The PhD in Commerce syllabus is three to five years long spread across six to ten semesters. Four of the five top awards presented at the American Society for Engineering and Education Pacific Southwest Section, or ASEE PSW, annual conference this April went to faculty and students from the University of California, Davis, College of Engineering.
The 2024 conference was hosted at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and attended by four-year university and community college affiliates from Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada.

Tiffany Chan, an undergraduate biomedical engineering student, was recognized for demonstrating strong achievement in a design project, research, community service and/or education-related activities.
Ph.D. student Allison Pickle, also in biomedical engineering, was recognized for demonstrating strong evidence of commitment to education in engineering-related areas.
The third award recipient from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Assistant Professor of Teaching Xianglong Wang, was recognized for outstanding classroom performance and significant teaching-related contributions to the profession. “Early career” includes faculty members no more than five years into their first faculty positions.
Colleen Bronner, associate professor of teaching and vice chair for undergraduate studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recognized for outstanding classroom performance and significant teaching-related contributions to the profession.

The prestigious National Science Foundation award supports education, professional development and research.
This year, 12 graduate students and four undergraduates at UNC-Chapel Hill received fellowships from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program . Their research covers several STEM-related fields, including biology, sociology, genetics and anthropology.
Begun in 1952, this fellowship is the oldest of its kind directly supporting graduate students in STEM. Its purpose is not only to ensure the quality and vitality in U.S. scientific and engineering workforces but also to broaden and diversify the talent in STEM-related professions. Federal funding through a three-year stipend provides educational support, professional development and international research opportunities for recipients.
Beth Mayer-Davis, dean of The Graduate School, noted that the recipients of this year’s awards are making fundamental strides in overcoming obstacles that affect the lives of people and the environment not just in North Carolina but around the globe.
“The excellent work of these students highlights the depth of knowledge being generated through graduate education at UNC-Chapel Hill,” Mayer-Davis said. “It is this kind of impactful research that sets Carolina students apart as our next generation of leaders.”
The UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of the Materials Research Society partnered with The Graduate School to help students develop key skills and provide opportunities to network with scientific professionals. One such opportunity is the NSF GRFP peer-review workshop. This annual peer-review workshop provides senior undergraduates and first- and second-year graduate students an environment to meet one-on-one with NSF GRFP fellows.

The Purdue University graduate dietetics program within the Department of Nutrition Science integrated new technology to enhance dietitians’-in-training early experience in working one-on-one with clients who are wanting to improve their health via dietary changes.
The program used $40,000 of a $90,500 instructional equipment grant from the Purdue College of Health and Human Sciences to purchase new video cameras, microphones, cordless earpieces and other tools. This hardware has been paired with new audio/video recording software called VALT . Clinical assistant professor Rachel A. Clark uses the new technology in NUTR 51100 (Applied Nutrition Counseling) to observe, capture and review each students’ interactions with their client when they meet in one of the program’s two consultation rooms in Lyles-Porter Hall. The rest of the grant was used for upgrades in the nearby Teaching Kitchen .

This spring, the new technology was put to the test for a series of six consultations with a real client over the age of 35 for every graduate student in the class. The first visit was an hour-long assessment — a nutrition-focused physical exam, bloodwork and a conversation about the client’s nutrition-related concerns and habits — followed by five 45-minute sessions where the students and clients worked together on developing, implementing and fine-tuning realistic plans for nutrition changes that will support the client’s health goals.
“It’s real people with their real problems. They’re not actors or anything,” Clark said. “Figuring out that transition from being a student and doing case studies to actually working with a person and how different that is — it’s really eye-opening.”
Clark monitors the students’ sessions from different angles, communicating with the students through the earpiece and giving real-time feedback. The instructor can zoom in on facial expressions and the body language of the student and client. VALT allows Clark to make real-time notes within the video recording, so when students review each of their consultations, they can see Clark’s feedback and more objectively analyze the interaction.
“We have HIPAA-compliant storage and a lot more capacity in terms of what we can do and see with the videos. “Clark said. “(The students) learn so much. You see so much more when you’re out of the moment and you’re a little more relaxed.”
Right before her fourth consultation with client Lindsey Eggold, a Purdue staff member, graduate student Ali Meza-Soto said the experience working with a real client during her graduate studies has been extremely beneficial. As well, Meza-Soto’s VALT debriefing sessions with Clark right after the session and biweekly critiques with the other nine graduate students in the class have helped Meza-Soto in her confidence and expertise with each session.
“We look back immediately at the meeting we just had and evaluate it, and I think that’s really cool because it catches every angle of the meeting,” the student said. “It’s a different perspective than mine.”
The class coupled with the new technology will serve Meza-Soto well when she starts her supervised practice in the fall as a dietitian at a hospital, clinic, nursing home or school.
“It’s a very, very, very awesome opportunity because we’ve never been put in a position where we can get this real-life experience before,” Meza-Soto explained. “That is giving us a taste of what we could potentially be doing in the future. This has really given me a good idea that this is something that I really enjoy. I’m going to like counseling people.”

Scope of work: As founding dean of Loyola's School of Environmental Sustainability, Nancy Tuchman has provided vision and leadership since its inception as an institute in fall 2013. The school includes a biodiesel lab and an urban agriculture program, both student-run.
Biggest professional win: In 2020, the Institute of Environmental Sustainability was promoted to Loyola's 13th school, becoming the School of Environmental Sustainability. The school has grown to offer eight undergraduate degree programs, a Master's in Environmental Science and Sustainability and three graduate certificate programs, and serves over 500 students.
Other contributions: Tuchman's awards include the Society for Freshwater Science Fellows Award and the Leadership in Science & Education Award from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

Over the last two decades, aquatic ecologist Nancy C. Tuchman, PhD , has spearheaded the vision for sustainability at Loyola University Chicago. Since founding and directing the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy in 2005 and the Institute of Environmental Sustainability in 2013, Tuchman has led Loyola’s transformation to become one of the greenest colleges in the nation — shrinking the university’s environmental impact and preparing the next generation of eco-conscious leaders.
How did your sustainability efforts at Loyola begin, and how has the work progressed?
As someone who works in conservation, I was concerned about the university’s environmental footprint. So, in the early 2000s, I raised this issue with Loyola’s president. In 2004, the university’s capital improvement plan included a pledge to make our campuses more environmentally sustainable.
Since then, we’ve cut our water use per square foot by 34%, and we now divert 44% of campus waste from landfills through recycling or composting. Perhaps most importantly, we’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the Lake Shore Campus by nearly 80% and will be carbon neutral by 2025.
How did the School of Environmental Sustainability get started at Loyola?
We continued to build momentum with our environmental initiatives. In 2013, Loyola established the Institute of Environmental Sustainability (IES) and began to offer undergraduate degree programs. By 2019, IES had around 400 students and a graduate program. In 2020, the university expanded IES to launch the School of Environmental Sustainability.
Our focus on sustainability differentiates Loyola from our peer universities. When we surveyed incoming students this year, 57% said that commitment to the environment was important in their college decision.
How has SES grown and developed?
We now have more than 500 students, including over 60 graduate students, and undergraduates can choose from seven majors. To support this growth, we’ve nearly tripled our faculty and staff and continue building an interdisciplinary team of outstanding educators and researchers.
Our Urban Agriculture Program is one example of our impact and the engaged learning opportunities we offer. The program gives students hands-on experience with sustainable food production. Since the program started 10 years ago, students have produced more than 20,000 pounds of healthy, sustainably grown food that they donate and sell locally.
How does your work align with business trends in the corporate world?
We’re seeing growing interest in sustainability among corporate leaders and consumers. At SES, we’re equipping students with the expertise to adapt business practices for environmental sustainability.
Last year, we launched a new bachelor’s degree program in environmental economics and sustainability. This program connects environmental problems to business theories and economic analysis, preparing students to become leaders in the new green economy.
What is your vision for the future of sustainability at Loyola?
We’re currently working on our next Carbon Action Plan and intend to go beyond carbon neutrality. We aim to completely decarbonize our campuses, which means eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels and investing in new technologies. We’re already installing new geothermal systems and investigating cutting-edge heat exchange systems.
Another goal is to make Loyola a zero-waste campus. Our athletic events are already zero-waste, and we look forward to expanding on what we’ve learned to reduce and divert waste from all campus operations.

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.
So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .
"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."
But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.
He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.
That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."
For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.
"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."
He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."
While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.
Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.
"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."
While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.
For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.
"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."
Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.
The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.
The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.
As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.
"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."
