My Best Friend Essay 100 Words

I always thank God that he sent Rahul into my life as my best friend, and I also wish that everyone has a friend like Rahul. Rahul and I met on the first day of school after the summer vacation when we were studying in the 5th standard.

I also remember an incident when our class teacher asked him about his previous school and the place from where he came. He is a good speaker, and he gave an interesting answer to everyone in his introduction in class.

He is good at studies and also a good athlete. He loves running and singing too, and his handwriting is also very neat and clean. I feel happy to become his friend, and he also loves my company, and we spend most of our time together.

My Best Friend Essay 200 Words

I have had a lot of friends since childhood, but Raghav is one of the kindest and most trustworthy friends for me. I must say that Rohan has been my best friend since childhood. He is a very good person and a true friend because he has a good manner that he never lies to anyone, and hates people who lie to him. He is a kind boy and also a sincere student. We both live in the same building, and our apartments are also in front of each other.

My parents also met my friend in the school at the parents-teachers meeting, and they also like Raghav and his sincerity. We both have been in the same class from the 3rd standard until now. We are in the 10th standard now, and we both help each other in the preparation for Board exams, which will be held in the month of March.

He always invites me to his house to play video games with him. Every Sunday, we both enjoy playing video games with popcorn and juice together. Sometimes, our school teachers also wonder about our true friendship and the strong bond between us. He has a set of badminton rackets and a shuttle, and we also play together in the evening near our building. We both love each other’s company.

My Best Friend Essay 300 Words

Everyone has at least a single friend who is more than just a friend to them. Getting a friend is common, but getting a true friend is very rare and a bit special. It is like a big achievement for people to get a trustworthy and lifelong best friend. I also had a best friend in my life too since childhood. His name is Ganaraj, and his mother is Telugu. We are neighbors too and also classmates. We always sit together in school and also spend most of the time together.

He is a very talented person and always supports me in my studies. We both like mathematics, and also we love to solve maths numerical problems. I like to play games, and we both always play games together and participate in the sports that are held in school. Our favorite sport is Cricket, and we both are good all-rounders on our school cricket team. Our class teacher always suggests and supports us to play cricket even better and also helps in education to achieve success in life.

He is very valuable to me, and I always value his friendship as I value my parents. He is like my family, as a brother from another mother. Whenever I need his help and support, my best friend is there for me to hold me. We both live in the precious moment and create memories that will stay with me forever. Our friendship is a kind of beautiful relationship, and I hope any kind will never break these mistakes. Every Sunday, we go together to a playground near our locality, and we spend most of our time there. My parents also like Ganaraj to be my friend. Everyone is happy with our friendship and has a strong bond that never goes down in any situation.

My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.

How To Write a My Best Friend Essay

' data-src=

Definition: What Is a My Best Friend Essay?

Write about what you know is sage advice often given to fledgling writers. And what do many of our young students know more about than their trusty sidekick, who is a constant presence through thick and thin?

A My Best Friend Essay is precisely what it sounds like; an essay the student writes that is focused on their closest pal’s endearing attributes (and otherwise).

However, the My Best Friend Essay is more than just a chance for students to wax lyrical about their BFFs. It is an authentic opportunity for students to hone their composition skills and exercise their creative flair.

All this while talking about one of their best mate – not bad!

STRUCTURING a My Best Friend Essay

This is an essay. It says so right there in the title! Just how complex the structure of a student’s essay is will depend on essential factors such as age and ability. However, the 5-paragraph essay structure is a perfect framework for this type of composition.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the 5-paragraph essay is that it is easily modified to differentiate between lower or higher ability students by simply adjusting the number of paragraphs. The essay will still contain the same essential elements of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, regardless of how long it is.

The 5-paragraph (or hamburger) essay is a craft in itself and much too broad a topic to go into at length. Check out our complete guide here if you want more detail on this handy essay template.

Briefly though, in essence, the 5-paragraph essay comprises three parts:

  • The Introduction : The opening paragraph will orient the reader to the topic of the essay, in this case, by introducing the show’s star, the best friend .
  • The Body : In the traditional 5-paragraph essay, this makes up three of the five paragraphs. In this type of essay, the student will use these paragraphs to flesh out the main reasons they value their friend, or (at a more advanced level) they will tell a story about them that illustrates why they are the student’s best friend.
  • The Conclusion : In the conclusion, the student can sum up why their friend holds the hallowed title of ‘best’. Or, at a higher level, the student can use the final paragraph of their essay to look forward to the future of their relationship with their best friend.

My Best Friend Essay Story

While we are teaching a short essay on my best friend’, it can also be approached from another angle, i.e., as a nonfiction story.

While the clearcut essay format may be eminently suitable for younger students, you may wish to revisit this genre with older students, this time emphasising storytelling.

In this creative nonfiction approach, students can merge the essay format with storytelling elements such as character, setting, central conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Constructing their best friend composition in this manner allows students to work on structuring a nonfiction text. Simultaneously, it offers them a chance to develop their creative flair.

My Best Friend in 10 Lines

Another approach particularly well-suited to younger students is the my best friend essay 10 lines format.

This helps younger students get writing by giving them a clear target to aim for, which makes planning easy.

However, you can still introduce the three elements of the 5-paragraph essay here. As students list the points they want to make in their 10 lines, they can be encouraged to group these into introduction, body, and conclusion sections.

For example, a plan might look like this:

A ‘My Best Friend in 10 Lines’ Plan

Introduction

Line 1: My friend’s name.

Line 2: What she looks like.

Line 3: Where she is from/her family.

Line 4: What friendship means to me.

Line 5: How we met.

Line 6: The kindest thing she has ever done.

Line 7: The funniest thing she has ever done.

Line 8: My absolute favorite thing about her.

Line 9: Restate why she is my best friend.

Line 10: How I see our future together.

To complete their 10-line ode to their friend, the student simply builds proper sentences around each of these (or similar) ideas.

More on Planning a My Best Friend Composition

As we can see in the sample plan above, the planning process is relatively straightforward when the 5-paragraph essay structure serves as a framework. However, we may want to take things up a notch for students of a higher ability.

A good, old-fashioned brainstorming session is an excellent starting point for the student. They can list their favorite memories and their friend’s best features.

While younger students may inevitably write something of a hagiography (a biography of a saint!), older students may want to present a more realistic portrait of their ever-present amigo.

Likewise, if the student is undertaking their composition in a narrative nonfiction form, they’ll need to map out the narrative arc of their story at the planning stage.

As with any story, the conflict will serve as the engine of the narrative. However, this conflict does not have to take the form of a problem between the writer and the best friend. After all, this text is more likely to be something of a love letter than a letter of complaint. Instead, the conflict is more likely to take the form of a problem or a challenge faced by the writer and their pal together.

Whether or not the student’s text will take a full-blown story form, true-to-life anecdotes will bring life to the student’s writing. The planning process is the perfect time to dump these onto paper, even if they don’t all make it into the final draft.

How to Start a MY Best Friend Essay

As with most text types, fiction or nonfiction, the writer will want to grab the reader’s attention from the outset. An effective way of doing this is by using a hook.

How to Hook The Reader

The student writer has many methods available to grasp the reader’s attention. While some of these will only be suitable for more advanced students, most can be adapted with a bit of effort for our younger writers.

  • Start in the Middle of the Action

Technically known as, In Medias Res , this technique involves opening the story in the middle of a moment of dramatic tension with the exposition filled in later. This type of wizardry is probably best reserved for the more skilled student writer.

  • Make a Bold Promise at the Outset

The promise of a big payoff can undoubtedly catch a reader’s eye and draw them in, but the student-writer must follow through later in the text. For less experienced students, you may want to offer a writing prompt to help out here. For example,

My best friend Jack is truly one of a kind, but just how special he is wasn’t clear to me until the day a fire broke out in our school.

Students can quickly adapt such prompts by changing the event mentioned to their own circumstances.

  • Create a Sense of Intimacy

Another way to grasp the reader’s interest is to create a sense of intimacy right from the start. This can be achieved by addressing the reader directly in a conversational tone. Students should use informal language and approach writing their text as if they were speaking to a close friend – this is perfect for this writing style.

  • Open with an Anecdote

Another way to create interest (and a sense of intimacy) is to open up with an interesting anecdote about the friend. Students can select an interesting or humorous story to use as a carrot to entice the reader in. The student could substitute an exciting or amusing fact in shorter pieces for a full-blown anecdote.

  • Begin with a Quotation

Quotes are a great way to garner attention. There are many online repositories of inspirational quotes on every topic under the sun where students can find a golden nugget of friendship-based wisdom to open their masterpieces. They must simply type in keywords such as ‘famous’, ‘quotes’, and ‘friendship’ to uncover a smorgasbord of well-articulated wisdom for students to choose from. However, students should ensure the sentiment expressed in their selected quote ties into the type of friendship described in their work.

Working the Body

As we stated earlier in this article, the 5-paragraph essay structure, or the narrative writing arc, lays out a suitable template for the student-writer to work their way through the body of their text. However, it’s worth pointing out five areas where a little attention can significantly impact.

  • Get Specific

The devil’s in the details. The more specific the student is in their writing, the more effectively they will communicate with the reader.

Encourage students to be as precise as possible in their descriptions. A thesaurus is an excellent tool to help students find just the right word for the job.

  • Vary Sentence Length

Often, emergent writers rely on the same couple of simple sentence structures in their writing. This soon makes the writing monotonous for the reader; if they continue to read, it is only with effort that they will finish the student’s work.

Variety is not only the spice of life but also the spice of good writing. Encourage students to vary their sentence structures and alternate between long and short sentences to diversify the rhythm of their writing and evoke interest on the reader’s part.

  • Use Dialogue

Weaving dialogue into a my best friend essay text is a great way to bring colour and variety to a student’s writing. It also allows the student to practice punctuating dialogue – an essential skill!

Students will need to learn to listen carefully if they are to be able to write how people actually speak. Encouraging them to read their dialogue aloud is an effective way to check if it rings true.

  • Incorporate Literary Devices

Though this is undoubtedly a nonfiction text, it has firm roots in creative writing too. Students should incorporate some of the literary techniques and devices that we’d more commonly associate with poetry and fiction writing to add colour, creativity, and imagination to their writing.

For example, for younger students, physical descriptions of their BFF provide the perfect opportunity to introduce similes and hyperbole. Don’t be afraid to get comical here; writing should be fun, after all.

Does their friend have a big nose? How big? As big as an elephant’s trunk, perhaps?

Just make sure students avoid being too mean or poking fun at areas too sensitive for their friends.

It is easy to differentiate different abilities by challenging stronger students to use more complex literary devices in their work. Zoomorphism anyone?

  • Evoke the Five Senses

Emergent writers often display a bias towards only using the sense of sight in their descriptions. To bring their writing up a notch, encourage your students to employ all five senses in their writing.

By evoking the sense of hearing, smell, taste, and touch in their work, students will help their writing to come alive in the reader’s imagination.

WRAPPING THINGS Up

In a regular 5-paragraph essay, the concluding paragraph is usually the time to summarize the main arguments and drive home the thesis statement one more time. Obviously, things are a little bit different in a “my best friend essay.”

Of course, students can take the opportunity to revisit and restate the main reasons why their best friend holds the best-friend-championship belt. Still, there is a more artistic way to use their composition’s final paragraph.

Ask students to think about their friendship and where they see it in five, ten, twenty, or even forty years.

Undoubtedly, for younger students, in particular, this may be a bit of a challenge, but it can be a fun thought experiment too. Students can pose themselves questions to help, such as:

  • Will we be neighbours?
  • Will we work together?
  • Will our children go to school together? Etc.

Taking a tentative step into the possibilities of the future can make for an impactful ending.

Best friends are those with whom we have formed a deep and unique bond. What makes them remarkably special is that we chose them unlike with family. For this, some even consider their best friends to be extensions of themselves.

We all trust our best friends wholeheartedly; that’s why they are the best people to confide in. And many of the lasting memories in our lives are those that we create with them. These memories could be filled with waves of boisterous laughter or even the most piercing pain when your friendship is tested.

Read on and find essay examples and prompts that could motivate you to write about best friends.

“Hanging out with a set of lifelong best friends can be annoying, because the years of inside jokes and references often make their communication unintelligible to outsiders. But this sort of shared language is part of what makes friendships last.”

The above essay delves into the evolution of friendship throughout the different stages of our lives, from childhood and teen years to family life and retirement. While we have all deferred a meetup with friends several times to attend to family and work, many people still treat their friendship as stable and continuous, even in long lapses in communication.

You might also find these essays about camping trips helpful.

“My best friend is a magical, rooftop sunrise. My best friend is the ocean. My best friend is a hike in the mountains. My best friend is a peaceful afternoon. My best friend is a really good book. My best friend is laughter. My best friend is seeing the world. My best friend is time with people I love.”

This essay takes on a broader definition of a “best friend,” deriving from Marilyn Monroe’s famous quote: “Diamond are a girl’s best friend.” From having excessive material wants for every occasion, the author realizes that the greatest “friends” in life are not material things but the simple joys that nature and love can bring.

“It was supposed to go the way things do in the movies. Nora would tell her best friend that she loved him, he would feel the same way and then they would kiss – preferably in the rain. So when the 30-year-old arts manager declared her love for her best friend when they were still teenagers, she expected a happy ending.”

The essay by Srirn Kale treats its readers to compelling stories of best friends ending up in marriage and those parting ways because of unrequited love. But, before taking the bold step of declaring your love for your best friend, a relationship guru advises lovers first to read the signs that signal any reciprocity of these deep feelings.

“Losing a best friend may be one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences you have in your lifetime. If you aren’t sure how to process that your best friend died, know that there are many healthy options when it comes to coping with this type of loss.”

Coping with losing a best friend could lead to depression or even suicidal thoughts, especially if your best friend means the world to you. Some coping tips include journaling your grieving process to understand your emotions and confusion better and doing things that can relive your best friend’s memories.

“If you are happy with the friends you currently have, there’s no need to try making a best friend for the sake of it. You might have friends but no best friend; that’s perfectly OK. It’s not necessary to have a BFF.”

Not everyone has a best friend. Some would find this fact hard to believe, but a YouGov survey has shown that 1 in 5 of the US population claims to have no close friends. The essay, therefore, explores the reasons for this friendlessness and gives tips on building a bond with potential best friends, starting with your existing circle of acquaintances.

Essays About Best Friends: Describe your best friend

Begin this essay by describing what your best friend looks like and what traits you like most about them. Then, given these qualities, would you consider your best friend a role model? Your essay can also answer how similar you and your best friend are and what things you both agree on. But if you have more differences than similarities, write how you deal with them or put them aside.

In this essay, describe your favorite ways to hang out with your best friend. What do you like doing together? Describe what a day spent with your best friend looks like and which part you like most about your dates. If your conversations draw your mutual admiration for each other, then talk about what topics make you talk for hours on end and their perspectives on things that you find fascinating.

Do different time zones make friends grow apart? Or does distance make the heart grow fonder? First, interview two to three people whose best friends moved to a different country or city. Next, learn how frequently they communicate with each other. Finally, compile these stories and make a smooth transition to each one such that the structure highlights the challenges of long-distance friendships and how each set of friends gets by.

Discarding best friends is a hard decision. But it is also brave if you feel they are dragging you down. For this prompt, you can pose a list of questions readers can ask themselves to grasp the situation better. For example, is your friend doing you more harm than good? Have you set boundaries that they find hard to respect? Then, explain how reflecting on each question can help one determine when it is time to cut some ties loose.

Falling in love with your best friend can only end in two scenarios: a happy ever after or an end of a beautiful relationship. Expanding on our essay prompt above, list down more tips to know when it is best to confront your best friend about your feelings or work hard to quash your emotions for the continuity of the relationship.

Pick out best friends from novels that formed friendships that touched you the most. They could be Harry, Ron, Hermoine of Harry Potter, Frodo, Sam of the Lord Of The Rings, or even Sherlock and Watson From The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes. First, describe what it is in their friendship that you find most riveting. Then, narrate events that served as the biggest tests to their friendships and how they conquered these challenges.

What about dogs that some people find more lovable than others? Answer this in your essay by outlining the traits that make a dog the ideal best friend. For one, their loyalty makes us confident that they will not betray us. If you have a dog, write about the qualities that make your dog a reliable and fun companion. Then, narrate events when your dog proved to be your best friend.

My Best Friend Essay: 500 Words

Introduction.

‘A man is known by the company he keeps’, Says a proverb. Hence one needs to be very careful in selecting friends. As Shakespeare has pointed out in his play ‘As You Like It’, ‘Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly’. Fair-weather friends are plenty; true and reliable friends are few and far between.

My Best Friend

I have many friends in my school , but most of them are only so-called friends. They are not dependable. Out of them, only Arvind is my true and sincere friend. He is my best friend. I am, indeed, proud of his friendship.

Arvind is the only son of a district court judge. Even then he is very humble and modest. His financial position is sound and enviable. Yet prosperity has not turned him proud and rude. He is not puffed with pride.

His Qualities

Arvind has all the fine qualities of head and heart. He is tall, healthy, and handsome. He is affectionate, kind, sociable, and extremely helpful. Introduction (Essay on My best friend)

A man may be a social being, and by instinct, seeks companionship of others. In our journey through life, we meet countless people, but with everyone, we don’t make friends.

This is often because the sine qua non of friendship is an affinity of the mind, tastes, and temperament. The few ins who we discover the affinity, we make friends with and that they carve out a permanent place in our hearts.

Friends are an integral part of your life, be the varsity years, school life , colleagues at the office, or friends near your house. Everyone needs friends to share their feelings, spend some blast, and relax in life.

I’m fortunate to possess such a friend in my life on which I can just rely on love or money. Whether it’s sharing my feelings, my good and bad times, and sometimes even my clothes, I just enjoy everything with him. His name is Rishi.

First meeting with my best friend at school

When I was in class 2, Rishi joined our college and our class. His parents have just migrated to our city, and there he was, the primary time during a new city, new school, new class, and new people around it everywhere.

Fortunately, my teacher made him sit with me within the class. He was a touch shy initially, but by the top of the day, we both felt comfortable with one another.

Subsequently, once we met one another a day, we realised that we had quite many similarities, and this allowed us to gel with one another quickly. Since then, there has been no looking back.

Our friendship

Our friendship slowly became the ask of the category, and gradually we became best friends. Even our teachers came to understand about it and. But, because of all, nobody ever tried to make the distance between us as we complemented one another so perfectly that even our teachers and fogeys felt happy about it.

We want to help one another with class notes also as homework if one among us couldn’t attend the varsity thanks to any reason. We had this healthy competition in us on who would stand first within the class.

Our common interests

Apart from studies, we both a standard interest in Ping pong. We both joined an academy and want to choose practice together within the evenings. The sole difference in our habits, perhaps, was the while I used to be right-handed, he was a left-handed person.

But this was also a blessing in disguise for us as thanks to this very reason, we made an honest team and were even selected in our college team to play as a doubles team. We both won many competitions together and brought accolades to the varsity. This made our parents also as school teachers very pleased with us.

Unique career paths

After our schooling, we got separated, as we both chose different career paths . While I became an engineer, Rishi visited a particular city to become a scientist.

But, as life would have it, after some years, we both landed within the same city and came in touch with one another again. My friend has been the most crucial strength on behalf of me in my life.

During the weekend, we visited a brief cookery course also, and that we sometimes get a kick out of the prospect to cooperate within the kitchen and make some creative dishes.

Sometimes these dishes end up well; however, there are times once we don’t hit the nail on the top as we’d not have pursued the formula accurately. Our wives are thoughtful and don’t admonish us much once we ruin a dish.

My friend and that I appreciate watching films together amid occasions or excursions. We like watching comedies. Horror films don’t excite us and that we attempt to stand back from them.

My friend-My strength

In my times of need, my ally has been a pillar of strength on behalf of me. Not only did he look out to find out that I resolve my issues, but also ensured that my family isn’t affected by many thanks to the turmoil in my business life.

He has always encouraged me to face problems as they’re and to not duck under during adverse situations. I’m glad that I even have such a friend in my life on which I can believe blindly.

Why a Friend is so important? (His or her friendship importance in life)

True friendship is the most prized thing within the world. Although, it may be, that one doesn’t have a friend whom one can call as a friend.

But, if you’re ready to find someone sort of partner to you, it’s perhaps the best joy within the world. Anyone else can ‘t do the mutual affection and honesty which may be shown by your friend within the world. An associate is a precious gem in one’s life.

Friendship may be a great blessing in anybody’s life. An individual gets familiar with distinct people during their life journey. Among these, we discover two who think on our wavelength with similar taste and nature. We become more attached to those sorts of people and spend longer with them.

Gradually some kind of relationship develops, which seems to go away from long-lasting impressions in one’s life. It is a sign of a healthy relationship, and therefore the friendship starts from here. And for many folks, friends are more or less family. You and your friends will have many things in common.

You spent most of your day together with your friends. You share anything and everything with your friends. In short, the foremost memorable moments in everybody’s lives will be those spent with the simplest friends. Though miles apart, we either call or send messages on a day today.

Wherever we go, memory connects us and arranges a meet once every three months. We chat about the events in our lives cherish our mischievous moments together, reminisce about our good old days, capture every single moment in photographs, and separate again.

A friend is anyone with whom a bond exists, and mutual understanding forms a relationship. An individual could have many friends counting on the social character and, therefore, the simple being relatable with others.

At different stages of life, we’d like friends who are an equivalent level as us to suit in, but to some people, that’s not an option because they believe functioning independently, which remains okay.

Psychologists recommend that folks should co-exist together so they will help one another during times of need. There’s also an indisputable fact that coping mechanisms to worry are happier when friends are involved.

A lover might be anybody, but an ally is typically that one person you value the foremost of all of your friends. A best friend is like a family. I hope you liked this essay on my best friend.

Introduction:

Friendship is considered as one of the treasures that anyone can possess. God has given us the liberty to choose friends because they are for our lifetime. It is quite normal for our parents and siblings to love us because they are our own blood but a friend is someone who is initially a stranger and then takes his/her place above all the other relations. Friendship is nothing but pure love without any expectations.

Role of a Friend:

True friends share and support each other even during the toughest of times. A true friend is one who feels happy for our success, who feel sad for our failures, fight with us for silly things and hugs us the next second, gets angry on us when we do any mistakes. Friendship is all about having true friends who can understand us without the need for us to speak.

Conclusion:

Friendship is a divine relationship, which is defined by neither blood nor any other similarity. Friends are those you can choose for yourself in spite of the difference you both have from each other. A good friend in need will do wonders in your life, whenever you are in need of self-realization, upbringing your confidence and more.

Friendship serves you best not only in your happiest moments but also when you feel low in emotions. A life without a good friend is not at all complete and an emptiness will be felt all the time you think of sharing your emotion that can’t be told to anyone else.

Honesty and Patience in Friendship:

To maintain and keep going with a good deep friendship, honesty is the most important factor. You should choose a person who can be cent percent honest with you in all perspective like emotions, decision making, etc. Trustworthy friendship will help you to take better decisions and choose a better path for your future well-being.

Tolerance and patience with each other are another important characteristics of long-lasting friendship. Accepting the differences, friends should be able to be with each other in all situations. As a friend, the person should lead the other to success by being a motivation and criticize the person if they choose the wrong path.

Friendship is the true confluence of souls with like minded attitude that aids in seamless conversation and the best of times. It is believed that a person who doesn’t have any friend lives one of the toughest lives.

The Desire to Belong:

Each one of us have been so programmed that we need a companion even if it’s not romantic, someone just to tag along. There are several definitions of friendship and it is upon you as to how you believe your relation to be. Friendship can happen when you are simply sharing a bowl of food with a person day after day. It can be expressed in the way you silently care for someone even when they may not be aware of your existence.

The Little Moments that Matter:

It is giving up the little things you love dearly for the sake of someone you cherish a great deal. Friendship often refers to the little moments of senseless laugh you two share when the rest of the world starts to look bleak. It is to know what your friend needs and being there for them even when the rest of the world has turned their back towards them.

Friendship is the kind of relation which sometimes even exceeds the realms of love because it is all about giving without even once bothering to sense what you shall get back. Every time spent is special because when you are with friends, you don’t feel the blues!

The Bottom-Line:

Of course the definition of friendship is going to vary a great deal from one person to another. According to Aristotle’s Nichomachean ethics, there are three types of friendships. The friendships are based on three factors i.e. utility, pleasure and goodness. The first type of friendship is based on utility and has been described as a friendship whereby both parties gain from each other.

This type of friendship is dependent on the benefits and that is what keeps the friendship going. This type of friendships do not last long because it dissolves as soon as the benefits are outsourced or when other sources are found outside the friendship. The friendship was invented for trade purposes because when two people with opposite things that depend on each other re put together, trade is maximized.

The second type of friendship is based on pleasure. This is described as friendship in which two individuals are drawn to each other based on desires of pleasure and is characterized by passionate feelings and feelings of belonging. This type of friendship can ether last long or is short-lived depending on the presence of the attraction between the two parties.

The third type of friendship is based on goodness. In this friendship, the goodness of people draw them to each other and they usually have the same virtues. The friendship involves loving each other and expecting goodness. It takes long to develop this kind of friendship but it usually lasts longest and is actually the best kind of friendship to be in. the importance of such a friendship is the social support and love.

The different types of friendships are important because they provide benefits and social support. Friendships provide a feeling of belonging and dependence. The durability of friendships is dependent on the basis of its formation and the intention during the formation. A friendship is a serious relationship of devotion between two or more people where people involved have a true and sincere feeling of affection, care and love towards each other devoid of any misunderstanding and without demands.

Primarily friendship happens between people that have the same sentiments, feelings and tastes. It is believed that there is no limit or criteria for friendship. Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Introduction of my best friend essay.

Not everyone is blessed enough to have a best friend in life . The journey of life is filled with many people, but only a few leave an impression on us. And my best friend is the only one who leaves a deep impression on my life. For the longest time, we’ve been part of each other’s lives, and our friendship continues to grow.

Revealing Some Facts

Now, I’m revealing the most interesting fact about my best friend. The truth is my best friend is not only my friend but also my real brother. Yes, you read it right, my twin brother is my best friend. From our birth to this age, we’re always been together. Our mother gives us birth with a difference of 2 minutes. So according to this, my best friend is older than me.

Bond With My Best Friend

One of the greatest blessings of my life was growing up with a twin brother. It’s not only that I’ve someone who exactly looks like me, but also my best friend. My twin brother and I have a bond of unconditional love. From the day we’re born, our understanding is very good for each other.

Since my twin brother is my best friend, we’re together by birth. Our bond has been so real and strong since childhood. We always did things together, from sleeping too recently in college. We have the same interests and vision regarding anything.

Our Interest In Sports

As we’ve common interests regarding anything. But in sports we don’t have common interests, I like cricket, and he likes football. So the only time we’re not together is when we’re practising on the grounds. My best friend goes to the football academy and I go to the cricket academy.

Although, I’ve no interest in football when my best friend plays the match. I go to watch his match and support him as an audience. Likewise, my best friend comes to support my cricket match. But skillswise, he’s a great football player. And he’s very famous in the town for his next-level football skills.

Our Purpose In Life

As everyone has a purpose in life regarding his/her career. Our purpose and plan of life are to become doctors and want to serve humanity and our country. Because we want to help the people who live in privileged areas of our country.

The reason to help these people is, in today’s modern world where we’ve many modern treatments for diseases. But in backward areas of our country, people are dying of many minor diseases, because there are very few doctors to treat them. We think this is the best way to serve humanity and our country as well.

Conclusion of My Best Friend Essay

In conclusion, I want to say that I’m too lucky to experience the joy of a twin brother as a best friend. Having a best friend is a blessing, but having a twin brother as a best friend is the greatest blessing. There is nothing more special than the relationship I have with my twin brother.

Long Essay on My Best Friend – 1000+ Words for Competitive Exams Students With Headings

Long Essay on My Best Friend

Friendship is a relationship in this relationship two persons share common interests and experiences in life. This relationship is purely based on trust, loyalty, and mutual understanding. It’s not necessary to have this relationship in childhood only.

Friendship can be formed at any stage of life and to make this relationship long-lasting, efforts require from both sides. Efforts in terms of sacrifice, care, blind trust, and many more. A person has many friends in his life like his childhood friend, school friends, college friends, and so on.

But a best friend is the only friend in his life, who stays with him in all stages of his life. A best friend is the one you call anytime and share your feelings with to feel better. A best friend is like a leader, mentor, and teacher. Friendship is a relationship of mutual understanding.

My Mother is My Best Friend

Many people have best friends in the face of their wives, friends, brothers, etc. But fewer people have a best friend in their mother. My mother is my best friend and the greatest blessing of my life. She is the only one who knows best about me.

I can also say that my mother knows more about me, even myself. She is always with me in all my ups and downs and motivates me to achieve my goals. Although we’re five siblings, I’m the elder one, and very close to my mother’s heart.

Our Understanding and Bonding

Undoubtedly, I can say that my mother is my best friend and role model in my life. She’s always standing behind me like a rock and supports me in all my thicks and thins. My mother is the supreme person in my life, every other relation of my life comes after my mother.

In other words my best friend, my first love, my support system, and peace of mind. In short, I can’t write in words how much I love my mother. From the day I was born, my mother cared for me, she raised me from an infant to adulthood. I can’t thank her for her deeds.

Hardworking and Dedication of My Best Friend

My mother is a very hardworking and kind lady. She worked hard to raise her children, and teach them to the best of her knowledge. She sacrificed almost everything for me, like her body and time to bring me. As a best friend, she shares all of her thoughts with me.

As a best friend, I share all my feelings and secrets with her. She listens to me with all of her attention and guides me with the best based on her experience. She is like an all-in-one for me, from a mother to a leader. She has done everything for me, and still, she is doing it for me.

My Best Friend’s Role in My Life

My best friend is multi-talented, as she has many qualities. She is the one who encourages me to take a stand for myself. Because if you can’t even stand for yourself, you can’t take it for anyone. Her encouragement gives me so much power that now I’m able to fight against bullies.

She taught me to love everyone, not only humans but also animals. I remember when we were passing through a road and a cat was hitten by a car. My best friend said to me that, we’ve to help this injured cat. So we rescued her and took her to an animal hospital for her treatment.

My Career Path

My best friend also helps me in choosing my career path. When I share my feelings about the career of my life, she listens to me carefully and suggests multiple career paths. Her suggestions are purely based on her experiences and knowledge.

So we mutually decided that I will become a soldier to serve my homeland. The reason to become a soldier is to protect our country from our enemies. She is also very brave, as she knows borders are very dangerous and ready to send me to the borders of the country.

Our Same Interests

Although my best friend and I have a major age difference, but we’ve many similar interests. Like we both love to watch horror movies, especially at night. Usually, our weekends are spent watching movies late at night. I can’t even feel that I’ve another best friend.

Many things we’re doing together, but I never cross my line in terms of respect. We always give personal space to each other and respect each other’s privacy. Thus, we’re best friends with mutual understanding.

My Companion in Hard Times

As I tell you, my mother is my best friend. She’s always there to correct me and make sure to save me from any kind of trouble. She’s like a saviour in every hard time of my life. I remember when I failed class 5 and I came home with a sad face. So my mother motivates me and strengthens me in those bad times.

She also taught me how to respect a woman and comfort her with my presence. It’s not wrong if I say, my mother is not only my best friend, but a mentor, companion, leader, and so on. She always has an eye on my activities to make sure that I don’t do anything wrong.

No doubt, the mother is a great blessing in our lives. But when she becomes your best friend is an enormous blessing in one’s life. I’m so impressed with her qualities like her kindness, loyalty, and so on. I can also say that my mother is the best mom in the world.

Not only the best mom but a best friend, a leader, a lover, a protector, in short all-in-one. She works for me 27/7, without rest, and often we don’t even realise this. I also want to say to my readers, please love your mother and make her your best friend too. She deserves everything because she gives her whole life to you.

How to Introduce a Friend [+ Examples]

essay introduction best friend

Why does “introducing my friends” matter in the grand scheme of things?

Although society may tell us to simply make a few friends and hold onto them for life, this is not usually how our social lives play out.

Everyone needs to be open to forging new connections.

We constantly change, and as we develop different hobbies, ambitions, values, and life experiences, we need people to share those new parts of our lives.  [Read about Shared Experience Roots ]

PODCAST EPISODE! Want to learn more about shared experience roots? Listen to my episode on the three kinds of roots here.

Though it would be amazing if our closest friends could grow with us in every way as we mature, that’s just not possible. We are too complex! There are too many ways we are changing! As we all head down different life paths, we don’t have to go through life alone.

Many self-help books will tell you, “it’s lonely at the top” or “we have to get used to being on our own,” but let’s stop perpetuating that nonsense.

There are people who share our new interests, ambitions, and life experiences, and we just have to be open to finding them.

Why is this important?

Feel content with your social circle? We can be satisfied with the people in our lives AND stay open to new connections.

Feel lonely? Know that there are people out there who share your interests, and you can make those connections over time.

PODCAST EPISODE! Take control of your social wellness. Listen here.

What about the joy of being able to connect two people?

Our social circle is like a vast web. We never know what connections might create lifelong friendships, pickleball partners, new book club members, or even someone’s best friend for the latter years of their life.

There is a certain satisfaction to knowing our friends well enough (an emotional intimacy root! ) to set them up for a conversation that lights them up, not a conversation full of pleasantries.

So today, Let’s talk about how to introduce friends.

An introduction can be a fast track to a new connection.

How many times have you introduced friends like this?

“J, I want to introduce a friend. Meet A. A and I went to college together.”

By the end of this article, you’ll know how to introduce your friend in a creative way instead of the boring first introduction. An introduction like this:

“J, I want you to meet A. “J introduced me to my spouse back in college. A and I met over a late-night craving for tacos freshman year. I am not sure how you’ve never met! We all went to the same college. A and I haven’t talked in a few years, but we recently connected again. She’s about to depart on a month-long adventure to Europe. You both might have something to talk about since I know J went to Italy last year.”

Now, as you walk away, they have a variety of topics to choose from:

  • Traveling to Italy
  • Their shared experience of going to the same college
  • Where else they both have gone in Europe
  • Maybe even a mutual love of tacos.

Can we all agree that the second introduction has set our friends up for a more enjoyable conversation?

Let’s dive into how to introduce someone.

How to Introduce Friends

How do you introduce your friends? Have you ever thought much about this very mundane, everyday conversation? Sometimes the simplest parts of our life add up to make the most significant overall impact, and I’d venture to say that making introductions is one of those small acts that add up over time.

Consider the purpose of this friendship introduction

There could be various motives for introducing two friends:

  • They are both important to you. You want them to know that.
  • They share similar interests or experiences.
  • Getting to know each other could be mutually beneficial to them both.
  • There is a professional connection.
  • One friend has experiences with something the other friend is interested in.
  • They will be interacting with each other in some way.

Every introduction is an opportunity to showcase why two people getting to know each other would be enjoyable for both parties.

Quite often, the default is to introduce someone using their job title.

Can we all agree to stop doing that?

Sure, if you are in a professional setting, go ahead, but even in a professional setting, what if you made an introduction based on their best skill, most recent project, department, and “why” for their career?

These other descriptors remove hierarchy and set the two people up for a neutral conversation.

Personally, I believe that using job titles is a dull way to connect people. It doesn’t give justice to our friends as individuals – their hobbies, their dreams, and their backgrounds.

Yes, we spend many hours of our lives working… but that doesn’t define us. Let’s focus on making better introductions, shall we?

Instead of defaulting to the same old ways you always make introductions, pause for a moment.

Ask yourself, “Why am I introducing these two people?”

Taking the time to reflect will enable you to execute an intentional introduction.

If there isn’t a clear purpose, the purpose might just be “to avoid the uncomfortable feelings of searching for common ground.” You know these two people! Help them find common ground and set them on the path towards a conversation that will light them both up.

If possible, start by give your friends a heads-up.

There is a party tomorrow, and you already have two friends in mind that you’d like to introduce to one another. I love to see it!

It’s a great idea to give them a heads-up before, especially if either of your friends are on the more reserved side. It could be as simple as saying something like, “Hey J, I have this one friend I’d love to introduce you to at the party. Her name is A. I’ve wanted to introduce you two for a while. I’m sure you’d love to swap stories about your favorite travel spots.”

Are you hosting the party?

First of all, read my 6 Roles of Hosting Guide because making introductions falls in the “Day-of Host role,” which happens to be one of the most important roles of any gathering.

Now, any guest can make introductions, but if you are the day-of host, consider sitting down with the guest list a day or two before the gathering and creating a mental list of who might enjoy meeting who and attempting to facilitate those connections at the party. Planning the most effective ways to introduce friends is the main role of the day-of host.

Bringing a friend that doesn’t know anyone else to a party?

Brainstorm other guests you might know at this party. What similarities do they share with your friend? How might you make some impactful introductions? Spend a few minutes thinking about how you will introduce someone that matters to you.

Get to the point.

It’s time to make the introduction. The best way to introduce two people? Keep the introduction straightforward. It should be evident why you thought these two friends would like to meet.

  • Don’t include superfluous information.
  • Don’t talk about yourself if it doesn’t add value to the introduction.
  • Keep things positive. No embarrassing stories or inside jokes.

When in doubt, ask yourself, “Where do my friends take the conversation from here?”

Use the initial sentences to declare why you thought they would want to get to know each other.

Some examples:

  • “R meet S. I have wanted to connect the two of you for a while – You both tell me all your rock climbing stories! I know R just went on a climbing trip to Austria recently.”
  • “J meet A. Your little ones were born only a month apart. It’s been so fun to watch you both become parents. A, I know you just joined a PEPs group. That’s something J considered. How do you like it?”

Lead your friends on a clear path toward a shared interest or experience.

Know when to exit the conversation.

It takes a certain amount of emotional savvy to recognize when it’s time to stay and when it’s time to leave a conversation.

If this is something you want to learn more about, check out this article by Social Self on “How to Introduce Friends to Each Other.”

Let’s say you’ve made the introduction. A few things might happen.

  • They hit it off! You also have a little one. You stick around, and all have a great conversation about your shared experience of being new parents.
  • They have hit it off! They are talking about their mutual interests, life experiences, or connections. Let’s say they dove into talking about rock climbing…  but you don’t love rock climbing. In fact, you know very little about the sport. If you stay in the conversation, they continually backtrack to explain basic terms or references. If you connected them so they could nerd out on rock climbing, this might be a great time to excuse yourself.
  • They have trouble finding common ground. You might suggest a few additional connection points or leading questions to help them find a conversation that might be interesting. “J, when you were traveling, didn’t you tell me about this hidden gem you found in Berlin? A is heading there next month.”  [Read about Shared Experience Roots]
  • The conversation didn’t work out . Sometimes, for whatever reason, the conversation just peters out. Think about offering your companion a graceful exit. “I am so happy I finally got to introduce the two of you. I apologize for doing this, but W just came in and could use a hand.”

Follow up with your friends.

Your two friends hit it off after you introduced friends last night! Why not take things a step further and ask if they’d like to be connected?

Before connecting them, get their permission before sharing contact details or sending introduction texts/emails. Respecting boundaries is an emotional intimacy root!

You might also consider organizing another way for them to connect in person. More on that in the next section.

Invite them both to another gathering.

Repetition is essential when building friendships and community. We need a variety of experiences together to build enough roots to feel connected.

You see, most people make friends through proximity. Our friends are people we meet in places we frequent – neighborhood, school, work, place of worship, or the gym, to name a few.

However, you don’t need school or work to make friends. We can all create proximity. We just need to put ourselves out there. Take the risk. Initiating contact! Send that, “It was nice meeting you! Would you like to meet up for a walk sometime?” text message.

Yet… most people find that intimidating.

So why not give our friends a helping hand?

Create repetition for these two friends. Invite them to various activities and gatherings. No need to be too obvious about it; just extend a casual invitation whenever it makes sense. Doing this will allow them to build connections, make memories, and discover shared interests over time.

If you’re eager to take your role as a cultivator of friendships and community more seriously, read my write-up on How to Host an Open House and begin hosting these events periodically to allow those in your life to form stronger connections.

Remember, you aren’t in charge of this friendship.

You aren’t responsible for shepherding this friendship . After facilitating a chance meeting or two, let these two friends take it from there.

Final thoughts

We all have our own community.

The people in our community/our support system might not know each other, but they likely know of each other.

  • “Oh… You are A’s gym friend! So nice to meet you.”
  • “I’ve heard so many stories about you two when you were in college.”
  • “She told me that you kept them fed after the baby came. So happy she had you.”

We are more connected than we realize. Our communities are more expansive than we give ourselves credit for.

At the very least, mutual friends share you as a connection point. That’s a simple connection – acquaintances, formal community, or familiar friends are all valuable relationships to our overall social wellness .

Most people find “ meeting new friends ” to be uncomfortable, but we can help break the ice by providing thoughtful introductions amongst our friends.

Turn it into a game this year – How many times can you introduce friends this year? Just start by picking one or two and go from there.

keep the conversation going.

A Guide to the Total Solar Eclipse

By Rivka Galchen

A complete solar eclipse

On April 8th, the moon will partly and then entirely block out the sun. The total eclipse will be visible to those in a hundred-and-fifteen-mile-wide sash, called the path of totality, slung from the hip of Sinaloa to the shoulder of Newfoundland. At the path’s midline, the untimely starry sky will last nearly four and a half minutes, and at the edges it will last for a blink. On the ground, the lunacy around total eclipses often has a Lollapalooza feel. Little-known places in the path of totality—Radar Base, Texas; Perryville, Missouri—have been preparing, many of them for years, to accommodate the lawn chairs, soul bands, food trucks, sellers of commemorative pins, and porta-potties. Eclipse viewers seeking solitude may also cause problems: the local government of Mars Hill, Maine, is reminding people that trails on Mt. Katahdin are closed, because it is mud season and therefore dangerous. I have a friend whose feelings and opinions often mirror my own; when I told her a year ago that I had booked an Airbnb in Austin in order to see this eclipse, she looked at me as if I’d announced I was bringing my daughter to a pox party.

Altering plans because of this periodic celestial event has a long tradition, however. On May 28, 585 B.C., according to Herodotus, an eclipse led the Medes and Lydians, after more than five years of war, to become “alike anxious” to come to peace. More than a hundred years before that, the Assyrian royalty of Mesopotamia protected themselves from the ill omen of solar eclipses—and from other celestial signs perceived as threatening—by installing substitute kings and queens for the day. Afterward, the substitutes were usually killed, though in one instance, when the real king died, the stand-in, who had been a gardener, held the throne for decades. More recently, an eclipse on May 29, 1919, enabled measurements that recorded the sun bending the path of light in accordance with, and thus verifying, Einstein’s theory of general relativity .

Any given spot on the Earth witnesses a total solar eclipse about once every three hundred and seventy-five years, on average, but somewhere on the planet witnesses a total solar eclipse about once every eighteen months. In Annie Dillard’s essay “ Total Eclipse ,” she says of a partial solar eclipse that it has the relation to a total one that kissing a man has to marrying him, or that flying in a plane has to falling out of a plane. “Although the one experience precedes the other, it in no way prepares you for it,” she writes. During a partial eclipse, you put on the goofy paper eyeglasses and see the outline of the moon reducing its rival, the sun, to a solar cassava, or slimmer. It’s a cool thing to see, and it maybe hints at human vulnerability, the weirdness of light, the scale and reality of the world beyond our planet. But, even when the moon blocks ninety-nine per cent of the sun, it’s still daylight out. When the moon occludes the whole of the sun, everyday expectations collapse: the temperature quickly drops, the colors of shadows become tinny, day flips to darkness, stars precipitously appear, birds stop chirping, bees head back to their hives, hippos come out for their nightly grazing, and humans shout or hide or study or pray or take measurements until, seconds or minutes later, sunlight, and the familiar world, abruptly returns.

It is complete earthly luck that total eclipses follow such a dramatic procession. Our moon, which is about four hundred times less wide than our sun, is also about four hundred times closer to us. For this reason, when the Earth, moon, and sun align with one another, our moon conceals our sun precisely, like a cap over a lens. (I stress “our moon” because other moons around other planets, including planets that orbit other stars, have eclipses that almost certainly don’t line up so nicely.) If our moon were smaller or farther away, or our sun larger or nearer, our sun would never be totally eclipsed. Conversely, if our moon were larger or closer (or our sun smaller or farther away) then our sun would be wholly eclipsed—but we would miss an ecliptic revelation. During totality, a thin circle of brightness rings the moon. Johannes Kepler thought that the circle was the illumination of the atmosphere of the moon, but we now know that the moon has next to no atmosphere and that the bright circle (the corona) is the outermost part of the atmosphere of the sun . A million times less bright than the sun itself, the corona is visible (without a special telescope) only during an eclipse. If we’re judging by images and reports, the corona looks like a fiery halo. I have never seen the sun’s corona. The first total solar eclipse I’ll witness will be this one.

The physicist Frank Close saw a partial eclipse on a bright day in Peterborough, England, in June, 1954, at the age of eight. Close’s science teacher, using cricket and soccer balls to represent the moon and the sun, explained the shadows cast by the moon; Close attributes his life in science to this experience. The teacher also told the class that, forty-five years into the future, there would be a total eclipse visible from England, and Close resolved to see it. That day turned out to be overcast, so the moon-eclipsed sun wasn’t visible—but Close described seeing what felt to him like a vision of the Apocalypse, with a “tsunami of darkness rushing towards me . . . as if a black cloak had been cast over everything” and then the clouds over the sun dispersing briefly when totality was nearly over. Close has since seen six more eclipses and written two books about them, the first a memoir of “chasing” eclipses (“ Eclipse: Journeys to the Dark Side of the Moon ”) and the second a general explainer (“ Eclipses: What Everyone Needs to Know ”).

“I’ve tried to describe each of the eclipses I’ve seen, and I do describe them, but it’s not really describable. There’s no natural phenomenon to compare it to,” he told me recently. Describing an eclipse to someone who hasn’t seen one is like trying to describe the Beatles’ “Good Day Sunshine” to someone who has never heard music, he said. “You can describe notes, frequencies of vibration, but we all know that’s missing the whole thing.” Total eclipses are also close to impossible to film in any meaningful way. The light level plummets, which your eye can process in a way that, say, your mobile phone can’t.

In the half hour or so before totality, as the moon makes its progress across the circle of the sun, colors shift to hues of red and brown. (Dillard, a magus of describing the indescribable, writes that people looked to her as though they were in “a faded color print of a movie filmed in the Middle Ages”—the faces seemed to be those of people now dead, which made her miss her own century, and the people she knew, and the real light of day.) As more of the sun is covered, its light reaches us less directly. “Much of the light that you will be getting is light that has been scattered by the atmosphere from ten to twenty miles away,” Close said. Thus the color shift.

He showed me the equipment that he has used to watch six eclipses: a piece of cardboard about the size of an LP sleeve, with a square cut out of the middle, covered by dark glass. “I used gaffer tape to affix a piece of welder’s glass,” he said. There are small holes at the edge of the board, so he can see how shadows change as the moon eclipses more, and then less, of the sun. When sunlight comes from a crescent rather than from a circle, shadows become elongated along one axis and narrowed along another. “If you spread out your fingers, and look at the shadow of your hand, your fingers will look crablike, as if they have claws on them,” Close said.

Each eclipse Close has seen has been distinct. On a boat in the South Seas, the moon appeared more greenish black than black, “because of reflected light from the water,” he said. In the Sahara, the millions of square miles of sand acted as a mirror, so it was less dark, and Close could see earthshine making the formations on the moon’s surface visible. At another eclipse, he found himself focussed on the appearance of the light of the sun as it really is: white. “We think of it as yellow, but of course that’s just atmospheric scattering, the same mechanism that makes the sky appear blue,” he said. When he travelled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with his family, in 2017, his seven-year-old grandson said, half a minute before totality, that the asphalt road was “moving.” “It was these subtle bands of darker and lighter, moving along at walking pace. The effect it gave to your eye was that you thought the pavement was rippling,” Close said. He had never seen that before.

The moon doesn’t emit light; it only reflects it, like a mirror. In Oscar Wilde’s play “ Salomé ,” each character sees in the moon something of what he fears, or desires. The etymology of “eclipse” connects to the Greek word for failure, and for leaving, for abandonment. In Chinese, the word for eclipse comes from the term that also means “to eat,” likely a reference to the millennia-old description of solar eclipses happening when a dragon consumes the sun. If the moon is a mirror, then the moon during a solar eclipse is a dark and magic mirror.

A Hindu myth explains eclipses through the story of Svabhanu, who steals a sip of the nectar of the gods. The Sun and the Moon tell Vishnu, one of the most powerful of the gods. Vishnu decapitates Svabhanu, but not before he can swallow the sip of nectar. The nectar has made his head, now called Rahu, immortal. As revenge, Rahu periodically eats the Sun—creating eclipses. But, his throat being cut, he can’t swallow the Sun, so it reëmerges again and again. Rahu is in the wrong, obviously, but in ancient representations of him he is often grinning. To me, he looks mischievous rather than frightening.

The first story I can remember reading that featured an eclipse is Mark Twain’s “ A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court .” The wizard Merlin imprisons an engineer named Hank Morgan, who has accidentally travelled from nineteenth-century America to sixth-century Camelot. Morgan, a man who dresses and acts strangely for the sixth century, finds himself, as one would, sentenced to be burned at the stake. But he gets out of it—by convincing others that he is the cause of an eclipse that he knew would occur. As seems only natural for a beloved American story, it’s the (man from the) future that wins this particular standoff, over the ancient ways of Merlin.

To Close, the beginning of an eclipse feels like “a curtains-up statement from the heavens: Science works. Come back in an hour.” He finds it particularly moving that someone, using only measurements and reason, and the laws of celestial motion, could have predicted the April 8th eclipse down to the minute, maybe to the second. The eclipse that surprised the warring Medes and Lydians into peace may not have been a surprise to all; it is said to have been predicted by Thales of Miletus.

I asked Close if he’d ever met someone on his eclipse journeys who wasn’t much impressed. He said no. Still, it’s possible that I and my mirror friend both have the right intuition about this experience we’ve never had. In the last chapter of Roberto Bolaño’s novella “French Comedy of Horrors,” the young narrator witnesses an eclipse while at a soda fountain with his friends; he also witnesses the people around him witnessing the eclipse, including a couple doing a dance “that was somehow anachronistic but at the same time terrifying.” On his way home, he answers a ringing pay phone and finds himself in a lengthy conversation with a stranger who claims to be a member of the Clandestine Surrealist Group, writers living in Paris’s sewer system. The stranger invites the narrator (who wants desperately to be a poet) to join them, at an appointed time and place, months into the future—but says that they can’t pay for his ticket.

His whole eclipse day is banal (soda fountain, pay phone, the price of things) but also tempting, literally surreal, and like a dream. When our hero finally makes it home, at dawn, he sees Achille, the local drunk. Achille tells him that “the eclipse thing wasn’t such a big deal and that people were always getting excited about nothing. In his opinion, true and incredible things happened in the sky every day.” Nature’s everyday wonders might be the more clandestine ones. ♦
