Once you have put together an initial draft, it's a good idea to ask for feedback from family, friends and tutors. They will be able to look at your statement objectively and suggest ways it could be improved.

Incorporate their comments, and ask for further feedback. Don't worry if you have to do this three or four times - it's important you get your statement as perfect as possible before sending it off on your UCAS form.

How do I structure my nursing personal statement?

Your nursing personal statement should be structured with a clear beginning, middle and end, with the opening telling an anecdote or explaining why you are passionate about nursing.

The middle should generally focus on your work experience and current/past academic studies, and how these have helped you to develop skills that are useful and relevant to a career in nursing.

For example, you might talk about how your experience working in a care home helped you build and offer empathy to elderly people.

You should then write a memorable conclusion that mentions your plans for the future, and how you hope your nursing degree will help you achieve these.

What should I include in my nursing personal statement?

• Look at the content of the course and make sure your statement addresses the specific branch of nursing you are applying for, i.e. mental health , adult or child nursing . 
• Demonstrate important skillls that are required for a nursing degree , e.g. patience, empathy, teamwork and communication. Talk about how you have developed these, either at school/college, at your job or during hobbies or other activities.
• Most applicants spend the opening of their personal statement talking about why they want to study nursing , e.g. an unwell family member, or a friend who was in a car accident. Think carefully about whether there was one particular incident that sparked your interest in nursing.
• Don’t include any over-used phrases or quotes in your statement that university admissions tutors will have seen and heard before.
• Now is also not the time for jokes or humour - it often doesn't work well and admissions tutors might not be impressed!

How do I write an introduction to my nursing personal statement?

Like with any type of personal statement for university, we recommend you open with a paragraph on what you enjoy most about nursing, and why you want to study it at university. Again, an anecdote that inspired you to learn more about nursing will work well here, as long as you have a relevant story to tell.

For example, this applicant chose to talk about how their mother's illness inspired them to go into nursing:

"There has been many occasions during my life that I have spent hours sitting at a hospital bedside.

My mother battled a long term illness and as I sat with her trying to keep her spirits up, the Nurses who cared for her always drew my admiration. I feel there are a handful of truly inspirational professions and Nursing is without doubt one of them.

Along with doctors and other medical staff, nurses provide an invaluable service to society and to be part of that group has long been an ambition of mine."

Another applicant chose to talk about how their experience with mental health services as a teenager made them want to help others and make a difference in the world as an adult:

"I have wanted to work in Mental Health since I was 15 years old. When in crisis, I received a level of care which changed my life and I aspire to do the same for others. I also received care that was detrimental at times so I want to be a part of making a difference. I have seen a wide range of nursing approaches and I have learnt so much from my colleagues since working within the NHS, I now know what kind of nurse I want to be when I complete my training."

How do I write a conclusion for my nursing personal statement?

Try to round off your nursing personal statement with something memorable. This often includes talking about your extracurricular activities, hobbies and/or your ambitions for the future. For example:

" I am confident in my ability to communicate with people from any cultural background and an example of this would be during my time volunteering in a dog sanctuary in Paraguay. This was difficult due to the language barrier, and a virus outbreak between the dogs. I had to organize my time efficiently, an important skill for a nurse, communicate with vets and host families, in often very distressing times.

I acted effectively, thinking on my feet, all whilst remaining calm and treating the animals with compassion. This was a very challenging time for me but it was also very rewarding. I feel a career as a nurse, whilst challenging at times would also be very rewarding, educational, and encourage personal growth."

This applicant demonstrates that as well as communicating what you do currently, or have done in the past, it's also a good idea to try to include how these experiences have helped to shape you as a person, and how they make you a better candidate for a nursing course.

This is a question I asked myself when I wrote my nursing personal statement: ‘What do they want from me? What do they really want to hear?’.

You can write as much or little as possible on a personal statement (within the given word count), but what you write has to count - I’d say it was more about quality over quantity with this one.

But hopefully, I can give you some good quality information to help you write the perfect statement to bag you that interview and hopefully, the job!

Firstly, every statement should be unique to the role you’re applying for; so, remember to change it for every time you apply for a new job.

Secondly, always look at the Trust’s values, person specification and any other information they have uploaded for you; this is going to tell you what they are expecting from you to guide you to write your statement.

You will need to follow their essential and desirable criteria and give examples of how you have achieved these.

Now, what do most Trusts look for?

From my experience they want you to be the 6 Cs of Nursing; Care, Compassion, Commitment, Courage, Competence, Communication.

So, you have to demonstrate this within your statement along with some nice key themes such as; being empathetic, maintain dignity, being patient centred and showing trust - Trust values are normally built on these.

Furthermore, Trusts will want to provide the best care possible to patients and they want to see how you meet this through your statement and then in your interview.

Is at the heart of nursing and the care you provide should help to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.

They might also want to see that you genuinely care about other people and helping out.

This is how care is given which is based on empathy, dignity and respect.

This refers to the commitment to paitients and their individual care and overall experience.

This helps you to do the right thing at the right time.

It also enables you to speak up when needed.

However, everyone will be writing the same skills and experience (more than likely), so you also want to add something to make yourself stand out from the crowd .

Your statement should show you as a person and not just a generic piece of writing of what you can and can’t do.

Moreover, you need to shine, show that personality and passion through your writing.

Some personal statements I have been asked to read, have genuinely given me goose bumps, because you can feel that passion through the page, it’s lovely.

Nonetheless, I know it can be quite hard to get your head in the right place to do this.

Something I do, is, close my eyes and visualise the place, time, experience that I want to talk about.

I put myself back into that place and how lovely it made me feel at the time, which brings back those feelings and I will start writing.

Your statement should also show how committed you are to nursing and your long term goals should incorporate this.

Trusts want to see you are in it for the long run, not just a quick job fix at the time.

Some other things that would be worth mentioning are:

Multi-professional working

How you can effectively work within the multi-disciplinary team and build good relationships with other professionals.

Give examples of how you have done this and why it has benefited your team.

Administering medication safely

How you avoid drug errors?

What thing’s do you do?

This will show you are practising safely and will continue to do so when working for the Trust you’re applying for.

Accurate record keeping

However you have kept records whether it is paper and pen or on a computer you have to show how you did this and how you maintained confidentiality.

You need to show that you can write legible and accurately, which is why you need to get someone to proofread your personal statement just in case too!

You might be an experienced band 5 nurse looking to take the natural next step in your career progression.

Or you might be a newly qualified band 5 nurse who possesses the right experience and skills to jump ahead to a band 6 nursing position.

Wherever you are on the nursing career ladder, facing a band 6 nurse interview can be a nerve-wracking prospect.

That does not have to be the case if you are fully prepared, though.

The first step is to understand exactly meant by a ‘band 6 nurse’. Band 6 is the first level of senior nursing roles.

Job titles for this nursing band might include:

• Deputy Ward Manager
• Team Leader
• Charge Nurse
• Lead Practitioner
• Senior Staff Nurse

Depending on the type of clinical or community setting you work in, moving into a band 6 nursing position requires an increased level of responsibility and leadership.

The salary range for a band 6 nurse will depend on the specifics of the role and your employer.

For example, band 6 nurses working in an NHS setting can generally expect to earn between £30,000 and £37,000 in 2021.

What Skills and Experience Are Needed in a Band 6 Role?

The thought of stepping into a senior nursing position can seem a world away from band 5 nursing roles.

However, your experience up to this point will greatly inform your career progression into band 6.

Generally, at least one year to 18 month’s experience as a band 5 nurse is expected before progression to band 6.

In essence, once a nurse has outgrown their band 5 roles, they are ready to progress to band 6.

Should you be invited to interview for a band 6 nursing role, you can usually expect the interview to take place before a pane.

The size and construct of the panel will vary depending on the role you are interviewing for and the employer.

The panel will ask you several questions to ascertain your experience, skills and suitability for a senior nurse role.

In addition to the questions, you may be asked to create a presentation on a topic set by the panel.

The length of the presentation will generally range from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the topic and what the panel wants you to demonstrate.

The purpose of the presentation is to demonstrate:

Your understanding of the healthcare environment and the challenges healthcare professionals face

Band 6 Nurse Interview Questions

The exact questions you will be asked at your interview will depend on the band 6 role and the employer, but here are five questions with example answers to help you prepare:

1. Why Have You Applied for This Job?

The panel wants to know that you have done your research and are ready to progress to a band 6 position.

You know that you have the experience, skills, and drive to fulfill a band 6 role, so do not feel shy about selling yourself.

For example:

I enjoy my current position, but I know that I am capable of taking on more responsibility. I feel that the role of Senior Nurse would suit my leadership and communication skills.

2. What Is Your Understanding of the Band 6 Role You Are Interviewing For?

The panel wants to know that you have not only read the job description but also understand what roles and responsibilities are involved.

Find a way to condense the role down into a sentence or two.

Working as Charge Nurse, I will oversee the unit on a day-to-day basis, provide clinical leadership to junior staff and nurses, and plan, monitor and evaluate the care of patients. I will act as a role model, work as part of a team, and develop team members through mentorship and skill-assessment.

3. What Are the Six 'C's, and Why Do You Feel They Are Important?

This question demonstrates your knowledge and patient care skills.

The six 'C's are:

• Communication

These ensure that patients are effectively cared for and safe, are treated well and can build trust in their care providers.

Your answer should express this in your own words.

4. If One of Your Nursing Team Frequently Arrives Late to Their Shift, How Would You Address This?

The panel is asking you to demonstrate your managerial skills .

How will you supervise your team, and are you aware of the related staff policy?

I would begin by checking in on the member of staff in an informal way to find out the reason for their lateness and try to resolve the problem on that basis. If the lateness continued, I would contact HR to find out what the policy was for handling this situation and decide what further action should be taken.

5. Do You Have Any Questions for Us?

Surprisingly, this is a question that can derail many up-to-that-point successful interviews. This is not your chance to ask about salary, holidays or sickness pay.

Instead, what the panel is asking here is for you to ask a question that demonstrates your enthusiasm for the role and what you could bring to it. What value could you add?

With the planned extension to the unit, will there be an intake of newly qualified nursing staff? And if so, will I have the opportunity to mentor them?

Should you be asked to interview for a band 6 nurse position, the level of preparation you undertake will be key to your success.

Step 1 . Do Your Research

This is not just about remembering the job description by heart. There are so many other areas that you should research too.

Whether it is an NHS trust , a private healthcare provider or a commercial setting, research who you will be working for.

Its website is always a good place to start.

What are its values? What are its plans? What challenges does it face?

Your research could also include:

• The field of nursing you will be working in
• Relevant innovations in healthcare
• Wider developments that may affect healthcare, such as changes in legislation

Step 2 . Think Up Examples

You may be asked to give examples from your experience that demonstrate your suitability for the band 6 nursing role.

For example, what examples would show that you have excellent leadership skills or can cope in stressful situations?

Examine the responsibilities of the band 6 role and think up examples that would fit.

Step 3 . Prepare Your Presentation

If you have been asked to make a presentation, this is the time to prepare it.

Remember to fully follow the guidelines provided, be that how long the presentation should take or whether you need to provide PowerPoint slides.

Consider why you have been asked to talk about this particular topic. How does it demonstrate your suitability for the band 6 roles?

Step 4 . Question The Questions

It is difficult to know beforehand what questions you will be asked in your interview, but a slight mindset change may help you to give better answers on the day.

Instead of taking questions at their face value, consider why the panel have asked you that specific question. What do they want to hear in your answer?

For example, do they want to find out how you cope under pressure?

Are they interested in how well you will adapt from team member to team leader?

Step 5 . Practice Speaking and Breathing

Most people will experience some level of nerves in a job interview. A good coping mechanism is to practice speaking beforehand.

For example, explain who you are and why you want the job to your mirror. If you have someone you feel relaxed with, ask if you can practice on them.

Get used to consciously slowing your breathing too. Practice taking deep breaths that fill your diaphragm. Slowing your breathing will calm you down.

Step 6 . Consider Your Career Plan

Most people hate the interview question, ‘ Where do you see yourself in five years? ’, but there is a valid point behind it: career planning.

Career planning is the difference between drifting from job to job or progressing along a path that brings you job satisfaction.

On the day of the interview, arrive a little early but not so early that you are an inconvenience.

Take a copy of the job description with you, or have it available to view on your mobile phone so that you can refresh your memory before the interview begins.

Make sure you have had sufficient sleep, have eaten and that you are hydrated. Do not drink too much coffee before the interview as it can increase your feelings of nervousness.

Make sure your appearance is smart , whether you are wearing your own clothes or your work uniform.

I am applying for a Mental Health Nursing degree because I want to help people who suffer from mental illness. With the skills I have acquired whilst working as a support worker and whilst studying a Health Professions course, I believe I will achieve my goal of going to university.

The role includes writing care plans, interacting with the patients as well as carrying out ward rounds with a group of healthcare professionals.I would like to expand my knowledge further at a degree level and possibly higher. I’m also aware of the importance of treating people in a non-judgemental manner and to respect equality in a mental health setting such as working with employees and clients with different religious beliefs and different cultures. I feel it is important to use the Mental Health role to promote mental health illness to the public. I am convinced that mental illness is an area in which most people are uncomfortable either talking about or taking part in preventing and supporting those who suffer from mental issues. I have excellent communication skills which I have gained through working in care .For example when I am communicating with clients that have trouble speaking, I will use good body language and good eye contact. I sometimes use objects such as toys when they want to play or a spoon when it is time to eat. I learned to use documentation when working with clients as each individual client has a care plan that we use to write their daily notes such as personal care, activities and appointments with doctors. This helps the other employees during handover because they will know how to help the clients based on the documentation I have written. This has taught me the importance of communication and team work as it contributes to successfully support people who suffer from mental illness.

I have a stammer but I managed to enroll on a speech therapy program called McGuire program. The program gave me confidence and my speech has improved since then. The program made me face my fear of speaking. The program helped me to accept my speech problem and taught me to live with my stammer. One of the techniques used were, they made me speak to 100 strangers and disclosing to the strangers that “I have a stammer and I have been hiding for years but now I am happy as a stammerer and I now have gained control of my speech”. The program helped me to apply the skills I have learnt on the program and implement them directly to my mental health work for example , It taught me to empathise with people that suffer from mental illness and to always give consideration when communicating with them so that they can be comfortable communicating with me .

I was born and raised in South Africa and moved to England for career opportunities. I have had many family members who work in a mental health setting and I saw the satisfaction they receive from helping patients. I have also had family members suffer from mental health problems, but with my family member having experience with the mental health professional experience, they were able to offer advice on how they can be treated. That inspired me to pursue a career in mental health. I know that studying Mental Health Nursing at university will be challenging because health care professionals must have the ability to make decisions, show compassion and support the diverse needs of individuals in their care. The role will test my skills and abilities however I am confident that I can meet these challenges and choosing nursing will help me fulfil my ambition of supporting and treating others in a mental healthcare environment.
