Other avenues for funding study abroad

Study abroad loans .

Whether your major requires study abroad or you can’t go without the life-changing rite of passage, sometimes your pooled together funds still don’t add up. Federal, state, local, private and university financial aid programs offer opportunities for students to take out loans to finance the education abroad. Study abroad loans can be repaid with interest later. Like scholarships, loans also have application deadlines so stay on your toes and pop into your university’s financial aid office to plan early. Keep reading to get the full 411 on student loans for study abroad .

Save yourself the headache of navigating the complex world of loans and take a peek at our directory for study abroad loans . We’ve broken down the process to make it as pain free as possible.

Study Abroad Grants

If you’ve been spending some time figuring out study abroad grants and how they’re any different from study abroad scholarships, the time has finally come for closure. The two terms are frequently used interchangeably and both provide “free money” for study abroad purposes . The technical difference comes down to where the money comes from. Official government agencies and established organizations usually manage grant programs, while scholarships are less structured and distributed by companies and non-profits.

Study Abroad Fellowships

The fancier sounding “study abroad fellowship” can be best described as a beefed up grant or scholarship to support study at the graduate level . They can fund research projects or coursework abroad.

These are absolutely worth considering you'd like to do a full-on masters degree abroad or PhD abroad.

Study Abroad Fundraising Ideas

Harness your creative juices to come up with the wildest study abroad fundraising ideas to help pay for airfare, program costs, and living costs. Be sure to word a compelling argument and motivation for going abroad as your cause, such as to supplement research or academic growth. Because everyone and their mother would love a free trip abroad, travel fundraising is often a delicate, tricky process.

Highlight what about your program can contribute to the greater good or your own growth. “Support me in researching the migrant crisis in Europe as I study abroad next semester” is tremendously more convincing than “Free money for my trip abroad, please” ! Websites like FundMyTravel can be a great place to start virtually in addition to community initiatives.

Make it rain with study abroad scholarships

Piling up all those scholarships, grants, fellowships, and funds from creative fundraising is like the cherry on top to any international experience sundae. Leave the financial stress behind, lay out your funding options early, and start cashing in on some serious international scholarships to live out your study abroad to its full potential. The application process isn’t always easy, but it’s guaranteed to quite literally pay off in the end if you play your cards right.

How to Find Study Abroad Scholarships

Here are some sources of scholarships and grants that can lower the costs for U.S. college students to study abroad.

Planning study abroad scholarships early is a way for students to effectively plan for their coursework in another country.

The consensus among experts on how college students who want to study abroad should approach searching for scholarships is simple: Do it early.

Just as with coursework, finances and opportunities throughout a college career, it’s important to look for scholarships and plan out the financial implications of studying abroad as soon as possible, experts say.

“It seems crazy, but we tell students to plan for studying abroad in their first year,” says Nyoka Joseph, assistant director of student services at New York University ’s International Exchange Program.

NYU, like many colleges, doesn’t allow students to study abroad their first year on campus. However, it’s important to start exploring right away if a student intends to study internationally, Joseph says.

Types of Study Abroad Scholarships

Scholarships based on academics or personal background are available.

Academic, or merit-based, scholarships typically consider a student’s GPA, past and future coursework, past projects or research, and standardized test scores, says Nick Gozik, dean of global education and an assistant professor at Elon University in North Carolina, where 84% of students study abroad at some point in college.

“There’s also identity-based opportunities available for African American students, for LGBTQIA students, for students of certain ethnicities,” he says. “There’s opportunities for students from certain states, students in certain majors or areas of interest. Those ones really depend largely on the organization or the donor and what they've specified.”

There are also scholarships specific to a student’s country of destination .

Gozik says students often don’t realize they qualify for scholarships, and even one that's a small financial amount can make a difference.

Seeking Scholarships Aids Study Abroad Planning

Another reason to apply early for study abroad scholarships is so that students can effectively plan their college course schedule.

“Planning and applying early allows you to figure out when you can go abroad, what courses you need to take before you go so that you can map out the courses in upcoming years,” Gozik says, “and you can start saving financially in advance and have that conversation with a parent or guardian.”

This is a reason why students who study abroad tend to be good planners, says Margaret Wiedenhoeft, executive director of the Center for International Programs at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

“It takes a lot of work to prepare to go off campus, and to make sure that it's going to be a part of your curriculum plan as a college student, and not something that is going to end up preventing you from graduating on time ,” she says.

Students also should reflect and be honest about how they budget and manage their money , Wiedenhoeft says.

“Think about what you usually spend on a weekly basis when you're on campus, and then think about how and if you're going to be able to do that when you go abroad,” she says. “Are you savvy in where you're choosing to study abroad, because there are some places where the cost of living is maybe lower than actually where you're studying on campus and so your money might go further.”

For example, Joseph says the cost for NYU students studying away in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic in Europe, is typically cheaper than if they were on campus in the heart of New York City.

Colleges usually have internal scholarships that can be navigated with help from academic advisers and the study abroad office, experts note.

For external scholarships, go to study abroad fairs and information sessions, and do some digging in online search engines, experts recommend. Many of these types of study abroad scholarships are sponsored by independent foundations and groups.

“Students have to take a bit of ownership, because even if we provide the information on the scholarships that are available, it's impossible to tell every student every scholarship they qualify for,” Joseph says. “So we definitely recommend looking early on if you have interest in studying abroad.”

Examples of Study Abroad Scholarships

Here are nine sources of funding, mostly competitive, that can help pay for your travels to learn outside the U.S.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Joseph says she always recommends students attend information sessions for the Gilman Scholarship Program , which allocates nearly 3,000 scholarships a year.

To be eligible, recipients must be U.S. citizens receiving the federal Pell Grant.

Award amounts are up to $5,000 a semester, with the potential to earn an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Award for students studying certain languages, and up to an additional $1,000 STEM Supplemental Award for students studying STEM abroad.

The scholarship prioritizes first-generation college students, those with a diverse background, the impact of the program and students studying STEM or a critical need language.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is March 7, 2024.

Boren Scholarships

Boren Scholarships are focused on language, culture and service.

Eligible candidates are undergraduates planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. The organization gives preference to programs based on their duration, focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country, and the applicant’s field of study.

Some of the preferred languages of study are French, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, Zulu, Hindi and Urdu. Students entering a STEM field are given priority.

The deadline to apply for a Boren Scholarship is Jan. 31, 2024, and winners will be awarded up to $10,000 a semester.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships

The Fund for Education Abroad has numerous scholarship opportunities for various interests and backgrounds, including LGBTQI-based awards, one specific to students studying in Vietnam or Greece and a scholarship for students enrolled in a U.S. community college .

Scholarships are up to $5,000 a semester, and the nonprofit prioritizes first-generation and minority students. Most of the scholarships have more than one winner each year.

The application deadlines are typically in September.

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship

Tortuga, a company that makes travel backpacks and luggage, offers $1,000 scholarships for students studying abroad. Winners of the scholarship also receive – perhaps not surprisingly – a travel backpack.

The application requires a short essay explaining what a student hopes to take away from the study abroad experience and how those lessons will be brought back home. Applicants must be undergraduates at a four-year U.S. school who have been accepted to a for-credit study abroad program.

The deadline to apply for the spring 2024 scholarship is Nov. 15, 2023, and the winner will be announced Nov. 30. Fall 2024 travelers must apply by April 15, 2024, and decisions are announced April 30.

AIFS Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants

The American Institute For Foreign Study offers several scholarships worth up to $5,000. The smallest scholarship is for $500, and deadlines vary depending on the scholarship.

While some scholarships are based generally on academic performance, others are specifically for students who are a part of underrepresented minority groups or attending historically Black colleges and universities, commonly called HBCUs .

There are several featured study abroad programs at the AIFS Global Education Center in Florence, Italy, including a summer program where students can earn up to 10 college credits; traditional fall and spring semester programs that allow students to earn up to 16 credits; and fall and spring study programs that include an internship and allow up to 12 credits.

Global Experiences Scholarships and Grants

Global Experiences, an AIFS program, has pledged $25,000 in scholarships each year "to engage a more culturally aware workforce," according to the program website.

These scholarships are for summer or semester internship terms in various global cities, such as Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Florence, Prague, Sydney, Edinburgh and Galway, Ireland.

Several scholarships and multiple $500 grants for on-site study abroad are intended to promote diversity, equity and inclusion . Scholarships are a minimum of $200, which is for a virtual study abroad experience, and a maximum of $2,500 per semester. Application deadlines vary.

CEA CAPA Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants

CEA CAPA, an Arizona-based organization that promotes equity in study abroad opportunities, offers more than $2 million each year in scholarships, grants and affiliation programs.

Six scholarships and three grants are distributed for programs that last at least three weeks. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $5,000, and $500 flight credits are given to those who apply with a code by Nov. 17, 2023.

Scholarships, which are administered by the nonprofit Fund for Education Abroad, include those for first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students , students of color and more. Some applicants may also qualify for grants that help subsidize the costs of airfare, passport applications and loss of work-study income while studying abroad.

GPA requirements vary for the scholarships. Application deadlines range from Oct. 15 to May 1 for five study abroad terms: spring, late spring, summer, late summer and fall.

The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarships

Named for Corinne Jeannine Schillings, a former executive assistant at the National Italian American Foundation and the CATO Institute, the foundation offers scholarships to former Girl Scouts who received a Gold Award or Silver Award and want to study abroad when they attend college.

The scholarships aim to help undergraduate women financially who are learning other cultures through study abroad for a summer, semester or entire year.

Scholarships are $1,000. Deadlines are in December and May.

Rotary Global Grant Scholarships

Rotary International offers thousands of dollars in scholarships , including grants for graduate students studying abroad specifically for one of Rotary’s causes: promoting peace, fighting disease, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies, protecting the environment or providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

Scholarships last from one to four years for $30,000 to $40,000, and the deadline to apply is May 1, 2024.

As you begin writing your study abroad scholarship applications, be sure to focus on what you hope to accomplish in your time abroad. Speak about past experiences and how they will help equip you to make the most of your experience. And be sure to fit the programs you’re applying for into your general career trajectory.

Remember, study abroad can be a period of exploration and fun, but scholarship providers are not looking to fund a vacation. Be sure to speak of your semester abroad in terms of a learning experience and discuss clear goals you have for your time there. If you are learning the language of the country you’d study in, be sure to put that front-and-center, and discuss how being in that country will help you achieve fluency.

Writing an effective essay

Scholarship essays are their own artform, and there are many tips and tricks to help you write an effective application. We have guides to help you through that process. Let us help you start and end your scholarship essays, tailor your writing to 250 or 500 word limits, and write effectively about yourself . Be sure also to check out our guide to writing scholarship resumes , and responding to common scholarship prompts .

One of the great things about study abroad is that students can qualify for financial aid to study abroad (just like any other academic semester). This means that any need-based financial aid you are receiving can be applied to pay for your study abroad semester. This includes need-based grants specifically from your college, as well as Pell Grants .

This means that students will need to submit their FAFSA each year (as well as any other financial aid forms that your institution requires).

Students who are receiving merit-based scholarships will also be able to apply their awards to a study abroad experience. In fact, some merit and full ride scholarships will offer students a specific stipend for study abroad.

U.S. State Department Visa Services

Unfortunately, study abroad isn’t all fun and games! There is a fair amount of paperwork you’ll have to complete, and one of the first steps, and the one you should be the most careful about, is the visa. You’ll need to get a student visa for wherever you are going. Start this process early, so if there are any complications, it won’t foil your plans to study abroad.

U.S. State Department Passport Services

It’s time to pull your passport out of that dusty drawer and check to make sure it’s all in order. Make sure that it does not expire within six months of the date of the end of your program. Some countries make this a requirement for entry. Passport services often take a long time, so be sure to start this early and keep on top of the process.

  • Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about scholarships

A scholarship is a financial award granted to students to help with the cost of studying at university. Scholarships can vary in amount and can usually be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs, travel costs and academic materials among other things.

Scholarships can be awarded based on various criteria such as academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, research areas, leadership potential or financial need.

Scholarships are open to all students including domestic, European Union and international students and can be used for all levels of university study including undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, research programmes, doctoral programmes and PhD programmes.

Where can you find scholarships for international students?

1. University scholarships: These are given by the university based on good grades, extracurricular activities or financial need. Universities will set their own criteria for applying to scholarships, and each university has its own list of scholarships it provides.

2. Academic or merit-based scholarships: These are for students who achieve high grades in school, either in a particular subject or in final exams and have a good academic record or GPA .

3. Performance-based scholarships: These are for students who are exceptional in areas such as sports, arts or music and are looking to pursue that at university.

4. External scholarships: These come from organisations outside universities, such as businesses, charities or higher education associations. Applications to them are usually separate from any university application forms.

5. Government scholarships: Most governments will have their own range of scholarships that will fund tuition fees and travel expenses (such as airfare) for international students wishing to apply to study in their country. Many will also be targeted at students from specific countries or regions.

6. Country/region-based scholarships: These can come from a range of sources including universities themselves, government departments, businesses or charities and will be aimed at students from a particular country or region.

What types of scholarships available for international students?

1. Partially funded scholarships: Unlike a full scholarship, these will cover only some of a student’s expenses. Therefore, students may need to find other ways to pay for the rest of their university expenses such as personal savings, help from families, part-time jobs or other scholarships. Some may offer funding for only one or two years of study.

2. Fully funded scholarships: These cover all expenses, including full tuition fees, accommodation and living costs throughout the university degree course.

3. Research grants: Research grants are financial awards given to university students so they can do in-depth studies and learn more about specific topics in their courses. These are offered globally and can be provided by institutions, government bodies or private organisations.

4. Work-study programmes: Some universities offer programmes in which students can work and gain experience while earning money for their studies.

5. Undergraduate scholarships: These are awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree.

Be sure to adapt these questions to the specific university or institution you’re interested in for valuable insights into the available scholarships.

1. How do scholarships work?

Scholarships are financial awards given to students based on a range of criteria including academic merit, research proposals, nationality and financial need. These funds aim to support students to pursue their education by covering a portion or the entirety of tuition fees, living expenses or other educational costs.

2. How to apply for scholarships?

To apply for scholarships, students need first to find the right scholarship for their studies. They then need to complete the application forms and submit the required documents, which may include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal statements. Each scholarship has its own application process, and it’s important to carefully follow instructions and meet deadlines.

3. Where can I find scholarships?

We can help you get a scholarship as an international student through many of our guides and “scholarship of the month” spotlights. Online scholarship databases, university websites and government scholarship portals are also valuable resources for discovering available opportunities.

4. What do scholarships cover?

Scholarships can cover a range of university-related expenses, including tuition fees, accommodation, books, airfare or travel expenses, and living costs. The specific coverage will depend on the scholarship provider.

5. Do scholarships cover all expenses?

While some scholarships may cover all expenses, others may only partially cover certain aspects of your time at university. It’s crucial for students to carefully review the terms and conditions of each scholarship to understand the extent of financial support offered.

6. What are the eligibility requirements for scholarships?

Eligibility requirements for scholarships are different for each award and can include academic achievements, leadership qualities, nationality, financial need, extracurricular activities and more. Read the criteria outlined by each scholarship provider to determine what you need to provide to demonstrate your eligibility.

7. How can I find eligibility criteria for scholarships?

Eligibility criteria for scholarships are usually detailed in the scholarship guidelines or terms and conditions provided by the awarding institution or organisation. Students can find this information on the official websites of universities, government agencies or scholarship databases.

For our “scholarship of the month” features, we provide details on the highlighted award and what a candidate will need to demonstrate eligibility. You can also subscribe to our student newsletter to find out about new opportunities as they arise.

8. What is the easiest scholarship to get for international students?

Examples include scholarships for Chinese , Indian , African , Japanese , South Korean , Indonesian and Malaysian students, as well as students from Hong Kong . But there are many other scholarships that provide funding for students living in countries outside of these listed above.

11. How can international students get ready for scholarship applications?

Preparation for scholarship applications can begin long before completing the application itself. Research where you want to study and then look at government and university scholarships in your chosen destination. Make sure that you keep your grades up and take part in extracurricular activities as these can all help to boost your application. Ensure that you then collect all your supporting documents in plenty of time and that you’ve taken all relevant tests and exams.

12. What are needs-based scholarships?

Needs-based scholarships are there to help students who may not have the financial means to fund their education. These will be based on things such as such as family income, assets and how many people are in the household.

To apply, students usually need to show documents such as income tax returns, parental wages and proof of assets to demonstrate their financial situation.

13. What documents are needed for scholarship applications?

Although every scholarship application is different and can require specific documentation, most ask for an accurately completed application form, academic transcripts or records demonstrating scholastic performance, letters of recommendation from teachers or employers, a compelling personal statement or essay, and a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé detailing your educational background and extracurricular activities.

There may also be other documents required, so be sure to read the application requirements carefully.

14. Is there support for international students during the application process?

Yes, international students can often access support during the scholarship application process through their university international office. These offices provide guidance on application requirements, procedures, and may offer assistance in navigating the application process. It is best to contact them directly as you start your application for specialised help.

Students can also speak to their teachers or high school counsellors for help with their applications.

15. Are there any extra benefits when you are awarded a scholarship?

In addition to financial support for tuition, accommodation and living expenses, many scholarships offer added benefits. These may include mentorship programmes, networking opportunities or exclusive events to enhance your overall academic and personal development.

16. How long do scholarships last, and can I renew a scholarship? What are the conditions for renewal?

The duration of scholarships varies, and applicants should carefully review the terms and conditions of each award. Some scholarships cover the entire duration of your academic programme, while others may be renewable each year. The conditions for renewal often depend on maintaining a certain level of academic performance or meeting specific criteria outlined by the scholarship provider.

17. How competitive are scholarships?

Some scholarships can be very competitive depending on the popularity of the programme and the number of applicants. Usually, prestigious scholarships have a higher level of competition, while others with specific eligibility criteria may be more accessible. It’s best for students to research each scholarship and tailor their applications to align with the specific criteria to give themselves the best chance of submitting a successful application.

18. What services are available for international students on scholarships?

Craft a compelling narrative, focus on your unique qualities and experiences, and illustrate how the scholarship aligns with your academic and career aspirations.

22. How to prepare for scholarship interviews?

Preparing for scholarship interviews involves researching the scholarship provider, understanding the goals of the scholarship, and anticipating common interview questions. Practise explaining your achievements, goals and reasons for applying. Dress professionally, demonstrate enthusiasm, and be ready to discuss your academic and extracurricular experiences in a concise and compelling manner.

23. What are the deadlines for scholarship applications?

Programmes have different deadlines, so make sure you take note of every due date on your chosen scholarship applications. Carefully review the application guidelines provided by each scholarship and plan accordingly because many scholarships do not accept late applications.

study abroad scholarships for phd

The Freedom to Assemble Program: Protest, Place, and the Civil Rights Movement will involve a direct examination of the use of protest and demonstrations during the Civil Rights movement and government response. Specifically, the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from abridging the right of individuals to peaceably assemble, and Civil Rights Movement participants regularly used the act of protests, demonstrations, and marches to fight against inequality, segregation, and racism. However, these protests were often met with aggressive responses and arrests to either end protests or block protests before they began through the use of legal injunctions.

Katie Juarez Rodriguez

Katie Juarez Rodriguez (Management, BA 25)

Hello! My name is Katie Juarez Rodriguez and I am a first generation college student majoring in Business Management. I will be participating in the European Summer School program in Bielefeld, Germany. As someone who grew up low income, I did not think I would ever be able to study abroad. I am so thankful that UWT offers scholarships and other resources that help students like me be able to participate in this program. I am looking forward to learning new things while also exploring and embracing a new culture.

Coral Sky (Psychology, BA 24)

Hello All! My name is Coral Sky. During the Summer quarter, I will participate in the Prague: Psychology of Culture and Food in the Czech Republic program. Initially, I did not believe study abroad would be plausible based on the monetary aspects. Nevertheless, the scholarships granted to me made my dreams of studying in another country a reality. As a Black female student, I have made it my mission to use all the tools provided to me to become a more culturally conscious and understanding human being. This opportunity to study in Prague is indispensable to my academic and professional careers. The ability to understand cultures that differ from mine will add context to the work I will complete throughout graduate school. In addition, my wish to be a fierce advocate for all historically silenced voices can not come to fruition without forging trusting relatinships with those who may not look or think similarly to me. The addition of marginalized voices adds the necessary color to an otherwise monochromatic story.

Abdul Sinyan

Abdul Sinyan (Business Administration, BA 24)

My name is Abdul. I am a senior studying Business Administration in UWT. I am an African American who loves to learn and explore new things. In this year of 2024, I decided to take a huge opportunity to be part of students who will be studding abroad for psychology of culture and food in the Czech Republic. I learned a lot of different great ideas or experiences from students who took advantages to study abroad through the UWT. The experiences from students before me really convince me to want to see and learned the different experience working with different people abroad, and this would develop my skills in working with different diverse people. The best resources I find very helpful finding all my answers about study abroad is through the UWT Study Abroad Instagram and YouTube channel.

Parker McAfee

Parker McAfee (Psychology, BA 24)

My name is Parker, and I'm participating in the Peru Spanish immersion trip for Summer 2024. I am a transgender and autistic student excited to embrace the language and culture of Peru over the summer. I've lived in areas where I did not belong throughout my life and felt unwanted, but I never had the chance to travel. That is why I am a Psychology major specializing in mental health services and clinical psychology. I am excited to see how aspects such as cultural norms and the structure of the Spanish language impact the realms within my field outside of an American context.

Hi all! My name is Hayden Busic, and I am a current Junior at the Milgard School of Business, majoring in Marketing and minoring in Business data analytics. Since the beginning of my academic path, studying abroad has always been an important goal of mine. Studying in Cusco, Peru, through the UW Tacoma Study Abroad program aligns perfectly with my academic and career goals. Exposure to diverse settings and the challenges of living in a foreign country will further foster adaptability and resilience, qualities essential not only as a military child but also in the dynamic field of business marketing. As a military child, my life has been characterized by frequent relocations and exposure to diverse cultures. I truly am excited and thankful for an opportunity such as this, giving me the chance to continuously learn and grow as an individual.

International Programs

Meet study abroad's summer 2024 global access ambassador scholarship awardees .

Study abroad scholarships are crucial for enabling access to international education, fostering cultural exchange, promoting global understanding, and empowering students to pursue enriching experiences beyond their home countries.

With support from the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization , the Global Access Ambassador Scholarship program provides up to 10 $1,000 scholarships for the spring and fall semesters or academic year, and up to 10 scholarships for the summer and winter sessions.

The scholarship is intended to support students who study abroad with the intent to serve as Global Access Ambassadors upon their return to the UI campus, with special consideration given to students with a history of overcoming adversity to pursue personal, academic, or professional goals.

Meet the summer 2024 recipients:

student smiling

Corey Breiten , a second-year mathematics major from Saint Charles, Illinois, will study abroad on the Ghana Education & Culture program .

“As I've never been to Africa, the opportunity to travel to a country like Ghana and delve into its culture and educational systems is incredibly meaningful to me. Studying abroad is important for me because it will encourage personal growth by pushing me out of my comfort zone and gaining independence. I want to gain confidence in navigating new and unfamiliar situations.

I selected this program because it aligns perfectly with my major and the goals I've set for my life. The opportunity to travel to another country and experience a different education system is truly transformative. I strongly believe in incorporating culture into the classroom, and there's no better way to do so than by traveling to another country.”

student smiling

Hailey Durso , a second-year nursing major from Batavia, Illinois, will study abroad on the CEA: Study in Florence program .

“I am most excited to explore the beautiful city of Florence. Florence is known for its outstanding art and architecture, so I am excited to see all that Florence has to offer.

I picked my program after going to the Study Abroad Fair at the University of Iowa. I have always wanted to go to Italy, so that was the most important factor in deciding my program.

As a first-generation college student, it is so important to me to take all the opportunities that college has to offer. Studying abroad means an opportunity to enhance my academic journey and provide me with invaluable personal growth. I am confident that this experience will not only enrich my understanding of the world but also shape me into a more culturally competent and globally minded person.”

student smiling

Melanie Flores , a third-year speech & hearing science major from Carol Stream, Illinois, will study abroad on the IES Internships Santiago program .“I am most excited about learning about Chilean culture! I want to explore, learn about their history and geography, and improve my confidence in my Spanish skills.

I chose this program because I want to support the Latino community as much as I can in my future career and this experience will prepare me to do so. I have always wanted to go to Chile, and one of my friends did it this past summer and loved it, so I knew I should not be afraid to try something new.

Studying abroad is important to me because it is an opportunity to gain new perspectives and grow. There are so many things to see and experience outside of the Midwest and reading about it or seeing it online will never be the same as seeing it in person.”

student smiling

Skylar Hoffman , a third-year social work major from Davenport, Iowa, will study abroad on the Cultures of Spain program .

“I’m so excited to be immersed in a new language, culture, and way of life.

I am minoring in Spanish, and as a native English speaker, I knew I wanted to experience language immersion through a study abroad program. I knew this program would be the perfect fit for me because most of our time abroad will be spent not in the classroom being lectured, but actually immersing ourselves into Spanish history and culture by traveling to cultural heritage sites around the country with a small group of students and a professor who is from Spain.

Studying abroad is important to me because I want and need to experience ways of life that are new and different to me. I also have a love of languages and novel experiences. We only get to live once, and I want to experience and learn everything I can while I can.”

student smiling

Rayna Kauffman , a second-year nursing major from Lake Zurich, Illinois, will study abroad on the Iowa Hispanic Institute program .

“I picked my program based on hearing amazing things from my peers that went before me and the number of credits it provides towards a Spanish minor. I chose this specific program because it was faculty-led and will allow me to complete my minor this summer.

Studying abroad is important to me because it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you can only take during your college years. You get to travel with your peers while meeting new people.”

student smiling

Kennedy Lein , a fourth-year journalism & mass communication major from Carroll, Iowa, will study abroad on the USAC San Sebastian program.

“I am most excited to meet new people and to take the surfing course for my program. I chose this program because San Sebastian looked absolutely gorgeous and because I have heard that is a very safe and fun place to be.

Studying abroad is important to me because I have never been out of the country alone. I graduate in fall 2024, and I feel like I have never been fully independent. I feel like I need this experience to prove to myself that I will be fine in the real world. I am just so excited to experience a new place and meet new people.”

student smiling

Sofia Manzano , a fourth-year Spanish and international studies double major from West Des Moines, Iowa, will study abroad on the Iowa Hispanic Institute program .

“I chose this destination and program because it will allow me to continue strengthening my Spanish language skills (written and spoken), learn in a different cultural context and broaden my perspectives and worldview. I haven't had the opportunity to fully immerse myself into a complete Spanish-speaking country before and would like to be able to test my Spanish skills while in Spain. Additionally, my grandparents on my father's side are originally from Spain and I'd like to visit the place where they grew up and learn more about my family's heritage. This program will prepare me for my post-grad endeavors as I plan to apply to NALCAP (North American Language and Culture Assistants) program in which I would work as an English language assistant in Spain.”

student smiling

Daniel Mendez , a third-year marketing and business analytics & information systems double major from Chicago, Illinois, will study abroad on the CIMBA Italy program .

“I am thrilled about the opportunity to explore Europe, immerse myself in diverse cultures, and connect with other students. Traveling to another country has always been a dream of mine, and doing so while earning my degree really feels like a huge win.

I chose the CIMBA program because it offers courses that align perfectly with my major. Studying abroad will be a cornerstone for my future career in international business. It will allow me to gain firsthand experience with global markets and understand diverse economic environments. I believe that real world exposure to different business practices and cultural settings is crucial for a comprehensive education in the International Business field.”

student smiling

Jessica Miller , a fourth-year chemistry major from Justice, Illinois, will study abroad on the Sustainable Chemistry Along the Rhine River program.

“I have never left the country before, so leaving the United States for the first time will be an experience full of personal growth and discovery. I have been a student at the University of Iowa that prioritizes campus engagement, there have been so many areas that have grown my Hawkeye pride. I am excited to share my pride for Iowa with the world!

I chose the study abroad program, Sustainable Chemistry Along the Rhone River, due to its direct alignment with my anticipated career in pharmacology and drug development. The opportunity to visit three countries over a two-week span while incorporating so many educational aspects, is a once in a lifetime opportunity I could not miss!”

student smiling

Nancy Nahra , a third-year computer science and English & creative writing double major from Coralville, Iowa, will study abroad on the Irish Writing Program .

“I'm most excited about the opportunity to watch live plays in Dublin and dabble in archival research as my peers and I explore Ireland's countryside.

I chose to apply for the Irish Writing Program because I was interested in the variety of experiences I'd be exposed to. Not only is it an opportunity to travel and write (two things I love), but it's also a chance to learn more about colonialism, Celtic culture and folklore, the importance of Ireland's unique geographical features to its literature, and many more!

Studying abroad is an important experience to me (and any writer really) because I believe that being pushed into unfamiliar spaces forces one to pay extra close attention to the world, which serves as a launching point for creativity and transforming experiences into language.”

student smiling

Katie Nguyen , a fourth-year finance and business analytics & information systems double major from West Des Moines, Iowa, will study abroad on the IES Internships Milan program.

“I am the most thrilled about my opportunity to intern at Costanzo e Associati as a financial analyst and immersing myself in Italian culture. I'm very eager to collaborate with a diverse team of colleagues, gain insights into international business practices, and contribute to the development of meaningful projects to make a real-world impact during my time abroad.

With this experience abroad, I am acquiring knowledge and insights of the international business market that couldn't be gained through an internship within the U.S. With Milan being the financial and economic capital of Europe and my combined career interest of finance and data analytics--I am confident that this experience will provide me with the potential of not just professional but personal growth necessary to achieve my long-term aspirations.”

student smiling

Elizabeth Von Loh , a third-year English & creative writing and religious studies double major from Woodlands, Texas, will study abroad on the Irish Writing Program.

“I’m most excited about exploring Dublin and the surrounding areas. I picked the Irish Writing Program because it provides the chance to learn about Irish literature within its culture and to find inspiration from Dublin itself for my own stories."

Cranston’s juliana nguyen awarded prestigious boren award to study abroad.

Scholarship will support Nguyen’s study of language in Vietnam

study abroad scholarships for phd

KINGSTON, R.I.—May 13, 2024—Juliana Nguyen, of Cranston, is one of four University of Rhode Island students who will travel abroad this summer as a David L. Boren Award recipient. The Boren Awards are a highly selective federal government scholarship program that supports foreign language and cultural study to promote greater understanding between nations.

Nguyen will receive a Boren Scholarship worth up to $25,000 to support her study of Vietnamese, including tuition, travel and room and board in Vietnam.

A first-generation college student, who is majoring in computer science and minoring in business, Nguyen started at URI in fall of 2020 during peak-COVID. While that period was somewhat isolating, she managed to make some friends via Zoom with students who were in her dorm. By the spring semester she had begun working in the Carothers Library and found MakerspaceURI. She later met Keith Ranaldi, director of the URI Library Innovation Labs .

Nguyen grew up speaking Vietnamese and was connected to her culture thanks to her parents and grandmother who had immigrated to the United States—but she always wanted to hone her language skills.

She decided to apply for a Boren Scholarship after a study-abroad experience in South Korea last summer interning at an e-sports company allowed her to utilize her skills conducting outreach to the company’s Vietnamese market.

“I loved Korea. It was an amazing experience and made me realize I wanted to travel more—but also that it was important to me to improve my Vietnamese,” said Nguyen.

She will first travel to Wisconsin in June, where she will undertake intense study of the language at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through mid-August, before departing for Hanoi that same month. Nguyen will stay with a host family in Vietnam while studying at the University of Languages and International Studies, part of the Vietnam National University in Hanoi, through December.

“I feel like this is something that I have always wanted,” said Nguyen. “Growing up, there wasn’t really the opportunity to learn Vietnamese in a more formal classroom setting and I was envious of other people my age who were also first-generation students growing up in a dual language family—that they were able to master the language and achieve true fluency, including reading and writing.”

She credits Ranaldi with connecting her to Kathleen Maher in URI’s Office of National Fellowships and Academic Opportunities . Maher opened her eyes to different scholarship and study abroad opportunities like the Boren, as well as potential career opportunities abroad for someone with her academic background.

Nguyen hopes to be able to use the experience as a springboard to continue her studies—including mastering Spanish, visiting new countries, and potentially exploring a career in government cybersecurity domestically or utilizing her hard skills at a U.S. embassy abroad.

The David L. Boren Awards are among the most prestigious study abroad awards offered to U.S. college students. The National Security Education Program, a federal initiative to expand the pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills, sponsors the awards. In exchange for funding, recipients agree to work for the federal government for at least one year. URI has produced 48 Boren Scholars since the inception of the award program, with 44 being selected since 2010.

URI students interested in applying for the Boren Awards should contact  Kathleen Maher , director of the URI Office of National Fellowships and Academic Opportunities, for more information.
