Before you interview, it's essential to draft a great cover letter that shows off your skills and what you'll bring to the job. We'll help you write one that'll catch any hotel employer's eye, from researching the hotel to opening and closing your letter.

How do you write an application letter for a hotel job?

  • Start your letter with your contact information. Then, introduce yourself and say why you want to work at the hotel.
  • Include any relevant skills or experience from your resume in your cover letter, emphasizing those found in the job description.
  • Close the letter by thanking the hiring staff for their time, and reiterating your enthusiasm for the position.

  • What the hotel will require will vary by position. For instance, if you're at the front desk, you'll need good people skills, as well as good organizations skills. If you're in housekeeping, you'll need good time management skills.

Step 4 Research the hotel.

  • Another way you can research the hotel is to walk around the hotel. Try to observe the employees in the department you'll be working and watch how they interact with each other.   • For example, maybe you've noted the hotel has a relaxed culture and that most employees enjoy having lunch together. That hotel is probably looking for someone who works well with others and can enjoy the company of coworkers.

Step 1 Begin with your header and contact information.

  • Your date should look like the following example: December 3, 2015

Step 3 Add the company's contact information.

  • As an example, you could write, "My name is Joe Jeffries, and I heard about this front desk position on Indeed.com. I'm excited to be applying for it, as I have read how much Rattle Hotels values customer service and I am a people-person who loves putting the customer first."
  • This paragraph, as well as the last paragraph, are good places to include bits of information connected to what you found out about the culture. For instance, if you noticed that the people working at the hotel are close-knit, you could write, "I can see your hotel values its employees, as well, and I look forward to working with this great group of people."

Step 2 Lay out your skills to show your relevancy.

  • For instance, maybe you've noted that one of the required skills is interpersonal skills. You could write, "In the past, I've worked with many different types of people at a variety of retail jobs, which helped to develop my interpersonal skills. I learned to stay calm when dealing with stressful situations by taking a deep breath and thinking about the best possible solution to the problem, which I think will be a huge asset when working the front desk at Rattle Hotel."

Step 3 Include the keywords.

  • As an example, you could write, "I have noticed that you encourage a professional culture, and my experience as a front desk clerk in Regalia Hotels has given me the needed experience to be the professional you need at the front desk. I would be a good fit for your hotel, and I request that you give me the chance to prove that in person at an interview."

Step 2 Thank the person for his or her time.

  • You can use other closings, such as "Thank you," or "Yours truly," to end your letter instead.

Step 4 Proofread your letter.

Applying for a job in hotel or restaurant management requires a personable nature, attention to detail and the ability to project confidence. The letter you draft in conjunction with your job application should demonstrate that you're articulate, knowledgeable and have the ability to be engaging with customers and staff.

Introduce Yourself

The opening of your letter should both introduce you and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the potential of working with the hotel or restaurant. You want to sound knowledgeable and genuine in your approach. Example:

I'm delighted to submit my application for the role of manager of the Elegant Hotel Company. My family has been a patron of this wonderful establishment for more than 30 years, and I'm enamored at the prospect of building on the legacy and reputation of a business I have such fond personal memories of.

Outline Your Qualifications

While you should lead with and emphasize your specific experience in the hotel or restaurant management industries, other areas to focus on include customer service, employee and vendor relations and event planning. Example:

In addition to the eight years I spent managing The Fine Dining restaurant in New York City, I also have substantial experience in catering and event planning, having worked my way through college for a major convention planning company. I pride myself on providing exceptional degrees of customer service, and I place high value on creating the best possible working relationships with my staffers.

If you have specific education, experience or training related to the industry, make note of that as well. This is especially important if the job description asks for specific skill sets.

Showcase Your Personality

Hotel and restaurant hospitality is all about creating a memorable experience for customers, so make sure your application letter showcases your personality. Example:

I’m a big believer in creating enjoyable experiences for every guest. It’s my job to ensure every person not only has everything they want or need during their stay, I want them to feel catered to and appreciated. This attitude is something I try to weave through every element of my management role.

Conclude your letter by referencing any attachments, such as resume, letters of recommendation or even industry awards you won yourself or on behalf of previous employers. Finish with a call to action, such as requesting an interview or noting some other type of next step. Example:

Attached, please find my resume, a copy of the International Hotel Association Customer Service Excellence award I received in 2016 and three letters of recommendation from past employers. If you feel I'm a good fit for this position, I'd love the chance to meet in person and learn more about this exciting opportunity.

Lean on community for hope.

I can only take so much of the doom-filled environmental news that seems to permeate our world today. Spend too much time reading or watching and the next thing I know I am sent down the spiral of not doing enough, not trying hard enough. Why should I have hope that things will get better?

While taking an environmental science class, I was offered an opportunity to look at climate change from the perspective of hope and possibility. But I still didn’t understand; Why be hopeful?

I don’t have anywhere else to go, the negativity is consuming. We are doomed, Earth is doomed. Why not listen to hope, despair doesn’t seem to be solving the problem.

Question your beliefs. Connect with nature. Support yourself and others. Do what you can. Take collective action.

The hope is sneaking in, but I still worry for the future. What if it’s all not enough?

Keep going, and push yourself more, even when it’s uncomfortable. Those feelings won’t go away, but your actions will show your true intent.

Lean on others; it may not feel like it, but they do understand. Build the community you’ve been looking for.

I know I will continue to worry, but through the support I feel, I now have hope.

Hotel prices are shameful

“Greed robs us of our ability to appreciate the simple joys in life.”

Simply put, it’s shameful that a family has to spend thousands of dollars to celebrate the wonderful achievement of their child’s graduation from Penn State ... after already spending many thousands of dollars getting them through school.

I understand supply and demand principles, but I have a problem when hotels are charging three times as much for a given room, yet alone ten times the rate.

Come on! How dare you?

Solution to ‘political chaos’

This year set a world record for the greatest number of people living in countries that are holding nationwide elections (more than 4 billion).

That’s more than half of humanity. Our own elections in 2018 and 2022 broke all the records for voter turnout.

But, we are starting to feel that voting in elections is no guarantee of democracy.

There seems to be no compromise. Presidential-candidate Trump tells us, “I alone can fix it.” He seems to intend to be President for life, if elected ... and then, no more elections? Can we rely on our political parties to help us sort through election chaos? Or are political parties the problem?

Our government began without any political parties. Our Constitution, intentionally, does not mention political parties. There was great concern that partisan loyalties could become stronger than institutional loyalties. But we have seen that a two-party political system can lead toward an area of “centrism,” where the two political parties can find some common ground that appeals to voters. The result is political stability and economic growth.

But, Trump plans no compromise. Instead, he plans to empower The Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 (climate deniers), The Heartland Institute, and his old pal, Steve Bannon, to reshape our government, and to make “retribution” the central theme of his campaign. This is not compromise, it’s dictatorship.

We need to convince the 40% of voters, who say they are independent, to learn as much as possible about our political chaos, to study the issues, and to vote.

Thompson’s actions don’t support farmers

Representative Glenn Thompson (Pennsylvania District 15) claims that he is all about supporting Pennsylvania farmers. Who is he kidding?

According to the National Environmental Scorecard, Thompson’s overall score for 2023 was 3%, and lifetime score of 6%! He has worked to repeal actions on climate and environmental justice, to rollback clean water safeguards, and to undermine progress on conservation and climate.

This has huge consequences for Pennsylvania’s economy. Pennsylvania has 52,000 farms and 7.3 million acres of farmland, producing $83.8 billion in direct economic output. Climate change will dramatically reduce agricultural income by altering growing seasons for crops, increasing heat stress for livestock, and increasing flooding and storm water runoff, according to the Pennsylvania Climate Action Plan of 2018.

Too much rain can reduce crop yields as much as 40%. Lack of winter freezing leads to problems with soil and livestock. Increasing temperatures affect cows’ milk production and calving times, require lambs to be sheared more often, and increase hooved animals’ risk for parasites.

Adding to the damage, Thompson proudly supports “energy-related bills” that harm our land and water. He supported the repeal of the Greenhous Gas Reduction fund within the EPA, preventing “unelected bureaucrats from forcing their climate agenda on the American people.” Why does Thompson want to squash efforts of citizens who are toiling to protect our land and water – and preserve our farms and agricultural economy?

Letter | local hotel owners could save downtown santa cruz.

We have problems downtown with homeless, affordable housing, empty retail spaces, expensive parking and more taxes because of it. The city of Santa Cruz uses every possible tax the state will allow. Is there a better way?

There is a renaissance, of sorts, going on in the Beach Street area. Older hotels have been replaced with new ones. Others are getting fixed up and redesigned. This effort by a lot of local owners is going to save downtown. The TOT tax at 12% will be raised as the hotels are getting higher rates all over California. This will create a windfall for our city.

The cornerstone of all this is the new La Bahia. We thank Charles Canfield and the Seaside Co. for acquiring it 40-plus years ago. They had many hassles and many plans, but their efforts will bring us more customers spending money.

Coming soon is Hotel Cruz providing a downtown luxury option. These travelers will spend at our retail shops and restaurants. It will help our downtown problems and bring the beach to downtown.
