How to Write an Aviation Cover Letter

It probably won’t apply to all jobs in the industry, but it’s a good way to distinguish yourself from the pack..

So far in this series, we have covered how to write an aviation resume and how to apply for a pilot job online . There is a third career media skill that is important to know, though it won’t apply to all positions, and that is how to write a cover letter. 

The cover letter may seem like a bit of an anachronism, and in some ways it is. Few large airlines ask for one anymore; you may have noticed that the AirlineApps base application doesn’t even allow you to attach a cover letter (or a resume, for that matter). At large airlines doing a great deal of hiring, the process is quite data-driven, and the computer that spits out your name to be interviewed by a human will have zero appreciation of a well-crafted cover letter. Still, even at these companies you will bring your resume to the interview, and this should be accompanied by a cover letter—even if it seems destined to languish, unread, in the interviewer’s file folder. 

The cover letter assumes much greater importance for corporate jobs, at smaller companies, whenever mailing or emailing your resume unbidden, when pounding the street and “cold-calling” potential employers, and when meeting recruiters at job fairs. Your cover letter accompanies and enhances your resume by fleshing out a potential employer’s idea of you. It’s more important in the early stages of your career, when your credentials alone aren’t so impressive. By presenting a neat, well-organized, well-written cover letter, you are introducing yourself as a neat, well-organized, and intelligent candidate—a future employee more valuable than your certificates and hours alone might indicate. 

Not a Writer?

The challenge here is that there are plenty of people who are neat, well-organized, and intelligent who are not naturally good writers. If this describes you, I highly suggest that you enlist the help of more literate friends or family members, even to the point of having someone ghost write your basic cover letter. If you don’t know such a person, hire one online (starving writers are a dime a dozen), and get them to proof your resume while you’re at it. Readability is everything; an overly wordy, confusing, or typo-riddled cover letter will quickly be cast aside.

What Goes in a Cover Letter?

Your cover letter should take the form of a one-page business letter; an example is above with a key for reference. The letter need not be long, and in many cases might fill half the page. It should be left-justified in block format, with a single space between most elements before the signature block. It should be semi-formal in tone, use active voice, and be personalized for each job that you are interested in. Most will be similar enough that it’s useful to create a baseline stock copy, and then modify as needed. 

The first element is your home or permanent address, without your name or title (1). After a single space, put today’s date, in written rather than digital format (2). Next, write the name and address of the company you are targeting (3). Ideally you will know the name and title of the person who does the hiring, and this should precede the address. Do some digging if necessary; this will demonstrate knowledge of the target company. 

The salutation (4) should be personalized if you know the recipient’s name, and should take the form of “Dear Ms. Lastname,” “Dear Mr. Lastname,” or “Dear Firstname Lastname.” If you don’t know the recipient’s name, the salutation should be gender-neutral. “To Whom It May Concern:” is rather impersonal; “Dear Sir or Madam,” or “Dear Sir/Madam,” is better. 

The body of the letter should be three or four paragraphs. In the first paragraph (5), state your purpose for writing, i.e. your interest in the job. This is a good place to demonstrate knowledge of the company, to appropriate their buzzwords or slogans, and to drop the names of any internal recommendations. This is a place for active verbs and vivid adjectives. You are capturing the reader’s interest. 

In the middle paragraph or paragraphs (6), you are summarizing your background and experience as it relates to this particular job. You don’t want this to just be a redundant reiteration of your resumé; you want to better flesh out who you are, why you want the job, and why you’d be the ideal candidate, making your case in ways that you canno t within the rigid confines of a resumé. It’s OK to get a little personal here, sharing the influences that made you who you are, and explaining (in a positive manner) why you’re ready to move on to this job (7). This is a good spot to humblebrag how you’ve been a positive force at your current and previous employers (8), and to bring up subtle factors that set you apart from the competition (9). 

The closing paragraph (10) is the place to make your call to action. You’re asking for an interview here; don’t be shy about it. Make reference to enclosures, include your contact information, and close on a gracious note. 

The signature block (11) should include a valediction (“Sincerely,” is a safe bet; “Sincerely yours,” “Respectfully yours,” or “Cordially,” are also good options), and then four spaces, followed by your name, formatted as it appears on the header of your resume. Within the four spaces you can insert a graphic of your signature, or leave blank to be physically signed if printed on paper, or just leave blank altogether. After your name and an additional space, type the word “Enclosures:” and the number of physical or email attachments included.

If this cover letter is intended to be taken with you while you pound the pavement or attend job fairs, print it on high-quality paper similar (but not necessarily identical) to that of your resume.

ALPENA — Alpena County commissioners cleared the way for a developer to build a gas station and convenience store near the corner of M-32 and Airport Road.

The county owns six parcels of land where the new business will be built, but none of the properties have utility infrastructure, which almost threw a monkey wrench in the project.

Earlier this year, the county entered into a purchase agreement with developer Duane Jennings to sell him two parcels for the gas station. Jennings was willing to pay $80,000 for one lot and $55,000 for the second.

The agreement stated that the county would make infrastructure available.

At Tuesday’s Finance, Ways, and Means Committee meeting, Jennings presented the committee with an estimate for a little more than $124,000, which would cover the cost of power, water, and sewer to the property.

Instead of paying for utility work, the commissioners decided to sign the property over to Jennings, who will pay for the needed infrastructure added.

Jennings said if the cost of the work is less than what the estimate is, he will pay the county the balance back, but if the infrastructure project exceeds the estimate, he will cover the additional costs.

Jennings described his project and said he would like construction on the gas station to start in the fall and the new business to open next year.

“I envision an up-to-date, state-of-the-art fuel-filling station for residents and commercial vehicles, like semis,” he said. “There will be food options. There is really nothing there for when people come into the base or the airport. I think it will really serve that little area there.”

Jennings installing the needed infrastructure doesn’t fix the overall problem, however, as it still leaves the balance of the parcels with no water, sewer, or other needed utilities.

The commissioners discussed what it could cost to have the work done, knowing it would increase the value of the land, which the county is selling to help bolster revenue to a budget that is more than $1.5 million underwater.

The property is located in Alpena Township, and Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe was at Tuesday’s meeting. Skibbe told the commissioners they should be working on a plan to add the needed infrastructures because there will be little interest until it is done, and developers won’t want to utilize a well for water because of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

PFAS was detected at the base in 2017 and a remediation effort was conducted. Sampling and testing of drinking wells within a one-mile radius of the base showed no unsafe water, but Skibbe said it is likely a developer would want access to the municipal water system and not have a well installed.

“In terms of marketability of those parcels, you are adjacent to a PFAS contaminated site, so without having the connectivity of water and sewer infrastructure, the value of those parcels is less than you can even imagine,” Skibbe said.

The new gas station is slated to have at least one neighbor on the undeveloped land as the new recycling facility is to be built by the Northeast Michigan Materials Management Authority.

Jefferson county airport’s eaa hangar issue gets discussed further.

WINTERSVILLE — The Jefferson County Regional Airport Authority Monday continued discussions regarding a hangar-related issue raised last month by the new president of the Jefferson County Airpark’s resident Experimental Aircraft Association chapter.

The airport authority’s board of trustees heard from trustee Geary Bates and David Tulenko, former president of EAA Chapter 859, who provided context behind comments made by current chapter President MaryAnn Freeze during the board’s April 4 meeting.

Freeze had expressed that some chapter members were upset about allegedly being forced to relocate from their longtime hangar without any alternative. The relocation was allegedly sprung on the chapter at one of its meetings by Bates, who said the hangar would be torn down to make way for future development.

Freeze claimed members were not offered the chance to rent the chapter’s previous hangar, which was later rented to another individual who is not involved with the EAA.

But Bates said there was more to the story than what was said last month. According to him, discussions around replacing the EAA hangar with new developments was not a hasty decision, taking place over about two years, beginning around 2020.

The airport had been looking to expand its available hangars, specifically seeking to add more on the southeast end of the airport’s box hangars, Bates said. However, changes in hangar spacing regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration caused the airport authority to scrap the idea — the chapter-occupied EAA hangar was too close to construct what was desired while still adhering to code.

Bates said he had approached Tulenko to address how to expand the hangars while accommodating the EAA chapter. He met with the chapter to discuss options, one of which was tearing down the EAA hangar and rebuilding it, though that wouldn’t be cost-effective because the electrical wiring would need to be redone.

In the end, Bates said, the airport authority and the chapter agreed to a contract stipulating that the latter would relocate to one of the airport’s T-hangars. Based on a value assessment of the EAA hangar, the chapter was credited with about $60,000 to cover 17 years of rent in its new location.

This freed up the EAA hangar to be demolished in preparation for future development. However, planning slowed, and the hangar was leased to another individual on a year-by-year basis in the interim, with the added understanding that he would be relocated if development should re-commence.

Tulenko, who was chapter president for 35 years, said the hangar relocation “worked out excellently for us,” noting that paying fees for the EAA hangar was becoming a financial burden for chapter members. With rent covered in its new location for 17 years, the chapter is more at liberty to revitalize, he said noting that the once-booming chapter is currently trying to foster new growth.

Regarding the hangar’s being leased to another individual, Tulenko said that, once the hangar was back in the airport authority’s hands, it was free to do with it what it wanted.

Airport authority board President Brandon Reese said the contract was clearly approved by both parties, and any unhappiness from within the chapter should have been addressed internally. Instead, he added, the unhappiness seemed to have spilled out into the airport authority’s business inappropriately.

Separately, the board approved Jim Davis Enterprises Inc. to perform runway crack sealing. Jim Davis’ $14,400 quote was accepted over a $31,820 crack sealing quote from VHV Asphalt Care.

Additionally, Jim Davis was approved to fill cracks, seal and paint the terminal parking lot for $3,595. Provided work remains in the same price range, Jim Davis was also approved to do the same work in Anthony Mining building parking lot, since it is roughly the same size as the terminal’s lot.

Reese noted that a member of the Davis family is part of Pier Aviation LLC’s flight school in the airport, but the relation shouldn’t be close enough to pose a conflict.

Reese added that the airport’s main road suffers from gravel, to which Bates and airport manager Brian Thaxton said the gravel is only a result of recent rain events.

In other business:

• The board approved Lance Wanamaker of Michael Baker International to submit wildlife fence design plans — at 90 percent completion and therefore eligible for submission — to the FAA for review. Reese noted he’d like to see an ID card system for certain fence gates be mapped out in the plans.

• The board approved Wanamaker to seek an independent fee estimate to go with Michael Baker’s design for a parallel taxiway on the 14 end of the airport’s runway. Extending the taxiway would cost about $200,000 for design and $2,000,000 for construction, of which the airport would be expected to pay 10 percent. Depending on when phases are begun, Wanamaker said, the airport may be able to leverage bipartisan infrastructure law funding.

• The board approved authorizing a Carrollton-based doctor to occasionally perform aviation medical examinations for pilots in a room of the terminal. The doctor will not be required to pay to provide the service in the terminal.

• Following another executive session for lease negotiations, the board approved continuing to offer a $100 monthly lease credit to Pier Aviation based on the improvements made to its hangar.

• The board approved recommending to the Jefferson County commissioners that a $1 raise be given to two airport employees following an executive session regarding their respective performance reviews. Reese noted that the airport is currently understaffed by one, so the two employees have been performing exemplary work with added responsibilities.

• The board entered an executive session for lease negotiations with two representatives of Bates Brothers Amusement and Commissioner Tony Morelli.

• Tulenko reported that Chapter 859 is in the infant stages of planning a static aircraft display and visit day for individuals with special needs. The event will likely occur in late July, he said, adding that the chapter has several other events planned for the year.

• Airport manager Brian Thaxton reported that a ground power unit that arrived to the airport is being repaired by Bates’ brother without charge.

Metro 2024-25 Budget Increases Spending to Boost Ridership, Bolster Safety

A Metro committee has approved the agency’s nearly $9 billion budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year, and officials are saying Thursday the money will be used to finalize infrastructure projects, boost ridership and bolster safety.

Metro’s Finance, Budget and Audit Committee unanimously voted Wednesday in favor of moving the proposed budget forward for consideration by the agency’s Board of Directors at its meeting later this month. The spending plan must be adopted before the July 1 start of the 2024-25 fiscal year.

“In last year’s budget, we made significant investments in frequency, reliability, cleanliness, and safety, and we provided needed resources to advance our capital projects to provide more and better transit services to all Los Angeles County residents. Those investments helped boost our ridership by 10.2% in the first three-quarters of FY24 compared to FY23,” Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins wrote in her budget letter.

She added, “This year, we are doubling down on those commitments to welcome more riders back to our system and provide a better transit experience than ever before.”

The proposed $8.9 billion budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year is 4.3% lower, or a reduction of some $400 million, compared to the $9.3 billion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Wiggins attributed the reduction to a $198 million decrease in revenues, and a decrease in grant funding coming to the agency. Additionally, bond proceeds and carryover funds are expected to drop in the coming fiscal year.

Highlights of the spending plan include:

— $255.4 million for cleaning, a 14.4% or $32.1 million increase compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year;

— $354.1 million for public safety resource deployment, an 11% or $35 million increase compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year;

— $2.7 billion for transit operations for bus, rail and Metro Micro, a 11.4% or $272.4 million increase over the 2023-24 fiscal year;

— $2.2 billion for various improvements to the bus system, including increasing frequency of service, an increase of 17.5% compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year;

— $2 billion for Transit Infrastructure Development, representing a reduction of about 21% in this area compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year; and

— $2.1 billion to cities to cover costs related to transit programs and services, along with funding for toll grants and open streets programs, a .03% reduction compared to the 2023-24 fiscal year.

In the coming fiscal year, Metro is expected to complete the Airport Metro connector in the fall, connecting the C and K Lines. The budget will also support testing and pre-revenue service on the D (Purple Line) Subway Extension Phase 1 and the Foothill A Line Extension to Pomona.

In a bid to create a stronger sense of security, Metro will hire 53 more Transit Security Officers and look to make permanent its Ambassador Program. In her letter, Wiggins also outlined plans to install tempered glass barriers to ensure the safety of bus operators.

Metro will look to hire 165 more custodians and facilities maintenance employees, and up to 50 part-time custodians through its Room-to-Work Program, which is geared to providing unhoused riders and other individuals with jobs in Metro.

Another area of focus is addressing safety and cleanliness at specific stations, including Pershing Square, Compton, Firestone, Harbor Freeway, Lake, Norwalk and Pico. Metro made improvements at the Westlake/MacArthur Park station that led to a decrease in crime and fare evasion that officials would like to see at other stations.

“The FY25 budget listens to our customers and makes investments in the areas they want us to address the most,” Wiggins said in her budget letter.

“As we look forward to hosting the FIFA World Cup, and the NBA All-Star Game in 2026, the Super Bowl in 2027, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028, each of these investments will help deliver a world-class transit system for residents and visitors to L.A. County that will help us be ready for those events as well as making legacy improvements that will benefit Angelenos long after all those activities are over.”

Paris Promised the Olympics Would Be Accessible. The Clock Is Ticking.

The city, which put inclusivity at the center of its bid, has improved access for people with disabilities, but with the opening ceremony about 12 weeks away, obstacles remain.

During a trip to Paris last November, Samantha Renke just couldn’t seem to find a taxi that could accommodate her motorized wheelchair.

“Every time I logged on, it just kept saying, ‘Unavailable, unavailable, unavailable,’” Ms. Renke said, recounting her struggle to book an accessible cab using the G7 taxi app . Eating out was also a problem for Ms. Renke, a 38-year-old British actress and disability campaigner who has a genetic condition commonly known as brittle bones: Too few restaurants had step-free access.

As Paris prepares to welcome around 15 million visitors — an estimated 350,000 with disabilities — for the Olympics and Paralympics, the city is still working to fulfill its promise to make itself “universally accessible” before the opening ceremony, on July 26.

“Paris will be accessible. We are rising to the challenge,” said Fadila Khattabi , the minister delegate for disabled people.

Paris put inclusivity and accessibility at the center of its bid to host the Summer Games, and the city has made a great deal of headway. For example, the newly built 128-acre Olympic and Paralympic Village , hailed by the organizers and advocacy groups as a shining example of universal design, offers accessible buildings, multisensory signage and zones for assistance dogs. The city plans to have 1,000 wheelchair-accessible taxis by the time the Games open (it had just 250 in 2022), and Uber will increase its fleet of accessible vehicles to 170, from 40.

Despite this progress, advocacy groups like APF France Handicap are concerned that the city remains unprepared for visitors with disabilities. For example, said Pascale Ribes, the group’s president, train and airline companies need to be notified in advance to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs.

And even that isn’t always enough, explained Ms. Ribes, who uses a wheelchair: Recently, she said, staff members at a Paris airport refused to bring her personal wheelchair to the jet bridge after a domestic flight. Another time she almost missed her connecting flight waiting for promised assistance.

A new urgency

France’s first law mandating accessibility in public spaces dates back to 1975, but effective enforcement has been a challenge. The Olympics and Paralympics have brought new urgency to the issue. “It’s not just accessibility for people with reduced mobility,” said Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, in an interview last month. It is about all disabilities, including sensory disabilities. “This will be a very important legacy of the Games,” she added.

Lamia El Aaraje , the deputy mayor in charge of universal accessibility and people with disabilities, has worked to make shops, schools, public services, cultural and sports facilities, and buses and trams accessible across the city. In the last 10 months, at least 1,750 bus shelters have been renovated to be compatible with bus wheelchair ramps.

Unfortunately, even this hasn’t always made life easier for people with disabilities. Ms. Ribes recounts instances when buses have parked too far from the curb, making it impossible for the ramp to reach the sidewalk. On crowded buses, wheelchair users may have difficulty gaining access to the two places designated for them.

The Olympics and Paralympics have also driven change at the city’s two main airports, which have added changing areas, sensory rooms and zones for assistance dogs. The airports are also working toward a long-term goal: transitioning from assisting passengers to removing the barriers that prevent disabled fliers from being autonomous; this includes letting passengers use their own wheelchairs, instead of airport wheelchairs, on jet bridges.

The city’s extensive Metro system poses its own special challenges for visitors with disabilities, with only one line (No. 14) fully accessible. This line, part of the ambitious Grand Paris Express project, will serve Orly Airport this summer. Other lines incorporate tactile paving, which has textures that help blind and visually impaired people, and more than half offer audio and visual announcements inside the trains.

Two suburban lines, RER A and B are also considered accessible by the regional transport agency. RER B serves both airports, though Ms. Ribes says people with disabilities still often need assistance on this line. For the Games, the city will also offer what Ms. Ribes considers temporary solutions: 200 shuttles for wheelchair users and their companions between Paris train stations and sports sites.

‘The law is not enough’

Since the 2012 Games in London, there has been a significant shift in the Olympics’ approach to accessibility. For those Games, access was integrated into the construction of new sites. But starting with the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, a big move toward sustainability meant that Paris 2024 used more existing venues instead of building new ones. This has posed both challenges and opportunities for accessibility.

The Paris 2024 committee has reserved 280,000 tickets for spectators with disabilities, and the venues themselves will be accessible. Many, but not all, of the events will have audio descriptions in French and English, and the organizers are being as inclusive as possible, said Julien Zéléla, a board member for the French Federation for the Blind .

French regulations require 4 percent of hotel rooms to be accessible, but the total number of such rooms in Paris is unknown. Airbnb (which has 13 accessibility filters) and Vrbo (which has a wheelchair filter) also offer accessible listings in the Paris region.

The Paralympian and wheelchair rugby player Ryadh Sallem acknowledges that hotels are making efforts to be more accessible, but said, “When we want to host a major competition, it becomes very problematic; sometimes we need to book several hotels” for a group of athletes.

Despite the progress, one barrier to accessibility remains stubbornly persistent: public attitudes.

“The law is not enough. We really need to change mentalities,” Ms. Ribes said. For example, cabs have refused to pick her up, she said, telling her that her wheelchair would dirty the vehicle’s interior. Last year, an Uber driver was accused of attacking a blind man for getting into his car with a guide dog. Since then, Uber has made its 40,000 drivers in France watch a short disability awareness video . In anticipation of the Games, other companies, including the operator of Paris’s airports, the Accor hotel group and the G7 taxi service are providing their employees with training on disability awareness.

With the Games about three months away, Mr. Sallem is cautiously optimistic about their long-term benefits for the city. The Olympics and Paralympics have made everyone think of accessibility “as an investment,” he said, “a project for the future.”
