   2019 में राष्ट्रपति बनने के बाद, जेलेन्स्की  अपने देश में कुछ अच्छा करने की कोशिश की। क्योंकि उस समय यूक्रेन के पूर्वी इलाके में गृह युद्ध चल रहा था। अलगाववादियों ने यहां पर कब्जा किया हुआ था। जेलेन्स्की ने कोशिश की। यहां पर गृह युद्ध समाप्त हो। इस युद्ध में 14000 से ज्यादा लोग मारे जा चुके थे। इन्होंने समझौता करने का प्रयास किया।

      2014 से सुलग रहा, यह विवाद। अचानक जंग में कैसे बदल गया। दरअसल यूक्रेन ने अलगाववादियों से निपटने के लिए, नई रणनीति बनाई। यूक्रेन ने नाटो से दोस्ती बढ़ाई और अमेरिका की शरण में चला गया। बात तब बिगड़ी, जब यूक्रेन ने नाटो में शामिल होने की तैयारी शुरू कर दी। रूस यही चाहता है कि यूक्रेन नाटो का हिस्सा न बने। इसके पीछे रूस का तर्क है कि यूक्रेन अगर नाटो से जुड़ जाता है। तो रूस पूरी तरह घिर जाएगा। क्योंकि भविष्य में नाटो देशों की मिसाइले, यूक्रेन की धरती पर तैनात की जाएंगी। जो रूस के लिए बड़ी चुनौती साबित हो सकती है।

        रूस चाहता है कि नाटो अपना विस्तार न करें। आखिरकार रूस ने अमेरिका और दूसरे देशों की पाबंदियों की परवाह किए बगैर। 20 फरवरी को यूक्रेन पर हमला बोल दिया। सोवियत संघ के विघटन से पहले यूक्रेन, सोवियत संघ का ही हिस्सा था।  द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध समाप्त होने के बाद, पूरी दुनिया दो धड़ों में बढ़ गई। एक तरफ अमेरिका और दूसरी तरफ सोवियत संघ था। 25 दिसंबर 1991 को सोवियत संघ टूट गया। जिसके 15 अलग-अलग राज्य बने। ये 15 मुल्क, इस प्रकार है।

इसके चलते रूस के राष्ट्रपति पुतिन यूक्रेन की राजधानी खारकीव पर बुरी तरीके से बमबारी कर रहे हैं। लेकिन यूक्रेन के राष्ट्रपति रूस के सैनिकों को मुंहतोड़ जवाब दे रहे हैं और उन्होंने यह ऐलान कर दिया है कि वह रूस के आगे झुकेंगे नहीं और अंत तक वह डटे रहेंगे। यूक्रेन के राष्ट्रपति जेलेंस्की की हिम्मत कि आज दुनिया भर में एक मिसाल बन चुकी हैं लोग उनकी तारीफ करते हुए नहीं थक रहे हैं तो चलिए आज हम जेलेंस्की की बायोग्राफी से आपको रूबरू करवाते हैं। 

वोलोडिमीर जेलेंस्की का जन्म कब और कहा – (When and where was Volodymyr Zelensky born?)

वोलोडिमीर जेलेंस्की का जन्म 25 जनवरी 1978 को क्रिविवि रिह में हुआ था। वहीं इनकी हाइट की बात करें तो इनकी हाइट 5 फुट 7 इंच है।जब इनका जन्म हुआ था उस समय इनका जन्म स्थान सोवियत संघ था लेकिन क्रिवीव रिह को बाद में यूक्रेन में शामिल कर लिया गया था, इनका बचपन मंगोलिया में व्यतीत हुआ था।

वोलोडिमीर जेलेंस्की के पिताजी का ओलेक्सान्द जेलेंस्की है इनके पिताजी प्रोफेसर रह चुके हैं वहीं इनकी माताजी का नाम रिम्मा जेलेंस्की है जो काफी पढ़ी-लिखी हैं और उन्होंने इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई पूरी कर रखी है। आज यदि जेलेंस्की  राष्ट्रपति के पद पर कार्यभार संभाल रहे हैं उसके पीछे उनके माता-पिता का बहुत बड़ा हाथ है क्योंकि वह बचपन से ही उन्हें अच्छे माहौल में शिक्षित कर रहे थे।

 इन्होंने लॉ में डिग्री हासिल की हुई है 2000 में कीव नेशनल इकोनॉमीक यूनिवर्सिटी से हासिल की थी। हालांकि इनकी प्रारंभिक शिक्षा तो मंगोलिया में ही पूरी हुई थी क्योंकि इनका परिवार मंगोलिया में 4 साल के लिए चला गया था।  इसका सबसे बड़ा फायदा उन्हें  यह हुआ कि इन्होंने यूक्रेन और रूस दोनों भाषाओं पर अपनी पकड़ अच्छी तरीके से बना ली थी।

 इन्होंने कानून में अपनी ग्रेजुएशन की थी लेकिन इनकी रूचि कानून में नहीं होने के चलते उन्होंने वहां से अपना रुख मोड़ा क्योंकि इन्हें बचपन से ही कॉमेडी करना और लोगों को इंटरटेनमेंट करना बहुत अच्छा लगता था। उन्होंने 1997 में क्रेवियन टीम से जुड़ने का फैसला लिया और उन्होंने अपना अच्छा प्रदर्शन दिखाते हुए यह फाइनल में प्रवेश कर गए। 

फिल्मी करियर :

 2006 से उन्होंने अपने फिल्मी करियर कि सफलता की नींव रख दी थी और यह धीरे-धीरे इसमें अपना अच्छा प्रदर्शन दिखा रहे थे और 2010 में जेलेंस्की  टीवी के एक सबसे प्रसिद्ध कलाकार में से एक बन चुके थे। 

 उन्होंने 2009 के अंदर “लव इन द बिग सिटी” फिल्म में काम किया था इसमें इन्होंने इगोर  की भूमिका निभाई थी। उन्होंने अपने फिल्मी करियर को 2018 में खत्म कर दिया था इसके बाद उन्होंने फिल्म इंडस्ट्री से अपना नाता तोड़ लिया था। 

 2015 में उनके द्वारा बनाई गई नेटफ्लिक्स के शो  सर्वेंट ऑफ़ द पीपल में उन्होंने एक शिक्षक का रोल निभाया था जिसको लोगों ने खूब पसंद किया था उसके बाद उनकी पॉपुलर की चरम सीमा पर बन गई थी। 

टीवी सीरियल करियर :

 इन्होंने खुद के पहले टीवी सीरियल ताती झ झिरकामी  से शुरुआत की थी उन्होंने वसील पेत्रोवेच की भूमिका निभाई थी। उन्होंने फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के विराम के साथ ही टीवी सीरियल से ही अपनी दुरी बना ली थी। इन्होंने अंतिम  जिस टीवी सीरियल में काम किया इसका नाम सवाती था। 

पॉलिटिकल करियर :

 जब उन्होंने यह देखा कि देश में राजनेता के प्रति लोगों का विश्वास टूट चुका है और लोगों का सरकार से विश्वास उठ गया है उन्होंने पॉलिटिकल में अपना करियर आजमाने की सोची।सर्वेंट ऑफ़ द पीपल को  2018 में टीवी प्रोडक्शन कंपनी क्वार्टल 95 द्वारा बनाया गया। 

 इसके बाद जेलेंस्की ने एकतरफा जीत के लिए सोशल मीडिया के माध्यम से प्रचार प्रसार करना शुरू कर दिया उन्होंने ज्यादा से ज्यादा लोगों को सोशल मीडिया के द्वारा अपनी तरफ आकर्षित किया इसका नतीजा यह हुआ कि 7 जून 2019 के चुनाव में उन्होंने एकतरफा जीत हासिल कर ली। उन्होंने उस समय के राष्ट्रपति को मात देते हुए अपनी जीत का परचम लहराया।

वोलोडिमीर जेलेंस्की के नेतृत्व में यूक्रेन के लोगों और सेना में एक जोश भर दिया है क्योंकि वह अपनी सेना के साथ मिलकर काम कर रहे हैं उन्होंने बहुत से वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर शेयर किए हैं जिनमें वह लोगों में जोश भरते हुए दिखाई दे रहे हैं और उनके कुछ फोटो हैं जिनमें वह सेना के भेष में नजर आ रहे हैं और उनके साथ मिलकर काम कर रहे है। 

 उन्होंने वीडियो कॉन्फ्रेंसिंग के द्वारा EU से बातचीत की थी जिसमें वहां पर मौजूद सभी लोगों ने उनकी भावुक बातों को सुनकर तालिया भी बजाई थी और EU की सदस्यता में यूक्रेन को शामिल करने में जो वोटिंग की गई थी लगभग सभी लोग उनके समर्थन में थे। 

 इनकी हिम्मत की तारीफ अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति जो बाइडन ने भी कि और उन्होंने यूक्रेन को 100 करोड़ अमेरिकन डॉलर देने का वादा किया और भी बहुत से यूरोपियन देश यूक्रेन का साथ दे रहे हैं यह सब जेलेंस्की  की के राष्ट्रवादी नेतृत्व की वजह से ही संभव हो पाया है।

An unlikely hero.

We look at Volodymyr Zelensky’s rise.

National heroes sometimes have humble political origins.

Abraham Lincoln was arguably the country’s least-qualified president — a former one-term member of Congress — at the time that he took office. Winston Churchill looked like a washed-up politician when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. And Volodymyr Zelensky did not seem like an international symbol of courage when Russia began threatening to invade Ukraine in recent months.

In today’s newsletter, I want to give you a brief profile of Zelensky, one that goes beyond the one or two sentences many people have heard about him in recent weeks. I’ll also link to some of the best profiles of him and podcasts about him, for anybody who wants more.

Benny Hill humor

By now, the basics of Zelensky’s background are well known: Before becoming Ukraine’s president, he had been a comedic actor whose best-known role was as a teacher who rose to Ukraine’s presidency thanks to a viral video.

That show, “Servant of the People,” was a cross between “The West Wing” and Monty Python. Zelensky himself has credited Benny Hill, the crude British comedian, as an influence. (You can watch a short excerpt from the show, with English voice overs .)

“As a film actor and sitcom star, Zelensky thrived in the role of the Everyman, often playing the average guy who wins over the beautiful woman seemingly beyond his reach,” Franklin Foer has written in The Atlantic.

Zelensky grew up in a fading and polluted industrial city, the son of an engineer and computer-science professor. He is Jewish, in a country with a brutal history of antisemitism, and his first language was Russian, as is the case for many Ukrainians.

He ran for president in 2019, with a charmingly populist campaign that evoked his character on “Servant of the People.” It helped that the billionaire owner of the network that broadcast the show promoted Zelensky’s candidacy, including with a documentary that aired on the eve of the election, comparing him to Ronald Reagan.

Elsewhere in Europe, many officials initially viewed Zelensky as unserious, as The New Yorker’s Joshua Yaffa has reported . “The impression was terrible,” one European diplomat said, referring to one early meeting.

The impression today is very different, of course. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Zelensky has become a Churchillian figure, the personal embodiment of his country’s refusal to yield to a murderous authoritarian.

Seeing through Putin

That image does have a lot in common with the optimistic and patriotic vision of Ukraine that Zelensky has presented since he began running for office.

His two central campaign promises were to crack down on corruption and to end the military conflict with Russia in the country’s eastern provinces. After taking office, he stripped members of Parliament of their legal immunity. He shrunk his own motorcade to two cars, without sirens. He told government officials to remove presidential portraits from their offices and replace them with pictures of their children, to remind them of the stakes of their work.

He also earnestly took to the job of president, acknowledging how little he knew. “He’s a very intent listener,” John Herbst, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, told Foer.

One early question that many Ukrainians had was what approach Zelensky would take to Russia. Some even worried that he might be too accommodating to Vladimir Putin, Anton Troianovski, The Times’s Moscow bureau chief, has noted. Zelensky not only grew up speaking Russian, but had become a star in Russia, thanks to his television shows.

“Zelensky came in as a candidate who promised to make a deal with Russia to end the war,” Anton said. Over time, though, Zelensky came to believe that Putin was not negotiating in good faith and wanted to dominate Ukraine. That belief pushed Zelensky closer to the West, angering Putin.

“In retrospect, now that we see what Putin really wants, total control over Ukraine, it is hard to see what Zelensky could’ve done,” Anton said.

Personal bravery

Since Russia invaded, Zelensky has remained in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, rallying the country through videotaped speeches. (Yesterday, Zelensky’s government posted photos of him visiting wounded soldiers at a hospital and awarding them medals.) He has done so even though Russian troops and spies are likely trying to kill him.

Anne Applebaum, a journalist and Ukraine expert, recently said on NPR that she thought Zelensky might never flee the country. “He’s an actor, and he understands that he has a role to play, and he will play the role,” Applebaum said. He knows that he represents his country, she added, and even if he wishes he had never run for president, he understands that he now symbolizes something larger than himself.

“Once you enter the role, you play it to the end,” she said. “You have a larger responsibility to the citizens and to your country’s image in the world.”

State of the War

Russian forces hit Kyiv with heavy artillery strikes this morning after days of fighting in the suburbs. One projectile struck an apartment building.

Russia continued its assault on civilians, firing on a train evacuating people fleeing the Donetsk region. Russian forces also continued to attack residential buildings in Mariupol, where a humanitarian crisis is deepening.

“The entire sky was in flames”: A Russian attack 11 miles from the border with Poland hit a base where foreigners who had come to help Ukraine were believed to be training.

Russia asked China for military equipment and for financial assistance to protect its economy, U.S. officials say. A Chinese spokesman dismissed the claim.

Russian forces fatally shot Brent Renaud, an American journalist who was reporting outside Kyiv , Ukrainian officials said.

Russian and Ukrainian officials are holding virtual peace talks today .

Explained: Who is Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s unlikely wartime President?

After the first day of russia’s strike on ukraine, zelenskyy hinted at the possibility of discussing a “neutral status” – in line with russia’s demands against ukraine’s accession to nato.

“We are not the ones who have started this war. But we are the ones who have to finish it.” Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s words from his inaugural address after he became Ukraine’s President in April 2019 gather a new significance in light of Russia ’s invasion into its territory.

The actor-comedian-turned-President had then promised a ceasefire in Donbass – the territory under contention in this war with Russia. “I’m definitely not afraid to make difficult decisions and I’m ready to lose my fame, my ratings, and if need be — without any hesitation, my position to bring peace, as long as we do not give up our territories,” Zelenskyy had said.

Today, the Head of State finds himself facing these “difficult decisions”. After the first day of Russia’s strike on Ukraine , early Friday morning, Zelenskyy hinted at the possibility of discussing a “neutral status” – in line with Russia’s demands against Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) .

In his speech, he stated that Ukraine had been “left alone” to defend itself as “everyone is afraid”. In fact, a glance through Zelenskyy’s Twitter timeline shows harried calls of sanctions against Russia and appeals to heads of states for effective and decisive action against the ‘aggressor’ ever since the Russian President’s announcement of a “military operation”.

But who is Zelenskyy and how did he come to be Ukraine’s President?

Zelenskyy’s background makes him an ‘unlikely’ President, the reasons for which are abundant: He was a comedian who played a president on television but had no prior political experience in real life. He is a Russian speaker in a country that has increasingly come to define Ukrainian as part of its nationalist identity. Lastly, he is a Jew, a minority community.

However, his popularity, the resentment against his predecessor and his promises to battle corruption culminated in his victory in the 2019 elections. His religion hardly figured into the campaign.

‘Servant of the People’

Zelenskyy started his career as a comedian and went on to become a popular face on Ukrainian television. Apart from his roles in at least six films like ‘Love in the Big City’ and ‘8 First Dates’ and appearances on the 1+1 television channel, his most popular act became his last one. As a high school teacher who unexpectedly becomes the President of the country, Zelenskyy’s fictional character in the political satire, ‘Servant of the People’, resonated with the masses.

The show premiered just a year after the events of 2014, which led to the exit of President Viktor Yanukovych following massive protests. The pro-Russian Yanukovych’s government was overthrown after he refused to sign a deal with the European Union. Fearing a lack of influence in Ukraine, Russia annexed Crimea, which then prompted pro-Russian supporters to rebel in eastern Ukraine.

A year later, ‘Servant of the People’ gave the people of Ukraine an incorruptible “president”, Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko. It portrayed a common man whose rant against corruption and cynicism in the elite class goes viral, landing him in the President’s seat. Much like the character, Zelenskyy’s campaign – one aimed at young voters through social media with minimum media appearances – was focused on ending corruption.

Though Zelenskyy avoided campaign rallies and interviews, he continued to appear on TV and his speeches over YouTube and Instagram pandered to the growing demand for change in the country. In fact, in one of the few interviews he did, Zelenskyy stated, “People want to see a president like Vasyl Holoborodko, with the same moral values. They are fed up with the establishment. They want something new.”

The production house of the show, Kvartal 95, which was founded by Zelenskyy, formed a political party named after ‘Servant of the People’ to back his candidacy. Members of Kvartal 95 went on to become advisors in Zelenskyy’s government. Despite his anti-elite stance, Ukraine’s controversial tycoon, Ihor Kolomoisky, who has been investigated for years of fraud and corruption, also backed the actor’s campaign.

Soon after he announced his candidacy in 2019, opinion polls projected Zelenskyy as a favourable candidate. This was also due to the resentment against Petro Poroshenko, the incumbent president at the time, over reports of corruption within his government and the lack of decisive actions to end the war in Donbass. He went on to win the election with a whopping 73% of the votes.

Zelenskyy’s efforts for peace in eastern Ukraine

During his early days of Presidency, Zelenskyy took several steps to end the conflict as he had promised in his campaign. In October 2019, he signed on to the Steinmeier Formula. Named after the German President, the formula proposes elections under Ukrainian legislation in the contested region of Donbass, in line with the Minsk agreements. If the supervising body, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, finds the elections free and fair, Donbass will be given a “special status” and Ukraine will regain its borders. The move had met with protests within Ukraine as several people see the Steinmeier Formula as a “surrender”.

The development, however, did not lead to a breakthrough as Zelenskyy had also said that elections would not take place as long as Russia continues its military presence in the region.

In November 2019, following talks with Vladimir Putin , Ukraine and Russian-backed rebel groups initiated a pullback of their troops from Petrivske, a city in Luhansk where they had been fighting since 2014.

In another major step towards the peace process, Ukraine and Russia also exchanged several political prisoners in September 2019. Zelenskyy had called it “the first stage to unblock our dialogue and on the first step to stop the war”. As many as 35 freed prisoners had returned to Kyiv.

In July 2020, Ukraine, Russia and the OSCE reached an agreement on a full ceasefire between the military and separatists in eastern Ukraine. However, over the years, the region witnessed several violations of the ceasefire, culminating in escalated tensions in December 2021, with both sides pointing fingers at each other.

As a new President, when Zelenskyy sought a meeting with the then-President of the United States, Donald Trump , to bolster his position against Russia, he was allegedly asked by the Republican leader for “favours”. This included investigating rival Joe Biden ’s son, Hunter’s employment on the board of a Ukrainian natural gas company. Trump was also accused of withholding $391 million in military aid till Ukraine agreed to investigate Biden.

Reports show that Trump along with his lawyer Rudy Giuliani had put continued pressure on Zelenskyy, promising a meeting with the US President.

In a memo shared by The White House regarding a call between the two heads in July 2019, Trump tells Zelenskyy, “I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it. I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say Crowdstrike…”

Crowdstrike is the cybersecurity company hired by the Democrats to investigate an attack on their servers during the 2016 elections in the US. It concluded that they had been hacked by Russian groups.

“The other thing, there’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great,” Trump says during the call, asking Zelenskyy to cooperate.

Ukraine, however, had reportedly refused to comment on the matter or testify in Trump’s trial. The Senate – where Republican had a majority – in 2020 acquitted Trump of the charges.

He was born on January 25, 1978, to Jewish parents in Kryvyy Rih, then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. His father's name is Oleksandr Zelenskyy, and his mother's name is Rymma Zelenska. When Zelensky was a small child, his family relocated to Erdenet, Mongolia for four years, and he started going to school. Later, they returned to Kryvyy Rih. Like various people from Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, he also grew up as a native Russian speaker. He gained fluency in both Ukrainian and English. He went to Kryvyy Rih Economic Institute, the local campus of Kyiv National Economic University, in 1995, and he graduated with a law degree in 2000.

He was married to Olena Kiyashko in 2003. He went to school with her. The couple have two children, namely, Aleksandra, daughter, and  Kirill, son. In 2014, in Zelenskyy's movie 8 New Dates, his daughter played Sasha, the daughter of the protagonist. She also participated in the show in 2016 called "The Comedy Comet Company Comedy's Kids" and won it. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Career as an Entertainer

His career was already headed in various directions. When he was a student, he had become active in the theatre, and his primary focus was on this. His performance group, Kvartal 95, appeared in the televised finals of KVN (Klub vesyólykh i nakhódchivykh; "Club of the Funny and Inventive People") in 1997. It was a popular improvisational comedy competition, and it was broadcast throughout the Commonwealth of Independent States. 

On KVN, Zelensky and Kvartal 95 became regulars and appeared on the programme until 2003. He also co-founded Studio Kvartal 95. It was a production company that became one of Ukraine's most successful and prolific entertainment studios.

From the creation of Studio Kvartal 95 until 2011, Zelensky served as artistic director. He was named general producer of the Ukrainian television channel Inter TV.

In 2012, he left Inter TV, and in the same year, in October, he and Kvartal 95 concluded a joint production agreement with the Ukrainian network 1+1. Ihor Kolomoisky, who was one of the wealthiest people in Ukraine, owned that network. The relationship between Zelensky and Kolomoisky would become the subject of scrutiny after the declaration by Zelensky of his intention to enter politics. During this period, while working in television, Zelensky appeared in various feature films, including the historical farce Rzhevskiy Versus Napoleon (2012) and the romantic comedies 8 First Dates (2012) and 8 New Dates (2015). 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Path to the Presidency

As an artistic director, Zelensky returned to Kvartal 95 in 2013, but his entertainment career would soon intersect with the seismic events rocking Ukraine's political landscape. After months of popular protests, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's government was overthrown in February 2014, and billionaire Petro Poroshenko was elected President of the country.

In eastern Ukraine, a Russian-backed insurgency was raging and endemic corruption was undermining public confidence in the government , Poroshenko struggled to enact modest reforms. Against this backdrop, Servant of the People premiered on 1+1 in October 2015. Zelensky cast Vasiliy Goloborodko, who was an everyman history teacher. It became a viral internet phenomenon and addressed official corruption. The show was a massive hit, and Goloborodko’s path to the presidency of Ukraine would provide a roadmap for Zelensky. In 2018, Zelenskyy's production company Kvartal 95 members registered a new political party known as Servant of the People. It had the same name as the television programme that Zelensky had started over the previous three years. 

On December 31, less than four months before the election, he announced his candidacy for president of Ukraine on the New Year's Eve evening show on the TV channel 1+1 after a few months of ambiguous statements. That time, his announcement upstaged the New Year's Eve address of President Petro Poroshenko on the same channel. On this, Zelensky said that it was unintentional and attributed it to a technical glitch.

His presidential campaign against the incumbent Petro Poroshenko was almost entirely virtual. Instead of traditional campaign rallies, Zelensky conducted stand-up comedy routines across Ukraine with his production company, Kvartal 95. He showed and styled himself as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption figure. A few days before the election on April 16, 2019, 20 Ukrainian news outlets called on Zelenskyy to "stop avoiding journalists". He, in return, said that he was not hiding from journalists but did not want to go to talk shows where "people of the old power" were "just doing PR".

Before the elections, Zelensky put together a team that consisted of former Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk and others. If he became the president of Ukraine, he would develop the economy and attract investment to the country via "a restart of the judicial system" and restore confidence in the state. A tax amnesty was also proposed by him and a 5 percent flat tax for big businesses could be increased "in dialogue with them and if everyone agrees." On March 31, Zelensky won both the first round of elections and the run-off election on April 21, 2019. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Presidency

As previously stated, Zelensky was elected President of Ukraine on April 21, 2019, with an impressive 73 percent of the vote. A few days after his presidency, he faced a foreign policy challenge when Putin announced his decision to issue Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens in separatist-controlled areas of war-torn eastern Ukraine. Zelensky ridiculed the offer and responded with a Facebook post that extended Ukrainian citizenship to Russians and others "who suffer from authoritarian or corrupt regimes."

Zelenskyy became the first Jewish President of Ukraine. Zelenskyy restored the Ukrainian citizenship of Mikheil Saakashvili on May 28 . The Ukrainian parliament rejected Zelensky's first proposal to change the electoral system. In addition to this, on June 6, lawmakers refused to include Zelensky's initiative on reinforcing criminal liability for illegal enrichment on the parliament's agenda. Instead, it included a similar bill proposed by a group of deputies. In addition, in June 2019, it was announced that the president's third major initiative would be submitted after the July 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election. The major initiative was to remove immunity from lawmakers, diplomats, and judges. Zelenskyy ordered the cancellation of the annual Kyiv Independence Day Parade on Maidan Nezalezhnosti on July 8, and the reason for this was cited as cost. He highlighted that the day would "honour heroes" on Independence Day and that the format would be new. He proposed spending the money that would have been used to finance the parade on veterans. Zelensky's party also proposed reforming Ukraine's media laws in 2020 to increase competition and loosen the dominance of Ukrainian oligarchs on television and radio broadcasters. 

A bill was passed by the parliament in January 2021, updating and reforming Ukraine's referendum laws, which were declared by the Ukrainian Constitutional Court unconstitutional in 2018. One of Zelensky's campaign promises was to fix the referendum law. Zelensky submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada in June 2021 creating a public registry of Ukrainian oligarchs. That means banning them from participating in privatisations of state-owned companies and disallowing them from contributing financially to politicians. Zelensky's goal was supported by the opposition party's goal of reducing oligarchs' influence on politics in Ukraine. In September 2021, the bill was passed into law.

सितंबर 2003 में ज़ेलेंस्की ने ओलेना कियाशको से शादी की । दोनों एक ही स्कूल में पढ़ते थे। ज़ेलेंस्का के अनुसार वह और उनके पति एक खुले तौर पर और मुख्य रूप से रूसी माहौल में बड़े हुए थे और उनके कोई रिश्तेदार नहीं थे जो यूक्रेनी बोलते थे।
