Good Morning to everyone present over here. Respected teachers & my dear friends. Today I stand here to talk about My School. As we all know, school is a sacred place of knowledge. It is the fundamental stepping stone for future in everyone’s life. So let me tell you about my school of which I am very proud of. My name is ………….I study in class 3 of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ranchi. I love my school a lot; it is like my family.

My school is situated in the centre of the city with a beautiful grand building. It is a four-storey building with beautiful paintings carved in its wall. Our school provides a co-education. We have classes starting from pre-primary to class twelve in my school. Each class is divided into three sections & with a capacity of 40 students in each section.

There are 70 teachers in our school, including Principal & Vice-Principal. It also has 20 non-teaching staffs for the maintenance purpose. Our school starts at 7.30 in Morning & ends at 2.10 in the afternoon with a 30 minutes lunch break. There is a considerable Assembly Ground in front of the school where everyday Morning we start our day with prayer & meaning full thoughts.

My school has a spacious library with a sitting capacity of 120 students at a time. It has a collection of a variety of books starting from our regular academic books to story & comic books. I love spending time in the library as it is the calmest place & one can easily concentrate.

Our school is supported by six computer labs, in which we do our practical computer classes. There are two spacious halls for seminars, debates & competitions. The big playground on the backside of the school is used for different types of physical activities like games, parades etc. I often play cricket, football, kabaddi, Kho-Kho with my friends in the playground.

There is a basketball court & badminton court too in my school. Besides that, my school has a music room, art room & sports room too for different activities. There is a canteen where snacks items are available & we have our lunch in the canteen during our lunch break. Teachers of my school are very talented, friendly, kind & loving.

They keep encouraging us for different types of extracurricular activities besides the regular academic course. We celebrate all national days, community lunch, and annual functions enthusiastically in my school. My school is my pride & I love going to school every day. I learn new things & values in my school.

My school holds a variety of science quizzes and sports competitions to help students improve their grades. My school is a home where my teachers are like parents and my friends are like family who care for each other. My school has taught me self-discipline. Schools have a great culture and environment.

We do know that the first and last days of our school were memorable days. We arrive at school with an empty bag, and we leave with a bag full of memories, learnings, and emotions.

My School Experience

My high school helped me grow as a person inside and outside of the classroom by making me more confident and independent. My school has taught me the importance of independence. My high school days are fully filled with fun and excitement .

In high school, one becomes mature enough to understand the values. In that phase, I learned to direct myself. I learned about hard work and dedication toward my goal. My friends used to guide me when I was in need. I have some good pictures of them. The pictures from my school days are the best memories. I remember the days when we used to participate in extracurricular activities.

I have good memories of middle school. It was not just into academics and sports but also included music, dance, and some indoor games. My school had a library where different types of books were placed. It also used to have a robotics lab and a computer lab where highly trained staff helped us learn new skills. Our teachers not only taught the lessons but also helped us attend various competitions. I even represented my school in a quiz competition and won a prize for the school.

The biggest reason behind the success of my school is our principal. He is very active and disciplined, and his knowledge is commendable. The experiences we get in school life help us grow as humans. Everyone should remember that not everyone is fortunate enough to receive an education, so if the opportunity arises, one should seize it.

Importance of Education

Many people don't know the importance of education, and being educated plays an important role in society. Education shapes the modern world.

An educated person can understand moral values better than an uneducated person. So, education creates a better society.

People can overcome all problems by finding optimal solutions with the help of education. Education is known as the backbone of society.

Being a member of the student council can help you help your school. However, it takes hard work to get into the student council . You need to craft a good speech that gives your classmates incentives to vote for you.

Your Student Council Speech

Use a strong, attention-grabbing opening. Discuss your qualifications briefly, then move on. Focus your speech on your passion and present a blueprint to achieve your goals. Close with a strong summary and call to vote for you.

Sample Speeches

Writing the Introduction

• Do not merely start by saying, "My name is ___ and I'm running for student council." Your classmates will already know as much and this is not really a unique statement. There will be time to state the basic information after you've got the class's attention. [1] X Research source
• You can open with a question. Something like, "If there was one thing you could change about this school, what would it be?" Or a question that adds some humor , like, "I know what you're thinking. Why should I listen to this person?" and then proceed to lay out your credentials. Quotes on leadership, power, and guidance would also make good openings. However, make sure to double-check your sources and especially if you're finding quotes online. Many online quote databases, like Quote Garden or Brainy Quote, sometimes attribute quotes to the wrong sources. [2] X Research source
• If you're stuck, look up and read famous speeches. You can find many speeches from presidents, world leaders, civil rights activists, and others online. Pay attention to how they opened their speeches and ask yourself, "Was this interesting? Do I want to keep reading/listening? Why?" [3] X Research source

• State your name and grade in school. This may feel somewhat unnecessary if you go to a small school, but it's considered a formality. If you're missing this part of the speech, you may end up looking sloppy in comparison to other students. [5] X Research source
• State what you want. That is, what you're running for. Do you want to be the president , vice president , treasurer, secretary? Even if you think most students are aware of what position you're running for, make sure you state it here to remind them. [6] X Research source
• Try to keep this section brief as it's not as important as your qualifications and plans to improve the school . Even one sentence would suffice. For example, "My name is Ramona Hart, I'm in the 11th grade, and I'm running for treasurer of the student council."

• Any accomplishments relevant to the position warrant mentioning here. If you're running for secretary, for example, talk about your summer job filing papers in your uncle's law firm. If you're running for student council president, talk about your leadership experience being captain of the swim team. [7] X Research source
• While this section is important, try to keep it minimal. A couple of sentences laying out your qualifications is enough as the body of your speech is where you should spend the most time. For example, let's go back to the above example. From there, we could say, "I am currently enrolled in advanced placement algebra and I have been an honor roll student for three years. This knowledge of numbers and diligence qualifies me to have responsibility for finances for our student council." [8] X Research source

Writing the Body of the Speech

• You should list your ideas and then expand on them later in the body. It might take a bit of research to figure out what you want to change. Ask around the school, talking to students and teachers, and see where there's room for improvement. What are the concerns of the students? What are people happy with regarding the school? What would they like to see change? Asking these questions can help you get a sense of your audience and community.
• Remember, you should not make promises you cannot keep. Do not say anything just to get elected. While many students might want gum-chewing policies eliminated or for the lunch period to run twice as long, this is probably not necessary or possible. Try to focus on areas that seem important to keep your school running safely and efficiently. Concerns about things like bullying , academic standards, and extracurricular activities should be your concern over fun and games. [10] X Research source
• A good opening statement for your body would state the causes important to you and what you plan to do about them. For example, if you were running for president, you could say something like, "I understand we need to improve how we handle bullying, increase interest in extracurricular activities, and expand access to AP courses throughout the school. As your president, I would work to bring in speakers to talk about sensitivity in the classroom, increase advertising for basketball games and quiz bowl tournaments, and start a tutoring program to help students struggling with certain subjects." • Using the school library or computers, figure out the best means to tackle certain problems many schools face. How have other schools dealt with bullying? Poor test scores? Low interest in extracurricular activities? What can you reasonably do as a student council member to address these problems? [12] X Research source
• You do not have to have a point-by-point plan laid out, but a few sentences on some preliminary ideas can help you stand out from your peers. People are more inclined to vote for someone who's thought about how to solve problems in addition to identifying problems. [13] X Research source

Ending with a Strong Conclusion

• Do summarize, briefly, your qualifications but do not put the main focus on them. This is where you should sincerely state your passion. Students should not just vote for you because you'd do a good job but because you genuinely care about the school. State your passion for your community and how much you want to see other students succeed. Lots of students have high qualifications. You can set yourself apart by being a candidate who really cares. Dear Friends – I hope this day finds you in the best of spirits!

Today on the speech giving day, I – Pratishtha Singh from Class-VIII (B) – would like to deliver a speech on My School Life. I am sure we all will have something or the other to say about our school lives. Isn’t it?

The very word ‘School’ carries a lot of emotions with it and we are transported to a world where we spend half of our day studying, reading and writing, then enjoying other co-curricular activities too such as sports, dance, music, etc. We imbibe a lot in the school environment where our personalities and characters are shaped and we are prepared for the nation’s building exercise. The foundation of our early years is very important as it informs our future and this very foundation is being laid down by our school. I am in VIII standard at present and so far my journey in this school has been excellent; in fact whatever I am today I owe it all to my school.

I want to thank my parents for sending me to one of the best schools of our town and I also want to thank our hon’ble principal and teachers for being so considerate all the time and always working for the better prospects of their students. I especially want to thank my class teacher for being so patient and kind with us and always showing ready nature for resolving our queries. My school life has been best so far and there are no laments or regrets for anything. My school has given me a lot many things, i.e. it has made me confident, independent and knowledgeable. The fact that I have brought home awards and trophies in Science and Maths subjects in Olympiad as well as inter-school competition; reveal a lot about my schooling and the hard work that my teachers have put in towards our mental and intellectual growth.

There is no reason to doubt that if such school as ours continues to thrive all across the country then no one can stop our nation from growing by leaps and bounds. Needless to say, a nations’ growth is directly proportional to the development of its youth and if the future of youth is laid waste then no one can save the future of that nation from plunging into obscurity. And if the youth thrives the nation also thrives. This is the reason why so much stress is laid down on educating the youth and making them independent and imparting them different skills so that employment can be generated and more and more of our youth can find the opportunities for showcasing their talent and making their nation proud.

So I firmly believe that schools play a very important role in our society without the existence of which any nation would be reduced to a state of gross barbarity.

This is all I have to say, thank you so much for being such a great audience.

Hello Folks – Warm Greetings of the day to all of you!

I hope life is treating you well. Before I begin with the speech on My School Life, I want to thank our class teacher for giving me the opportunity to speak in front of you all and deliver a speech. I know this exercise will help remove all my inhibitions and give me enough confidence to speak. The subject of my speech is interesting and does not require any preparation at all as it will all flow from my heart.

What do I say about my school life? So far so good! The journey has been incredibly great and I have quite evolved in these preceding 12 years so much so that I am now ready for the next level challenges. Excitement is high in the air! After scoring highest marks in my 10 th board exam, I am exhilarated and boosted with enough confidence to launch myself for the upcoming challenges. I can say this because of the immense support I have received from all my teachers. Had that support not been there I wouldn’t have brought this glory home.

Whatever I am today is all because of my teachers and nothing can take this credit away from them. I am extremely thankful to my school for providing us with all the quintessential resources needed for our growth and development. Whether it’s the libraries or labs, time to time conducted workshops or our extra classes – everything has helped us a lot in getting closer to our dreams. If we as students come across any hindrance in our studies we can directly report it to our principal. The management is smooth and pretty systematic in our school. It doesn’t take days and months to resolve our query as quick decisions and actions are taken. This is the reason why our school has gone on to achieve benchmarks after benchmarks and needless to say is counted amongst one of the best schools of Dwarka.

I can proudly say that my school is the best school and whoever passes out from this school is bound to land successfully somewhere and will definitely make it to the best. The best part about my school is that it doesn’t function with a view to ameliorate the immediate present, but constantly works towards achieving a vision that it has envisaged for itself. If our future is secure then we are secure and this is the primary goal of our school, i.e. to safeguard our future by molding us in such a manner that we can derive strength from our own selves and overcome any obstacle in life.

There couldn’t have been a better school for me than this which has greatly honed my skills and showcased my talent so well that today I feel proud of my achievements and so are my teachers and parents. In the end, I only wish for my school unbounded success and glory.

School life is an exciting phase in everyone’s life, I am sure you all will agree. In fact, my school life has been so enriching that I cannot thank enough my parents for sending me to the best school and of course my teachers for being such a guiding torch in the entire journey. My teachers have been an influential factor in my life, helped shape my personality and shared a lot with us from their immense reservoir of knowledge. Whatever I am today is all because of my school and the kind of grooming they have given me in my early years.

Other than academics, I thoroughly enjoyed other co-curricular activities, such as being a part of the basketball fraternity, cricket federation, debate society, etc. This entire journey has been really exciting and I have grown as a person, as an individual. It is rightly said that “school life is the best life” and this phrase sums up the whole crux of it because during the entire 12-year period we learn something new and something innovating. School provides us with a stirring environment where we grow; we learn; experience new things; make friends and gain the confidence to face the world outside. It is therefore the best phase in a student’s life where he/she greatly evolves and gain the ability to think critically.

School also teaches us discipline and the value of time without which we can never achieve our aims and goals in life. The exams that we give during the school days help us prepare for the big challenges in life. There is no reason for me to doubt that it is a place where we experience an over round development of our being, where our scholastic abilities grow, where our horizon widens and we are exposed to numerous possibilities of learning new things and molding our personalities in the best way possible. Though every phase in our lives has its own importance, but we can never imbibe as much as we do from our school lives because it is a long 12-year journey. Isn’t it?

I can never get over the indelible impression that my school has left over me – that time of waking up early morning, preparing for school, walking inside the classrooms, reading, writing, finishing the assignments, appearing for the examination, participating in annual functions, debate competitions and of course last but not the least sports too. Nothing was left untouched as my school has taught me a lot, which I would never be able to thank my school for.

A good school always imparts value education to its students and this value education is not confined to just books, but goes beyond that which helps a child his/her lifetime. This is all I have to say.

Before we begin with the celebration today, please allow me to honor our chief guest, principal, vice principal and all our teachers.

I am extremely glad to welcome everyone today at our school annual function. I, Pushkar Chawla, from Class-XII (B), am your host for today and feel honored to have shared the stage with my class teacher Dr. Naina Gupta who is truly an inspiration for me. This annual function is indeed very special for all of us and we eagerly await this day for unbounded fun and celebration. But this time friends, I promise you some extra doses of laughter and enjoyment with some really engaging games.

Besides, I also would like to express my feelings today because this is our last year in school and post that our higher secondary education would be completed and so our journey in the school. Therefore, on this auspicious day I would like to say a few words for my school and would also like to express my gratitude for bestowing on us the wealth of knowledge.

It feels like yesterday when I took admission in this school, but it was long 10 years back when my father got me here. At that time I was a child and then my educational journey began. I entered in X standard and now I stand here as a grown up individual waiting to emerge with flying colors.

From learning to read and write, this school has taught me everything from the scratch. Here, I have not just passed the examinations, but have learnt to overcome difficulties and be a strong individual. We are not only taught lessons in class, but are given some precious lifelong lessons which will stay with us all our lives. We are taught how discipline plays a key role in accomplishing our goals and why it is important to value time. Then other than academics, we are pushed to be a part of other co-curricular activities. Whereas I excelled in basketball, my other friends excelled in cricket, some in dance, some in music, etc. Inter school competitions were often organized so that we can learn to compete in a healthy manner and can best realize our potential.

We were given ample opportunities to showcase our talent and skill. It is all because of this that we are confident individuals and have learnt to conduct ourselves in the world outside. Had this school not been there as our backbone and as our firm support, we wouldn’t have been the kind of personalities that we are today, i.e. strong and dynamic. A school therefore plays a really significant role in laying the scholastic foundation of a child and I feel lucky enough to have been sent to such a school as this is a place where every child is nurtured with a lot of care and attention.

In the end all I want to say is that I am a proud student of our ABC School. Now, let the show begins.

• Greeting - Attention Getter - The Hook You'll need an opening statement or rhetorical  question to sit your audience up with open ears and minds. For more see: How to write a speech introduction: 12 of the best ways to start.  
• Who you are - your name, your place or grade in the school, and maybe, your hobbies or interests, and the clubs or teams you're a member of. For example, Amnesty International, the speech and debate club, cross-country and basketball. And if you've used a campaign slogan work it in. It'll jog people's memories. 'Ah, yes, that person!', they'll think. Being known and familiar gives you a head start.
• What you want - the role you are campaigning for: President, Vice President,  Treasurer, Secretary, Historian...
• What you are going to do for the audience - benefits to them in exchange for their vote. (Brief summary -you will expand this in the body of your speech.)

Research the role

Think about your audience, what tone or choice of vocabulary is best suited to them.

Avoid trying to impress with either 'big' words or use of slang. Both are traps! Be yourself. Authentic. Real.

Keep your language conversational rather than overly formal and use smaller rather than large sentences.

Try using active rather than passive words. These convey enthusiasm. For examples, see this page on using action verbs . You'll discover how to go from boring bla bla bland to dynamic excitement.

What 'hook' will you use to get them to listen? Humor? Humor is good if it is relevant and inclusive rather than exclusive. (No 'in' jokes!).

Your goal in the role you want

Avoid setting up expectations that you will deliver beyond your capability. :-)

It might be very tempting, but can you really reduce school hours, increase academic standards, introduce a range of exciting new extracurricular activities, as well as have a 'green day' and a movie night every month? Please keep it real!

Your credibility or qualifications

Now is not the time either to be shy or arrogantly big-headed! Let the audience know how right you are for the role you want.

Set yourself apart from other candidates by sharing compelling personal stories or anecdotes that both support your pitch, and show you understand the key issues that matter to your fellow students.

Your school's requirements

If your speech does not meet pre- established criteria in any way you may find it is returned to you edited. It's safer to find out what those criteria are BEFORE writing to avoid having to re-write or worse, being disqualified entirely.

Mockery and personal insults are not clever. They boomerang back on you, letting your audience know you're not to be trusted and neither are you ready for leadership.

Readily acknowledging the skill and expertise of your fellow candidates sincerely in a way that doesn't demean yourself, or them, shows an open mind and maturity.

Aim to have your speech ready BEFORE the deadline.

Give yourself time to prepare thoroughly, including time to review of your opponents' campaigns. That can be very useful for seeing their strengths as well as their weaknesses, which you can then respond to in your own material.

Student Council President speech example 

Here's a sample student council speech. I've written it from the perspective of someone running for President.

As you read it, imagine it said aloud. That will help you get the rhythm and flow of language. The speech is between 3 - 4 minutes long, depending on how quickly you speak.

Vote Sophia Clarke for Student Council President

"I’ve got a question for you. I’m not asking you to shout your answer out, or raise your hand. All I’m asking is that you give it room in your mind. Let it sit for a bit, and have a think about it.

My question is – do you believe like I do, that all of us deserve the opportunity to make the best of ourselves? Not second best, 3 rd , or even, highly commended. The BEST.

I’m Sophia Clarke. I’m in the 12 th  grade, and I’m running for president. My vision is that each student is enabled to develop the skills and confidence to become the bigger, better version of themselves. The best they can be.  Regardless of who they are, and what they need to achieve that.

It’s an audacious goal. Some would say an idealistic, rather than a realistic, one.

However I say it’s awesome. And that you’re intelligent people who realize that reaching any goal starts with taking the first step.

So let me remind you why choosing me, Sophia Clarke, for president, is also choosing a better chance for yourself, and everyone else to grow.

I know you, and I know your needs well. I’ve served on your behalf in multiple roles through my years here; secretary, auditor, public relations officer, and have successfully taken on multiple issues. You’ll know some of those through directly benefiting from them.

It was me who was behind the push to get a regular anti-bullying program running throughout the school. That was two years ago, and now the  Teens Against Bullying  message underpins what we expect and strive for in our every day dealings with each other.

We know incidents of bullying are far fewer as a result. As our orange tee shirts say we ‘choose kindness, acceptance and inclusion’ for each other, and our selves.

Who has been involved in our mentoring-homework program? Either as a buddy-tutor or as a student getting a helping hand? And who, like me, is passionate about making sure that everybody gets a fair go?

In the past year, under my watch that program has escalated. We have over 50% more tutors across more subject areas and more students taking up the offer of help. That is a fabulous outcome for everybody. Truly win-win.

A tick in the box alongside my name is a tick for the continued growth of those programs. Their value is proven. They allow each of us to grow and experience the strength and confidence that comes from knowing that we can make a positive difference in other people’s lives as well as our own.

When you vote me for President you get my capacity to organize, to liaise, to listen and to speak, working for the benefit of everybody.

A 'yes' for me is a 'yes' for appreciating and celebrating diversity.

A 'yes' for me, Sophia Clarke for President, is 'yes' to a better you.

And together that is a 'yes' to a better life, and a better school, for all of us."

Student Council Vice President speech example

Like the speech above, this one runs to approximately 4 minutes when said aloud. Try it and see.

Nod your head if you've heard of the phrase '2nd fiddle' or '2IC'.

What about 'sidekick'?

Not booting a ball in from a sideline but a trusty partner to whoever it is who has the leading role. Like Robin is for Batman.

Or like, {name of your country's Vice President or Prime Minister} is for {name of country's President or Prime Minister} or {name of your school's Vice Principal} is for {name of your school's Principal}!

Well, that's what I aspire to - to become the trusty, tried and true sidekick to the President on our student council.

My name is Jason Hull. I'm in Grade 12 and proudly standing in front of you today as a candidate for the role of Vice President. Yes, I am asking you to give me something of immense value - your vote.

I know what the issues, here at {name of school} are. As part of my campaign, I've interviewed you, and listened. I promise your ideas will be acted on.

Afterall I've trained for this role, put in the time. You know, I know how to get things done.

Last year I served as Secretary and the year before that I was a representative for the committee - proof that I'm committed to bettering our school environment not just for you, but for everybody!

With your support, I'll be your go-to guy when you want to make sure that your opinions and feedback reach the decision-makers.

One of my main goals as your Vice President is to champion your initiatives: amongst others, that's the library extensions you told me about, the desire for healthier food choices in our cafeteria, and the urgent need to increase and diversify the workforce and out-reach opportunities that so many of you mentioned.

In the role of Vice President, I will work alongside the President fulfilling my duties to the best of my ability. 

Together, we'll make sure that your concerns, and hopes are not just heard but actively pursued. Not 'I' will make sure, but 'we'.

There is no 'I' in we, and that too, is a prerequisite of the Vice President's position: the capacity to put aside ego and to work productively for the good of all.

Because together, we, the Vice President, the President and the other council members, are stronger and can achieve more.

The Vice President role may be a support act but it's a vital one.  To succeed in it, collaboration is key. I promise to work hand in hand not only with the President but also with the entire student council team, our teachers, and our administration on your behalf.

Unity is strength. More than ever, we need to nurture understanding, kindness and respect for each other. Regardless of your grade, interests, or background, I want every one of you to feel valued and heard.

That's a goal many would say is impossible.

However, I say, we need to be the difference we want to see in the world. And to borrow those famous words of Helen Keller's: "Alone we can do so little. Together we can so much."

It would be an honor to be your voice, your eyes and your ears as Vice President.

So, I ask you, will you trust me to have your best interests at heart? Will you enable me to work on your behalf?

And are you willing to give me, Jason Hull, your vote for best sidekick, aka. Vice President?

I'll take those smiles, as a 'Yes'.

After you've finished writing your speech

Now that you've finished writing, you're ready to begin work on your delivery: how you present the speech to your audience.

The first step in that process is making sure your speech fits comfortably into whatever time you've been allocated.

After that comes rehearsal. The information you need for both steps is below.

Timing and word count

Student Council Speeches are generally brief: around 1-4 minutes long which isn't a lot of time! That's between approximately 150 - 600 words at an average speaking rate of 150 words per minute.

To be safe say your speech out loud as if you were delivering it for real and time it. In some schools going overtime can result in being disqualified.

Going faster to fit everything in

Please do not be tempted to say it faster to get everything you planned said. As a strategy it doesn't work. You'll end up gabbling: speaking far too quickly and people won't be able to understand what you're saying.

Cutting out extra material

If you have got too much material for the time limit, cut it. Choose the least important ideas to let go of first. Then move on to rephrasing to reduce the number of words used to express a point.

When you think it's done, repeat the test. Say it out loud as if you were actually giving it, and time it.

If you're now within the allotted time, you are ready for rehearsal.

How to rehearse your speech

Please, please  rehearse your speech ! Do not be tempted to wing it. The more you rehearse the easier it will be to deliver it well.

Remember it is only 1 to 4 minutes long! In that time your goal is to have your audience ready to vote for you.

You can help them make that decision by being confident and prepared. You will show that through:

• your speaking style  - natural, sincere, fluent, understandable (clear and able to be heard without straining)
• your body language  - relaxed, open gestures, good eye contact and smiling
• your personal grooming or presentation  because how you look 'speaks' too. Make sure that your clothing and general grooming supports your speech because, like it or not, you will be judged on both!

6 Ways Schools Are Managing Students’ Cellphone Use

A flurry of school districts across the country are tightening cellphone restrictions, because they believe students’ misuse of the devices has negatively affected their behavior and ability to learn.

In 2015, 66 percent of schools in the United States prohibited non-academic use of cellphones during school hours, according to the National Center for Education Statistics . By 2020, that percentage had jumped to 77 percent.

Many educators blame students’ cellphone use for being the top distraction in schools and classrooms . The constant use of the devices has also been linked to students’ worsening mental health .

The issue has caught the attention of federal and state policymakers, too. Some states—such as California, Florida, Indiana, and Tennessee—have passed laws allowing schools to restrict cellphone use. A handful of other states are considering passing similar laws. Congressional lawmakers have also introduced legislation that would require a federal study on the effects of cellphone use on students’ mental health and academic performance.

Liz Kolb, a clinical professor of education technologies and teacher education at the University of Michigan, said it’s unlikely that all 50 states will pass laws restricting students’ cellphone use, “but we’re seeing a lot more [movement] at the individual school level, where they’re trying to figure out policies that make sense [for their communities].”

At the district level, these restrictions vary widely. Some districts restrict student cellphone use anywhere and any time during the school day. Some allow use of the devices during lunch and in the hallways. And others haven’t placed any restrictions at all, often because of parent and student pushback.

Even in districts where there’s a ban, “there’s a lot of nuance” in how schools are addressing it, Kolb said. “In order for a full school ban to be effective, you really have to have strong leadership supporting the staff in enforcing it.”

Some of those nuances include exceptions for students who have a documented need to have their digital devices for health reasons, such as checking blood glucose levels if a student has diabetes. Teachers also have the flexibility to allow students to use their cellphones in class if they are needed for instructional purposes.

Here are six different policy approaches districts are putting in place to address concerns about student cellphone use:

1. Cellphones are restricted for all students, regardless of grade level

In Florida’s Orange County district , all students are prohibited from using their cellphones and other wireless communication devices, such as smartwatches, during school hours—meaning from the first bell to the dismissal bell, these devices must be silenced and put away in their bags. If a student is caught using a phone during the school day, the device will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. Depending on the circumstances of the violation, a student could also get detention or be suspended.

Flint schools in Michigan also prohibit all students, regardless of grade level, from using cellphones or other personal electronic devices. If a student is caught using a phone, it will be confiscated and returned to the student’s parent or caretaker.

Some districts provide technological solutions, such as pouches, to lock and store students’ phones during the school day. In other districts, educators have found creative ways to separate students from their phones, such as using over-the-door shoe holders where students place their phones during class.

2. Cellphones restricted only for elementary students, more flexible for middle and high school students

While restrictions on the use of cellphones and other two-way communication devices exist for all students in the Wauwatosa district in Wisconsin , there are more flexible rules for middle and high school students. Cellphones are prohibited all day for elementary students, but middle and high school students can use their phones before and after school, between class periods, during lunch, and in free periods. Teachers and principals have discretion for imposing consequences for misuse.

3. Cellphones are prohibited for elementary and middle school students, but more flexible for high school students

Elementary and middle school students in Virginia’s Rockingham district are prohibited from using personal electronic devices during the school day, while high school students may use their devices during lunch, study hall, advisory periods if permitted by a teacher and principal, and in between classes.

4. Cellphones are restricted only in classrooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms

Other districts, such as Richmond schools in Wisconsin, have restrictions on cellphone use only in certain areas of schools, such as classrooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms—to prevent bullying or sharing of inappropriate images, according to some district policies.

5. Cellphones restricted only in classrooms

Some restrictions are centered around classroom time only and allow students to use their phones outside of the classroom. In the Brush school district in Colorado , for instance, students aren’t allowed to have their phones out during instructional hours but can use them any other time. If a student is caught with a phone when they’re not allowed to have it, parents can either come to school to collect the phone or they can let the school keep the phone until the end of the day.

6. Cellphone restrictions are left up to each school

There are also districts, such as Meriden in Connecticut and Minnetonka in Minnesota, that don’t have districtwide restrictions, but instead have guidelines that schools can choose to follow.

For instance, in Meriden, the guidelines recommend elementary students keep their phones in their bags the whole school day; middle school students keep their phones in their lockers but can use them during lunch; and to let high school students have access to their phones all day but they must be turned off and out of sight during class time.

Other districts, such as Pawtucket in Rhode Island , allow principals or teachers to implement their own school or classroom rules around cellphones, as long as there’s a clear plan for allowing students to use them in case of emergencies.

The most significant thing that I find in my school are two libraries that are full of books. Books related to all subjects including history, geography, science, literature, religion, computer, etc placed in order for further study. The world of books where students gather to find the pearls. Books are the treasures.

One of the most touching feature of my school is that the best teachers. They not only teach students but keep students active and agile in both curricular and non-curricular activities that benefits a lot. What makes my school different from rest of the schools is the science laboratories where we learn to discover new experiments in the filed of science.

On the whole my school is the temple of learning which I worship each day. Here I am not only taught in books but also my teachers teach me respect my elders and friends. They teach us how to be kind to others, to be patient, compassionate, honest, truthful, forgiving and to be a human.

Good Morning to all. Today I stand here to talk about my school. As you all know that school is the most sacred place where one learns and get his or her education. Education is the basic pillar of success.

There are around 50 classrooms, two big halls for seminars and debate competitions, two spacious libraries and a wide staff room is present.

The teachers of my school are highly talented and experienced. They are very kind and loving, they never discriminate among students and provide friendly environment for learning. Some teachers are very strict and some are very polite and humble. The principal of our school is a decent man, he is the man of letters and possess a enthralling decorum.

In the libraries of my school different types of books are placed specially the literature and science books. In front of libraries there are large gardens where students can read books. Apart from it there are science laboratories where all types of equipment are present for the practical work.

There is a variety of flowers and plants in my school garden. Most importantly in my school there is a dispensary, near to it lies the principal’s office. Adjacent to lawns and gardens there are playgrounds for little kids. Last time we celebrated earth’s day at our school, on this occasion all staff including students planted trees in the premises of our school to make earth green and healthy.

Trees are the beauty of our school. Colorful flowers on plants add extra beauty to our school. During half time we enjoy taking lunch at the school canteen. All eatables are provided at subsidized rates in the canteen of our school.

What is 'school refusal' and what can I do if my child struggles to get to school?

Chances are you've heard about or have a child who struggles to attend school.

A growing number of Aussie kids are missing school — for the last decade attendance rates have been dropping according to the national attendance authority, ACARA.

One of the reasons experts say some kids are not going is "school refusal". It's a term that refers to kids who experience emotional distress around school.

Many experts and families argue the more accurate term is "school can't", as it's not a deliberate choice by the child.

The issue — the subject of this week's Four Corners, 'The Kids Who Can't' — has largely been a hidden struggle for families. But last year a Senate inquiry brought new attention and some recommendations.

Desperate parents though, are still searching for answers.

There's no easy solution, and every kid's situation is different, but here are some resources and options that might help you.

What is school refusal and who is at risk?

The reasons children struggle to attend school can be complex. Research suggests that risk factors can include psychological problems, socio-economic disadvantage and school environment problems like bullying.

While school refusal can be caused by problems at home or school, it's often associated with autism, ADHD and anxiety disorders.

Some of the ways experts and education departments say it can present are:

• Reluctance to get up on school mornings
• Tantrums or outbursts
• Repeated pleas to go home
• Frequent lateness or skipping of school
• Frequent requests to go to the sick bay
• Threats to harm themselves

Fundamentally it's where a child has trouble attending or remaining at school due to varying underlying stressors.

Sydney mum Alice says her eight-year-old daughter Frieda, who is autistic, struggles to get to school full-time.

"Some days we couldn't even get out of the house. Some days we would get as far as the footpath and then she couldn't go in … then sometimes [she'd] just run away," she says.

Experts say school refusal can impact anyone, but certain groups are more at risk.

"They may be autistic, they may have learning difficulties, ADHD. They may have anxiety or some other mood disorder," says Lisa McKay-Brown, an education researcher at the University of Melbourne.

Isn't it just wagging?

Truancy involves children who typically conceal their absence from their parents and may show antisocial behaviours.

School refusal, on the other hand, is when parents know about their child's absence from school and have tried to get them to attend. The attendance issue is often due to distress.

What can my child's current school do?

Your child's school should be your first point of contact to seek help.

This may mean collaborating with the school to come up with any adjustments to assist your child and make them feel safe. As education is a state-run system – schools can advise what support options are available in your area.

For example:

In New South Wales, extra support may be sought by your child's school. They may apply for integration funding support (IFS) to fund a teaching and support officer for your child or other support if that is additionally required.

Your school may also explore the option of a transfer to a school for specific purposes (SSPs) that provide targeted and specialist programs. As part of the referral process, it may be required that students have a confirmed disability that meets the department's disability criteria.

Are there any government programs focusing on school refusers?

Each state has different resources available for families dealing with school refusal.

In Victoria, the education department runs programs to re-engage youth in their schooling (there's a similar program in NSW). In one of them, called the "Navigator", Victorian kids aged 12 to 17 can be referred if their attendance is below 30 per cent.

In Queensland, families can call the Regional Youth Engagement Service for help and assistance if their child is refusing to go to school. They can put parents in touch with guidance counsellors and other professionals to provide support.

There are no other government schools in my catchment zone, what are my options?

There are a number of independent schools that cater for young people who are disengaged from education and whose needs are not being met by the mainstream system.

But they're not everywhere, and there's high demand to secure a place. The waitlist at one school, MacKillop Education Geelong, was up to 100 people long.

Ethan, a 12-year-old from Geelong waited six months to get a spot at the school.

When he did get in, he flourished.

"When he came here, he couldn't read, couldn't write, couldn't do anything, and now, he's taking on board the learning … to the point where he can go back to mainstream school next year," says his mother Sam.

The school has 80 students enrolled and keeps class sizes limited to eight kids. It has chill-out areas for students who need emotional regulation, and made adjustments like allowing kids to choose what they wear.

Distance education programs are also available at some schools for children and youth who may be geographically isolated or whose special circumstances prevent them from attending a school.

Are there other options?

Some parents homeschool in order to meet their child's education needs themselves. It is a legally recognised alternative to enrolment in a school.

For some, it's a last resort they feel they must take on, even if it means sacrificing work and other commitments. But for many, it's just not financially feasible.

Each state and territory has different registration and monitoring requirements for parents who homeschool their kids.

Home Education Association, a not-for-profit community support group, has some resources on what each state and territory requires .

How many families is this affecting?

It's really hard to tell.

Deakin University researcher, Associate Professor Glenn Melvin, says one of the biggest issues with addressing school refusal is that we don't know how many young people it's impacting.

There is no comprehensive national data on school refusal because most states and territories are not tracking the reason kids are absent from school

"Departments of Education don't routinely collect this data, but this is critical data. It might be that the problem is much larger than we expect," Dr Melvin says.

Victoria is the only state that tracks school refusal numbers.

In 2021, 11,825 students were affected – but the Victorian government says this is a conservative estimate.

What's being done?

The Senate inquiry into school refusal made 14 recommendations to the federal, state and territory governments.

They include:

• A nationally agreed definition of school refusal and a consistent approach to recording school absences
• funding a support network for parents and schools
• An expansion of subsidised student mental health care visits

This month, the federal government agreed or supported in principle two of the inquiry's 14 recommendations.

They include commissioning the Australian Education Research Organisation to analyse what's driving the problem and possible interventions as well as disseminating school refusal training for teachers.

Greens senator Penny Allman-Payne, who helped instigate the inquiry, says some solutions could be integrated into mainstream schools.

"We know that there are things that work: early intervention, smaller class sizes, flexible campuses, interest-led learning," she says.

How can I understand the issue better as a parent?

While no national resource exists to help parents dealing with school refusal, most state education departments have information available online.

In Australia, Monash University, University of Melbourne and Deakin University researchers have also created evidence-based parent resources for school refusal including a parenting guide and online modules for families.

What We Know About the Protests and Arrests at Columbia University

After nearly two weeks of protests, demonstrators seized Hamilton Hall. By the end of the night, the police moved into to arrest them.

Columbia University is grappling with the fallout from its president’s promise to Congress that she would crack down on unsanctioned protests, and her decision to ask the police to clear an encampment on campus, resulting in the arrests of more than 100 students earlier this month.

On Tuesday, after protesters seized Hamilton Hall overnight, Columbia called in the police again and asked officers to remain on campus until May 17, after commencement.

“The events on campus last night have left us no choice,” Nemat Shafik, Columbia’s president, said in a letter to a New York Police Department official on Tuesday.

Police officers in riot gear made dozens of arrests and removed banners from Hamilton Hall’s facade overnight. An encampment near the building was cleared, leaving behind square indents on the grass on Wednesday morning. The campus was still closed on Wednesday to everyone but students who lived there and employees who provided essential services.

Dr. Shafik’s plea for the police presence came after almost two weeks of protests rocked the university, with demonstrators building (and rebuilding) an encampment, recriminations over the initial summoning of the police to campus on April 18, and accusations that Columbia has effectively allowed protesters, in some instances, to celebrate Hamas and target Jewish students for intimidation.

Last week, the university started offering hybrid classes, an acknowledgment that the disputes at the center of campus tension were unlikely to be resolved before the end of the school year. Commencement is scheduled for May 15.

On Friday, university leaders signaled that they were not eager to call in the police again.

“We called on N.Y.P.D. to clear an encampment once, but we all share the view, based on discussions within our community and with outside experts, that to bring back the N.Y.P.D. at this time would be counterproductive, further inflaming what is happening on campus, and drawing thousands to our doorstep who would threaten our community,” Columbia leaders, including Dr. Shafik, wrote. “Having said that, we also need to continue to enforce our own rules and ensure that those who violate the norms of our community face consequences.”

Columbia said Monday evening that it had started to suspend students who remained in the encampment, after they effectively declined an offer from the university to limit discipline. The Hamilton Hall occupation began hours later.

At around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the police returned to Columbia and began arresting protesters.

How Columbia got here

Since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, American college campuses have been hubs of increased protest and debate. The scene at Columbia has been particularly contentious, with protests drawing hundreds of demonstrators, and some faculty members drawing attention for statements that critics considered to be antisemitic.

Columbia administrators, like their counterparts on campuses across the country, have struggled to fine-tune a response that balances discipline, free speech, academic freedom and institutional and national politics. For example, Columbia suspended two pro-Palestinian student groups after a walkout, and it has rewritten its protest policies, suspended some students and moved to cut or reduce ties to some faculty members.

The university’s approach was the focus of a congressional committee hearing on April 17. Over more than three hours in Washington, Dr. Shafik and other Columbia leaders tried to placate Republican lawmakers by acknowledging that they had been unprepared for the tensions of recent months and promising new crackdowns.

Although their answers appeared to please some lawmakers on Capitol Hill, they stirred unrest on campus, where protesters had built an encampment in the hours before Dr. Shafik’s testimony.

Columbia called in the police twice in April.

Less than 24 hours after the hearing adjourned, New York City police officers in riot gear entered the private campus at the request of Dr. Shafik and Columbia leaders. The police swept into the encampment to arrest defiant protesters and dismantle the demonstration, which was calling for the university to eliminate its financial ties to Israel. The authorities reported more than 100 arrests .

Many people welcomed the decision to call in the police to remove the tent protest in mid-April, and said that Dr. Shafik was well within her power to shut down unauthorized protests on private property. But the decision also provoked fresh outcry from students, faculty members, free-speech groups and critics of Israel, who argued that it was counterproductive to shut down a peaceful protest, particularly on a campus that is supposed to be a marketplace of ideas.

By the time many of the critiques rolled in, protesters had already started gathering again, chanting some of the same slogans — “We don’t want no Zionists here” and “Israel is a racist state” — that Dr. Shafik had suggested were creating “a harassing and intimidating environment for many of our students.”

Protesters pitched tents again, but this time the administration sought to negotiate with them.

Within two weeks, however, the negotiations broke down and protesters took over Hamilton Hall, an administrative building that has a long history of student takeovers. Columbia lost patience and brought the police back to campus. Dr. Shafik, in her letter to the Police Department on Tuesday evening, said the university had made its decision “with the utmost regret.”

Some protests unnerved Jewish students

Columbia cannot control what happens off its property, and the neighborhood around its campus has drawn significant attention in the aftermath of the arrests, with some reports of antisemitic harassment. School officials have said much of the incendiary language has come from outside protesters.

“Go back to Poland!” one masked protester who clutched a Palestinian flag shouted outside the Columbia campus gates, according to a video posted on X . Elsewhere online, a Columbia student said protesters had stolen, and then tried to burn, an Israeli flag, and that Jewish students had been splashed with water.

The Columbia chapter of Chabad, an international Orthodox Jewish movement, said that protesters targeted Jewish students with expletives as they left campus.

The White House condemned the episodes of antisemitic protest. A spokesman, Andrew Bates, said that “calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community are blatantly antisemitic, unconscionable and dangerous.”

Elie Buechler, an Orthodox rabbi who works at Columbia, said that campus and city police officers had failed to guarantee the safety of Jewish students “in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy" and suggested that the students return home “until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved.”

That view was not universally shared. Hillel, the Jewish student organization on campus, called for increased security and said it was not urging Jewish students to leave.

Some on-campus activists distanced themselves from the agitators.

“There’s so many young Jewish people who are, like, a vital part” of the protests, said Grant Miner, a Jewish graduate student at Columbia who belongs to a student coalition calling on Columbia to divest from companies connected to Israel.

That group said in a statement, “We are frustrated by media distractions focusing on inflammatory individuals who do not represent us,” and added that the group’s members “firmly reject any form of hate or bigotry.”
