But writing a 1000-word essay that’s interesting and meaningful may take more than that. Formatting requirements (MLA) and punctuation-loving professors can make toughen things up.

In our blog, we will explore how to write a 1000-word essay. After covering a few engaging and relevant topics, we’ll jump right into the essay structure. Make sure to stick around for helpful tips at the end. As always, EssayPro — essay service — is here if you need any extra help. Happy writing!

What if I Can't Come up With 1000 words?

The best tip that will shed light in the dark is writing in a non-stop regime. Just start writing without thinking about any word limit. Of course, it seems much more time-consuming and complicated. Nevertheless, this technique will let you understand and determine any gaps in your writing and then fix them in the shorter version of your draft.

Don’t panic if it ends up more than 2000+ words or more. Once you are done with the writing, read it several times, and highlight parts that you believe are worth attention. Then exclude all parts of the text that you think are unnecessary. Next step will be combining, polishing up and connecting them together. Include transitions between paragraphs to make sure that everything flows smoothly.

Useful Tips for Editing and Productivity

How to Write a 1000 Word Essay

The most important parts of writing an essay are organizing and editing. Writing is barely half of the work. We want to share some pro tips to save time writing and make your essay genuinely outstanding.

  • Write an Outline first: Most of the time, a 1000-word essay is an in-class assignment. Scribble an outline on a separate sheet of paper to keep you focused when writing. Essay outlines aren’t made for your professor, and they’re made for you. Without an outline, you cannot see the logical structure of your essay and the progression of your arguments.
  • Write an Introduction last: Starting an essay can be frustratingly hard, and most writers know this. A general rule of thumb is to write the introduction last. An essay introduction sets the tone and introduces the writer’s main arguments. After writing the whole chunk of your paper, you’ll know all your main points and the tone of your writing. Therefore it is best to leave it for last.
  • Proofread Twice before submitting: If your 1000-word essay is an in-class assignment, proofread it. Grammar and logic errors won’t be tolerated by your tutor, besides it will only take a minute. Rewriting the whole paper in class is impossible. Therefore proofreading is the only quality-check you get. If your essay is not an in-class assignment, you have many more opportunities to make it good by proofreading.
  • Use Apps for Proofreading: If your 1000-word essay is a homework assignment, proofread it with apps like Hemingway or Grammarly. They will find errors which you may have easily missed. Additionally, if you wish to upgrade your word choice, use sites like Dictionary.com and Thesaurus for synonyms and words with similar meaning.
  • Ask a Friend or EssayPro for Help: Never be shy to ask a friend or us to read your essay and tell you if it makes sense. EssayPro is service that provides you help with dissertation and it can come in handy if you need help with any type of paper works. Each idea must be explored sufficiently, with room for introducing counterarguments and rebuttals, if necessary.

1000-Word Essay Structure

Regardless of the type of essay , there is a universal outline you should follow when crafting your 1000-word paper. It may differ slightly depending on specific requirements and instructions, but the overall structure of an essay remains the same.

The basic 1000 essay structure includes an introduction, body paragraphs (typically 4-6 in this case), and conclusion. Each section implements a distinct goal:

  • Introduction: Introduces your topic and presents an argument or thesis statement.
  • Body paragraphs: Break down the main idea into multiple points and provide evidence to support them.
  • Conclusion: Rounds off the critical points and offers key takeaways.

When writing a one thousand word essay, you should stick to the 70-30 rule. This means that the introduction and conclusion should take up around 30% of the total word count, while a body section should comprise 70%.

Now that you are familiar with the major parts of a 1000 word essay outline, let’s discuss how many words and what information each section contains.

Introduction (~100-150 Words)

The introduction of your 1000 word essay should focus on providing background information needed to understand the main point of your paper. This section should be about 10-15% of the total word count, which equals 100-150 words for a 1000 word essay.

Your opening paragraph should fulfill the following tasks:

  • Hook the audience with facts, stats or an interesting story
  • Reveal the topic’s background
  • Present your thesis statement.

Body Part (~700-750 Words)

Each body paragraph should focus on a single point and provide evidence to support it. Aim for 3-5 sentences per paragraph, totaling 3-4 body paragraphs or 700-750 words. Here’re the things you should accomplish within your body paragraphs:

  • Open each body paragraph with a topic sentence
  • Supply each argument with important evidence and examples
  • Tie the paragraphs together with logical connections.

As you write a 1000 word essay, go from the weakest argument to the strongest one.

Conclusion (~100-150 Words)

Your conclusion should restate your thesis and wrap up the argument you’ve been making throughout your 1000 word essay. Aim for 100-150 words, which is about 10-15% of the total word count.

Conclusion should accomplish the following goals:

  • Restate your thesis statement
  • Remind the audience about your main points
  • Leave your audience with a thought-provoking idea.

Your thesis will guide your writing process, so make sure it’s specific and clear. At this stage, you may come up with a draft version of your statement. You can always revise it later on, if necessary.

4. Prepare an Outline with Approximate Word Count

You won’t be able to sort out your thoughts without an explicit plan. That’s where you need to create a schematic outline for essay shaping all the points you want to mention. Think about what you already know about the subject and carry out extra research if necessary. Allocate an estimated word count for every part, ensuring that each argument is given enough space.

Don’t expect to make it flawless. This is a preparatory step and you can always adjust the structure and reorganize your ideas according to the order of importance.

5. Write a 1000 Word Essay Using a Plan

Now, all that is left to do is to write your 1000 word essay. Use a plan that you have prepared beforehand to start working on the first version of your paper – a rough draft . Focus on developing your major points you’ve indicated in the outline. Make sure you stick to the allotted word count.

Start by  writing an introduction. Briefly present your topic and thesis statement. Then, approach each aspect and provide evidence to support your arguments in the body section of your essay. In the end, write a conclusion of your 1000 word essay that wraps all your points.

6. Reference Your Sources

When writing 1000 word essays, it’s important to use enough sources (around 7-10). This will demonstrate that you have conducted an in-depth investigation and your writing is driven by credible resources. Don’t forget to cite them accordingly every time you quote or paraphrase someone’s ideas. Depending on the format, you should include either in-text citations or footnotes in the body. The most common paper styles are APA , MLA , Chicago and Harvard , so double check which one is required.

7. Proofread and Polish

Once you have written your 1000 word essay, you’re not done yet. Make sure to review your piece one last time and look for any typos, grammar or punctuation mistakes. You can also ask a friend or parent to proofread it and spot the areas that need improvement. This way, you will receive some valuable feedback.

1000 Word Essay Format

When writing a 1000 word essay, you should keep in mind that it follows the same structure as any other academic paper. All essays should include an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. Furthermore, depending on the format (MLA, APA, Chicago), your paper may also include a title page or reference list.

Is It Important to Stick to a 1000 Word Count?

There may be situations when you can’t achieve the right amount of words and just leave your paper as is. However, adhering to a 1000-word count is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates your ability to follow your instructor’s guidelines. Secondly, you will be prompted to communicate your ideas concisely, yet, efficiently.

While small deviations of a few words are generally acceptable, make a conscious effort to stay as close to the 1000-word count as possible. Exceeding the word count may result in a lack of focus. Meanwhile, falling short may indicate incomplete analysis or insufficient supporting evidence. In either case, it reflects a failure to meet the requirements and may negatively impact your grade.

Tips for Writing a 1000 Words Essay

If you feel that creating 1000 word essays is too overwhelming, here are some tips to help you get through this task:

  • Manage your time. Consider how much time you afford to dedicate for each stage of the writing process, namely research, outlining, writing, editing, and proofreading. Dividing it into smaller chunks will make it more achievable.
  • Create a distraction-free environment. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can concentrate on your writing without interruptions.
  • Build an outline. This will help you organize your ideas and order them logically.
  • Keep balance. Stick to your main topic and avoid going off on tangents. Make sure every paragraph remains on point.
  • Take notes. Use a dedicated notebook, digital note-taking app, or software to keep your notes in one place. Create separate sections or pages for different topics or sources to maintain organization.

Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a 1000 Word Essay

Before you begin writing a 1000-word essay, be aware of common mistakes that can hinder the quality of your work. Let’s go through the typical ones:

  • Going over the word count. Straying significantly beyond the word limit can lead to a lack of focus.
  • Insufficient proof. Making unsupported claims or assertions without providing evidence or examples weakens your arguments.
  • Writing irrelevant content. Including fluff, such as repetitive statements, excessive examples, or unrelated information is unacceptable.
  • Lack of own ideas and thoughts. An essay, independently of its type, is a place where the author should present their own opinions concerning the subject.
  • Overreliance on a single source. Relying solely on one source or perspective can result in a biased analysis. Make sure to gather information from multiple reputable sources and consider different viewpoints to present a well-rounded argument.

  • Choose a manageable topic

Don't try to write about a topic that is too broad or complex. Instead, choose something that you are familiar with and that you can easily research.

  • Start with the body of the essay

Once you have chosen a topic, start writing the body of the essay first. This will help you to develop a strong argument and provide a good outline for the essay.

  • Choose a concise title

Choosing a title can be difficult, but it's important that you choose one before writing your essay. Try choosing an attention-grabbing title from which you can logically develop an interesting, informative, and engaging essay.

  • Use the active voice and avoid clichés and trite expressions

Although it's tempting to use a thesaurus to find fancy words, it's best to use them sparingly. The goal of a 1000 word essay is to be clear and concise, not to use flowery language for the sake of it.

  • Read your essay out loud

Reading your essay out loud can help you to catch errors and awkward phrasing. It can also help you to make sure that your argument makes sense from beginning to end.

  • Take a break

Sometimes, you might be unsure about how to approach your essay or where to start. In these situations, it can help to take a break from the writing for a few minutes and come back to it later with fresh eyes.

  • “The practice of love offers no place of safety. We risk loss, hurt, pain. We risk being acted upon by forces outside our control.” (bell hooks, All About Love )

Step 1

  • 2 “I’ve never felt so cared for by anyone before. I feel like you see parts of me nobody else does, including myself. I’ve never felt so seen.”
  • 3 “I hope you realize how special you are. I’ve never met anyone quite like you before. Nobody has ever been so sweet, thoughtful, and compassionate, quirky, hilarious, and creative. You’re one in a million.”
  • 4 “I’m so grateful the universe brought you into my life. I don’t know what I was doing before I met you, but I realize now I never really knew what happiness was before I fell for you. I was just sleepwalking.”
  • 5 “You’re just the most amazing person. I’m blown away by you each and every day. Your sense of humor, your wisdom, your kindness. I fall asleep thinking of you, I dream about you every night, and each morning I wake up with you on my mind.”
  • 6 “I just wanted to tell you you’re fantastic, in case nobody else has done that today. Someone should tell you every day how wonderful you are—preferably me. I want to spend the rest of my life telling you how incredible you are.”

Step 1

  • 2 “Jeff, I can’t stay silent on this anymore: I absolutely adore you. You’re the most amazing guy I’ve ever met, and I just had to tell you that. I don’t know if you feel the same, and I totally get it if you’re not on the same page, but I had to try.”
  • 3 “Hey Kazuo, I know we’ve been texting basically nonstop the last few weeks, and I just have to tell you: I’m crazy about you. I never want to stop talking to you, and I’d love to go out sometime and see where this goes.”
  • 4 “Beth, I’m in love with you. I’ve never known anyone like you, and I think we’d make a great pair. I’d love to take you to dinner this weekend—what do you say?”
  • 5 “Cards on the table: I’m super into you. I’m so into you it’s not even funny. I know we’ve been joking around a lot the last week or 2, and it’s been so much fun, but it’s time to get serious: I’m in love with you.”
  • 6 “Every minute I spend away from you is agony. Everything I do, I do thinking about you. The last month of talking to you has convinced me we belong together. The thought of not being with you—I can’t breathe. I don’t know if you feel the same way, but if you do, it’ll make me happier than I’ve ever been in my life.”

Step 1 Tailor your text to your crush’s experience, if possible.

  • Customizing your text to reflect your crush’s mood, personality, daily schedule, upcoming plans, or life experience will show them you’re paying attention to them—a subtle way to show you care for them that they’re sure to appreciate!

Step 2 Keep your message surface-level if you don't know them well.

  • Start with a cheerful, lowkey good morning text instead that makes it clear you like them, but that doesn’t come on too strongly.
  • Dole out sincere but lighthearted compliments , or grab their attention by letting them know you’re thinking about them. Maybe include a meme you think they’ll love.

Step 3 Get a little more vulnerable if you’ve been talking for a while.

  • A sincere text to let them know how much joy and peace they bring to your life is sure to make them smile —and draw them closer to you. [2] X Research source
  • If you haven’t shared your true feelings with your crush yet, a text or DM can be a great way to tell them you love them without the pressure of a face-to-face confession.
  • When confessing your feelings, you can play it cool and practical and let them know you’d like to try going out on a date, or lay your feelings out on the table and tell them you’re head-over-heels in love. Regardless, be open and sincere—and then leave the ball in their court.

How to Cuddle with Your Partner And Spice up Your Romantic Life

It's important to express your feelings to your crush. But before you make the big confession, start by letting them know all the things you like about them. Discuss your feelings for them, their qualities, and the reasons you adore them. After all, everyone can do it with a little love and appreciation!

  • I just wanted to let you know that ever since I first saw you, my heart has been racing. Your presence brings warmth to my soul and makes my day brighter! With the infectious energy and happiness you bring along, I can never have a dull moment. Everything feels right with you!
  • When we talk, time seems to fly. We spend hours engrossed in our talks and discussions without even realizing it. I love how our conversations flow effortlessly, and how we can be ourselves around each other.
  • You make my heart skip a beat with just a smile. Your laughter is music to my ears, and your eyes hold a depth that captivates me . Being around you feels like a dream come true because I never imagined that I would find someone so right for me.
  • Your kindness and compassion amaze me. You have a heart of gold, and you never forget to show your neighbors and friends that you care! You go out of your way to do the best for others, and that’s truly inspiring. You are in my life, and I couldn’t be happier about that.
  • My heart beats faster every time your name appears on my phone. Your messages make me feel unique and brighten my day. Even when we are together in silence, everything feels right and nothing feels awkward. The comfortable silence we share is what has reassured me that you’re the one for me! However, I do always cherish our conversations and look forward to each one.
  • The way you pay attention to all the seemingly irrelevant little things that matter to me is sweet. Whether it's remembering my favorite book or surprising me with my favorite snack, you always make me feel valued and loved.
  • Your presence fills my heart with warmth and joy. Your presence makes me smile and blush like no one else. Your presence makes me feel like I can take on any challenge because of your immense belief in me! You’re the only person who has brightened my life like never before and given me a new take on things!
  • You have a talent for making everything look its best. Whether it's a casual stroll through the park or a thoughtful conversation over coffee, I value the times we share. You make even the ordinary moments extraordinary with your presence.
  • You are my pillar of strength, my confidante, and my strongest advocate. As you support me and believe in me even when I don’t believe in myself, you inspire me to be the best version of myself. I appreciate you being by my side so much.
  • Without you, I am unable to envision my life, because you’ve become such an integral and important part of it. No part of my day passes without me thinking about you. From the moment I wake up, to the second my head hits the bed at night, you're constantly running through my thoughts! I don’t know what I’d do without you.
  • Your smile is contagious, and it lights up my day. Your hugs feel like home, and I crave the warmth of your embrace. You have a way of making everything better with your presence.
  • I love how we can be ourselves around each other, without any pretense or judgment. You help me to feel liked and accepted for who I am, and I hope I make you feel the same way. You’ve made me realize I’m so much more than my flaws; I cannot let them define me. I have to take them in my stride and wear them as a badge! You've taught me to love my imperfections and I cannot be more grateful!
  • Your love has touched me in ways I can't describe. It has opened up my heart and made me vulnerable in the most beautiful way. I cherish the moments we've shared and look forward to a lifetime of more.
  • In the best way conceivable, you make my palms sweat and my heart race. Every time we're close, your touch makes me tremble, and I get a surge of joy. You have a way of bringing life to me, making me feel recharged as if I can take on the world, and no problem is bigger than me!
  • You are my sunshine on the cloudiest days. Even when I'm having a bad day, your brightness and energy make me feel better. You know exactly what I need to feel better and know how to improve my mood with the right words and actions. I appreciate your affection and constant support.
  • My life is richer and more significant because of you. You have shown me what it truly means to love and be loved, and I will always be grateful for the joy you bring into my life.
  • I adore how we can sit quietly together and it never feels weird. I feel pleased and at peace just by being in each other's presence. • You are my refuge. You are my closest and most trusted buddy. I can open up to you about my deepest worries, hopes, and dreams without worrying about criticism. You listen with patience, empathy, and understanding, and I feel truly seen and heard by you. You are my rock, and I cherish the bond we share.

  • The most romantic sensation in the world is falling in love with you. You fill my heart with so many feelings, and I adore you more and more every day. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have you in my life, and I will treasure our relationship forever.

If you're ready to take that next big step, there's no better way to do it than via some cute and genuine words for your crush. Confessing your feelings will make you feel instantly lighter and leave you with no regrets! If you are sure about your feelings for the person, don't worry and take the leap!

  • I just couldn't wait any longer, but I simply had to share this with you. I have to confess that I just have a huge crush on you. I can't help but have butterflies in my tummy when I'm around you since your grin makes my day better.
  • From your generosity to your sense of humor, there are a lot of qualities about you that I admire. From being kind and patient to being passionately driven, you embody the best qualities that a person should have! It's almost natural that I feel these emotions toward you because of how your personality is built.
  • I hope you are doing well! I wanted to let you know that you're someone special to me. My day is instantly brighter by your presence, and I can't stop thinking about the times we spent together. I hope you understand what I’m trying to convey because I’m a little shy to put it into words! However, I hope you also feel something towards me and we can explore it further!
  • I've had trouble coming up with the perfect words for this situation, but I've just decided to go ahead and say what I feel frankly. I have been witnessing this unsaid chemistry between us for so long, and I just wanted to know if there’s something more.
  • I guess you can already tell what's coming. This message is to let you know that I'm crushing on you. Your charm is fascinating, and your smile is contagious. I had to let you know that I can't help but feel attracted to you.
  • I wanted to let you know that I do think you're extremely cute. Your humor and our banter have captured my attention, and I can't help but feel this way. I just wanted to express my emotions to you honestly, and hope you feel similarly.
  • Hey, this is a confession message to tell you that I'm crushing on you! From afar, I've admired you for a really long time, and your personality and charisma have always drawn me closer. I was unable to suppress my emotions any longer and had to put this out there!
  • I have a crush on you, which could come as a surprise. I hope it's okay if I express my emotions to you, and I truly hope you feel some way about me as well. I would love to pursue something with you and see where things go because I truly believe we can build something special together.
  • Hey there. I've actually wanted to let you know for a while that I have a crush on you. I love how you make me feel when we talk, and the way you smile at me is contagious. You mean a lot to me, so I wanted to be open with you!
  • I wanted to gather up the guts to confess my crush on you. I love being in your company, and all the memories we've made are super special to me. I genuinely appreciate you and feel like we have something great going on.
  • I simply wanted to text you to let you know that I think you're cute. Everything I've ever felt before is completely different from how others make me feel. You must have known this was going to happen because I've had a crush on you for a very long time. Time and again, I’ve tried to make it obvious with my actions, but I don’t think I’ve been successful in putting the same across! If you share the same sentiments as me, we may create something truly great.
  • My feelings for you are very sincere. I've been wondering how it would feel if we were dating for a really long time. You're exactly the kind of person I can see myself dating. I have the biggest crush on you and hope we can take things forward,
  • You are my best friend, my closest confidant, and I hope that one day we will be romantically involved! I hope you feel the same way about me as I do about you because I have a crush on you. I've wanted to let you know this for a time, but I haven't found the appropriate opportunity.
  • You are really special to me, and I really do care about you. I like spending time with you, and I love how you are! I've been holding onto these feelings for so long because I'm afraid of what might happen, but I hope things really do change.
  • I hope you feel the same way about me since I'm crushing on you. I know you probably know about this since I have made it obvious with my actions and words multiple times but I thought it was high time, I put it into words! However, having said that I hope my emotions won't get in the way of our friendship if you don't feel the same way.
  • I am writing this paragraph to you with all the honesty in my heart. I've been meaning to tell you for a while that I love the way you make me feel, and I have a crush on you. Every moment we spend together is special, and I hope we can make many more memories together!
  • It should come as no surprise that I have a crush on you because you possess all the characteristics I had envisaged in a significant partner. You are the one person who has ever supported me, and I hope that continues.
  • You are my missing puzzle piece and the other half of who I am. Like no one else, you cheer me up, wipe away my tears, and make me smile. This is my way of saying that I adore you and that I hope you feel the same way!
  • I've wanted to let you know for a very long time that I feel something for you. I genuinely want to try it because I sense something amazing in our future.

There's no better feeling than waking up to a sweet message that makes you feel loved! One of the best ways to remind your crush you're thinking about them is by sending some cute paragraphs to your crush to wake them up.!

  • Good morning to the most captivating person I know. Your mere presence can light up a room, and it definitely lights up my day. I hope today brings you all the happiness and excitement that you deserve, and that our paths cross soon so I can see that witness that energy in person.
  • Rise and shine! I hope this message brings the brightest smile to your face. From your contagious laughter to your irresistible charm, you've stolen my heart without even knowing it. Here's to a day filled with endless possibilities, including the chance that I sweep you off your feet!
  • A special good morning for my special person! Waking up to the thought of you makes my mornings extra special. I hope this message sets the tone for a super exciting day ahead. You're the wind beneath my wings and the spring in my step!
  • It's a brand new day, and I can't resist sending you a wish to start your morning! You're the first thing my mind turns to when I wake up, the last thing I think about before I sleep. Here's to a day filled with smiles, laughter, and maybe a little extra sparkle between us.
  • This day wouldn't start right if I didn't take the opportunity to wish you good mornings . You make my heart race and my cheeks blush, and I had to take this chance to let you know that you're on my mind, even though the day has just begun. Wishing you a beautiful day ahead!

1 000 words essay for crush

Essay writing involves more than just writing—it’s a multi-stage process that’s partly an art and partly a science. The good news is that you can use a simple, repeatable method to get consistent results in a predictable timeframe. This article breaks down a reliable approach you can use for any essay question.

Let’s start with the most common question people new to academic writing have:  how long does it take to write an essay?

How long does it take to write 1000 words?

Writing 1000 words should take you between 60 to 90 minutes. But this is only true if you have already done your research and know what you need to write.

If you haven’t prepared well and don’t have a good understanding of your topic, it will take you considerably longer to write 1000 words—at least two or three days. That’s because the actual *writing* part is only one stage of the essay writing process—and it’s not the first stage.  The real work is the preparation you must do before you start writing.

Here is what a complete essay writing process looks like:

  • Stage one:  understanding the question
  • Stage two:  brainstorming initial ideas
  • Stage three:  conducting research
  • Stage four:  outlining an essay plan
  • Stage five:  writing your essay draft
  • Stage six:  editing your essay
  • Stage seven:  formatting for submission

So writing your essay is the fifth out of seven stages. If you try to shortcut the process by starting with the writing stage, you’re in for a world of pain. Let’s look at each step in more detail to understand why skipping stages makes things harder, not easier.

Step one: Understanding the question

Before you write anything, you must first understand the essay question’s scope and purpose. If your tutor has given you the essay’s assessment criteria, review them. This is a cheat sheet that tells you exactly what they’ll be looking for when they mark your essay—and, therefore, exactly what you should include in it—so don’t ignore it.

Pay close attention to the question phrasing and the instruction words it uses (“evaluate”, “discuss”, “review”, etc.). Think about what you are being asked to do (and also what you aren’t being asked to do).

Carefully considering the essay question and assessment criteria in this way will help you focus your research, structure your argument, and write your essay efficiently. It will save you from going down dead ends and doing unnecessary work, so start here before you jump into researching or writing anything.

Step two: brainstorming initial ideas

Jot down your initial ideas about the topic and group them into key themes (you can do this by making lists under different subheadings or by drawing a mind map). This will give you a starting point to help you identify what to research and how to plan your essay. Don’t spend too long on this. You will develop (and possibly reject) these ideas during the following two stages.

Three: conducting research

Once you know how you will approach your essay topic, begin your research. This is the most important (and time-consuming) part of the process. Quality research is the foundation on which strong essays are built. Getting it right will make writing your assignment much easier, so don’t half-ass it.

Start with any sources your tutor recommended. As you read the source material, note down any key themes and talking points you could use in your essay. Then seek out additional sources for the specific information you need to support (or counter) each point.

Using a wide range of sources will help you construct a stronger argument (and gives you a diverse list of references, which is always a bonus). But avoid the trap of doing endless research and getting lost in the weeds—this is a common way people procrastinate to put off the writing stage.

You don’t need to know everything about your topic—just enough to answer the essay question.

You only want to use highly relevant source material. Refer to your list of key themes and initial talking points to keep your research focused and efficient. Skip over anything that isn’t relevant to your core argument. When you make notes on the research you want to use in your essay, write down the source so you can easily find and reference it later.

Done correctly, your discussion points and research notes should form the outline of your essay. This brings us nicely to the next stage.

Step four: outlining your essay plan

Now it’s time to structure your essay draft using bullet points. This will give you a framework on which to hang your argument, making it far easier (and quicker) to write.

Think of your essay plan as the written equivalent of the preliminary sketch an artist does before they start a painting. It allows you to get your thoughts in order and structure your essay to ensure it flows before you get stuck into writing it.

Start by writing a subheading for each theme and/or key discussion point in your essay. Then list the details you will use to expand on each item (such as which referenced pieces of supporting evidence you will include) as bullet points underneath.

Organise your bullet points to form a logically flowing argument. Each item should build on the previous one to lead to a conclusion. Allocate rough word counts to each section and talking point to ensure you have enough source material to hit your word count.

A good working estimate is 200-250 words per discussion point, plus 5-10% of your target word count for your introduction and the same again for your conclusion.

An example 1000 word draft essay plan might look something like this:

  • Introduction:  150 words
  • Discussion point 1:  250 words  (2 references)
  • Supporting point:  200 words  (1 reference)
  • Counter-argument:  250 words  (2 references)
  • Conclusion:  150 words

If you have too many points to stay within your word count, you have the difficult task of deciding what to leave out. This is an excellent problem to have, as it will force you to choose only the best talking points and evidence, which will help you write a strong essay.

If your essay plan shows you will fall short of your word count, you have two choices:

  • Expand on your existing talking points with a deeper, more detailed analysis (which may require more references)
  • Do some further research to find more talking points that round out your discussion

Don’t buffer your word count by going off on tangents and adding irrelevant talking points or examples. A good essay must be tightly focused. Use the outlining process to solve this problem early and make sure you have enough relevant material to write a solid first essay draft.

Get your outline right, and the writing process becomes a simple case of expanding on each bullet point one by one. Tackling your essay in small chunks like this is far more manageable than taking on the whole thing at once. This is where the outlining process pays off—it allows you to write 1000 words in an effortless hour instead of a few frustrating days.

Once you’re happy with your draft essay plan, you can move on to the writing stage.

Step five: writing your essay draft

Your best friend when writing is  momentum .  You don’t want to stop writing to think about what you need to say or to go off and find things out. That’s why you get the research out of the way and make an outline first.

When writing your first essay draft, you should focus on one thing only—getting the ideas out of your head and onto the paper (or, more likely, the screen).

Don’t get hung up on typos, sentence construction, or word count. They are all distractions that will slow you down. Right now, you just want to hit the milestone of completing your first draft from start to finish.

Work through your essay outline, starting a new paragraph for each discussion point. Begin each of these paragraphs with a  topic sentence  that clearly states the point you are about to discuss. Expand on this with further detail and supporting evidence (with references). Finish with a  concluding statement  that explains the significance of the point you’ve just made by linking it back to the essay question.

Do this for each discussion point in your essay outline. Use linking phrases like  “supporting this idea . . .”, “in contrast . . .”,  etc., to make your points flow into one another as you expand on them. This will make your essay more coherent and speed up the editing process.

If you realise you need to look up a specific detail or do some further research to sufficiently expand on a point, don’t stop writing to find the information. Instead, write some unique placeholder text (such as “***” or “jjj”, etc.) to mark the spot so you can easily find and replace it later. Then keep going so you don’t lose momentum.

Expand on all your bullet points until you reach the end. Congratulations, you’ve now finished your first essay draft.

Check the length of your draft. Hopefully, it is close to (or slightly over) your target word count. If so, you now have enough raw material to polish into your final submission. Be happy—you’re almost there.

What if my essay is too short?

If you’re under the required word count, read back through your essay and look for any of the following:

  • Weak arguments you can strengthen with further supporting evidence
  • Sections lacking sufficient depth or detail that could be expanded
  • Gaps in your logic that need filling in with extra information
  • Unbalanced viewpoints that would benefit from additional counter-arguments

Each is an opportunity to increase your wording and improve your essay.

If you used any placeholder text, research the information you need to fill in the blanks, then add it to your essay to complete your first draft.

You can now move on to the editing stage.

Step six: editing your essay

Many people skip this step, but you shouldn’t. Editing is how you turn your raw first draft into a tight, crisp, written argument that is easy to follow and—importantly—mark. Ideally, you should do three rounds of editing:

  • Macro editing:  Read through your essay and sense-check it. Does it answer the question? Is your argument coherent and well-structured? Are there any contradictions or repetition? Is anything missing or irrelevant? Fix this big picture stuff first before worrying about any smaller details. That might mean adding or deleting significant chunks of information or moving paragraphs around to improve your essay’s flow.
  • Copy editing:  Does your essay meet the word count? Is your writing clear and concise? Are your arguments and sentences well-phrased? Make any necessary tweaks to improve your essay’s readability (this will make it easier for your tutor to understand what you’re saying and award you marks.)
  • Proofreading:  Here you’re just looking for nitpicky details and minor mistakes like typos, minor grammatical errors, and missing references you didn’t catch on your previous two rounds of editing.

Give your essay a final read through.  Check it flows well and makes sense. It should move from the introduction to a conclusion with a logical, balanced argument constructed of points that build on one another and are supported by relevant examples.

Refine everything until you’re happy and your essay hits the word count. Now finalise your references and formatting, and you’re done.

Step seven: formatting your essay

Most essay briefs will include formatting specifications covering the preferred text size, line spacing, and referencing style. Adhere to any guidelines you are given.

If you aren’t given any guidelines, you can use these generally accepted formatting conventions :

  • Body text:  10-11pt, with 1.5x line spacing
  • Titles and heading:  24pt
  • Sub-headings:  14pt bold
  • Verbatim quotes:  italicised in speech marks
  • Titles of books, movies, songs, etc.:  italicised, no speech marks
  • Referencing:  Harvard system

Essay planning — there are no shortcuts

If this process seems long-winded and you think you can cut some steps, think again. If you try skipping a stage, you’ll end up merging it with another one. This is actually a slower, more complicated process that ends up being counter-productive.

Look at it like this:  If you skip the research, you won’t know what to write about and will have no references. If you skip the outlining stage, you’ll be trying to figure out how to structure your essay while you’re writing it. You will keep having to stop and figure out what to write next, which kills your momentum.

Writing is the process of putting your thinking onto paper. The main reason people struggle with it is because they’re not sure what they’re trying to say.  Starting with an outline gives you clarity and structure, which makes writing your essay much easier and saves you a ton of time.

The other reason people struggle with writing is because they try to edit as they go.  Don’t do this. It causes you to lose your train of thought and forget what you are about to say, which makes the writing process slow and frustrating.

Though it may not seem so at first glance, working through each stage of this process one by one is actually the quickest and most efficient essay writing method. It also happens to create the best results, so follow it precisely.

Writing your essay draft—time management

Here are some rough estimates for how long it will take to write an assignment if you follow this process. Can you write 3000 words in a day? Yes, but not in one sitting. It’s hard to write more than 1500 words in one go, so we’ve included the number of writing sessions you can expect to need for essays of different lengths.

  • 1000 words:  1-1.5 hours (1-2 sessions)
  • 1500 words:  1.5-2 hours (1-2 sessions)
  • 2000 words:  2 hours (1-3 sessions)
  • 3000 words:  3-4 hours (2-4 sessions)
  • 5000 words:  5-8 hours (3-6 sessions)
  • 10000 words:  10-20 hours (6-15 sessions)

These estimates are just for the writing stage and assume you have done your research and made a solid outline essay plan. The editing stage will require additional time.

Shorter essays will take about as long to edit as they took to write. The editing time for longer essays should be similar to the lower end of the time range for the writing phase (so editing a 5000 word essay would take 4-5 hours).

Following this seven-stage process is the most reliable way to avoid writer’s block and consistently write quality essays. It simplifies the part people often struggle with the most—the writing phase—and compresses it from a matter of days to a few hours.

We’ll leave you with our top tips to help you execute the process efficiently and make the most of your time.

Essay writing—top tips

  • The human brain works in mysterious ways. You may find your best ideas come to you when you’re not actively working on your essay. If this happens, capture them in your phone so you don’t forget them. (Make this style of on-the-go information capture a general habit for any uni work.)
  • Research, writing, and editing all require mental focus. Distraction is your biggest enemy, so turn your phone off and/or put it in another room when you sit down to work on your essay. You’ll work so much faster without it.
  • Your tutor should provide you with the marking criteria for your essay along with the essay question. This tells you exactly what they will be looking for—use it as a cheat sheet to guide your research and essay plan.
  • When you write your essay, start with a single sentence that defines your main argument. This will keep you focused while you write your first draft. Once you’ve done this, move on to the main discussion section and leave writing your introduction and conclusion until the end. What you need to say in these sections will be dictated by what you write in your main discussion, so leave them until last.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of the editing stage —it’s how you make average work good and good work great, making it a good way to pick up extra marks. Get a good night’s sleep between the writing and editing stages and take a break between each round of editing so you see the work with fresh eyes and a clear mind.

Can You Rescue a Writer With 1000 Words ?

Jami Attenberg, author of a new guide for writers, has ambitious creative goals. And she might have just transformed mine.

It’s true, I already write for a living. What little time is not spent putting words on this website is, all too often, spent fantasizing about—or raining insults upon—those same words. But for several years, I’ve also been writing a book. By the time I set it aside in a fit of exhaustion a couple years back, I’d written 100,000 words of that book, a number I’d completely erased from my memory by the time Attenberg joined me on Zoom in December and asked—oh, by the way!—if I was writing a novel.

“Funny that you’d ask that,” I said, then demurred and sputtered and hemorrhaged excuses until I’d resolved to say, “Yes, I am.” Attenberg asked how far I’d made it in the draft. I answered with the first number that sprang to mind: a respectable 30,000 words. I did not intend to lie. Thirty-thousand simply seemed a realistic expectation of my younger self’s output, and I never would have dreamed I’d written 100,000 and forgotten .

Then, Attenberg told me to keep going. That, in essence, is the thesis of 1000 Words itself, a book born of the author’s own creative questing. A newsletter and writing community she launched in 2018 as an accountability practice (under the hashtag #1000WordsofSummer) quickly took on a life of its own as writers signed up to commit 1,000 words to a page every day of the summer. Attenberg—the bestselling author of seven fiction books, including The Middlesteins and All Grown Up , and a memoir—began reaching out to her friends, many of them acclaimed, well-established, and bestselling authors themselves. They contributed letters of encouragement and advice that she disseminated to her newsletter readers, and which she later gathered into this book for a wider audience to appreciate.

There are nuggets of insight in 1000 Words that I’m halfway convinced could rescue me from oblivion, or whatever the novel-drafting equivalent of that wretched limbo might be. But where the book—and Attenberg, by extension—truly triumphs is not through revelatory advice but in simple, earnest insistence: If you want to write, you should. Okay? Good. We’ve agreed. You have permission. Now try. Try again. The words will come if you will them.

I know the dangling carrot of a writing-focused New Year’s resolution is a tempting one, and my first instinct when Attenberg asked after my book was to commit myself to the 1,000 words she recommends...for every day of 2024. (Especially once I’d reopened my Google Doc and discovered a hundred of those thousands blinking back at me. If I could do this without even registering it, surely another, much improved 100,000 wasn’t impossible?)

But what I learned from interviewing Attenberg—a conversation replicated below—was this: It’s not the specific 1,000 words that will rescue a writer from stasis. It’s the belief that those 1,000 words are worth the time, energy, and (let’s be honest) agony it takes to produce them. To create something new is to siphon energy from the other corners of your life, many of which are arguably more important. That’s not an easy exercise to maintain under the best of circumstances, and few writers operate under the best of circumstances. Perhaps that’s why Attenberg insists the practice itself is so precious.

For what it’s worth, I was a fan of Attenberg long before 1000 Words hit shelves this month. But now I can promise—with the encouragement of many authors I’ve never met, and only a faint flutter of arrhythmia—that I’m writing a book.

1000 Words: A Writer's Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All Year Round

1000 Words: A Writer's Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All Year Round

Below, Attenberg discusses how 1000 Words went from hashtag to publication, and what creative “productivity” means in a culture hellbent on hustling.

When did it become clear to you that this accountability project could be—or perhaps already was—its own book?

It was a year ago last summer. And it was definitely not a thing I wanted to do. I thought, I only want to do it if this book’s going to be helpful , if it felt like it needed to exist, because that’s how I feel about any project that I work on. Is it like a living, breathing entity within these pages? So what I did was, I took all the letters that have ever been written [for the #1000Words newsletter] by all the contributors, and I just dumped them into a document and I read them all.

I felt supercharged at the end of it. I was like, Oh . I think not only does it need to be a book, but it made me feel like I could turn it into a book.

So then how did you go about the curatorial process of placing those letters in a particular order in the book?

[The book] is broken into a structure of four seasons; that was really the breakthrough moment for me. So when I started doing this [for the newsletter], and I would ask different authors to contribute their letters for #1000WordsofSummer, not everybody wanted to talk about being generative—because sometimes you’re just not generative, in terms of putting words on the page.

When I looked at all the letters, they told me what the structure was. I saw that it couldn’t just be summer; [the book] had to be something that you could use year-round. And so there became touchstone letters for me: Dantiel Moniz’s letter, it was the first letter that was really like, “I couldn’t do it this year. I had a lot of things going on in my life this year, but I’m giving myself grace.” We need to hear that we’re not always going to be able to be productive, but there are ways that we can take care of ourselves that will make sure that we’ll be productive in the future.

So the letters, sort of, helped me define the shape of [the book]. Then my editor and my agent definitely encouraged me to put my own voice behind it. So I did do that, and it still ended up feeling fresh for me, talking about these kinds of things.

When you were first starting this project—not the book, but #1000Words itself—when did you start reaching out to writers to contribute these letters?

From the get-go. Because I’ve been doing this for so long—my first book came out in 2006—I have met a lot of writers along the way, and I really treasure their friendships. And everyone has their go-to encouraging thing they want to say. So I reached out to some people almost immediately, and Megan Abbott was the first person to just go, “Yeah, here’s a great first easy encouraging little thing, a paragraph or two to tell us all that we can .” I just think that’s when the internet works at its best—and I still believe that it can—is when we stumble into communities with each other.

There’s been a lot of valid backlash against “productivity culture” in our society. But despite the fact that “being productive” is in the subtitle of this book, it zooms in on a different approach, one more geared toward creativity and humanity than economic output. So I’m curious: As you’ve helmed #1000Words, how have you re-conceptualized what so-called “productivity” means to you?

I think it’s like...there’s something in the book where I talk about why I write. And part of it is, yes, this is how I make my living. But also, I need to do it to satisfy myself creatively. It helps me in terms of my mental health issues. It’s how I communicate with the world. There’s so many aspects to why I think writing is important.

And so that is one of the reasons why the focus of this book is not about getting published. There’s some little bit of backdrop to that: Maybe you had a dream of getting published, and so I would like to encourage you to pursue your dream. But [the book] is definitely not about business matters at all. It’s about doing what you need to do in order to make yourself happy and feel fulfilled. Do you love to write? Then I want you to be able to feel like you can write. And actually do it.

I just know that I feel better when I write, and I want people to feel that same way, too.

Do you love to write? Then I want you to be able to feel like you can write. And actually do it.”

I write daily for work, and generally speaking, if I’m writing, I’m having a wonderful time. But there’s this fatigue that does eventually settle in—one that makes even the most exciting ideas more difficult to execute. I recognize that’s a common frustration amongst writers, and goes by a lot of different names. I’ll avoid mentioning the scariest one. How do you energize yourself to write, which, in my mind, is different than inspiring yourself to write?

I’m just trying to think about this, what I do. I mean, I would say definitely reading other people’s books, and when it’s a great book and you get to the end and you’re like, “Wow, they really did it,” it makes me want to really do it. I definitely get inspiration from reading other people’s work, or even going to see a cool movie or something like that, where it just feels like they did justice to the story that they were trying to tell.

“How do you feel the wow?” is what you’re saying. And you’re right, it’s not about getting inspired: Because you can walk down the street and hear a little piece of conversation and get an idea. Just eavesdrop for a while. There’s ideas all around. But you’re not saying that. You’re saying energy . I mean, sometimes I do have to get up and dance around the living room for 15 minutes. It’s like HIIT for your brain.

I would say definitely reading other people’s books: When it’s a great book and you get to the end and you’re like, “Wow, they really did it,” it just makes me want to really do it.

You’ll always find a sentence that you wouldn’t have gotten to if you hadn’t sat down and written it that day. And you write to that sentence and you’re like, “Okay, that’s why I did it.”

Like, “Ah, yeah. Okay. I guess I’ll keep going.”

That beautiful sentence.

That’s one of the things I appreciate about this book: It’s not so much about productivity in that every moment must be fruitful. It’s about making space in your life to do this rich, valuable thing that you might otherwise neglect.

I mean, it’s what I’ve done with my life, for sure. I’ve carved out that life for myself. [Writing] was the thing that made me happiest. After a long time of not feeling good and not knowing why I didn’t feel good, all of a sudden I recognized that I just needed to do this one thing over and over again. It doesn’t solve all your problems. But it helps. It sets you on a path that you can return to again and again.

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Kingston Library Martin Laforse Memorial Scholarship Fund will offer two $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Kingston High School seniors, according to an announcement.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarship can receive an application at the school’s Guidance Office. Applicants are required to submit an essay in 500 words or less, reflecting on how a reading or library experience affected their life.

According to the announcement, scholarships will be awarded based not only on the quality of the essay but on the applicant’s current academic standing, as well as financial need and a letter of recommendation. Scholarship recipients will be announced during an award ceremony at Kingston High in early June.

The scholarship was formed in 2007 after the death of Martin Laforse, a long-time professor and trustee of the Board of Directors at Kingston Library.

Applications are due no later than Friday, April 12.
