What is Digital Marketing? Why is It Important Today?

Digital marketing is a modern way of marketing where a brand is introduced to its potential customers through various digital mediums such as websites, social media services and other internet-based services. Digital marketing has become very essential for brand building today because:

  • People increasingly use the internet and social media these days. Targeting them through these digital media is easier as compared to other mediums.
  • Brands without online presence are likely to be ignored by potential customers
  • There is no limit of space when you target your potential customers through digital medium.
  • Digital marketing helps a brand begin its campaign at a reasonably lesser expenditure.

What is a Digital Marketing Personal Statement? Why Do You Need One?

A digital marketing personal statement is a 500 words long essay you will write to a college or university where you intend to do your digital marketing course. In the write-up, you will describe the qualities, strengths and experiences that make you fit for the program.

Your digital marketing personal statement is a very crucial document in your application because:

  • It says who you are and how you developed interest in digital marketing
  • It gives a sneak peek into your career aspirations
  • It shows how you are distinguished from other applicants of digital marketing
  • It explains how your skills and experiences are aligned to your passion for digital marketing

How Long Does a Personal Statement for Master’s in Digital Marketing Have to Be?

What do admission officers want to see in your digital marketing masters personal statement.

Admission officers use a checklist to validate your personal statement. So, your essay must contain the following information so as to win their approval.

  • Your academic background and how it has influenced your taste for digital marketing
  • A list of your achievements and how they moulded your passion for digital marketing
  • Your relevant skills and how you think they will help you during your formation in digital marketing
  • Your career aspirations after formation in digital marketing

How to Write a Personal Statement Digital Marketing?

Your personal statement for digital marketing should show the institute why you are the right fit for their program. To help your essay serve that purpose, you ought to approach it very specifically.

Here are the steps that will help you write it as expected.

The first step in writing your personal statement is preparation. To begin with, understand why you are required to write it and then plan your essay accordingly. Read about the institute and the course and understand the format and structure.

Check if any specific questions are asked:

Some institutes will tell you to centre your personal statement around a few questions that they ask you. If you’re required to focus on such questions, go through them carefully and plan your essay structure accordingly.

Build a strong beginning:

Try to grab the attention of your readers through the very first line of your personal statement. The introduction must provide the reader with the clarity of what to expect from the essay. Also, it should be engaging for the reader to stay focused and intrigued.

Write a body that suits the introduction:

Both the introduction of your essay and the body should complement each other. They shouldn’t be contradicting. Also, organize the body in such a way that it flows naturally and logically. Divide the body into at least four to five paragraphs with each one focusing on specific points.

Write a conclusion that stays:

Through your conclusion, you should be able to influence the reader to consider your application. For this, the conclusion must stay in the reader’s mind. Make it exceptional by reiterating the whole essay and ending it on a thankful note.

Revise your statement:

After finishing the writing, go through it a few times. Validate it against a few parameters such as the world count, structure, formatting, spelling mistakes, grammatical accuracy and more. If any area appears vague or below the standard, rectify that.

Paragraph Structure

One of the secrets to enhancing the overall appeal and acceptance chances of your digital marketing personal statement is to structure it correctly. The following structure is an accepted one and can be used in your essay.

Paragraph One – Introduction:

Introduce the reader to your essay by giving a background of yours and narrating your journey to the field of digital marketing.

Paragraph two – motivations:

Elaborate your motivations for choosing digital marketing as your career. Say how the idea of it got conceived in your mind and then developed into your passion.

Paragraph three – background:

Write a paragraph to talk about your academic formations and experiences. Try to emphasize how they pruned your relevant skills for digital marketing

Paragraph four – Achievements:

Pick up the most relevant achievements and expand them with examples and evidence. Convince the selectors that you will continue to repeat your success during the pursuit of your digital marketing program.

Paragraph five – future aspirations:

In this paragraph, talk about your aspirations about the future. How, after the completion of your digital marketing course, will you utilize the insights, skills and aptitude gained from the program for the growth of your professional journey.

Conclusion:

End your personal statement emphasizing the core points you discussed in one or two sentences briefly. Make sure to write it in such a way that it impresses the reader and stays in his mind for longer.

Digital Marketing Personal Statement Sample 1

It was in the eleventh grade that I came across this famous quote from Peter Drunker, ‘Business has only two functions- marketing and innovation’. I was studying commerce, and could well contextualize this ideology with the world around me. International business has significantly transformed with the digitization of business. In marketing, I have heard that there are no limits. When this entire process gets virtualized, well, I can make out the career prospects awaiting me. At a time when every industry is going for rapid digitization, I would like to carve out a lucrative career in the domain of digital marketing. Marketing has a significant role to play in any industry, regardless of the economy. It would be a pleasure for me to channelize my efforts to fit into a fast-growing industry where I can fervently contribute.

After all, influencing the perspective of customers is an art. Particularly, when potential clients change their standpoints without realizing that they have been cultivated, it makes a great marketer. I would like to transform my existing marketing skills, strengthening the same with my acumen, vision, and communication skills. It was my interest in marketing that compelled me to pursue an MBA. Now that I have completed my master’s degree, I would like to streamline my profile with a specialized program in digital marketing.

During my Business Administration program, I was drawn towards modules like business management. Other aspects that appealed to my intellect are internet marketing and consumer theory. The world is fast digitizing, and this is just the beginning of an eventful millennium. Through my efforts, I have mastered the basics of digital marketing and analytical aspects. Besides, I am familiar with different modules of digital marketing, such as social media marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing, etc. My flair for creativity has also helped me demonstrate my ability in blogging and developing website content. It’s intriguing to pursue a career where I can continually learn and master new trends. I am already well-versed with aspects like keyword research, running sponsored advertisements on Facebook and Google, and other social media platforms. However, I need to organize my skills and polish the same, leveraging my career with an internationally recognized degree.

It was during my graduation that I capitalized on my opportunities to work on my digital marketing skills. I remember spending my leisure hours developing a website, which I later monetized myself. My first affiliate sale came through Amazon, where I earned a commission of INR 3000. Knowing the tremendous prospect of the industry, I never looked back. Now, I am looking forward to aligning my passion and career goals, pursuing the advanced program in digital marketing from your reputed university in Canada.

During my leisure hours, I spend my time mastering fresh skills in digital marketing. I find my idol in Neil Patel, and follow his blogs regularly. I have also been working as a freelance digital marketer over the last one and a half years. It has been a pleasure for me to interact with international clients and address their needs. Particularly, I find keyword research as the most interesting pursuit, as it involves researching peoples’ interests. Besides, I find my analytical skills that I mastered during my MBA fruitful as I engage myself with these pursuits.

The world is propelling towards a digitized economy. India too has caught up fast with the developments. The government’s ‘Digital India’ campaign tells the story of career opportunities that await me in the country. However, I have already established my client base beyond the borders while working as a freelancer. This is one of the prime benefits of embracing the career as a digital marketer. Once I complete this course, I will establish my own startup in India, offering cost-effective digital marketing to every industry.

Studying in Canada will significantly improve my profile. The country has got a supportive academic environment that suits international aspirants. Besides, I have got the opportunity to learn practically through the pragmatic approach that your university is known for. Considering other aspects like the affordability of education in Canada and the safe academic environment for aspirants, I have decided to study here. The advanced program at your institution, along with the assistance from seasoned industry experts and lecturers will help me leverage my skill set. I am looking for a berth in your university to pursue the program that would help me embrace a gratifying career where national demographics never matter.

We are adding a personal statement for masters in digital marketing PDF sample here for you to go through. Pay attention to the details in it such as the writing tone, paragraph structure and grammatical accuracy.

Digital Marketing Personal Statement Example 2

Mistakes to pay attention to.

These five mistakes in digital marketing personal statements are considered grave by the admission panel.

Try to avoid them in your writing to ensure maximum acceptance chances.

Too many cliches:

From the use of inappropriate or irrelevant quotes to writing generically about your motivation for course selection, cliches spoil the beauty of a personal statement.

Not providing proof for achievements:

Anyone can claim achievements. How are you going to prove that you have made a great achievement? Claims about your achievements in personal statements should be sufficiently backed.

Not correcting the mistakes:

Even if it is a small grammatical error, it will have a significant influence in the final round of screening, especially when the admission venue is too competitive.

Lack of adherence to the requirements:

If you produce a personal statement that fails to comply with the requirements, even if it is of superclass quality, it will make no sense to the selection committee. So, understand the requirements and meet them.

Failure to customize:

Your personal statement must be customized for the purpose. In this case, you are writing it to convince the panel about your choice of digital marketing. So, write everything that makes you best in digital marketing. Produce a tailor-made essay.

6 Tips That Make Your Personal Statement Powerful

Read voraciously about digital marketing:.

Read a lot to understand the scope of digital marketing and how it will impact the world in the future.

Use simple language:

A good personal statement is not one that uses complicated language. It is one that makes the messages easily communicated to the reader.

Reflect your personality:

Listen to your heart and write. Sit quietly and try to focus on your inner thoughts that flow. Write those plainly and then prune them.

Be straight to the point:

Avoid unnecessary detailing or background information in your writing. Instead, come straight to the point.

To make your personal statement yours, being honest with your writing is essential. Don’t cook up anything to impress the reader.

Adhere to the recommended length:

Neither too short nor too long. Each word counts. Follow the recommended word count by the institute.

What Will the Future of Digital Marketing Be Like?

Digital marketing is going to be the style of marketing in the future. The world is inching towards that steadily. Studies indicate that:

  • By 2023, nearly half of the Indian population, which is approximately 700 million, will be active internet users, who can be easily reached via digital marketing.
  • Indian eCommerce market is going to be worth INR 7 trillion by 2023

As you start your marketing journey, writing a good personal statement for marketing can make all the difference in standing out in the admission tutor’s eyes.

To help you get inspired, we have gathered a collection of successful marketing personal statement examples from top marketing students. These examples showcase a variety of skills and achievements in the field, giving you a clear picture of what a winning marketing personal statement looks like.

Whether you’re applying for a marketing course or related courses, these undergraduate and postgraduate examples will provide valuable insights and tips to help you create an impactful personal statement for marketing.

Marketing Personal Statement Example

My passion for marketing started at a young age, inspired by the popular TV show Mad Men and its portrayal of the advertising industry. The show sparked my interest in the art of persuasion and the power of effective communication, and I have since been motivated to learn more about the field.

During my high school years at Chew Valley School in Bath, I was the captain of the rugby team, where I developed valuable leadership skills and the ability to work well under pressure. These skills have translated well into my work experience, where I spent two summers at McDonald’s, where I learned how to be task-focused and improve my time management skills.

In terms of academics, I have taken A-Levels in English, Biology, and Chemistry. Although these subjects are not directly related to marketing, they have helped me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, which I believe will be beneficial in my future marketing career.

My long-term goal is to become a marketing manager and to make a meaningful impact on the industry. I am fascinated by the various aspects of marketing, including market research, branding, advertising, and promotions. I am eager to learn more about these topics and to gain practical experience through internships and real-world projects. I am also interested in writing a marketing book and sharing my knowledge and insights with others who are interested in the field.

In my free time, I enjoy playing rugby and reading books. I am also an avid traveller and have visited several countries, which has broadened my perspective and exposed me to different cultures and marketing strategies. These experiences have further fuelled my interest in marketing and have given me a deeper appreciation for the global impact of the industry.

I believe that a marketing course at a UK university will provide me with the education, skills, and network to pursue my dream career. I am confident that I have the determination and motivation to succeed in the programme, and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Undergraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example

Fueled by my fervour for marketing and backed by my hands-on experience and educational foundation, I am the ideal candidate to soar in this programme.

I first became interested in marketing while reading Seth Godin’s book “Purple Cow”. The book spoke to me on a personal level and helped me understand the importance of creativity and innovation in marketing. I was inspired by Godin’s approach to marketing, which emphasizes the need to stand out and be unique in a crowded market. This resonated with me, and I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in marketing.

My work experience has also been a significant factor in shaping my interest in marketing. During my time at Cantell School, I worked part-time as a digital marketing coordinator for a secondary school web portal. In this role, I was responsible for creating and executing marketing campaigns, analyzing data, and maintaining a strong online presence for the school. This experience provided me with hands-on experience in the field of marketing and further solidified my interest in the subject.

In addition to my work experience, I have also been highly involved in various extracurricular activities, including playing basketball for my school’s team. I believe that my athletic background has taught me valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which will be useful in my future marketing career. Furthermore, my A-level studies in English, Media, and Finance have given me a strong foundation in the areas of communication, analysis, and finance, which are essential skills in marketing.

My travels around the world during my gap year have also had a profound impact on my interest in marketing. I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many people, including marketing professionals, who shared their experiences and insights into the industry. This has given me a deeper appreciation for the dynamic and ever-changing nature of marketing and has motivated me to pursue a career in this field.

Philip Kotler, another marketing thought leader, has also had a significant impact on my motivation to pursue a career in marketing. I admire his approach to marketing, which emphasizes the importance of understanding customer needs and designing strategies that meet those needs. This has inspired me to approach marketing from a customer-centric perspective and to always prioritize the needs of my target audience.

Ultimately, my goal is to become a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) and make a significant impact in the marketing industry. I am confident that with a degree in marketing from your esteemed university, I will be well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve this goal.

I am highly motivated and passionate about pursuing a degree in marketing. I believe that my work experience, academic background, and extracurricular activities make me a strong candidate for your programme. I look forward to the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge in marketing at your esteemed university.

Postgraduate Marketing Personal Statement Example

With over three years of working experience in the marketing sector, I believe I have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue advanced studies in the field.

I have been working at Grey International Marketing Agency in London, where I have been involved in a variety of international marketing campaigns for both UK and international brands. This experience has provided me with a unique opportunity to work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and to understand the complexities of the global market. I have learned the importance of market research, consumer behaviour analysis, and creative branding strategies in developing effective marketing plans.

As a driven and ambitious individual, I am constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow. My interest in digital marketing has led me to specialize in this field, and I am now proficient in social media marketing, search engine optimization, and email marketing. I am also skilled in data analytics and use it to measure the effectiveness of my marketing campaigns and make data-driven decisions.

Additionally, my experience as a basketball player in the Baker Early College team in Oregon, USA, has taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership. These skills are transferable to the marketing sector and have allowed me to work effectively with my colleagues and clients. I have also learned the importance of adaptability and resilience, especially when faced with unexpected challenges and obstacles.

I am confident that the postgraduate marketing course at your university will provide me with the advanced knowledge and practical skills to further my career and achieve my long-term goal of starting my marketing agency. I am particularly drawn to your university’s reputation for academic excellence and its commitment to providing students with real-world experiences. I am eager to learn from the experienced faculty and to engage with my peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

I am passionate about marketing and believe that this postgraduate course will provide me with the foundation I need to make a significant impact in the industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my background and qualifications with you, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Thank you for your consideration.

Why You Should Have a CV Personal Statement

By emphasizing your unique talents and skills and demonstrating why you’re the right fit for the job, a CV personal statement can help you stand out from other candidates . It will entice a hiring professional to continue reading and discover more about your skills, qualifications, experience, and achievements.

While a personal statement can help seasoned professionals with solid experience land a new job, it is also beneficial for job hunters seeking their first jobs. A CV personal statement for students allows high schoolers or undergraduates to get the job they want by summarizing their relevant academic achievements .

How to Write a Personal Statement for a CV

writer resume

Here’s how to write a CV personal statement and pitch yourself to a hiring professional:

#1. Introduce Yourself

The very first sentence of your personal statement should indicate that you’re a serious candidate for the position. Describe yourself and your work experience using strong adjectives and action verbs .

The simplest way to introduce yourself is to ask, “Who am I professionally?" and an eye-catching answer will pop out immediately.

#2. List the Skills Relevant to the Position

After you’ve introduced yourself, highlight two to three skills relevant to the position . Check out the job description and look for the required competencies; select a couple of them that refer to you, and then list them in your personal statement.

By doing so, you’ll not only tailor your statement to the role; you’ll also pass the pre-screening process carried out by an ATS hassle-free.

#3. Include a Specific Goal You Want to Achieve

The next step is to add an objective you’d like to accomplish . However, make sure that the goal isn’t solely yours; it should be in line with the company’s as well .

Mentioning a specific goal that also aligns with the company’s will make a hiring manager consider you a valuable addition to the team.

#4. Mention Your Previous Experience/Background

Having relevant experience is a one-way ticket to the next stage of the hiring process. Hence, if you possess it, mention it right away.

To do it effectively, go over the job ad again and peruse the duties and responsibilities that will await you in this position. Try to remember similar activities and experiences from previous roles and list them.

#5. Quantify Your Achievements

Listing accomplishments along with experience indeed adds some value to your personal statement for a CV. However, supporting it with measurable results gives it more credibility .

You can back up your achievements with growth percentages, value increases, budget savings, customer happiness , etc. Such quantifiable results will show a hiring professional how you can contribute to the success of their company as well.

Sample Personal Statement in Marketing

‘Rationale’ stems from our understanding of the environment in which we reside. Amongst other quirks, I was most curious about how and why things were as they were: Why is the sky blue? Why do we grow old?

This curiosity kept increasing, and it was as if I was trying to find a reason for everything, an explanation, a mathematical formula for everything around me. I saw that notions about reality seem strongly influenced by contrasting paradigms and biases already set in motion by society leaders and people of influential vocations. I was fascinated by this unique influence and thus drawn to the study of human behavior that influenced their ability to make rational (or sometimes irrational) decisions.

Marketing and Sales thus became my obsession. I had my first sale at 13. It was a 1994 Nissan sunny – a big, massive but fuel-efficient car.

Silently observing client reactions, their responses to counter offers, and facial expressions, I learned how to make and close great deals. The more closely I watched, the more obvious things became; patterns emerged – confidence in the seller or the buyer greatly influenced the outcome of the entire process, honesty cemented strong relations with the client, etc.

My bachelor served as a guiding post and introduced several opportunities which anchored my interest in consumer behavior, leading me to a major in marketing. From organizing events for the Rotary society to acquiring sponsorships, the experience intensely focused on liaison skills and project management. Funds were arranged beforehand, but the efficiency of the marketing efforts couldn’t be measured.

Whether the attendees of such events had a great time? Were the goals of the event successfully met? Such questions kept me on edge while serving as the Director of Marketing in these events.

Nearing graduation, my professors urged me to participate in person at a research conference being held in the U.S. My pilot study based on the comparison of Instagram and Facebook was well received at the conference. It was here where I got to channel my curiosity revolving around consumer behavior, which was made possible through research.

This conference helped me in penning down a second paper. It encouraged me to learn more about research regarding the rudimentary concepts involved, such as developing a questionnaire.

However, since I was introduced to research, I have always felt a deficiency in quantitative and qualitative research skills. After graduation, I was able to explore my interests rigorously. Composing scripts, guest posting, and publishing on reputable websites helped me tailor my content according to the audience, understand what they disliked, and how they responded to different content – animated, trendy, etc.

Acquiring partnerships, bidding for projects, and winning them helped secure a grip on the fundamentals of efficiency of marketing efforts. This understanding was complemented by the deployment of advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. The digital environment allowed great freedom in measuring all the hard work involved in rendering such campaigns on social media platforms.

Later on, my thirst for data-driven marketing and research brought me to Rutgers, where I learned how to use Python and R for data processing and visualization. I didn’t know how to use SPSS before; this was a huge milestone.

I was finally able to clean and manage data and ultimately interpret results. After such a divergent endeavor, I focused on my family business alongside side projects such as an initiative on mental health and a home décor business. Such feats helped me in pursuing and understanding the customer at a much personal level.

After working with the customers via a direct channel, I wanted to attend a program that could help me fortify my research skills, which would facilitate the incorporation of all this professional experience and help me make sense of all the interactions I have had with customers. At the undergraduate level, I was always at a loss when teaching the concepts of moderation, mediation, and other quantitative techniques.

Moreover, we weren’t introduced to different qualitative research techniques such as coding of interviews, etc. As a result, I was admitted to the M.S. Marketing program offered at Rutgers. Unfortunately, due to covid-related issues, I was able to join the program four weeks late. But I didn’t let that get to me. I worked hard. I was introduced to statistical techniques such as Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Linear Regression, etc.

We learned about treating outliers and the skewness of the data via SPSS. In the second semester, we were introduced to great techniques that aided researchers in comprehending consumer perception about a brand and their buying habits. Research techniques such as conjoint and multidimensional analysis helped analyze consumer buying patterns and habits in great detail and in a systematic manner. Conjoint analysis fascinated me because it sophisticatedly separates questions and generates simulations which significantly helps in price-sensitivity analysis.

It allows researchers to predict customer behavior depending on different variables, such as different colors of the products, prices, etc. The multidimensional analysis gives a 360 approach to the customer perception when subjected to different variables such as the number of locations in a city, quality of the product, etc. I was excited to finally learn how to analyze customer perceptions and whether an action related to the product yielded a return on the invested efforts.

Coincidently and much to my joy, this semester brought an analytics course on the table, Business Analytics. We learned extensively about the basics, and a project was given to us based on our specialization. I used python in data wrangling; when I had to employ Panda’s library to correct the datasets and add product names to them. Concurrently, I came across great applications which could be used to visualize data for my thesis, such as Violin plots, Geographical plots, scattered line charts, etc.

As a result of my hard work, my project was selected as a sample for the following sessions, and I was told that I had scored the highest among the entire batch of MBA and other M.S. programs. This helped me further my passion for research by aiding me in learning the visualizations required for displaying results and making sense of the data at hand. These visualizations incorporate different statistical techniques, which would be helpful in the future, such as variance present in the data, skewness of data, etc.

Recently, I attended a workshop on Mendeley. As a result, I became a certified Mendeley advisor. Progressing forward, I participated in a workshop based on bibliometric research with the aid of the R package – bibliometrix. Other software involved included PowerBI, VOSviewer, Access, etc.

Currently, I’m working on the research topic for my thesis: Color Combination of packaging and its effect on the consumer buying pattern, with a professor, presently working as an editor at several reputable publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, etc. I hope to take both quantitative and qualitative approaches in this research.

I yearn to enhance my research prowess in consumer behavior and digital marketing, including decision models, the efficiency of social media marketing, and various other fields I can explore. I want to work on streamlining the entire marketing process with the essence of understanding what the customer wants. And I believe the Ph.D. in Marketing program offered at NYU can help me acquire the professional skills required for the research I wish to conduct alongside providing a platform for much-needed experimentation in the field.

How to write persuasively

A personal statement is a short paragraph at the top of your resume which gives employers an overview of your education, skills and experience

It’s purpose is to capture the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers when your resume is first opened – encouraging them to read the rest of it.

You achieve this by writing a tailored summary of yourself that explains your suitability for the roles you are applying for at a very high level, and matches your target job descriptions .

Personal statement basics

One question candidates often ask me is , “what is the difference between a personal statement and a resume summary?”

To be honest, they are almost the same – they are both introductory paragraphs that sit at the top of your resume… but there are 2 main differences:

A personal statement tends to be used more by junior candidates (college graduates, high school leavers etc.) and is relatively long and detailed.

A resume summary tends to be favoured by more experienced candidates , and is shorter in length than a personal statement.

Personal statement vs summary

Note: If you are an experienced candidate, you may want to switch over to my resume writing guide , or example resume summaries page.

To ensure you grab recruiters’ attention with your personal statement, lay it out in the following way.

Positioning

You need to ensure that your personal statement sits at the very top of your resume, and all of it should be totally visible to readers, without the need to scroll down the page.

Do this by reducing the top page margin and minimizing the space taken up by your contact details.

CV page margins

This will ensure that your whole personal statement can be seen, as soon as your resume is opened.

We have a resume template which can help you to get this right.

Size/length

Your personal statement needs to contain enough detail to provide an introduction to your skills and knowledge, but not so much detail that it bores readers.

To strike the right balance, anything between 8-15 lines of text is perfect – and sentences should be sharp and to-the-point.

As with the whole of your resume , your personal statement should be written in a simple clean font at around size 10-12 to ensure that it can be read easily by all recruiters and employers.

Keep the text color simple, ensuring that it contrasts the background (black on white is best) and break it into 2 or even 3 paragraphs for a pleasant reading experience.

It should also be written in a punchy persuasive tone, to help you sell yourself and increase your chances of landing interviews , I cover how to do this in detail further down the guide.

Quick tip: A poorly written resume will fail to impress recruiters and employers. Use our quick-and-easy Resume Builder to create a winning resume in minutes with professional resume templates and pre-written content for every industry.

Once you have the style and format of your personal statement perfected, you need to fill it with compelling content that tells recruiters that your resume is worth reading.

Here’s what needs to go into your personal statement…

Before you start writing your personal statement, it’s crucial that you research your target roles to find out exactly what your new potential employers are looking for in a candidate.

Run a search for your target jobs on one of the major job websites, look through plenty of adverts and make a list of the candidate requirements that frequently appear.

Tailoring CV profile

This research will show you exactly what to include in your personal statement in order to impress the recruiters who will be reading it.

Education and qualifications are an important aspect of your personal statement, especially if you are a junior candidate.

You should highlight your highest and most relevant qualifications, whether that is a degree or your GED. You could potentially go into some more detail around modules, papers etc. if they are relevant to the roles you are applying for.

It’s important that you discuss the experience you have gained in your personal statement, to give readers an idea of the work you are comfortable undertaking.

This can of course be direct employed work experience, but it doesn’t have to be.

You can also include:

  • High school/college work placements
  • Voluntary work
  • Personal projects
  • Hobbies/interests

As with all aspects of your resume , the content should be tailored to match the requirements of your target roles.

Whilst discussing your experience, you should touch upon skills used, industries worked in, types of companies worked for, and people you have worked with.

Where possible, try to show the impact your actions have made. E.g.  A customer service agent helps to make sales for their employer.

Any industry-specific knowledge you have that will be useful to your new potential employers should be made prominent within your personal statement.

For example

  • Knowledge of financial regulations will be important for accountancy roles
  • Knowledge of IT operating systems will be important for IT roles
  • Knowledge of the national curriculum will be important for teachers

You should also include some information about the types of roles you are applying for, and why you are doing so. Try to show your interest and passion for the field you are hoping to enter, because employers want to hire people who have genuine motivation and drive in their work.

This is especially true if you don’t have much work experience, as you need something else to compensate for it.

Resume personal statement mistakes

The things that you omit from your personal statement can be just as important as the things you include.

Try to keep the following out of your personal statement..

Irrelevant info

Any information that doesn’t fall into the requirements of your target roles can be cut out of your personal statement. For example, if you were a professional athlete 6 years ago, that’s great – but it won’t be relevant if you’re applying to advertising internships, so leave it out.

Generic clichés

Poor resume profile

If you are describing yourself as a “ dynamic team player with high levels of motivation and enthusiasm” you aren’t doing yourself any favours.

These cliché terms are vastly overused and don’t provide readers with any factual details about you – so keep them to a minimum.

Stick to solid facts like education, skills , experience, achievements and knowledge.

If you really want to ensure that your personal statement makes a big impact, you need to write in a persuasive manner.

So, how do you so this?

Well, you need to brag a little – but not too much

It’s about selling yourself and appearing confident, without overstepping the mark and appearing arrogant.

For example, instead of writing.

“Marketing graduate with an interest in entering the digital field”

Be creative and excite the reader by livening the sentence up like this,

“Marketing graduate with highest exam results in class and a passion for embarking on a long and successful career within digital”

The second sentence is a much more interesting, makes the candidate appear more confident, throws in some achievements, and shows off a wider range of writing skills.

Even in the height of the recent financial crisis when several companies had to scale back their advertising spend, instead of reduction, online advertising saw an increase in spend. The chief reason for this is hinged on the accountability that digital marketing offers. Through digital media, brands could confidently increase their online marketing spends and monitor the campaigns with ease while also determining the effectiveness or failure in the shortest time possible. This has inspired a lot of interest for professionals with advanced knowledge to coordinate digital marketing operations.

My goal is to grow into the position of a Regional Manager for Digital Marketing in MTN – one of Africa’s leading telecommunication companies. And seeing that my peers at MTN Ghana would soon be holding managerial positions in the next couple of years (maximum of 7 years), there is need for me to prepare myself for the opportunities ahead. The knowledge I’ll gain will also enable me to start proffering effective and efficient solutions that will aid me to grow into a thought leader in this field.

From my recent certification courses that covered marketing strategy, storytelling, digital marketing, creativity for business growth amongst others, I have come to realize that my unique combination of skills would perfectly meet the criteria for an advertising/marketing manager. And considering my love for technology and the huge influence technology now has on how organizations handle and coordinate their advertising and marketing, I am inclined to obtaining a higher education that will help me explore digital marketing in-depth. I am certain of this because, in 2017 when I was first appointed as a Go-to-market Analyst at MTN Ghana, I was directly involved in developing 360 0 approaches of product proposition and services to the market using digital media. Within eight months, the task of driving service delivery and availability for VAS, Data and Digital services was added to my portfolio. My evident talents did not escape the notice of the senior executives, which led to my unprecedented promotion to Acting Manager Go-to-Market Analyst: this particular role meant that I would directly influence any action that involved creating sustainable, profitable, market volume and value-adding digital services at MTN Ghana.

Motivation and background.

Growing up, I have learned that the growth of the internet of things has brought a lot of advantages to the companies and have changed the social landscape. My desire to pursue this course is passion driven and market-oriented. Businesses are woven into every part of our lives and marketing plays a key role in influencing our decisions. By understanding and developing relationships with consumers, businesses can be less obtrusive and more enriching to our lives; this in turn will grow more sustainable businesses.

This intersection between people and brands is a key area of interest which I am determined to build my knowledge and career on.

During my BSc course, emphasis was placed on observing user behaviour to find key insights. The empathy this human centred method gave me ultimately led to better designed products and services. I applied this to my role at Studio Make Believe as I analysed brand identities and the way they were perceived, to design products that effectively communicated their stories.

I also developed a research document expressing key insights for potential growth areas that the brand implemented. I saw the importance of marketing to develop creative strategies for more effective brand experiences.

Presenting products to clients and negotiating prices with suppliers gave me a practical outlook on the entire product lifecycle as well as the challenges of communicating across cultures. Due to these interactions, I am eager to learn strategic methods of branding and business management on an international platform.

I have been influenced by talks on the theory of affordances and explored the practical applications of behavioural economics in the International Design Camp. I collaborated with students from various disciplines to design services that would improve dental health in young children.

The experience made me considerate of many possible applications to marketing practices. I am eager to apply this design thinking and develop analytical skills in the Consumer Behaviour module. In the near future, I aim to pursue a career orienting brands and market research.

A personal endeavour to start my own business began as I travelled parts of India to better understand a culture I am a part of but have not really known. I noticed brands that we are familiar with at home were portrayed slightly differently to suit lifestyles of eastern consumers, whilst retaining their core image.

This drew me to connect with local manufacturers to design modern homewares, uniting traditional materials with a strong sense of functionality, that could be well received in western lifestyles. I saw the narrative of the collaborative process as a strong selling point.

Working with small communities to evolve dying crafts was a rewarding experience despite challenges of language barriers and differences in work ethic. I plan to turn this passion into a business. Taking this course would equip me with the practical and theoretical knowledge of all aspects of international marketing to achieve my long-term goal of making it a success.

Working as a manager and tutor for a local business has fed my appetite for analytical thinking. The learning environment has been advantageous to my creative career as it demands a flexible mind. I have seen the business grow from its humble beginnings, allowing me to see the value of marketing in the many roles I took, from designing the logo to managing other people.

I have seen the importance of the relationship between people and business on small and large scales. I believe this is more vital now to due globalisation and ever-growing digital economy. Businesses must now work harder to understand global cultures and values whilst upholding their own identity. Therefore International Marketing is crucial in grasping this area.

The research environment at King’s would allow me to build on insights which are critical to uncovering practical solutions to close this gap. I hope to contribute to discussions and develop knowledge for my personal development. I strive to better myself and would be honoured to resume my studies at King’s. The international reputation and global environment would stimulate and support my development.

Postgraduate Personal Statement Example: eBusiness Management

Examining a wide range of examples of personal statements can be helpful when applying to a university or college course.

After all, personal statement examples can teach you how to write and structure your application, and you can quickly learn how to write a personal statement by examining others.

But with so many university personal statement examples available, how do you know if you’re reading a good one?

Postgraduate personal statements should highlight relevant academic and practical experience, research skills and ambitions and their suitability for the course. This postgraduate personal statement example for eBusiness Management considers these three critical elements.

Studying master’s degree personal statement examples can be especially valuable. They’re sometimes referred to as personal mission statements or statements of purpose , so if you’re tasked with writing a personal mission statement, the following example will work for you.

I’ve broken down this personal statement example section by section, with a commentary on each element.

That way, you’ll see its strengths and weaknesses and get some inspiration for your own personal statement .

Personal Statement Example: Introduction

“Digitally mediated business, especially e-business, thrived in the pandemic. Social media, online courses and shopping united global and local communities. To better understand the digital marketing profession, I participated in real-world business experiences, competed in national advertising festivals, interned in various industries and conducted formal research into marketing-related disciplines. I am now ready to develop my knowledge of this sector more formally, and I am confident that this MSc in eBusiness Management will provide me with the academic depth to complement my ongoing research practice.”

My Commentary and Analysis

This introductory paragraph is in summary form. The writer has made it clear that they have a background in the subject they are applying for, used language and ideas from the industry to add depth and detail, and made the case for further study.

They have also made the distinction between professional background and the need for further academic research, which indicates to the reader that they understand the function and purpose of studying on a postgraduate course.

Although these elements are all positive ones to include, the lack of specific personal information, along with the brevity of this introduction, makes it seem a little too superficial and generic.

There’s not actually very much here to grab the reader’s attention, build engagement or set the applicant apart from the crowd, which would all be valuable strategies here.

Personal Statement Example: Academic Background

“As an undergraduate, I explored the impact of datafication and digital integration on our globalised world. Examining academic and empirical investigations into ongoing mediatisation indicated that deep digitisation and the embedded networks of countless digital footprints foster a digital society that transcends national boundaries and facilitates greater interconnectedness and cultural flow. Studying Technical & Labour Economics and Principles of Management allowed me to cultivate a firm understanding of international commercial dynamics and hone my market insights, whilst quantitative modules such as Probability & Statistics and Calculus introduced me to analytical methods including regression, optimisation and statistical programming. Participating in a capstone programme organised by Marshall Business School, I mastered valuable media marketing strategies and cultivated a global business perspective. Equally, studying Social Research Theory and Techniques developed my understanding of social science research methods and statistical programming.”

My Commentary and Analysis

This paragraph, which covers undergraduate study, is logically placed and far stronger than the introduction. The writer has used detailed and relevant language to indicate a depth of knowledge which could be applied to the course and shown a breadth of experiences which prepare them well.

In particular, they have indicated what they studied and identified key modules by name, developing this to show exactly what they learned from the process. This is an ideal strategy, as it shows the reader that the applicant is an active and engaged learner who understands the value of knowledge. It’s far more effective than a simple list.

It would have been even more effective if the writer had then made direct connections with the content of the course they are applying for and indicated how their prior learning had prepared them well for the demands they might face as a graduate student.

Showing how previous learning has prepared you for future learning is critical in a personal statement example, as it helps the reader see the validity and purpose of your application.

Personal Statement Example: Research Experience

“My research experiences have prepared me comprehensively for this MSc. Working with Dr Julius Burrows, I was proud to present a research project into marketing choices on e-commerce platforms at a recent conference on Information Economy, Data Modeling and Cloud Computing. Similarly, as the author of “Building an Evaluation System for Corporate Social Responsibility to Employees” in GlobalPlanet (Aug 2022), I focused on evaluating sustainable corporate social responsibilities in global enterprises. Using the indicators proposed by the official Social Responsibility Standard to form an evaluation matrix, we employed the catastrophe progression method to calculate and analyse CSR degrees for an employee sample.”

Commentary and Analysis

An impressive paragraph that shows a depth of research experience. Being able to indicate faculty members you have worked with and projects you have contributed to is often an essential element in a master’s personal statement, and the depth of experience here is convincing.

Although the material is relevant to the course being applied for, it still doesn’t formally connect with the course content, which is a shame, as if the writer had indicated here how these experiences had qualified them for specific elements of the course, if would have made this section outstanding.

Having contributed to published work, the writer demonstrates their academic credentials well. The only discordant element now working through this personal statement example is that the introduction, which focused on professional and industry experience, now seems out of place.

Having set up a personal statement that was likely to focus on the writer’s professional background, the focus has now shifted to academics, challenging the logic of the opening section.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience

“Working in the Project Portfolio Management team at Buckley Jones, I collaborated with overseas colleagues and participated in data collection, comparison, analysis and prediction using Pivot Table in Python. I learned how crucial data is to corporate decision-making and the extent to which global organisations rely on data to strategize and drive influence. As a marketing intern at WeGo Food Group, I was responsible for strategic planning and campaign implementation. I investigated digital trends in content design, production and dissemination to promote a new product line, undertook comprehensive research and crafted branding strategies that employed livestream marketing on platforms such as TikTok and WeChat.”

My Commentary and Analysis:

This section connects more obviously with the introductory content and provides a welcome sense of balance within this personal statement example. Illustrating the ways in which they have developed skills and experience in the professional realm underpins the application very successfully and shows depth of understanding in a practical context.

Programming skills are mentioned, along with social media experience, and these are all relevant. Again, no links are made to the content of the course being applied for, and no explicit links are made between these experiences and their value to successfully completing the course. This is a missed opportunity, as the clearer those links are, the greater the chance of an admissions reader seeing the value in your application.

The one thing that all successful personal statements have in common is that they are concise, engaging and accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Consequently, I always recommend Grammarly to my students and clients.

Personal Statement Example: Conclusion

“In the future, I aim to create a fashion brand and leverage my expertise and experience to expand market share and maximise brand influence. Consequently, I am confident that this MSc programme’s Digital Marketing specialism will fully support my future academic and professional ambitions. I intend to develop the skills necessary for real-world practice in courses such as Big Data and Marketing Technology and Digital Marketing, Strategy and Management . I am particularly interested in addressing contemporary creative challenges in the context of digitisation in your Digital Retail Strategy module. The eCustomer Relationship Management course is a critical aspect of my future study goals, as it will allow me to combine academic knowledge with praxis, take a strategic approach to critically evaluating complex organisational structures and determine appropriate implementation plans.

As a postgraduate student, I aim to apply my interdisciplinary background in communications, business acumen and strategic thinking to master technologies critical for delivering powerful levels of transformation within the digital marketing sector. I look forward to collaborating with international students and faculty and developing the skills necessary to drive innovation, productivity and profitability in a global business environment.”

The writer outlines their ambitions in this concluding section and ensures that these are relevant to the course outcomes, which is a sound strategy. When your ambitions can be facilitated by the course content, and a reader can see the connection between your ambition and your application, you are far more likely to be made an offer.

There’s also mention here of course modules, and the writer has phrased this in such a way as to show their depth of research and understanding of the content. This is an excellent approach, as it allows a reader to see that the writer has engaged with and understood the relevant literature.

As such, they are far more likely to be applying for the right course and to be successful as a student.

The very last paragraph is quite general. It reads well but doesn’t really add anything new to the personal statement. It does show an understanding of business processes and the role the writer intends to play in these, and there is mention of collaboration, but in very general terms.

It would have been far more effective for the writer to outline their aims for postgraduate research, to discuss transferable skills and to consider the value they are capable of bringing to the faculty. What wider skills do they have? How would the university benefit from having this applicant on-site? What positives would they contribute?

In summary, a convincing and concise personal statement showing a high level of suitability for the course. However, it lacks enough direct connections with the content, a deeper analysis of transferable skills and value, and has a somewhat confusing (and perhaps irrelevant) opening section.
