When I hear the term “3D,” I’m instantly transported to a crowded theater with lots of people wearing funny looking glasses and grasping for objects as they whizz by. For most of us, that’s our primary frame of reference for 3D. Well, that or all the cool stuff 3D printers are churning out these days. But did you know that presenters are using incredible technology to create 3D presentation media?

Today we are going to look at the pros and cons of 3D presentations, helping you to determine when and how to use them and when to stick to the basics.

Pros of 3D Presentations

Immersive experience.

We are oriented towards a 3D model of the world, which means a 2D presentation can sometimes feel lack luster. One of the incredible benefits of a 3D presentation is that it can immerse the audience in whatever you are trying to teach. In other words, it offers audience members a chance to get inside . For example, say you are presenting employees at your company with a first look at the new company headquarters that is under construction. It’s one thing just to show them pictures of what the building will look like. It’s quite another to take them on a tour of the 3D model. When 3D presentations are used without clear purpose or are used too much, they become “extra.” The audience might think, “that was sort of cool, but what was the point?” When they start asking that, your presentation isn’t far from ridicule.

How innovative uses of 3D are transforming entire industries

Coca-Cola: Creating photorealistic product shots on the desktop

Coca-Cola recently used innovative 3D technology and a digital workflow to create a unified design experience for a new global hard seltzer brand — without any marketing budget. In his MAX talk, Benny Lee, global manager of digital design at Coca-Cola, explains how the beverage giant designed and developed the visual identity completely in-house.

“Adobe Substance 3D Stager served as a cornerstone of this initiative,” Lee says. “It’s essentially a virtual photo studio that you operate from your desktop. This meant that we could quickly develop multiple concepts and production-quality assets that were on par with a real-life photoshoot.” In the end, a small internal team at Coca-Cola managed to develop a major physical brand product in a completely new category and with a 100 percent digital workflow.

An integral part of this success was also Adobe Stock . During the concept exploration phase, the team turned to Adobe Stock’s huge library of 3D models to find the assets they needed to set up realistic scenes in just hours. Designers that used Substance 3D Stager for the first time were then able to produce realistic high-fidelity 3D renders within a day, and since everyone used the same tool and were already used to working in Creative Cloud , they were able to easily share concepts with each other and iterate on new ideas at a faster pace.

“When you remove the barrier to entry and flatten the learning curve,” Lee points out, “the designers are able to focus on what they do best and directly translate the vision that they have in their mind onto the screens and bring it to life.”

INDG: Taking 3D models from digitization to full customer experience

Product visualization agency INDG helps brands such as Puma, Yves Saint Laurent, and Yamaha move into 3D and adapt digital processes. At Adobe MAX 2021, Bastiaan Geluk, INDG’s head of digital fashion, took us behind the scenes of the CGI specialists’ process and how they use 3D technology, including Adobe Substance 3D, to enable consumer engagement.

“The myth of 3D not meeting the same quality as photography is pretty much bust by now,” Geluk points out. “3D models become so realistic that consumers can’t tell if they’re looking at a photo of the product or a 3D visualization.”

INDG goes through three main steps to create effective 3D implementations. The starting point is always to digitize the client’s product portfolio. Initially, the virtual samples still function as 3D sketches that help the design and marketing departments with the internal creation process. Next, the INDG team adds a photorealistic quality to the 3D assets to deliver consumer-facing visual content for ecommerce and marketing. The final step is to enhance the 3D models and put them into context to deliver rich immersive and interactive experiences, from product configurators to virtual stores and augmented reality try-ons.

Skeeva: Creating unique apparel designs with 3D tools

Freelance 3D artist Eugene Golovanchuk (aka Skeeva) specializes in digital fashion and creates high-quality apparel designs in 3D for clients like Adidas, Apple, and SpaceX. In his Adobe MAX 2021 session, he takes us through his workflow, from the initial concept of an outfit via fabric prototyping to final color correction.

Skeeva starts his projects by quickly creating a 3D concept in Marvelous Designer, which he then imports into Substance 3D Painter to create more detailed fabric combinations and texturing with the help of Substance 3D Assets . In the next step, Skeeva sends his design to Substance 3D Stager to make the outfit stand out with a basic camera and lighting setup. Finally, the render is finalized in Photoshop with some fast color corrections and minor tweaks.

Interactive Installation “Mobile Camera” for Instagram Project

United 3D Labs, commissioned by IQ Marketing Agency, has created “Mobile camera” interactive installation for a joint project of Beeline mobile operator and Multimedia Art Museum (MAMM) in Moscow.

Social networks today play an important role in self-determination of a person. Everyone can share his or her thoughts and ideas with the world and other users of VK or Instagram. Many large companies have already taken this opportunity by promoting their products in social networks. A striking example is a large-scale project of Beeline mobile operator and Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (MAMM).

We believe that the installation placed in the MAMM has become one of the most successful ways to convey the idea that every person can share his or her out of the box view on certain problems or simply anything worth looking into with a wide audience. The idea of the project is that any Instagram user can take a picture and upload it with the hashtag #beeline_mamm. The most popular ones are displayed in the Multimedia Art Museum.

The interactive installation developed by United 3D Labs consists of a large screen with two projectors. Photos that you can see on the screen are the ones taken directly from Instagram. The installation is gesture controlled: any visitor can scroll through the pictures, choose the most interesting ones and print them right away. This way we create a sort of unconventional dialogue between a contemporary artist and his audience.

The installation works in two modes: when there are no active users (nobody stands in front of the screen), random photos with the hashtag #beeline_mamm are shown. The more likes the photo has, the larger it is. The second mode is active. The user controls the screen by gestures, looking at photos with the speed that is convenient to him or her. At the same time, the photos are arranged depending on their popularity among Instagram users. You can print your favorite photo with a sweep of your hand. It’s as easy as that!

How to Select a Wireless Presentation System

For the last two decades, sharing a screen in a meeting room required cables, AV switchers, and touch panels. These systems typically start at US$10,000 plus custom programming.

Today’s new HDMI wireless presentation and conferencing systems offer far more flexibility and ease of use – at a fraction of the cost of a traditional wired system. But how do you pick the best one for your needs? There are three major types of wireless presentation systems available today:

• Button Based Solutions – Use a physical connection to your notebook for screen mirroring and video conferencing.
• Wi-Fi Network Hub Solutions – Use the company Wi-Fi network to connect your notebook.
• Wireless HDMI TV Solutions – Use streaming protocols built into your PC

We will look at the three types of presentations solutions to look at the pros and cons of each system and what the trade-offs are based on your usage models. The key factors we will look at will be:

• How easy they are to use, especially for visitors?
• How much do they cost and how much IT support is needed to setup and manage?
• How do these systems secure your presentation content from hackers and unauthorized viewing?

Button-Based Solutions

These systems use physical button transmitter that connects to a visitor’s laptop and wirelessly transmits the HDMI signal to a receiver located near the projector or flat panel. To switch presenters, the new presenter simply presses their button and the screen switches to their notebook or device. These systems also  have major security advantages  of these over generic systems since the wireless signal is encrypted to keep hackers and sniffers from viewing the signal on an unauthorized receiver and are CVSS 3.0 certified

From a set up perspective, they are IT-friendly and easy to install for basic screen mirroring, since the receivers set up their own hidden wireless network and don’t require any special IT support for basic functionality.  For a typical meeting, they can split the screen to handle multiple presenters, and have the ability to use an interactive display to control your presentation. 

While most video conferencing in a meeting room is done on a dedicated PC, the BenQ InstaShow VS and Barco Clickshare both have the ability to support video conferencing.   Simply plug in your webcam and microphone to the receiver, and you can support any video conferencing system using your notebook.  The InstaShow adds another layer of security by enabling visitors to use the button to connect to the internet – without having to login to the main network.

Wi-Fi Network Hub-Based Solutions

These solutions utilize the company network to enable laptops and other devices to share a screen. The system uses a receiver hub that is connected to the corporate network, similar to the receivers used in the hardware approach used by Barco and BenQ but relies on specialized software apps to capture and transmit the signal to the correct screen over the enterprise WiFi network.

Setup and Ease of Use

Wi-Fi typically requires visitors and employees to load software onto their notebooks.

For a visitor to use a system, they will need to:

• Install the manufacturer’s display application software onto their notebook or device
• Log onto the correct enterprise network to access the receiver
• Pick the correct display receiver

There are two primary disadvantages of the Wi-Fi network hub-based solution. First, the system typically requires a proprietary app to be loaded onto the laptop, which can be a major problem when a visitor does not have the rights – or is concerned that the software could contain malware or other hidden codes. Many companies “lock down” their notebooks from third party software to remove the threat of malware. This could delay a meeting – or cause the system to be unusable to a visitor.

The second disadvantage is that these devices need to be installed and managed by IT staff . Typically, the visitor’s notebook used for the presentation must be logged on to the same network as the presentation receiver hub. Since meeting rooms represent the most exposure to external threats, these might be set up on different VLAN networks, which would require a more complicated setup and security protection from the IT department, including specific port usage. In addition, the bandwidth requirement to manage video and other rich content could require changing network priorities or settings. Wi-Fi network solutions are completely dependent upon the performance of the corporate network. 

TV-Based Wireless HDMI Transmitters / Receivers

The third type of wireless HDMI solution is designed for consumers to share video content from a source, such as a game console, to a television and eliminate the need for a HDMI cable. These systems have the advantage of being less expensive than the other solutions and easy to set up. Most systems use a single transmitter that attaches to the HDMI port on a computer, with power coming from the USB port or DC power source. The receiver is attached to the display and configured with a remote.

The major disadvantage of these systems is that they  do not provide any encryption or other security protection  to protect the information sent from the transmitter to be received by an unauthorized third party. While this is not a major concern in a home environment transmitting a movie to a projector, it is a  significant risk in a corporate or engineering environment  where company information could be stolen.

The second disadvantage is that only one transmitter is linked to the receiver , making it difficult for multiple presenters to share their screens in a collaborative manner. This solution is best suited for a consumer application to overcome cabling issues or applications where there is no data confidentiality concern (such as a small house of worship). There are a number of vendors that offer these solutions including Nyrius, IoGear, and StarTech.

Comparison Table

Here is a summary of popular models of different types of wireless presentation systems. Under this year's theme, "Energizing a Sustainable Industry," Hannover Messe 2024 drew over 130,000 visitors from 150 countries and featured 4,000 exhibitors. The event reinforced its role as a pivotal platform, bringing together the brightest minds in technology to shape a sustainable industrial future through crucial conversations and innovations.

During the exhibition, ZWSOFT unveiled its new mission "Empowering Sustainable Innovation with All-in-One CAD/CAE/CAM Solutions." Robust CAD Solutions for Designing Efficiently and Flexibly

At the exhibition, ZWSOFT unveiled a series of new versions of its 2D CAD solutions, including ZWCAD 2025 and ZWCAD MFG 2025. These new versions are set to maximize design efficiency, inspire creativity, and optimize workflows with impressive new features and enhancements in software functionalities and user interface.

Furthermore, ZWSOFT offered an exclusive preview of ZWCAD Cloud, an innovative platform yet to be released internationally. This presentation highlighted ZWSOFT's dedication to extending the capabilities of its 2D CAD solutions to the cloud. "With ZWCAD Cloud, we’re bringing a new dimension to CAD collaboration and accessibility," Dr. Cheng Huang, Head of Application Development at ZWSOFT, remarked during the presentation, emphasizing the strategic move to empower users with enhanced flexibility and real-time collaboration tools.

Integrated 3D CAD Solution to Boost Design Efficiency

At Hannover Messe 2024, ZWSOFT's integrated solution, ZW3D, attracted significant attention with its robust capabilities in CAD, CAE, and CAM. The team conducted a series of live presentations to showcase ZW3D's ability to improve design efficiency and handle complex design scenarios, featuring real-life case studies such as the design of large-scale marine diesel engines and injection molding machines.

ZWSOFT also took the stage to launch ZW3D 2025, which brings new features and enhancements designed to optimize the product development process further. "ZW3D 2025 is developed to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and facilitate full business process digitalization," introduced Jerry Feng, Head of ZW3D Product Management at ZWSOFT, underscoring the software's impact on efficient collaboration.

Advanced CAE Solutions to Reduce Time-to-Market

At the event, ZWSOFT also showcased its advanced CAE solutions, emphasizing the company's expertise in simulation and analysis. ZWSOFT offers advanced CAE solutions that address complex industrial challenges through sophisticated simulation capabilities, enhancing accuracy and reducing time-to-market for engineering projects.

ZWSOFT's R&D team delivered compelling presentations on the use cases of its CAE solution, ZWSim Structural. Additionally, Dr. Timothy Brauner from CHAM provided detailed insights into using PHOENICS for crucial studies in data center and electronics component cooling. These are the three alternatives Loveland officials hope could alleviate the city's traffic issues

LOVELAND, Ohio — Renderings and possible designs for traffic flow alternatives through Loveland were shown to community members at an open house meeting as city officials seek feedback on where residents' and travelers' priorities lie.

The meeting was held Tuesday evening at New Hope Baptist Church on Loveland Madeira Road.

During the meeting, the project team gave a presentation showcasing three alternatives intended to reduce traffic congestion at the bridge and improve travel time through downtown Loveland.

In 2022, Loveland city officials announced they hoped to work with the Ohio Department of Transportation to perform a traffic study. The city conducted a public survey for the traffic project over the summer of 2023; during that period, Loveland officials said they received more than 1,700 responses.

At that time, discussed options to relieve the bridge's congestion included addressing the need for cross-river connectivity and other regional network improvements that could reduce downtown congestion. The high traffic volumes are likely from commuters from Clermont and Warren counties, city officials said.

The West Loveland Avenue bridge is the only access point in the city that allows drivers to pass over the Little Miami River from Clermont County into Hamilton County; The closest other crossings are three miles south in Miamiville, Ohio, or four miles north in Foster, which sits in Warren County.

As part of the solution, city officials said they plan to add a traffic light to the bike and pedestrian crossings along the bike trail, along with finishing up a new parking lot.

City Manager Dave Kennedy said the city is also working with neighboring municipalities and ODOT on a traffic study that could lead to a second bridge spanning the Little Miami River. But where that bridge could go is still in question.

One spot could be on Fields Ertel Road, Kennedy said, but there's still plenty to decide.

"Will it attract more the Hamilton Township traffic, or will it attract more the Miami Township traffic and give them a better alternative than going through downtown?" said Kennedy.

The city said data received from ODOT in June showed that around 10,000 drivers travel West Loveland Avenue daily through the center of Loveland's downtown.

City officials said in 2022 that, since Loveland's city limits spans three different counties and neighbors multiple townships, there were unique challenges in finding which solutions to the traffic issues would be best for the region.

"Public involvement is a critical component of the project development process for proposed roadway improvements," said Kennedy. "Input from the public will be used to inform decision-making as we move forward."

Changes won't necessarily come right away, though; the city said the project is not currently funded and no timeframe has been established for when any construction would begin. Still, the city is hoping feedback on the alternative options will help identify which steps to take when carrying the project forward into further studies, like engineering and environmental demands.
