Deep Rock Galactic: How to Change Class

Image of Ashley Shankle

New players may find themselves lost on how to change class in Deep Rock Galactic . There are four classes to switch between, each one with its own unique abilities to make use of on assignments. Like any other games with classes, though, you’ll want to try them all out to find the best role for you.

Changing classes in Deep Rock Galactic is easier than you might think, and we’ll go over it as well as why you may not be able to change class in this guide.

How to Change Class in Deep Rock Galactic

If you’ve just started Deep Rock Galactic and are doing the tutorial assignment, you will not be able to change class until you either leave the tutorial or finish it. The tutorial must be done with the Gunner.

There are four total classes in Deep Rock Galactic :

You cannot change class while in an assignment ; you can only change class in the lobby.

Go to your (or any other player’s) quarters and look for the Character Selection terminal , which will be to the right if you’ve just spawned or to the left if you’re coming in from the main area of the lobby. Use the Character Selection terminal then make your selection, and you’ll be able to switch to any other dwarf you’d like!.

It’s worth noting that you can’t change class to one that overlaps another, so if you can’t select a dwarf it’s because someone else in your game is currently playing that class.

There is actually a way to get around DRG not allowing duplicate classes : When loading into another player’s game, you can press the “Q” or “E” keys on PC or the triggers on console to swap classes. This can overwrite the game not normally allowing duplicate classes, but only if you do not choose a class while in a solo lobby beforehand.

Deep Rock Galactic: How to change your character and class

how to change assignments in deep rock galactic

Last Updated on: 26th June 2022, 07:56 pm

Deep Rock Galactic features 4 different Dwarf character class options to choose from, so here’s how you can swap between them and change.

How to change your class in Deep Rock Galactic

You’ll spawn in a personal crew pod following missions as well as when you start a new session of Deep Rock Galactic. In this pod is a console used to swap character classes, located to the right-hand side of you, near the door. Approach the character selection console and click a different class, then confirm it to swap.

The player home room pod in deep rock galactic

It’s worth bearing in mind after swapping out your Dwarf for another that you are changing both character and class. Each distinct one has separate cosmetics, weapons and abilities – nothing really transfers between them.

So if you’ve got a god-tier Engineer with plenty of cosmetics sorted out, or a high-tier scout with incredibly potent weapons; it doesn’t mean your Driller is quite geared up yet for when you change your character to him in Deep Rock Galactic.

swapping from engineer to driller in deep rock galactic

Changing your character using this is a good thing to know in advance; sometimes you just need a different character for a different role in Deep Rock. A Gunner or Engineer is great in a team but can be a bit clunkier in Solo play than a Scout or Driller would be.

You can still get away with playing any of them solo regardless, of course, but some classes really are simply suited for different jobs better than others, so mixing and matching to suit what you or your team need at the time is the best bet most of the time.

That’s all you’ll need to know to change up your character and class in Deep Rock Galactic miners, though the two terms are effectively interchangeable due to the nature of the game.

Good luck with your next expedition, and if you struggle, you might want to get used to Deep Rocks Resupply system to make things a bit easier.

Overview Space Rig Promotion

how to change assignments in deep rock galactic

The Promotion Assignment doesn't have to be done on the class that is being promoted. The player may choose to undertake the required missions on any class, just like any other assignment.

Promotion Benefits

how to change assignments in deep rock galactic

After any one class is promoted, the player is permanently granted access to the following. These effects are account-wide and apply to all four classes.

  • The ability to activate Machine Events randomly found in the caves of Hoxxes IV
  • New assignments: Breach The Core and the Weekly Core Hunt
  • Access to the Forge

In addition, the first promotion of a class confers the following benefits for that class only :

  • Access to Deep Dives
  • +1 Active Perk Slot
  • +1 Honor Badge

Promotions of any class beyond the first one provide the following rewards:

Matrix Core

Honor Badge

how to change assignments in deep rock galactic

Honor Badge represents the amount of time the player has put into their dwarves, tracked separately for each class. It is granted upon first promotion and borders the character portrait with a bronze border and one white star. Every subsequent promotion will add another white star, for a maximum of three. After the fourth promotion, the border switches from bronze to silver, and the amount of white stars is reset back to one. Upon reaching three more promotions, the border switches from silver to gold, then gold to platinum, platinum to diamond, and finally diamond to legendary - the highest border for the Honor Badge.

Promotions after that will not change the border, however will still allow the player to continue gaining class levels . The game tracks how many times each class is promoted even past Legendary III, when promotions don't bring any visual change.

The list of Honor Badges goes as follows:

Promotion Costs

The costs of promoting the same class increase in a linear fashion after each promotion, but this increase is separate for each of the four classes.

Croppa

Detailed costs for each class and promotion can be found in the table below.

  • Promotions were known as Retirement in Update 18: Job Opportunities and changed in Update 19 . Instead of keeping all unlocked class items, Retirement reset all unlocked class items.
  • Update 30: Going 1.0 added three more Honor Badge: Platinum, Diamond and Legendary.

There are four types of miners that can be promoted in  Deep Rock Galactic and each one has their own requirements. Players will need to level up the character they want to promote before unlocking and completing their promotion assignment. Promotion assignments are comprised of four missions that players will need to complete to unlock the promotion option for the Engineer, Gunner, Driller, or Scout in  Deep Rock Galactic .

In order to level up any of the four characters, players will need to complete missions such as a salvage operation in  Deep Rock Galactic . Players will need to reach level 25 with their character to unlock the promotion assignment and begin completing tasks for them. At the start of the game, players will choose their class, then work on leveling them up by completing missions. Promotions allow players to continue gaining experience for their character after reaching the maximum level in  Deep Rock Galactic .

Along with leveling up their character, players will need to earn a lot of credits and use crafting materials to complete a promotion. There are multiple promotions that players can unlock in  Deep Rock Galactic , and the credit fee ranges from about 9,000 for the first promotion to 40,000 for the later promotions. Players earn Honor Badges for each promotion, which are new frames for their character that start at bronze and get to legendary. Each level has one, two, and three stars, so players can earn a total of 18 Honor Badges from promotions in  Deep Rock Galactic .

Unlocking Character Promotions in Deep Rock Galactic

To gain the ability to promote a character class in Deep Rock Galactic , players will need to level them up to 25. The quickest ways to gain experience are to increase the threat level, complete missions with the Double XP anomaly, and extract a large number of resources per mission. Players will also gain additional experience for taking part in events and killing as many enemies as possible during each mission. Once players have reached level 25, they can begin the promotion process.

  • Mining Expedition
  • Salvage Operation
  • On-site Refining

Gunner Promotion Assignment

  • Escort Duty

Diller Promotion Assignment

  • On-site Refining
  • Point Extraction

Scout Promotion Assignment

Promotion assignments can be completed alone or while playing with others. Many of the missions for promotion assignments, like  Deep Rock Galactic 's On-site Refining , overlap between character classes, so players can complete them quicker while playing together. Once the promotion assignment is finished, players can go to the character selection screen and select the promote option.

For the first promotion, players will receive an additional active perk slot, new assignments, the permanent ability to activate machine events, and access to Deep Dives and the Forge. Players also get new Honor Badges for each promotion and the ability to continue leveling their character.  Deep Rock Galactic allows players to promote their character using a prestige system that has different missions to complete and multiple rewards.

Need to know how to promote your character in Deep Rock Galactic? There’s nothing like showing off your progress and good work like getting a promotion. But how do you do it?

Deep Rock Galactic is full of missions and mining to enjoy in the dark caves of Hoxxes IV. Whether you’re going in solo or with a team, it’s tons of fun. And, with the Special Edition release date coming up, it’s never a better time to grind. Once you’ve done work, you’re able to be promoted. We’re here to show you how to do it.

How to get a promotion in Deep Rock Galactic

To get promoted in Deep Rock Galactic, you have to first reach level 25 for your class. If you haven’t done this yet, play more missions and finish assignments to get to the necessary level. You won’t be able to be promoted if you aren’t level 25, so don’t waste your time looking for the promotion assignment.

Once you’ve successfully gotten to level 25, head over to the Assignment Board and you’ll see the Promotion Qualification assignment for whatever class you’ve reached level 25 in. These assignments are a specific set of high-risk and high-payout missions. They’re different for each class. Here are the mission types for each class:

  • Mining Expedition
  • Salvage Operation
  • On-site Refining
  • Escort Duty
  • Point Extraction

Once you’ve completed the assignment for your respective class, it’s time to head to the terminal and get that sweet promotion. Luckily, I found that for my first promotion, these assignments didn’t take too long. They were well worth the time. If you have a specific class you want to promote, try to get used to the mission types before the promotion. It makes it easier to complete the assignment.

Where to find the Promotion Terminal in Deep Rock Galactic

Once you’re at level 25, and completed the Promotion assignment, head to the Memorial Hall. Behind the big statue and up the ramp is the Promotion Terminal. Go here, and you’ll be able to be promoted.

A screenshot of Deep Rock Galactic, a game featuring Memorial Hall to promote their character.

Unfortunately, being promoted means you do have to pay a fee. However, this is well worth it for the rewards you’ll get.

Never turn it down

You should always promote yourself when you can. While you do have to pay a fee, it’s small and well worth the rewards you get for it. Plus, you get to show off to everyone you play with as promotions are the prestige levels in the game.

What do you get for getting promoted in Deep Rock Galactic?

As a reward for promotion, you’ll receive the Honor Badge . This is a bronze border around your profile with a star at the top. For your first promotion, you’ll unlock the border. Future promotions will add stars to the border and change it from bronze to other colors. You’ll also receive three rewards to claim, which will be useful for the endgame.

Getting promoted will reset your level to one, as well. This will allow you to continue leveling up and earning rewards for it. You’ll also gain access to the Deep Dives endgame activity, and The Forge terminal.

That’s everything you need to know about how to promote your dwarf in Deep Rock Galactic. If you’re looking for more info, check out our Season 5 release window for all the news on the next season of the game.

How to promote FAQ

How do I promote my character?

You need to first reach level 25 in any class. Once you’ve done so, you’ll unlock the Promotion Assignment. Complete the assignment. Head to the Promotion Terminal to pay a small fee and get promoted.

Where is the Promotional Terminal?

The Promotional Terminal is located at the back of the Memorial Hall. Head to the back of the statue in the center of the room and up the ramp to find it.

Should I promote my character?

Yes, you should always promote your character when you can. It unlocks tons of rewards and loot.

URGENT COMPANY BRIEFING [ ]

Update changes [ ], season event: rockpox corruptor [ ].

The Plague Hearts you have encountered previously have evolved. They will now turn into Lithophage Corruptors - ravenous, fully mobile abominations that spread Rockpox wherever they go. They appear impervious to normal gunfire, so you will need to use the Cleansing Equipment to get through their exterior shells and expose their soft, inner core.

New Rockpox Enemies [ ]

Rockpox breeder [ ].

A result of increased Rockpox infection of airborne fauna. The infection has changed the internal workings of its host to allow for Rockpox Larvae to sprout and thrive within its body.

Rockpox Bomber [ ]

As if the Goo Bomber wasn't bad enough already: The lithophage has spread to the volatile excretion this critter is so loved for, expanding the reach of the disease at a high rate.

Rockpox Spitter [ ]

The Rockpox Acid Spitter has turned its already impressive bio-projectiles into a highly infectious Rockpox vector, and with a suppressed pain response and high dose of combat pheromones the Rockpox Spitter poses a far greater threat than before!

Rockpox Exploder [ ]

The Rockpox Exploder has had profound mutations to its body, thickening its skin and reducing its volatility in turn of being filled to the brim with highly contagious Lithophage spores. Being caught in the blast zone will instantly infect any dwarves nearby, so stay clear of them at all costs!

New Enemies [ ]

Glyphid stingtail [ ].

A powerful, heavily armored beast with a grasping tail, capable of pulling in any enemy and goring them against its massive horns. Take care around this one!

Glyphid Septic Spreader [ ]

The malicious cousin of our old friend, the Glyphid Spitter. This one fires heavy globules of rancid biomatter, which spread out in a wide area around impact. Mind your step and try to ignore the smell!

Jet Boots [ ]

You will now be able to recover crates of high powered jet modules in the caves. Attach these to your boots and turn them into fully functional jet boots, giving you a much- needed leg-up during any hardships you may encounter!

Space Rig Addition: Jetty Boot [ ]

Back home, a bit of redundant machinery has been cleared out, opening up the Space Rig a bit more- which handily allows plenty of space to install a training terminal for the coded locks you will encounter on the Jet Boot crates. It would appear some smart- aleck has even seen fit to build an arcade cabinet to fit it into. Bring lots of credits!

New Beer: Randoweisser [ ]

This potent ale reportedly instills a sense of adventure and lust for challenge in whoever drinks it, randomizing all equipment, perks and cosmetics for the duration of a mission. Drink it at your own leisure!

Equipment Terminal : Randomize Loadouts [ ]

At the Loadout Terminal, a new option to randomize all your gear and upgrades has also become available, enabling you to quickly set up challenges for yourself. Why would anyone do this? Well, never let it be said we do not wish to enable our employees!

Community Request: Copy/Paste Loadouts [ ]

Additionally, you can now copy and paste loadouts for a smoother experience when experimenting with new weapon and mod combinations, without the hassle of redoing everything from scratch!

Wardrobe: Sleeveless Armors [ ]

Some of your armors now come with a new option: Toggle between sleeveless versions of most of your owned sets! This does not count for DLC Armors or armors that are already sleeveless.

Weapon Input Buffer [ ]

Thanks to the hard work of the folks at R&D, all semi-automatic weapons now come with fancy input buffering. This will make it easier to consistently maintain a high rate of fire, especially on weapons like the Subata, M1000 and EPC.

Weapon Balance [ ]

  • The Subata has long been in need of an update. As always if you unlocked any of the removed upgrades their cost will be refunded.
