Essay on My Elder Brother for Children

February 20, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Family plays an important role in a person’s life. A good family support system enables a person to have a positive outlook towards life and builds up moral values and strengthens good thoughts in him.

Family members play a vital role in shaping a person’s character right from the time he is a toddler till he becomes elderly and wise.

The values inherited from the family members to the next generations are reflected in their ways and deeds.

In our society, elders are treated with great respect, owing to the legacy and knowledge they have acquired through their experience.

Their words of wisdom never fail to guide youngsters in the right path and ready to take on life’s responsibility.

Table of Contents

Importance of Sibling

We all live in an interdependent society where every human being relies on the other, directly or indirectly, in various forms for fulfillment of their needs.

Children depend on parents for their education and progress in life. Parents seek happiness from their children in the process of seeing them grow into responsible adults.

Siblings learn virtues of caring and sharing by staying together in a family.

Happiness is established in a family by mutual understanding and creating harmonious relationships mainly between the younger members of the family.

A brother in an elder role in the family protects and guides his younger siblings in the right manner.

He cares for his younger counterparts when they seek help and holds their hands when they need his support.

My Elder Brother as a Person

My elder brother who is also my guide and good friend always considers family as his priority and family members’ hold the most important place in his heart.

The positive outlook maintained by my elder brother motivates me to excel in all my tasks, however tough they seem to be.

At work, he maintains a very professional outlook and outperforms in his projects with least intervention from his senior colleagues.

Consistent performance at his work place has brought him many laurels and appreciation from senior team members of his project.

Personally, I have known my elder brother as a source of motivation to all my cousins since he always holds a very positive attitude towards life.

He encourages his younger counterparts to excel in the field they are passionate about and disbelieves in traditional thought systems.

An open minded person that he is, he always looks for ways to improve himself, both on the personal front and professionally too.

One Person, Many Roles

A big source of positive inspiration to our whole family, my brother binds all family members together with his warmth and grace.

To my grandparents, he is a wonderful combination of care, warmth and high respect, all put together in a big bundle of joy.

My parents are absolutely proud of their son, be it for his success in work or the understanding he shares with all family members.

They uphold the fact that they have been blessed with the most wonderful son, one could ever ask for.

As a younger sister to my brother, I always grew up in his guidance, for matters on career choices to taking the right decisions in life.

No matter how big my brother would become, he is always the strong pillar of support and wonderful being for my parents.

Qualities I Admire in Him

My Elder Brother

Completing everyday tasks on the same day and not postponing them for the next day makes life easier for him.

He gives attention to detail and is a keen observer too.

Cleanliness is his top priority and be it his workplace or his personal space, they always look tidy and in order.

Organizing his tasks and completing them in order leaves little room for error.

His personal qualities include, being down to earth and humble and showing respect and compassion for other fellow beings around him.

My brother admires good qualities in others and focuses on the positive side of a person.

My Brother’s Areas of Interest

My brother excelled in studies right from his school days and was equally competitive in extracurricular activities as well.

Balancing his love for volley ball and managing his studies with equal importance gave him opportunities to learn multi-tasking at a very young age.

Photography is another hobby he pursued till he graduated from college and the many photographs that he captured in those days are still with him as pieces of beautiful memories.

Being a voracious reader of non-fiction books, he spent most of his time reading when he was not occupied with any other activity.

Travelling with family and friends to new places every year gave him enough opportunity to learn something unique about every land he visited.

A Small Piece of Advice Too!

My elder brother is no doubt a versatile person and handles all his roles and responsibilities with utmost respect and dignity. But every person has short comings and so does my brother too.

A workaholic that my brother is, I would advise my brother to get engaged in other activities during the weekends that would enable him to refresh and re-energize his mind again.

Spending more time with family members would further strengthen the roots from within and provide a supportive framework in one’s life.

Prioritizing health and taking a day off from the usual routine will help rejuvenate our own self and provide a more holistic view towards life.

Placing things in a Nutshell

Every girl has a dream to have an elder brother who will never stop guiding her correctly and advising her through the path she takes.

Learning from the many wonderful qualities that you possess, it has always been an advantage in many ways to me.

Drawing inspiration from your work ethics and strong will power motivates people around you and creates positive influences on them.

Showing compassion towards pets and treating them with care and love brings about the softer qualities in you.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Brother’ for Primary Classes

A 10-line essay on ‘my brother’ for children, short paragraph on ‘my brother’, long essay on ‘my brother’ for kids, what will your child learn from the essay.

Sibling relationships play a significant role in how children form friendships in their peer group and bond with other children. Whether younger or older, a brother is every child’s best friend. An older brother is the person who cares for the younger sibling, apart from the parents in the family. Many children think their brothers are a blessing and are lucky to have them. ‘My Brother’ is a common topic for essays assigned as classwork or for an exam. Younger kids may be full of emotions when thinking about their brother, but find it challenging to put their feelings on paper. Here we present a few sample essays for children of classes 1, 2 and 3 to make it easier for them.

Although ‘My Brother’ is a simple topic for most children, if your kid is an only child, then they may need help to be able to write from their imagination. They can refer to these sample essays to get plenty of ideas for what to write about a brother. They touch upon the little details about how siblings bond and their interaction in different circumstances. Here are some key points to note writing an essay on ‘My Brother’.

  • Children in class 1 can write essays in a few lines by sticking to simple facts and thoughts about sibling relationships. Some examples include their brother’s name, their favourite toy, details about what makes them special, their talents and something funny.
  • For long essays, children will have to write it in the form of a fun story so the readers can enjoy the topic. They can touch upon specific events that they would like to share in the essay, the good habits and behaviour of the brother.
  • When talking about their brother, children can focus on all the positive aspects of the sibling such as how well behaved they are, how the elder brother motivates them and how he is a role model for the younger sibling.

When talking about a brother, focus on the best parts of the relationship. Here is an example of a 10-line essay for classes 1, 2 and 3. You can modify it with some fun memories and observations to make it special.

  • I have a younger brother who is only four years old.
  • He is very playful, active and sometimes mischievous.
  • His name is Arjun. He often plays with his toys and runs all around the house.
  • Arjun is loved by everyone in my family and even in our neighbourhood.
  • I love my brother very much, although he sometimes takes and breaks my toys.
  • My parents always tell me that I should be more patient with him because he is younger than me.
  • My brother and I play every day after school.
  • Since he is younger than me, it is my responsibility to keep him safe when playing outdoors.
  • He loves listening to our grandma’s stories. We sleep in the same room.
  • My brother is a blessing to our family, and he is my favourite person.

When writing a short paragraph on ‘My Brother’, kids can focus on expressing their thoughts and feelings in a short story. They can include things they adore about their brother and even add the mischievous and fun bits. Here is a sample essay suitable for students of class 2:

My brother’s name is Rahul, and he is five years old. He is a very energetic and mischievous kid, loved by everyone in our neighbourhood. I also find him very cute, although sometimes he annoys me when he interrupts my playtime or takes my toys. We are best friends most of the time. Sometimes, we fight, but soon after, we apologise to each other and become best friends again.

Rahul studies in kindergarten, so he has to recite many poems and rhymes. When our mother is not making him study, he plays with me. We play lots of games, such as cricket and video games. When I go out to play with friends, he also demands to come. But my mother always warns me to take care of him as my friends are older and he is too young to play the games we play. I also worry about his safety and avoid taking him when I’m heading far away from the house. He gets upset when that happens but becomes alright after I trade my snacks with him.

My brother is my favourite person in the whole world. I love him very much and sometimes I wish he never grows bigger!

Long essays for children of class 3 can be tricky to write. Students will have to gather their ideas and arrange them in a proper sequence such that the paragraph has a good flow. It can be written as a descriptive essay about my brother to make a good impression. Here is an example:

My brother’s name is Akash, and he is five years old. He is a member of my family and my best friend. Everybody in my neighbourhood loves him as he is a very playful and cute kid. I enjoy playing with my brother very much. After finishing school, I always find him at home because his playschool ends early. After coming home from playschool, he goes to sleep. Sometimes, he stays awake and plays by himself till I get home. When I return from school, we drink milk and go outside to play. Akash loves to play cricket or any other game that I enjoy. He follows me wherever I go and participates in all my activities. Sometimes, it is difficult to manage him because he is very young, and my mother worries about his safety.

Besides playing with me, Akash loves to work with my grandfather in the garden. Although he doesn’t understand it much, he does everything my grandfather tells him to do. When left to himself, he plays in the wet mud with his scoop toy and messes his shirt. After playing in the evening, we both take a shower and get ready to do our homework. My mother helps us with the homework, but he is not always cooperative. Sometimes, the only thing he wants to do is play. After dinner, our grandmother reads us a bedtime story. My brother and I sleep in the same bedroom. Sometimes he gets nightmares and cries in sleep or wakes me up.

Akash is a very bright young kid in his playschool. All the teachers love him, and he has many friends. He is a calm boy but can also become very enthusiastic while playing games. His best friend is his classmate Aanya who is also our neighbour. When not with me, he plays with her.

On weekends my parents take us out to the mall. He loves to eat ice cream or anything sweet. I love my brother, but sometimes he fights with me when I don’t share my toys. But after every fight, we always say sorry to each other and become best friends again. My brother is a blessing to our family as he makes us all happy.

Essay writing is an essential exercise for your child to learn how to think and express their ideas coherently. The composition on their brother will encourage them to come up with plenty of ideas on what can be written about their sibling. Writing an essay is also a great way for your child to think of their relationship with their sibling and view them in a positive light. If your kid is a single child, the examples in the sample essays will give them some ideas for what can be written in an essay.

Writing about their sibling will make them connect with their feelings and emotions and encourage them to express them articulately.

My brother is a frequently asked essay topic for class assignments and exams. The samples given in this article set a good example for children in classes 1, 2 and 3. Essay writing is a good exercise to build writing skills which will be helpful as they progress through school. They can further expand on the given examples and add their own ideas to make them creative.

Paragraph on My Elder Brother- by Jenny

my older brother essay

Introduction:

Not many of us are blessed or lucky enough to have an elder brother who is always our pillar of strength and support.

However, I am very fortunate enough to have an elder brother to whom I could turn around for all my needs at any point of time.

A very strong and supportive person, yet very authoritative too, he is. I just love him, no matter what.

My Big B and me:

We are just two siblings and I am the youngest to my parents. Right from my childhood, my brother has always been my Hero and will always continue to be too. I have always looked upon him for all the things that I do. He is so organized, systematic and has great values and I learn all these values from him. Though many at times, we do fight and quarrel, he is the best. One minute we fight like cats and dogs and the next minute we are so much in reunion that I have seen my mom stare at us in surprise!!

ADVERTISEMENTS:

We have had big and small fights. Sometime our fights just last for a few minutes, but at other times we literally fight very badly and may take some time to get reunited. Though he is good at all other things, he is very short-tempered and this leads to fights most of the time. But when he is in good mood, we do play a lot many games and he does makes for me so many small toys that I just love and treasure.

These were all that we used to do as kids. As we grew, our bonds got stronger and stronger, and today he is my best pal. A person, in whom I could confide anything that I want to, is my elder brother. Whenever I have a problem, it is my brother to whom I run first for help. He always has a solution to all my problems.

As time passes by, we have been distanced in our journey called life, in search of our life destinations. However, no matter where we are, we know that we are there for each other and distance have never been a boundary, when we need each other. He has always been by my side at every stage of my life and still continues to be.

No matter how old we may grow or how far we may be, he will always be my Big Brother and I would still remain as his one and only little sister. A brother is blessing which makes you sure that, all through your life, you have a strong shoulder to lean on and wide open arms with a tight hug to comfort you , through all your tested times. I love my brother and he is ‘The Best’, anybody could ever dream off.

My Grandfather-in-Law, My Roommate

Life lessons from a 97-year-old lawyer of the old school.

An illustration shows the silhouettes of a young family standing at a window next to an old man with a walker.

By Teddy Wayne

My wife and I unexpectedly lost our Brooklyn lease in the summer of 2022. With preposterous rents all around us, we decided to save money and postpone our real estate predicament by moving, for one year, into her grandfather’s apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

We made odd roommates, at least for his address, the same building Joan Didion had lived in: the two of us, a couple of kids under 5, and the 97-year-old Robert M. Pennoyer.

Bobby, as he was known, was born into a life of patrician privilege. His education at Harvard was accelerated so he could serve in the Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Pensacola. He earned a law degree, battled Joseph McCarthy as a Pentagon staffer in congressional hearings, married a fellow blue-blooded but free-spirited woman who wrote poetry, helped found a halfway house in East Harlem, and became a staunch abortion rights advocate in his later years.

One time he took a London Towncar to attend a Black Lives Matter meeting — just about the literal definition of a limousine liberal, but nevertheless inspiring for a nonagenarian born four decades before the Civil Rights Act. (“They told me I’m ‘woke,’” he happily announced.)

He was far from religious — the separation of church and state was his other legal passion — but before holiday meals he’d say: “For those who are hungry, give them food. For those who have food, let them hunger for justice.”

He was a throwback to a distant era and mien, speaking in a Locust Valley lockjaw reminiscent of Thurston Howell III , an unerring practitioner of a noblesse oblige that seems to be dying out among today’s one percent.

I was terrified that our son, starting pre-K, would bring home Covid and cause his great-grandfather’s demise. Perhaps my anxiety rubbed off on him, because he began asking us when Bobby would die, and, inevitably, if our immediate family would, too. We assured him that we wouldn’t for a long time, but that Bobby might, and it was OK, because he’d lived a full life and was ready — sentiments he himself had begun communicating that year.

Though you wouldn’t have known it from his chipper attitude in the mornings, when he’d come out of his bedroom with his walker, in slacks and a crisp button-down. Nora, his devoted aide, would ask him how he’d slept. “Terrific!” he’d say as I shuffled past them bleary-eyed in my sweatpants with holes in the knees.

I tried to make myself helpful around the house, scanning documents for him, troubleshooting his finicky cable box, yelling at phone fraudsters when he was in danger of being scammed. I discovered he was overpaying for his internet and phone and saved him over a hundred dollars a month — a drop in the bucket for him, but it made me feel better about freeloading.

His family’s wealth, by his account, had come with a paucity of warmth. As a result of his detached upbringing, and maybe as a greatest-generation member for whom stoicism was nearly mandated for survival, he went most of his life without expressing himself much to others.

His wife’s depression when their children were young was another likely factor; during her hospitalizations, he had to be the family’s rock. In his 90s, in the E.R. after a heart attack scare, a doctor asked how anxious he was feeling, on a scale of 1 to 10, as part of a study. “One,” he declared, half an hour removed from a near-death experience. No, the doctor clarified, one was the lowest number. “Yes, one,” Bobby repeated with his usual jaunty sang-froid.

He’d been fortunate — very fortunate — to lead a full life, as we’d told our son, but he hadn’t necessarily been allowed to have a full emotional life.

His natural reserve softened in his final decade, when he began telling people he loved them as he said goodbye at the end of a phone call or a visit — something he’d apparently never been able to do before. He said it to me, too, especially that year we lived with him.

He was a voracious reader who, despite not being the target audience, read several of my novels, and he frequently told me he admired me. It felt absurd to be on the receiving end of reverence concerning things I had written in those tattered sweatpants from a war veteran more than twice my age whose philanthropic efforts had been devoid of ego.

Telling anyone besides my wife and children that I love them isn’t always the easiest thing for me, either. But with Bobby — maybe because he’d had similar struggles — it wasn’t nearly as fraught, and I’d say it back to him before putting the kids to bed.

On a warm day last August, he asked me to retrieve a sweater from his bedroom. Just a little chilly, he said. The next day he was too sick to get out of bed. His four children, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren quickly gathered to pay their respects.

When it was my wife’s and my turn, Nora told him who was coming in to see him. Bobby lay on a portable hospital bed, eyes closed but awake. I’d never seen someone on his deathbed and was nervous — a nine out of 10. I feared I’d clam up or, worse, spew bromides that would make for a regrettable valediction.

I put my hand on his arm. Soon after I started saying that neither of my own grandfathers had shown me the kind of love he had, and that it had been such a gift to live with him and become part of his family, I broke down but was able to power through.

With his eyes still shut, he said, “Get my checkbook — I want to give you some money for your honeymoon.”

My wife and I chuckled at his characteristic reflex of largess through the fog of morphine, particularly since we’d been married for seven years, and I told him that wasn’t necessary. But he wasn’t finished with me.

“From the moment I saw you I loved you,” he told me. “I knew right away that Peter was the one for Molly.”

Molly is my wife’s sister; Peter is the boyfriend she’d moved in with a couple of weeks earlier whom he’d met a handful of times.

As another round of laughter cut the tension in the room, Nora reminded him that it was Teddy he was talking with, but he didn’t appear to get it.

I went back the next day to repeat my speech, again while tearing up. This time he was barely conscious and certainly didn’t hear me.

But that was all right. The important thing was that I’d managed to get the words out when I said goodbye.

Teddy Wayne is the author of “The Winner,” “The Great Man Theory” and four other novels.
