Calligraphy is something most people like to create year-round. However, there’s no denying that it’s a skill that shines (often literally) the most during the holiday season! We spread good cheer with written greetings, fancy invitations, and beautiful meals featuring menus or place cards. It’s a visually resplendent and cozy couple of months. That’s why I love coming up with a holiday worksheet every year! The worksheet gives me an excuse to think of fresh ways to hone our pointed pen skills while learning how to make stunning motifs.

What are TPK Holiday Calligraphy Worksheets?

In 2016, a reader wrote to me and asked for holiday calligraphy examples — perhaps in the form of a worksheet. That request is what sparked the  TPK Holiday Calligraphy Worksheet 2016 Edition ,  and every year after that, a new edition followed. I think readers like the holiday worksheets because they offer guided practice that really helps to set the holiday mood. They just feel … cozy .

The practice in the worksheets sets the stage for making real-life pretty paper goods. People take what they learn in the worksheet sets, and they use that inspiration and knowledge to create beautiful things! The photos below, which I found on Instagram, speak volumes:

What Makes This Year’s Worksheet Special?

This year’s worksheet hones in on relaxation and beauty. I am in a whirlwind stage of life right now (I have a four-year-old and a nine-month-old — need I say more?), and I’ve been loving projects that capitalize on repetitive movements. Making calligraphy flourishes, adding stippling and shading to my work, “building” illustrated wreaths … these are all things that help me unwind.

I like that this year’s worksheet strikes the perfect balance between practice and practical. You’ll find many guided exercises in the worksheet set, and all of those exercises can be used to make holiday paper goods. Work on your pen control and your comfort making any given motif in the worksheet set, and you’ll feel confident calligraphing that motif on a card, gift tag, blank piece of paper, or bookmark.

Think about what projects suit your needs best, then use the worksheet to make those projects. For example, I framed a “Bah! Humbug!” from this year’s worksheet to enhance my holiday decor.

I also made cards using the “Merry Christmas” motif, the illustrated wreath (pictured below), and the flourished ornaments. The worksheet walks you through how to create all of those!

A Quick Holiday Calligraphy Worksheet-Inspired Tutorial

The Holiday Calligraphy Worksheet 2022 Edition begins with three flourished ornament exercises. The tutorial below utilizes two of those exercises and gold watercolor to make a gorgeous greeting card!

Here’s what you’ll need in order to make this card:

• White mechanical pencil
• Black eraser
• Pointed pen + nib (I used a Brause EF66 nib + oblique pen )
• Black cardstock (Cut it to 10″ x 7″, then fold it in half to make a 5″ x 7″ card)
• Arabic gold watercolor
• Size 2-3 paintbrush for loading watercolor onto your nib; learn how to do that here

I’m finally done with the Hallmark holidays (JEFF EDELSTEIN COLUMN)

She got the day.

And then she spent the rest of her life railing against the commercialization of the holiday.

You know what I buy my mother? A plant. A freaking plant. So do you, or flowers, or some other piece of nonsense. What’s the point?

Plus, what the heck am I supposed to do with my wife? She’s not my mother, but she’s the mother of my children. Do I need to cajole them into buying her a plant? Who the bleep wants a plant anyway?

Besides, the idea of having one day to celebrate moms, one day for breakfast in bed, is an insult. My mother — and my wife — deserve more than that, deserve more than a single day on a manufactured holiday to be honored.

But I hate Father’s Day even more. Don’t want a tie, don’t want golf paraphernalia, don’t want grilling equipment. Honestly, I don’t want nuthin’. I’m a father. I have a job to do — be a father. I don’t need a greeting card company ramming it down my kids’ throats.

Besides, I get enough credit for doing the bare minimum, I don’t need a $5 card. (By the way, it’s $5 that I earned.)

Don’t even get me started on other commercialized fake holidays like Valentine’s Day, Secretary’s Day — er, administrative assistant’s day, gah — Grandparents Day, and Boss’s Day.

Boss’s Day. That exists. Eff the man.

Enough already! They’re all excessive, greedy cash-grabs by the chocolate, jewelry, greeting card, and floral industries. Seriously. Who in their right mind ever gets actually excited about any of this stuff? It’s all a chore.

Regular folks can’t even get through a month without corporations trying to make us feel guilty about not buying more overpriced crap to celebrate something. Hey Hallmark, how about a “National Leave Me Alone and Let Me Keep My Money Day?”

I’d buy a card for that.

Here’s an idea: If you really care about your mom, dad, secretary, grandma or boss, you’ll show appreciation more than once a year on some corporate-manufactured holiday. You’ll bake them cookies, watch their kid, or shoot them a thoughtful text, buy them a nice set of lingerie, whatever the mood calls for.

Doing a nice gesture spontaneously, without an excuse or made-up occasion attached to it, actually means something. Sending a $5 card simply because the calendar told you to is the most hollow, disingenuous sentiment imaginable.

You know what? I’m tapping out on all future Hallmark holidays from now on. I’ll honor my loved ones on my own terms, in my own ways, whenever I feel like it. And I’ll keep my hard-earned money out of the hands of the corporate marketing manipulators.

Love ya Mom, love ya Dad, love ya wife, but you’re never getting anything from me on some made-up holiday ever again. I’m out.

Manchester United write to Premier League over rescheduled Bank Holiday kick-off time

Manchester United are writing to the Premier League to ask for greater consideration to be shown to match-going supporters when arranging fixtures after being handed a late Bank Holiday Monday night kick-off against Crystal Palace next month.

United will offer free coach travel to supporters making the trip to Selhurst Park on May 6 in recognition of the logistical difficulties that many fans will face in order to attend the fixture.

The last direct train back to Manchester will leave London Euston at 9.39pm that evening – earlier than the usual 10.03pm service – as operators Avanti West Coast are running an reduced timetable over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Between five and 10 coaches will be provided for fans wishing to travel by coach, subject to demand, while all ticket holders will be entered into a draw to win a signed United shirt.

United supporters recently travelled to London for two late kick-offs against Brentford and Chelsea in the space of five days, while their FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City at Wembley has been scheduled for a 3.30pm kick-off on 21 April.

In a message sent to ticket holders, United said: “We share your frustrations and appreciate the logistical difficulties that have been created for our fans by this fixture being scheduled for an 8pm kick off on bank holiday Monday in London.

“We want to inform you that we are writing to the Premier League to this effect and will be asking for greater consideration to be given to match-going fans when agreeing fixture schedules with broadcasters.”
