The fascinating stories behind 13 of Bedford's most historic buildings
One building had to be demolished before construction had even finished
- 05:00, 19 JUN 2022
Although we're often looking to the future, how often do you take time to look around your hometown to reflect on its past? Historic buildings have a number of stories to tell - but you might not know them.
If you live or work in Bedford it's easy to take the town's historical importance for granted, but take a look around and you'll be amazed by the number of buildings with amazing histories. How about the church founded by one of England's most famous authors, the resting place of a king, or the venue that became the home of the BBC Symphony Orchestra during World War Two?
Then there's the building that had to be knocked down before it was even built, or the largest Sikh temple in the United Kingdom outside of London. Here are the stories of Bedford's most historic and elegant buildings.

Bedford Prison
Construction of Bedford Prison began in 1797 when Bedford builder John Wing was given approval to build a new gaol. It was built to replace a crumbling prison that sat on the junction of High Street and Silver Street.
John Wing wrote that the prison had "cells for debtors, felons and house of correction prisoners", "two cells for the condemned" and "an oven to purify infected clothing". Construction of the prison finished in 1801 but it has been expanded twice, once in 1949 and once in 1990, after the prison gained a reputation as one of the most overcrowded prisons in England.
Bunyan Meeting House
Born in 1628 in Elstow, near Bedford, John Bunyan rose from a humble background to become one of England’s most popular authors, and an influential thinker and philosopher in the 17th century.
He was jailed for refusing to stop preaching when King Charles II limited free speech. In prison, he wrote Grace Abounding , an autobiography, and began work on his most famous book, The Pilgrim’s Progress . It is said to be one of the first novels written in English.
After being released from prison John Bunyan needed to find a permanent meeting place as Pastor or the Independent Congregation. In 1672 his friend, Josiah Ruffhead, paid £50 for a barn and an orchard on Bedford's Mill Street, which would then be converted into the Meeting House. The building still stands today and its bronze doors depict scenes from The Pilgrim's Progress.
Bedford Infirmary/County Hospital
When brewer and MP Samuel Whitbread died in 1796 he left a large sum of money in his will to build an infirmary for Bedford's sick. His son, who had the same name, fulfilled his father's wish and built Bedford Infirmary in 1803.
Like Bedford Prison, it was designed by John Wing with Totternhoe stone and brick. The infirmary grew over the years, and during the 1844 typhus epidemic a fever hospital was erected on the site to cope with the number of local people infected.
In 1899 a new County Hospital was built on the site of the infirmary with the creation of a children's ward. During the First and Second World Wars the County Hospital was used to treat casualties of conflict.
In 1950 it was renamed South Wing and merged with St Peter's Hospital (North Wing) to create Bedford General Hospital. In 1996 the Queen opened the Cygnet Wing to provide paediatric and maternity care, as well as gynaecology.
The Swan Hotel
The Swan was built by the Duke of Bedford in 1796. Henry Holland, a famous London architect who was responsible for the renovations at Woburn Abbey, designed it. It replaced The Swan Inn, an earlier building which stood slightly closer to the High Street.
A memorial outside commemorates the men of Bedfordshire who died in the Boer War. The Swan Hotel is where the rich and famous usually stay when they visit Bedford.
St Paul's Church
The church sitting in the centre of Bedford is important in terms of its history and location. Some evidence exists that St Paul's was founded by King Offa, who died in AD 796.
It is also believed that Offa was buried at the church. The present day building was erected in the 13th century.
The church acted as home for the BBC's daily worship programme, which was broadcast throughout Europe during the Second World War. Inscribed on the entrance to the chapel are the words: "The BBC broadcast the Christian message from this chapel 1941-1945 in the darkness of war. Nation shall speak peace unto union.
"They shall beat their swords into ploughshares. Hope through reconciliation. Forgiveness through understanding. Peace."
Borough Hall
While Borough Hall doesn't have a particularly long history, it is riddled with controversy. Designed by Bedfordshire architect John Barker in 1965, halfway through its building it was demolished due to the discovery of design faults.
When it was eventually unveiled the building was praised by representatives of private industry and the building world as the way forward for council buildings. However, many locals objected to the stark appearance of the 100 foot concrete block dominating the skyline. In 1990 a repair bill of £2.4 million accrued when it was revealed that steel cables within the building had eroded.
Bedford Corn Exchange
The Corn Exchange as we know it today was built in 1874 at the cost of £9,000. During World War Two the Corn Exchange housed the BBC Symphony Orchestra when it became too dangerous for it to be based in London and public concerts were reorded, which were broadcast to the nation.
The venue played host to many star names during the war, including a fateful visit from Glenn Miller , as well as Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich and Vera Lynn. A bust of Glenn Miller has been placed on the front of the building.
St Cuthbert’s Church
St Cuthbert's Church on Mill Street stands on an ancient site that has housed three other churches over the centuries. It was first founded by King Offa in 772 in honour of St Cuthbert of Durham, a popular saint of the time.
This was burnt down in 1010 and was replaced by a second church, which was then destroyed in 1224. After it was destroyed its stones were used to fortify Bedford Castle, which was facing a siege.
After the siege the church was rebuilt using the stones from the castle, meaning St Cuthbert's and Bedford Castle had swapped stones. The church as we know it today was built in 1845. The Church of England sold it to the Harpur Trust in 1974, who gave it to Bedford's Polish community. The church is now known as The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Cuthbert.
Guru N anak Gurdwara Sikh Temple
The Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Ford End Road was designed as a focal point for Bedford's Sikh population. The project started in 1999 and took five years to plan and three years to build. It was completed in April 2007 and became the largest Sikh temple in the United Kingdom outside of London.
Old Town Hall
The Old Town Hall in St Paul's Square was once the site of a grammar school built in 1566. However, in 1892 the school moved to the current site of Bedford School on De Parys Avenue.
The building in St Paul's Square then became the Town Hall, before later being used as the town's Tourist Information Centre until 2015.The Old Town Hall is now used as a venue for civil marriages and civil partnerships.
Jamia Masjid Gulshani Mosque
The Jamia Masjid Gulshani Mosque on Westbourne Road is a testament to Bedford's community spirit. The mosque was 20 years in the making when it was finally completed in 2001.
According to reports, the Muslim community had previously had to worship in two improvised temples in upstairs rooms of houses. All £400,000 needed to build it was raised by the local Muslim community.
St Francesca Cabrini RC Church
Bedford has a higher proportion of Italian residents than anywhere else in the country. A total of 7,500 men from southern Italy travelled to Bedford for work between 1951 and the early 1960s, a result of chronic unemployment in the south of Italy.
A church was built on Woburn Road in 1965 and was dedicated to Saint Francesca Cabrini, a saint who worked tirelessly for immigrants. There are many shrines to Saint Francesca in the US, including in Chicago and New York. Alongside donations from Bedford's Italian community, donations from these shrines were used to build the church. The church has become a focal point for Bedford's Italian community.
Elstow Moot Hall
On the outskirts of Bedford in the village of Elstow sits the Moot Hall. Moot means to argue, so the name is a reference to the building's use, which was to hear marketplace disputes.
The nuns of Elstow Abbey, who used it for storage, constructed the building in around 1500. The building was immortalised in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress as "Vanity Fair". Today the building is used as a museum dedicated to 17th century life.

The Chancellor's House Bed and Breakfast
A lovely Italianate Victorian B&B built in 1875 in the historic district of Bedford, PA
We have lovingly restored this grand old house into a Bed and Breakfast, saving the traditional architectural features and adding all new modern conveniences. Heavy moldings, high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, wide center halls, carved staircases, and wide verandas are blended harmoniously with central air conditioning, recessed lighting, refinished hardwood floors, new private baths, state-of-the-art kitchen, ceiling fans, cable TV and high-speed wireless internet. Pause before you enter, to view our wide wrap-around front porch, complete with several rocking chairs just waiting for you to settle into with a good book. Our seasonal potted plants will enjoy your company too. Refreshments are served during warm months on request. During your visit, pause to enjoy the many original works of art on display throughout our home.
The parlor is the first room to greet you. It is furnished with family heirlooms and is primarily dedicated to you our guests for activities or guests of your own you may want to entertain.
THE LIBRARY
This is the most impressive room in the house. It was elegantly paneled in warm cherrywood by the former Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. John Bowman during his residence in the 1950s. Dr. Bowman also designed and built the tiled fireplace that features many famous Mercer Tiles. Dr. Bowman's creativity lives on in this richly appointed room.
THE DINING ROOM
Enjoy a healthy, hot breakfast in our light-filled dining room. You will be served on beautiful china, silver, and crystal. Taste, nutrition, and presentation are emphasized for this morning meal. Coffee and juice accompany fresh fruit, baked goods and a selection of time-tested entrees. Special dietary needs will be accommodated when notified in advance.
