A rubric is a scoring tool that explicitly describes the instructor’s performance expectations for an assignment or piece of work. A rubric identifies: criteria: the aspects of performance (e.g., argument, evidence, clarity) that will be assessed.

The ARCH Historical Thinking Skills Rubric is designed to be used holistically. Rubrics are either task-specific or general. According to Brookhart (2013), task-specific rubrics are used to assess a discrete task, whereas general rubrics assess multiple tasks around a general set of skills. There are several advantages to using general rubrics.

The rubrics articulate fun damental criteria for each learning outcome, with performance descriptors demonstrating progressively more sophisticated levels of attainment. The rubrics are intended for institutional -level use in evaluating and discussing student learning, not for grading.

Rubric for History Essays. A rubric is a set of clear standards that informs students of precise expectations for an assignment. The points below apply to longer written essays, to Thought Questions (classroom courses), and to online discussion postings.

The rubrics for the AP History Document-Based Question (DBQ) and Long Essay Question (LEQ) have been modified for the 2017–18 school year, using feedback received from AP teachers and Readers and in tandem with recently announced changes to the Course and Exam Description for each course.
