When did the Olympics start? How the modern Summer and Winter games came to be

the olympic games presentation

The 2024 Summer Olympics are fast approaching. More than 800 athletes will head to Paris to compete as part of Team USA. The Games will include warm-weather sports like swimming and diving as well as fan favorites like football, basketball and tennis.

U.S. athletes will look to add gold, silver and bronze medals to the country’s current record of 3,105 , more than double the medal count of any other country.

Here’s a history lesson on the modern Games and their ancient origins.

When did the Olympics start?

An exact date is unknown, but the International Olympic Committee cites 776 BC as the first recorded Olympic Games. Nevertheless, most believe the Games were already 500 years old at that time, according to the History Channel.

The Games were a five-day religious festival honoring Zeus, according to the IOC. Athletes competed every four years in running, jumping, boxing, throwing, wrestling, pankration ( combined boxing and wrestling ) as well as chariot racing. Athletes competed naked and, during certain wrestling events, covered in oil.

The Games were held until 393 AD, when the Roman Christian Emperor Theodosius I banned them. He believed worshipping Zeus through the Games was a "pagan abomination," according to National Geographic.

The Olympics wouldn’t return until the late 19th century. Pierre de Coubertin, who co-founded the International Olympic Committee, was inspired to reinstitute the Games after seeing what German archaeologists uncovered during an excavation of ancient Olympia when he was a child. Coubertin, seeking to increase sports education in France, presented his proposal to re-establish the Olympics in 1892. It was approved in 1894.

When were the first Olympics?

The IOC hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens. The location was chosen as a tribute to the Games ' origins. According to the History Channel, 280 male athletes from 13 countries participated in 43 events, including track and field, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, wrestling, weightlifting, fencing, shooting and tennis. The 1896 Olympics also saw the world’s first marathon competition.

But world fairs largely outshone the early Olympic Games . and it wasn’t until the 1920s that the “first truly successful” Games occurred, the History Channel says. In 1924, over 3,000 athletes – more than 100 of them women – competed in Paris.

The games have grown in size and the number of events has expanded in the last century. This year, an estimated 10,500 athletes will compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the IOC reports.

How often are the Olympics?

The Summer and Winter Olympics occur every four years to “respect the ancient origins of the Olympic Games.” A period of four years was called an “Olympiad,” in ancient Greece.

Because the two alternate, we watch the Olympics every two years. For example, the 2022 Olympics were Winter Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics are Summer Games . The next Winter Olympics will be in Italy in 2026.

When are the next Olympics?: Start and end dates to know in 2024

France Says It Built the Olympics Safely. Migrant Workers Don’t Count.

Undocumented workers played a larger and more dangerous role in delivering the Games than the Macron administration acknowledges.

A construction site.

By Sarah Hurtes

Sarah Hurtes spent weeks in France talking to construction workers, union officials and government officials involved in building the Summer Olympics.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, promised to build the Summer Olympics safely, free of the construction hazards and migrant worker abuses that tarnished soccer’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Months before the Games begin in Paris, he declared success.

“We are living up to the commitments we made,” Mr. Macron said in February.

Government data shows fewer than 200 injuries at Olympics sites over a four-year construction blitz. And no deaths.

But inspection records and other documents show that Olympics sites have been more dangerous than organizers have let on, with some projects failing to meet basic safety standards. When undocumented immigrants are hurt on the job, workers and officials say, the injuries are often handled off the books, all but guaranteeing that they will not show up in government statistics.

Even fatal accidents of laborers working legally are sometimes omitted from the Olympic count.

When two workers died on a subway project that Mr. Macron’s former transportation minister called “the lifeline of the Olympics,” their deaths were not included in the Olympic total.

When a truck fatally crushed a man who was helping build a wastewater basin to allow swimming events to be held in the Seine, his death was omitted from the Olympic count. “Administratively, it was put in another category,” said Paul Duphil, the executive secretary of France’s quasi-government construction safety watchdog.

That is because of how the French government defines an Olympic site. Accidents at the Olympic Village count, but not at the Pleyel Tower, a nearby skyscraper that has been transformed into a luxury hotel for the Games. Work at the media center counts, but construction of a gigantic footbridge that the local government says is “at the heart of the Olympic project” does not.

And in an industry where some injuries are all but inevitable, France’s data is at times remarkably pristine: The city of Marseille told The New York Times that there had not been even a single minor injury during two years of dredging and construction of the Olympic Marina, a facility on the Mediterranean where sailing competitions will be held.

Workers, union officials and some labor inspectors say all of this is part of Mr. Macron’s effort to make France sparkle in the Olympic spotlight. “It allows them to say that France isn’t Qatar,” said Simon Picou, a union representative for government labor inspectors.

Documents, along with interviews with government officials, inspectors and more than a dozen workers, show that undocumented immigrants played a larger and riskier role in delivering the Olympics than the Macron administration acknowledges. Undocumented workers described being pushed to do dangerous jobs for long hours without safety glasses, harnesses or other gear.

The situation is especially sensitive for Mr. Macron because he is under pressure to crack down on illegal immigration. And the Olympics arrive after years of changes to French labor laws. Mr. Macron cut funding for inspections and abolished company safety boards. The changes were meant to simplify France’s stifling bureaucracy . Union leaders and labor inspectors say they have made work more dangerous.

There is no indication that France has seen anywhere near as many injuries as Qatar, where journalists revealed deadly working conditions in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup and the government acknowledges that dozens of migrant workers died. But Mr. Macron has campaigned on delivering an Olympics that will be as safe and humane as they are majestic. He has required unions and employers to promise that they will maintain safe working conditions.

Mr. Macron’s office referred questions about working conditions and the injury count to other agencies. Antoine du Souich, the strategy director of Solideo, the government body that released the injury figures, said in an interview that he was unaware of any accidents involving undocumented workers. The agency relies on injury reports from construction companies, which can face legal repercussions if they are found to employ undocumented workers. And France’s official workplace injury figures include, by rule, only legal workers.

In interviews, undocumented workers described being encouraged by their employer not to report their injuries or see doctors. Mr. Picou said that employers sometimes fire injured workers or pay them to keep quiet.

Mr. du Souich said that he believes that undocumented work on Olympic sites was rare. Inspectors have identified about 150 cases, he said. “We think that the level of control that was put in place made it possible to identify — never all the cases, undoubtedly — but we think practically all the cases.”

But many of those undocumented workers came forward voluntarily, with the help of unions, in hopes of earning legal status. Inspectors have increased enforcement at Olympic sites, but that has amounted to checking the work authorization of only about 1,000 of the roughly 30,000 workers. And those without papers say they have plenty of time to hide or flee before inspections.

“The bosses always tell us to run,” said Daouda Tounkara, a 33-year-old undocumented worker from Mali who worked on the Pleyel Tower.

In interviews, 12 workers, all from Africa, described being sent by subcontractors or temp agencies to work on Olympic sites. Some said that their employers encouraged them to get fake identity papers. Others borrowed a family member’s identity. They were hired without contracts and received illegally low salaries, often working overtime.

Babacar Kobor, from Senegal, said that, while bending over to work at the Olympic Village last year, heavy rocks fell from a loader and gashed his hand. Labor inspectors and union representatives say that, normally, medics would be called and the injury would be reported to the company. But Mr. Kobor said his crew chief gave him bandages and told him to keep working.

“I had no choice,” Mr. Kobor said. “I had to keep going, or they replace me.”

Other immigrant workers described operating jackhammers for hours at a time, far beyond what is normally considered safe.

“Sometimes, you’re sleeping and it’s like you still have a jackhammer in your arms, you’re shaking so much,” said Cheickna Sarambounou, a laborer from Mali who worked without papers on the Pleyel Tower.

The Times reviewed the medical records of another worker who suffered a slipped disk. The worker, who asked that he not be named because he feared deportation, said he jackhammered for up to eight hours at a time at the Olympic Village.

He missed a month of work, unpaid, and when he returned, he said he was asked to start jackhammering again. He quit and now works on another Olympic site where he does not need to jackhammer so long. He said his company never reported his injury but, fearing retaliation, he did not report it either.

Mr. Sarambounou and Mr. Tounkara, who recently gained legal status, are among 10 men who are suing construction companies for exploiting them as undocumented workers on Olympic sites. The men say they received illegally low salaries and were denied pay slips and time off.

The companies have not yet responded in court. None of those who employed workers interviewed by The Times responded to messages seeking comment.

Unpublished reports from the global trade union Building and Wood Workers’ International show that, on two sites, representatives found workers without safety glasses, helmets or hearing protection. Workers had been shocked by unsecured electrical cables. Several had fallen from unsecured scaffolding. Union officials warned that trucks were driven carelessly, even after one worker was run over and had his leg amputated.

Mr. du Souich said that Solideo allowed union representatives to visit the sites as a way to improve safety.

“It’s such a mess,” Bachir Benamara a union representative, said in October during a closed-door meeting with labor inspectors, health insurance officials and construction company leaders. The Times watched a video of his presentation and reviewed pictures that he took. “This is to alert you: Something needs to be done,” he said.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship purse, prize money: Payout for winner Rory McIlroy, field from $20 million pool

Plenty of green was on the line this week at the green mile, and mcilroy brought home the biggest chunk.

wells-fargo-championship-trophy-g.jpg

Rory McIlroy continued his smoking play entering the second major of the season pulling off a dominant performance Sunday at Quail Hollow to win the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. It McIlroy's second victory in as many starts after teaming with Shane Lowry to win the 2024 Zurich Classic a couple weeks ago, and Sunday's win comes at an opportune time as Rory seeks to end his extended drought at major championships.

Big stakes and big money this week with 69 players visiting Charlotte for four days of pristine golf. While the trophy may not have been one of the four big ones -- one of those will be handed out next week when Valhalla hosts the 2024 PGA Championship -- the purse was in the same ballpark. A total of $20 million was be up for grabs this week falling in line with the total from the Masters last month and other signature events like the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Genesis Invitational.

Unlike the those two tournaments, however, "only" $3,600,000 was earned by McIlroy for winning. This represents the third-highest payday a winner could receive so far in 2024 as the top prize gets boosted to a nice, round $4 million for the three player invitationals while the Players Championship awarded Scottie Scheffler $4.5 million for his victory.

Wyndham Clark entered as the reigning champion but was unable to defend his crown. That said, he remains atop of McIlroy in the FedEx Cup standings as Rory shot up to fourth by winning his 26th career PGA Tour event.

No one who fell short of winning will leave empty-handed. Every golfer in the no-cut field earned at least $40,000 this week. Meanwhile, the top three all cleared seven figures, the top 11 were set to receive at least half a million, and the top 36 were all looking at six figures for their four days of work in the Queen City.

Correction question 8

The Olympic Games (or Olympics) are an international sporting event taking place every four years, during summertime. The Olympics were originally from Greece and started in 776 BC (before Christ). In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games started, invented by Pierre de Coubertin. Today there are many symbols of the Olympics: The flag with the five colored rings representing the five continents and the motto is Faster Higher Stronger. The Olympics are a worldwide celebration where many athletes compete to defend their country.

Reboots, as the past few years have shown, are beloved by the TV business. This week’s makeover centers on the upfronts , a decades-old industry ritual revitalized by a new push into streaming ads.

Upfronts 2024: Where & When They're Happening

After the Zoom doom loop of Covid, this year’s extravaganzas are sure to feel particularly festive. And the entry of major tech companies, including YouTube , whose Brandcast will cap off the week, will add considerable buzz. But is all of the exuberance a little irrational given the significant financial pressures weighing on the industry? Two players, Paramount Global and The CW, have opted to ditch large public events in favor of smaller-scale contact with advertisers, citing their doubts about the return on investing in a single show.

The stakes are considerable, with research firm eMarketer recently estimating that advertisers will spend about $18.8 billion in the upfront, one-third of their total TV outlay and 17% of what they will put toward digital video. Live events, particularly sports, remain vital and streaming allows for more precise targeting and marrying brands to the right shows.

For the companies carrying on with the traditional extravaganzas, there is no substitute.

“It’s just energy and momentum and bigness,” Jon Steinlauf, Chief U.S. Advertising Sales Officer for Warner Bros. Discovery, told Deadline in an interview. “The bigness really matters when you have decision-makers coming in.” By Steinlauf’s estimate, about 2,000 attendees at WBD’s event next Wednesday at the Theater at Madison Square Garden will be visiting New York from elsewhere.

“What I love about the week is that it allows us to really stand out,” said Rita Ferro, Disney’s President of Global Advertising. “Everybody shows up side by side. It allows almost an equal footing, so that brands can decide where they want to be.”

Todd Reinhart, partner and co-founder at DeadLizard, a creative agency whose clients include Disney, said his team has developed a saying based on this year’s combination of streaming and technology. “It’s in with the old and in with the new,” he said. Disney, adds co-founder Bill Skrief, every year looks to make its upfront “10% to 15% bigger” than the year before. “It’s all about immersion.” At the cruise-ship-sized North Javits venue, he said, “you can’t see the entire stage and all those monitors in your field of view. It breaks out of your peripheral.” DeadLizard has helped implement a number of complementary screens and visual elements, including “ribbon” monitors over the audience’s head. The main objective, he added, is “scale and it’s just showing, you know, ‘We’re Disney and it’s all the content and we can’t have enough screens to show all this stuff.'”

Josh Feldman ,CMO, Advertising & Partnerships at NBCUniversal, said the company’s commitment to Radio City (seating capacity: 6,000) is rooted in the same ambition. With the Olympics, Saturday Night Live ‘s 50th anniversary season, news programming in an election year and a raft of scripted and unscripted shows, “it really helps to have that kind of environment to use as a showcase. We want to remind our partners about the full portfolio, and to do it in an engaging and immersive way.”

Streaming, in years gone by, was largely confined to the NewFronts, an offshoot held two weeks prior to the main upfront week. This year’s NewFronts proved to be more muted, as Amazon decamped for mid-May and presenters from past years like Tubi and Peacock also left to join their corporate parents.

The business backdrop to the upfronts this year is checkered. Some companies have reported progress in the first quarter of 2024, while others posted declines as macro factors like high interest rates and inflation continued to squeeze spending. On Fox’s quarterly call with Wall Street analysts last week, CEO Lachlan Murdoch said advertising trends at the company “are clearly moving in the right direction, both in the scatter market and in early upfront discussions.”

Given the pressure to make advertisers feel like their time is well-spent shuttling around town, companies have collectively streamlined the concept of an upfront. When the focus was on scheduling blocks or vast network portfolios each wanting time in the spotlight, presentations routinely ran to multiple hours. Now, 90 minutes is generally the outer limit, with some companies aiming for a little more than an hour. That puts added pressure on each transition, stage moment, lighting cue and sizzle reel. “Every single second needs to do twice as much work as it used to before,” DeadLizard’s Reinhart said.

Presenting companies are increasingly looking to pack more razzle-dazzle into leaner running times. “We’re calling this more of the ‘IP upfront,'” WBD’s Steinlauf said. The Warner Bros. film slate, which has become a major draw on Max, will get more prominent billing than ever, he said. “We want the advertisers for the first time to hear more about what they can do” to connect with theatrical movies and HBO series, he added. (Max’s growing ad tier has recently begun allowing pre-roll ads with HBO shows, a first for the half-century-old programmer.)

Disney last year managed to assemble more talent than others, largely due to ESPN, with Serena Williams and Pat McAfee making headlines with their appearances. With no strike limitations this year, Ferro said, “In terms of star power, this is the largest ever. It kicks off with a bang and just keeps going from there.”

Robyn Henry, a VP at Production Glue, a vendor working with Warner Bros. Discovery, noted that the show can change up to the moment it starts and even potentially during the show, based on talent availability. “The process is designed to accommodate last-minute changes, so the script can change a lot,” she said, with the flurry reaching a crescendo at the end of weeks of rehearsal.

Andrew Schulman, a former TV exec whose Damn Good! Studio works with DeadLizard, said all of the effort will be worth it for those with the best programming. “Do they remember what they ate there? No. Do they remember what they saw there? Yeah. Is that the priority? One thousand percent,” he said. “Do you remember the show? If that doesn’t happen, they don’t connect those dots, then it doesn’t matter how much experience you offer and how much storytelling you think you made.” In a nod to monarchies through the centuries, he added, “The upfront is dead – long live the upfront.”

Rockets earn no. 3 selection in nba draft lottery.

Michael Horton , Digital Content Producer , Houston, TX

The Houston Rockets have completed another lucky season in the NBA Draft Lottery, as they landed the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Head coach Ime Udoka represented Houston at the lottery for the second consecutive year.

Recommended Videos

The squad entered the lottery with a relatively low chance to land a high pick. Their highest-ranking selection, which they acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in the James Harden trade in 2021, had a 20.3% chance to land in the top four, and a 4.5% chance to earn the top spot.

The No. 1 overall selection was awarded to the Atlanta Hawks. The Washington Wizards earned the second spot, and the San Antonio Spurs will have the fourth pick after Houston. The Detroit Pistons—who entered the lottery with the worst record in 2023-24 and the highest odds to earn a top pick—will pick at No. 5.

The Rockets had a slim chance to win another selection in the lottery, but their pick would have had to also land in the top four. Instead, it landed at No. 12, and was given to the Oklahoma City Thunder, as part of the Chris Paul/Russell Westbrook trade in 2019.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Rockets will pick in the top four. Their last three top picks were Jalen Green, Jabari Smith and Amen Thompson.
