Gurkha Movie Review: A mindless entertainer that predominantly works

I cannot remember the last time a Tamil film protagonist had North Indian lineage. Sam Anton's fourth directorial, Gurkha , tells us that Bahadur Babu (Yogi Babu) is from the bloodline of the Gorkhas. In true Sam Anton style, his ancestry is explained in a sentence when a character calls Bahadur a " North Indiavum North Madrasum sernthu senja kalavaram ." Said to have been inspired from the director's own life, Bahadur's introduction scene as a Gorkha, dancing merrily to Ek Do Teen along with his cousins, is followed by him nabbing a few wrongdoers in his style. This style of humour, which Yogi Babu seems to have made his own, is undoubtedly the biggest asset of Gurkha . While his previous films, including his latest as the lead, Dharma Prabhu , relied predominantly on one-liners, Gurkha also relies on situational comedy.

Before failing a police selection test, Bahadur, who even quotes the director's own 100 as an inspiration, helps his grandmother atop a stool, so he can touch her legs and seek blessings. You see, he can't bend as he has just had a heavy meal. At the test, Bahadur, instead of jumping over the hurdles, picks them up and gives it to a baffled inspector, Haris Jayaraj (Ravi Mariya), because he believes it to be a genuine hazard for the runners. His concern also extends to gymnasts, as he is worried their intestines might fall out. When asked to do push-ups, he lies down and moves his hands up and down as he thinks it to be easier. Such efficient comedy by Yogi Babu is the result at the hands of a competent director.

Bahadur ends up getting a dog named Undertaker instead of an offer letter and joins a security service after its proprietor (Manobala) gets impressed with his 'skills', when he lifts a bubble-top water can. Shortly, he gets transferred to a mall, which gets taken over by a gang of terrorists. The director mentioned in an interview with us that this film is inspired by Paul Blart: Mall Cop , and Die Hard . While the happenings inside the mall bear similarity to the Bruce Willis-starrer, the iconic Segway from Paul Blart is given a homage of sorts when Bahadur uses a portable scooter in the climax.  The film has a lot of nifty touches that make us laugh. In the office of the Chief Minister, a photo of Bijili Ramesh is captioned as the former CM. The My Vellakaari song starts with the words, ' Indha paadalai padiyavar ungal GV Prakash Kumar '. References to other films are also very many — right from Mersal and Vivegam , to even Suryavamsam and Sagaptham . Much like how Sam Anton played with the ' ennama neenga ippadi panreengalema ' line in his first film, Darling , he uses many repetitive references to current affairs in Gurkha . There are the done-to-death Thermocol and god-man jokes too, but there's also a scene involving a politician knocking off a mobile phone. 

The film is full of funny lines, with able use of wordplay. In a scene where a cop tells Harris to abort a mission, he asks, " Yethuku saar mission-ah abortion panreenga? " Even the usual trope of an actor's inability to speak English is efficiently used here for humour: Bahadur calls his love interest, Margaret (Elyssa Erhardt), Market, and when he likes her a bit too much, he calls her Supermarket. The serious sequences involving the terrorist gang's actions are a dampener though, with the stakes never being too high. Actors like Mayilsamy and Charle are also underutilised. Racist slurs are passed off casually. When responsible filmmaking is the need of the hour, such scenes cannot be brushed under the carpet as mere jokes.  These flaws don't kill this film though, whose comedy largely works. This Gurkha and his bag of jokes, save the day.

Gurkha movie review: Partly wacky, partly silly and mostly fun

Gurkha movie review: this no-brainer, starring yogi babu, is certainly bang for your buck..

Gurkha revolves around a series of goofy moments involving Yogi Babu (Bahadur Babu), a security guard and a dog, Undertaker. The film works as long as Undertaker is part of the proceedings. There is a certain cute factor associated with dogs, right? Every time Yogi Babu says “Undertaker” in his inimitable style, I cracked up. Something about that name is hilarious.

The film neither takes itself seriously nor does it expect us to give it any thought as Sam Anton tries to pack in maximum puns per minute. Sample this: Yogi Babu says “I am waiting” like a Kaththi Vijay and also utters the famous “Never give up” from Vivegam like Ajith when stuck in a difficult situation. You have to give Sam Anton points for trying in a time when writers recycle the stalest of jokes. This includes Babu calling a police officer (Ravi Mariya) ‘Harris Jayaraj’, and his girlfriend Margaret, ‘Market’, among more.

Meanwhile, a group of men hijack a famous mall in the city. On one side, we witness Yogi Babu doing ‘hilarious stuff’ and on the other, there’s a life-threatening situation. It is here that the film becomes interesting throwing serious characters into a funny plot. But such a premise is flattened by sloppy writing in an unrealistic manner. Imagine an American ambassador visiting the mall for watching Baahubali 3! The security guard of the mall belongs to the Gorkha community and saves people. In the first half, we get a flashback about Bahadur Babu’s lineage and how his Gorkha grandfather married his Tamil grandmother.

Gurkha is partly a satire which parodies events that happened in Tamil Nadu and Sam Anton ties them up into the main plot. For instance, there are references to the infamous Godman Nithyananda , actor Vishal, politician H Raja, the ‘anti-Indian’ statement, thermocol episode, Sivakumar’s selfie controversy, the Sterilite protest incident where a policeman stood atop a van to open fire, and reviewer ‘Blue Sattai’ Maaran who asks where the story is stolen from. The film begins to slacken around in the second half in these above-mentioned portions as they feel repetitive.

Gurkha is a film that tries to evoke laughs but also laughs at itself, and this is where it scores. However, sometimes, Yogi Babu’s character goes over-the-top and it becomes difficult to take the narrative seriously.

Raj Bharath, who was seen in Sigai, appears totally at ease in the hijacking sequences, as he infuses his character with energy and purpose. I wish I had seen more of his role. But Gurkha keeps the other supporting characters at an arm’s length. Naturally, we stop caring.

Gurkha is Yogi Babu’s third film as the lead actor after Kolamaavu Kokila and the recent Dharma Prabhu. Usually, for other heroes, comedy works best as a flavouring, but for Yogi Babu, it is the main dish. In a largely-aimless film, his expressions keep you engaged. Kids might love quite a bit of Gurkha for Undertaker and the gags of Yogi Babu and Anand Raj. Their scenes guarantee total fun. It’s refreshing to see the audience cheer for content that’s away from the quintessential hero-worshipping. Further, there are a couple of scenes of toilet humour – literally, but unfortunately, they are barely funny.

Overall, Gurkha is a light-hearted film that entertains the audience, despite a lot of misgivings.

Gurkha movie review: Yogi Babu's illogical film is aimed at promoting the comedian as a saleable hero

Gurkha is an out-and-out film meant to promote Yogi Babu as a saleable commercial hero, and he does what is expected out of him without much fanfare.

Over the years, Tamil cinema has been making heroes out of its successful comedians. Comedy is an essential ingredient in Tamil commercial cinema, and those who make it big mint money. And it’s just a matter of time before popular comedians graduate into playing hero as their ‘ego’ starts working.

The latest comedian to join the ‘hero’ slot is Yogi Babu, who had two back-to-back releases —  Dharma Prabhu, which hit screens on 28 June, and Gurkha this week. When comedians turn heroes, it’s almost as if they do it with a vengeance, since all these years they were at the receiving end of being hero’s best friend and the butt of all ridicule. They have a lot to prove because they want the industry to know that they too can be heroes.

The protagonist Bahadur Babu (Yogi Babu) is the grandson of a famous Gurkha, who married a North Madras girl but died rescuing a family from a group of rowdies. However, people refuse to accept Babu as a Gurkha due to his dark looks and a rather peculiar hairstyle. He is rejected by the selection committee at the Police training academy along with a dog named Undertaker. Finally, Babu and the dog join a security agency run by an eccentric man (Manobala) who looks after the security of a mall. There he comes across an old guard (Charlie) who has been neglected by his family.

Meanwhile, Babu meets Margot (Elyssa), a high-ranking official in the US consulate and develops a soft corner for her. He mistakes Margot’s name as Market. Meanwhile, the people who had come for the premiere of Baahubali 3 at the mall’s multiplex are taken hostage by a group of terrorists with international links. They demand a ransom of Rs 20 crores to release the hostages, that include family members of politicians as well as policemen.

Post interval, the focus shifts to Babu, the dog Undertaker and Charlie, as they try to thwart the terrorists’ attempts to kill the detainees. Some scenes may make one feel like the film is a spoof of  Die Hard series, especially the cat-and-mouse chase played out between Babu and the terrorists over the walkie talkie. This is arguably the most enjoyable part of the film where Yogi Babu plays to the galleries with his one-liners and takes on Tamil Nadu’s one-man political parties, police, and a notorious godman.

Gurkha  is an out-and-out film meant to promote Yogi Babu as a saleable commercial hero, and he does what is expected out of him without much fanfare. The supporting cast is present to provide more gags and laughter if required. As expected, there are far too many logical loopholes, which are left unanswered. How can Yogi Babu walk around freely inside a mall where the security cameras have been taken over by the terrorists? But director Sam Anton makes it clear from the get-go. The title card reads – “ Gurkha is no brainer,” which essentially means one should not ask logical questions.

Produced by Sam Anton and his friends' new banner - 4 Monkeys Studios, Gurkha is directed by Sam Anton himself and stars Yogi Babu, Elyssa Erhadt and a Labrador dog in the lead with a huge support cast. Ruben has handled the editing and Raj Aryan has composed the music, while Krishnan Vasant is in charge of the cinematography. 

Bahadur Babu (Yogi Babu), is a disgruntled member of the Gurkha Community, who aspires to become a Policeman. Despite repeated attempts, he fails to qualify and in his latest attempt, gets snubbed by Inspector Harris Jayaraj (Ravi Mariya). At the same time, Harris also gets disillusioned with and abandons Undertaker (a Labrador dog), on which he had high hopes. Bahadur and Undertaker form an unlikely bond and in the meantime, Bahadur gets a job with a security agency and falls in love with Margaret (Elyssa Erhadt), an American Ambassador to India. A heavily armed gang lead by Thiagu (Raj Bharath) to take over a Mall and hold a group of people, including Margaret captive and they are held for ransom. Unknown to the gang, Undertaker, Bahadur and his friend Usain Bolt (Charle) are still inside the Mall. Meanwhile, the Police are unable to take any action as all the people being held captive, are family members of Policemen. Watch what happens next, in Gurkha...

Director Sam Anton has made a bold and innovative attempt at bringing a novel idea to Kollywood through Gurkha. We have had both heist stories and hostage stories but marrying both the concepts and bringing it to the people with a huge dosage of comedy, is something new! However, this movie seems like it has tried to bring in a lot of concepts and tried a bit too hard. Yogi Babu is his usual self with counters for every dialogue spoken to him and self damaging dialogues as well as weird name calling. However, not all the punches in this movie make you laugh. The first half takes its own sweet time to take off but fails to do so. The second half is far racier than the first and moves at a better pace. 

Elyssa Erhadt doesn't have much to do and is good in the little screen space she has. The dog has performed very well and its trainer should be commended. Veterans Charle, Manobala, Aadukalam Naren, Namo Narayanan, Mayilsamy, Anandaraj and Ravi Maria provide some laughs. However, all of them seem to overact at some time or the other. The director using imaginary sequences to convey Bahadur's mindset and thought process, is commendable. Yogi Babu's constant attempts to imitate  Ajith  and  Vijay  and some repetitive usage of names, could begin to get a little irritating to some people. Raj Bharath as the villain, is very good and maintains the same intensity throughout. Sam Anton seems to have used this movie as his vehicle to put across his views on quite a few incidents like veteran actor Sivakumar slapping away the phone of a fan trying to click a selfie, Nithyananda, TV channels and so on but not all of these generate the expected laughs. 

There is a lag in the screenplay in the first half but the second half seems far better. Overall, quite a bit of the movie could have been trimmed. The background music is ok, while there isn't much to say about the song in the movie. Cinematography is very good and the visuals make for pleasant viewing.

Verdict: A fun family entertainer that could have been better!

GURKHA MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Sam Anton's Gurkha, starring Yogi Babu as the lead, deals with the story of how Babu (Yogi Babu) saves the hostages inside a mall captured by terrorists. Yogi Babu plays the lead as a Gurkha in the film, and it begins with a narration of how Gurkhas came to Tamil Nadu and the difficulties they face, such as racism. The film does more to make us sympathize with them than empathize, i.e., it makes you pity them, but you don't feel their pain.

Barring the narration at the start, the film keeps trolling every single character or profession that appears in the film. A Gurkha, a watchman, a media person, a politician, a police officer, even the US Ambassador is not spared. You have characters like Blue Sattai Maran, Nithyananda, H Raja, whose names are changed on purpose, but what is the purpose, when none of them add anything to the plot. These gags have become highly predictable to the extent that we can sense the joke coming.

The villain, played by Raj Bharath, hijacks a theatre in the mall and threatens to kill the hostages if the government doesn't meet his financial demands. He is a dangerous terrorist according to the police records, but all he does is just threatening the police officers outside the mall, in order to transfer money to a specific bank account. The motive behind that is also not clear, because of which we don't invest in the film. The rest of the story is whether Yogi Babu, who accidentally gets stuck inside the mall with Charlie and his dog, save the hostages or not.

While it is not logical (since the disclaimer asks us not to expect in the credits) to expect much logic in a mindless comedy entertainer, the film takes this for granted. Sample this: A person does not die when he's shot because he has a Nokia 6610 that takes the bullet for him. There are many more scenes like the above-mentioned one, that lacks any thought. Even Yogi Babu's jokes fall flat at various places because it's all about the appearances of a person and not anything funny.

Elyssa Erhardt is seen playing the role of a US Ambassador, who doesn't have security around her as and when the film wishes. For instance, Yogi Babu barges into her house while chasing a small kid, and there is no guard. As he watches her getting out of the swimming pool, the guards arrive. We are not able to buy the fact that she doesn't react when she sees a stranger inside her house, without a tinge of remorse.

A few dialogues make you cringe so much. A film that speaks about the people who protect us (includes Army, Watchmen, and Gurkhas) doesn't bother to care about them as it intends to do. For the sake of a gag, a fellow Gurkha tells Babu: "We are Gurkhas. We have to stay strong even if our wives run away with someone else." In another scene, an ex-army officer says "If I had died during service, people would have shared my photo on Facebook in the name of respect, which is better than getting treated like this in a police station." Which side is the director on? The sole saving grace is a meagre 10-15 minute portion in the second half where Yogi Babu runs riot.

Gurkha Tamil Movie Review

Gurkha - An interesting idea diluted by silly jokes!

Director Sam Anton certainly has a strong penchant for parody. This had come through in his earlier works. In Gurkha too he succumbs to this temptation of spoofing popular dialogues and famous personalities. The problem is that the crux of Gurkha isn't a parody but a whacky idea of how a not so intelligent guy who is the butt of jokes manages to pull off a rescue mission. So there is a certain disappointment too see that instead of creating jokes out of the situation you are mostly bombarded with references in the name of comedy.

Gurkha begins on an insipid note and the initial parts are anything but funny. Not sure how many find someone reading a book upside down or saying Gandhi is the father of VTV Ganeshan remotely funny. But these are exactly the kind of scenes that occupy the screen in the initial portions of Gurkha. And you have Ravi Maria hamming it up in these portions. You understand that he has a peculiar way of making you laugh and to be honest he is a distinct personality on screen. But directors either need to rein in his performance or judiciously use him on screen.

The movie becomes much better when it moves on to the hostage crisis scenario. The jokes are relatively better and there is a sense of direction as to where things are heading to. Yogi Babu doesn't actually do much (in the sense that he is sort of relaxed ) but he is a likable personality on screen. But with actors like him and Charlie on screen, the film should have been way more funnier. There are a couple of laugh out loud scenes. One involves the diffusing of a bomb and the other where a character ( a parody of a youtube movie reviewer) remains stonefaced even as people all around are laughing under the influence of laughing gas. I also particularly enjoyed how Sam Anton knows the limitations of his movie and is not scared to have jokes pointing at himself at times. The post credit scene that has a review of this film itself should give an idea of the kind of easy going guy that the director probably is. I also liked how the film made an effort to showcase the 'gurkhas' in good light. However small it is, it is always heartening to see films that make an effort to showcase everyone in good light and refrain from linguistic jingoism.

Bottomline :

Gurkha has a perfect premise for a comedy and does have few scenes that light you up. But for the most part it wavers cluelessly as an assortment of silly jokes and lazy references.

Gurkha is an Indian Tamil comedy drama thriller film written and directed by Sam Anton. The film stars Yogi Babu, Elyssa Erhadt and a dog in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Sam Anton himself with his production banner 4 Monkeys Studios, with cinematography and editing is handled by Krishnan Vasant and Ruben respectively, continuing their association with the director. Music is composed by Raj Aryan of Ra fame. Principal photography commenced in around December 2018.

It is an unofficial remake of the 2009 American comedy film Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Bahadur Babu (Yogi Babu) belonged to a family of Gurkha who initially had the intention to become a cop, but unfortunately, he gets rejected as he is branded unfit and is unable to clear the physical fitness tests. He joins a security agency known as Shakthimaan Security Services owned by Kavariman (Manobala). Later in the movie, he gets posted as a security officer in a mall. The other characters who have a parallel story line in the movie are a gang of ex-servicemen headed by Thyagu (Raj Bharath) who on the sidelines plan an elaborate antisocial scheme and ultimately stage a take over of the mall where our lead character works in. Based on the scheme the people who are lured into visiting the movies under the false pretence of getting free tickets and shopping vouchers, including Bahadur Babu's love interest Margaret (Elyssa Erhardt), are held as hostages. In the end, it is up to Bahadur Babu to save the people and become a real hero.

1. Vasuki Bhaskar

Vasuki Bhaskar is a popular actress and fashion designer who has appeared in various character roles in Tamil films, Tamil television serials, and ad commercials and has worked as fashion and costume designer in many Tamil reality shows, television serials and films. Born on September 18 in Chennai, Tamilnadu, Vasuki belongs from an elite and eminent family which is associated with the Tamil entertainment industry for years now. She is the daughter of famous Tamil film personality Shri R.D.Bhaskar. Her uncle is the legendary composer Illayaraja. She completed her studies from the Loyola College, Chennai, Tamilnadu. During her college days, she was offered by a leading producer who was also a good friend of her father to design costumes for one of his upcoming productions Kangalal Kaidhu Sei to which she happily agreed. This was the stepping stone for Vasuki and after her first venture she held independent exhibitions and fashion shows where she displayed and showcased her collections. Then she went on to act as a fashion designer in many hit and successful Tamil films and also appeared in small roles in few films also. She made her debut in the world of Tamil television with reality shows where she also happened to be the fashion and costume designer. Those shows were-Jodi Number One in Vijay TV for their season 1 & 2 and yet again Vijay TV’s Girls v/s boys.  Presently Vasuki owns her own boutique and fashion line and is known in the industry as the makeover master and she also co owns their production house Pavalar creations. She has also worked in some popular ad commercials like-Prince Jewelry, Nalli – an apparel line.

2. Devadarshini Chetan

Devadarshini is a Tamil TV serial actor who first made her debut in the year 1998 and is now married to fellow serial actor Chetan with whom she has an 11-year-old daughter, Niyati. She has played several supporting roles in more than 50 films and has appeared in around 20 TV serials. She got her first break through the series ‘Marmadesam’ where she acted along with Chetan. She has also played several pivotal roles in cult serials like Annamalai, Kolangal, Athi Pookkal, Poovilangu among many others. She is widely known for her comedy and sentimental roles in several movies in the first decade of the 21st century.

3. Sam Anton

Sam Anton is a Tamil director who is currently making his presence felt in the Kollywood industry. His first film was showered with accolades and compliments from the audience and soared its way into being a commercial success. He is currently working on his next project which is slated to be released in June 2017. Born on January 1, 1982, the young director became a thorough professional in the field with the release of his first movie named Darling. Geetha Arts and Studio Green were the producing banners, and when it was unveiled on the theaters during early 2015, it made a long-lasting impact in the Kollywood industry.

4. Yogi Babu

Yogi Babu is one of the famous actors in Indian films. His appearance is there in only Tamil movies. At present, he is a regular comedy actor in Tamil films. Babu was born in Chennai, Tamilnadu. His acting career started from 2009 onwards. He was famous for his outstanding movie called Maan Karate (2014); a fantasy oriented Tamil film under the direction of Thirukumaran. There are some prominent stars in this movie namely Sathish, Vamsi Krishna, Soori, Hansika Motwani and Sivakarthikeyan. Famous writer Murugadoss wrote the entire script for this movie and went on to screens under the production of Escape Artists Motion Pictures. Anirudh Ravichander gave an outstanding music for this movie. Mr. Babu was also notable for his famous film Yaamirukka Bayamey (2014), a comedy horror movie under the direction of debutant Deekay. It was under the production of Elred Kumar with casting by Anaswara Kumar, Oviya, Kreshna and Rupa Manjari.

5. Raj Aryan

Raj Aryan is an Indian-Music Director. Along with being a music director in the industry, he also an actor and a lyricist. Earlier he used to work in the Tamil Film Industry but now he is also working in the Hindi Film Industry. Some of his hit movies are named as Ishq Junoon, and Ra.

6. Arunraja Kamaraj

Arunraja Kamaraj known as a singer, actor, and director was born in Peru, near Kulithalia town in Tamil Nadu. He did his schooling from Government Boys Higher Secondary School and Higher Secondary schooling from Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School.

7. Vignesh Shivan

People say that everybody is talented, but most of the people never actually open up their package. But what if a person does not limit himself in one package? What if he has many packages to offer? Yes, you all heard that right. Vignesh Shivan is a very young lad to achieve such huge milestones that most of could have only dreamt about. Shivan is a film director, -but the list of his talent is endless. He is a versatile actor, songwriter, a music composer,and a scriptwriter as well. I know it is very hard to believe, but this multi-talented kid has taken it all, beginning with the love from his audition to an unquestionable pool of talent.

8. G V Prakash Kumar

In Indian cinema, there are very few singers and music composers who made their mark in acting too. By having the talent of music along with acting skills, one can get a great chance in the film industry like G.V. Prakash Kumar.

G. V. Prakash Kumar is the new Kollywood singer who, after earning a good name in the music industry, made his acting debut with Pencil opposite Sri Divya, but the project got delayed. His next film Darling got released earlier. Darling was a remake of Telugu film Prema Katha Chitram, which became popular. His third film is going to be in Telugu and Tamil. Telugu film titled Trisha Ledha Nayanthara and Tamil titled Trisha Illana Nayanthara will be released in September 17, 2015. The actor has signed two new films Bruce Lee and Sam Anton, which is getting ready for its shooting.

As a music composer, he already made a huge impact in Tamil Cinema. He was a vocalist on the soundtrack for A R Rahman’s score in Gentleman. Prakash made a contribution to Rahman’s numerous projects. He worked with Harris Jayaraj and sang two popular songs in Anniyan and Unnale Unnale, but he got the break as a full-fledged composer in Tamil film Veyil. His score in Madrasapattinam was appreciated by the masses; especially he cast a spell for his number in the song” "Pookal Pookum Tharunam". The composer made even Dhanush to sing for a song” Voda Voda Voda” and even recorded some songs with his wife Saindhavi.

A young brain deeply rooted in Indian music, his talent needs no mention, but when a singer, composer makes a mark in acting as a hero, it is indeed a milestone in the cine world. Very few had achieved this status, one being legendary playback singer Kishore Kumar. G. V. Prakash Kumar is married to Saindhavi, who is also a playback singer.

9. Sathish Krishnan

Sathish Krishnan has worked in the Tamil Industry and is an Indian Choreographer and actor. He is the instructor of Flyerz dance company for more than 10 years and is also seen in many Television serials like Aattam Paatam and Dance Machi Dance, Maanada Mayilada (won the title on Best Dancer), Jodi Number One Season Four and many such shows.

10. Suresh Chandra

Suresh Chandra is a renowned Public Relations Officer, working primarily in the Tamil film industry and for some movies in the Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada film industry. He celebrates his birthday on 10 May. He is credited as the P.R.O. for a whopping 190 movies. He is the publicist of famed actor Ajith Kumar. Suresh started his career as a P.R.O. in the Ajith Kumar starrer, Mankatha (2011). This Tamil action thriller follows the story of a suspended cop who gets caught up in a gangster’s world. Directed and written by VenkatPrabhu, this movie garnered positive reviews and got nominated for several awards.

11. Aadukalam Naren

Aadukalam Naren was born in Chennai the heartland of Tamil cinema, in a family which took keen interest in movies. He was interested in acting and was also encouraged by his family members, and so he decided to go through formal training before he could enter the industry.

Charle was born in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu, India and his real name was Manohar Velmurugan Thangasamy. He is an Indian actor who has worked in almost 600 Tamil movies. Charle finished his graduation in chemistry from G. V. N. College situated in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu. From his college days, he had the habit to mimic and imitate the Tamil actors like Sivaji, Nagesh. He was a stage artist and a complete entertainer from his college times. He first worked as a Staff Artist actor in the song and drama division of the Information and Broadcasting ministry and performed in around 10000 dramas. 13. Livingston

Livingston is a noteworthy supporting actor and comedian of Tamil cinema. His work as a solo lead in the flick Sollamale, where he played the role of a low confident lover, got him much acclaim. Apart from acting, Livingston has also tried his luck in penning scripts. During his early stages of his career his screen name was Ranjan. 

Livingston is active in the industry since 1988. Sundara Purushan, Kanni Rasi, Engalukkum Kaalam Varum and Sollamale are the works for which he is known for lead roles. He penned screenplay for Kaaki Sattai and Kanni Rasi by joining hands with G M Kumar of Avan Ivan fame. The flick Thandachoru introduced him as a music composer (he had aspired for it for a long time) and director. This movie is yet to be released. The 1988 flick  Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran  is the first film in which he got a starring role. Initially Livingston was into singing by perfoming star shows. He also had the aspiration of becoming an actor. Right from his childhood days Livingston was a huge fan of MGR. He worked in several shows before venturing into acting. Eventually he sang a number for the flick Moonram Powrnami and Athey Manithan. Sundara Purushan, Poomagal Oorvalam and Sollamale are the successful films of Livingston as a hero. He is in the industry for many years through his sheer patience. 

The comedy of Livingston has an innocence in it. Initially Livingston was working in roles with gray shades, and supporting roles. Then only he got prominent roles. He was a fan of K Bhagyaraj’s flicks and hung around his home for almost a year. Oru Veedu Iru Vaasal and En Uyir Thozhan are landmarks in this talented actor’s career. On the personal front Livingston is married to Jacintha and is blessed with two children.
