Tell Me About Wits University PhD Scholarship: Future Ecosystems for Africa:

Associate Professor Laura Pereira, Global Change Institute, Wits University is advertising for a PhD candidate to undertake research under the Oppenheimer Generations Future Ecosystems for Africa program (FEFA). FEFA aims to drive policy strategies to enhance the resilience of African ecosystems, and the wellbeing of its people through thought-leadership and evidence-based research on the continent. The PhD candidate will be expected to develop a project in line with Work Package 1: Futures thinking for identifying vulnerabilities/tipping points and leveraging opportunities for African informed transformative change.

This work package aims to draw on futures thinking methodologies that allow stakeholders to imagine more desirable futures for Africa away from business-as-usual. It aims to construct a theoretical and overarching framework for prioritising ecosystem-based interventions in Africa, including what to protect and how, what to rehabilitate, and whose voices need to be included in decision-making. This approach will build on findings from the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) regional assessment for Africa that emphasized that Africa’s rich bio-cultural heritage and diverse value perspectives for nature needed to be brought more strongly to the fore in science and decision-making, as well as the Nature Futures framework developed by the IPBES Task Force on scenarios and models. As such, it will take a multiple evidence base approach that appreciates diverse knowledge systems and will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders. A core aspect will be to provide African specific examples to complement ongoing research initiatives, explicitly emphasizing decolonial approaches to futures thinking, as well as engaging with alternative paradigms, such as the post-growth discourse.

As such, it will offer a strong empirical and theoretical foundation for research on African futures and on sustainability and regenerative transformations in the African context. How to Get the English Language Proficiency Certificate for Scholarship Applications (2024) English Language Proficiency Certificate for Scholarship Application If you are an international student who needs a scholarship to study abroad at a prestigious university, there are universities that require an English Proficiency Certificate when applying for a scholarship. However, the majority of pupils do not possess a TOEFL or IELTS certificate. The good news is here. Some institutions do not require certifications from the TOEFL or IELTS, therefore you just need to only apply with a certificate of English proficiency from your previous university. In this post, I will provide a quick explanation of the English Proficiency Certificate, information on how to get one, and a list of colleges that accept it. What is the English Proficiency Certificate? An English Proficiency Certificate is an official university document that shows that all your subjects were taught in English at your previous university. It also indicates that you speak English well and fluently. With the help of this document, you can be eligible for a scholarship even if you haven't taken the TOEFL or IELTS English proficiency exams. Certificates of English proficiency are frequently used in academic and professional settings as proof of a person's language abilities. These could be necessary when you are applying for a job, admittance to a university, or any other educational program. Related Articles How Do You Get Your Certificate of English Proficiency? If you want to get your English Proficiency Certificate, you have to go to the university where your last degree was earned. Look for the focal person in your department, who could be the department director, lecturer, or professor. They provide ready-made templates. Generally speaking, the certificate is free; however, the university may charge a fee. All you have to do to get your English Proficiency Certificate is get in touch with your lecturers or the administration. Does the English Proficiency Certificate replace IELTS? The majority of the time, scholarship organizations simply need an English Proficiency Certificate to verify your language proficiency. Then, there would be no need for you to waste time getting ready for the TOEFL or IELTS. You may include their certificate of proficient English from the university with their scholarship application. A degree from your university might not, however, always be able to take the place of an IELTS score. Therefore, you should be sure that the program or institution you are applying to will accept an English proficiency certificate issued by the university in place of an IELTS score by consulting its specific requirements. Countries that Accept English Language Proficiency Certificates With Scholarship Applications: In most countries, the English Language Proficiency Certificate serves as an alternative to the IELTS exam. Proof of English language competency is accepted as part of the application procedure in many nations and scholarship programs. Among the instances are: Germany Malaysia South Korea Thailand Italy Japan (MEXT Scholarship) Europe (Erasmus Scholarship) Australia (some universities) Canada (some universities) You should remember that the country and the particular scholarship program may have different standards for English proficiency. It is always a good idea that you find out whether proof of English proficiency is needed by looking over the eligibility requirements of the program you are applying to.

The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) has partnered with the DAAD German Government scholarship program to provide scholarships for 4 masters and 5 phd candidates to study the Migration and Displacement program at ACMS in the University of the Witwatersrand School of Social Science.

The MA in Migration and Displacement encompasses public health, political science, sociology, urban planning, development studies and other disciplines. With migration being an important and hotly debated topic worldwide, the study of migration has wide-ranging academic and practical applications. Successful doctoral applicants must have a strong undergraduate degree and Masters qualification; a substantive background in a migration-related field; and a demonstrated ability to conduct methodologically sound, independent research (academic or otherwise). Strong students who do not meet all of these qualifications may be admitted on the condition that they register for a research methods course and/or the core courses of the Master programme, or complete a Masters degree through the programme. Full-time students have two years -and part-time students four years - to complete the degree.

Top scholars honoured at Wits

19 April 2024 - Wits University

Vice Chancellor shines a spotlight on first-year scholarship recipients, celebrating academic excellence and the transformative impact of education.

VC Schorlaship awards

Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University, played host to the recipients of the 2024 Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Award.

This annual event, held at the Wits Club on April 7, 2024, aims to celebrate and present certificates of merit to the new recipients, in the presence of their families, school principals, and donors.

The scholarship is a prestigious recognition granted to the top 20 deserving students who excelled in the national senior certificate exams and are currently enrolled in their first year at Wits University. This award is automatically extended to the highest achievers upon registration and covers their tuition for their entire degree. This comprehensive scholarship celebrates academic achievement, offering significant financial support to alleviate the costs of pursuing a University education for students and their families.

Vilakazi extended a welcome to all attendees, acknowledging the pivotal role played by educators and school principals in nurturing the talents of the scholarship recipients.

"The groundwork you have laid is solid and critical to the mission at hand," he said.

He thanked the donors who support the scholarship programme, before turning his attention to the parents of the scholarship recipients, recognising their support and sacrifices, which have culminated in the success of their children, "The sacrifices you have made, and support you have given, is now coming to fruition," he said.

However, the spotlight of the Vice-Chancellor’s address truly shone upon the scholarship recipients themselves, whom he hailed as the "young men and women of the moment”. He commended their academic achievements and celebrated their boundless potential, "I stand before you today with a heart full of pride and admiration for each and every one of you”.

Quoting the renowned Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Nkrumah, Vilakazi emphasised the transformative power of education in unlocking the doors to freedom and opportunity.

"Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom," he said.

Vilakazi invoked the legacy of Wits University as a beacon of innovation, knowledge, and intellectual curiosity. He challenged the scholarship recipients to embrace their role as torchbearers of academic excellence and agents of change in an ever-evolving world.

He highlighted the value of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity in driving scientific discovery and innovation, by quoting Albert Einstein. "The important thing is not to stop questioning".

Wits University offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to matriculants including the University Entrance Scholarship, the Vice-Chancellor’s Equality Scholarships, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Awards were created to motivate and reward top matriculants.
