IELTS Essay, topic: The Internet and communication

• IELTS Essays - Band 7

Some say that the Internet is making the world smaller by bringing people together. To what extent do to you agree that the Internet is making it easier for people to communicate with one another?

Electronic mail, instant messages, web cameras and microphones; all these gadgets and programs make the presence of the other person more real. Who knows; with the help of visual reality you might even get a 3-D image of the speaker! I believe that the Internet is one the best inventions of the last century, you can hardly get to miss anyone and nobody is really out of reach. You can keep in touch with your friends, and be able to do your work from your bedroom in your pajamas!

However, the internet can also be a major source of harassment. Spammers and hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which otherwise they never get access to. You are never out of anybody’s reach, unless you make a conscious decision of not checking your email, there can be always more work waiting for you in your inbox and you might never have a moment to yourself. Worse yet, if you were a workaholic, you might never experience that stress-free vacation ever again in your life – simply, because you have your mobile workplace with you at all times.

As a romantic, I will always look forward to getting an occasional letter in the snail mail. A personal letter, where I can sense the mood of the writer by the slants in his/her handwriting and get to know him/her better. But as a type A personality person, the internet gives me all what I dream of in terms of communication – the speed, reliability, and convenience of time and place. I can certainly tolerate its shortcomings any day, as long as it keeps me close to my loved ones.

This is a great essay, which seems worthy of Band 7 or perhaps even 8. It is longer than required (340 words instead of 250) which means that it took you more time to write and less time to check your work.

Q. Does the educational system prepare individuals for the workplace? Why or why not?

Ans . The question of whether the education system adequately prepares individuals for the workplace is a topic that has been highly debated by educators, employers and students alike. I believe that today’s education system, despite its merits, often falls short of preparing individuals for the workplace and there are several reasons for this.

Firstly, the educational system is very theoretical and lacks practical application. For instance, a student who is studying engineering may understand the principles of how bridges are being constructed, but without hands-on practical experience, they may find it very difficult to apply this knowledge in a real-world context. This gap between academic knowledge and practical application can leave students very ill-prepared for the demands of the workplace. 

Secondly, the rapid advancement in technological change can present significant challenges. The curriculum of schools and universities often struggles to keep up with the latest changes in technology and industry practices. For example, a student who is studying information and technology may learn about programming languages or software that can become obsolete by the time they enter their workplace. This constant evolution requires individuals to be lifelong learners as a skill can not always be fostered by the traditional educational system. 

Thirdly, the current educational system often fails to develop soft skills in people that are often required in the workplace. These include things like communication, teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability. While all of these skills can be developed with the help of extracurricular activities, they are often not given the same emphasis as academic achievements within the classroom. Last but not least, the immense emphasis placed on grades and academic achievement can create a narrow definition of success. This can lead to a lack of creativity and innovation, skills that are highly appreciated in the modern workplace. For example, a student who is always taught to follow a certain set of procedures to achieve the correct answer will always struggle in a workplace that always appreciates innovative thinking and problem-solving. 

To conclude, while the education system does lay the foundation of knowledge and skills, it often does not fully prepare individuals for the realities of the workplace.

100 IELTS Essay Topics for IELTS Writing

Let me start by saying that by far the best resource for authentic IELTS essay topics are the Cambridge 1 – 13 books. These are real past IELTS exam papers and, therefore, provide students with the highest quality questions for all parts of the test. However, what do you do if you have finished the Cambridge books? Or you struggle with one particular type of question and want a lot of that specific type of practise?

Well, until now, people have relied on questions that were “memorised” by test-takers(often incorrectly), or written by well-meaning teachers who have no specific education in test creation. As a result, many of the “IELTS questions” on the Internet are worded incorrectly. And, as a professional exam writer ( yes, I work creating academic exams for universities ), I know how damaging it can be if even one word in a question is changed.

So, today I am sharing my list of 100 IELTS writing topics. Some are taken from old exam papers, a few are from the Cambridge books, but most are from my own course .  More importantly, I can guarantee that each of these questions is as “authentic” as a question can be.  Have fun (and let me know your favourite question in the comments!)

IELTS opinion essays mainly focus on agreeing or disagreeing with a particular fact or information. It presents two opposite views and you have to develop your argument supporting one view (strictly one!) You get 40 minutes to complete this task. You have to write at least 250 words on the topic given.

Given below are some examples of IELTS Writing Task 2 opinion essays along with their structure. So, let’s understand how to frame the IELTS opinion essay from the sample answers given in the blog!

What is the IELTS Opinion Essay Format?

If you’re gearing up to tackle the Opinion Essay in IELTS Writing Task 2, know that it’s all about writing your opinion on a specific topic with supporting examples. To make sure your essay ticks off all the criteria of a band 8+ essay, organizing it in the right way is key!

Let’s now look at a proper format to learn the structuring of an IELTS opinion essay.

Introduction:

• Keep it short, usually around 2-3 sentences.
• Introduce the topic and clearly state your opinion.
• Provide a brief overview of the main points you will discuss in the body paragraphs.

Body Paragraphs (Usually 2 paragraphs):

• Each paragraph should focus on a single main idea that supports your opinion.
• Start with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea.
• Provide evidence, examples, and reasoning to support your main idea.
• Aim for coherence and cohesion within each paragraph by using appropriate transition words.
• Make sure to use appropriate vocabulary and grammar while explaining an idea in the body paragraphs.

Conclusion:

• Summarize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.
• Restate your opinion, emphasizing its importance or relevance.
• Avoid introducing new ideas in the conclusion.

Body Paragraph 2

I agree with this statement, and will explain it further with relevant examples in the essay.

It is a well-known fact that in this day and age if an individual wants to read a book or just go over the news of the day, the first step that they take is to search the internet. Devices such as smartphones and tablets have improved the time efficiency of searching for information online to such an extent that a person can access their preferred form of media in the comfort of their homes in a matter of minutes. Consequently, people have started to abandon their preference for print media due to the presence of much more convenient alternatives.

Additionally, the various forms of print media enjoyed by people can often be availed free of charge on several websites. For instance, most news organizations publish their daily news on their official website, which can be accessed by anyone. Also, some numerous sites and databases provide popular books, journals and magazines in a digital form to the public for a nominal subscription fee or sometimes even for free, leading to a majority of readers of such forms of media shifting away from buying hard copies.

Nevertheless, there is still a sizable chunk of the population that enjoys the conventional forms of print media. That being said, with the cost-effective nature of making such information and content available online, organizations will soon completely shift to internet-based services.

In conclusion, I would like to say that people always prefer the more comfortable alternative that is available. Therefore, it can be safely said that in the coming years, there will be a complete shift from traditional print media to online media services and products.

In fast-paced global economy, it is imperative to have both knowledge and skill. Ability to learn on the job paves way for more hands-on training than discussing case studies at university. Doing a course can be time taking and can surely burn a hole in our parents’ pockets, the middle class knows it better. Getting straight to business of things, meaning starting to work soon after school is beneficial in many ways.

Working in office gives us professional perspective about how business processes are streamlines, turning creative ideas into tangible projects and most importantly getting paid for the amazing work I put out. I feel it’s great to have my ideas being incorporated as solutions to processual issues. Personal growth due to long years of work experience makes us future-ready for the big dream job. Alternatively, some also start their own business after getting gaining a good reputation for their work.

In my personal experience my university education looks good on my CV but has not been financially rewarding for I still have to even out my return on investment. I regret joining an elite institution where I felt out of place as I came from a humble upbringing. However, I learnt a lot about living away from home, managing finances, making new friends, living independently, honed my communication skills.

All in all, I feel it is better to join workforce early on than to do a full-fledged university course. This saves time, money and energy from studying on campus which can be channelized to working with a small business which has ample scope to learn on the job. Later, one can switch to bigger companies with the achieved industry experience after a few years of rigorous hands-on training and development.

The available land for household, industrial and recreational usage is shrinking. We see large scale infrastructure development in India. But for all these activities we need more land on earth itself, not on some other worldly planet, Mars. I would have to disagree that Mars has answers to all our earthly problems. I think it’s more about gaps in planning, policy making and the way we conduct our lives on a day-to-day basis. If we base our routine on sustainable habits, we are already solving more problems than we create. The problems are created on earth so they need solutions on earth itself, I believe.

The problems like polluted resources such as air, water, land, soil have ample ways to be fixed as we read in scientific journals and other informational sources. The popular ‘3 Rs’ such as Recycle, Reuse and Reduce need to be inculcated for us to have clean air, water, soil, land. We need community development along with economic development so the civil society, environment and the development process can go hand-in-hand. Overcrowding in urban areas due to migration for work, education or marriage can be solved by having proper laws. On the other hand, achieving conservation targets for endangered flora and fauna is a vital step towards holistic saving the ecosystem.

Consequently, I strongly believe that having ideas about Mars being an inhabitable place in the future is surely fantastic idea. But It’s a childish way to think of a better world somewhere else than fixing problems at hand. Let’s face it, our survival instincts have made us exploit resources faster than the nature can replenish them. And we see the negative outcomes like sea-level rising, frequent coastal flooding, drastic weather changes, global warming. As a global community of conscious individuals, we need our planet more than it needs us.

In a new country one faces multiple challenges to overcome the culture shock. Different people may adopt the new ways of life at different pace. But I do agree that willing to accept and change with the circumstances can ease the burden.

As we know that change is inevitable, we need to get accustomed to the new culture. There’s no harm in getting the best of both worlds, from your country of origin to this new land of surprises. Festivals, celebrations, new people, new places, new things tend to broaden our perspective on life. We come out much stronger by dealing with the new possibilities. Initially, the surrounding might be tough to make sense of, but with time it should get better.

The decision of moving to a new country is yours so you’d be the person who needs to adapt to get the best possible advantage. Human psychology is common but mannerisms might be different. So, one can learn that through social observation, trial and error and asking questions.

To belong at a place, we must take the initiative to learn the traditions and customs of the new country. To feel welcomed, one must socialize with like minded individuals, take part in group activities at workplace or educational institute or even neighborhood social clubs. Try to get out there, find your niche, excel at what you do, travel and get to know people. It’s easy if you are willing.

Otherwise, you’ll end up losing new experiences which enliven our senses. To live more each day, we need to blend with the culture. Traditions tells us stories of the past which we could relate with stories back at our homeland as well. This way it’s going to be much easier to make bonds, live a cheerful life.

Follow the 4 paragraph structure so that it is easy for the examiner to mark you for coherence. . For opinion essays, it is better to write one line after your opinionated paragraphs. Just one line that you are aware of the other side.

Communication

News plays an important part in most people’s lives. why is news so important to people why is so much news dedicated to bad news should the news focus on the food news instead.

Take a look at the model answer.

The news is a vital way of communicating information in everyone’s lives. This essay believes that being updated to current events makes news essential to our existence. Firstly, this essay will discuss the importance of news to the general public, secondly, why there is a large portion of news devoted to horrific events and lastly, why we should focus more on reporting positive stories.

On the one hand, people should rely on news channels to be updated on current events because somehow the general population is always affected by it. Information we have learned from news broadcasts may affect our choices whether we vote for one person or another, learning about a place that has a conflict or to know what is happening with world economics. For example, Pulse Asia in 2015 reported that 98% of presidential candidates in the Philippines counted on media coverage to reach potential voters all over the country.

On the other hand, many news networks choose to report about negative occurrences simply because of gaining higher ratings. They rely on the numbers of people who tune in to their news programs as this generates a lot of commercials, thus results in larger revenues since companies pay a lot of money for exposure. For example, an article released by GMA news Philippines in 2014 reported that 89% of their audiences would remember news about horrific crimes rather than news about the economic growth of the country.

Lastly, in my opinion, I believe that broadcasters should concentrate more on showing news that inspires other people. Hearing about positive news motivates viewers to have a better view of the world and in society. When disasters strike, often widespread news of people donating food and blankets, can promote the cause and motivate others to get involved. For instance, in my own personal experience in 2016 during the wrath of Haiyan in the Philippines, I was inspired by a news story asking for help, so I sent food and money as a small contribution.

In conclusion, people should be informed about the latest happenings around the globe whether it is good or bad news. News can also inspire people to work together in times of conflict, during wars, natural disasters and other humanitarian plights.

There is no conclusion in writing task 1. The examiner is looking for an overview in task 1 and a conclusion in task 2. This is not an opinion, it is a fact which IELTS has shown in the band scores. All the best Liz

Dear Liz Madam, Could you please rate my filling in the gaps as following of the above task ? 1. I had no idea what she was talking about. Then suddenly she asked a question that I couldn’t understand so I just shrug off my shoulders and walked away.

2. My always tells tall stories. Yesterday he to work with another unbelievable story but the only response I could give was to wink my eyebrows.

3. If there’s one thing I hate, It’s being late. Once I was in a really long meeting at work and by the time we finished I was late to meet my friend. During the meeting I could feel myself getting impatient and my foot started trembling on the floor. 4. I can’t stand watching films at the cinema because you can’t relax like you can in private, particularly when watching an action movie full of surprise and shocks. When there’s a really sudden unexpected scene, my eyes brighen and mouth starts to open which I find really embarrassing in public. 5. I remember once I was late for appointment. When I arrived, which was over 1 hour late, I turned into deep red and stammered an apology.

A good try. If a person knitted their eye brows, it means they were concentrating really hard or possibly a bit angry. So, for this sentence it wouldn’t work. The key is “a tall story” which means a story that might be imaginary because it is too unbelievable. Think of what people do with their eye brows if they don’t really believe something. Check your answer tomorrow. Liz

Hi Liz, My name is Raj and I’m from India. on August 13 , I given a IELTS exam. I wrote in task 2 as per that requirements and your bolg aid me to do so . task 2— “some people say that government should not spend a money as they have disadvantage people like unemployed and homeless, to what extent do you agree or disagree. make the comparison where relevant”.

I used following structure

Introduction paragraph –background statement(today…..) –detailed background statement (this has been seen in……) —- thesis(…….disagree…this idea is supported) —- outline(2 point of view)

supporting paragraph 1 topic—-(Firstly) example(Take,India,for example..) discussion (it is cleared….) conclusion (.it is believed….)

supporting paragraph 2 —topic(on the other hand….) —example(For instance……in Nagaland.) —discussion(it is obvious….) —-conclusion (thus…..)

conclusion paragraph –summary (2 POV) —restatement of thesis —recommendations (it is recommended..)

Can you say this structure is going to help me for score better. I also used the words and phrases Like precursor, fortify,account,the world over,accomplish…. etc.

I can’t say without seeing the actual ideas and how you presented them in each paragraph. Body paragraphs do not need conclusions. “It is believed” is about what other people think but this essay is only about what you think, not other people. Using such words as “precursor” and “the world over” will not help you get a high score unless all your vocabulary is accurate and strong. Just a few words won’t make much difference. The introduction only needs two statements, not three. Without seeing your essay, I can’t comment further but wish you good luck with your results. All the best Liz
