How can I use these worksheets in my classroom?

As an educator, there are several ways you can use these worksheets in your classroom:

1. Practice Material: After teaching a specific concept, such as single-digit addition or place value, you can use these worksheets as practice material to reinforce what students have been taught in class.

2. Assessments: You can use these worksheets to assess students' understanding of the topics you've taught. The variety of exercises, including word problems and numeric problems, can help gauge students' grasp of the material.

3. Homework Assignments: These worksheets can be assigned as homework to give students additional practice outside of the classroom. They can help fill in the gap from regular workbooks.

4. Centers or Stations: In a classroom that uses a centers or stations approach, these worksheets could be used at a math center where students rotate through different activities.

5. Early Finisher Activity: For students who finish their work early, these worksheets can provide an additional challenge and keep them engaged.

6. Group Work: Some worksheets could be used for pair or small group work, promoting collaborative problem-solving skills.

Remember, it's important to go through the worksheets with the students after they've completed them, or provide them with the answer keys, to ensure they understand any mistakes they might have made.

What math skills should I teach my first grade class?

The skills you teach your first graders will depend on your curriculum and their individual learning needs.

Generally, students should learn basic arithmetic operations within 20, understand numbers up to 120, tell time using both analog and digital clocks, interpret simple data, and understand basic geometric concepts including shape attributes and partitioning.

If you’re following the Common Core curriculum , you will want to cover the following standards:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking:

  • Using basic addition and subtraction within 20 to solve a variety of word problems, including those involving putting together or taking apart numbers, comparisons, and unknowns in all positions. This can be achieved using visual aids like objects and drawings, or equations with symbols for unknown numbers.
  • Solving word-based math problems involving the addition of three whole numbers whose total is less than or equal to 20.
  • Applying properties of operations as strategies for addition and subtraction.
  • Understanding subtraction as a problem of finding an unknown addend.
  • Relating the process of counting to the concepts of addition and subtraction.
  • Adding and subtracting numbers within 20 fluently, and applying strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing numbers, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums for ease of calculation.
  • Understanding the meaning of the equal sign and being able to determine if addition and subtraction equations are true or false.
  • Determining the unknown whole number in equations involving the addition or subtraction of three whole numbers.

Number and Operations in Base Ten:

  • Counting up to 120, starting from any number less than 120. This also involves reading and writing numerals within this range and representing a number of objects with a written numeral.
  • Understanding that a two-digit number is composed of tens and ones.
  • Comparing two two-digit numbers based on the meaning of the tens and ones digits. This involves using the symbols '>', '=', and '<' to record the results of comparisons.
  • Adding within 100, including adding a two-digit number to a one-digit number, and a two-digit number to a multiple of 10. This involves using concrete models or drawings, strategies based on place value, and properties of operations. Students are also expected to relate their strategies to a written method and explain their reasoning. It includes understanding that when adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens to tens and ones to ones, and occasionally it may be necessary to compose a ten.
  • Given a two-digit number, mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than the number without having to count, and being able to explain the reasoning behind it.
  • Subtracting multiples of 10 (ranging from 10 to 90) from other multiples of 10 in the same range. This is done using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and operations. Students should relate their strategy to a written method and explain their reasoning used.

Measurement & Data:

  • Telling and writing time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks.
  • Organizing, representing, and interpreting data with up to three categories. This involves asking and answering questions about the total number of data points, the number of data points in each category, and comparing the number of data points between different categories.
  • Distinguishing between defining attributes (like triangles being closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (such as color, orientation, or size). This includes building and drawing shapes with defining attributes.
  • Partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describing these shares using terms like halves, fourths, and quarters. Also, understanding that decomposing a shape into more equal shares results in smaller shares. This includes the ability to describe the whole shape as two or four of these shares.

First Grade Operations and Hints of Algebra Worksheets

  • Addition and Subtraction Word Problems (OA.1)- These worksheets focus on problems that are in word form and require a single sum or difference calculation to be performed to solve a situation based exercise.
  • Single Digit Subtraction (1.OA.A.1)- We introduce students to the basic concept of a mathematical difference.
  • Simple Subtraction Word Problems (1.OA.A.1)- We take the concept differences and apply it to word problems.
  • Fixed Integer Subtraction to 12 (Related to 1.OA.A.1)- Students work on removing just a single specific number for various integers that are 12 and under. A great section for working on your basic first grade math facts.
  • Addition Word Problems (Up to 20) - (OA.2)- These worksheets present problems that are found in sentence form and involve sums that total twenty or less.
  • Simple Addition Word Problem (1.OA.A.2)- This is where you should start with the entire word problem set.
  • Properties of Operations as Strategies (OA.3)- These worksheets look at the common math properties for students at this level. The mainstay here is the associative and commutative properties.
  • The Commutative Property (OA.3) - This also looks at the concept of multiplying, but great for advanced learners.
  • Subtraction and Unknown Addends (to 20) (OA.4)- This is really a primer to get students ready for single step algebra.
  • Missing Operations (Add and Subtract) (1.OA.B.4)- Tell us what these problems are missing. Hint: It is an operator.
  • Subtracting Numbers with Figures (Related to 1.OA.4)- We start to make the transition from integers to pictures.
  • Relate Counting to Addition and Subtraction (1.OA.B.5)- When you think about it, both of these operations are exactly like counting. Moving in one direction or another. We make this obvious for students.
  • Adding and Subtracting Within 20 (1.OA.C.6)- We keep the sums and different just under the value of twenty.
  • Math Fact Families (1.OA.C.6, 1.OA.B, 3.OA.4)- Fact families are groups of numbers that are almost systematic in the way they can be rearranged to add and subtract. This really helps you master basic operations quickly.
  • Subtraction Mad Minutes (1.OA.C.6)- These are left to right sum problems.
  • Rapid Fire Horizontal Subtraction Math Facts (1.OA.C.6)- Same as above, but we subtract now.
  • Rapid Fire Vertical Addition Math Facts (1.OA.C.6)- These are awesome to keep up your level of practice.
  • Subtraction Math Facts (1.OA.C.6)- This is the format that most students are accustom to, but in the real world things are a bit more fluid.
  • Number Bonds (1.OA.C.6)- A fun way to reinforce this skill for students and teachers alike.
  • Working With Equals Signs ( OA.7)- This is the foundation of working with equations.
  • Unknown Numbers in Sums and Differences (OA.8)- This helps students make a nice transition to word problems.

First Grade Numbers and Base Ten Worksheets

  • Counting (Up to 120) (1.NBT.1)- This really helps to make the transition to learning to form sums and differences.
  • One and Tens Place Values - 1.NBT.2)- Students begin to understand the meaning behind place holder and place value.
  • Compare Two-Digit Numbers (1.NBT.3)- This is where the greater than, less than, and equal values come.
  • Single Digit Addition (1.NBT.C.4)- Students start adding two single digit numbers together.
  • Addition of Numbers (Under 100) (1.NBT.4)- This section starts to piece together two and three pairs of numbers.
  • Ten More Or Ten Less - 1.NBT.5)- This is great for learning the powers of ten and eventually leap frogging over to exponents.
  • Visual Sum and Difference Word Problems (1.NBT.6)- This is where you have to balance multiple pieces: sentences, integers, and visuals that represent integers.

First Grade Measurement and Data Worksheets

  • Indirect Length Word Problems (1.MD.1)- You will use other references available to find set measures.
  • Length Word Problems In Units (1.MD.2)- We use separate values to work with metric and U.S. standards units of length.
  • Hours and Half Hours of Time (1.MD.3)- The minute hand is either always at the twelve or the six, in this case.

  • Partitioning Circles and Rectangles (G.3)- You will break apart these geometric figures based on written directions.

How To Use Our First Grade Math Worksheets

We have teachers take all types of different approaches with our work in their classes. Usually, the most difficult decision for teachers is not how to use this in teaching, but how should we order the topics in which we present them to students. Some teachers blindly follow the order in which the curriculum committee set up when they designed it. I find that more newer teachers do this because they were never really given any help with this when they were student teaching. Some staffs have a preset school district approach that is already setup for them. Many other teachers are left to decide by themselves. My best suggestion is to write a sample problem from each section on a 3 x 5 notecard. Some topics will have multiple looks at a topic but write a single fundamental problem. There are 30 topics here, so that would require you to make 30 notecards. When you are done arrange the problems in an order of logical sequence. This will give you your best logical approach to begin with. Also know that as you teach this, it might make more sense to reorder topics. Keep those notecards handy all year long.

We would highly suggest that you consider using our math posters to post in your classroom. Our math tests are highly recommended to assess how your students are doing with all the different content areas.

We welcome you and think that every student should consider using our work year-round. If you add this work into addition of your classroom experience you are sure to have great success. Some students are looking either to get ahead, stay on task, or catch up with their math skills. This is the perfect place for you. For Those That Are Behind - Begin with the lesson, follow it up with the guided lesson and complete the work. Check your answers with the guided lesson explanation. Then move on to the worksheets. If you feel you are doing well, take a shot at a quiz. If you score north of 85%, you are in good shape. If not, go back and crack away at the practice sheets to get you in better standing. Always refer back to the original lesson, when in doubt. For Those That Are Staying on Task - All of our sections will be helpful to help you push on with each of these topics. We would encourage you start with the guided lessons. If they make sense, push on to a few practice worksheets and follow it up with a quiz. If they do not make sense, drop back to the original lesson. For Those That Are Reviewing - If you are reviewing a topic, we suggest that you start with a math quiz on that topic. You will find those at the bottom of every topic page. See how you do. If you do well, try a second quiz to make sure you have it down. If you do poorly, start at the lesson and follow through the entire topic. If you do satisfactorily, review the guided lesson and follow it up with a few worksheets. Then go back and take another quiz.

What Do Students Learn In First Grade Math Class?

In the first grade students are all about expanding their skills, which they have learned in kindergarten and preschool. The first-grade curriculum pays major emphasis on building the foundation of mathematics. Some of the things they learn in first-grade maths class are: - Counting to 100 into small number groups such as 2s, 5s, and 10s. It helps their learning towards recognizing and writing numbers to 100. - They learn the concept of "greater than" or "equal to" as well the basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. - They learn the use of symbols while using basic math operations such as "+," "-," "=," ." - Adding numbers all the way up to 100 in their head. - Learning to do simple subtraction. - Working addition and subtraction using coins. - Learning to identify simple patterns. - Learning basic measurement units such as length, weight, height. - Understanding and doing simple fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4). Learning to tell time on an analog clock and learning different terms for telling time. One thing to keep in mind when taking in the concepts behind a math curriculum is that it follows a spiral curriculum. What that means is that year after year we spiral around and build on old knowledge. So in the first grade you are building on skills that you initially learned in kindergarten. When you reach second grade, you will build on the skills that you learned in first grade. This means that if we do not quite master something, we will see it again. This gives us the chance to get it right this time. But it also indicates that if you have bad habits and do not fix them, they will be a problem in the future for you.

1st grade homework math

Judson ISD now will let middle schoolers who fail reading or math advance to next grade

M ore than 1,000 middle school students failing math or reading in Judson Independent School District will be able to advance to the next grade level under a new policy approved by the board this month.

That still leaves hundreds expected to repeat a grade in Bexar County’s fourth-largest school system.

Trustees voted 5-2 to allow students to move up a grade if they receive a 70 or higher in three of the four core classes: English, math, science or social studies. Previously, middle schoolers who didn’t pass all four subjects would be held back unless they completed a credit recovery program.

ON EXPRESSNEWS.COM : San Antonio area STAAR scores in math are up. Reading? Not so much.

“Even the state has found that you don’t want to make a policy that says that if you haven’t perfected everything, that you can’t continue to move forward, because we kind of build the plane as we taxi down the runway,” Superintendent Milton Fields said during the April 18 meeting.

About half of the public school districts in Bexar County require middle school students to pass English and math to advance to the next grade, while the others require proficiency in only one of the two subjects.

Texas schools have struggled to rebound from pandemic-era learning losses and last year still fell short of 2019 scores on the state’s standardized test, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.

For years, students had to pass the fifth- and eighth-grade reading and math STAAR exams to proceed to the next grade level. The Legislature abolished that requirement in 2021, ordering school districts to shape their own retention policies as the pandemic erased years of educational gains nationwide.

CHILDREN AT RISK RANKINGS: See how your San Antonio-area school performed in 2023

Judson is the first area school district to modify its original policy, citing the high number of students unable to attain a 70 in either math or English.

“I feel like we’re lowering a standard instead of striving for higher standards,” said board member Laura Stanford, who voted against the superintendent’s recommendation along with trustee Monica Ryan.

Ryan echoed the sentiment, arguing that Judson ISD students will fall behind their peers if the district doesn’t set higher expectations. If students aren’t held accountable in middle school, they might not be able to pass the English and math prerequisites for graduating from high school, she said.

“Why would I want to vote for a policy that lowers the expectations for kids instead of raising them?” Ryan said in an interview. “Kids have always needed to do math and reading. It’s the core of what education is about and feeds everything else.”

The district has too many 15- and 16-year-olds who can’t pass their middle school courses, said Mary Duhart-Toppen, deputy superintendent of teaching and learning. If the policy wasn’t updated, Judson ISD would have to hold back 1,825 students in their current grades next year, she said.

With the changes, that number drops to 734 students — meaning there are nearly 1,100 middle schoolers currently failing math or reading.

Duhart-Toppen acknowledged the concern “about where kids are going to end up if we pass them and they showed they were struggling,” but she told trustees the district will provide increased intervention to affected students.

It wasn’t clear what that would entail. Ryan said most students who fail a required course have completed summer school to make up the credit — but this year, Judson ISD has canceled its middle school course recovery program without board approval or explanation.

The result is that even with the new policy, student retention will be far higher than the 2021-22 school year, when the district held back only 62 middle schoolers.

Ryan added an agenda item to the April 18 meeting to discuss the summer school program, but trustees didn’t get to it when the meeting went more than five hours.

Judson ISD did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A file attached to the online agenda says the district decided to eliminate the program after “all middle school campus principals reported an increase in the number of students who were failing core classes during the school year.”

“The policy would make fewer kids need summer school but for the huge number that still need it, it’s not there,” Ryan said. “None of this makes sense.”

Other districts

Northside ISD’s longstanding retention policy also bases grade promotion on students passing three of the four core academic areas but with a caveat that eighth-graders also must pass the reading and math sections of the STAAR exam to move on to high school.

Southwest, Edgewood, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, Somerset, Harlandale, Southside and Randolph Field ISDs also require students to pass only three of the subjects, according to local board policies posted online. North East, San Antonio, South San Antonio, East Central, Alamo Heights, Lackland and Medina Valley ISDs require students to pass all four.

The pandemic prompted Northside ISD to adjust its approach to early intervention and better catch students falling behind, said Deonna Dean, the district’s assistant superintendent for middle school instruction.

“We didn’t have a good system in place,” she said. “We were waiting for summer to try and recover things that were missed way back in the first marking period, and we know, in reality, kids need to fill those gaps as close as possible to when that concept was taught.”

The district does everything it can to avoid holding students back, including offering course protection and providing instruction materials for teachers to use for students who have missed key concepts, Dean said.

Research shows that holding students back in middle school can put them at a higher risk of dropping out once they reach high school . Dean said it affects students academically, socially and emotionally, “a very real thing when you watch your peers that you have been in band and on the football field with continue on and you’re stuck in the same place.”

GROWING PROBLEM: San Antonio schools try to combat social media’s leers and sneers — with mixed success

It’s especially hard for sixth-graders who are held back to watch their peers advance to grades where they are eligible to compete in athletics and participate in other extracurricular activities, said Driscoll Middle School Principal Lori Murach in North East ISD, where students must pass English and math.

“If we hold back in sixth grade, that’s one place where it’s kind of like, ‘OK, we really have to monitor them and keep encouraging them and watching their scores,’ ” she said. “Reading comprehension, inferencing, being able to write and read critically, and problem-solving in math is more solidified in middle school, setting the foundation for the high school level.”

Murach said she doesn’t understand why a district would stop requiring students to pass subjects in which proficiency affects virtually all other courses. Instead of pushing students forward with failing grades and “delaying the inevitable,” she said, schools with low achievement should review their coursework and teaching styles to identify what’s working — and more importantly, what’s not.

“Are we trying to work towards a solution now and say, ‘Wow, we’ve seen an increase in this issue since the pandemic, so we are buckling down and going to make a more solid foundation for these kids before we send them on?’ ” she asked. “Or are we just saying, ‘They can’t do it, we’re going to eliminate that requirement and just let them move on anyway?’ ”

On a recommendation by Superintendent Milton Fields, the Judson ISD board changed its middle school retention policy to require students to pass only three of four core classes.

Summer learning loss: What we know and what we’re learning

1st grade homework math

Concerns about students losing ground academically during summer break go back at least a century, with early evidence suggesting that summer contributed to large disparities in students’ outcomes. This narrative spurred expansion of a variety of summer programs and interventions aimed at stemming summer learning loss.

However, in the last five years, there has been a spirited debate about two long-standing questions about students’ summers: 1) the degree to which test scores actually drop during the summer and 2) the degree to which summer break contributes to educational inequities. A new layer to this conversation is the response to the learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. School leaders and policymakers have used the summer break as a potential time for academic recovery. Summer programs have emerged as one of the most popular recovery strategies offered by school districts, with an estimated $5.8 billion of ESSER funds expected to be spent on summer programs by September 2024.

With more focus on the impact of summer on students’ learning and the potential to extend the school year, it is essential for educators, policymakers, and families to have an up-to-date understanding of the impact of summer breaks on students’ learning patterns. In this post, we aim to highlight what is known about summer learning loss by quickly summarizing recent research and posing some questions that remain unanswered about the role of summers on students’ learning.

Students’ test scores flatten or drop during the summer

While our initial understanding of summer learning loss dates back to studies conducted in the 70s and 80s , a recent collection of studies in the last six years provides a fresh look at students’ learning across summers using four modern assessments ( ECLS-K direct cognitive tests , MAP® Growth™, Star, and i-Ready) with large national (though not typically nationally representative) samples. See “School’s out: The role of summers in understanding achievement disparities,” “When does inequality grow? School, summer, and achievement gaps,” “Evidence of ‘summer learning loss’ on the i-Ready diagnostic assessment,” “Findings on summer learning loss often fail to replicate, even in recent data,” and “Inequality in reading and math skills forms mainly before kindergarten: A replication, and partial correction, of ‘Are schools the great equalizer?’”

Figure 1 compares the test score patterns across four different studies. Three important patterns stand out:

  • On average, test scores flatten or drop during the summer , with larger drops typically in math than reading.
  • Studies using test scores from ECLS-K:2011 show that student learning slows down but does not drop over the summers after kindergarten and first grade. However, research using interim and diagnostic assessments ( MAP Growth , Star, and i-Ready ) has found far larger summer drops across a range of grade levels.
  • Given the sizable differences in the magnitude of test score drops across tests, it remains uncertain whether summer slide should be considered a trivial issue or a serious educational challenge.

Figure 1. Comparison of summer slide estimates across datasets

Two bar graphs compare summer slide estimates for math and reading in grades K–2, 3–5, and 6–8 using data from ECLS-K: 2010–2011, i-Ready, MAP Growth, and Star.

Note: All estimates are reported as the total average summer test score change in standard deviation (SD) units relative to the prior spring test score. Whenever possible, we report the estimate that adjusted scores for time in school prior/after testing in the fall and spring. Sources: Author calculations based on data reported in ECLS-K:20210-11 , MAP Growth , i-Ready , and Star .

Who is most likely to show summer learning loss.

While all three diagnostic assessments show some degree of summer slide in grades 3–8 on average, the research community lacks consensus about whether summers disproportionately impact certain students. Paul von Hippel and colleagues have pointed out that whether and how much summers contribute to educational inequalities (across students of different income levels, races, ethnicities, and genders) depends on the test used to study students’ learning patterns. Nonetheless, we can present a few key patterns from this line of research:

  • Learning rates are more variable during the summer than during the school year. See “School’s out: The role of summers in understanding achievement disparities,”   “When does inequality grow? School, summer, and achievement gaps,”  and  “Inequality in reading and math skills forms mainly before kindergarten: A replication, and partial correction, of ‘Are schools the great equalizer?’”
  • Gaps between students attending low- and high-poverty schools do not consistently widen during the summer. See “Is summer learning loss real, and does it widen test score gaps by family income?”  and  “Is summer learning loss real?”
  • Test score differences between Black and white students hold steady or narrow during the summer. See “Do test score gaps grow before, during, or between the school years? Measurement artifacts and what we know in spite of them”  and  “When does inequality grow? School, summer, and achievement gaps,” though results can be sensitive to the metric and test used. See also  “Black-white summer learning gaps: Interpreting the variability of estimates across representations” and “Findings on summer learning loss often fail to replicate, even in recent data.”
  • The field cannot really explain why differences in students’ summer learning occur. See “Rethinking summer slide: The more you gain, the more you lose”  and  “Inequality in reading and math skills forms mainly before kindergarten: A replication, and partial correction, of ‘Are schools the great equalizer?’”

Planning effective summer programming

It is clear across recent studies that summer is a particularly variable time for students. Summer break is also increasingly a time in which districts are offering a range of academic offerings.

During summer 2022, an estimated 90% of school districts offered summer programs with an academic focus. However, evidence on the effectiveness of academic summer programs during and after the COVID-19 pandemic is limited. One study of eight summer programs in summer 2022 found a small positive impact on math test scores (0.03 SD), but not on reading. The improvements in math were largely driven by elementary students compared to middle schoolers. However, the effectiveness of these programs remained consistent across student groups, including race/ethnicity, poverty, and English learner status.

It is crucial to recognize the challenges associated with scaling up summer programs. In the districts studied, only 13% of students participated in the summer programs , which only lasted for an average of three to four weeks. Prior research indicates that for summer programs to yield measurable academic benefits, they should run at least five weeks with at least three hours of instruction a day. Additionally, getting students to regularly attend summer programs remains a significant hurdle. To address this issue, districts should actively recruit families to participate and offer a mix of academic instruction and engaging extracurricular activities. By adopting these strategies, districts can maximize the effectiveness of their summer programs and better support student learning during the break.
