The main difference between a solicited application letter and an unsolicited one is whether a company receiving the letter announced a job opening or not. If a company announced an opening, the letter is considered solicited because it was requested. However, if a company had not asked for applications, the letter is considered unsolicited.

The goal of a solicited application letter is to obtain an interview for a specific job position which the writer mentions in the letter. For example, the writer states that she is applying for the accounts payable clerk position that is open. When a person writes an unsolicited letter, she hopes that the company has any position, within a certain area, available. This letter is more general and the writer states that she is applying, for example, to any type of managerial position within the company.

Both types of letters are used to state details about the writer’s qualifications, background and skill. When writing a solicited letter, address the main point of the letter immediately without spending too much time on unnecessary details. An unsolicited letter must immediately catch the reader’s interest. Employers expect solicited letters when a job opening was announced, however, if no opening was posted, employers generally are not expecting to receive application letters. Therefore, an unsolicited letter must focus on benefiting the reader and the company. An unsolicited letter must also take action by the writer stating his intentions to call the company for a follow-up discussion regarding the application.

3. Writing an unsolicited application: The content applicants should create

In addition to the format of the cover letter, you should also pay attention to these points in the content of the unsolicited application:

With a convincing introduction, you arouse interest and make people curious. The introductory sentence should therefore be original and unique. Sentences such as “I hereby send you an unsolicited application for a suitable position as…” are not suitable. A better choice is, for example:

The CV of the unsolicited application does not differ from a conventional resume. Above all, it must be complete, comprehensive and clear. For the past five years, I've been in charge of missile testing and am accountable for 15 employees in my unit. My responsibilities include managing workforce issues, such as performance evaluations, providing employee guidance and day-to-day staff assignments.

Summarize Accomplishments

Construct your third paragraph as a synopsis of your achievements. Stick to accomplishments above and beyond your typical job duties. For instance, if your missile testing unit had 100 percent pass rate with zero failures post-release, state that in your third paragraph. Toot your horn in the third paragraph as you close the sale on your work skills and convince the reader that you're suitable for a job that's not even posted. End your third paragraph with a sentence restating your reason for writing.

My skills and qualifications would make me an asset to your company. I would very much like to join your team now or in the near future.

Encourage Contact

Close your letter with your contact information. If you're available at any time for an interview or if you're traveling to the city where the company is located, indicate that in your final paragraph. If you have the contact information for the person to whom you're writing, note your plans to call soon.

Use a respectful closing such as "Respectfully yours," or "Kind regards."

You will acheive better results if you address your letter to the person who has the authority to hire you. If you don't know the name and title of that person, call the HR department and explain the information you are seeking.

Georgia State sends out 1,500 mistaken acceptance letters, retracts them

Hundreds of high school students who were anticipating attending Georgia State University (GSU) , received a surprise when their acceptance letters were revoked.

About 1,500 students received an acceptance letter from the university last week. 

But the university said that the students, who had incomplete applications, received the letter by mistake.

“The Admissions department, sent a retraction communication," the university said in a statement according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . “We also have encouraged the students to finish their applications so they can be considered for admission.”

As many high school students anticipate the welcome letters from their prospective college or university, many students who received acceptance letters from GSU said they were heartbroken when the school reversed their decision.

Filled with excitement and crying tears of joy, one GSU applicant ran upstairs to tell her mother, Vanessa Peters, WSB-TV reported .

“I was upstairs, and she came running upstairs, crying in happiness,” Peters told the broadcast station. 

The following day, Peters’ daughter received the news that the acceptance letter was sent by mistake.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Peters said. “As a mother, I was heartbroken. I cried too.”

Peters told the broadcast station that her daughter's college essay detailed how she has dealt with some mental-health struggles. The back-and-forth with the school has caused her daughter, an aspiring veterinarian, to feel depressed again, she said.

With homes selling quickly these days and often receiving multiple offers, would-be buyers face stiff competition. One way to give yourself an edge is to get prequalified for a mortgage with one or more banks or other lenders. Prequalification is a relatively simple process and will not affect your credit score. Here is what you need to know and do.

To prequalify you for a mortgage, a lender will want some basic financial information. That could include, for example, your current income and how much you have saved for a down payment . The lender might also run a soft inquiry on your credit report . A soft inquiry provides an overview of your credit history but doesn't hurt your credit score because it's not part of a formal application for new credit.

Prequalification is not the same as pre-approval , although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. To pre-approve you for a mortgage, a lender will request more information and documentation and also run a hard inquiry on your credit report. A hard inquiry can affect your credit score, although usually only slightly. If you're approved, the lender will provide you with a pre-approval letter that states it is willing to issue you a mortgage for a specific loan amount. That can reassure home sellers that if they accept your bid you'll be able to come through with the money.

To become prequalified for a mortgage, follow these steps. 

1. Plan the Right Time to Get Prequalified 

Lenders that provide a prequalification (or preapproval) letter often put an expiration date on it. This could range between 30 and 60 days, so it's important to wait until you are ready to make an offer of purchase. This gives you the largest window for shopping before the letter expires.

2. Provide the Required Documentation

Lenders may require a variety of information in order to prequalify you for a mortgage. This might include proof of income, employment history, and an accounting of your debts. Documentation they might ask for includes:

  • Government-issued I.D.
  • W2s or 1099s
  • Tax returns
  • Bank statements 
  • Complete list of all monthly debts
  • Social Security number

Even if you don't need all of that documentation at this stage, you'll eventually have to round it up if you proceed to apply for a mortgage.

3. Consider Getting a Prequalification Letter From More Than One Lender

You're not obligated to get a loan from every lender that prequalifies you for a mortgage. Once you're ready to apply for a mortgage, you can shop the lenders that offered a prequalification letter to compare their loans, such as interest rates , closing costs , etc., to determine which one has the best deal. 

As mentioned, getting prequalified for a mortgage typically involves a soft inquiry on your credit report. That has no effect on your credit score. Many times lenders will do soft inquiries on your credit report—such as in deciding whether to send you an unsolicited credit card offer—without your even being aware of it.

While soft inquiries have no impact on your credit score, hard inquiries can have some. The implication of a hard inquiry is that you have applied for credit with that lender. Applying for too much credit can have a negative effect on your credit score, although it isn't necessarily a major factor. Lenders may take multiple loan or credit card applications to mean that you're in some sort of financial difficulty or in danger of getting over your head in debt.

Credit scoring models do make allowances, however, if multiple mortgage lenders do hard inquiries on your file within a short time frame, such as 14 days or 45 days, depending on the model. Here the assumption is that you're shopping around for a single mortgage, not that you plan to take out multiple ones.

Why Prequalification Doesn't Hurt Your Credit Score

Prequalification for a mortgage loan does not hurt your credit because it's a simple review of your credit history rather than a review tied to an application for credit. Essentially, lenders use this opportunity to see if you will be a good risk for a loan. 

There are many benefits to getting prequalified for a mortgage loan. These include:

  • You will know how much financing you could expect, which helps you determine your budget for a home. 
  • You can act quickly if you find a home you love. 
  • In a competitive market, being prequalified could give you an edge over home buyers who are not prequalified. Sellers will be more confident that you can follow through on a purchase offer because you have prequalified for the financing. 
  • Being prequalified can fast-track you to loan approval and closing on the home purchase. 

There are several myths associated with prequalification and credit. 

Myth: Your credit score will take a hit if you get prequalified.

Truth: Your credit score will not be impacted if you get prequalified. 

Myth: You are obligated to get a mortgage loan from the lender who prequalified you. 

Truth: You are free to shop around to find the best loan terms for you. 

Myth: A prequalification for a mortgage is the same as being approved for one. 

Truth: You will still need to formally apply for a mortgage loan and get approved before financing is available. Being prequalified is a good indicator that you are likely to be approved, but the lender might still reject your application based on additional information.

It's important to avoid damage to your credit score while seeking a mortgage. There are several ways you can do this. 

Check your credit. Review your credit reports prior to getting prequalified to ensure there are no errors or misinformation that could harm your chances. If you find any, report them to the relevant credit bureau and ask that they be corrected. By law you are entitled to a free credit report at least once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can obtain all three at the official website, AnnualCreditReport.com .

Avoid taking out new credit. You don't want to take out any new credit cards or other loans when shopping for a loan. That could lower your credit score and increase your debt-to-income ratio (your total monthly debt payments divided by your total gross monthly income), which lenders look at when they're deciding on your loan application.

Pay your bills on time. Payment history is the most important factor in determining your credit score, so late or missed payments can damage your score.

Shop for a mortgage within a short time frame. Multiple hard inquiries on your credit report could hurt your credit score if they are spread out over a period of time. However, if multiple mortgage lenders check your credit within a limited time frame, that is considered a single inquiry on your report and won't hurt your score.

What Are Some Specific Strategies to Avoid Hard Inquiries During the Mortgage Application Process?

Make sure all of the lenders you deal with will run only a soft inquiry for prequalification. In addition, hold off on applying for any new credit cards or loans. 

How Can I Monitor My Credit Score for Unexpected Changes During Home Buying?

Your credit score is not part of your credit report, but you can obtain it from a number of sources. Free credit scores are often available from banks and credit card companies as well as from some reputable websites. Bear in mind that there are a variety of credit scoring models and you probably have multiple scores. The score you obtain may not be identical to the one that lenders obtain, although it is likely to be reasonably close.

IRS Puts New Measures In Place For Tax Professionals To Protect Tax Data

With identity theft and refund fraud an ongoing concern, the IRS is implementing new security measures for tax professionals, including holds for Centralized Authorization File (CAF) numbers and new limits on requesting transcripts by phone.

The concept of finance and economics

A CAF number is a unique nine-digit identification number assigned to tax professionals and others who file third-party authorizations. The IRS assigns you a CAF the first time you file a third-party authorization with the IRS, and you use that number for your entire career—even if you switch firms.

Most commonly, CAF numbers end up on Form 2848. That's the form that allows tax professionals (and certain other third parties) to communicate with the IRS on behalf of taxpayers—including obtaining tax transcripts and other sensitive taxpayer personally identifiable information (PII).

Fraudsters have been using schemes, including unsolicited scam emails, to convince tax professionals to turn over their CAF number and other information for purposes of using the data to commit identity theft, refund fraud, and other crimes. These emails may look like they are from the IRS or a tax software company. Tax professionals who receive these unsolicited emails should report them to [email protected].

"Tax professionals continue to present a tempting target to identity thieves and fraudsters," said IRS Return Integrity and Compliance Services Director James Clifford . "With identity theft an ongoing concern, the IRS has taken additional steps needed to protect both tax professionals and their clients given the sensitivity and importance of the information involved. The IRS will continue working with the tax professional community on these issues to minimize burden on practitioners while also working to ensure the safety and security of this information."

The IRS has a new process for dealing with suspected compromised CAF numbers to address this issue. If your CAF number is flagged as potentially compromised, it will be placed into a suspended status pending further review and marked with a P. Once it's been placed into a suspended status, the IRS will send a letter to the CAF owner to confirm whether the number has been compromised—typically, that information will come from IRS Criminal Investigation (CI).

In the meantime, CAF owners won't be able to use those numbers when dealing with the IRS. The IRS Office of Professional Responsibility likened it to a "freeze" that a credit card company imposes when their fraud-prevention measures are activated.

Just because a CAF number has been compromised doesn't mean that the CAF owner has done anything wrong—the number could have been exposed due to a physical or digital data breach by a client or third party. In addition, the IRS says, there could be aspects of a practitioner's tax practice that, while legitimate, might trigger IRS red flags. There may be "false positives" that result in a suspended status pending further review.

If the investigation confirms that the CAF number is compromised, the CAF status will be recoded to "Confirmed Fraud," and the number can't be used to access taxpayer data. The IRS will work with the CAF holder to assign them a new CAF number and move their clients to the tax professional's new CAF number.

The IRS is also taking related security steps to change how tax professionals can order transcripts by phone through the Transcript Delivery System (TDS). TDS is an online service through the IRS website that allows authorized persons to obtain individual or business clients' tax transcripts and access the IRS Income Verification Express Service (IVES Wedbush ETFMG Global Cloud Technology ETF ) Application and Reports. IVES lets taxpayers authorize banks and lenders to access tax records when applying for a mortgage or a loan.

Tax professionals will need to call the Practitioner Priority Service (PPS) line to request that transcripts be deposited into their Secure Object Repository (SOR) mailbox. IRS employees on other phone lines—those outside of PPS—may not be authorized to provide transcripts through the SOR delivery method.

Tax professionals will need to pass enhanced authentication—that generally involves answering additional questions about your identity—as well as provide the Short Identification (ID) number associated with their SOR mailbox—before the transcript is provided. If the IRS cannot verify your identity, the tax transcripts will not be delivered to your SOR mailbox and will be mailed to the taxpayer's address of record.

The IRS says it is continuing to review and update processes to secure taxpayer and tax professional data.

Background:

Each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May (May 11, 2024) to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States.

The need is great, but anyone can help. We invite residents to join letter carriers and partner organizations in the fight to end hunger in our communities by participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Simply leave a donation of non-perishable food in a bag near the mailbox on the second Saturday in May, and our letter carriers will do the rest. Participation is completely voluntary.
