  • Earn at least 15 credits from the following types of courses: MAP 7980 - Dissertation Research 15 Credit Hours (minimum) After passing the candidacy examination and meeting the other requirements that are required for admission to candidacy, the student can register for Doctoral Dissertation (MAP 7980). A minimum of 15 Doctoral Dissertation credit hours are required for the degree.

Examinations

Qualifying examination.

  • The qualifying/comprehensive examination is based on the core course work. To continue in the PhD program, students must pass the examination at the PhD level. Two attempts are permitted. The examination will be administered twice a year: one in the Fall semester and the other in the Spring semester. To take the examination, students must have earned a "B" or better in each core course, must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (out of 4.0) in the program, or must obtain permission from the graduate program director. Students will normally take the examination after the first year and are expected to have passed it by the end of the second year of study, unless a written request for a postponement has been approved by the Graduate Committee at least two months before the examination date. The student must pass the Qualifying Examination in at most two attempts. It is strongly recommended that the student select a dissertation adviser by the completion of 18 credit hours of course work, and it is strongly recommended that the student works with the dissertation adviser to form a dissertation committee within two semesters of passing the Qualifying Examination.

Candidacy Examination

  • The Candidacy Examination consists of a written examination based on the materials from two selected two-semester sequence courses taken by the students. A committee formed or selected by the Graduate Committee or the graduate program director is responsible for preparing and grading the written examinations. Each sequence that is selected for the candidacy examination must be approved by the dissertation adviser, the dissertation committee, and the graduate program director. Students in the Financial Mathematics Track will ordinarily select one of the sequences for their candidacy examination to be MAP 5641/MAP6642 Financial Mathematics I and II, and MAP5612/MAP6616 Computational Methods for Financial Mathematics I and II. The Candidacy Examination can be attempted after passing the qualifying examination. The Candidacy Examination must be completed within three years after passing the qualifying examination. A student must successfully pass the Candidacy Examination within at most two attempts.

Admission to Candidacy

  • The following are required to be admitted to candidacy and enroll in dissertation hours: Completion of all course work, except for dissertation hours. Successful completion of the candidacy examination. The dissertation advisory committee is formed, consisting of approved graduate faculty and graduate faculty scholars. Submittal of an approved program of study.

Dissertation Proposal Examination

  • After passing the candidacy examination, the student will prepare a dissertation proposal and orally present it to the dissertation advisory committee for approval. The proposal will include a description of the research performed to date and an agenda for the research planned to be completed for the dissertation. In addition to standards of correctness, indicating a suitable level of mastery of the material of the area of the dissertation, and suitability of the proposed dissertation topic, the presentation must meet current standards for professional presentations within the discipline of mathematics. For the successful completion of the Dissertation Proposal Examination, the presentation must be judged as passing the requirements for the examination by the majority of the dissertation committee. This exam must be passed within 18 months of passing the candidacy examination and not later than the end of the sixth year of graduate study. A candidate must pass this examination within at most two attempts.

Dissertation Defense

  • Upon completion of a student's research, the student's committee schedules an oral defense of the dissertation. Most students complete the program within five years after obtaining their bachelor's degree. Students are expected to complete the dissertation in no more than seven years from the date of admission to the program.

Independent Learning

  • The required 15 credit hours of dissertation will provide ample opportunities for students to gain the independent learning experience through studying published research papers and deriving, on their own, new and meaningful research results.

Most of the professors are very helpful, and passionate about their subjects. If your industry is not represented, you have the opportunity to create one. Related research

The Probability and Statistics group comprises 16 members of staff and has an international reputation for its research with 20% of its activity rated `world leading' in the RAE 2008 (the group's research activity in Probability was flagged as 5* in the RAE 2001).

Mathematical Finance is a very active branch of Probability Theory and Mathematics in general. It is probably one of the few areas in academic research which interact constantly with their field of application and with a huge impact on the daily functioning of the world's financial institutions.

There is a long tradition of Probability and Statistics at Manchester - the chair in Mathematical Statistics is one of the oldest established chairs in the UK. Previous members of staff include such well known names as Bartlett, Cane, Gani, Laycock, Papangelou, Parthasarathy, Priestley, Subba Rao and Whittle.

PhD and MPhil supervision is provided in all areas of research of the group. This includes three main areas of specialisation (listed alphabetically): (i) Financial Mathematics; (ii) Probability; (iii) Statistics. A partial list of current research topics can be found here .

Scholarships and bursaries

In the Department of Mathematics we offer a range of scholarships, studentships and awards to support UK and overseas postgraduate researchers.

Funding is also available at university and faculty level and can be viewed on our funding page . Alternatively, you can use our funding database to find scholarships, studentships and awards you may be eligible for.

We'd recommend you discuss potential sources of funding with your supervisor before applying. They can advise what funding may be available to you, and ensure you meet nomination and application deadlines.

Now that you’ve got some great opportunities at your fingertips, it’s time to start sending out applications. Remember, most scholarships receive a large number of applicants, so you’ll want to put some substantial work into your applications in order to win.

Before you begin your applications, it’s a good idea to sit down and do some self-reflection. Think about why mathematics is important to you and how you hope to make change in the world through math. You can reflect back on your past experiences to see how they informed your interest in math, and think of anything you’ve accomplished that speaks to your potential in the field. Try asking some friends, family members, and/or trusted adults for insights into this. Oftentimes, an outside perspective can shed entirely new light on your achievements!

Resources for scholarship applications

Once you’ve finished your reflection, it’s time to start writing. Mathematics majors may not take extensive writing-based coursework, but a well-written essay can help you stand out from the other applicants. To succeed in this field, check out our article on how to start a scholarship essay . We can also help you write about yourself and write a winning scholarship essay .

Resources for mathematics students

As a mathematics student, you are eligible to join a large variety of different nationwide organizations that can help you apply your studies to the real world, meet other professionals, and even find more scholarships and/or job opportunities. Here are a few organizations of note for math majors around the country.

Math Alliance

This is a program at Purdue University that allows students to sign up as either mentors or students of mathematics. Students from underrepresented backgrounds are eligible for free mathematics tutoring from highly qualified tutors, such as students in doctoral and masters programs. Tutors receive the benefit of gaining teaching experience, meeting other mathematics professionals, and helping make mathematics a more inclusive field.

While this specific program is only available at Purdue, there are many similar organizations at larger learning institutions, so check if yours has one today!

Mathematical Association of America

Membership to the MAA comes with the benefit of access to an extensive library of mathematics journals, materials, and databases. It also provides access to conferences, networking, and other peer-led programming to help plug students into the larger field of mathematics.

Association for Women in Mathematics

In a field that has historically been dominated by men, organizations such as the AWM offer an important resource for women who are looking to start a mathematics career. Membership provides access to an exclusive Job Board, journals, networking events, and more.

Frequently asked questions about math scholarships

Can mathematics majors apply for stem scholarships.

Yes! Mathematics is included in the STEM acronym as the last letter, so mathematics students are totally eligible for STEM scholarships. You’ll probably find that there are far more general “STEM” scholarships out there than there are math-specific ones. This is great for you as it means more opportunities for scholarship money.

You should also keep in mind that the more specific a scholarship is, the less people apply. So, if you do find math-specific scholarships, you’ll probably have less competition than you will in STEM scholarships.

Do I have to major in mathematics to apply for math scholarships?

Many mathematics scholarships do require a math major, but not all of them! If you have not decided on your major yet or are minoring in mathematics, check our list for any opportunities that would suit someone who is not fully committed to the field.

NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM)

View guidelines, important information for proposers.

All proposals must be submitted in accordance with the requirements specified in this funding opportunity and in the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) that is in effect for the relevant due date to which the proposal is being submitted. It is the responsibility of the proposer to ensure that the proposal meets these requirements. Submitting a proposal prior to a specified deadline does not negate this requirement.

Supports institutions of higher education to fund scholarships for academically talented low-income students and to study and implement a program of activities that support their recruitment, retention and graduation in STEM.

In 1998 Congress enacted the American Competitiveness in the Twenty-First Century Act which provided funds to the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create a mechanism whereby the hiring of foreign workers in technology-intensive sectors on H-1B visas would help address the long-term workforce needs of the United States. Initially, scholarships were only provided for students in mathematics, engineering, and computer science. Later legislation authorized NSF to expand the eligible disciplines at the discretion of the NSF director. Undergraduate and graduate degrees in most disciplinary fields in which NSF provides research funding (with some exclusions described elsewhere in this document) are eligible as long as there is a national or regional demand for professionals with those degrees to address the long-term workforce needs of the United States.

The main goal of the S-STEM program is to enable low-income students with academic ability, talent or potential to pursue successful careers in promising STEM fields. Ultimately, the S-STEM program seeks to increase the number of academically promising low-income students who graduate with a S-STEM eligible degree and contribute to the American innovation economy with their STEM knowledge. Recognizing that financial aid alone cannot increase retention and graduation in STEM, the program provides awards to institutions of higher education (IHEs) not only to fund scholarships, but also to adapt, implement, and study evidence-based curricular and co-curricular [1] activities that have been shown to be effective supporting recruitment, retention, transfer (if appropriate), student success, academic/career pathways, and graduation in STEM.

Social mobility for low-income students with academic potential is even more crucial than for students that enjoy other economic support structures. Hence, social mobility cannot be guaranteed unless the scholarship funds the pursuit of degrees in areas where rewarding jobs are available after graduation with an undergraduate or graduate degree.

The S-STEM program encourages collaborations, including but not limited to partnerships among different types of institutions; collaborations of S-STEM eligible faculty, researchers, and academic administrators focused on investigating the factors that affect low-income student success (e.g., institutional, educational, behavioral and social science researchers); and partnerships among institutions of higher education and business, industry, local community organizations, national labs, or other federal or state government organizations, as appropriate.

To be eligible, scholars must be domestic low-income students, with academic ability, talent or potential and with demonstrated unmet financial need who are enrolled in an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program in an S-STEM eligible discipline. Proposers must provide an analysis that articulates the characteristics and academic needs of the population of students they are trying to serve. NSF is particularly interested in supporting the attainment of degrees in fields identified as critical needs for the Nation. Many of these fields have high demand for training professionals that can operate at the convergence of disciplines and include but are not limited to quantum computing and quantum science, robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer science and computer engineering, data science and computational science applied to other frontier STEM areas, and other STEM or technology fields in urgent need of domestic professionals. It is up to the proposer to make a compelling case that a field is a critical need field in the United States.

S-STEM Eligible Degree Programs

Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Engineering, and Associate of Applied Science

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Applied Science

Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Engineering

Doctoral (Ph.D. or other comparable doctoral degree)

S-STEM Eligible Disciplines

Disciplinary fields in which research is funded by NSF, including technology fields associated with the S-STEM-eligible disciplines (e.g., biotechnology, chemical technology, engineering technology, information technology, etc.).

The following degrees and disciplines are excluded :

  • Clinical degree programs, including medical degrees, nursing, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, and others not funded by NSF, are ineligible degrees.
  • Business school programs that lead to Bachelor of Arts or Science in Business Administration degrees (BABA/BSBA/BBA) are not eligible for S-STEM funding.
  • Masters and Doctoral degrees in Business Administration are also excluded.

Proposers are strongly encouraged to contact Program Officers before submitting a proposal if they have questions concerning degree or disciplinary eligibility.

The S-STEM program particularly encourages proposals from 2-year institutions, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), predominately undergraduate institutions, and urban, suburban and rural public institutions.

Wegrzyn awarded SMART Scholarship

PhD student Emily Wegrzyn has been selected for the prestigious Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, which is funded by the Department of Defense. The primary aim of this program is to increase the number of civilian engineers and scientists in the U.S.

Wegrzyn holds a BA in history and MA in intelligence studies from American Military University and MLS from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Her interest in librarianship started when she returned to college after serving in Iraq with the Army National Guard. While studying to become an X-ray technologist, Wegrzyn worked full time as a library assistant at the College of Coastal Georgia.

Wegrzyn's supervisory librarian, Duressa Pujat, told her that what she really wanted was to be a librarian and that she was a "natural." These words rang true to Wegrzyn, who finished her bachelor's degree and pursued library school.

Before completing her master's degree in library science, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hired her on a conditional basis for a position in the DC/Virginia area. When there was a vacancy at the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, Wegrzyn relocated to Champaign to be part of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the research and development arm of the Corps.

"As fate would have it, I transferred into a location that is also home to the nation's number one graduate program in library and information studies. Fortuitous!"

With the SMART Scholarship, Wegrzyn can keep her position as an ERDC librarian while she upgrades/upskills to her goal of earning her PhD and pursuing her own research—focused on applying information literacy approaches to disrupt adversarial information operations. In the future, Wegrzyn would like to explore ways that gamification can strengthen one's information literacy, and the potential for artificial intelligence to help verify information, boosting individual cognitive security.

The scholarship supplements her salary, allowing her to work less than full time, while pursuing her PhD full time.

"This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and I had to go for it," said Wegrzyn of the scholarship. "Thankfully, I was selected. In all honesty, I was fully prepared to go for round two, maybe even round three if needed. As a retention scholar in the SMART program, I can stay right where I am at ERDC and the Corps of Engineers, but after finishing my PhD, I will have more research, leadership, and vertical movement opportunities."
