Yoga Studies

Welcome to Yoga Studies at LMU where students focus on the academic study and practice of yoga in our Master of Arts and  Continuing Education programs.

Program Overview

Yoga Studies class on the bluff

The Yoga Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University provides a deep study of the Yoga tradition from multiple perspectives through continuing education classes and certificates and a Master of Arts degree, offered both in residential and low-residency formats. These programs help students explore Yoga's rich history, its relationship to religion and spirituality, and Yogic philosophy. Students study primary classical texts, learn the Sanskrit language, explore the health benefits of physical practice, and look at the placement of modern Yoga in today's world.

Continuing Education certificates  are offered year-round in Yoga Philosophy, YogaEd, and Yoga Teacher Training and are open to all. Please follow the links below. Graduate students seeking the M.A. in Yoga Studies must apply for admission. They may choose to pursue a Yoga Therapy concentration or a Post-Graduate Yoga Therapy Certification. A new cohort begins each fall semester.

M.A. in Yoga Studies

Students Doing Yoga

Loyola Marymount University offers the first Master of Arts in Yoga Studies in America. Yoga is regularly practiced by an estimated 36.7 million Americans, but often physical practices are emphasized. The M.A. in Yoga Studies works to explore a full picture of the tradition from practice to text to theory. Graduate students engage in deep study of Yoga philosophy and history, Sanskrit, elements of physical practice, comparative spirituality, and study in India.

The program produces knowledgeable leaders in the field of Yoga. Post-graduation, our students have gone on to further study in related Ph.D. programs, begun teaching Yoga in undergraduate institutions, opened centers and studios, found leadership work in Yoga media companies, and worked to train other teachers in Yoga.

Assistant for Special Events, Media and Research Support, MA in Yoga Studies

This assistant will help with the planning and promotion of special events, including monthly Wednesday night on-campus lectures and various cohort activities including retreats, field trips, the annual Doshi Bridgebuilder Award and the annual Yoga Day event which draws roughly 500 visitors to campus. This role also includes promotion: the making and distribution of print and digital flyers, maintaining and collaborating on social media accounts and assisting with ad placement and overall program promotion.

This assistant may also occasionally be asked to provide research support to the two full-time and two part-time professors teaching in the program.

This role calls for a high level of engagement with both the digital and physical worlds through material creation and sharing/promotion, a willingness and ability to work occasional nights and weekends when events occur, and strong organizational skills to assist in the planning and implementation of event steps. You will work closely with Program Administrator Amy Osborne and Administrative Coordinator David Rogoff.

Research Assistant to Dr. Chris Chapple

This position entails research support for Program Director Dr. Chapple including, but not limited to, obtaining and summarizing materials, editing works in progress, indexing for book projects, and other tasks as needed. Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail are required.

What is the mode of attendance for the M.A. in Yoga Studies program?

LMU currently offers both an in-person (residency) and remote (low-residency, online) degree program. The Residency is completed in two years with the option of adding post graduate Yoga Therapy study, information on which can be found . The Hybrid Low Residency program includes several weeks of in-person study in LA and India, though most of the program is completed online part-time over a three-year period.

What are the prerequisites for Admissions to the the M.A. in Yoga Studies program?

A Bachelor's degree with a minimum of a 3.0 is required for consideration. No GRE is required.

What are the co-requisites to the M.A. in Yoga Studies program?

In addition to courses, students will be required to complete one of the LMU Yoga Studies Extension Certificates hosted by Continuing Education certificates during or before their time at LMU. Information on these courses can be found here.

It should be noted that Sanskrit I and Sanskrit II are also hosted by Continuing Education certificates and are required courses for completion of the M.A. in Yoga Studies in addition to one other LMU Yoga Studies Extension Certificate.

What other events will I attend?

Throughout the academic school year, Graduate Yoga Studies Staff and Graduate Assistants work hard to organize Yoga related events that are free and open to the public. These events include LMU Yoga Day  (Fall semester), Wednesday Evening Lecture Series  (2-3 per semester), Benedict Canyon Group Retreats (2-3 per semester, cohort only), and the Himalayan Scholar Intensive course (Fall semester). All Graduate Yoga Studies students are strongly encouraged to attend these events to supplement and enrich the academic experience. More information on past and future events can be found here.

Who are the M.A. in Yoga Studies faculty?

Information on current Graduate Yoga Studies faculty can be found here .

Who will be my classmates?

The M.A. in Yoga Studies program is a cohort education system. This means that your classmates will be the same for each class and from semester to semester. Your fellow classmates will be from all around the world, from all walks of life, and have backgrounds and expertise in many different areas!

The promotion of a true learning community is likelier in cohort education, where students get to learn cumulatively about each other’s aspirations and professional backgrounds, and to bring professional experiences to the study of the subject matter. In addition, cohort education establishes strong potential for networks that can endure beyond graduation. In cohort education, there is a keener sense of the education of the whole person, such that each of the students has a chance to flourish in ways that might be less measurable or even noticeable in a more commuter-driven, fragmented environment.

Can I have a job while studying in the M.A. in Yoga Studies program?

Though having a full-time job while studying in the Residential M.A. in Yoga Studies program is possible, it is not recommended as this is a full-time program. Students interested in studying part-time may wish to enroll in the Low Residency  Online M.A. Program which includes a lighter (part-time) course load with one additional semester for completion.

We also understand the need for financial support while in school! Many of our Residential cohort members hold part time jobs on and off campus. In addition, we offer a few Graduate Assistantships each year, for which information can be found in the Graduate Assistantships Dropdown.

When is school in session?

The M.A. in Yoga Studies follow’s LMU’s academic calendar,  and includes the summer semester in between the first and second year of the program. Full curriculum for Residential students can be found here , and low-residential curriculum here . Classes for Residential Students currently take place on Mondays and Wednesdays in the afternoon-evening.

What financial aid is offered?

Scholarship, grant, and loan information can be found Grad YGST Scholarship Dropdown.

What information should International Students be aware of prior to applying?

International applicants who have completed their postsecondary education from an institution outside the United States (U.S.) must hold a degree from a university recognized by the Ministry of Education as a degree granting institution. Transcripts from an international institution must be translated and evaluated by a U.S. transcript evaluation service (e.g.   Educational Credential Evaluators ,   International Education Research Foundation   or   World Education Services ) before the application is considered for admission. Feel free to visit LMU’s International Students Graduate Study webpage for more information,   here .

What are M.A. in Yoga Studies Alumni doing, and what are my career options after graduating?

Check out our Alumni Spotlight interviews to see what our Alumni are up to after graduating! Many of our graduates have gone on to get their PhDs, taught at the collegiate level, and used the knowledge gained in the M.A. in Yoga Studies to develop new and more well-rounded Yoga teacher training programs. Working in the field of Yoga Therapy is also an option for those who decided to complete the post-graduate certificate in Yoga Therapy. Much like there are many kinds of yoga practices, there are many directions the program has  taken our students and oftentimes our students curate their own path.

How do I apply?

Fall registration details and upcoming deadlines are available on our website. You may also e-mail   [email protected]   to be added to our M.A in Yoga Studies interest list and the Graduate Yoga Studies newsletter to ensure you receive new information as soon as it becomes available. (Feel free to   unsubscribe   if you no longer wish to receive.)

So You Want to ‘Major’ in Yoga? Here’s How

If you’ve been wanting to further your yogic studies beyond Om-schooling, you’re in luck, because schools around the country are starting to offer academic programs and curriculums designed for those who would like to take their education beyond the mat.

“We’ve trained teachers, nurses, parent educators, mindfulness teachers, and others,” says Melissa Jean, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Mindfulness Studies at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Want to learn Sanskrit, dive deep into yogic history and philosophy, or study abroad in India? Learn to teach mindfulness, become a yoga therapist, or design corporate wellness programs? Here are four programs that will inspire you to go back to school.

Loyola Marymount University: Master of Arts in Yogic Studies

This program, located in Los Angeles, California, offers a Master of Arts in Yogic Studies—the first graduate degree of its kind. It features two tracks: a two-year residential model, and a low-residency hybrid, where students complete approximately 15 percent of their studies on campus and the rest online. The low-residency program is pending approval for Fall 2018, and takes place over the course of two and a half years. Both programs feature a study abroad segment in India. The school also offers a Certificate in Yogic Studies, for those who do not wish to pursue a Master of Arts degree.

Who it’s for: Those who want a fully-tailored curriculum to delve into yogic philosophy and practice. Classes include Health Science and Yoga, Comparative Mysticism, and Sanskrit Language.

Lesley University: Master of Arts in Mindfulness Studies

This low-residency graduate program takes place over the course of two years, and goes beyond what’s typically offered in a yoga class. “Students are supported as they develop their personal mindfulness practice, and develop their thinking on how mindfulness can be applied to their own fields of interest and endeavors,” Dr. Jean says. Students can explore topics like Buddhist tradition, contemplative neuroscience, and partake in a mindfulness internship and on-campus summer residency. While yoga is not part of the degree curriculum, the program does feature Qi Gong, and yoga is offered on campus.

Who it’s for : Those interested in the more general aspect of a mindful practice, and/or those interested in bringing mindfulness into any career.

Naropa University: Bachelor of Arts in Yogic Studies

This Boulder, Colorado, school offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Yoga Studies, along with a teacher training students can obtain on campus. Classes include Psychology of the Chakras and Experiential Anatomy, along with more classic yoga classes like Yoga 1: Foundations, and Yoga 3: Integral Practice.

Students can also minor in Yoga Studies. The degree also features a teacher training certificate along with a senior retreat. Students pursuing other topics of interest at the university can also partake in the school’s yoga teacher training program.

Who it’s for: Undergrad students seeking a solid core foundation and deep knowledge of yogic practices.

Maryland University of Integrative Health: Master of Science in Yoga Therapy

This graduate program offers a foundational experience in yoga therapy, as well as a deep dive into understanding the body’s systems from a holistic, integrative perspective. Classes take place over the course of nine weekends on campus in Laurel, Maryland, and include subjects like Mind/Body Science and Professional Practices for Yoga Therapy Practitioners.

Who it’s for: Working professionals seeking a straightforward degree program to practice yoga therapy.

If you don’t wish to pursue a full-blown academic degree in yoga, several technical and community colleges now offer teacher training programs on campus. The University of New Mexico, Taos, for example, offers a RYT-200 teacher training, allowing students to study to teach yoga while paying reduced in-state tuition. Time to hit the mat … and the books!

Yoga and Psychology

Concentration.

Concentration Description

The Yoga and Psychology concentration is intended for master's and doctoral students in the Psychology Program who wish to have more expertise on the relationship between Yoga and Psychology in the context of their professional goals. The concentration emphasizes coursework aligned with professional practice in contexts such as yoga therapy, yoga teaching, psychotherapy practice, somatic education, and somatic research.

With the globalization of Yoga practice throughout the world, Yoga teacher training programs are far more accessible. More recently, the profession of Yoga Therapy has emerged, groundbreaking in successfully legitimizing Yoga as a methodology for working with physical illness and chronic health conditions.

Those who practice Yoga, whether longtime practitioners or those new to it, know of its powerful effects on the mind and well-being. Yoga’s earliest roots as spiritual teachings even prior to it becoming associated with physical “exercise” focused on ideas that could largely be viewed today as psychological in their examination of causes of human suffering and principles of well-being, and what it is that constitutes a meaningful life. As such, Yoga’s alignment with modern psychology is readily evident. Its place as an enhancing or even central methodology in psychotherapy represents an exciting development in the profession.

Practices, methods, ideas, and topics engaged within this concentration’s courses include historical foundations of the application of Yoga to psychology; yogic principles and practices in psychotherapeutic practice; issues related to spiritual practice and psychology; conducting qualitative research on Yoga and psychology; legal, ethical, and scope of practice issues entailed in yogic-centered psychotherapy; and the neuroscientific foundations of Yoga practice.

NEW IN FALL 2023: MUIH will begin delivering  this program in the fully online format for students starting the program in Fall 2023 and later trimesters.

As a yoga therapy practitioner positioned at the forefront of this emerging field, you will be able to design a fulfilling career and develop one-on-one therapeutic relationships in a wide variety of health, wellness, and conventional medical settings. MUIH’s Master of Science Yoga Therapy program is the first and only accredited Master of Science degree in yoga therapy in the world. It offers a unique approach to this field by providing you with a comprehensive and highly experiential learning experience taught by globally renowned experts, culminating with a mentored clinical experience that prepares you to build or grow your practice. This 39.5-credit program is delivered in the online format and can be completed in 6 trimesters (2 years).

Your journey starts here. Programs now enrolling for Fall 2024.

The Master of Science in Yoga Therapy is designed for yoga teachers who want to progress in their career into the role of Yoga Therapist, so they can develop individualized yoga therapy plans of care for clients in one-one and small group settings. Students learn how to bridge the gap between ancient yoga wisdom and rigorous research practices, so they can partner with allied health professionals in supporting clients throughout their healthcare journey. In this two-year program, students develop their applied knowledge of the experiential sciences of yoga and yoga therapy and are mentored in their application of this knowledge in telehealth settings. The program is comprehensive in its approach, with an over-arching aim to equip tomorrow’s yoga therapists with the ability to promote client biopsychosocial health and well-being through the applied practice of yoga therapy. Students who complete the program become eligible to sit for the national yoga therapy exam offered by the International Association of Yoga Therapists, to earn their C-IAYT designation.

Are you already a licensed healthcare professional? Explore MUIH’s Post-Master’s Certificate in Therapeutic Yoga Practices , designed specifically for licensed healthcare professionals.

As the first and only Master of Science program in yoga therapy, MUIH’s M.S. Yoga Therapy program prepares yoga therapists to thrive in a complex world. Students develop their applied yoga therapy skills through didactic (classroom) learning, clinic theatre training, peer-peer experiential learning, yoga therapy mentorship, and supervised yoga therapy practice. Students begin their studies with a full year of didactic study in the experiential science of yoga therapy, and then take a comprehensive exam to demonstrate their readiness to progress into work with clients in one-one and small group settings. In the second year of study, students are mentored by clinic faculty in the practice of yoga therapy in telehealth settings. Along the way, students are equipped with a comprehensive foundation in the theoretical, scientific, and experiential training of yoga therapy in one-one and small group settings.

The curriculum is anchored in client-centered, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care, honoring all classical yoga traditions without attachment to a particular yoga lineage.  Students learn how to apply their whole Self in the witnessing and assessment of each client’s mind-body-heart-spirit system and story, and how to apply this wisdom and knowledge using scientific inquiry to design, delivery and evaluate comprehensive yoga therapy plans of care. Students learn how to tailor the philosophy, practices and postures of yoga to address individual health concerns; and to promote the benefits of yoga therapeutic practices and yoga therapy to multiple audiences (including future clients).

The program provides a comprehensive understanding of the classical and theoretical foundations of the field of yoga therapy, as well as extensive knowledge of biomedical systems from an integrative and holistic perspective. Students study both yogic and behavior change theoretical frameworks and conceptual models, so they can develop their critical approach to integrating classical yogic wisdom into evidence-informed plans of care. The program also provides a strong foundation in the pathology of health and disease relevant to the practice of yoga therapy, and trains students how to design, deliver and evaluate yoga therapy plans of care for clients based on their health and well-being goals.

MUIH yoga therapists learn best practices for working with clients remotely in the growing telehealth environment: how to hold space for clients as they share their lived experience; how to establish a client-practitioner relationship virtually; how to operate within HIPAA guidelines in the online environment; how to use electronic health records; and how to operate their private yoga therapy practice using telehealth delivery platforms. The telehealth clinic experience provides students with the opportunity to become comfortable with telehealth technology and practice skills that will support them in joining the integrative health workforce after graduation. Students are also taught how to establish and promote their yoga therapy private practice after graduation, using best practices in social-preneurship and online health promotion.

As part of MUIH’s commitment to advancing health equity, the program encourages yoga therapy students to engage with clients in remote, underserved, underrepresented, and socially disadvantaged settings. In this way, students build their cultural competency skills will making yoga therapy accessible to a wider, and less homogenous, audience. Students also learn how to engage effectively with wellness and healthcare providers, by developing their inter-professionality skills and their use of biomedical communication so they can collaborate with care teams and support clients in both community wellness and healthcare settings.

Building on the success of ten years of providing yoga therapy training, MUIH’s cohort-based program builds a strong community that continues long after graduation. MUIH graduates benefit from a strong alumni network, both inside of the yoga therapy program and across other MUIH integrative health programs, as well as continued career services support.

Yoga was the most commonly used complementary health approach among U.S. adults in 2012 (9.5%, 22.4 million individuals) and 2017 (14.3%, 35.2 million individuals) and demonstrated an increase in usage during that five-year period. The use of meditation increased more than threefold from 4.1% in 2012 to 14.2% in 2017. Similar increased usage of these modalities was observed in children aged 4-17 years. The percent of children who used yoga increased significantly from 3.1% in 2012 to 8.4% (4.9 million children) in 2017. The use of meditation among children also increased significantly from 0.6% in 2012 to 5.4% in 2017.

The earlier 2016 Yoga in America Study conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance also indicated significant and widespread use of yoga. 28% of all Americans had participated in a yoga class at some point in their lives. The number of Americans practicing yoga increased to over 36 million in 2016, up from 20.4 million in the 2012 study. There were more older practitioners than ever before; nearly 14 million practitioners were over the age of 50, up from about 4 million in 2012. One in three Americans had tried yoga on their own (not in a class) at least once. 34% of Americans said they were somewhat or very likely to practice yoga in the next 12 months, equal to more than 80 million Americans. Since 2012, the percentage of Americans aware of yoga grew from 75% to 90%.

Healthcare bodies such as medicine’s leading accreditor, The Joint Commission, the federal government’s lnter-Agency Task Force on Pain Management, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American College of Physicians, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend and, in some cases, require nonpharmacologic treatment as part of patient treatment planning. Yoga is among the key modalities cited for such non-pharmacologic approaches.

The job market for yoga professionals is robust. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects jobs for yoga professionals (included in BLS’s fitness trainers and instructors category) to grow 19% from 2021-2031, much faster than average. There are currently 90,000 registered yoga teachers in the U.S. who possess the base level of non-academic training. MUIH’s Master of Science in Yoga Therapy provides such individuals with the opportunity to differentiate and distinguish themselves from others and to their clients and potential employers.

The scope of JoYS is limited only by the expertise of its editors and peer-reviewers. Guest editors may be invited to oversee the production of a JoYS article set themed towards a specific topic or subject of interest.

Objectives: Accumulated evidence garnered in the last few decades has highlighted the role of yoga in health and disease. The overwhelming mortality and morbidity mediated by noncommunicable epidemics such as heart disease and cancer have fostered a search for mechanisms to attenuate them. Despite overwhelming success in acute care, the efficacy of modern medicines has been limited on this front. Yoga is one of the integrative therapies that has come to light as having a substantial role in preventing and mitigating such disorders. It thus seems trite to analyze and discuss the research advancements in yoga for 2020. The present review attempts to distill recent research highlights from voluminous literature generated in 2020. Methods: This review was conducted on the articles published or assigned to an issue in 2020. The authors searched the PubMed database for clinical studies published in the English language, using yoga (including meditation) as the intervention, and having an adequate description of the intervention. Then, they extracted data from each study into a standardized Google sheet. Results: A total of 1149 citations were retrieved in the initial search. Of these, 46 studies met eligibility criteria and were finally included. The studies were predominantly on mental health and neuropsychology, addressing various issues such as anxiety, postural balance, migraine, academic performance, and childhood neglect. Anxiety, stress, and depression were other common denominators. Eight studies were on cardiorespiratory systems, including exercise capacity, cardiac rehabilitation, myocardial infarction, and hypertension. Three studies were on diabetes, evaluating the effect of yoga. Five studies focused on cognition, health status, and autonomic regulation and few others included cancers, infertility, ulcerative colitis, urinary incontinence, restless leg syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, and metabolic syndrome. Finally, most studies were on noncommunicable diseases with one exception, human immunodeficiency virus; two randomized controlled trials were dedicated to it. Conclusions: Yoga has been studied under a wide variety of clinicopathological conditions in the year 2020. This landscape review intends to provide an idea of the role of yoga in various clinical conditions and its future therapeutic implications.

Keywords: clinical research; meditation; trials; yoga.

Mindfulness

Does yoga help reduce schizophrenia symptoms, how yoga could foster better quality of life for schizophrenia patients..

  • Many studies have focused on the impacts of yoga on depression, but few have studied schizophrenia.
  • One of the first studies investigated a modified practice of yoga on patients with schizophrenia disorders.
  • Yoga was found to provide significant benefits to patient well-being.
  • Benefits included increased self-compassion, interoceptive awareness, better social functioning, and more.

Mind-body therapies have been increasingly popular in recent decades. The idea behind meditation , yoga, tai chi, and mindfulness is that it helps center people with overpowering emotions and gets them to focus on the present. Mind-body treatments have been found to help with depression and anxiety , but what is known about their effect on schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia, by nature, is characterized by cognitive, sensory, and emotional disorder, so it would make sense to suspect that mind-body therapies might help with some of the cognitive and emotional symptoms. Patients who are hospitalized tend to have increased negative symptoms that render the patient more dysfunctional than those who can live with their disorder outside of an inpatient clinic.

Studies have focused on yoga and its effects on outpatient populations, but what about for those who need more help with more serious debilitating conditions?

How Was the Yoga Practice Conducted?

A study investigated the effects of a four-week intervention of yoga practice in an inpatient hospital setting on patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Nineteen patients participated in the intervention in addition to normal treatment, such as medication and therapy , while 14 patients continued with normal treatment alone.

The yoga practice was conducted as a 50-minute class that was modified to fit the individualized requirements specifically for schizophrenia spectrum disorder patients. Out of an instruction manual, the practice was carefully selected and developed by psychiatrists, psychologists, yoga teachers, and the patients themselves. The goal was to choose poses and a practice that would be accessible to all of the patients regardless of their physical activity levels.

Mats were arranged in a circle to foster social connection, and props such as blankets and blocks were used to enhance the comfort and ease of the patients in their practice. The practice even included modifications for those who wanted or needed to sit in a chair and for those who had physical limitations. Prolonged periods of silence were minimized and instructions were conducted using simple language.

Afterward, patients could express how they felt and what they wanted to do in the next session.

How Was Well-Being Measured?

Researchers measured baseline and post-intervention symptoms with qualitative interviews as well as self-report measures such as the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PNSS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), and Personal Social Performance Scale (PSP). These scales measure positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions as well as blunted affect and depression. Social functioning was measured by social activity in work and study, personal and interpersonal relationships, self-care, and disturbing and aggressive behavior.

The study found that at baseline, patients had the desire to improve their stress levels and reduce symptoms. What is interesting to note is that a small number of participants expressed hesitation to pursue the yoga treatment, fearing that it would worsen symptoms. Some patients indicated that they had difficulty accessing their internal sense of emotional awareness, and some expressed skepticism that yoga would suddenly make them better.

However, the results proved their worries wrong. The yoga intervention was found to significantly increase their ability to relax, increase bodily awareness, feel socially connected, and experience an increased sense of spirituality .

Patients expressed an increased ability to self-regulate their emotions, including anxiety, sleep disorders, distraction, and relieving pain. Patients also returned to yoga poses as coping mechanisms when symptoms came up.

The yoga intervention also increased self-compassion. Many of those who experience schizophrenia disorders often have shame , guilt , lack of self-confidence , fear , and motivation difficulty.

Yoga allowed the patients to focus on their personal needs emotionally as well as physically, which allowed them to focus on their own well-being, which affected the rest of their daily functioning.

In sum, yoga interventions show promise in helping patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
