Sikhism is one of the most commonly observed faiths in the whole world, with Sikhs making their mark in numerous fields. Their faith teaches love, kindness, and brotherhood. Sikhs always take pride in the teachings of their faith and in the principles propagated by their gurus .

Guru Nanak: Early Life

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on the 15th of April, 1469 in a place called Talwandi , which was then a part of undivided India. He is the first of the gurus of the Sikhs.

Born in a poor Khatri family, he was a very intelligent child. Everyone was fascinated by his way of seeing the world. His parents were Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta. He studied in a local school in his village and outsmarted every kid studying with him. His love and passion for mankind made him popular among the villagers. He was very creative too. Since his childhood, he has hymned musical poetry all the time. All these hymns are now scribed in Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book of Sikhism .

Moreover, he used to preach the message of peace to people from all communities, particularly the Hindus and the Muslims. His words had a profound impact on his listeners, and they grew in number.

One day, he was heading to Kalibai River. He heard the voice of God and was instructed to spread his words of peace, unity, and love. He then became a saint and started his journey as the first guru. He never considered creed, caste, and other discriminatory words and considered everyone as the same.

He started to attract a lot of disciples when preaching to people wandering aimlessly. He gave lessons of spirituality and life and encouraged everyone to see the world the way he did. He also went to Mecca and taught what he learned to the Muslims too. His followers belonged to different religions, caste, and creeds . He never segregated them, rather looked at them equally.

He also urged everyone to love everyone, and maintain unity and peace. He said that everyone is the child of one God, the Almighty. There is no existence of different gods. We all should worship and follow the teachings of the Almighty. During his journey, he taught and preached about his revelations and spread the knowledge he gained in his life.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji always stressed three main mottos - always helping the poor and needy, always following honest means of living, and always keeping God’s name in one’s heart. He preached that human weaknesses were nothing but our own negative emotions, which can demonise and possess our minds into doing evil tasks. He urged people to never be swayed by anger, greed, and selfishness and instead to practice love and universal brotherhood.

He composed many songs and hymns. His musical poetry became very popular as people could find relevance to their daily lives. All these songs are written in Gurmukhi Language. He renamed Bhai Lehna as Guru Angad and made him his successor. He lived a happy and peaceful life amidst his disciples and died at the age of 70 on 22nd September 1539 . It is said that his body was never found. His disciples just found a pile of flowers underneath the shroud.

On April 15, 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at Pakistan's Ri Bhoi K Talva, which is known as Nankana Sahib, not far from Lahore. He was Mata Tripta's and Kalyan Chand Das Bedi's son. His father worked as a patwari (crop revenue accountant) in the Talwandi village. Mata Sulakkhani was the wife of Guru Nanak Dev.

The first of the ten Sikh Gurus, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, is the founder of the Sikhism religion. He travelled widely, spreading the message that there is only one God, eternal Truth, and resides in every one of God's creations. Guruparab, or Guru Nanak Dev's birthday, is a holiday across the country.

The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was an epitome of goodness and compassion. He was well-recognised for encouraging Muslim and Hindu groups to work together to end communal strife and to practise peace, love, and fraternity. 3 Teachings Of Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's followers were asked to adhere to his three basic teachings, which he notably recorded. All Sikhs are expected to live under these fundamental teachings of Sikhism:-

First, one should always whisper the name of God, regardless of what they are doing. This is known as "Naam Japna." Then and only then can one fully achieve God.

The second principle is "Kirat Karo," which means to depend on a natural source of income and resist all types of temptation.

The third teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji is “Vaand Chakkhna”, which means that one should share with others whatever God has given them and help those in need.

Gurpurab is a big day for the Sikh community. On this day, they commemorate the birth of each of Sikhism's ten gurus. Sikhs worldwide participate in charitable deeds and acts of brotherhood on this day to honour the teachings and ideals of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

In the Lahore district of the Delhi Sultanate, Nanak was born on April 15, 1469, in the village of Ri Bhoi K Talva (present-day Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan). However, one version claims that he was born in the Indian month of Kartik, or November, known in Punjabi as Khattak.

He was going to the Kalibai River one day. God spoke to him, telling him to preach his messages of love, peace, and harmony. After he attained sainthood and began his mission as the first guru, he never gave any thought to caste, creed, or other labels for discrimination and saw everyone as equal.

When he began preaching lost wanderers, Guru Nanak drew a large following. He urged everyone to view the world as he did and offered teachings on spirituality and life. He also travelled to Mecca, where shared his learnings with Muslims. His adherents came from a variety of castes, creeds, and religions. He never separated them into groups; instead, he treated everyone equally.

Final Years

Guru Nanak moved to Kartarpur when he was about 55 years old and remained there until his demise in September 1539. He made brief excursions during this time to the Sufi centres in Pakpattan and Multan and the Nath Yogi Centre in Achal. Although it is difficult to quantify their number based on the historical data available, Nanak had a massive following in the Punjab region by the time of his death.

Bhai Lehna was renamed Guru Angad, which means "one's own" or "part of you," by Guru Nanak when he selected him to succeed him as the Guru. On September 22, 1539, in Kartarpur, Guru Nanak passed away at 70, not long after announcing his successor.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first of the Ten Sikh Gurus whose birth anniversary is celebrated as ‘Gurpurab’ which is regarded as the most auspicious day for Sikhs all over the world. This holy saint was born when evil was prevailing at its peak in the world that required a savior. After Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth, the darkness of ignorance was dispelled and replaced with the light of knowledge. He dispelled the darkness and lit up the world.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birth and His Childhood

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1469 at Talwandi Raibhoye in District Sheikhupura which is in Pakistan presently. This pious place is known as Nankana Sahib. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father was Mehta Kaliyan Ji more popularly known as Mehta Kalu while his mother was Tripta; his sister was Bebe Nanki. His Birth Anniversary is observed every year on Full Moon Day in Kartik (November) as per the Sikh Calendar. Many learned people believe that Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 20 October 1469.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Education

At the tender age of seven Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was sent to a learned man Pandha for his education and learning. His teacher was highly impressed with his sound knowledge of ethics and spirituality. As a student Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was obedient and spiritual. Besides learning Persian and Sanskrit skilfully Guru Ji also acquired the knowledge of Mathematics.

An incident of Sachha Sauda

After the Divine Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji had completed his studies his father gave him twenty rupees and asking him to make a wise investment in establishing a good business sent him to the city.On the way Guru ji came across two saints(Sadhus) who were famished as they had not eaten a crumb for a long period of time. Thereafter, he returned home which angered his father. According to Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji it was the wisest investment (Sachha Sauda) to feed the two hunger stricken saints. His divinity was beyond the comprehension of the ordinary.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Service

Guru Ji’s mind and heart were far away from worldly and material pleasures so he could not work for materialistic gains. He was therefore sent to Sultanpur to his sister, Bibi Nanki’s house where he was appointed at Nawab Daulat Khan’s warehouse. Here too Guru Ji helped the poor and

the needy by generously distributing the grains to them free of cost. Somehow the Nawab learned about it all and he immediately went to look up the accounts but found everything in perfect order. After this incident occurred Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji withdrew from this job.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Enlightenment

In Sultanpur Lodhi, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to meditate on the bank f the river Bein. One day He went to bathe in the same river but for three days He remained underwater. When He emerged from the river after three days He had attained Enlightenment. Thereafter, He went on a world tour with a mission to serve humanity.

Guru Ji’s father was highly perturbed to see his son (Guru Ji) least interested in worldly or materialistic gains so he arranged for Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s wedlock with Bibi Sulakhani but all His attention was focused on Spirituality and the Divine. When Guru Ji meditated His cattle would graze in somebody’s fields and destroy their crops and consequently, Guru Ji’s father would get complaints from people which disturbed him(his father a great deal. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was blessed with two sons – Shree Chand and Lakshmi Das.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Travels or Divine Journeys or His Four Udasis

Guru Ji’s long travels in East, West, North, and South are known as Four Udasis (which include holy text based on his experiences); he visited local religious centers and interacted with priests, Seers, pirs, and other scholars ( the holy people associated with different religions in different regions of India) and professed His newfound path.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Enlightened wrongdoers

Guru Ji enlightened some wrongdoers bringing them on the path of righteousness thereby reforming them; these were Malik Bhago, Sajjan Thug, and many others. Kirat Karo or Work Hard and Honestly, Naam Japo or Always Remember God, and Wannd Chhako or Share With The Needy was the Holy Sermon of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Ji also reformed society by guiding and leading people to the path of righteousness asking them to give up their wrong ways of living.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a great poet and musician too; He composed nineteen ‘Ragas’ his holy Gurbani which has been incorporated in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji the Holy Scripture and Last Guru among the ten Sikh Gurus. His followers cherish Gurus ‘Bani’ to date.

Guru Nanak was a born revolutionary. He revolted against the established religious practices at a very young age. At the age of nine, the young Nanak refused to wear the sacred thread (janeau) which was an affront to the family and the Hindu clergy called to perform the ritual. Nanak surprised everyone present by his logical reasoning, "What is the use of wearing this cotton thread if it is not made of mercy, contentment, continence and truth, and will not last till the end". Guru Nanak's advent (1469-1539) is an epoch-making singular event in the recorded history of the world. His unique, revolutionary and liberating philosophy of universal humanism-liberty, love, respect, justice and equality, is relevant for all times and applicable for all. Guru Nanak wanted to raise the conscience of Indian society by his exhortations to live a life of honour and dignity without making any compromise with the diktats of rulers

In this article, the latter half of the life of Guru Nanak is described. Missionary Travels: Guru Nanak was not content to remain a mystic. He undertook9-11 four long travels, called udasis, to spread his message far and wide, and to share his spiritual experiences with others. Bhai Mardana always accompanied the Guru during the missionary tours. During the four travels, Guru Nanak visited different religious places. He went to Kurukshetra, Haridwar, Joshi Math, Ratha Sahib, Gorakh Matta (Nanak Matta), Audhya, Prayag, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna, Dhubri and Gauhati in Assam, Dacca, Puri, Cuttack, Rameshwaram, Ceylon, Bidar, Broach, Somnath, Dwarka, Junagarh, Ujjain, Ajmer, Mathura, Pakpattan, Talwandi, Lahore, Sultanpur, Bilaspur, Rawalsar, Jawalaji, Spiti Vally, Tibet, Ladakh, Kargil, Amarnath, Srinagar and Baramula. Guru Nanak also paid a visit to Muslim holy places. He went to Mecca, Medina, Baghdad via Multan, Peshawar Sakhar, Son Miani, Hinglaj etc. Some accounts say that Guru Sahib reached Mecca by sea-route. He also visited Syra, Turkey and Tehran (Iran). From Tehran, he set out on the caravan route and covered Kabul, Kandhar and Jalalabad. The aim of his tours was to awaken the people, to realize the truth about God and his creation. He established a network of preaching centers of his philosophy, which were called “Manjis”. He appointed able and committed followers as their in-charges. The basic tenets of Guru Nanak's philosophy was willfully conceived by people from all walks of life. Thus the seeds of Sikhism were sown all over India and abroad in a well-planned manner.

When was Guru Nanak Dev Born?

The date of Gurpurab or the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji changes from year to year. Followers mark the day according to a Lunar calendar. Since Diwali falls on the fifteenth day of this Karthik month, Guru Nanak Jayanti falls fifteen days after Diwali on the occasion of Karthik Purnima. On 2021, Guru Nanak Dev’s birthday will fall on 19 November.

History of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at Nankana Sahib in 1469. This village exists near Lahore, Pakistan. His birth was an auspicious occasion and viewed as a mark of divinity. He shares his birthday with another auspicious occasion of Karthik Purnima.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born to Hindu parents and started school at 7. Guru Nanak travelled around the world with his companion Bhai Mardana. They travelled on foot to Manipur, Rome, Bengal, Kashmir, Mecca and Tibet.
His son Sri Chand was the founder of the Udasi religion. Guru Nanak Dev Ji died when he was 70 at Kartarpur on 22 September 1539.

Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Dev Ji believed that a person could genuinely connect with God only through prayer and not sacrifice. Therefore, he did not like religions that practised sacrifice. All Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings are collected in the form of a book known as the Guru Granth Sahib. His disciples have gathered all his teachings in that book.

They regard the book as the source of all their knowledge and the final authority on the Sikh religion. There is no other book that has achieved such status. Some of the teachings are:

The creator of the universe was one also known as Ik Onkar.
There are further teachings on selfless service, humanity, social justice, and prosperity for all.
One can only chant the name of God by his grace.
Sharing with others what God has given you.
Making an honest living.
Speak the truth without any fear.
The Love of God is supreme.

Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations

The celebrations for this festival begin 2 days before the occasion in the Gurudwaras. A recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib takes place for 2 days non-stop. It is called Akhand Path.
A day before this celebration, communities organise a procession known as Nagar Kirtan.
5 men lead this procession, carrying a triangular flag known as Nishan Sahib. This procession also carries the Guru Granth Sahib along with songs, playing musical instruments and displaying martial arts skills.

Dear Guru Nanak: English Poetry – Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the creator of Sikhism , and the first of the ten Sikh Guru’s. The last Guru said that there would be no more Gurus after him and Sikhs would be taught by the Sikh holy book, which is called Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The word “Guru” means “teacher” in many Indian languages.

His main teaching to the world was written down to be “devotion of thought and having good actions as the first of our jobs”.

Guru Nanak was born in Nankana Sahib, in Punjab . This is now part of Pakistan.

When Guru Nanak was a child he refused the upanayana (holy thread) to initiate him into the Hindu religion. Later in his life he married Mata Sulakhani with whom he had two sons. They were called Sri Chand and Lakshmi Das. According to the Sikh religion, one day he was bathing in the river and god took him up to heaven. His family members were very worried as they had thought he died. After three days he returned with the message of god. He gave up his job to spread the message on how to be a good person.

He died in Kartarpur.
