Dancer and TV host Regine Tolentino said the greatest challenge she had to overcome so far was giving birth to her third daughter via C-section at age 41 in the middle of a pandemic.

“This happened at the start of lockdown,” recalled Regine, who gave birth to Rosie, her daughter with partner Dondi Narciso, on March 17, two days after the government imposed a Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to help stop the spread of the deadly Covid-19.

“Rosie had pneumonia so she was confined at the hospital for 10 days. That’s why I went through so much stress. I was crying night and day,” Regine said during the virtual media gathering that launched her as the endorser of the food supplement Radiance C.

“It was so stressful not being able to see your child for a few days. There’s also stress in waiting for my breastmilk letdown, as well as how to go about in bringing Rosie home. They had wanted to keep her at the hospital for two more weeks, and so I had to consult a lot of doctors and professionals to make sure that it’s already safe to take her home,” she recalled. “It was a very traumatic experience for me. Aside from that, taking care of a fragile newborn was difficult. It’s been a long time since my children were small.”

Regine said her experience was made more difficult by her emergency C-section delivery. “I couldn’t move. It’s a new thing for me because my previous deliveries were all normal. I’m also used to being super active. I dance, work out at the gym and go to the office every day. I had to adjust to changes in my body,” she explained.

Fortunately, Dondi was there to support Regine, as well as Reigen and Reign, her two daughters with ex-husband Lander Vera-Perez.

“They helped in making me feel good. It’s comforting to know that you have a family that supports you. I was overwhelmed by their love and prayers,” she related. “The experience brought us closer. We had so many realizations as a family.”

Regine, who is also a fashion designer and businesswoman, said the pandemic has affected her both emotionally and financially. She then talked about coping with the new normal. “Like most people, I really went through that whole stage of being stressed and experiencing so much anxiety. I had just given birth. I had to deal with the unknown,” she further said. “I gained a lot of weight, but my doctor advised against working out. I did a lot of resting, cooking and cleaning the house. I enjoyed doing chores. They’re good substitutes for workouts.”

Meanwhile, Regine said her businesses suffered a great deal. “We’re into garments, party dresses, costume rentals; but because of the lockdown we didn’t have clients. We had to think fast. We had to adapt. Instead, we began doing PPEs (personal protective equipment), face masks and protected apparels that are fashionable,” she declared.

Her dance studio, RT Studios, had to close down, too, because mass gathering was prohibited. “Group exercises weren’t allowed anymore. We had to reformat our whole system. We’re doing online classes now. It’s hard to adjust because Zumba, ballroom dancing, or even live performances, are all about physical touch. They require very close interaction. I’m slowly learning how to embrace it,” she declared.

“Everything changes from hereon. This saddens me. I don’t know if we’d be able to go back to the ‘old normal.’ These days, I just appreciate all the happy memories I had while dancing and performing. I don’t know what to expect in the future,” Regine pointed out.

To maintain a well-balanced life, especially while experiencing a pandemic, Regine said everything should begin with the feeling of gratitude. “My experiences made me realize that the things I used to think were important no longer have value today. I’m just thankful for being alive and healthy every day, for being with my family and for surviving this pandemic.”

During the press event, Regine was asked how she manages to look good while keeping a busy schedule.

“I ask that question many times, what can I do to feel beautiful, to be more radiant every day. Because it truly is a challenge not only for new moms but for everybody – men, women, children, it truly is difficult to look your best,” she said.

“It wasn’t easy and still an ongoing process for me because when the pandemic started I felt my ugliest. I felt so disgusted with myself because I sort of let go and enjoyed my pregnancy and then after giving birth, tapos not moving around and being so lethargic… and just doing nothing and just holding your child.”

“So I really had to pick myself up out of bed and just do anything and everything to inspire myself to move and to dress up and to take care of myself. And it’s an effort and it’s not easy and it’s a slow process.”

Regine, who owns a dance studio and a dress boutique, also shared that she had to pivot her businesses since they were affected by the pandemic.

“ Yung b usiness ko for the garments costumes, dance clothes, and all of that we had to change it. We had to stock everything and we’re not doing PPEs, we’re doing face masks, we’re doing protective apparel that is fashionable, that people still feel confident and that they look good and protecting themselves at the same time,” she said.  

“ Sa studio naman namin unfortunately, we have to shut down and reformat the whole system. We are doing online classes now and you know it’s hard to adjust because like me, when I have to do Zumba or ballroom dancing or even performances, live shows or whatever, it’s all about that physical touch.”

The dancer and TV host admits she misses the close interaction and connection she has with students.

“ It’s really hard to adapt and adjust but slowly na-appreciate ko yung beauty of having online classes because somehow, kahit hindi physical, you still have that connection mentally. It’s a little bit more challenging because you are in a different environment and iba talaga yung energy when you are together with students or when you are also a teacher and I am slowly learning how to embrace it .”

Overlooked No More: The Underground Graffiti Adventures of Dondi

Donald Joseph White, considered a legend before “street art” became popular, turned New York City’s subways into rolling canvases of color, humor and social commentary.

In the 1970s, decades before entire New York City subway cars were wrapped with ads for Target or Amazon, teenagers with lots of talent — but little money — turned trains into rolling canvases, with graffiti tags that proclaimed their identities through kinetic lettering and comic book-style characters.

In a city reeling from near bankruptcy, their spray-painted expressions gave the cars a touch of color, humor or social commentary as they pulled into dirty stations or rumbled along streets lined with blocks of buildings that had been abandoned, incinerated or reduced to rubble.

Critics and commuters called it vandalism. Donald White considered it art.

White, better known as DONDI, was stylish and shy, but his pieces were forceful visual postcards from the margins of the city. They ranged from quickly written tags to creations that covered whole cars, making him a legend on the streets and in galleries years before “street art” became popular, and setting a standard that is still followed to this day.

He was a master of technique, working for days in his Brooklyn home on designs that he would later spray paint during nighttime forays in train yards and tunnels. And when downtown galleries discovered the medium in the early 1980s, Dondi was among the first aerosol artists to achieve aboveground success. Long after his contemporaries traded train yards for galleries by the mid-1980s, he would still hit a whole car. Later, he produced sketches and collages that were as precise and innovative as his subway graffiti.

And then he was gone. Dondi was 37 when he died, on Oct. 2, 1998, of complications of AIDS. But his reputation as the “style master” endures, with his sketches now going for $100,000 or more, and his canvases for triple that.

“I never had to compromise myself,” he said in the book “Dondi White: Style Master General” (2001) written by his brother, Michael White, and Andrew Witten. “It was always me, doing what was comfortable, and relaying the message that I didn’t have to be taught to be creative and do good things. I guess what I’m saying is that I’m here and I want to be heard. I come from the streets, I painted on subways, and I feel my work is important. I want people to see it — I want to influence others.”

Donald Joseph White was born in Manhattan on April 7, 1961, the youngest of five brothers to Alan Albert White, Jr., an African-American nurse and political campaign worker, and Lucy Mary Espanet, an Italian-American nurse. Nicknamed Dondi as a child, after the popular comic strip of an Italian orphan adopted by an American soldier during World War II, he attended a parochial school in East New York, Brooklyn, and passed the time riding his bike, raising pigeons on the roof of his house and drawing.

His earliest interest in graffiti was practical: he kept an eye out for tags by gangs whenever he ventured beyond his block to make sure he wasn’t entering dangerous turf, like Intermediate School 302.

“You couldn’t go out to Miller Park anymore because of the Tomahawks, which was a black gang,” he said in a 1995 interview that was published in “Dondi White: Style Master General.” “And then there was the Crazy Homicides, a Puerto Rican gang that was over on Pitkin Avenue near 302. They had that area. And across Atlantic Avenue there were the crazy Irish kids called the Headers.”

But along the way, his interest in drawing led him to try his hand at graffiti.

His brother Michael White said Dondi first took to the trains in the mid-1970s with a graffiti crew known as TOP, an acronym for The Odd Partners. Within a few years, he was covering entire cars of trains that traversed miles of tracks, his work commanding notice from southeast Brooklyn to the northernmost reaches of the Bronx.

His style later drew admirers even outside the five boroughs.

He was known for his palette of soft colors and his ability to render his vision quickly and precisely.

“When I looked at something, I would see a line out of place,” he said in 1995. “Whereas other guys, they couldn’t see it, they couldn’t see that their ‘E’ got skinny in that section, that they didn’t think of it in that manner. My whole idea, my thing for style, was keeping the letters consistent, keeping them flowing.”

His Children of the Grave series — the title taken from a Black Sabbath song — was among his most memorable of his whole-car work. The three pieces were produced between 1978 and 1980, featuring his name emblazoned across the car, flanked by cartoon figures or an outstretched hand and dotted with stylistic flourishes.

“He had a really beautiful, clear concise way of painting,” said John Matos, a graffiti artist known as Crash . “He would stare at it, pull back, do a line and look at it. It was like he was doing math. His paintings looked simple, but they were not.”

Yet no matter how much buzz his pieces generated, they were — like all graffiti — ephemeral. Very often, apart from his sketches, photographs are the only remaining testament.

The most iconic image of Dondi was taken by the photographer Martha Cooper. In it, she captured Dondi, spray can in hand, straddling two subway cars at daybreak inside a Brooklyn train yard. The photo, she said in a recent interview, “captured the intensity of having to paint quickly and illegally.”

It now appears on the commemorative reissue of “Subway Art,” the seminal book Cooper compiled with Henry Chalfant in 1984.

“That photo alone did a lot for the culture,” Cooper said. “It captured an urban adventure.”

Eric Felisbret, a former graffiti artist and friend, said Dondi was generous with his time and advice with younger artists, giving them outlines to follow or touching up details himself.

“He had this whole crew of wannabes,” said Felisbret, the author of “Graffiti New York” (2009). “He was someone who not only had great command over letter forms, he became known for mentoring others. He was a style leader.”

He dressed and acted like a leader, too, said Patti Astor, the platinum-haired artist who gained fame during New York’s 1980s downtown scene.

“Dondi was very understated,” Astor said. “His jean jackets were pressed, he had beautiful shirts. He was very good-looking and very elegant, and that commanded respect. He knew exactly where he was going to go and how he had to play the game to get there, and he was not going to compromise. To make a name for yourself in graffiti is a literal statement, after all.”

Astor gave Dondi his first solo show at Fun Gallery, a venue in the East Village that she ran with Bill Stelling. (The gallery has also exhibited Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.)

Dondi took to the gallery scene, with shows elsewhere in New York City and abroad. The timing was right; eventually graffiti began to fade from the public eye as city officials aggressively ordered train cars to be scrubbed before putting them into service.

Two decades after Dondi’s death, street art is commonplace, if not tame, attracting muralists who never did traditional graffiti, much less paint in a train yard. Whole-car advertisements on subway cars are just as common, as the city has sought new ways to generate revenue.

Yet Dondi attained a measure of immortality as a master of ephemeral art. His reputation has only grown, said the artist Sandra Fabara, who starred in the hip-hop cult classic “ Wild Style ” and is known as Lady Pink .

“You wish you could do style like Dondi, just like you wish you could play guitar like Hendrix,” she said. “But no one ever will.”

Using the name Dondi (a version of his own name) was considered very risky at the time, as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York Police Department (NYPD) were trying to crack down on writers. In 1979, Dondi officially adopted his name when he painted a giant piece on the roof of his house.

He became a member of TOP crew (The Odd Partners) in 1977. In 1978, Dondi formed his own crew, named CIA (Crazy Inside Artists), which included other prominent artists such as his good friend DURO. For the next 20-odd years, Dondi became recognized as the stylistic standard, influencing generations of graffiti writers.

Dondi pioneered many of the styles and techniques still used by modern graffiti artists. Though he would often do wildstyle pieces for the benefit of other writers (like the famous 2MANY piece), he wanted the public to be able to read and enjoy his work, so he would focus on readable letters with intricate fills and characters.

His most famous work was Children of the Grave Parts 1, 2 and 3—three whole cars on the New York City Subway in the years 1978 through 1980. The name of the piece was taken from a Black Sabbath song. Journalist Martha Cooper filmed the final piece from start to finish. On this last piece, Dondi adopted the cartoon characters from the late Vaughn Bode. He later painted a version of Children of the Grave 3 in a studio.

He was the first graffiti artist to have a one-man show in the Netherlands and Germany, and his work is collected by European museums.

As attested by newspapers and magazines of the early 1980s, like People magazine he worked with the Fun Gallery and together with artists of the like of Jean-Michel Basquiat , Lee Quinones, Keith Haring , ERO (Dominique Philbert), Rammellzee , Fab 5 Freddy , Futura 2000, Toxic , Zephyr , and others, he brought Graffiti art from the streets to art galleries, and museums of the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Dondi died of AIDS on October 2, 1998.

Dondi had no children but his family, including brother Michael White and his son Mike White have been moving his legacy forward. Dondi left behind hundreds of paintings and drawings, the ownership of which is still being disputed. Zephyr, IZ the Wiz, Doc and Keo painted tribute murals between 1998 and 2000. The glass-pipe artist Marbleslinger features a Dondi stencil on a series of pieces from 2008.

Dondi was featured on a Converse shoe as part of the Product Red project (2007) as well as on a capsule clothing line by Kool Sugar Apparel that was to be available in 2016. Parts of the proceeds are going to an AIDS charity. In 2019 the Dondi White Foundation partnered with Virgil Abloh for his Off-White clothing line. Proceeds donated to God's we deliver. In January 2018 on an Artnet auction, a 1984 Dondi painting, titled Solid Formation , estimated between $50,000 and $70,000 USDm sold for US$240,000.

While stationed on the Italian border, six American soldiers befriend a 5-year-old orphan, nickname him Dondi, and make him their mascot. Their major problem becomes keeping the youngster's presence a secret from their tough top sergeant. When their outfit is transferred back to the States, little Dondi stows away on the troopship and is smuggled into New York. Before long he loses contact with his friends and has a series of adventures in Macy's department store and a run-in with a spurious blind beggar. Meanwhile, one of the G.I.'s, Dealey, and his singer-sweetheart, Liz, have launched a nationwide search for the little fellow. When the boy is finally found, he is detained by the immigration authorities for eventual deportation, but Dealey and Liz enlist the aid of columnist Walter Winchell and succeed in having Dondi declared an American citizen by act of Congress. Dealey and Liz then decide to marry and legally adopt Dondi.

Overlooked No More: The Underground Graffiti Adventures of Dondi

Donald Joseph White, considered a legend before “street art” became popular, turned New York City’s subways into rolling canvases of color, humor and social commentary.

White, better known as DONDI, was stylish and shy, but his pieces were forceful visual postcards from the margins of the city. They ranged from quickly written tags to creations that covered whole cars, making him a legend on the streets and in galleries years before “street art” became popular, and setting a standard that is still followed to this day.

He was a master of technique, working for days in his Brooklyn home on designs that he would later spray paint during nighttime forays in train yards and tunnels. And when downtown galleries discovered the medium in the early 1980s, Dondi was among the first aerosol artists to achieve aboveground success. Long after his contemporaries traded train yards for galleries by the mid-1980s, he would still hit a whole car. Later, he produced sketches and collages that were as precise and innovative as his subway graffiti.

And then he was gone. Dondi was 37 when he died, on Oct. 2, 1998, of complications of AIDS. But his reputation as the “style master” endures, with his sketches now going for $100,000 or more, and his canvases for triple that.

“I never had to compromise myself,” he said in the book “Dondi White: Style Master General” (2001) written by his brother, Michael White, and Andrew Witten. “It was always me, doing what was comfortable, and relaying the message that I didn’t have to be taught to be creative and do good things. I guess what I’m saying is that I’m here and I want to be heard. I come from the streets, I painted on subways, and I feel my work is important. I want people to see it — I want to influence others.”

Donald Joseph White was born in Manhattan on April 7, 1961, the youngest of five brothers to Alan Albert White, Jr., an African-American nurse and political campaign worker, and Lucy Mary Espanet, an Italian-American nurse. Nicknamed Dondi as a child,  after the popular comic strip  of an Italian orphan adopted by an American soldier during World War II, he attended a parochial school in East New York, Brooklyn, and passed the time riding his bike, raising pigeons on the roof of his house and drawing.

His earliest interest in graffiti was practical: he kept an eye out for tags by gangs whenever he ventured beyond his block to make sure he wasn’t entering dangerous turf, like Intermediate School 302.

“You couldn’t go out to Miller Park anymore because of the Tomahawks, which was a black gang,” he said in a 1995 interview that was published in “Dondi White: Style Master General.” “And then there was the Crazy Homicides, a Puerto Rican gang that was over on Pitkin Avenue near 302. They had that area. And across Atlantic Avenue there were the crazy Irish kids called the Headers.”

But along the way, his interest in drawing led him to try his hand at graffiti.

His brother Michael White said Dondi first took to the trains in the mid-1970s with a graffiti crew known as TOP, an acronym for The Odd Partners. Within a few years, he was covering entire cars of trains that traversed miles of tracks, his work commanding notice from southeast Brooklyn to the northernmost reaches of the Bronx.

His style later drew admirers even outside the five boroughs.

He was known for his palette of soft colors and his ability to render his vision quickly and precisely.

“When I looked at something, I would see a line out of place,” he said in 1995. “Whereas other guys, they couldn’t see it, they couldn’t see that their ‘E’ got skinny in that section, that they didn’t think of it in that manner. My whole idea, my thing for style, was keeping the letters consistent, keeping them flowing.”

The three pieces were produced between 1978 and 1980, featuring his name emblazoned across the car, flanked by cartoon figures or an outstretched hand and dotted with stylistic flourishes.

“He had a really beautiful, clear concise way of painting,” said John Matos, a graffiti artist known as  Crash . “He would stare at it, pull back, do a line and look at it. It was like he was doing math. His paintings looked simple, but they were not.”

Yet no matter how much buzz his pieces generated, they were — like all graffiti — ephemeral. Very often, apart from his sketches, photographs are the only remaining testament.

The most iconic image of Dondi was taken by the photographer Martha Cooper. In it, she captured Dondi, spray can in hand, straddling two subway cars at daybreak inside a Brooklyn train yard. The photo, she said in a recent interview, “captured the intensity of having to paint quickly and illegally.”

It now appears on the commemorative reissue of  “Subway Art,” the seminal book  Cooper compiled with  Henry Chalfant  in 1984.

“That photo alone did a lot for the culture,” Cooper said. “It captured an urban adventure.”

Eric Felisbret, a former graffiti artist and friend, said Dondi was generous with his time and advice with younger artists, giving them outlines to follow or touching up details himself.

“He had this whole crew of wannabes,” said Felisbret, the author of  “Graffiti New York”  (2009). “He was someone who not only had great command over letter forms, he became known for mentoring others. He was a style leader.”

He dressed and acted like a leader, too, said Patti Astor, the platinum-haired artist who gained fame during New York’s 1980s downtown scene.

“Dondi was very understated,” Astor said. “His jean jackets were pressed, he had beautiful shirts. He was very good-looking and very elegant, and that commanded respect. He knew exactly where he was going to go and how he had to play the game to get there, and he was not going to compromise. To make a name for yourself in graffiti is a literal statement, after all.”

Astor gave Dondi his first solo show at Fun Gallery, a venue in the East Village that she ran with Bill Stelling. (The gallery has also exhibited Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.)

Dondi took to the gallery scene, with shows elsewhere in New York City and abroad. The timing was right; eventually graffiti began to fade from the public eye as city officials aggressively ordered train cars to be scrubbed before putting them into service.

Two decades after Dondi’s death, street art is commonplace, if not tame, attracting muralists who never did traditional graffiti, much less paint in a train yard. Whole-car advertisements on subway cars are just as common, as the city has sought new ways to generate revenue.

Yet Dondi attained a measure of immortality as a master of ephemeral art. His reputation has only grown, said the artist Sandra Fabara, who starred in the hip-hop cult classic “ Wild Style ” and is known as  Lady Pink .

“You wish you could do style like Dondi, just like you wish you could play guitar like Hendrix,” she said. “But no one ever will.”
