. They expressed the desire of the Bhakta or devotee to be one with God. This form of poetry was highly amenable to musical composition and exposition. This music evolved into the highly sophisticated and codified Carnatic music.

The Haridasas spread the message of peace, love and bhakti in their Dasa Sahitya, which are also popularly known Devaranamas

Navodaya (New birth)

Navodaya literally means a new birth . This indeed was the reincarnation of Kannada poetry which was dormant for quite a few centuries in the face of British occupation of India. This period saw greats like Srikanthaiah, Kuvempu, Bendre, Shivaram Karanth writing poetry. This genre was highly influenced by Romantic English poetry. It was Srikanthaiah who started this movement of sorts with his translation of a few critically acclaimed English poems of the Romantic period. Many educated Kannadigas, especially those were in the teaching profession, realised that they need to express themselves in their mother tongue and started writing poetry in Kannada. Kuvempu is a case in point who was convinced by his professor (of British origin) that he should write in his mother tongue. Kuvempu went on to become a Rashtrakavi (national poet). His love of nature, realisation of the greatness of man's spirit and the vision to see the blend of nature and God made him more than Kannada's Wordsworth. Another interesting case is that of Shivaram Karanth who was a man of great intellect, rock-solid convictions and a profound social sense. He was the Leonardo da Vinci of Karnataka.

Navya (New)

Indian Independence in 1947 brought with it the promises of freedom and a new genre sprouted in Kannada poetry. The torch-bearer of this tradition was Gopalakrishna Adiga. The Navya poets wrote for and like disillusioned intellectuals. The sophistication in the use of language and the importance of technique to poetry reached new heights in this genre.

Kannada poetry in the last 50 years has been closely related to social aspects. The cruel caste system gave rise to the Bandaya and Dalita genres of poetry. The atrocities of women and the general ill-treatment meted out to them in Indian society gave rise to the Stri (Woman) genre of poetry.

The fact that holds testament to the greatness of Kannada poetry is that it has won seven Jnanapeeth awards, the highest for any Indian language. Even Hindi, India's national language has got lesser.

Reaching people

The popularity of poetry is gauged in terms of the response that the educated and interested elite give. But the real popularity of poetry is when common people sing it. Popular appeal is not very easy to achieve for any form of poetry; especially when audiences are not kept in mind. Kannada poetry has a few instances of such mass popularity. Kumaravyasa's epic retelling of the Mahabharata is recited in homes even today. Bhavageete (literally "emotion poetry") has popularized many a Kannada poems and has people humming them.
