When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

Advantages and Uses of Mobile Phones

Mobile phones, which were luxury possessions not until a decade ago, have now become a necessity for the common man. The entry of private service providers with CDMA, GSM, and of course, 3G, and 4G technologies have changed the communication sector beyond imagination. Mobiles have become an essential commodity in day-to-day life. It has become an unavoidable thing in almost all aspects of human activity.

Many new competitors have entered the mobile market resulting in a reduction of the STD rates and local call rates. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) enables mobile users to switch over to other service providers without changing their numbers.

The number of mobile users has increased tremendously in the last decade. Even rural areas of densely populated countries like India and Bangladesh have been connected to the mobile network. Mobile phones are now in the hands of people of all ages and professions. Young people, in particular, have welcomed and embraced smartphones with open arms.

The decrease in call rates can be imagined from the fact that it cost around 16 rupees per minute when mobiles were introduced in India and today it costs as little as 1 paisa per 2 seconds. Even the size of mobile phones has become smaller and the design has become more user-friendly within a very short time. They were like walkie-talkies when they were introduced. The shape of those phones just a few years ago now makes people laugh.

A mobile phone has versatile uses. It allows us to call anyone from anywhere, send text messages to anyone when they are busy, send and receive emails, surf the internet, set alarm clocks, check the time, use calculators, keep a presence on social media like Facebook and Twitter , set reminders, keep notes , make voice calls, video calls and send pictures, videos and messages to any part of the world with apps like WhatsApp .

Navigation apps like Google Maps on mobile phones guide us when we travel to unfamiliar areas. Modern smartphones have high-resolution cameras, so we can take clear pictures of any scene. Due to the easy availability of mobile phones, mobile banking has now been introduced, which has made money transactions much easier and hassle-free. Now we don’t have to look for hawkers to know the news from home and abroad because one can read newspapers of any country and any language in the world right now on a smartphone. The role of a mobile phone in entertainment is even greater. It includes listening to music, watching movies, enjoying dramas, movies, or religious ceremonies, and attending various live shows.

Mobile phone, the small and light device, has revolutionized people’s lives. Today, anyone with a phone can be available around the clock and get up-to-date information on anything. Especially, the availability of the internet on mobile phones has greatly increased its usefulness. This has brought speed in trade and commerce. A rural farmer in India or Tunisia can now learn the rates in the remote market through a cellphone and sell his fruits, crops, and vegetables at reasonable prices. The convenience of sending content enables one person to send a message without actually bothering others.

In fact, the mobile phone is a wonder of science . It has connected all the people of the world with each other. Today every person is constantly connected with every other person and place. Having a mobile phone in one’s hand means that he is carrying his house, his office, his shop, and his bank in his hand. Therefore, it can be claimed that no other scientific invention has been able to influence human civilization and way of life as extensively as mobile phones.

Introduction: Nowadays, cellular telephone or mobile phone service is available almost everywhere. It is a type of short-wave analog or digital telecommunication in which a client has a wireless connection from a mobile telephone to a nearby transmitter. A span of transmitter coverage is called a cell. When a cellular telephone user moves from one cell or coverage area to another, his telephone also moves to the local cell transmitter.

Invention and History of Commercial Use: The first hand-held mobile phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, which weighed 2 kg. A decade later, in 1973, mobile phones or cellular phones were introduced for commercial use. The phone, a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, weighed 2 pounds, offered just a half-hour of talk time for every recharging, and sold for about 4000 US dollars. Nowadays modern mobile phones, often called smartphones, are very light (less than 100 grams) and stylish, can work seamlessly for about 15 hours, and prices can range from just $20 to $100. In the twenty years from 1990 to 2010, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 4.6 billion.

How Mobile Phone Works: Nowadays, cellular phones make use of the cellular network concept, where frequencies are re-used repeatedly within a city area. It allows many more users to share access to the radio bandwidth. A mobile phone allows calls to be placed over a wide geographic area. It can make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed-line phones across the world. It does this by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile network operator.

Other Services: In addition to telephony, modern mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, MMS, email, Internet access, short-range wireless communications (infrared, Bluetooth), business applications, gaming, and photography. Mobile phones that offer these more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

Mobile Phones in Bangladesh: Citycell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first company to provide mobile phone service in Bangladesh and the only CDMA mobile operator in the country. At present, the leading mobile phone companies in the country are GrameenPhone (GP), Robi, Banglalink, Citycell, Airtel, and Teletalk. The total number of active subscribers of mobile phones in Bangladesh has reached 180 million at the end of 2021.

Uses of Mobile Phone: Mobile phone has made our life much easier. It has played an important role in improving connectivity among people. Now we can contact other people with surety and much convenience. It has also made business and commercial activities much easier by providing better communication.

Abuses of Mobile Phone: We can also find some drawbacks of mobile phones. It is often misused by criminals. They use this technology for criminal activities such as abduction, terrorism, robbery, theft, etc.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

Should Teenagers Have Mobile Phones? Essay

Introduction, mobile phones for teenagers: negative impacts.

Mobile phones, which were invented a few decades ago, have become important communication devices utilized by society members of all ages. One age group that has made persistent use of mobile phones is teenagers. Teenagers’ overuse of phones has had a marked effect on their school lives. This paper will address the negative impacts that mobile phones are having on teenagers’ school life.

Mobile phones impose financial pressures on teenagers since these devices act as status symbol objects. Campbell (2005) confirms that most teenagers have the desire to upgrade their phones in order to fit in with their peers.

Since most teenagers do not have a source of income, they have to rely on their families to buy them phones and pay the phone bills. This raises issues of financial disputes and some teenagers end up stealing money from their parents to spend on their phones.

Teenagers use mobile phones to aid in cheating during exams. Students use their cell phones to communicate with each other during exams and therefore obtain answers to the test questions. Students can also cheat by getting answers from their phone memory or the internet.

Campbell (2005) documents that while teenagers have always engaged in cheating; mobile phones have increased the level of sophistication in cheating and decreased the chances of the misconduct being detected by the teacher.

Mobile phones are also problematic in school since they increase the level of disruption. Research indicates that teenagers are reluctant to switch off their phones while in class and this leads to learning activity being disrupted when the student receives a call or a text (Campbell, 2005).

Even when the student does not access his/her mobile phone, the excitement of finding out what the message is about results in the student losing interest in the class leading to poor academic outcomes.

Mobile phones have significant negative impacts on teenagers’ school life. This paper has demonstrated that mobile phones cause financial difficulties, enhance cheating, and disrupt lessons. Parents and teachers should therefore forbid teenagers from having mobile phones in school.

Cell Phone Essay

In this cell phone essay you have to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the way in which cell phones and the internet dominate the ways in which people relate to each other socially.

This is the question:

These days, cell (mobile) phones and the internet are very important to the ways in which people relate to one another socially.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Analysing the Question

This is a type of question that has appeared in the IELTS test a few times:

  • The impacts of technology on the way we communicate with each other

With IELTS essay questions, you always need to note carefully exactly what you are being asked to write about.

In this case it is about cell / mobile phones and the internet . So you must write about both . Sometimes an essay may just ask you about one or the other.

This is also important in this cell phone essay:

  • 'The way in which people communicate with each other socially'

simple essay of cell phone

You are  not  being asked about work situations but social situations. So you should  not  talk about how these types of technology have impacted on organisations or workers.

You are also being asked if there are  more advantages or disadvantages . So you must clearly state your opinion on this and also write about both in your cell phone essay (as the suggestion is that there are both).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Cell Phone Essay Model Answer

It is rare these days to find someone who does not communicate and interact with others through a cell phone or the internet as they are widespread throughout society. I believe that the benefits of this development outweigh the drawbacks.

One main negative consequence of this development is that people may have become disconnected in relation to conversing with each other face-to-face. People now tend to use their cell phones or the internet to communicate, but rather than actually speaking, they send a message. Some of the most popular applications are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Line, all of which encourage messaging. The result of this is that people may lack the benefits of engaging with others in conversation and the closeness this brings.

Despite this, there are several important advantages as well. Firstly, the internet and cell phones mean that people can stay connected however far away they are from each other. For instance, these days, many people live in different countries or go travelling in different countries. Cell phones and the internet mean that parents can easily keep in touch with their children who are on holiday and people who immigrate to live abroad can easily communicate with their loved ones when needed. In addition to this, the internet means that people also interact with strangers and increase their knowledge of other cultures because through such things as Facebook, people connect to all sorts of people around the world, becoming friends and also discussing and exchanging knowledge.

In conclusion, although a disadvantage of the internet and cell phones is the lack of face-to-face conversation, they have improved the way we can stay in contact with loved ones and exchange ideas with new people. Overall then, this is a positive development for society.

Short Essay on Telephone in 100 Words

The telephone was one of the most important gadgets in our daily life even a decade ago. It is the most essential device to maintain communication between two corners of the world. Around 150 years ago, in 1876, Scottish engineer – scientist Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone. With this invention, the contemporary communication industry saw a revolutionary transformation.

Though telecommunication used to be pretty much complicated and costly back then. But with modern scientific advancement Telephones reached almost every urban household of India by the beginning of the 21st century. With more technological advancement telephones became wireless and modernized. Then gradually mobile phones came into the picture by the middle of the first decade of this century and replaced traditional landline telephones.

Short Essay on Telephone in 200 Words

Even around two decades ago, people could hardly imagine their life without traditional telephones. The telephone was the primary mean of our modern communication. Before the invention of the Telephone, we used to write letters and send telegrams to communicate with our friends and relatives. But the telephone brought the entire world closer to us, making our closed people’s voices audible. The person who made this magic possible is Sir Alexander Graham Bell. The invention of the Telephone paved the way for a revolution in communication.

With time and scientific advancements, Telephones became much modernised. At the very beginning, it was very difficult to establish telecommunication networks. So making calls was not so easy either. Moreover, the size and design of those first-generation telephones were also less practical. But with the beginning of the 20th century, everything around the Telecommunication industry started changing. By the second half of the century, telephones started using wireless communication network systems. With more scientific advancement in the telecommunication industry, mobile phones came into the picture.

Telephones have enormous contributions to our lives. Making communication easier this gadget contributes to various industries and creates millions of job opportunities. So, in this modern era without telephones, our life will be nothing but deep into utter darkness.

Short Essay on Telephone in 400 Words

The word telephone is derived from two different Greek words. One is ‘Tele’ that means far and the next one is ‘phone’ which refers to sound/voice. From the late 19th century the race had begun to make the first machine that could transmit human voice from one place to another. By the mid-1800s’ an Italian inventor named  Antonio Mauci became nearly successful in making such a machine.

He named it a ‘Sound Telegraph’. But in 1876, Scottish engineer Alexander Graham Bell invented the first Tele-talking machine called Telephone. He made the first call in history from one floor to another and talked to his friend.

Though the first telephone was nothing sort of as we see it today. It was comparatively large in size and there were many kinds of difficulties to be resolved in it. But with time and modern scientific advancement traditional, basic telephones were modernised. From the mid 20th century, engineers started trying to use more advanced technologies to make telephones multi-functional. Gradually the design of telephones became practical and a few additional gadgets were also invented to make telephones a bit smarter.

Compared to the time, no matter how smart the telephone actually became, it still had one basic problem. A person still couldn’t carry a telephone along with him. After long research, engineers of Motorola first created a portable phone in 1973. They named it a Mobile Telephone. This is how the journey of the modern telephone started.

The invention of the mobile telephone revolutionized the telecommunication industry. Gradually with technological advancement and increasing affordability, mobile phones have now completely replaced the traditional telephone.

India got its first telephone during the ‘British Raj’ on 28th January 1882. The first ‘telephone exchange’ was established in contemporary Calcutta. Three telephone exchange offices were established later in the three main cities of British India. But telephone service was limited to military usage and highly rich people till even the early post-independence period. Only from the last quarter of the 20th-century, the telephone service started being available for common Indian people. Landline telephone reached many urban households till the end of the century.

The telephone has affected human civilization extensively till after its invention. The world saw extensive usage of telephones for military purposes in two consequent world wars. It helped people to bring the long-distance closer and eliminated the time gap from between. Nowadays, the modern mobile telephone has reached such a stage where it’s being used for almost all purposes.

So, that was all to write in an essay about Telephones. Hopefully, after going through this lesson, you have understood everything about writing short essays on Telephones and will be able to write such essays yourself.

How to turn your iPhone into a bare-bones device

A simple setting can turn your iphone into a kid’s phone, ipod or help cut your screen time.

simple essay of cell phone

Our smartphones are overflowing. In one pocket-size rectangle, you have unlimited access to all human knowledge posted online, instant communication with friends and family, and six seasons of “Love Is Blind.”

It can be a bit much.

A recently added setting on iPhones and iPads makes the devices less complicated. It can turn a smartphone into a feature phone, a landline replacement, a kid’s phone and even an iPod. Called Assistive Access, the setting was introduced in September in iOS 17 as an accessibility option for people with cognitive disabilities. Like many accessibility features, it has potentially beneficial applications for everyone.

When activated, it switches to a bare-bones home screen that shows one or more apps as larger-than-usual icons. It makes smartphones and tablets easier to navigate by minimizing the number of options and adding more visual-based controls.

How to set it up

Assistive Access works on any iPad or iPhone that runs iOS 17. If you have an old iPhone, you can update the OS and repurpose it, or buy a compatible used device starting at $100 to $200 online. Once iOS 17 is installed, go to Settings → Accessibility → Assistive Access (in the General section at the bottom). You will be walked through instructions on setting it up.

Five Apple apps have been simplified in this mode: Calls (a combination of the Phone and FaceTime apps), Camera, Messages, Music and Photos. You can include any other apps, and most will ask privacy questions when you add them. All apps will appear slightly smaller in this mode with a large “Back” button below.

Choose whether you want the apps in a list or grid form. You can customize a few other options, such as whether the battery level shows, if Siri is on and if the volume buttons work. The device will still get notifications for other apps, so turn them off entirely or be ready to exit Assistive Access mode to check them.

You will set a passcode that is required to exit the mode. If you need to securely set up this phone for someone else to use, choose a password they won’t know or guess, and make it different from the passcode to unlock the phone. Triple-click the side button to exit.

If you’re looking for speed or a mode you can hop in and out of frequently, this is not the best choice. More traditional controls, such as screen time or focus modes, might work better. Assistive Access is slow to navigate and turn on and off.

A safe phone for kids

Many parents want a kid-friendly phone that lets them make calls without the trappings of a smartphone. Options include feature phones with keypads and kid devices such as Gizmo and Gabb, but depending on their age, your child may be embarrassed to be seen with these. If your family is in the Apple ecosystem and you have an old phone, try this as a compromise.

Assistive Access is like parental controls turned all the way up. Apple has extensive built-in controls, but setting them up and managing them isn’t simple — and kids are constantly finding workarounds. This mode offers tighter limitations and easier use. Many parental controls like website restrictions will still work when a device is in Assistive Access mode and should be properly set up first. Some apps can still allow plenty of access to the internet in this mode.

When setting up the device for a child, choose Selected Contacts in the calling and messaging apps to handpick the contacts for incoming and outgoing calls. If the device doesn’t have a SIM card, choose Select Contact, the name of the person you want to approve, and tap Call to choose FaceTime or another app that allows WiFi calling such as WhatsApp or Viber. Show the child how to call emergency services.

A simple phone for seniors

If you or an older family member is struggling with using a smartphone, this mode can be less confusing or intimidating than the usual layout, and it can minimize mistakes. If you’re setting it up for someone else, always explain what you’re doing and get permission when possible. Apple’s satellite SOS feature does not work in this mode, but people can use the phone to dial emergency services either on the keypad or by triple-clicking the side button on most devices. Health tracking and sharing features still work.

A music-only device

Remember the iPod? The Discman? The Walkman? People who want an audio-only device have a few options, such as Mighty or Yoto . Or you can take an older iPhone or iPad and allow only music apps. If you have an existing digital music library, you can load it into the device since the storage isn’t being used for other apps. If you want to take it for a jog or drive, most music apps allow downloads for offline listening so no need to pay for cellular service. If it’s for children, add headphones if you don’t want to hear their music, and make sure you have turned on any parental controls in the services. (Yes, even music and audiobook apps have inappropriate content.)

A home phone

Landlines are dwindling with fewer than a quarter of Americans still using them. There are advantages to having a central home telephone that anyone can use, such as letting a child call 911. If you don’t want to get a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) line, you can use an old iPhone. For this use, you will want to add an extra line to your cellular plan. While you can set up the device with apps such as WhatsApp and Viber that allow WiFi-based calls, or only contact people who use FaceTime, it’s safest to have a cellular connection for emergencies. You can dial 911 from a phone in the United States even when it doesn’t have a SIM card.

A less-distracting phone

Many people struggle with their phone usage, so much so that tech companies have screen time controls meant to help us use their products less. On the iPhone, there are options for setting time limits on apps and getting weekly reports about how much time you spend on your device. That’s not enough for everyone, and some are switching back to feature phones or “ dumbphones ,” such as classic flip phones — or are trying other ways to block themselves from being on devices too much.

“I think a lot of people are interested in [stepping back], but I think very few people are able to succeed,” said Jose Briones , a 28-year-old digital minimalism advocate in Colorado.

Assistive Access is an extreme option that can help with the self-control aspect, especially if you have someone else set up the passcode. Choose only the apps you need and don’t include your usual time wasters. You can find a list of culprits by going to Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity and looking at your most used apps.

“At the end of the day, you have to come to a decision point,” Briones said. “Am I going to rely on self-control all the time, or am I going to eliminate myself from this environment?”

Best Cell Phones for Seniors in 2024

Our top picks.

Jitterbug Smart4 from Lively

Consumer Cellular IRIS Flip

iPhone 15 from AT&T

Did you know that 92 percent of U.S. adults age 65 and older own a cell phone? 1

If you’re in the market for a new phone, we can help! You know just how many options there are on the market if you’ve ever shopped for a cell phone; it can feel endless. To make it easier for you, our team of experts narrowed the search to 25 cell phones for seniors by eliminating options that did not meet our standard criteria. After over 300 hours of research, online shopping, conversations with customer service, and hands-on testing, we chose our seven finalists as the best cell phones for seniors.

Our Methodology

How we chose the best phones for seniors.

My grandma trying out the Jitterbug Smart4

Each phone on this list was ranked using several metrics, including price, senior-friendly features, battery life, durability, sound quality, appearance, ease of use, and provider perks. The three most influential metrics in our evaluation were:

  • Senior-friendly features: All phones that made the cut have features that meet seniors’ specific needs and lifestyles. While these features vary by phone, they include big buttons or icons, bright screens, loud and adjustable speakers, hearing aid compatibility, and an easy-to-grip design.
  • No long-term contracts: Cell phone plans that lock you in for years are a thing of the past. All of the cell phone models and carriers on our list offer month-to-month options, so you can cancel your service at any time without any extra hassle.
  • Price vs. quality: We know that every budget is different. While some cell phones for seniors on our list are more expensive than others, we’ve included only phones whose quality matches or exceeds the price. We’ve made sure to include budget-friendly cell phones on our list, along with somewhat pricier high-tech devices, so you can find the phone that’s right for both your wallet and your needs.

How We Tested the Best Phones for Seniors

I’ve spent countless hours speaking with seniors, learning about their likes and dislikes, concerns, and questions about phones in general. To get a more hands-on look at how older adults feel about different phones, I had my grandma test out many of the phones with me! During this process, we unpacked each phone, used it over a period of two weeks, and tested out all the features, such as taking photos, speakerphone volume, hearing aid connectivity, and ease of navigation. We also spent time speaking with customer service and researching the phones online to get a well-rounded picture of each device. Afterward, we discussed what we liked and disliked about each, eventually compiling all of this information to create our list of the best senior-friendly phones!

Other Good Cell Phones for Seniors

It’s possible that none of the phones outlined above meets your needs. If that’s the case, we wanted to include a few more options for phones that we really liked but didn’t quite make the cut:

  • Samsung Galaxy S23: A good Android phone for tech-savvy seniors
  • RAZ Mobility Memory Phone: A phone specifically designed for seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or cognitive decline; check out our RAZ Mobility review to learn more.
  • Motorola Moto G Power 5G: A budget-friendly 5G smartphone with ample storage and features

Cell Phone Carriers for Seniors

Not every carrier is designed specifically for seniors, like Lively or Consumer Cellular , but many offer special deals and discounts for older adults. Here’s a breakdown of our picks for the best cell phone carriers for seniors .

  • Consumer Cellular: Consumer Cellular specifically designs all of its plans and offerings around the needs of older adults. This makes it an easy carrier to navigate as a senior, especially if you want affordable premiums and no contracts.
  • Lively: Lively is another carrier that specializes in phones and plans just for older adults. If you’re willing to pay a bit extra each month, Lively can even turn your phone into a medical alert device.
  • AT&T: AT&T is a solid mobile carrier with a large coverage area. However, it’s not quite as senior-friendly as other carriers since you can access AT&T’s 55+ plan only if you live in Florida. Still, the carrier offers plenty of other plans for those who live outside of Florida.

Cell Phones for Seniors Buying Guide

There are a variety of phones on the market for older adults, so how do you choose the one that’s right for you? Check out our guide to choosing a senior-friendly phone below for all of our tips and tricks.

Do I want a basic phone or a smartphone?

Basic options, like flip phones and brick-style phones, allow you to send texts, make calls, and take pictures, and you can add a few extra features if you like. There’s no pressure to get a smartphone just because it’s what your grandkids or friends have, especially if you’re on a tight budget. On the other hand, if you want a phone with all the latest features, like mobile apps, video chatting, internet access, GPS tracking, and a touch screen, you’ll want a smartphone.

Pro Tip: If you’re still having trouble deciding, compare our list of the best smartphones for seniors and the best flip phones for seniors .

What is my budget?

When choosing a cell phone, you’ll need to account for any upfront device costs in your budget, as well as the monthly price for a talk, text, and/or data plan. Also, check if the provider charges extra fees for things like activation or shipping.

If you want a smartphone with all of the latest features but your budget is only $50 for a device, you’ll need to reconsider. Basic flip phones start at about $30 and can go up to around $100, depending on the provider and features. Basic smartphones begin at around $150 and may cost up to $1,000 or more for advanced options, like the latest iPhone. Many providers will allow you to pay off your phone in monthly installments, so if that’s better for your budget, it’s an option to consider.

What type of phone plan do I want?

If you walk into a phone store and buy a phone, you may feel overwhelmed by all the information provided to you about phone plan options. For this reason, it’s a good idea to know what kind of plan you prefer in advance. Generally, there are two types of phone plans: prepaid and postpaid.

» Compare Your Options: Best prepaid phone plans for seniors

With a prepaid plan, you pay ahead of time for what you plan to use. This type of plan can be less expensive, but it often comes with fewer features and may have caps on the amount of data or minutes you can use. Alternatively, a postpaid plan allows you to use the service for the plan you’ve chosen and pay your bill at the end of the month. A postpaid plan may require a contract, but it often allows you to enjoy more perks, like unlimited data, texting, and calling.

Do I need medical alert capabilities?

You’ll need to decide if you just want a senior-friendly phone that comes with standard calling, texting, and data, or one that’s designed with medical alert features. These features include fall detection, an emergency help button, 24/7 monitoring, location tracking, and other health and safety add-ons. If you want a phone that’s easy to use and you’re not concerned about medical alert capabilities, there’s no need to purchase a phone with these features or monthly monitoring charges. However, if you’re looking for the added protection that a medical alert device offers, you may want a phone with these features.

Do I want a phone with internet access?

The more basic cell phones offer texting and calling only, while more advanced options allow you to add a data plan and internet access for a monthly fee. If you want to surf the web, use social media and other mobile apps, or watch shows on your phone, you’ll need to look for a phone that offers data. On the other hand, if you want to stick to the basics, there’s no need to pay for a data plan that you won’t use.

Did You Know? There are plenty of senior discounts for phone and internet service. Our senior discount page has over 100 discounts to explore.

What features are most important to me?

The features cell phones offer are endless, so it’s important to establish what exactly you’re looking for. Do you want a phone that features a high-quality camera, medical alert capabilities, and a touch screen? Or maybe you’re looking for a flip phone with internet access and hearing aid compatibility. Whatever it is you want, make a list before starting your search to narrow down your options.

That said, there are a few features that you should look for in any senior-friendly phone:

  • Large buttons and screen
  • Voice-to-text functionality
  • Ability to zoom in or increase the font size
  • Loud speaker
  • Hearing aid compatibility
  • Touch ID or Face ID
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Virtual assistant
  • Easy-to-grip design

Keep in mind that not every phone will have all of these features. For example, if you want a traditional flip phone, you likely won’t be able to enjoy zoom-in features or Touch ID accessibility. However, choosing a phone that has at least some of these senior-friendly features increases the chances you’ll select a phone that meets your needs.

The 8 Best Dumb Phones of 2024

If you want a mobile phone for the basics—for voice calls and the occasional text—these are the smartest options available now.

easyfone, punkt, nokia flip, lively jitterbug, kyocera dumb phones

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

A dumb phone is essentially an old-fashioned “feature” clamshell—or candybar-style phone—equipped only with a small, non-touch display and a physical numerical keypad which was the norm before the iPhone . A dumb phone, however, isn’t actually dumb at all, considering the advanced and sophisticated technology packed within its plastic housing. In fact, it might be an especially smart choice to protect impressionable children from social media or to allow tech-averse seniors to stay in touch.

I’ve researched and compared every dumb phone available and narrowed down the best ones based on voice performance, not-so-dumb features like music playback, web access, GPS mapping capability, price, and carrier and network compatibility. Here are the phones to buy now.

Best Dumb Phones

  • Best Overall Dumb Phone: Nokia 2780 Flip
  • Best Basic Dumb Phone: Nokia 110 4G
  • Best Unlocked Dumb Phone for Seniors: Easyfone Prime A7
  • Best Dumb Phone for Seniors with Service: Lively Jitterbug Flip2
  • Best Rugged Dumb Phone: Kyocera DuraXV Extreme E4810
I’ve been reporting on, using, and reviewing cell and smartphones dating back to their introduction in the early 1980s, and still own many breakthrough and historical models.

What to Consider in a Dumb Phone

Mostly sub-$100, and flip or candy bar-style in design, a dumb phone is equipped with a 3x4 numerical keyboard that looks unchanged from any cell phone available since the late 1990s/early 2000s. Most dumb phones have a rudimentary web browser, music player, map, messaging, calendar, and other basic apps, although these all may be more difficult to navigate without a touch screen or even see on the less than 3-inch low resolution screens typically found on these phones.

While many dumb phones include a camera, they’re usually capable of capturing only low-resolution images or video.

More to Consider: Best Flip Phones • Best MagSafe Cases • Best Phones for Kids • 57 Best Tech Gifts to Impress Anyone in Your Life

Dumb phone standby battery life—the time the phone will retain power while not being used— is often measured in days rather than hours, so it will not need to be recharged as often as a smartphone unless you do a LOT of talking. Dumb phone talk time battery life ranges between 5- and 10 hours, depending on the model.

With increasing demand for dumb phones, there is a growing number of more expensive “minimalist” phones. These pricier models offer more attractive designs and better build quality, in addition to more advanced security features, improved voice call quality and speakerphones, higher resolution cameras, and better Bluetooth and wireless music capability. They merely lack the apps that sap your time and attention.

Connectivity

Only a limited number of dumb phones are sold directly by the three major United States cell providers—AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon—or by pre-paid carriers such as Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Mint, Tello, Ultra, and Visible. Most dumb phones are “unlocked,” meaning they’ll operate on a wide variety of networks. If you’re already a subscriber to a cell provider, however, make sure the dumb phone you choose is compatible; many dumb phones won’t work on Verizon’s network, for instance.

Also check that the dumb phone you choose operates on a 4G cellular network. Avoid any model designed to run on 3G or 2G networks—AT&T and T-Mobile shut down their U.S. 3G networks in Spring 2022 and Verizon turned off its 3G network at the end of 2022.

Older cell phones that are only compatible with 3G or even older 2G networks won't be able to receive calls or text, including to 911, according to the Federal Communications Commission . No dumb phone operates on the latest 5G networks, which are designed primarily to increase the speed of data connections largely unnecessary on a dumb phone.

Most dumb phones include Wi-Fi for rudimentary internet access for web access or texting, as well as Bluetooth for wireless head/earphone connectivity.

How We Selected Dumb Phones

Most sub-$100 dumb phones look and perform similarly. I looked for 4G models with long battery life, high call quality, more rugged builds to better withstand inadvertent drops, drips, and dunks, and supplementary features such as a camera, GPS, or music playback, in addition to price.

Nokia 2780 Flip

2780 Flip

You get a lot more than expected with this sub-$100 Nokia 2780 flip phone, especially if you just plan to use it for voice conversation. You get access to the latest 4G voice technologies to create clear conversations with plenty of volume through both the phone’s earpiece and its extra loud speakerphone.

You do get some “smart” features since the 2780 runs KaiOS, and you get a higher resolution camera than usual on a dumb phone. But you might have to more frequently recharge the 2780; while it’s rated talk time is 7 hours, reviewers report you may only get half that.

Nokia 110 4G

110 4G

If your goal is to cheaply simplify your life and confine yourself to wireless calls, this simple and light (3 ounces) Nokia 110 4G is your choice. The 110 uses 4G Voice Over LTE technology to create clear calls, but you may need to use the speakerphone to get decent volume.

Yes, you get other features, but each includes limitations that disincentivize you to use them. For instance, the 110 can text, but limited memory means the phone can’t save many incoming messages and won’t accept more once the memory is full.

Likewise, there’s a “mini” web browser, but with no Wi-Fi you can only access the internet via the slow 4G cellular connection, and you won’t be able to see much on the small 1.8-inch screen. But since the 110 takes only three hours to recharge, you’ll rarely be out of voice contact touch.

Easyfone Prime A7

Prime A7

Those with fading eyesight will love not only the big buttons with large, white, easy-to-read numbers on this new Prime A7 from Easyfone, but they’ll be able speed dial folks via pictures displayed on this candybar phone’s screen.

To help with hearing conversations, the A7 is equipped with a loud speaker, and is hearing aid compatible. There’s also a dedicated emergency SOS button on the back of the phone that both calls for help and transmits your location, just in case. An included charging dock makes recharging easy—no fumbling with loose cables or tiny jacks.

While not necessarily smart, the A7 is equipped with handy features like a camera, FM radio and music player, calculator, even a voice recorder. While the A7 is unlocked for use on T-Mobile’s family of post- and pre-paid networks, you get a SpeedTalk SIM card with plans that start at $5 a month, and you can keep your current phone number.

Lively Jitterbug Flip2

Jitterbug Flip2

While the Easyfone Prime A7 is excellent for seniors, the Jitterbug Flip2, combined with Lively’s cell service may provide peace of mind for both the user and their loved ones. You not only get easy access to a Lyft ride, with a $39.99/month or $49.99/month plan you also get 24/7 customer and health/safety emergency services at the touch of the large “urgent response” red star beneath the phone’s large keypad keys.

The Flip2 phone itself is equipped with a spacious 3.2-inch- color screen and large button/large print numerical keypad. You also get a magnifier and flashlight for easier reading, and relatively high resolution 8 MP rear and 5 MP front selfie cameras. The red edition makes the Flip2 easier to spot in a purse or bag.

Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+

DuraXV Extreme+

There is no phone better able to withstand the elements or your own clumsiness than Kyocera’s DuraXV Extreme+ flip model. It’s Military Standard 810H-rated for resistance to dust, shock, vibration, temperature, icy rain, low pressure, solar radiation, salt, fog, humidity, freeze-thaw and icing-freezing rain.

It’s drop-proof up to 5 feet onto concrete and rated IP68 dustproof and waterproof up to 6.5 feet for up to 30 minutes. It's also approved for use in hazardous locations such as concentrations of flammable gases.

Not only is the DuraXV Extreme+ tough but highly functional, its large keys enable accurate button-pushing with gloves on. Its push-to-talk (PTT) capabilities turn it into a handy walkie-talkie with other DuraXV users. An extra loud speakerphone let’s you conduct conversations in noisier conditions or when holding the phone to your ear isn’t an option, and it can act as a mobile hot spot for up to 10 devices. It provides two days’ worth of talk time battery life.

TCL Classic

Classic

For some reason, TCL has created four different but nearly identical Flip models for each of the three major U.S. carriers, as well as an unlocked version. Regardless of which carrier you prefer, each of the Flips, while varying ever so slightly in battery life and memory specifications, operate on 4G LTE networks. They all also feature two color screens: a 2.8-inch display on the inside and 1.44-inch external display that shows the time, date, and battery status.

Each Flip model offers different battery life, from the above-average 8 hours of talk time on the Flip Pro to the 14 hours of talk time supplied by the Flip Go, but all are equipped with a 2MP camera, and Bluetooth for wireless music listening and handsfree calling.

Around four times the price of standard dumb phones, the Punkt is equipped with a proprietary operating system and other software to create encrypted Internet-based calls and texts via Wi-Fi or your cellular connection to keep your data and calls clear from prying hackers.

Not only does the candybar-styled Punkt keep you digitally safe, its tough construction makes this uniquely designed handset safe from physical harm. Its rubbery trapezoidal rear is easy to grip and its matte polycarbonate chassis is reinforced with glass fiber to protect it if you drop it. To please your personal aesthetic, the Punkt MP02 is available in light blue, light grey, or basic black.

Wisephone II

II

Dumb phones are not supposed to have touch screens. But if you are an avid texter, you absolutely want the alphanumeric keypad displayed on WisePhone II’s large 6.49-inch color touch screen to more easily tap out your missives.

The touch screen on the WisePhone II, an update of the original but no longer available original WisePhone, is good for more than just texting, though. You get full GPS and mapping, a notes app, and a superior viewfinder and display for shooting and showing high resolution pictures—all capabilities lacking in other dumb phones. What you don’t get are all those addictive apps—just the true cellphone basics.

You can pre-order the WisePhone II for delivery this summer, available with three service plans at $24.99, $44.99, and $69.99 to access a wider variety of smart services.

Expert Stewart Wolpin Has the Answers on Digital Detoxing, Privacy, and 911 Functions With Minimalist Phones.

line break listicle

Will a dumb phone help me with a digital detox?

The dumber the phone—if you choose a model that lacks a web browser, email, and social media apps, for instance— the deeper the digital detox you’ll get.

However, given how critical some smartphone features have become—not only basic communications tools like texting but suddenly indispensable higher tech functions such as picture and video taking, GPS mapping, Internet information access, and digital payments—you may find digitally detoxing more challenging than you imagined.

Is a dumb phone a smart way to protect my privacy?

No cellular phone, smart or dumb, is completely secure. Regardless of its intelligence or lack thereof, your mobile phone location can be triangulated and recorded, as any true crime fan can attest.

Plus, your cell provider tracks and records the voice or text numbers dialed or received. Voice calls on less secure networks can even be monitored. But a dumb phone is far less likely to be hacked by identity thieves since it won’t contain a lot of your personal information much beyond your name and phone number.

What 911 or emergency functions will a dumb phone have?

911 can be dialed or reached from any cellular phone, regardless of its intelligence, as long as you can get a cellular or Wi-Fi signal. But some otherwise dumb senior-centric phones often provide a single emergency or SOS button to make accessing emergency services easier and faster.

How long should one of these phones last?

Dumb phones are no more or less susceptible to accident damage or age-related battery life deterioration than a smartphone. What makes a dumb phone “better” than a smartphone where longevity is concerned is not having to worry about a touch screen cracking or breaking, and the low cost and ease of replacement since you don’t need to be concerned about transferring your entire digital life to a new device.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

The moment of totality during a solar eclipse in Glendo, Wyo., on Aug. 21, 2017.

If you plan to check out Monday's total solar eclipse and the only camera you own is one that doubles as a phone, with a little preparation (and precaution) you might still be able to get some relatively good shots.

The eclipse gives astronomy clubs an opportunity to shine

The eclipse gives astronomy clubs an opportunity to shine

"It all depends on how much effort one wants to put into it," says Sean Walker, an associate editor with Sky & Telescope magazine. For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse.

In the U.S., the path of totality for the best views stretches from southern Texas, crossing through the South and Midwest and into the Northeast before hitting Maine. But anyone in the continental U.S. can catch at least a partial eclipse, weather permitting.

Don't look up — look down!

It will be possible to capture interesting images even if you don't live in, or travel to, that swath where the moon will appear to nearly perfectly cover the sun. "If you're within several hundred miles of the path of totality at maximum eclipse time," Walker says, "the spaces between leaves on trees and basically anything that makes a pinhole will project an image of the crescent sun on the ground or on a wall ... depending on how high the sun is at the time."

A photo shows the eclipse projected through the spaces between leaves taken on Aug. 21, 2017, in Glendo, Wyo.

That's a photo that's "all easy peasy with a cellphone," says John Meader, director of Northern Stars Planetarium and Educational Services in Fairfield, Maine. Another option is to shoot the environment around you as it is darkened as the eclipse reaches totality. "Maybe a before and during shot of the same scene to capture the changing light levels," he suggests.

Feeling more ambitious? A tripod is a must

If you're determined to take a direct photo of the eclipse, you will need a bit more preparation.

The key to getting a good photo is "a simple tripod that will hold your cellphone stable so you can take pictures and not wiggle around during the totality," Walker says.

Even so, hitting the shutter button by hand could cause unwanted jiggle. To avoid that, consider a Bluetooth trigger . Or set the camera to "timer mode," giving it a few seconds to settle before it snaps the picture.

Randall Benton, a freelance photographer with a passion for solar eclipses, says the other option is to shoot video "just as the sun is going dark." Although the quality of phone video isn't quite as good as a still image, you can always extract a still from the video later, he says.

For best results, use your phone's manual settings

If you've never fiddled with your camera's settings, now's a good time. You'll want to reduce the exposure, at least during the partial eclipse phase, and also to set focus to "infinity." (Here's how to access manual controls for an iPhone or Android .) If you have a second pair of solar eclipse glasses, you can use them as a filter to cover the camera lens on your phone, Benton says. It will protect your phone's camera from possible damage from long exposure to direct sunlight and give you a more dramatic shot.

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. Here's why

Shots - Health News

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. here's why.

"You want to keep those solar glasses as close against the lens as possible, because most of [them] have a mirror surface on both sides," he explains. If any light leaks in from the sides, "it can reflect off of the back side of the filter and create glare or funny reflections that can spoil the image."

If you're in the path of totality, don't forget to remove the filter when the magic moment arrives. "Try to zoom in, because you're not going to hurt your eyes looking at totality. It's only when the disk of the sun is visible that you really shouldn't be looking at it directly without filtration," Meader says.

Of course, you could always leave the photography to the pros, live in the moment and take in the celestial show.

"While it's great to take your own photos, if this is your first eclipse, really enjoy the experience," Walker says. "When [you] actually experience totality, your mind has a hard time wrapping around that. ... It's just an amazing experience."

Use these tips to help get a great photo of the solar eclipse with just your phone

simple essay of cell phone

The 2024 solar eclipse is April 8 and since a total solar eclipse won't be seen in the United States again until 2044 , you may want to hang onto the memory.

For most people, that will entail reaching for their phone to grab pictures and videos.

The 115-mile  path of totality  will cover portions of the Midwest, the Rust Belt and the Northeast, though most of the country will get to see the moon pass in front of at least a portion of the sun.

Some places will see totality for about four minutes, so being prepared to capture the peak moment is important.

Here are some simple tips to make better photos during the solar eclipse.

Understanding eclipses: Why don't eclipses happen every month? Moon's tilted orbit is the key.

Protect your eyes and your phone

Much the same way one should protect their eyes when watching the eclipse by wearing eclipse glasses , one should protect their phone when taking pictures of it.

For taking casual photos with a phone before or after totality, use solar film or hold eclipse glasses over the lens to protect it. It is easier to keep the protection on during totality, but just as eclipse glasses can be removed from your eyes during totality, the same goes for phone lenses.

Remember to protect both your eyes and your phone. If you are viewing from an area where totality will be reached, eye and lens protection can be removed during those two to four minutes of totality.

If you are using a telescope or binoculars with a phone, use a solar filter to protect against concentrated sunlight.

Samsung recommends using a solar filter when taking longer exposures during the event when using its phones.

Practice ahead of time

Before the eclipse arrives, test any gear — tripods, lens protection, apps, etc. — you plan to use that day. The window to see the moon's shadow is small so you don't want the experience to be felled by technical glitches.

"You think, 'Oh, I'm gonna be like, super prepared,' but it is a big rush," Carly Stocks, a Utah-based astronomical photographer told USA TODAY. "So you want to have a plan and practice."

You can also use apps, such as PhotoPills , to plan locations and time photos.

Look around for photo opportunities beyond the eclipse itself

There will be many people taking pictures of the eclipse itself so it might be wise to turn your lens away from where everyone else is pointing theirs.

Take photos of people observing the eclipse and the scene of any eclipse gatherings. This will connect the human and astral experiences.

If you find yourself in a spot where there are few people present, try putting the eclipse in context using the surrounding structures or nature as a frame.

Don't try to capture an eclipse selfie

With a proper solar filter, you can capture the sun with the front camera lens during the solar eclipse, but it won't make the best selfie.

Stocks said the camera will have trouble focusing on both you and the sun. She recommends taking a photo focusing on each and blending the two together with editing software.
