NYU Steinhardt has climbed to the #4 ranking on the U.S. News & World Report's list of the best graduate schools of education.

New York University’s  Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development  has taken the #4 spot in the annual ranking of the best graduate schools of education by U.S News & World Report for 2023.

NYU Steinhardt has held a spot among the top 10 schools of education in the United States for the last five years and is currently the highest ranked school of education in New York.

"This latest ranking acknowledges our reputation as an institution dedicated to artistic and academic excellence and affirms our position as a national leader among our peers," says NYU Steinhardt Dean Jack H Knott.

U.S. News & World Report ranks College in top 50 Best Graduate Programs in Education

The Purdue University College of Education remains in the top 50 of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Education Schools for Graduate Programs in Education .

The rankings, released Tuesday (Apr. 25), show Purdue’s College of Education at No. 49 in the 2023-2024 graduate education program rankings, as No. 2 in Indiana, and as No. 38 among public colleges of education.

“Our continuing high ranking by U.S. News and World Report in the top 18% of graduate education schools demonstrates our high quality programs, outstanding faculty, dedicated staff, and hard-working students,” said Wayne E. Wright, associate dean for Research, Graduate Programs, and Faculty Development.

U.S. News & World Report  is a recognized leader in ranking colleges, programs, and graduate schools. Each year, Purdue’s College of Education strives to continually improve its programs and relies on the rankings to help promote and serve as a recruiting tool for prospective students seeking a quality online educational experience.

Darden College rises up the ranks of US News Best Grad Schools for Education

Old Dominion University and the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies has again been recognized as a top-tier institution in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report's 2023 Best Graduate Schools - Education Schools rankings released today. ODU moved up the ranks to be tied for 89th out of 274 schools of education around the country and one of only eleven in Virginia - a 30-place jump from the 2022 ranking.

The US News & World Report's rankings signify excellence across a variety of criteria, including quality of faculty, research, funding, enrollment, and job placement for graduates and alumni, which help potential students make informed decisions to choose the best institutions for their education. ODU's colleges and programs have a long history of high ranking in the annual reports, a direct reflection of the dedication and efforts of faculty and staff.

Interim dean of the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies said, "We are proud of the significant gains in our rankings over the past year and thrilled to be recognized for the impressive work in which our faculty and staff are engaged to prepare quality educators and advance the field of educator preparation," shared Tammi Dice, interim dean for the College. "Despite COVID, we have been able to add new teacher education degrees and concentrations and our enrollments are strong across all programs. We are deeply committed to working with our partner school divisions to address critical teacher shortages, diversify the teacher pipeline, and prepare culturally responsive educators. We are pleased to have these efforts acknowledged by U.S. News and World Report."

Graduate programs in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies boast a low doctoral student-faculty ratio of 1:6 and a total current graduate enrollment of more than 450 students. The Darden College of Education and Professional Studies has the highest graduate student enrollment at ODU.

"We are honored to receive this recognition," said Maggie Barber, associate dean for educator preparation and assessment. "Our rankings reflect our faculty's national and international reputation for their scholarship and grants, the strength of our graduate students, and the breadth and quality of our academic programs."

Of note is that the 2022 Virginia Teacher of the year was an alumni of ODU and a current graduate student with Darden College. Recently, the College was recognized by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) for its commitment to diversity throughout its teacher education programs.

Last year, U.S. News & World Report listed 20 of ODU's graduate programs and two colleges as among the best in the nation. The University has also been recognized as among the top 15% of U.S. colleges for overall diversity by College Factual.

For the second year in a row, Penn’s Graduate School of Education sits atop the U.S. News & World Report ’s rankings for graduate schools of education . After tying for the #1 spot last year, Penn GSE has now moved into sole occupancy of the top spot.

“To be ranked in the top position for the second year in a row is an honor, and I simply could not be more proud of the exemplary work being done by Penn GSE’s faculty, staff and students — especially over the turbulence of the past two years,” said Penn GSE Dean Pam Grossman . “This ranking speaks to the passion and resilience of our community and our efforts to ensure that access to a quality education should be available to everyone.”

This marks Penn GSE’s seventh consecutive year in the top five. This year also marked the 15 th in a row that Penn GSE’s leadership in education policy and higher education were reflected by top-10 positions in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, as the  Education Policy Division  was once again ranked #5 and the  Higher Education Division entered a two-way tie for #4 in their respective categories.

Penn GSE’s excellence was also highlighted through rankings in  Curriculum and Instruction (fourth year in a row), Education Administration  (fifth year in a row), and Elementary Teacher Education (second time in three years).

With the final days of 2023 approaching, we look back at some of the most inspiring stories, videos, and conversations of the calendar year. In this list, you’ll find content that drew many readers or got a lot of likes, while others are pieces we simply loved writing and producing. In December, history teacher and author Wade Morris sat down with the Harvard EdCast to talk about a subject not often talked about: the history of report cards . As EdCast producer Jill Anderson says of the episode, “There’s something really fun and interesting about how looking into the history of education tells us so much about where we are now. This episode gave me so much more insight into the origin of report cards and how that has truly shaped the education system and in a way holds us captive.”

That time we created a Spotify playlist to celebrate the new incoming class

Formal letters and emails with exploding confetti are nice, but what better way to say “congratulations, you got in!” to our newest class of admits than giving them the gift of amazing music ?

The quote that made us feel hopeful 

From Azucena “Zuzu” Qadeer, a student at Beacon High School in New York City and an Education Now webinar guest speaker, on how to help young people see that they can make a difference when it comes to climate change : “I was hopeless for a really long time, and it was all kinds of depressing but starting small was helpful for me. I started … focusing on what I could do in my community to benefit the Earth. In terms of empowering young people, you need to show them they are part of a community, and they can make a change in their community, because oftentimes you don’t see change in the big earth.”

The story that left us surprised but not surprised

Our coverage of a fall Askwith event focused on the impact wealth has on college admissions at highly selective private colleges , and while not completely new news, the data shared left us shaking our heads. It also left us more determined than ever to write about inequity and gaps in education.

This video interview made math sound almost fun

This summer, our video team followed alum Grace Kossia, Ed.M.’17 , around New York City, where she works for the playfully named nonprofit called Almost Fun. Last year, Almost Fun helped 1.5 million middle and high school students with free, online math lessons that use non-math concepts students are familiar with, like explaining “slope” using an illustration of a roller coaster.

The winner of this year’s best headline

Writing headlines isn’t always easy, but this one from a story in the fall/winter 2023 issue of Harvard Ed. magazine about how a winning high school football team and determined principal helped keep their tiny school from closing almost wrote itself: “ Saved by the Ball .”

2023 was the year of the AI takeover

Stories on AI intelligence dominated in 2023, both in the volume produced in our office and in reader interest, including a Usable Knowledge piece about how educators need to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom . “You have to stop thinking that you can teach exactly the way you used to teach when the basic medium has changed,” said Lecturer Houman Harouni. “Where we want to get to” with AI “is a place where you’re dancing with it, dancing with robots.”

Speaking of AI, MIT’s Anant Argawal reminded us of our fear of calculators

In September, Anant Argawal, founder of edX, calmed our nerves when he talked on the Harvard EdCast about AI . “This is not scary,” he said. “I think the fear has come from not knowing about the unknown. When calculators first came out, people were concerned. Oh my God, what's this thing? I remember my dad, he would complain. He was a professor of pathology in a medical college. And he said, "I don’t know what this is, what is this thing, you have to punch these numbers. Just give me paper and a pencil.” But once he overcame his fear, he was able to use calculators. I think using AI is as easy as using a calculator. In fact, it’s easier, because you can talk to it like a human being. You don’t have to use a finger to hunt and peck.”

University of Utah tops in games development education

The division of games’ undergraduate programs ranks no. 1 among public universities and its graduate programs no. 2 in latest 2024 princeton review rankings.

In a nondescript brick building that used to house the University of Utah’s law school library, interdisciplinary teams of students in the university’s games programs are huddled in groups working toward an approaching deadline to complete video games that will launch at a public event on campus on April 24.

Students develop every aspect of the games from initial pitches to their launch, which Michael Young, chairman of the university’s top-ranked Games Division, likens to opening night of a theatrical production.

“It’s really remarkable for our students, because many of them have never seen people play the game that they’re making. It’s like opening night for a play when you go up on stage and people gasp or react and you can hear them in the audience,” Young said.

“They (students) can stand to the side and see a kid whose parents are dragging them away and they won’t leave because they’re playing their game that they made. It’s really moving, the first moment that they see the power of their creative activity,” he said.

The University of Utah’s Games Division stands at the forefront of game development education. Princeton Review recently ranked the school’s undergraduate games programs No. 1 and its graduate programs No. 2 among public universities worldwide. Utah’s undergraduate program moved up two spots from last year’s rankings while the graduate program climbed three positions.

Young said the rankings are cause for celebration because the division’s programs are relatively new to the campus and they have grown exponentially.

“We have worked really hard. Part of that is because we’ve had remarkable enrollment growth. We created our undergraduate major in 2017, and in 2021, it was the 10th largest major on campus, so our growth it’s been phenomenal. We have about 1,100 undergraduate students and during that time, we haven’t really grown in faculty. So the faculty have just taken on more and more work and been remarkably successful. So it was terrific to see that ranking, the recognition of the faculty and the staff. It just really reaffirmed that the work that we do here is excellent,” he said.

There are about 140 students in the graduate programs, among them Benjamin Fellows, who will graduate later this spring. Fellows said he chose the University of Utah for its favorable tuition rates, proximity to his hometown of Las Vegas, but primarily, the strength of its games programs.

“The master’s program that gave me the opportunity to just be a producer so now I’ve got like a half dozen games or so” that he has produced, said Fellows, who also earned his undergraduate degree in games.

Fellows is leading a team of graduate students developing a puzzle adventure game called Cardboard Chronicles, which features “a kid that has been sucked into a cardboard world trying to find the way out, helping little strangers he meets along the way,” he explained.

The team of artists, engineers, designers, producers and story tellers work collaboratively on the game, each contributing their respective talents.

Fellows, who also has a minor in music, wrote the score for the game and created its sound effects.

Asked what it is like to bring a game from the pitch stage to launch, Fellows said it’s “‘exhilarating’ comes to mind but it’s something that you never really quite get used to. Here’s this idea we have and now we’re going to be releasing it on the Switch in a couple of months. Like that’s insane to us.”

Another attractive aspect of the program is that by and large, the students own the games they create. As of April 24, there will be 149 published games produced by the programs’ students, the vast majority of the games published on the video game distribution platform Steam.

The academic programs integrate art, humanities, social science and computational research. Aside from games for fun and amusement, they also serve pragmatic purposes such as games for health, learning and training, modeling and simulation.

As an industry, global revenue generated by the gaming industry is greater than the combined global revenue of the music and movie industries combined.

Young said that portends a bright future for the program’s graduates.

Princeton Review’s recognition of the preparation games students receive at Utah is both a credit to the Game Division’s hard-working and nimble faculty and staff, and its talented students, he said.

“How terrific to be recognized for the astounding skills and passion that our students bring to game making and the impact that they’re having on the industry after they graduate. The dedication and skill of our faculty, and the support of our amazing staff, all build a community of excellence here that prepares our graduates for success with knowledge and skills they can apply right away. They leave our program ready to change the world with the games they make,” Young said in a statement.
