How to Get Quality Art Research From Your Students

Isn’t it annoying when you see a beautifully presented research page and then quickly realise the information is just chunks of info that have been cut and paste from the internet?  Where’s the stickability in that?  They are not going to retain it for long.  How do you get quality art research from all of your students? Here are a few solutions for extracting quality research from your classes.

Set Questions

I’ve been guilty of saying “Research 10 facts on [insert artists name here]” and this has produced exactly the wrong result described above.  A much better approach is to set specific questions that you would like them to research.  Of course, this is time-consuming, but once you have created them for a particular artist, you’ve always got them, and it makes your students hunt for the information.

You might want to give them a passage of information to work from or to direct them to a particular website.  There are many child-friendly websites such as Ducksters that have artist biographies.

I have used crosswords for the homework prior to asking students to make a research page on an artist.  This way they have already done some research and it usually raises the quality of the information or annotation on the research pages.  There is a growing bank of crosswords on The Arty Teacher just click the image below to learn more.

crosswords for art teachers quality research

Teach About Chronology

The sort of research pages I ask students to make have pictures and facts spread across them.  I’ve seen a few research pages over the years where students tell me all about an artists death and then they go on to tell me, lower down the page, about an exhibition the artist has had.  Was this the ghost of the artist?  Teaching your students about how we scan down a page from top to bottom and from left to right is a good idea.

Personal Response

How do you get quality art research that includes a personal response? Do you want your students to add their personal response to a research page or do you just want facts?  If you want a personal response, what do your students think about the artists work?  Do they like or dislike it?  Can they talk about a particular artwork that they like?  Do you want them to include subject-specific language? If they had to make work in the style of the artist what would they create?  The year group or grade you teach might influence what approach you take.

Explain how you will be assessing the research page that they create.  This could be a simple list of what needs to be included plus extra marks for presentation.  You or your school might want to have an emphasis on grammar and punctuation.  You might want to highlight that neat cutting out and sticking down of the artist’s work is part of good presentation.  You might want them to reflect the artists work in the way they create the research page.  Different art departments have different ways of doing things.  Sharing what you are looking for and how it will be assessed is good practice and will appeal to students who are hungry for good grades.  Having a good example to show them is a great way to raise the standard. There are many assessment resources for art teachers on The Arty Teacher website.

Art Literacy

Are there keywords that you would like them to include?  If I was asking students to create a research page on Matisse I might insist that their work includes the words Fauvism, oil paint, France or French, and Cut-Outs.  You could take this approach with many artists and topics to make sure literacy is embedded in the homework you set.

Stand Up – Sit Down!

This is a fun game to encourage in-depth research and longer-term retention of information.  You ask your students to research a minimum of ten facts about an artist.  They can do this in rough at the back of their sketchbooks.  You tell them that they will be playing a game at the start of the next lesson and that they will not be able to look at their facts when they play it.  At the start of the next lesson, you give them 3 or 4 minutes to look at their facts.  This acts as revision as they have already researched these facts at home.  Research shows revisiting information is essential to remembering information.  You then ask them to close their books.  Then, all the students stand up.  You randomly choose a student to say the first fact.  They say it and then choose the next student to say a fact. To start with, they have to choose a student who has not been chosen.  Each student states a fact until they can’t.  When they can’t they have to sit down.  The choice goes back to the previous student to choose another student.  Eventually, only a few students will be left standing and you keep playing until there is only one student left standing and they are the winner.  My students have loved this game!

The download below ‘Research Page Do’s & Don’ts’ is an editable list of things you would like your students to include on a research page and things you would like them not to do.  I get all my students to stick this in the back of their sketchbooks and it has really raised attainment.

Handouts to get great artist research & analysis

art research homework

One simple step to improve artist research in your students sketchbooks: give them the material – text information, images and questions – they need to come up with meaningful insights and high quality responses. Easier said than done, possibly… I have long been perplexed at the lack of writing and publishing on the artists that are most inspirational to young people. There are plenty of writing frames out there, and suggested approaches to analysis, but succinct and accessible materials? Not so much…

So, I have started a bank of my own. They are time consuming and take a fair bit of thought, particularly working out practical responses that are more than just copying or pastiche for each artist, but they have proved so useful and versatile in the classroom. I have posted an example below (click on the text below to download the ppt file) on the artist Angie Lewin who makes stunning prints inspired by plants and nature – she is a real favourite with students…

All of these are available as digital downloads in the felt-tip-pen resources shop , or you can find them in my Teachers Pay Teachers store . There’s thumbnail of each at the bottom of this post, to give you a better idea.

I hope they are useful to you – perhaps also for cover lessons, extension tasks, or independent learning? Let me know what you think – I’d love suggestions for other artists. You can also find a general artist research template here .

How to Research an Artist or a Work of Art

  • How to research an artist

Where is it located?

Research the artist, unknown artist.

Profile Photo

Gather all the information you can about the work, this is know as the artwork's "tombstone information"

  • date or approximate date

Make a list of what other information you need for the research project/paper/ assignment and why. Thinking about the work of art and information needed can help you narrow down your research.

Do you know where it is located?

If you know what museum or gallery the work of art is located in, check the institutions’s website for more detailed information on that piece. Many museums and galleries will provide the most up to date information on items in their collections. The museum your artwork is located in may also have their own collection-specific guides to help researchers. Some examples are listed below.

Researching the artist is often the best way to learn about the art work you have chosen.  For more information on researching an artist please see above. The following databases are good places to search for information on your artist.

Citations / Abstracts / Indices

What if you don't know the artist?

If you do not know the artist of your object, you will have to research characteristics of the work.

  • Where was it created?
  • When was it made?
  • What style is it?    How can you tell?
  • What are the materials used?
  • What are some similar works?

This will help you learn the context of your object and make informed conclusions about the work.  Use other works/artists that are similar as examples to support your ideas.

How to research an artwork: research process, research process.

  • Identification
  • Authentication
  • Art Theft and Forgeries
  • Finding Library Resources

The resources available today, particularly those licensed for UC Berkeley students and faculty, make it possible to uncover the story behind a famous painting with relative ease.  Given the artist’s name and the title or year of the work, it’s possible to determine a painting’s historical context, artist biography and provenance – and identify high-quality images found both in books and digitally in image databases.

This guide provides an introduction to doing research on an artwork you know nothing about.  Paintings inherited from relatives are often surrounded by family lore, which can sometimes provide helpful clues as to the piece’s identity, but can also keep us from viewing the art objectively.  Murkier still are the histories of artworks plucked from yard sale piles and thrift store walls.  Are they priceless treasures, or merely pleasant to look at?  Finding the answers to these kinds of questions requires an entirely different approach to research, one that relies less on your ability to “google” and more on your ability to glean clues from the artwork in hand.

Auction Houses

For those who don’t wish to pursue this research on their own, many auction houses offer free appraisal days, when you may bring your art to the gallery and receive a no-obligation assessment and appraisal by auction house employees.  Additionally, appraisers are often willing to offer advice on research resources for your particular artwork.  The links below include information to several Bay Area auction houses (note: Christie’s and Sotheby’s only have field offices in San Francisco):

Brainstorm Search Terms

Below are some basic search terms that work well in our databases. A research librarian can also help you identify additional terms supporting your specific assignment.

Art history

Baroque art

Medieval art

Photography,

art - Combine this subject term with names of specific artistic movements, geographic regions, time periods, etc. (for example: African American Art  or Art, Africa)

names of specific artists

The content of your paper is dictated by your professor's assignment prompt. Read it carefully, as following the guidelines laid out by your professor is crucial to your success. If the assignment prompt confuses you, consider attending your professor's office hour or emailing them for clarification.  MJC research librarians are happy to help you understand the guidelines laid out in your assignment.

Check out these useful links providing guidance and tips for students tasked with writing about art. These links are meant to serve as a supplement to your professor's assignment prompt and the material in this guide.

  • Writing about Paintings From the Thompson Writing Program at Duke University, this handout provides specific information on how to analyze paintings.
  • Writing about Photography From the Thompson Writing Program at Duke University, this handout is part of their amazing Visual Rhetoric/Visual Literacy Series. It focuses on how to write about photography.
  • Guidelines for Analysis of Art Writing a formal analysis of a work of art is one of the fundamental skills learned in art appreciation class. This handout guides students through the process.

Research questions will keep you focused and on task. Sometimes your professor will include specific questions they want addressed within the prompt.  A research librarian can also help you develop questions based on the parameters of the assignment.

Below are some generic questions that can help you get started on researching an artistic movement or era :.

Why is this movement important to art history?

What characteristics are common to works in this movement?

What is the history of this movement? When, why and how did it begin?

Who are the important artists of the movement? What are the important works?

What subsequent movements/artists has this movement and its artists inspired?

Based on my research, what do I think about this movement's significance to American art history?

Here are some useful questions focusing on a specific work of art :

Who is the artist? Provide biographical information about him/her.

What is the medium of the work of art? Can you provide a physical description?

Can you describe the different artistic elements present in the work (line, shape, light, color, texture, space, time, motion, etc.)

What is the affect of these various elements?

In what country/culture was this work created? When?

What other art was being created in this culture at this time?

To what artistic movement does this work of art belong? Describe it.

In what ways is the chosen work of art representative of the movement? In what ways is it unique?

Art Research Paper Topics

Students obtaining degrees in fine art and art & design programs most commonly need to write a paper on art topics. However, this subject is becoming more popular in educational institutions for expanding students’ horizons. Thus, both groups of receivers of education: those who are into arts and those who only get acquainted with art basics, need to write unique and engaging art research papers.

At first glance, art seems an extensive subject with many aspects to investigate. But sometimes, it’s overwhelming to understand and contextualize art epochs, movements, and representatives in their art history research paper. It is challenging to sort out what art research paper topics are worth investigating. Writing about art and especially finding the appropriate art research topics is more complicated than making art.

Therefore, in this article, you will explore compelling ideas for your future art research paper topics. Move on and get inspired to create a unique research theme that will bring you academic success.

Choosing the Right Art Research Paper Topics

You can find an abundance of art research paper topics on the internet, but it’s not guaranteed they are good for you. There are certain things to consider before choosing the art paper theme and start working on it. Take a look at tips on how to select the best art history research paper topic and compile a high-quality study.

Select the Art Category

People have been creating aesthetic objects and experiences and sharing their masterpieces for centuries. There are traditionally distinguished seven branches of art, including literature, music, architecture, the graphic arts, the visual arts, the plastic arts, the decorative arts, and the performing arts. So before browsing art topics, choose the art branch you will further research.

Decide What to Study

Sound art research topics do not cover everything in one paper. It’s necessary to define what art aspect will be subjected to research in the study. Students can select an artistic movement like romanticism, realism, baroque, classicism, or surrealism for the most interesting art topics. It’s also possible to research an art epoch, a prominent artist, or a piece of art.

Brainstorm Ideas

For choosing the best theme of possible art research paper topics, come up with ideas and do prior research. Find out what is relevant to cover for today, what has not been investigated thoroughly, whether there are enough sources for references, and if the art research paper theme you want to explore corresponds to your course plan and instructions.
