Skills To Highlight

Technical Expertise : As a Technical Account Manager, you will be responsible for providing technical support and guidance to customers. It is important to demonstrate your strong technical knowledge and expertise in areas relevant to the products or services you will be managing. Highlight your experience with different technologies, systems, and software that are commonly used in your field. Employers are looking for candidates who have excellent customer relationship management skills. Showcase your ability to understand customer needs, provide exceptional customer service, and effectively manage customer expectations. You can provide examples of how you have successfully built and maintained relationships with customers in previous roles, highlighting any specific strategies or techniques you utilized.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

When writing a cover letter for a Technical Account Manager position, it's important to avoid these common mistakes:

Being Too Generic : One of the biggest mistakes you can make is using a generic cover letter that could be used for any job application. Hiring managers can easily spot a generic cover letter and it shows a lack of effort and interest in the specific role. Instead, take the time to customize your cover letter for each application, highlighting relevant skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the Technical Account Manager position.

Failing to Showcase Technical Experience : As a Technical Account Manager, it's crucial to demonstrate your technical expertise and experience in your cover letter. Don't assume that the hiring manager will automatically know about your technical skills based on your resume alone. Take the opportunity to highlight specific technical skills and experiences that are relevant to the role, such as your experience with software systems, programming languages, or troubleshooting technical issues.

Not Demonstrating the Ability to Understand and Address Customer Needs : As a Technical Account Manager, your role will involve working closely with customers and addressing their technical needs and concerns. It's important to show in your cover letter that you have the ability to understand and address customer needs effectively. Provide examples of how you have successfully resolved customer issues in the past, or how you have proactively identified and addressed potential technical challenges for customers.

Neglecting to Research the Company : A common mistake in cover letter writing is not taking the time to research the company you are applying to. Hiring managers want to see that you have a genuine interest in the company and understand its products, services, and values. Take the time to research the company and incorporate your findings into your cover letter. Show that you have a good understanding of the company's goals, challenges, and how you can contribute to its success as a Technical Account Manager.

Focusing Only on Technical Skills : While technical skills are important for a Technical Account Manager, it's also crucial to highlight your interpersonal and communication skills. Your cover letter should demonstrate that you have the ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and that you can build strong relationships with clients. Highlight examples of your excellent communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and your ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

By avoiding these common mistakes in your cover letter for a Technical Account Manager position, you can increase your chances of standing out as a strong candidate and landing an interview. Take the time to tailor your cover letter to each application, showcase your technical experience, demonstrate your ability to understand and address customer needs, research the company, and highlight your interpersonal and communication skills.

In conclusion, a well-crafted cover letter can greatly enhance your chances of landing a rewarding position as a technical account manager. Through the examples provided in this article, we have seen how effective cover letters can effectively highlight key skills and experiences, showcase enthusiasm for the role, and demonstrate a strong understanding of the company and its needs.

By tailoring your cover letter to each specific job application and incorporating these key elements, you can make a memorable impression on hiring managers and stand out from the competition. Remember to always use a professional tone, proofread for errors, and keep the letter concise and focused on the most relevant information.

In the competitive field of technical account management, a strong cover letter can be the difference between securing an interview and getting overlooked. Take the time to craft a compelling cover letter that showcases your qualifications and passion for the role, and you will increase your chances of success in your job search.

Best of luck in your job application process!

How to write the perfect technical account manager cover letter.

Technical Account Manager cover letter

Would a good cover letter increase your chances of landing an interview? Yes.

Do we have any specific tips for Technical Account Manager applications? Yes.

Are cover letters the same as resumes, but longer? Definitely not!

So what are cover letters?

Well, great cover letters give you the opportunity to tell a personal story, while making the right impression and proving you’re the best candidate at the same time.

Need more details? Let’s dive deep.

technical account manager coverletter.png

So what’s the difference between a cover letter and a resume?

In short – the resume showcases your achievements and skills, while the cover letter focuses more on your personality and motivations.

Of course, you should mention some of your relevant skills in the cover letter as well. But make sure you’re not repeating your resume word by word.

Now let's move on to the things that make every cover letter great!

Use an appropriate salutation and write a powerful introduction

Address your cover letter directly to the hiring manager, whenever possible. This has proven to be a good approach for two reasons.

First, it shows your attention to detail.

Second, it proves that you’re willing to do some research and go the extra mile for the sake of success.

But if finding the recruiter’s name is too difficult, you can go for a traditional gender-neutral phrase.

Here’s our selection of strong salutations. Feel free to borrow any of them:

  • Dear Ms. Smith
  • Dear Peter Roberts
  • To the [company name] Recruitment Team
  • Dear Hiring Manager

The introduction of your Technical Account Manager cover letter is without a doubt crucial for the first impression you’ll make as an applicant. But is there a way to make sure your opening line is good enough?

Yes, there is. You can start by sharing your enthusiasm for the job or the field (or why not both!). You could also share your reasons to find the company exciting.

Try to be original. Don’t go for phrases like “I want to apply for the position that I saw advertised on platform X”. They're outdated and sound like you’ve got nothing better to say

Emphasize your technical account manager soft skills and mention your hard skills

Although you’ve probably listed all your skills on your resume, it’s worth mentioning them again, but by telling a personal story. Focusing on your soft skills and leaving most hard ones behind is also a good idea.

Maybe you want to mention the things that help you overcome setbacks? Or the things that help you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter what you choose, as long as you link it back to the specific job requirements.

Naturally, if the job advert mentions some hard skills explicitly, you should do the same in your cover letter. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen resumes and cover letters for certain keywords.

Show that you know the company and its problems well

How can you prove your excitement about the company? By showing that you’ve taken the time to research its issues, goals, and plans. You can also link them to your skills and experience if you want to show that you're really a strong candidate.

In addition to making a great impression, researching the company will help you find out if you really want to be part of this team or not. After all, interviewing is a two-way process.

End on a positive note

Ending your cover letter in an actionable way is one of the things that increase your chances of getting a callback.

The conclusion is also your opportunity to thank the recruiter for their time and consideration, so don’t skip that.

Just make sure to go for an ending that matches the company culture and language. If you prefer to be on the safe side, choose traditional closing lines such as “Looking forward to your reply”.

Here's the step-by-step breakdown:

Account Manager Cover Letter Overview: What To Know To Write A Cover Letter That Wins More Job Offers

What do companies look for when they're hiring an Account Manager?

Companies want candidates with a blend of sales, customer service, communication, and technical skills. They look for individuals with a proven track record of delivering results, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage complex relationships. Employers also value industry knowledge and strategic thinking, along with the ability to build strong relationships with customers.

Your cover letter should show the company that your personality and your experience encompasses all of these things.

Additionally, there are a few best practices you want to follow to write a job-winning Account Manager cover letter:

  • Customize your letter: Start by addressing the hiring manager by name, if possible, and mention the specific account manager role you are applying for. This shows that you have taken the time to personalize your letter.
  • Highlight your qualifications: Emphasize your relevant experience and skills, such as your ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, your experience in sales and account management, and your strong communication skills. Make sure to include measurable metrics and outcomes whenever possible to illustrate your value.
  • Demonstrate your knowledge of the company: Show that you have done your research on the company and explain why you are interested in working there. Mention specific projects, products, or services that you admire.
  • Be concise and clear: Your cover letter should be short, concise and easy to read. Stick to one page and focus on the most important information.
  • End with a call to action: Conclude your cover letter by asking for an interview or expressing your interest in discussing the opportunity further.
  • Proofread: Make sure to thoroughly proofread your cover letter for any grammatical errors or typos. A well-written, error-free letter can make a strong first impression. I recommend using Hemingway App to do this.

Let's dive deeper into each of these so you have the exact blueprint you need to see success.

The Best Account Manager Skills To Include On Your Cover Letter

Keywords are one of the most important factors in your cover letter. They show employers that your skills align with the role and they also help format your cover letter for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If you're not familiar with ATS systems, they are pieces of software used by employers to manage job applications. They scan cover letters for keywords and qualifications and make it easier for the employers to filter and search for candidates whose qualifications match the role.

If you want to win more interviews and job offers, you need to have a keyword-optimized cover letter. There are two ways to find the right keywords:

1. Leverage The 20 Best Account Manager Keywords

The first is to leverage our list of the best keywords and skills for an Account Manager cover letter.

These keywords were selected from an analysis of  real  Account Manager job descriptions sourced from actual job boards. Here they are:

  • Communication
  • Relationships
  • Development
  • Partnerships
  • Account Management
  • Organization

2. Use ResyMatch.io To Find The Best Keywords That Are Specific To Your Cover Letter And Target Role

The second method is the one I recommend because it's personalized to your specific cover letter and target job.

Example of Skills For Account Manager Resume

Here's how it works:

  • Open a copy of your updated Account Manager cover letter
  • Open a copy of your target Account Manager job description
  • In the widget below, paste the job description and hit scan!

ResyMatch is going to scan the target job description and show you the exact keywords and skills that are relevant for the role and that you should weave into your cover letter.

If you're ready to check it out, grab your target job description and run your first scan here:

To start, paste your target job description (or multiple job descriptions) into the box below:

Scan to help you identify keywords and skills within your target job description.

Scanning...

If you're more of a visual learner, here's a video walking through this whole process so you can follow along:

Personalization is what makes a cover letter stand out. That starts from the very first sentence where you greet the person reading your cover letter! There are two ways to do this well:

1. Use The Hiring Manager's Name

The first, and best, is by including the hiring manager's name. Let's say that you discovered the hiring manager's name from a post on LinkedIn or via an informational interview.

This is the jackpot! All you need to do is use their name in the introduction, like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Hiring Manager's Name

2. Use This Formula: To The [Department] Team at [Company]

If you don't have the hiring manager's name, no problem! You can address your cover letter to the team that you're applying to.

For example, if you're applying to for a Product Marketing Manager role at Discovery Education, you might start you cover letter like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Team & Company

This shows the reader that this letter has been written specifically for them and the content inside of it will support that.

It's much more relevant and personal than  “To Whom It May Concern!”

3 Tips For Writing A Job-Winning Account Manager Cover Letter

You're off to a strong start! But I've got a few more tips to help you take your cover letter to the next level:

1. Use ChatGPT To Write Your Cover Letter In <30 Seconds

All of these tips and best practices work, but you still have to implement them. Normally, that'd mean you sitting down and spending hours brainstorming ideas, typing, deleting, and typing again, and then feeling absolutely drained.

Now there's a way to work around all of that so you save your best energy for the writing and edits that matter most. Here's how it works:

  • Head to ChatGPT (you'll need to create an account – it's free)
  • Ask ChatGPT,  “Please write me a cover letter for an Account Manager role. The role I'm applying for is [Job Title] role at [Company]. Here is the job description: [Paste Job Description]. And here is my resume: [Paste Resume].
  • Watch ChatGPT write up a pretty darn good cover letter base!

Here's a video of me doing this with a real cover letter if you want to see the steps in action:

Note:  I  do not recommend or advise that you simply copy and paste the content from ChatGPT into your cover letter and submit your application. ChatGPT is great for doing 80% of the baseline work, but you still need to review, revise, and personalize the content yourself.

2. Include Measurable Metrics And Outcomes

Too many job seekers only focus on the actions that they took and not the outcomes that resulted from those actions. As a hiring manager, it's impossible to differentiate between a dozen candidates who were all “Responsible For Managing A Book Of Key Accounts.”

If you want to win, your cover letter should speak to the specific outcomes that you drove in previous roles. That could be:

  • The amount of revenue you drove
  • The number of clients you managed
  • The retention rate of your clients
  • The satisfaction rate your clients shared

These numbers will show hiring teams what you're capable of and make your value crystal clear!

3. Match Your Cover Letter And Resume Design

Quality Impacts Perceived Value - Car Example

They're the exact same car, down to the year, make, and model. The only difference is the way the product was presented. Like I said, quality impacts perceived value.

One of the best ways to boost the quality of your cover letter is to make it look clean, professional, and have it match your resume. That's why the resume templates in our resume builder tool match the cover letter templates in our cover letter builder:

Matching Cover Letter And Resume

If you use both tools to create your cover letter and your resume, your entire application is going to be top notch.

These 3 Account Manager cover letter examples will provide you with some good ideas on how to format a cover letter, along with the type of message you should be trying to put across to recruiters .

To further understand exactly how you can write a cover letter that will get you noticed, check out our further guidance.

How to write a Account Manager cover letter

Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When writing your Account Manager cover letter, it’s best to type the content into the body of your email (or the job site messaging system) and not to attach the cover letter as a separate document.

This ensures that your cover letter gets seen as soon as a recruiter or employer opens your message.

If you attach the cover letter as a document, you’re making the reader go through an unnecessary step of opening the document before reading it.

If it’s in the body of the message itself, it will be seen instantly, which hugely increases the chances of it being read.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To build an instant connection with the recruiter reading your cover letter, start with a warm greeting.

It should be friendly but not casual – keeping it professional at all times.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

  • I am interested in applying for the position of Account Manager with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 406f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for a junior project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your CV, you should sign off with a professional signature.

This will give your cover letter a slick appearance and also give the recruiter all of the necessary contact information they need to get in touch with you.

The information to add should include:

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Kindest regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network –  e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Jill North IT Project Manager 078837437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip: To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate documents that you could copy in.

What to include in your Account Manager cover letter

So, what type of information should you write about in your Account Manager cover letter?

The specifics will obviously depend on your profession and the jobs you are applying to, but these are the key areas you should be covering.

  • Your industry experience – Tell recruiters the types of companies you have been working for and the roles you have held in the past.
  • Your qualifications – Highlight your most important relevant qualifications to show employers you are qualified to do the roles you are applying for.
  • The impact you have made – Demonstrate the positive impact you have made for employers in previous jobs. Have you saved money? Improved processes? Made customers happy?
  • Your reasons for moving – Employers will want to know why you are leaving your current/previous role, so provide them with a brief explanation here.
  • Your availability – When will you be able to start a new job ? Check your current contract to find out your notice period if you are in a position already.
