Cultural And Natural Heritage Compliments Of Ilam

essay about ilam in nepali language

Located in the northeast hills of Nepal, the hill town of Ilam bears historical importance. Ilam was the headquarters of one of the ten principalities of Limbuwan. Limbuwan-Gorkha War was a progression of battles between the King of Gorkha and the Chieftains of different realms of Limbuwan from 1771 to 1774 AD.

The conflict reached a conclusion in 1774 AD with the truce settlement known as the "deal of Salt and Water” based on the principle of co-existence between Yakthung LajeLimbuwan kings and the Gorkha ruler. It perceived concurrence of government situation and equivalent rights between Gorkha King and Yakthung LajeLimbuwan Kings. Ilam was the last among the ten principalities of Limbuwan to be included in unified Nepal.

The administrative status of the medieval settlement of Ilam was elevated as Gauda, meaning administrative center, in the year 1818 AD. The bi-centenary (1818-2018) of the Ilam Bazar was observed with much fanfare in the year 2018 AD.

Ilam Bazar is the core area, the Ilam Municipality is spread over human settlements of Godak, Soyak, Barbote, Maipokhari, Sumbek, Puwamajhuwa, Sangrumba, Siddhithumka and Sakhejung. The settlements represent a rare combination of ethnic and bio-diversity and tea estates having panoramic views. The tea estate in the Ilam Bazar is one of the oldest tea estates of South Asia that came into operation after Col Gajraj Thapa planted the tea sapling that was received as a gift from the Government of China in the year 1873 AD.

Col Gajraj Singh Thapa, who was the Governor-General of the East of Nepal, initiated the implementation of two plantations: the Ilam and Soktim Tea Estate of 52 hectares each and thus began the Nepali tea industry. The first Nepali tea production was an Orthodox tea of the hills. The Ilam orthodox tea with aromatic flavor is one of the best tea in the world. Roasting of tea leaves in machines began in Nepal after the establishment of a tea factory in the year 1878 AD in Ilam. However, the local tradition of making handmade artisan organic long green tea is still in practice. The tea estate adjoining to the human settlement with commercial markets on the ridges and slopes are the most interesting and value-adding factors in the different wards of Ilam Municipality. Anyone who loves to travel in hills will certainly be thrilled to taste the aroma of orthodox tea amidst the panorama of Ilam.

Ilam is home to various ethnic groups like Limbu, Rai, Lepcha, Gurung, Magar, Newa, Khas, Arya, etc. Cultural variety can be seen in Ilam in festivities with mind-blowing music and colorful costumes. Lepchas and Limbus, the native people of Ilam, have unique personalities in their cultural life. Various celebrations of the clans that fall in different seasons are observed eagerly. The extraordinary enthusiasm of the indigenous people is noticeable in their traditional style of singing and dancing.

Culturally rich Ilam has numerous feathers of bio-variety in its hat. Mai Pokhari is a wetland in Ilam that was listed in the Ramsar sites on 28 October 2008. The lake inside the wetland which reflects emerald waters has a boundary of around 1 kilometer (0.62 mi). On the fringe of the lake, there is the Maipokhari Botanical Garden of agricultural and natural significance which houses a stone nursery, an orchid house, plants gathered from numerous locales of eastern Nepal, and a greenhouse.

The wetland is in the center slope scopes of the Himalayas at a height of around 2,100 m (6,900 ft) and covers a space of 90 hectares. It is around 15 km toward the north of Ilam. The wetland has been created to preserve the ground subsidence. The wellspring of water in the wetland is from common springs and precipitation, which the principal source of water supply for neighborhood people.

The experts have identified varieties of specimens in the flora and fauna of the wetland. The wetland's flora consists of Schima, Castanopsis, laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia) and epiphytic orchids. Water Lilly, cone trees, rhododendrons, and herbal plants are noticeable in the area.

Faunal species incorporate white-rumped vulture, panther feline (Prionailurus bengalensis), Eurasian otter (Lutra), and endemic Variegated mountain reptile (Japaluravariegata). The attack of goldfish (Carassius auratus) has unfavorably influenced the native fauna. There are likewise 300 types of birds recorded in the wetland.

On the economic front, the fertile slopes of Ilam have been boon for the people who live here. Besides the Orthodox tea, cash crops like ginger, cardamom, akbare chilly, broom grass and potato are reliable sources of income for the people. Ilam is also famous for milk and milk products. Last but not the least, tourism is another notable source of income in Ilam.

Now, the time has come to initiate interaction between locals and the experts in order to list out the potentialities to include Ilam in the World Heritage Sites. In all accounts, Ilam, where the cultural and natural heritage incredibly each other deserves to be enlisted in the World heritage sites.

Ilam was established in 1818 (1875 BS) as the headquarters of Ilam Gauda and was proclaimed as "Ilam Municipality" in 1958 but only gazetted as "Nepal Rajpatra" in 1962.

Ilam Nagar Panchayat was the municipality's name during Nepal's Panchayat Scheme (which started in 1960).

Ilam reclaimed its official title of Ilam Municipality in 1990, after the demise of the Panchayat System. The township covered a total area of 30.91 square kilometres (11.93 square miles), was split into nine wards, and had a population of 34,648 people in 2007.

Later in 2015,  Godak ,  Barbote ,  Soyak , of  Maipokhari Sumbek ,  Sakhejung Village Development ,  Puwamajhuwa  of  Sangrumba  and part of  Siddhithumka  were incorporated into Ilam district after the amendment of the new Constitution of Nepal.

The Ilam tea factory was established in 1868, and tea plantations spanned over 135 acres. The tea factory was privatized in 2010 and is no longer in operation. Ilam, on the other hand, continues to manufacture tea in different ways. This offers jobs to a significant number of people in the city.

In 2010, Nepal's overall tea production was 16.23 million kilograms per year, with Ilam supplying its bulk. The herbal tea transports the international nation as well.

Economy of Ilam District

In Ilam, new hotels are being built to cater to visitors. Ilam is best known for its six "A"s, which are:

  • Alu  (potato)
  • Alainchi  (cardamom)
  • Alan  (milk)
  • Akabare Khursani  (round chillies)
  • Amliso  (broom grass)
  • Aduwa  (ginger)

Tea, flowers, bamboo, and silk are also a significant part of the people's economy in Ilam. Agricultural commodities contribute to the growth of the agricultural GDP. Aside from these, the tourism industry plays a role in Ilam's economy.

In the same year, the district set aside 38 ropanis (over 19,000 square meters) of land to recycle biodegradable waste.

Furthermore, Ilam's micro hydropower network provides more consistent electricity than the rest of Nepal.

Ropai Jatra – Sinajya Jatra – Chopai Jatra

The “Ropai Jatra”, also known as “Sina Jya Jatra” of the Nepal Bhasa or Newari community, and the “Chopai Jatra” of the Midwest and Far West of Nepal especially around Jumla is being celebrated all over the country today. Especially celebrated by the Newa: community, Ropai Jatra has nowadays become a celebration for everyone in different parts of the country. Ropai Jatra is known as “Sina Jya Jatra” in Nepal Bhasa. The celebration procession of this Jatra starts on the day of Bhadra Krishna Pakchya Dwitiya Tithi (date) every year and lasts for a week. The tradition remains of finalizing it on the day of Krishna Janmashtami . I n many places, it is customary to celebrate Ropai Jatra on the day after Gaijatra , i.e. today.

It is said that Ropai Jatra was started by Gajraj Singh Thapa , the then Governor of Ilam and also the Colonel of Nepal Army during the Rana regime in the year 1972 B.S. He is also known as the founder of the Nepali tea industry. Under the leadership of Nepal bhasa society and other cultural societies, this jatra/procession is celebrated in different parts of the country on different days in their own way.

Ropai Jatra is an important cultural festival celebrated by Nepali society in this agriculture-dominated country. This celebration is also known as the Farmers’ Celebration. The atmosphere on the day of this procession is made colorful by the glimpses of different ethnic cultures of Nepal. On the occasion of this procession, there is a tradition of singing songs from house to house similar to the Deusi-Bhailo tradition of the Yama Panchak-Tihar festival in the city markets including various folk music as well.

With a belief that this celebration will bring a good harvest, this Jatra is celebrated across the country in recent times. The recently dead family members are also commemorated this day. The main attraction of this procession is the humorous and satirical programs showing the plantation mimicry done by Asar plantation field workers as Hali (a person using bulls and halo to plow the field), Bause (the job of men to even the field using Kodali, a kind of spade), Ropahar (paddy planters), etc. In this procession, men can be seen planting paddy in women’s clothing.  Similarly, in the rhythm of the original instrument of Nepal, the Panchai Baja, the Bause and the Ropahars perform the mimicry of paddy plantation during this festivals’ celebration.

This jatra or procession which started from Newa: culture is celebrated in happiness when paddy plantation concludes. During the procession of this festival, the farmers gather, dance, and sing Asare Songs in the beat of musical instruments. There is a popular belief that this procession will help to make everyone’s life easier as this day is used to express the worries, dissatisfaction, and pains of daily life in the form of laughter and jokes.

This festival celebrated all over the country to forget the fatigue and stress of paddy plantation, is celebrated in different places in different ways and with different names. Ropai Jatra is also known as “Chopai Jatra” towards Karnali. In the local language, there “chopai” means “to dip” or “immerse”. In many places, it is a belief that the owner of a paddy field should be dipped/immersed in the mud today inside his field, hence the name Chopai Jatra. Around Karnali, it can be seen that Chopai Jatra is not just a Jatra or procession but also a tradition.

Chopai is also popularly celebrated as a celebration where the newlywed bride and groom are given a tour of the main field during the first year of plantation. During the paddy plantation in the central and far west of Nepal, it is customary to keep a Julungo or Putali/Pulti (scarecrow) in the field. This scarecrow known as pulti is called “Kotha”, “Poko” or “Bhakari” in different places. Also called “Khya-cha” in Newari, Pulti is of great importance during the Ropai Jatra in those places. In particular, it is customary for the daughters to make the pulti in the field. In Jumla, the newlyweds or the newborn baby are given a circumambulation of the pulti after placing it in the planting field.

After the circumambulation, they are sent out of the field with a Tika (small round mark on the forehead, normally red) and Dubo/dubo ko mala (dhurba or bermudagrass or its garland). And, the pulti keeper takes a handful of paddy seedlings in both of her hands and dances around the puppet/pulti in the beat of Nagada (a kind of a drum), inviting the father of the newly-married groom or the father of the newborn baby for the Ropai/chopai.  During the Chopai invitation, the Asare song is sung. After the invitation, young men of the village immerse or dip the father of the groom or father of the newborn in the mud. In this way, Ropai Jatra is celebrated in different places including all the western districts of Nepal, but the way of celebrating is found to be somewhat different.

During the Ropai Jatra, on the day of Bhadra Krishna Tritiya, a man in the guise of a woman imitates distributing food to the farmers, and horsemen participate in it adding liveliness to the procession around Pashupatinath development areas such as Jay Bageshowri, and Til Ganga.  All these activities give a glimpse of traditional agricultural life in the country. Similarly, various communities around the stupa of Baudhanath also celebrate this procession in memory of their deceased.

As a symbol of unity in diversity, there are many festivals and processions of different communities living in Nepal. Nepal certainly is a very rich country in terms of culture and it is the need of this hour to preserve and respect every community and its festivals. It is necessary to promote our innumerable festivals that exist for future generations by preserving each other’s festivals, way of life, language, costumes, etc.

On the occasion of Ropai Jatra/Chopai Jatra or SinaJya Jatra, best wishes from the Nepali Patro to all our readers and all Nepali.  To read this article in the Nepali Language please click here.
