TPG business NBN plans review

TPG business NBN plans are only offered on a few key speed tiers but they do include some extras worth considering.

TPG Mobile Review - TPG Logo

TPG business internet ticks most of the right boxes when it comes to NBN speed tier choices, even if it starts with the bare-bolts NBN 12 and skips over the more versatile entry-level NBN 25. This means TPG’s business NBN plans are relegated to NBN 12, NBN 50 and NBN 100 speed tiers only, which may be only fast enough for smaller businesses.

Note that TPG offers multiple versions of each plan per speed tier, wherein you can opt for an 18-month contract and a cheaper $30 upfront fee for a PAYG landline phone service and NBN modem . Alternatively, go month-to-month for the same monthly fee but a steeper $129.95 upfront cost. You can also opt to pay more to bundle local and national phone calls (but no mobile numbers).

TPG business NBN plans value for money

A handful of contracted or no-contract options on a few speed tiers, albeit without the best pricing.

It wasn’t so long ago that TPG was offering a truly bare-bolts NBN 12 plan with 100GB of data but that’s been replaced with an unlimited-data variant. Still, we wouldn’t recommend that for any business unless they have the most basic of internet needs.

If that is your business, though, the true bare-bolts plan is the TPG NBN 12 Unlimited Plan, which has 12Mbps self-reported typical and comes with unlimited data. (Note that speeds for all TPG business NBN plans are confirmed post-activation for FTTB, FTTN and FTTC businesses).

In terms of the business NBN plans in our comparison engine, TPG is peerless with no competition for this speed tier.

From here, TPG strangely skips the NBN 25 speed tier and opts, instead, to offer plans in the most popular NBN 50 field. The NBN 50 XL Business Bundle comes with 50Mbps self-reported typical business hours download speeds.

In our comparison engine, there are cheaper alternatives from More Telecom, Aussie Broadband, Optus, iiNet, Vodafone and Exetel, granted not all of these providers offer an NBN modem and PAYG phone service. For comparison, check out the daily updating list of popular business NBN 50 plans below.

Finally, TPG’s NBN 100 XL Business Bundle has four variants, all of which have respectable 90Mbps business-hours download speeds and are inclusive of a landline phone service as well as an NBN modem.

Optus, Vodafone, More Telecom, Aussie Broadband and Exetel offer more competitive pricing and faster download speeds (except for Vodafone, which offers the same 90Mbps) as far as our the business plans in our comparison engine go. You should expect to see some or all of these alternatives in the daily updating list of popular business NBN 100 plans below.

Want to know which NBN providers scored top marks in our analysis? Follow the link below to find the best providers for value, speed and support in Australia.

Residential NBN plans are advertised in terms of a provider’s self-reported typical evening download speeds, whereas business NBN plans are marketed with a provider’s self-reported typical business-hours download speeds. While these speeds are increasingly the same, the time of day is different. For residential plans, the evening speeds relate to between 7:00pm and 11:00pm nightly, whereas business hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

The other thing to note is sometimes the NBN technology type that services your business address may impact your potential to reach the advertised speeds. Telstra, for instance, estimates expected download and upload speeds to your inputted business address prior to sign-up, whereas iiNet confirms Fibre-to-the-Building, Fibre-to-the-Curb and Fibre-to-the-Node speeds, but only once a connection is active.

TPG non-NBN business internet

TPG has other business internet plans, including NBN Enterprise Ethernet for large business and government organisations. Outside of NBN services, TPG also offers business customers fibre internet plans built on 250Mbps, 400Mbps and 1000Mbps packages. For businesses that want to go all out, TPG Dark Fibre can reach speeds of up to 10Gbps.

For other business-focused data services, TPG also offers e-Line, e-LAN, IP VPN and Wavelength. There are also SIP Voice, Inbound Voice, ISDN PRI and BRI as well as BizPhone products for businesses seeking bolstered landline phone support. TPG also offers several cloud services.

TPG business NBN features and perks

Whichever version of a TPG business NBN plan you buy per speed tier, you’ll get a few key inclusions. For starters, there’s a preconfigured NBN modem—either the TP-Link Archer VR1600v modem-router, Huawei HG658 modem-router or Huawei HG659 modem-router —which stops you from having to source your own and streamlines tech support if things go wrong. TPG business NBN plans also come with a static IP address , which is a great included extra for businesses that want to take advantage of virtual private network (VPN) connections , remote access configurations, server hosting and, compared to typical dynamic IP addresses, more reliable communication.

For the cheaper plan options per speed tier, you’ll also get a PAYG landline phone service, which can be upgraded to include unlimited calls to local and standard calls to national numbers. You can also pay extra to have this phone service include unlimited calls to Australian mobile numbers.

TPG business NBN customer support

If you follow the information in the critical information summary, you may be led down the garden path for attempting to contact TPG support via non-business ways. This means you’re competing with residential users seeking support via shared contact touchstones. You can reach TPG business support via phone by dialling 13 42 02 and following the prompts, which is available Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm based on Sydney local times.

Alternatively, you can email customer service at [email protected] for basic enquiries or via the [email protected] email address for tech support, but these are not business-specific email addresses. TPG can also be reached via social media on Twitter or Facebook, plus there’s also a forum for self-paced troubleshooting.

TPG NBN review

Does australia’s second-largest telco deserve your custom.

Tom's Guide Verdict

TPG appears to be a good NBN provider, delivering consistently reliable speeds and offering plans that present pretty good value. They're not the cheapest NBN plans around, but they are in line with the national average. Customer support does appear to have taken a downturn recently, but as with any real world customer account, reviews do need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Noteworthy TPG deals

Reliability, extra features, cancellation and hidden costs.

TPG, or TPG Telecom Limited, to give it its full name, is Australia’s second-largest telecommunications provider, following its merger with Vodafone that was completed in 2020. TPG is now home to a number of household names, including TPG (obviously), Vodafone, iiNet and Internode. While these brands all offer similar services, they are still separate entities, so for the purposes of this review, we’re going to focus solely on the NBN services provided by TPG itself.

As previously mentioned, TPG is Australia’s second-largest telco based on the number of active services, with just over 1.95 million users, representing a 22.4% market share, according to the most recent data published by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). However, this figure does include active services across all its brands, including Vodafone, iiNet and Internode. We haven’t been able to track down a figure for just active TPG services, but considering Optus sits in third place with around 1.14 million services, we can make a logical assumption and say that TPG alone will have similar or fewer services.

The internet service provider (ISP) advertises itself as offering “great value internet,” although when comparing its monthly pricing against the competition, it does sit towards the higher end of the budget spectrum. We’ll be investigating if this higher cost yields a better class of service later in this review.

We’ll also aim to determine if TPG, as one of the big three telcos alongside Telstra and Optus, is the one to go for if you want to sign with a household name.

  • NBN 50: $74.99p/m
  • NBN 100: save AU$10p/m for 6 months (then AU$89.99p/m)
  • NBN 1000: save AU$20p/m for 6 months (then AU$134.95p/m)

TPG supports all the NBN speed tiers , from Basic I (NBN 12) all the way through to Ultrafast (NBN 1000) and for plans NBN 12 to NBN 50, TPG advertises the maximum typical evening speed . On the NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans, TPG’s typical evening speed figures are 10Mbps and 40Mbps below the maximum, which is pretty competitive in the current NBN landscape.

It’s also pleasing to see TPG advertise a typical evening speed figure on its NBN 1000 plan of 450Mbps. Not all NBN providers in Australia quote a typical evening speed figure on this speed tier, as they have yet to obtain enough consumer data to formulate one. But, while TPG does advertise a figure, 450Mbps is among the slowest of currently advertised speeds. Telstra, Optus, Aussie Broadband and Origin, for example, all quote speeds of 600Mbps to 700Mbps.

TPG’s NBN plans, including regular pricing and typical evening speeds (correct at time of writing) are as follows:

  • NBN 12: AU$64.99p/m (Typical evening speed 12Mbps)
  • NBN 25: AU$69.99p/m (Typical evening speed 25Mbps)
  • NBN 50: AU$74.99p/m (Typical evening speed 50Mbps)
  • NBN 100: AU$89.99p/m (Typical evening speed 90Mbps)
  • NBN 250: AU$124.99p/m (Typical evening speed 210Mbps)
  • NBN 1000: AU$144.99p/m (Typical evening speed 450Mbps)

TPG offers a separate set of plans exclusively for customers who can connect via fibre-to-the-building (FTTB). These plans are facilitated by TPG’s own private infrastructure network, which was first proposed in 2013. This private network, which operates separately from the NBN, is available in select apartment buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

If you can connect to TPG’s FTTB service — you can only find out by checking your address on the TPG website , as opposed to NBN plan comparison sites such as WhistleOut — then there may also be the possibility of being able to connect to the NBN via another delivery method.

TPG offers just one speed tier, NBN 100, on its FTTB plans (with typical evening speeds advertised as 90Mbps) but within this, there are three bundles to choose from, each with a varying amount of phone calls included.

This writer recently connected to a TPG FTTB plan in an apartment building in Sydney and so far, has regularly been achieving speeds of 110Mbps, even during the peak period of 7pm — 11pm. He could have also connected to the NBN via hybrid fibre coaxial, but installation issues with strata put a halt on this.

As we’ve just covered, TPG offers plans across NBN speed tiers, including NBN 12. While you may think that not many people will want to connect to the slowest speed tier, according to the most recent market share data published by the ACCC, there are still well over 700,000 active connections. The total number of active connections on NBN 12 has been steadily decreasing since December 2020, but there is still clearly a market for it, so for TPG to offer its services is a positive.

TPG also offers services on the Ultrafast and Superfast tiers, and provides more contextual information in its NBN key facts sheet. It does say that maximum download speeds on both the NBN 250 and NBN 1000 tiers are indeed, 250Mbps and 1,000Mbps respectively. This is another positive mark against TPG, as some other telcos have changed the naming of the Superfast tier to NBN 500, with a theoretical maximum download speed of 500Mbps. We’ve previously speculated that this name change is to make advertised typical evening speeds of around 400Mbps look more attractive.

TPG does also indicate that the maximum download speed you’re capable of achieving on the NBN 1000 plan is dependent on the connection type you have. In the key facts sheet, the telco says that if you’re connected via hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) then you can only achieve a maximum download speed of 500Mbps. If you’re connected via fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) however, then your maximum is 990Mbps.

ACCC download speed data for April 2023

Are advertised speeds on any TPG plan achievable, though? According to the most recent data published by the ACCC, the answer is maybe. In the Measuring Broadband Australia report published in April 2023, TPG was found to deliver 98.3% of plan speeds during all hours and 97% during the busy hours of 7pm — 11pm.

While these figures aren’t quite 100%, when you compare them to the 10 other NBN providers monitored during the same period, they’re actually quite competitive. Only four providers achieve 100% or more during all hours, and three recorded percentages lower than TPG.

Overall, we’re happy with TPG’s performance when it comes to NBN plan speeds.

It’s fair to say that if you’re looking for the cheapest NBN plans around, then you’re not going to be interested in joining TPG. While the telco certainly isn’t the most expensive NBN provider, there are multiple telcos that are more affordable and, on paper at least, offer a similar (or even better) service.

Tangerine for example, is one of the most affordable NBN providers in the country, with all of its NBN plans coming in well below the monthly average. And, while there isn’t any official ACCC data to determine if it delivers advertised speeds, real world customer feedback for the service is largely positive.

Exetel is another to offer some of the most competitively-priced NBN plans. It too has been found to regularly deliver a reliable service and it also has a feature called Speed Boost Days, that allows you to temporarily boost the download speed of your service to the next available tier for free, five times a month. We feel this feature in particular provides great extra value.

It is pleasing to see introductory discounts on NBN 100 plans and higher, and we do also like the fixed-rate cost of NBN 12 — NBN 50 plans, as this removes the potential for any nasty surprises, if you were to forget when your six-month introductory offer was ending.

To provide some greater transparency and context in regards to how TPG’s NBN plans cost compared to other NBN providers, we’ve worked out the average monthly cost (following any introductory discounts) of all NBN plans available through WhistleOut at the time of writing. We’ve not included NBN 12 plans in this comparison.

  • NBN 25: Average monthly cost — AU$66.68. TPG monthly cost: AU$69.99
  • NBN 50: Average monthly cost — AU$75.74. TPG monthly cost: AU$74.99
  • NBN 100: Average monthly cost — AU$91.51. TPG monthly cost: AU$89.99
  • NBN 250: Average monthly cost — AU$118.68. TPG monthly cost: AU$124.99
  • NBN 1000: Average monthly cost — AU$144.38. TPG monthly cost: AU$144.99

As you can see from the information above, TPG’s NBN plans tend to hover around the monthly average and in some cases, such as with NBN 100, it’s actually cheaper. The two plans that appear to offer the least value are NBN 25 and NBN 250, but considering we’d expect the majority of customers to want to sign up for an NBN 50 or NBN 100 plan, we don’t necessarily see this as a negative.

Interestingly, the same plans on TPG’s subsidiary services iiNet and Internode are more expensive.

As with the majority of other NBN providers, TPG gives you the option of purchasing a preconfigured modem to use with its NBN service. This costs AU$109.95, which includes a AU$10 delivery fee. This is one of the more affordable options compared to other providers, although some — such as Vodafone and Optus — offer theirs on a payment plan, which you only need to pay if you cancel your service before a specified period of time has elapsed.

You do also have the option of using your own modem and TPG does offer an AU$100 rebate, but only if you buy the modem within 30 days before or after applying for a TPG NBN plan. This means if you’ve been holding onto a modem for a couple of years, you won’t be eligible for the modem rebate, as you need to provide proof of purchase.

To determine the reliability of an NBN provider, we can look at official information relating to NBN outages published by the ACCC, as well as real-world accounts from customers on forums such as Whirlpool and review sites including Product Review and Trustpilot .

On both review sites, TPG doesn’t score particularly highly, although reviews on Trustpilot are a mixture of both NBN and mobile services, which are consolidated to give an overall star rating. On Product Review, the majority of reviews relate to customer service and individual cases of customers trying to cancel their plans.

Conversely, there are also five star reviews for customer service, technical support and the speed of service, so it’s always best to take these reviews with a pinch of salt.

As for Whirlpool, we’re a little surprised to find only a small number of forum threads posted relating to download speeds. These threads appear to reflect individual cases of customers questioning subjects such as what speed they should be getting and intermittent latency spikes.

We have found a dedicated thread for TPG’s FTTB service and customers posting there have been mentioning a speed boost they’ve noticed on their service, which has seen it increase to around 110Mbps download (this is likely why this writer is experiencing similar speeds). There is also mention of TPG’s FTTB plan once costing AU$59.99p/m and not the current AU$89.99p/m (if only he’d signed up sooner).

Overall, it seems customers on the FTTB plan are satisfied with the service they receive.

ACCC data showing NBN outages from April 2023

As for official ACCC data relating to outages, it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows for TPG. The Australian consumer watchdog determines the average number of outages per day, along with the average duration. In the case of TPG, it experienced 0.4 outages per day on average. Only Launtel scored higher with 0.53. All other NBN providers monitored reported fewer outages, with iiNet and Optus coming joint first with 0.19.

Of TPG’s 0.4 average daily outages, 18.1% lasted 30-60 seconds, 27.7% lasted 1-3 minutes, 37.9% lasted 3-10 minutes and 16.4% lasted 10 minutes or more. This data indicates that should you experience an outage, it should at least be rectified relatively quickly.

There are actually some customer accounts of their internet going down, but being reconnected so quickly that they never realised there was an issue in the first place.

TPG doesn’t impose any data caps on any of its NBN plans.

A key factor in one’s decision as to which NBN provider to sign with is how it performs when gaming online, especially when you consider a good majority of gaming servers are located overseas. TPG doesn’t make any bold claims about gaming on its service, not even in the Key Facts Sheet. We’ve previously seen some other NBN providers mention which tiers are best for certain scenarios, such as streaming 4K Ultra HD content, having multiple users connected at once and indeed, online gaming. In TPG’s table, there’s no mention of the latter.

It is worth mentioning that the download speed of an NBN plan is unlikely to have any effect on online gaming performance anyway, as has been pointed out recently by the ACCC itself .

A key measure of an NBN provider’s online gaming prowess is latency and the ACCC recently determined that NSW and the ACT returned the best — or should we say, lowest — latency times in Australia. This doesn’t necessarily mean your NBN provider — TPG in this instance — will perform well in these states, but the data does prove that download speed has little to no effect.

We haven’t been able to find too much information from TPG customers relating to how well their service performs, but official ACCC data published in April 2023 found latency on TPG’s network was 10.3ms across all hours and 11ms during the busy hours. Superloop , Launtel and Exetel all performed better, and Aussie Broadband just pipped TPG, despite being one of the sole telcos to advertise itself as being a great option for gamers.

While some telcos may offer slightly better network optimisation and routing to overseas servers, where you live in Australia is going to have a big impact on the latency speed of your NBN connection. Our advice if you’re looking to sign up for a TPG NBN plan is to go ahead and do so, try it for a month and cancel it if you feel it doesn’t live up to expectations.

TPG NBN plans work on a no lock-in contract basis, so you will be free to leave whenever you wish.

As we alluded to earlier when referencing the FTTB plan, TPG also offers a phone line service which can be added on to any NBN plan. There are four tiers to choose from, starting with a pay as you go option. The three remaining tiers: Oz Talk, Big Talk and Extra Talk, all offer unlimited local and standard national calls. Oz Talk and Extra Talk include unlimited calls to Australian mobiles.

Big Talk includes 100 international minutes to call any landline or mobile number in another country. Extra Talk, however, includes unlimited calls to landline or mobile numbers in 15 countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

TPG phone bundle deals

Oz Talk and Big Talk both cost an additional AU$10p/m, while Extra Talk will set you back an extra AU$20p/m.

Pay as you go, Big Talk and Extra Talk are available as add ons to an FTTB bundle, costing an extra AU$10p/m and AU$20p/m, respectively.

TPG also has a range of mobile plans that make use of the Vodafone mobile network, that you can sign up for even if you’re not a broadband customer. But if you are, then you’re able to take advantage of monthly savings. Broadband customers are able to choose from 25GB, 45GB or 60GB monthly data plans, with the latter having the added benefit of a 5G trial.

These plans cost AU$12.50, AU$15 or AU$20p/m, respectively, for the first six months. They increase to AU$20p/m, AU$25p/m or AU$30p/m for broadband customers. You also get the option of adding unlimited international calls to 37 countries for an extra AU$5p/m.

Because TPG works on a no lock-in contract model, there are no cancellation fees to pay if you decide to cancel your service. However, it should be noted that TPG requires a 30-day notice period if you wish to cancel. TPG isn’t alone in requesting this — Exetel is another example — but it is something that has appeared to have caught out a few customers in the past.

TPG does mention the requirement for 30 days written notice in its terms and conditions and adds that you “must pay for charges for the service up to the end of the notice period.”

We reached out to TPG for clarification on the cancellation process, and the telco had this to say.

"When you request a cancellation, you will need to provide 30 days cancellation. It's up to you that you can keep the service active for the 30 days or you can disconnect service prior to the 30 days. No pro-rata credit on the 30 days notice if you disconnect earlier."

We've asked for follow-up confirmation on the wording of this statement, namely how a customer will be given the option of keeping or disconnecting their service, and if they do indeed need to pay for the 30 day period if they choose to disconnect.

We've also asked for clarification on how a customer is able to cancel, whether they have to call, email or if they can access an option through an online portal.

"If you have an active contract, 30 days notice is not required; but you are required to pay contract break fee instead (50% of the monthly charges that would have been paid between the date of cancellation and the end of the contract period)."

"The billing anniversary is not a factor on the 30 days notice, but it's a factor on the pro-rata credit. As TPG NBN service is prepaid service, any unused portion of the paid month will be credited and used towards the 30 days notice or contract break fee."

We’ve already brought customer reviews into discussion in this review, although these have related more to the reliability of the service rather than the customer support.

As we did mention earlier, however, the majority of negative reviews against TPG do in fact relate to customer service. On Product Review, for example, TPG scores a low 1.9 stars out of 5, based on 4,131 reviews. More than half of these are one star reviews. These reviews do also include those from customers on 5G home internet and home wireless broadband plans , which we know are more susceptible to issues than fixed-line NBN connections.

We’ve seen multiple reviews from customers saying they were able to sign up to a TPG plan relatively easily, but when it comes to cancelling, it’s an arduous process. Customers claim they are constantly transferred to different departments over the course of several hours and even then, they find they are still charged various fees after their service was supposedly cancelled.

As with any online review, these could be isolated cases, and we’d argue it’s fair to say customers are more likely to leave a review with negative comments than positive.

What we do like about TPG is that are multiple channels for you to find help you might need. There's a live chat feature, although this is predominantly reserved for sales enquiries. There's a well-populated support section, and there's also an option to ask TPG to call you back.

Overall, TPG presents itself as a good option, particularly if you live in an apartment building that is serviced by its private FTTB network. TPG’s regular NBN plans are all competitively priced too, and from the reports we’ve seen, coupled with official data from the ACCC, speeds are relatively fast and consistent.

TPG might not be the best option for online gamers, but for anyone else looking for an affordable NBN plan from one of Australia’s big three telcos, TPG comes across as a solid choice.

TPG Has Changed the Prices for Almost All of Its NBN Plans

Chris Neill Avatar

While it doesn’t happen frequently, internet providers will change up the costs of their NBN plans. TPG is one of the latest providers to do this, having refreshed the pricing for its NBN plans just over a month ago. Some of these NBN plans have seen a slight price increase, while the cost of the provider’s faster connections has seen a considerable decrease.

We’ve taken a look at TPG’s new NBN prices, while also comparing its faster plans with what other internet providers are offering.

Table of contents

Tpg’s new nbn pricing, comparing nbn 250 plans, comparing nbn 1000 plans.

Here’s how the prices for TPG’s NBN plans have changed:

  • NBN 12 – now $69.99 per month (up from $64.99 per month)
  • NBN 25 – now $74.99 per month (up from $69.99 per month)
  • NBN 50 – now $79.99 per month (up from $74.99 per month)
  • NBN 250 – now $94.99 per month (down from $124.99 per month)
  • NBN 1000 – now $104.99 per month (down from $144.99 per month

As you can see, some of TPG’s NBN plans have increased in price by $5 per month, while its two fastest connections –  NBN 250 and NBN 1000 – have seen a considerable price drop. Since these are the biggest discounts, we’ll look at how these NBN plans compare with what other internet providers are offering below.

While TPG’s NBN 100 plan is the only connection without a price change, the provider is currently running an introductory discount deal for it. Instead of paying $89.99, you’ll pay $79.99 per month for the first six months of your connection. Considering that the standard price of TPG’s NBN 50 plan is $79.99 per month, that’s a pretty cracking deal.

Despite TPG’s price drop, a few internet providers are offering introductory discounts which make them cheaper options in this speed tier.

Since TPG isn’t offering any form of discount, you’ll be paying a flat rate of $94.99 per month. However, when you compare this price to the full prices of other plans in this tier, TPG is one of the cheaper full-price options available.

If you want to keep your monthly internet bill as low as possible, we recommend changing your NBN plan every six months, so you can take advantage of the introductory discounts being offered by various internet providers. So, while TPG might not be the plan you start if you want to avoid paying $100 or more for a full-price NBN 250 plan , it’s a good option to swap to later on.

As far as NBN 250 deals go, Spintel has the overall cheapest NBN 250 option, which is being offered for $75 per month for the first six months. After this introductory period ends, you’ll be paying $85.95 per month. Spintel is reporting typical evening speeds of 211Mbps, which is a bit slower than TPG’s 232Mbps.

There’s also Southern Phone , which is offering its NBN 250 plan for $85 per month for the first six months of your connection. After this discount period ends, you’ll be paying $95 per month for this plan. What makes Southern Phone notable is that it’s reporting typical evening speeds of 250Mbps, making it ostensibly congestion-free .

Once again, TPG doesn’t have the cheapest plan on offer. However, it does have one of the cheapest full-price plans, making it a good option if you want to keep your monthly bill as low as possible in the long run . This may not be the plan you start with, but rather the one you swap to after you use up another provider’s introductory discount.

TPG’s NBN 1000 plan has typical evening speeds of 671Mbps, which makes this the third-fastest plan in this speed tier as well. For what it is worth, iiNet is also reporting typical evening speeds of 671Mbps but is a tad more expensive than TPG at $109.99 per month.

So what options are available if you want a cheaper and/or faster NBN 1000 plan?

Southern Phone currently has the cheapest NBN 1000 available. You’ll pay $95 per month for the first six months, and then $105 per month after that. Southern Phone is reporting typical evening speeds of 650Mbps, which isn’t too shabby either.

As far as the fastest NBN 1000 plan is concerned, Superloop is reporting typical evening speeds of 750Mbps. If you join Superloop , you’ll pay $99 per month for the first six months, and then $109 per month after that. The provider will also chuck in a free Amazon eero 6+ Wi-Fi router, as long as you stay connected for 18 months. If you leave Superloop within this period, you’ll need to pay a router clawback fee that’s worth $8 per remaining month (to a total of $144).

Telstra is reporting the second-fastest typical evening speeds of 700Mbps, but at $170 per month, this is the most expensive NBN 1000 plan available.

TPG is increasing its NBN prices – should you stay or switch?

A price hike is coming, so are there better and cheaper alternatives?

Young woman using laptop, looking annoyed

TPG has quietly announced it’s soon increasing the price of some of its NBN plans by AU$5 a month, citing the rising wholesale cost being asked by NBN Co as the reason behind the change.

In our TPG NBN review , we praised the provider for its affordable pricing and good value, particularly on its NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans, but the price hike means this may no longer be the case, with costs set to increase on TPG’s NBN 12, NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans.

While TPG has not set a definitive date for the price rise, it has said that “plans will soon increase by AU$5 a month”. That means if you are an existing TPG customer, you’ll need to pay AU$64.99 for NBN 12, AU$69.99 for NBN 25 and AU$74.99 for NBN 50 in the near future.

If you sign up to one of these TPG plans now, you’ll pay the current listed price, but expect to be contacted by TPG with a new monthly cost once the increase takes effect. That said, the cost of TPG’s NBN 100, NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans will not be changing.

It's unclear whether other TPG-owned NBN providers (such as Vodafone, iiNet and Internode) will also be increasing their NBN prices at this stage.

Should you stay or switch?

Like most NBN providers in Australia, TPG’s NBN plans come on a no lock-in contract, so you’re able to change plans with the provider, or switch to a different ISP entirely with fairly minimal fuss. To avoid exit fees, give TPG 30 days notice of your intention to switch telcos.

If you’re keen to avoid paying more for your internet bill, there are a number of cheaper NBN plans available if price is your top concern, and even some that outperform TPG for speed (according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission [ACCC]).

For a cheaper NBN 50 plan , we would recommend Spintel . It has an introductory price of AU$54 a month for your first six months, and an excellent ongoing rate of AU$64.95 thereafter. That puts this plan a good AU$10 under the average monthly cost (which is AU$74.97). On top of that, Spintel also reports a typical evening speed of 50Mbps.

An honourable mention must also go to Exetel , which is currently the top-performing ISP according to the ACCC’s broadband reporting. You can get an NBN 50 plan from Exetel for AU$53.95 a month over your first half year, with your monthly bill then increasing to AU$69.95 ongoing.

For a better-value NBN 25 plan , our top recommendation is Tangerine . For your first six months you’ll pay just AU$44.90 a month for the connection, before it increases to AU$59.90 ongoing. Given the average price of NBN plans in this tier is AU$66.32, Tangerine’s plan is quite comfortably the best overall value plan on offer at this speed.

Exetel also rates well in the NBN 25 tier, with a welcome price of AU$49.95, which moves up to AU$59.95 after your first six months on the plan.

If you’re currently on an NBN 12 plan with TPG, we’d strongly recommend switching providers. The planned price hike means you’ll soon need to fork out AU$64.99 for NBN 12, which puts it significantly above the average price of AU$57.78.

Exetel offers an NBN 12 plan for AU$49.95, which then jumps up to AU$59.95 after your first 12 months, but considering you can pay the exact same money for the telco’s NBN 25 plan, we wouldn’t recommend signing up. If you’re on an NBN 12 plan, weigh up whether you’re better off moving up to NBN 25 speeds.

Additional service

Most customers only need one service. Having an additional nbn service at your address means you’ll have to pay for an additional nbn plan and install a new modem.

If there are no additional available nbn lines at your address, we may need to install a new one, which may increase the time to complete your order, and there may be set up costs.

Each nbn line at your address could have different maximum speeds.

We'll ask at checkout about additional nbn services.

Are you sure you want an additional service?

If you order an additional service, we’ll need to install a new line, which means you may incur additional fees and delays. Ordering an additional service also means there will be more than one service at this address.

Ordering an additional service means that there will be more than one service at this address.

Which nbn speed tier is right for you?

Use this quick guide to help you work out which nbn speed tier best suits your business need.

50Mbps typical download and 17Mbps typical upload speeds

  • Between 9am-5pm, weekdays
  • Not available to most FTTN customers
  • Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including your in-premise setup and wiring and will be confirmed post-connection for FTTN/B/C
  • Available on all Fixed Line connections  (Excl. Fixed Wireless).
  • Available on ‘Telstra Business Bundle’ and ‘Telstra Business Broadband on nbn’ plans

Suitability

For businesses with up to 5 concurrent users. Simultaneous emails and browsing, social media, SD video streaming and conferencing as well as downloading and uploading of files.

Speeds experienced may be lower due to factors including in-home setup and wiring. An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers, we will confirm your maximum attainable speeds after connection.

100Mbps typical download and 32Mbps typical upload speeds

  • Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including your in-premise setup and wiring and will be confirmed post-connection for FTTN/B/C.
  • Available on FTTC/P, HFC and selected FTTN/B connections only.

For businesses with up to 10 concurrent users

Simultaneous emails and browsing, social media, SD video streaming and conferencing as well as downloading and uploading of files.

As well as facilitation of VPN supporting remote working activities.

Speeds experienced may be lower due to factors like your in-home set-up and wiring and will be confirmed post-connection for FTTN/B/C. Plan available to HFC, FTTP and some FTTN/B/C customers. 100Mbps typical download speeds not available to most FTTN customers.

Why can’t I get this plan?

We only offer speeds that we’re sure your connection can achieve.

The maximum speeds available at an address are dependant on the technology used to connect the premises to the nbn network. They will be the same no matter who you buy an internet plan from.

This may be due to one of 2 reasons:

  • The technology at your address is unable to support the speeds included in this plan – so you’d be paying for speeds that you can’t achieve. We only offer you plans based on the maximum upload and download speeds allowable.
  • At some addresses, we’re unable to estimate the maximum speeds available until you’re on your new plan (particularly if you’re a new customer). Before then, we can’t be sure that the nbn connection at your address can achieve this plan’s speeds. We do this to ensure you don’t pay for speeds you can’t achieve.

Once you’re connected, if we determine that your technology can support this plan’s speeds, we’ll let you know.

For personal use by approved customers in selected areas only. Subject to service qualification check. TPG FTTB is a data and phone service. You cannot share data or call inclusions between your TPG FTTB Plan and your TPG Mobile Plan and vice versa.

Minimum monthly spend is calculated as the first month’s plan fees plus $10 modem delivery fee and $20 Prepayment. Recurring monthly plan fees for included data are charged in advance for the following billing month, 7 days before the start of the month. Calls made that are not included in your plan will be charged by deducting usage charges from your Prepayment. You will be charged for using your plan from the point of service activation at your premises.

Total minimum cost excludes any additional costs that may be incurred for non-standard connection.

FTTB Connection

A technician appointment is required to install any required FTTB equipment at your address. An FTTB ready modem (which is WiFi and VoIP enabled) will be delivered to you after purchasing this plan. You require this modem to use your FTTB and TPG Voice service. Third party modems are not supported. You may require a Network Termination Unit (NTU) with your FTTB service. If required, we’ll supply this to you without charge. The NTU remains the property of Vision Networks and should not be removed from the premises once installed. We will advise you of the date and time of the installation appointment once you have received the modem. You should receive the modem within 2-5 working days after it has been dispatched from our warehouse. You or an authorised person over 18 years of age will be required to be home on the day of installation for a technician visit. You will need to supply your own standard phone handset (approved for use in Australia) to use the TPG Voice service.

The installation of FTTB will disconnect the current copper-line telecommunications service that is connected to your premises but will not necessarily cancel any existing phone or broadband services. It is your responsibility to contact your existing service providers to ensure that unwanted services are cancelled, otherwise you may continue to be billed for them.

Where your address has multiple copper lines, the FTTB installer will confirm with you that the correct copper- line has been transitioned. Not all the devices and services currently using your copper-line phone and internet service will be able to operate over FTTB. This may include back-to-base alarms, personal response systems, fax machines, EFTPOS or your modem. Please check with your manufacturer or provider to see if the device or service is compatible with FTTB. We are responsible for your service up to the Network Boundary Point, which is your side of the Main Distribution Frame (the telecommunications frame typically located in your building's communications room/basement). You are responsible for all cabling and equipment beyond that point.

Typical Evening Speed

Internet speeds on this plan are variable and you will typically experience much slower speeds than the maximum connection speed available on your plan.

Typical Evening Speed: This is the typical busy period download speed that the average consumer can expect to receive between 7pm and 11pm. It is not a guaranteed minimum speed and you may experience lower speeds during this period. The actual speeds you experience will vary on a number of factors such the technology used to deliver your service, interference, customer cabling and equipment, download source, quality and distance of in- building copper, the number of devices connected to your network and the content you access. Devices connected by Wi-Fi may experience slower speeds than those connected by Ethernet cable.

Voice Services

TPG Voice Service is delivered using voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The Voice Service supports fax to national numbers in the Telstra, Optus, AAPT and Primus PSTN network. Fax to international numbers is not reliable and VoIP based fax is not supported. The Voice Service does not support old dial up technology devices with built in modems such as EFTPOS, Back to Base Alarms and Foxtel Program purchase. These devices have been replaced by Internet Protocol (IP) enabled devices and many TPG customers are able to use EFTPOS, Back to Base alarms and Foxtel Program purchase through the internet provided that their devices are IP enabled. For further details on IP enabled devices contact your device supplier. TPG Voice Service also does not support analogue modems, Priority Assistance Scheme, calls to 19/1900, 0500 numbers and Universal International Freephone Numbers (UIFN).

The Voice Service requires a broadband connection and power to the Wi-Fi modem router supplied by TPG. If there is a broadband connection outage in your premises due to power or other faults, the Voice Service will not work and you cannot make phone calls including "000" emergency calls.

Once an FTTB plan is purchased, you cannot cancel either component (FTTB or Voice Service). Cancellation will cease both services. You cannot purchase either TPG FTTB or Voice Service as a standalone service. Your FTTB plan application will take approximately 10 working days to complete however in some cases can take up to 20 working days. Your FTTB plan application is considered complete once the service is installed at your premises.

At registration time, you can choose to port your existing number to TPG or have TPG supply a Direct Inward Dial Number (DID) for use with the Voice service. This number will be allocated to you based on the address which you provide us at the time of registration.

TPG will make use of your number as a reference point to charge for local calls. TPG will use its best endeavours to supply the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) with your address details for the purpose of emergency services (000) calling.

M Bundle Included Calls:

Charges for calls are not included in the FTTB M Bundle. Calls will be charged on a 'pay as you go' basis, deducted from your Prepayment. See: https://www.tpg.com.au/fttb#TPG-Voice-Service-Call- Rates-fttb-ftth for pay as you go call rates. Calls to 19/1900 numbers are not supported.

L Bundle Included Calls:

FTTB L Bundle allows you to make unlimited Local Calls (excluding 13/1300 numbers), unlimited Standard National Calls to Landlines and unlimited calls to Standard Australian Mobiles. Calls to 19/1900 numbers are not supported. The 100 International Minutes per month included in the L Bundle can be used to call International Landline and Mobile destinations (excluding calls to satellite phones) listed on our International Call Rates page: https://www.tpg.com.au/international-callrates-fttb-ftth . Standard per minute rates listed on our International Call Rates page apply after the first 100 minutes of International Calls and for calls to satellite phones. Unused included minutes for international calls expire at the end of each month. Charges for calls made that are not included in the bundle (e.g. calls to 13/1300 and Directory Services) will be charged at listed TPG rates by deducting usage charges from your Prepayment.

XL Bundle Included Calls:

FTTB XL Bundle allows you to make unlimited calls to Standard Landline and Mobile numbers in 15 countries (Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States), unlimited Local Calls (excluding 13/1300 numbers), unlimited Standard National Calls to Landlines and unlimited calls to Standard Australian Mobiles. Calls to 19/1900 numbers are not supported. Standard per minute rates listed on our International Call Rates page apply for International Calls to other countries and calls to satellite phones: https://www.tpg.com.au/international-callrates-fttb-ftth . Charges for calls made that are not included in the XL Bundle (e.g. calls to 13/1300 numbers, Directory Services and satellite phones) will be charged at listed TPG rates by deducting usage charges from your Prepayment.

This service is provided on the basis that you waive your Customer Service Guarantee (CSG) in relation to the FTTB Phone. You do not have to agree to the waiver, but if you do not agree, we have the right to decline to supply the service.

All TPG services are prepaid. You must pay the monthly recurring charges in advance, 7 days before the start of the next month. In addition, you must make a prepayment for usage that is not within the included value (if any) for the plan that you have acquired (“Prepayment”). Your initial Prepayment will be $20. After registration, you may nominate how much you wish to prepay but the minimum Prepayment is $20. The Prepayment will be debited from your nominated bank account or credit card. By acquiring and continuing to use the service, you agree to an automatic top up of your Prepayment. The top up will occur when the amount of Prepayment falls to below $10. When that happens, TPG will debit a sufficient amount from your bank account/credit card to restore your nominated Prepayment amount. If your usage is high, this can occur more than once per month. You authorise TPG to make such debits to your account/credit card.

If you do not exceed the Included Value and do not incur any charges that are excluded from your plan, there will be no automatic top-ups. We will send you messages about your usage and the debits during the month. Your service will become inactive if our attempts to debit credit card/bank account to top up your Prepayment are unsuccessful. If you do not use the Prepayment, it will be forfeited to us when you cancel the service. You agree that no bill will be provided for this service and that direct debiting of your account or charge to your credit card may occur notwithstanding that no bill is provided and that it may occur even though you may not have had the opportunity to check charges at least 10 working days before the debit.

FTTB detailed diagram

Phone Number & Porting

I have an active phone service. can i transfer my existing phone number across.

You can port (transfer) your phone number from Telstra, Optus, AAPT, Primus or Powertel to TPG. We may not be able to port your number in all circumstances, including where you fail to provide correct account details, or as a result of contractual obligations with your existing provider. If you are porting your number to TPG inbound calling to your number will not commence until porting is complete which will take a further 1 to 5 business days.

What is a DID number?

DID stands for Direct-In-Dial. If you choose or will be given a new phone number by TPG, TPG will assign a new DID phone number to you based on the address you will have installed the FTTB service. It is in a similar format to your existing telephone number ‹10 digit number›.

Can I choose my DID phone number?

No. If you have chosen to receive or will be receiving a new number from TPG, your phone number will automatically be assigned to you based on the address provided for the installation.

Will TPG deliver the FTTB service to an existing phone wall socket in my premises?

Can i use my existing telephone handset and phone wall socket for the tpg voice service.

You can use your current telephone handset, however it will have to be plugged into the VoIP port on the supplied Wi-Fi Modem Router using a standard telephone cable.

To be able to port my number, what information do I need to provide?

You will need to provide your current Account Number provided by your current phone provider. This can be found on any bill you receive from your phone provider for your phone service. Providing an incorrect Account Number may result in delays with the porting process and lengthen the period in which you will not be able to receive any incoming phone calls.

Can I keep the phone number assigned by TPG when I no longer want to have the TPG Voice service with TPG?

You need to check with the new or gaining provider if they are able to port from TPG.

While my phone number is being ported to TPG, can I still make outgoing calls?

Yes, as soon as TPG FTTB Bundle service has been installed, you will be able to make outgoing calls from your TPG Voice service. TPG will charge you for any call usage. However, inbound calling to your number will not commence on the TPG Voice service until porting is completed which will take an additional 1 to 5 business days after your TPG FTTB service is installed.

What is TPG Voice service and how reliable is this service?

TPG Voice is delivered using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). It works similar to a standard home phone. It is delivered via TPG's own network so you can expect a high quality of service and enjoy great call rates and super fast FTTB broadband on a single connection.

Once the TPG Voice service is installed, are there any services that will not work on my line?

TPG Voice does not support old dial up technology devices with built in modems such as EFTPOS, Back to Base Alarms and Foxtel Program purchase.

Can I watch Foxtel if I have TPG FTTB Service?

Yes, watching regular Foxtel programs is not affected by TPG FTTB service. Regular Foxtel programs use an entirely separate connection from your FTTB or TPG Voice connection.

Does Foxtel on Demand or program purchase work with TPG FTTB service?

If you have the latest Foxtel set top box, you can purchase and download programs using the Ethernet connection in the set top box to connect via TPG FTTB. This is even better if you have TPG Unlimited FTTB plan as you do not have to worry about your Broadband monthly usage quota when you download Foxtel on Demand programs.

Once I register for FTTB Bundle, can I cancel the FTTB or TPG Voice component?

No, FTTB or TPG Voice cannot be cancelled separately. Since FTTB is a bundle plan, cancellation will cease both services.

Can I have TPG's Voice Service only (without FTTB)?

No, TPG Voice Service can only be ordered as a bundle with FTTB.

Do I need to call my current provider to cancel my existing home phone service or Internet?

Once the FTTB service has been activated, if you currently have any existing services like phone or internet at your premises, you will need to contact your current provider to have these services cancelled to ensure you do not receive any further bills. TPG recommends you check with your current phone and/or internet service provider regarding contractual commitments and termination/disconnection fees associated with your current services. TPG is not responsible for these charges. If you are also porting your existing phone number to TPG, do not cancel your phone service until the number has been ported.

Usage and Charges

How am i charged for tpg fttb bundle plans.

Monthly access charges are billed monthly in advance.

Prepayment: All TPG services are prepaid. You must pay the monthly recurring charges in advance. In addition, you must make a prepayment for usage that is not within the included value (if any) for the plan that you have acquired.

Can I receive Reverse Charge Calls/Collect Calls using TPG's Voice service?

No, TPG Voice does not support the receiving of Reverse Charge Calls/Collect Calls.

Can I view my TPG Voice call usage online?

Yes. You can view your outgoing call usage online by logging into 'My Account' at www.tpg.com.au/myaccount .

Can I use TPG Voice for local calls only and choose another provider for other calls (national long distance, international, calls to mobiles)?

No. TPG Voice is a full service including line rental, local, national, international and mobile calls. Customers must not preselect to another carrier or use the TPG Voice service to make override calls on a third party network.

Will I receive paper bill?

No. You can view the current and previous bills online by logging into the My Account section on the TPG website. It's simple and secure. Select 'Your Account Statement' under 'Account Management'.

How much does it cost to make calls?

For a complete list of call rates click here .

Can I call emergency numbers with my TPG Voice Service?

Yes, with TPG Voice Service you are able to call 000. It is important to know that TPG Voice service requires a broadband connection and power to both the Wi-Fi modem router and the Network Termination Unit (if applicable) supplied by TPG. If there is a broadband connection outage in your premises due to power or other faults, the TPG Voice service will not work and you cannot make phone calls including "000" emergency calls.

How do the mobile and national call caps work?

Take advantage of some fantastic savings with our National Cap and National Mobile Cap.

National Call Cap: Charges are capped at $2 for up to the first 20 minutes per call. Per minute national call charges apply thereafter (charged per 30 seconds)

National Mobile Call Cap: Charges are capped at $2.48 for up to the first 20 minutes per call. Per minute national mobile call charges apply thereafter (charged per 30 seconds)

For example, if you make a mobile call that lasts 40 minutes, charges are: First 20 minutes ($0.39 x 20 minutes + $0.39 call connect) = $8.19 however TPG will only charge you $2.48 Next 20 minutes ($0.39 x 20 minutes) = $7.80 Total charge: $10.28

If you make a national call that lasts 7 minutes, charges are: ($0.25 x 7 minutes + $0.39 call connect) = $2.14 however TPG will only charge you $2.

76,000 Aussies ditch Telstra, TPG NBN plans: Should you join them?

tpg business plan nbn

Aussies are turning their back on the bigger NBN providers and changing their download speeds.

Fresh figures from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) NBN Wholesale Market Indicator Report show Aussies are searching around for a better deal on their NBN plans.

According to the report, 2 of Australia's largest NBN providers, Telstra and TPG , lost 76,000 customers during the June quarter.

At the same time smaller providers Vocus (responsible for Dodo and iPrimus) and Aussie Broadband have added more than 62,000 new customers.

Aussies push for broadband plans that match their needs

Not only are consumers looking for a new provider, they are also changing the speed of their NBN plans.

The report points out that the NBN 50 speed tier is falling in popularity, with 44.2% Aussies signed up to it compared to 52% from the March 2023 quarter .

It also found that in the June 2023 quarter:

  • 650,000 Aussies have changed from NBN 50 to another speed tier since the March quarter 2023
  • The number of Aussies with an NBN 25 plan increased by around 200,000
  • NBN 100 reached nearly 450,000 extra subscribers

Finder's tech expert Angus Kidman points out some are changing their download speeds due to higher costs.

"Broadband's essential for most of us, but when cost-of-living pains really bite, paying less is worth exploring. If you're not a heavy internet user and funds are tight, dropping a speed tier can help you save," he says.

"But remember, a big drop in speed will feel painful. Compare first - you may find you can keep your current speed while paying less."

With 55,000 premises also upgraded to higher capacity fibre to the premises (FTTP) services in the June quarter, that could likely explain people stepping up a speed tier.

FTTP is considered the fastest and most reliable NBN connection.

Should you join the 76,000 Aussies switching plans?

Like with most products, it doesn't pay to be loyal to your broadband provider.

In fact, if you've been on a plan for a while now, you should compare NBN plans and switch for potentially big savings.

If you're with one of the larger NBN sellers like Telstra, TPG or Optus, chances are you're missing out on savings offered by some smaller providers.

Finder has highlighted a few smaller providers below with NBN plans that are cheaper than the equivalent from Telstra, Optus or TPG.

Not only are these plans good value, but they offer good performance, as their typical evening speeds are the maximum available for their respective tiers.

Searching for new deals like these is likely for the growth of Australians switching plans according to ACCC commissioner Anna Brakey.

"The sustained growth of smaller broadband providers shows that there is continued demand from consumers for innovative and competitive services," Brakey says.

If you're looking for even more bang for your buck, check out the full list of cheap NBN plans .

Hi I am elderly 78yrs and get muddled sometimes, I am with TPG for my mobile and IPRIMUS for internet I would like free phone calls with mobile and unlimited internet could I roll these together with one provider and if so who would be the best for me, the trouble is I keep forgetting passwords and this would be one less.

Avatar

Hi Joan, Both TPG and iPrimus offer the chance to bundle mobile and internet together, so you could go with one of your existing providers if you wanted to have your mobile and internet together. Other providers that allow you to bundle mobile an internet together include Aussie Broadband, Australia Post Broadband, Flip, MATE, Spintel, Superloop, Telechoice, Vodafone and Westnet. You would have to check with the providers to see if both their phone and internet plans meet your needs before signing up for both though. Hope this helps.

NBN Co Wants to Turn Your NBN 100 Plan into NBN 500

Zachariah Kelly Avatar

Holy heck, yes please .

The company, which manages the NBN, says that it will only work on homes with HFC or are fitted with fibre (FTTP), which makes sense given that NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans are currently only available to such eligible addresses – 500Mbps is a bit difficult for copper-heavy homes serviced by FTTC and FTTN to handle. Don’t fret, though – you may be eligible to upgrade your home internet to access these speeds (and NBN Co is looking to relax the requirements for the upgrade).

500mbps NBN: What’s actually changing under this proposal?

To underscore how big a jump from 100Mbps to 500Mbps would be for you, on a standard ‘Home Fast’ NBN 100 plan, the company used a Fortnite patch as an example – about 25GB. At current speeds, this would take around 36 minutes to apply. On the proposed speeds, it could be installed in as quick as seven minutes – or even down to five minutes on faster-proposed plan changes.

tpg business plan nbn

Within the same proposal, the company said that it wants to increase the speed of its ‘Home Superfast’ 250/25 (download/upload) plan to up to 750/50 speeds, and increase ‘Home Ultrafast’ 500-1000/50 plan to 750-1000/50-100.

“The average household now consumes 443 gigabytes per month across 22 internet-connected devices. We predict that average will grow to 33 connected devices by 2026 and 40 by the end of the decade,” Chief Customer Officer at NBN Co Anna Perrin said.

“Yet despite this explosion in data usage, many customers have remained on the same broadband plan for years. Our network monitoring suggests that some customers are potentially hitting their maximum speed on a regular basis. These customers may enjoy a better internet experience on a faster speed tier.”

Naturally, these changes would come in to accommodate modern internet usage. Our engagement with media, be it news, streaming, gaming, social media, or broadly anything entertainment-wise, is quite dependent on our internet access – and that’s without considering the needs we have for online access when we’re working from home.

The company estimates that nine million homes would see the benefit of the upgraded speed tiers by December 2024 and potentially up to 10.2 million by December 2025.

What do retailers think?

NBN Co wants to increase the faster speeds within the next year. An industry consultation paper has been released, with the company seeking retailer input (for example, from the likes of Telstra and TPG). The consultation paper closed earlier this month.

“At Aussie we’re incredibly proud of the great investments in our retail network to improve the experience for customers adopting FTTP, and NBN Co’s announcement has made that early investment all the more essential as Australians take the next step into a high-speed future. It’s essential, however, that these announcements are paired with more investment in fixed broadband for regional Australians so the digital inclusion gap isn’t widened further,” Aussie Broadband Group managing director Phillip Britt said in a statement.

“While Aussie has a very strong share of the Fibre Connect market we still need to understand what impacts this will have for competition. By switching customers over at the wholesale level, smaller RSPs may miss out on the opportunity to compete for those customers which could harm retail-side innovation in the Australian broadband market.”

That’s actually a really good point – switching from 100Mbps to 500Mbps is a huge jump, and what we’re talking about here is a complete shakeup of the speed packages NBN offers, not the addition of speed packages that retailers like Aussie can offer. As far as competition goes, though, it just bumps up the speed of a product, while not providing any further plan opportunities for competition.

TPG Telecom has also weighed in with a statement. “Enabling faster download speeds for NBN customers is a positive opportunity for those who can access it. However, we must not overlook customers who cannot afford pricier, high-speed NBN plans, or the associated costs of upgrading equipment to take full advantage of these new speeds,” a TPG Telecom spokesperson said. “If NBN was genuine about addressing affordability and high-speed access for all Australians, it would extend these benefits to the 70 per cent of NBN customers on its entry-level 12, 25, and 50Mbps plans. In this cost-of-living crisis, it would be disappointing if only those with the financial means to access high-speed NBN plans reaped the benefits of these upgrades.”

Optus has also provided Gizmodo Australia with a statement. “We welcome NBN’s move to improve customers’ access to higher speeds,” Optus vice president of government and regulatory affairs Andrew Sheridan said. “This proposal is something Optus has long called for and is consistent with our focus on improving the connectivity experience for all Australians in this rapidly evolving digital world. We look forward to working with the NBN to understand how these higher speed tiers can be delivered to all households.”

And finally, Telstra has also weighed in with a comment. “We are always supportive of any initiative that provides an improved experience for our customers. We look forward to further discussions with NBN Co during the consultation period as we assess the impact on Telstra and our customers,” a Telstra spokesperson said.
