Here is an example of a research summary:

Summarising , or writing a summary, means giving a concise overview of a text’s main points in your own words. A summary is always much shorter than the original text.

There are five key steps that can help you to write a summary:

  • Read the text
  • Break it down into sections
  • Identify the key points in each section
  • Write the summary
  • Check the summary against the article

But it’s often appropriate to summarize a whole article or chapter if it is especially relevant to your own research, or to provide an overview of a source before you analyse or critique it.

You should read the article more than once to make sure you’ve thoroughly understood it. It’s often effective to read in three stages:

  • Scan the article quickly to get a sense of its topic and overall shape.
  • Read the article carefully, highlighting important points and taking notes as you read.
  • Skim the article again to confirm you’ve understood the key points, and reread any particularly important or difficult passages.

There are some tricks you can use to identify the key points as you read:

Other types of articles may not be explicitly divided into sections. But most articles and essays will be structured around a series of sub-points or themes.

Keep in mind that a summary does not involve paraphrasing every single paragraph of the article. Your goal is to extract the essential points, leaving out anything that can be considered background information or supplementary detail.

In a scientific article, there are some easy questions you can ask to identify the key points in each part.

If the article takes a different form, you might have to think more carefully about what points are most important for the reader to understand its argument.

In that case, pay particular attention to the thesis statement —the central claim that the author wants us to accept, which usually appears in the introduction—and the topic sentences that signal the main idea of each paragraph.

Now that you know the key points that the article aims to communicate, you need to put them in your own words.

To avoid plagiarism and show you’ve understood the article, it’s essential to properly paraphrase the author’s ideas. Do not copy and paste parts of the article, not even just a sentence or two.

The best way to do this is to put the article aside and write out your own understanding of the author’s key points.

Let’s take a look at an example. Below, we summarise this article , which scientifically investigates the old saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.

An article summary like the above would be appropriate for a stand-alone summary assignment. However, you’ll often want to give an even more concise summary of an article.

For example, in a literature review or research paper, you may want to briefly summarize this study as part of a wider discussion of various sources. In this case, we can boil our summary down even further to include only the most relevant information.

When including a summary as part of a larger text, it’s essential to properly cite the source you’re summarizing. The exact format depends on your citation style , but it usually includes an in-text citation and a full reference at the end of your paper.

  • What were the key findings? – This can be the most critical part of the process. What did we find out after testing the hypothesis? This section, like all others, should be just facts, facts facts. You’re not sharing how you feel about the findings. Keep it bias-free.
  • Conclusion – What are the conclusions that were drawn from the findings. A good example of a conclusion. Surprisingly, most people interviewed did not watch the lunar eclipse in 2022, which is unexpected given that 100% of those interviewed knew about it before it happened.
  • Takeaways and action points – This is where you bring in your suggestion. Given the data you now have from the research, what are the takeaways and action points? If you’re a researcher running this research project for your company, you’ll use this part to shed light on your recommended action plans for the business.

In this post, we will guide you through all the steps required to make writing your research summary an easier task. 

What is a Research Summary?

A research summary is a piece of writing that summarizes the research of a specific topic into bite-size easy-to-read and comprehend articles. The primary goal is to give the reader a detailed outline of the key findings of a research.

It is an unavoidable requirement in colleges and universities. To write a good research summary, you must understand the goal of your research, as this would help make the process easier. 

A research summary preserves the structure and sections of the article it is derived from.

Research Summary or Abstract: What’s The Difference?

The Research Summary and Abstract are similar, especially as they are both brief, straight to the point, and provide an overview of the entire research paper. However, there are very clear differences.

To begin with, a Research summary is written at the end of a research activity, while the Abstract is written at the beginning of a research paper. 

A Research Summary captures the main points of a study, with an emphasis on the topic, method , and discoveries, an Abstract is a description of what your research paper would talk about and the reason for your research or the hypothesis you are trying to validate.

An abstract reflects the perceptions of the author about a topic, while a research summary reflects the ideology of the research study that is being summarized.

Getting Started with a Research Summary

Before commencing a research summary, there is a need to understand the style and organization of the content you plan to summarize. There are three fundamental areas of the research that should be the focal point:

  • When deciding on the content include a section that speaks to the importance of the research, and the techniques and tools used to arrive at your conclusion.
  • Keep the summary well organized, and use paragraphs to discuss the various sections of the research.
  • Restrict your research to 300-400 words which is the standard practice for research summaries globally. However, if the research paper you want to summarize is a lengthy one, do not exceed 10% of the entire research material.

Once you have satisfied the requirements of the fundamentals for starting your research summary, you can now begin to write using the following format:

  • Why was this research done?   – A clear description of the reason the research was embarked on and the hypothesis being tested.
  • Who was surveyed? – Your research study should have details of the source of your information. If it was via a survey, you should document who the participants of the survey were and the reason that they were selected.
  • What was the methodology? – Discuss the methodology, in terms of what kind of survey method did you adopt. Was it a face-to-face interview, a phone interview, or a focus group setting?
  • What were the key findings? – This is perhaps the most vital part of the process. What discoveries did you make after the testing? This part should be based on raw facts free from any personal bias.
  • Conclusion – What conclusions did you draw from the findings?
  • Takeaways and action points – This is where your views and perception can be reflected. Here, you can now share your recommendations or action points.
  • Identify the focal point of the article –  In other to get a grasp of the content covered in the research paper, you can skim the article first, in a bid to understand the most essential part of the research paper. 
  • Analyze and understand the topic and article – Writing a summary of a research paper involves being familiar with the topic –  the current state of knowledge, key definitions, concepts, and models. This is often gleaned while reading the literature review. Please note that only a deep understanding ensures efficient and accurate summarization of the content.
  • Make notes as you read – Highlight and summarize each paragraph as you read. Your notes are what you would further condense to create a draft that would form your research summary.

How to Structure Your Research Summary

  • Title – This highlights the area of analysis, and can be formulated to briefly highlight key findings.
  • Abstract – this is a very brief and comprehensive description of the study, required in every academic article, with a length of 100-500 words at most. 
  • Introduction – this is a vital part of any research summary, it provides the context and the literature review that gently introduces readers to the subject matter. The introduction usually covers definitions, questions, and hypotheses of the research study. 
  • Methodology –This section emphasizes the process and or data analysis methods used, in terms of experiments, surveys, sampling, or statistical analysis. 
  • Results section – this section lists in detail the results derived from the research with evidence obtained from all the experiments conducted.
  • Discussion – these parts discuss the results within the context of current knowledge among subject matter experts. Interpretation of results and theoretical models explaining the observed results, the strengths of the study, and the limitations experienced are going to be a part of the discussion.

Importance of a Good Executive Summary

Although an executive summary is similar to an abstract in that they both summarize the contents of a research study, there are several key differences. With research abstracts, the author's recommendations are rarely included, or if they are, they are implicit rather than explicit. Recommendations are generally not stated in academic abstracts because scholars operate in a discursive environment, where debates, discussions, and dialogs are meant to precede the implementation of any new research findings. The conceptual nature of much academic writing also means that recommendations arising from the findings are distributed widely and not easily or usefully encapsulated. Executive summaries are used mainly when a research study has been developed for an organizational partner, funding entity, or other external group that participated in the research . In such cases, the research report and executive summary are often written for policy makers outside of academe, while abstracts are written for the academic community. Professors, therefore, assign the writing of executive summaries so students can practice synthesizing and writing about the contents of comprehensive research studies for external stakeholder groups.

When preparing to write, keep in mind that:

Writing an Executive Summary

Read the Entire Document This may go without saying, but it is critically important that you read the entire research study thoroughly from start to finish before you begin to write the executive summary. Take notes as you go along, highlighting important statements of fact, key findings, and recommended courses of action. This will better prepare you for how to organize and summarize the study. Remember this is not a brief abstract of 300 words or less but, essentially, a mini-paper of your paper, with a focus on recommendations.

Isolate the Major Points Within the Original Document Choose which parts of the document are the most important to those who will read it. These points must be included within the executive summary in order to provide a thorough and complete explanation of what the document is trying to convey.

Separate the Main Sections Closely examine each section of the original document and discern the main differences in each. After you have a firm understanding about what each section offers in respect to the other sections, write a few sentences for each section describing the main ideas. Although the format may vary, the main sections of an executive summary likely will include the following:

  • An opening statement, with brief background information,
  • The purpose of research study,
  • Method of data gathering and analysis,
  • Overview of findings, and,
  • A description of each recommendation, accompanied by a justification. Note that the recommendations are sometimes quoted verbatim from the research study.

Combine the Information Use the information gathered to combine them into an executive summary that is no longer than 10% of the original document. Be concise! The purpose is to provide a brief explanation of the entire document with a focus on the recommendations that have emerged from your research. How you word this will likely differ depending on your audience and what they care about most. If necessary, selectively incorporate bullet points for emphasis and brevity. Re-read your Executive Summary After you've completed your executive summary, let it sit for a while before coming back to re-read it. Check to make sure that the summary will make sense as a separate document from the full research study. By taking some time before re-reading it, you allow yourself to see the summary with fresh, unbiased eyes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Length of the Executive Summary As a general rule, the correct length of an executive summary is that it meets the criteria of no more pages than 10% of the number of pages in the original document, with an upper limit of no more than ten pages [i.e., ten pages for a 100 page document]. This requirement keeps the document short enough to be read by your audience, but long enough to allow it to be a complete, stand-alone synopsis. Cutting and Pasting With the exception of specific recommendations made in the study, do not simply cut and paste whole sections of the original document into the executive summary. You should paraphrase information from the longer document. Avoid taking up space with excessive subtitles and lists, unless they are absolutely necessary for the reader to have a complete understanding of the original document. Consider the Audience Although unlikely to be required by your professor, there is the possibility that more than one executive summary will have to be written for a given document [e.g., one for policy-makers, one for private industry, one for philanthropists]. This may only necessitate the rewriting of the introduction and conclusion, but it could require rewriting the entire summary in order to fit the needs of the reader. If necessary, be sure to consider the types of audiences who may benefit from your study and make adjustments accordingly. Clarity in Writing One of the biggest mistakes you can make is related to the clarity of your executive summary. Always note that your audience [or audiences] are likely seeing your research study for the first time. The best way to avoid a disorganized or cluttered executive summary is to write it after the study is completed. Always follow the same strategies for proofreading that you would for any research paper. Use Strong and Positive Language Don’t weaken your executive summary with passive, imprecise language. The executive summary is a stand-alone document intended to convince the reader to make a decision concerning whether to implement the recommendations you make. Once convinced, it is assumed that the full document will provide the details needed to implement the recommendations. Although you should resist the temptation to pad your summary with pleas or biased statements, do pay particular attention to ensuring that a sense of urgency is created in the implications, recommendations, and conclusions presented in the executive summary. Be sure to target readers who are likely to implement the recommendations.

Elicia Moran has worked many jobs in her life — a restaurant server, a preschool teacher, a sales representative , a theater instructor — but she never expected to work in the federal government.

Moran, 37, recruits interns for the National Science Foundation, bringing people like herself into federal service via the same program she completed at age 30 — the Pathways Programs.

Facing a workforce that is increasingly older — only eight percent of federal employees are estimated to be under age 30 — the Biden administration is turning to interns as a solution, especially as a retiring workforce threatens to take crucial institutional knowledge with them. The administration set a goal of hiring 35,000 interns across federal agencies in fiscal 2023, and the fiscal 2024 budget from the Office of Management and Budget noted that the administration was on track to meet that goal.

At any given point, thousands of interns work in the federal government, through either agency-specific programs, or the federal Pathways Program — which offers three paid civil service tracks. The Pathways Program hired 5,087 interns, 3,085 recent graduates, and 395 Presidential Management Fellows in 2022. Agencies such as NASA, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Department of Energy (DOE) offer stipend-based internships in addition to the Pathways Program.

A recently launched federal internship portal organizes opportunities across agencies, and online webinars are available to explain the process. The nonprofit Partnership for Public Service also manages an internship program . Applicants need to fill out a profile on the website and be prepared for opportunities to open throughout the year. Some internships will stay open for a few days or less — and others close when they reach a certain number of applicants.

Bethany Gracer, 25, was about to start a master’s program in emergency management at the University of New Haven when the covid pandemic began. Through USAjobs.com she found internships at the GAO. She completed two internships remotely and now works full time as an analyst, reporting on subjects ranging from the Small Business Administration’s small business development program to immigration policies at the southwest border.

Ann Richmond, the staffing and classification program manager at NASA, said that students should make sure to know the timeline, and add volunteer and work experience to their résumés.

“Applicants should do their research and make sure that the information that they submit really gives a good picture of their whole personal background,” she said.

Federal recruiters are looking for candidates

While USAjobs.com is the most direct gateway into internship opportunities, networking can also be effective. Michelle Brown, a division director in the Office of Recruitment and Advisory Services at DOE, said that as applicants look for jobs, recruiters also are looking for them. She said applicants should make a LinkedIn profile, and allow their résumé to be searchable on USAjobs.com .

“This is becoming more and more kind of the way of the future, that federal recruiters are going in here, they're finding candidates that look to be a match for their positions,” she said, noting that recruiters will use the platform to market career fairs and informational sessions as well.

Dameone Ferguson was completing a bachelor’s degree in communications at Voorhees University when he applied for the college’s grant program with the DOE. His junior year, he hopped on a flight to Las Vegas to spend a summer at the National Nuclear Security Administration as a minority serving institution fellow.

Now, Ferguson, 36, also recruits new talent as the diversity chief in the Office of Environmental Management. He hired 43 early career professionals during fiscal 2023 — the first time in 10 years they have hired so many people.

“This word we call ‘intern’ is that it’s not just individuals who are coming out of college for the very first time, because we’re seeing more and more people go back to school,” he said. “That has also given us — the Department of Energy, more specifically the Office of Environment Management — more opportunity to look at talent much more, intentionally and non-traditionally.”

At a recent public service event at Delaware State University, Moran sat down with students to go over their résumés and talk about jobs.

Moran grew up in Gaithersburg and Germantown, Md. After she graduated high school, she applied and was accepted into several universities — only to learn that her parents couldn’t afford to send her.

She took classes at community college before she got her bachelor’s degree in human resources management at the University of Maryland’s global campus — where she completed a Pathways internship at the Department of Homeland Security.

“It’s just been so meaningful for me to kind of break that cycle of poverty within my own family,” she said, describing her passion for making sure resources are accessible to people of color and underserved communities. “Internships are the easiest way to get your foot in the door.”

She recalled watching the eyes of the students widen as she spoke to them. “I could see them like their wheels turning,” she said, “like ‘this is really something that I can do.'

“That’s such a blessing and a gift to give to them,” she said.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americans’ views on the legality of abortion, as well as their perceptions of abortion access. For this analysis, we surveyed 8,709 adults from April 8 to 14, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Nearly two years after the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteeing a national right to abortion, a majority of Americans continue to express support for abortion access.

About six-in-ten (63%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. This share has grown 4 percentage points since 2021 – the year prior to the 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned Roe.

The new Pew Research Center survey, conducted April 8-14, 2024, among 8,709 adults, surfaces ongoing – and often partisan – divides over abortion attitudes:

  • Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (85%) overwhelmingly say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with near unanimous support among liberal Democrats.
  • By comparison, Republicans and Republican leaners (41%) are far less likely to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. However, two-thirds of moderate and liberal Republicans still say it should be.

Since before Roe was overturned, both parties have seen a modest uptick in the share who say abortion should be legal.

As in the past, relatively few Americans (25%) say abortion should be legal in all cases, while even fewer (8%) say it should be illegal in all cases. About two-thirds of Americans do not take an absolutist view: 38% say it should be legal in most cases, and 28% say it should be illegal in most cases.

Women’s abortion decisions

A narrow majority of Americans (54%) say the statement “the decision about whether to have an abortion should belong solely to the pregnant woman” describes their views extremely or very well. Another 19% say it describes their views somewhat well, and 26% say it does not describe their views well.

Views on an embryo’s rights

About a third of Americans (35%) say the statement “human life begins at conception, so an embryo is a person with rights” describes their views extremely or very well, while 45% say it does not describe their views well.

But many Americans are cross-pressured in their views: 32% of Americans say both statements about women’s decisions and embryos’ rights describe their views at least somewhat well.

Abortion access

About six-in-ten Americans in both parties say getting an abortion in the area where they live would be at least somewhat easy, compared with four-in-ten or fewer who say it would be difficult.

However, U.S. adults are divided over whether getting an abortion should be easier or harder:

  • 31% say it should be easier for someone to get an abortion in their area, while 25% say it should be harder. Four-in-ten say the ease of access should be about what it is now.
  • 48% of Democrats say that obtaining an abortion should be easier than it is now, while just 15% of Republicans say this. Instead, 40% of Republicans say it should be harder (just 11% of Democrats say this).

As was the case last year, views about abortion access vary widely between those who live in states where abortion is legal and those who live in states where it is not allowed.

For instance, 20% of adults in states where abortion is legal say it would be difficult to get an abortion where they live, but this share rises to 71% among adults in states where abortion is prohibited.

Medication abortion

Americans say medication abortion should be legal rather than illegal by a margin of more than two-to-one (54% vs. 20%). A quarter say they are not sure.

Like opinions on the legality of abortion overall, partisans differ greatly in their views of medication abortion:

  • Republicans are closely split but are slightly more likely to say it should be legal (37%) than illegal (32%). Another 30% aren’t sure.
  • Democrats (73%) overwhelmingly say medication abortion should be legal. Just 8% say it should be illegal, while 19% are not sure.

Across most other demographic groups, Americans are generally more supportive than not of medication abortion.

Across demographic groups, support for abortion access has changed little since this time last year.

Today, roughly six-in-ten (63%) say abortion should be legal in all (25%) or most (38%) cases. And 36% say it should be illegal in all (8%) or most (28%) cases.

While differences are only modest by gender, other groups vary more widely in their views.

Race and ethnicity

Support for legal abortion is higher among Black (73%) and Asian (76%) adults compared with White (60%) and Hispanic (59%) adults.

Compared with older Americans, adults under 30 are particularly likely to say abortion should be legal: 76% say this, versus about six-in-ten among other age groups.

Those with higher levels of formal education express greater support for legal abortion than those with lower levels of educational attainment.

About two-thirds of Americans with a bachelor’s degree or more education (68%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with six-in-ten among those without a degree.

White evangelical Protestants are about three times as likely to say abortion should be illegal (73%) as they are to say it should be legal (25%).

By contrast, majorities of White nonevangelical Protestants (64%), Black Protestants (71%) and Catholics (59%) say abortion should be legal. And religiously unaffiliated Americans are especially likely to say abortion should be legal (86% say this).

Partisanship and ideology

Democrats (85%) are about twice as likely as Republicans (41%) to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

But while more conservative Republicans say abortion should be illegal (76%) than legal (27%), the reverse is true for moderate and liberal Republicans (67% say legal, 31% say illegal).

By comparison, a clear majority of conservative and moderate Democrats (76%) say abortion should be legal, with liberal Democrats (96%) overwhelmingly saying this.

Views of abortion access by state

About six-in-ten Americans (58%) say it would be easy for someone to get an abortion in the area where they live, while 39% say it would be difficult.

This marks a slight shift since last year, when 54% said obtaining an abortion would be easy. But Americans are still less likely than before the Dobbs decision to say obtaining an abortion would be easy.

Still, Americans’ views vary widely depending on whether they live in a state that has banned or restricted abortion.

In states that prohibit abortion, Americans are about three times as likely to say it would be difficult to obtain an abortion where they live as they are to say it would be easy (71% vs. 25%). The share saying it would be difficult has risen 19 points since 2019.

In states where abortion is restricted or subject to legal challenges, 51% say it would be difficult to get an abortion where they live. This is similar to the share who said so last year (55%), but higher than the share who said this before the Dobbs decision (38%).

By comparison, just 20% of adults in states where abortion is legal say it would be difficult to get one. This is little changed over the past five years.

Americans’ attitudes about whether it should be easier or harder to get an abortion in the area where they live also varies by geography.

Overall, a decreasing share of Americans say it should be harder to obtain an abortion: 33% said this in 2019, compared with 25% today.

This is particularly true of those in states where abortion is now prohibited or restricted.

In both types of states, the shares of Americans saying it should be easier to obtain an abortion have risen 12 points since before Roe was overturned, as the shares saying it should be harder have gradually declined.

By comparison, changes in views among those living in states where abortion is legal have been more modest.

While Americans overall are more supportive than not of medication abortion (54% say it should be legal, 20% say illegal), there are modest differences in support across groups:

  • Younger Americans are somewhat more likely to say medication abortion should be legal than older Americans. While 59% of adults ages 18 to 49 say it should be legal, 48% of those 50 and older say the same.
  • Asian adults (66%) are particularly likely to say medication abortion should be legal compared with White (55%), Black (51%) and Hispanic (47%) adults.
  • White evangelical Protestants oppose medication abortion by about two-to-one (45% vs. 23%), with White nonevangelicals, Black Protestants, Catholics and religiously unaffiliated adults all being more likely than not to say medication abortion should be legal.
  • Republicans are closely divided over medication abortion: 37% say it should be legal while 32% say it should be illegal. But similar to views on abortion access overall, conservative Republicans are more opposed (43% illegal, 27% legal), while moderate and liberals are more supportive (55% legal, 14% illegal).

Just over half of Americans (54%) say “the decision about whether to have an abortion should belong solely to the pregnant woman” describes their views extremely or very well, compared with 19% who say somewhat well and 26% who say not too or not at all well.

Democrats (76%) overwhelmingly say this statement describes their views extremely or very well, with just 8% saying it does not describe their views well.

Republicans are more divided: 44% say it does not describe their views well while 33% say it describes them extremely or very well. Another 22% say it describes them somewhat well.

Fewer Americans (35%) say the statement “human life begins at conception, so an embryo is a person with rights” describes their views extremely or very well. Another 19% say it describes their views somewhat well while 45% say it describes them not too or not at all well.

(The survey asks separately whether “a fetus is a person with rights.” The results are roughly similar: 37% say that statement describes their views extremely or very well.)

Republicans are about three times as likely as Democrats to say “an embryo is a person with rights” describes their views extremely or very well (53% vs. 18%). In turn, Democrats (66%) are far more likely than Republicans (25%) to say it describes their views not too or not at all well.

Some Americans are cross-pressured about abortion

When results on the two statements are combined, 41% of Americans say the statement about a pregnant woman’s right to choose describes their views at least somewhat well , but not the statement about an embryo being a person with rights. About two-in-ten (21%) say the reverse.

But for nearly a third of U.S. adults (32%), both statements describe their views at least somewhat well.

Just 4% of Americans say neither statement describes their views well.

Project: University of Florida and Johns Hopkins University

The University of Florida, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, is conducting a 2-year study:

  • HCV testing among pregnant persons,
  • HCV treatment among HCV-infected persons that was begun within 1 year after the end of pregnancy, and
  • HCV testing of infants born to people infected with HCV during pregnancy.
  • The risk of pregnancy loss following exposure to doxycycline, and
  • The risk of birth defects among infants who were born after prenatal exposure to doxycycline.

Project: Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago

Building on previous formative work , this 1-year project aims to better understand and address barriers to care for HCV infection for pregnant people. To understand barriers and attitudes around HCV treatment during pregnancy, the team will conduct interviews with

  • Currently pregnant patients,
  • Postpartum patients, and
  • Obstetric providers caring for people with hepatitis C

The outcomes of this project will be: 1) a broader understanding of patient and provider attitudes that might improve access to treatment for pregnant patients with HCV, and 2) a telehealth module designed to educate prenatal care providers about HCV infection in pregnancy, transmission of HCV infection to the baby, screening of perinatally exposed infants, and options for treatment of hepatitis C with direct-acting antivirals.

Limited Submission Notice: FY24 Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program (PSSG)

This call for white papers is in anticipation of the FY24 Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program (PSSG), which we expect to be released this summer. The following information is based on the FY23 notice inviting applications (NIA) . The purpose of this program is to improve underserved undergraduate student outcomes, including retention, transfer, credit accumulation, and completion, by leveraging data and implementing, scaling, and rigorously evaluating evidence-based activities to support data-driven decisions and actions by institutional leaders committed to inclusive student success. Successful projects will demonstrate how institutional leadership will be involved with and supportive of project leadership and how the project relates to the institution’s broader student success priorities and improvement processes. Early-Phase grants are meant to develop, implement, and test the feasibility of a program that prior research suggests is likely to improve student retention and completion. Mid-Phase/Expansion grants are to improve and/or expand initiatives and practices that have been proven to be effective in increasing student retention and completion.

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline:

One (1) proposal per institution is permitted. 

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, Principal Investigators must first submit a one- to two-page white paper to [email protected] by 4pm on June 7, 2024.

The white paper should include:

  • The project’s phase (Early-phase or Mid-phase/Expansion)
  • A project summary which includes (1) the evidence-based practices to be implemented and researched, (2) the goal and objectives of the project, (3) the underserved student target population(s), (4) the potential impact of the project (i.e. benefits, outcomes) and (5) demonstrate how leadership will be involved with and supportive of the project.

The white paper will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Clearly demonstrates promising new strategies for student retention and success that build on, or are alternative to, existing strategies.
  • The extent to which there is a conceptual framework underlying the proposed research and the quality of that framework.
  • Clearly defined goal and objectives.
  • The extent to which the design of the proposed project is appropriate to the needs of the target population or other identified needs.
  • Demonstration of how the project relates to the institution’s broader student success priorities and improvement processes.

The Laboratory of Dr. Catherine Kaczorowski is seeking a highly organized and skilled research laboratory specialist (associate-lead) in genetic mechanisms that promote resilience to AD at the cellular level. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for performing patch-seq experiments using brain slice electrophysiology and cell culture models to measure intrinsic and synaptic plasticity in mice resilient to developing cognitive deficits despite harboring causal mutations (see Neuner et al., 2019, Neuron). This role requires a high level of self-motivation and organization, along with the ability and willingness to acquire new skills. The candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment. The successful candidate will be able to plan, develop, execute, and analyze an independent research project in the context of a supportive lab and institutional environment. In addition, they will help train undergraduate research assistants and junior technicians in the lab.   • Uses patch clamp electrophysiology in acute brain slices to record neuronal activity and measure intrinsic and synaptic plasticity, fill and label neurons for subsequent morphological characterization, and preserve nuclei for subsequent transcriptomics.
  • Proactively identifies problems, troubleshoots, and analyzes variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; develops, modifies, refines, or adapts techniques and procedures; modifies and/or adjusts quality control measures.
  • Monitors documentation of results; reviews and recognizes documentation which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; may collaborate with others.
  • Plans and monitors resources needed to operate the laboratory; maintains chemical inventory.

At least 1 year of experience in molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, RNA and DNA purification, PCR, DNA sequencing and gel electrophoresis in a laboratory environment required. Experience working with RNA strongly preferred. Experience with quantitative PCR strongly preferred. Thorough understanding of PCR techniques strongly preferred. Experience with "next-generation" sequencing techniques and proficiency with DNA sequence analysis software desirable. Thorough understanding of current research in immunology and virology desirable. Candidate must also be well organized, self-motivated and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The successful applicant should possess strong computer skills, as most of the data analysis and data reporting is performed electronically.

The Secret to Research Trainee Success? Hands-On and Real-World Experiences through NLM

The National Library of Medicine’s commitment to scientific discovery, health care, and public health is summarized in its mission statement :

NLM pioneers new ways to make biomedical data and information more accessible; builds tools for better data management and personal health; and helps create a more diverse and data-skilled workforce .

To make this goal of diversity a reality, NLM leads a variety of initiatives to connect students from underrepresented backgrounds with resources that can build their experience and knowledge at all stages of their educational and professional careers. “Students” is a broad identification that can include those in high school, undergraduate, and even postdoctoral programs, and the National Institutes of Health and NLM can help support them throughout their academic journeys in multiple ways.

Hands-on, intramural experiences

College, graduate, and professional students can participate in NIH Intramural Research Program summer internships . This experience is suitable for students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmacology, nursing, and other health-related fields. Program participants are in full-time research positions at an NIH institute or center of their choosing, including at NLM, and are provided with professional development opportunities and educational and career advising.

The NLM summer internship program, the NLM Data Science and Informatics (DSI) Scholars Program , aims to reach students with diverse backgrounds who are interested in computational health and computational biology research. In addition to receiving the same opportunities as all NIH summer interns, DSI Scholars are immersed in scholarly computational research, development workshops, NLM mentorships, and more. At the end of the internship experience, students can participate in a graduate and professional school fair and a poster presentation.

NLM and NIH are on the ground creating various opportunities for students—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds and communities—to take advantage of and prepare them to become the future of data-driven health research. NLM aims to instill and foster in participating trainees that their unique experiences, perspectives, and innovation have the potential to transform the entire field of biomedical research.

The NLM University-based Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Research Training (T15) Program is supported by the NLM Division of Extramural Programs. Students who apply to T15-awarded institutions can obtain graduate and postdoctoral training and hands-on research experience in topics such as health care informatics, translational bioinformatics, clinical informatics, public health informatics, personal health informatics, and data science.

The NIH Summer Research and Education (R25) Program complements the T15 program. This short-term biomedical informatics and data science training program is available to undergraduate and graduate students, especially those who are from underserved groups, who are looking forward to future doctoral studies in biomedical informatics and data science.

Both programs aim to increase diversity in these fields, so students from all backgrounds are encouraged to reach out to each program’s principal investigator for more information. The T15 and R25 programs aim to provide extensive mentoring and skill development so that students can go on to lead successful research careers in the scientific areas that are supported by NLM.

My personal experience

The NLM Associate Fellowship Program is a virtual one-year residency program for early- and second-career librarians who are within five years of their graduations and are interested in advancing equitable and innovative futures for biomedical libraries. The program combines curriculum from various NLM divisions and project work.

As a current Associate Fellow, I can attest to the insider scope and experience that budding librarians can gain and have gotten the opportunity to work on projects related to my professional interests. Projects in user engagement and training and in scholarly communication, coupled with research mentorship, were key to my growth as a librarian within this program.

Getting to tailor my Associate Fellowship training allowed me the opportunity to lead and coordinate an Alternative Spring Break for University of Kentucky MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) students. Providing these students a glimpse into NLM and leading their short project experiences advanced my interest and knowledge in fostering librarianship students’ success.

Funding students’ experiences

The NIH Intramural Research Program offers scholarships to undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in biomedical-related studies through the Undergraduate Scholarship Program . NIH allocates these funds, which can cover up to $20,000 per academic year for tuition and other eligible expenses and can be renewed up to four years, through the student’s university. After each awarded school year, students will spend their summers on NIH’s campus in Bethesda, Maryland, in a peer group directed by a principal investigator. There, they can explore research opportunities in biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences.

Students enrolled in a U.S. medical program or Medical Scientist Training Program are encouraged to apply for the MD/PhD Partnership Training Program , where students can benefit from NIH-based mentorship, customized clinical activities, and more. Tuition and stipend benefits are also offered to students who are enrolled at participating medical schools.

Ariah Long, MLIS

Ms. Long received her Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in May 2023. As an NLM fellow , she gained instructional design and research experience that led to a greater interest in accessibility. She plans to use this experience to offer community and comfort through engagement and training initiatives at an academic or government library. Specifically, Ms. Long aspires to help medical students, researchers, and professionals feel safe, understood, and prepared as they enter their research and professional endeavors. Ms. Long also holds a BA in English from the University of Illinois Chicago.
