Speech on Freedom of Kashmir in urdu
Kashmir Day Poetry, Quotes, Speech, Posters, History and Songs
Kashmir day is also known as “Kashmir Solidarity Day” in Pakistan. In 1990, the Chief Minister of Punjab Nawaz Sharif called the political and religious parties to celebrate 5th February as Solidarity Day with the Kashmiris.
So, for the first time, the Kashmir day was celebrated on 5th Feb in 1990. He appealed the people to protest against India that has occupied a big part of Kashmir and does not let the Kashmiris live in the peaceful state.
So, the appeal was followed by the Pakistanis, and there were rallies, protest processions, speeches and prayers for the Kashmiri freedom movement across the land. The ruling party declared the day as a “Public Holiday” at that time.
The day is recognized on the international level. Now, every year on 5th Feb, Pakistanis celebrates Kashmir Day to support their Kashmiri Brethren in their struggle against the atrocities of Indian.
The people living in occupied Kashmir have been making efforts to breathe in the free air for the last seven decades. The Indian armed forces interrupt their freedom and have occupied their lands forcefully. They are struggling to set their country free and to live with freedom from India. Pakistanis support their aim, and they stand united with the Kashmiri people against India.
It is equally important for political parties and religious parties in Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir. The political and religious parties in both the lands organize rallies, processions, conferences, and seminars to show their devotion towards their Kashmiri Brethren.
Kashmir Day Poetry
The leaders and spokespersons of the parties make speeches to show their unity and devotion towards Kashmir and Kashmiri people. The people of Pakistan make the freedom movement of Kashmiris strengthened against Indian occupation. Kashmiris hate Indian occupation on their lands, and they are making struggle and sacrificing their lives to set their country free out of the foreign occupation. The Kashmiris want to live a free life and India wants to keep Kashmir as an Indian territory forcibly. However, Pakistan supports Kashmiri people and their freedom to live as an independent state.
Initially, the Kashmir Solidarity day was observed in Pakistan. Now it has been observed on international levels. Pakistanis wherever they are, celebrate this day to show solidarity and devotion towards Kashmiris. For this purpose, the poets from various parts of the world write heart touching poems. The poems also show how much passionate love they are bearing in their hearts for Kashmir. Here, I am going to give a few examples of the poetry on Kashmir day. The poets from Pakistan, Kashmir and even from other countries have written about the freedom of Kashmir to make the world aware of the unjust and forceful occupation of India over Kashmir. Some poems are in Urdu while others are in English. Find them below.
Poem: FREE KASHMIR
Bodies all dusted.
Choices all busted.
Voices all gusted.
Rights all rusted.
The schools like barracks.
The play fields like Graveyards.
Buried all freedom lied in the backyards.
Speaking a word here brings you thousand hazards.
Calling themselves doves are all Jeopard’s.
with due regards to all nationalistic retards.
I want to say that Free Kashmir is on the cards.

Kashmir is Bleeding
Kashmir is bleeding,
Kashmiris are bleeding,
Bodies are bleeding,
Hearts are bleeding,
blood dipping from veins,
blood dipping from arteries,
some people are celebrating,
blood parties,
soil is red, rivers are red,
kashmiris are knot with blood thread,
every color is replaced with red,
every soul is forced dead,
sometimes you see headless, bodies,
sometimes you see bodies, headless,
people of Kashmir are peace less, restless,
Bullets and shells is the game of forces,
youths are taught, jail courses,
Eyes are blinded, legs are broken,
mothers are left, unspoken,
Kashmir is receiving rain of tears,
the world enjoys, no one cares,
Kashmir is a story of children less parent, parent less children,
unknown graves, land of martyr’s,
half widows and full widows,
disappearances and PSA’s,
custodial killings and killing at doors,
Kashmiri’s are kept under wicked veil,
so that their pains, no one feel,
The stream of blood is kept flowing,
Kashmiri’s are forced to keep roaring,
when will this blood shedding come to an end, o! world?
when will we live fearless, and bold?
Poem: Kashmir is Burning
Koi awaz ab uthaye ki kashmir jal raha hai
Koi insaf ab dilaye ki kashmir jal raha hai
Har fard hai pareshan, bechain o dil shikasta
Koi marham inhein lagaye ki kashmir jal raha hai
Maon ki goad suni, har baap tadap raha hai
Koi inki sunle haye ki kashmir jal eaha hai
Zalim hai sena tane, mazloom hai besahara
Koi zulm ab mitaye ki kashmir jal raha hai
Din mai bhi hai andhera, khurshed bhi hai benoor
Koi shamma banke aaye ki kashmir jal raha hai
Poem: Kashmiri Woman
No one knows her here by her name,
the one who is sitting mum
there on a wooden log,
the woman whose son was slaughtered
with a chainsaw,
is the only identity she has
in this refugee camp.
Poem: Kashmiri Family
The night they fled,
leaving behind their village, home, hearth
and half-cooked bread on the stove,
who had come to see them
a night before that night?
And why didn’t they open their windows
and door, for anyone after that?
Even before they could tell us,
why they had not been able to look
into the eyes of their daughters
ever since then…
a *Chinar falls,
making a creaking sound,
they could never tell us all,
what they really wanted to…!
Poem: Kashmir
They have in their memories
their home, and the only flower
blooming in their backyard,
and a cot left outside,
soaking in the pouring rain,
the night they fled.
They have in their memories,
their dialogues, laughter,
and sweet sun,
and everything else,
they could not bring along,
with themselves,
and their little ones,
who did not return home,
after they went to play,
soon after the day,
when snow in the valley
had melted away!
Poem: Kashmiri Hates India
They set off explosives in their roots,
and separated them from their lands,
I wonder, what did they whisper in their ears,
and separated them from their lands?
The snow storms hit the valley, striking Chinars,
where would the fallen Chinars go now?
They will dry up, and set ablaze,
we all know that,
we all know, that their ashes
would still like to return
but to their valleys only.
Kashmir Day Quotes
Kashmir Day is not a day when people get a public holiday in Pakistan. It has become a very important day for Pakistanis. On this day, they stand united to show their devotions for Kashmir and Kashmiri people. They send different SMS and quotes to their friends and relatives to show solidarity with Kashmiri brethren.
They are fighting a continuous war to get freedom from the Indian occupation. Indian armed forces are trying to press their voices for freedom by slaughtering the Kashmiris. But they cannot make their voices silent as Pakistanis are standing with them united. The 5th Feb is a symbol of Kashmiris’ voice on the international forum so that they could get their rights and live a free life.
Pakistan is always with them in every difficult time so that they could not be suppressed by the Indian forces. They make a big nation, and they need to decide their fate by a freedom referendum. Pakistan supports their rights as they are also human beings beyond their religion. Indian does not want to let the occupied land go. That’s why it is violating human rights and wants then Kashmiris to be Indian slaves forever. However, Pakistan supports the Kashmir resolution and their freedom movement wholeheartedly. On the issue of Kashmir, all ruling and opposition parties, religious parties and even the people from every walk of life are united.
The quotes, I am going to discuss here will also explain how Pakistani people feel about Kashmir and Kashmiri people. These quotes explain the feelings of Pakistani people wherever they are. It does not matter they are living in Pakistan thousands of miles away from Kashmiri people. Still, their hearts beat with Kashmiris all the time. The quotes below are from the people from every walk of life. These quotes are from the political leaders, Ulamas, and writers of Pakistan to show their true feelings for Kashmir and Kashmiris.
India is using troops in Kashmir. They are losing the battle of heart and minds. It’s like treating cancer with dispirin. (Imran Khan)
We must learn from history; there is no military solution for the Kashmir issue…we have to understand this reality. (Pervez Musharraf)
I will take back Kashmir, all of it, and I will not leave behind a single inch of it because, like the other provinces, it belongs to Pakistan. (Bilawal Bhutto Zardari)
“The Tug of War between India and Pakistan continues, as Kashmir bleeds”
Suna Hai Bohat Sasta Hai Khoon Wahan
Ik Basti, Jisay Log Kashmir Kehtay Hain
Is Aas Pe Aarish Hum Ne Zindagi Luta Di
Meri Khaak Se Watan Mien Kuch To Haryaali Hogi
Yaran-E-Jahan Kehte Hain
Kashmir Ha Jannat
Jannat Kisi Kafir Ko Mili Ha Na Mily Gi !!
INSHAH ALLAH
It’s Better to Die! Fighting for Freedom, Then! To Live Life in Slave
Say “NO” to Indian BRUTALITY in KASHMIR
Aaj Wo Kashmir Hai Mehkum-o-Majboor-o-Faqeer
Kal Jisay Ahl-e-Nazar Kehtay Thay Iran-e-Sagheer
Kashmir Day Speeches
On 5th Feb, there are different seminars and rallies in all over Pakistan to pay tribute to Kashmiris for sacrificing their lives for the freedom movement. In Pakistan, 5th Feb is observed as a public holiday that was first observed in 1990 in Pakistan.
It was not only in 1990, but in 1975, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the then president of Pakistan announced a nationwide strike on 5th February. It was announced to support Kashmiris in their freedom movement and to ensure Pakistani support for them in every crucial moment.
Kashmiris are sacrificing their lives for the security of their lands, and till now, Indian armed forces are helpless before Kashmiri people. The Kashmiri people hate India and Indian forces. They do not want them to interrupt their freedom. They want to get their country back from foreign occupation and want to live a free life.
Pakistan supports the rights of Kashmiri people and wants India to set the land free and let the Kashmiri people live a peaceful life. But India has occupied Kashmir due to its geographical importance. Kashmiris are entirely resolute to make their land free of foreign occupation.
They want to aware the rest of the world about the atrocities of the Indian armed forces on Kashmiris. So, in the entire world, 5th Feb is observed as a day when Kashmiri people and even Pakistan can represent the rights of Kashmiris. It is on 5th Feb that different parties, religious leaders and organizations hold seminars to let the world know what is going on in Kashmir. They make the people aware of the cruelties of India over the Kashmiris.
Now, some straightforward people in Indian media also support fairly to Kashmiri people’s rights. They also want the Kashmiris to decide their own fate. So, due to the media, there is great awareness to the people of the world regarding what is going on in Kashmir and what should be the solution.

Kashmir Day Posters
Every year Pakistan observes 5th Feb as a Kashmir Day. This day is very important in the lives of Pakistanis whether living in Pakistan or abroad. Every Pakistani observes 5th Feb as a solidarity day for Kashmiri Brethren.
They pay tribute to Kashmiris for struggling against the cruelties and atrocities of Indian armed forces by sending them SMS, quotes, posters and even videos regarding 5th Feb. Kashmir Day is not only a public holiday for Pakistanis but also a reminder for the rest of the world regarding the sacrifices of Kashmiris and their usurped rights by the Indian Armed Forces.
On this day, Pakistani people use to send SMS and posters showing devotion and a new inspiration for the freedom movement of Kashmir. The poster competitions are held in different organizations to encourage them to make unique and novel posters regarding 5th Feb. Kashmir day is not only considered important in Pakistan but also Azad Jammu Kashmir.
They also observe this day as a Solidarity Day for the people living in the occupied part of Kashmir. Many people participate in poster and speech competitions to show their skills and talent. The only purpose of organizing such competitions is to show the Kashmiris and the world that Kashmir is still bleeding and Pakistan is standing united with Kashmiris in every crucial time. In various parts of the country, the people make a human-made chain of hands to show the unity with the Kashmiris in their difficult times.
Kashmir Day History
Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed officially in Pakistan on 5th Feb every year. The first time, it was observed in 1975 when the President of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto declared that there would be a nationwide strike on 5th Feb to show devotion for Kashmir resolution. Later, In 1990, Qazi Hussain Ahmad suggested the ruling party of Pakistan to announce 5th Feb as a Solidarity Day to Kashmiri people. The then Chief Minister of Punjab, Nawaz Sharif declared 5th Feb as a public holiday to show the solidarity towards Kashmiri people. The question arises that what happened at that time that the CM Punjab announced this day as a solidarity day? Let me explain. In 1990, the Indian Government appointed a new governor of Occupied Kashmir to Gug Mohan. Kashmiris protested against this decision, and they boycotted the new governor to show the world the true face of India. It was a historic protest when the Indian forces brutally martyred a large number of Kashmiri people. The aroma of their blood was prevailing in the entire Kashmir valley. They were tortured by the Indian forces brutally for protesting against the Indian government. However, no cruelty could make them retreated from their resolution. So, 5th Feb was declared a solidarity day in Pakistan by the then CM Punjab.
So, It has been a part of Pakistan public holidays since 1990. It is not observed as a public holiday, however. The people belonging to different walks of life organize various speech and post competitions to show the world how Kashmiris are struggling against the foreign occupation. The people in Pakistan show their support to Kashmiris in their struggle against Indian armed forces.
Kashmir Day Songs

Pakistani singers do not forget them and compose different songs to make the Kashmiris well aware of the support of Pakistani people with them. It is celebrated officially as a solidarity day for Kashmiri brethren. Even the official media channel of Pakistani armed forces releases the songs on this memorable day to commemorate the memories of martyred Kashmiris.
Different schools and organizations show their unity with the Kashmiris by organizing Kashmir Day songs competitions. The inspiring words are used to show the feelings of Kashmiris in the songs. Here are a few songs regarding Kashmir Day.

SRINAGAR, India — Kashmiri poet Zareef Ahmad, 80, has unmatchable energy. He talks animatedly and feels passionately about his past. His study is filled floor to ceiling with books in Urdu, English and Farsi — some of which he has authored.
Ahmad won India's highest award for literature. But one of his most prized books is a small notebook filled with handwritten notes in Urdu.
Carefully cataloged are exact dates and locations of the hundreds of chinar trees he has planted in various parts of Kashmir for over 30 years. "I have planted them in police stations, government offices and universities, where they can use its shade to cool off tensions," he says.

The Himalayan region he calls home — hailed for its picturesque alpine beauty — has been roiled by conflict for decades, with both India and Pakistan staking claim to it. When Indians mark 75 years of independence this month, Ahmad and others in Kashmir may feel there's not much to celebrate.
A painful history
Pakistan was created as a homeland for the Subcontinent's Muslims when it and India emerged independent from British-ruled India in August 1947. But Kashmir's Hindu maharaja decided his Muslim-majority princely state would join India after armed tribesman from Pakistan invaded the region in October 1947.

India and Pakistan fought a yearlong war over control of Muslim-majority Kashmir. The war ended with a U.N.-brokered cease-fire leaving Kashmir divided between the two young nations.
A United Nations-brokered cease-fire ended those hostilities in 1949. But over the decades, the two nuclear-armed neighbors have fought other wars over Kashmir and there have been more crises. Today, both India and Pakistan administer some parts of the territory. In India, it's called Jammu and Kashmir, and in Pakistan, it's known as Azad (Free) Kashmir.
In India, Kashmir has become emblematic of the country's recent authoritarian slide under a Hindu nationalist-led government. In August 2019, India revoked Jammu and Kashmir's constitutionally guaranteed special status, canceling its partial autonomy. Indian troops poured into the streets, the internet in Jammu and Kashmir was shut down for an extended period into the following year, phone service was cut and the media were severely restricted.
Today, there is an uneasy calm in the valley. People fear speaking out in public, press freedoms have been limited and local politics is dysfunctional and unresponsive to Kashmiris' everyday needs.
"While Indians celebrate their independence from [British] subjugation, they must also introspect as to what kind of union gets created by force," says Mirza Saaib Beg, a Kashmiri human rights lawyer. "And whether such forced unions merit celebration."
Opportunities have faded for diplomatic solutions
Zareef Ahmad's generation, born before India's Partition, remembers a time when a resolution to the Kashmir conflict seemed to be within reach. They hoped to see a return to self-rule.
"Kashmir is a nationality of its own, a civilization of its own, with more than 5,000 years of history," Ahmad says.
He lives in the older part of Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-administered Kashmir. His home is in an area surrounded by a Sufi shrine, a Hindu temple and a gurudwara, a Sikh place of worship.

"Kashmir's was always a composite culture, until India and Pakistan were divided on religious lines. We saw religion become a huge part of our division only after the countries were born," says Ahmad.
He and his generation expected a resolution to come from diplomacy and dialogue. The newly created United Nations got involved. India and Pakistan were initially led by statesmen like Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Liaquat Ali Khan. Kashmiris had their own leaders who exuded promise.
But in successive decades, the opportunities for a diplomatic resolution died a slow, painful death.

in 1953, India dismissed and then jailed the most charismatic Kashmiri leader, Sheikh Abdullah , as Kashmir's prime minister. "We felt betrayed," says Ahmed.
A hoped-for referendum to decide Kashmir's future never came.
"We extended a hand of friendship to India, but it cut our palm," says Ahmad.
Insurgency and army response
These days, Ahmad considers himself lucky to live with his son and grandsons.
"Not many Kashmiris have the joy of seeing their offspring alive — let alone live under the same roof," he explains. Violence and bloodshed have claimed the lives of many younger Kashmiris.
In the late 1980s, Kashmir exploded because the central government rigged elections in the region, argues writer and senior researcher Alpana Kishore . "The chief minister had been summarily dismissed, a puppet regime had been put in his place," she says.

Kashmiris lost faith in a secular, democratic India bit by bit, she says. The 1990s were arguably Kashmir's bloodiest years. According to official government figures, more than 1,700 were killed between 1990 and 2021 by armed guerilla fighters who are fighting the Indian state.
More than 150,000 people fled the area and resettled in other parts of India. While there are no official public figures on the number of people killed by India's security forces, Sweden's Uppsala Conflict Data Program puts the figure at around 19,000 for the same period.
"There have been so many bad memories in our schooldays, because those days, the violence was at its peak," said Shafkat Raina, Ahmad's godson, a documentary filmmaker who is 45 and grew up in Kashmir's restive Anantnag district.
He recalls ducking under the benches in his classroom as firing broke out between militants and the Indian army outside.
"Tension was not only in school, this tension followed us our whole life — whether it is married life or social life. It disturbed us, everywhere," he says.
As the militancy took on a religious color, most members of Kashmir's small Hindu population fled the region altogether, leaving behind jobs and property.
In light of the previous decades' diplomatic failures, many Muslim Kashmiris of Raina's generation believed for a time that a resolution to the Kashmir conflict could come from insurgency against India, with help from Pakistan.
Kashmiri youth illegally crossed de facto border, known as the Line of Control, into Pakistan to acquire weapons and to learn how to use them against the Indian military, which became a familiar presence in Jammu and Kashmir starting in 1990.
Militants "were praised. They were looked at like heroes," says Raina.
His neighborhood had two houses that militants occupied. "They used to come play cricket with us," he recalls.
"In the 1990s, there was great interest in Pakistan as a savior," says Kishore. "What happened [after the 1990s] is that [Kashmiris] understood that Pakistan is not going to go to war with India over Kashmir."
An uneasy "integration" with India
Those born in the 1990s or later are habituated with violence and conflict.
As India increased its military presence in Jammu and Kashmir, observers recorded an increase in torture and other human rights violations by security forces.

"Hundreds of civilians, including women and children, have been extrajudicially executed... Such killings and hundreds of deaths in custody — by far the highest in any Indian state — are facilitated by laws that provide the security forces with virtual immunity from prosecution," Amnesty International reported in 1995 .
Today, it's difficult to know how many Indian security forces are stationed in Kashmir. The Indian government doesn't publish numbers. But troops are visible on most streets and public squares.

In a 2015 report , the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society estimated that there were between 650,000 and 750,000 Indian soldiers in the region. It's one of the most recent estimates available, as leaders of JKCCS have since been arrested.
Reaching the Pulwama district, in southern Kashmir, from Srinagar means crossing dozens of army checkpoints and barricades.
"Imagine being stopped many times and being asked for identification before reaching your own home," says Aamir Ahmad Bund, 25, a law student and president of the Association of Pellet Survivors, an organization for Kashmiris who have rubber bullets lodged in their bodies. He is among thousands who have lost their eyes due to attacks by India's military.
Bund was protesting in his village in Pulwama in 2016 when security forces fired rubber bullets, he says. The bullet that hit his right eye blinded him in that eye.
"There are several [rubber bullets] still lodged in my body," he says, pointing at his arms, torso and legs.
"No one even asks us what we think is a resolution to this conflict," he says.
With Jammu and Kashmir's limited autonomy broken in 2019, the government declared that the conflict was resolved and the region's integration with the rest of India was complete.
But for many Kashmiris, it has come at too high a price.
" When God asks me what I have, I will say I only have the trees I planted," says Ahmad, the poet. "Everything else is transient."
Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch has said Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people for the just and peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolutions.
Addressing news briefing in Islamabad, she said Kashmir Solidarity Day will be observed on Monday to express solidarity with Kashmiri brethren.
The spokesperson said elaborate programs have been outlined to mark the day.

This book is a must-read for sociolinguists interested in language as it relates to identity. It is also useful for those studying language planning and policy, politics of language, minority languages and dialects, and language loss and attrition. It provides a comprehensive overview of the existing body of literature on language and identity and can be valuable as a reference for any work that examines identity within speech communities. The unique context of this study, attrition in a language within its own homeland, makes it an essential reference for any linguist researching language loss in a non-immigrant speech community. https://linguistlist.org/issues/29/29-581.html

Urdu was introduced in the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir as an official language in 1889 replacing many centuries of Persian in official patronage. The language grew steadily in use with the general populace of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. With distinct political regions in the state, where people speak different mother tongues, Urdu began to act as a cohesive and assimilating language that helped in merging the three regions of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir together. Urdu was introduced in schools and colleges even before the regional languages of Kashmiri and Dogri. Early poets and literary figures of Kashmir enthusiastically took up Urdu to compete with their peers and icons outside Kashmir, but most of them could not register success in these efforts. Many poets had to resort to their mother tongues, like Kashmiri and Dogri, to be recognized and adored by masses. Prose writings continued in Urdu as it was recognized mostly in the literary and academic circles. In Kashmir, there is a growing crisis of identity in the masses to either identify with Kashmiri or with Urdu as their language of preference in their day to day activities. My contention in this paper is that those who took up education early in Kashmir, like in the city of Srinagar, find it very easy to accept Urdu as their chosen language of preference –both inside and outside the realm of their private spheres. Those from the rural areas unequivocally consider Kashmiri as their primary language. But there are many between the two exclusively urban and ruler groups in Kashmir who remain torn in their devotion to either their primarily local language or the official one that is Urdu. The government efforts to promote regional languages –especially Dogri and Kashmiri- in the last two decades has only deepened the sense of regionalism and identity crisis among the people, with Urdu facing backlash many a time in Jammu and Ladakh provinces.

Pakistan is home to several indigenous communities. However, life in cities is much more challenging than in under-developed areas. Due to social mobility, economic uplift, and better educational and health opportunities; communities migrate from their local towns to cities. Hence, each province reflects a diverse population and cultural groups speaking their mother tongues, practicing different religions, and following their cultural norms independently. Therefore, this study aims to explore the case of young migrant Kashmiri speakers who are residing in different urban parts of Karachi. As the focus is to identify the language use and identity patterns of young Kashmiri speakers in the presence of dominant languages and cultures. Consequently, the qualitative case study has been undertaken using purposive sampling to know about the scenario of young Kashmiris. For this purpose, data were collected from 05 participants using semi-structured interviews and the responses were analyze...

Language plays significant role in shaping individual identities and in distinguishing how one group is different from another group. Although a group may distinguish itself by its racial features, the type of dress its members wear, the food they eat, the houses they build or the group's totem, insignia, tattoos and specific practices, it is the language that distinguishes groups of people most precisely. This paper examines role of language in constructing individual identities in Pakistani context with a focus on how people leave their indigenous languages and choose any other powerful language to construct their identity. Main areas of this study are how language and different factors (historical, social, global, political etc) are responsible for making individual identities. Uniqueness of this paper lies in its investigation in this field and overview of different literary concepts on the topic. Due to nature of the research in the field, data was collected through questionnaires and interviews from the people belonging to different parts of Sindh. The results found that the way people speak multi languages in different contexts reflect their individual identity. Thus, this research may provide foundation for understanding the roles of language in constructing identities.

Arabic a language of the Semitic family of languages, Persian a member of the Indo-Iranian group of languages; and Kashmiri and Urdu, members of the Indo-Aryan family of languages are the most significant contact languages in the linguistically heterogeneous setting of the Kashmiri speech community. Existing side-by-side, these languages serve different sociolinguistic purposes and are assigned different roles. The linguistic amalgamation of these languages has resulted in the development of a considerable amount of lexicon common to all of them in general, but Kashmiri and Urdu in particular. The present paper explores the range of the Kashmiri-Urdu common lexicon. It also examines the extent to which Arabic and Persian have contributed to this shared lexical treasure. Finally,an exhaustive list of Kashmiri-Urdu lexical items used in various social domains of Kashmiri speakers (religion, administration, medicine, education, language and literature, law, and every day conversation) is presented and analyzed.

I presented this paper in the "Pakistan Mother Languages Literature Festival' held on February 20-21, 2016 at Lok Virsa, Islamabad. Primarily I represented "Wakhi Language of Wakhan Corridor, also spoken in Upper Hunza (Gojal), Upper Ishkoman Valley; Burughil valley of district Chitral; (Pakistan); Toshqughan Tajik Autonomous Area and Tajik Milizeh of Zinjiang Province of China. This is one several endangered languages spoken in and around PAMIRs as a result of growing external communication networks, electronic media, ever increasing tourists and increasing number of youth from these areas to other parts of the globe.
—This paper is restricted to the investigation of linguistic variation among the Kashmiri speakers at the level of phonology and lexicon of their language in accordance with certain social variables, viz-a-viz. religion, education, region / socioeconomic status, age and occupation. In the present paper, an effort has been devoted to examine as to how the structure of the Kashmiri language varies at the level of phonology and lexicon, in accordance with above mentioned social variables. It also takes into account the possible reasons behind this variation. The present paper explores as to how the social heterogeneity of the Kashmiri speech community is reflected in the linguistic behavior of its speakers, and gives rise to variations in the use of their language at the level of phonology and lexicon. The paper begins with giving a brief introduction about language variation, social variables, and linguistic variables. It also discusses the historical perspective of language variation, and throws light on the related literature by discussing some important studies of variation carried out by different scholars of linguistics from time to time. In this study an attempt has been made to picturize the social structure of the Kashmiri speech community in terms of its social stratification/ and social heterogeneity. The paper also discusses the research methodology adopted in carrying out this study.

Language and culture are allied and interrelated with each other as language carries culture with it while culture depends upon language. The mother language is also one of the most striking elements of any individual's life. At the same time, it also works as an integral tool in the uplift of any nation's future generations. Native language (L1)not only plays the main role in the communication process but also establishes an identity to an individual's entity as well as personality building, a certain class of the masses, and a nation at large. Mother language is a powerful element that engineers the psychological system or structure of an individual to secure the values, norms, history, and trends of a nation. This study has been carried out to focus and discuss the four significant grounds which include the development of a psychological hierarchy of a person with the help of mother tongue, nexuses of culture with mother language, the significance of mother tongue in ...

UN envoy urges international solidarity with Haiti as gang violence spirals
Facebook Twitter Print Email
As gang violence increases in Haiti, the international community must continue to stand in solidarity with the population, the UN Special Representative for the country told the Security Council on Monday.
“Today, it pains me to note that all speeches and callings had not avoided that some of the worst scenarios for Haiti have become realities in recent months and weeks,” said Maria Isabel Salvador, who also heads the UN mission in Haiti, BINUH .
Speaking from the capital, Port-au-Prince, she said it was impossible to overstate the increase in gang activity in the city and beyond, along with the deterioration of the human rights situation and the deepening of the humanitarian crisis.
Last October, the Security Council authorized the deployment of a Multinational Security Support mission (MSS) to assist Haiti’s embattled police force.
Although more than five million people, roughly half the population, are going hungry and hundreds of thousands have been displaced, a $674 humanitarian appeal for Haiti is less than nine per cent funded.
Attacks and confrontations
Ms. Salvador recalled that in early March, gangs mounted coordinated attacks against key state infrastructure, including several police stations and two of the main prisons in Port-au-Prince, as well as educational and health facilities, and religious sites.
They also launched several attacks against the Presidential Palace, sparking violent clashes with the Haitian National Police (HNP), leading to multiple casualties. Furthermore, gang confrontations around the international airport have forced all commercial airlines to halt services.
She noted that roughly 2,500 persons were killed or injured due to gang violence during the first quarter of the year. This represents a 53 per cent increase over the previous reporting period, making it the most violent quarter since BINUH began recording statistics two years ago.
Deploy Multinational Support Mission
Ms. Salvador said the national police - assisted by Haiti’s “modest” Armed Forces and advised by BINUH and other international partners - have deployed immense efforts to contain the violence while being targeted by the gangs.
“Nevertheless, the severity of the current crisis underscores the gaps in capacity within the national structures and the urgent need for international assistance, namely through the immediate deployment of the MSS,” she said.
On the political front, she noted that Haitian stakeholders have worked to put their differences aside in efforts to find a common path towards restoring democratic institutions, including establishing a Transitional Presidential Council following the resignation announcement by Prime Minister Ariel Henry in March.
Security critical for progress
A number of other bodies are also expected to be established, including a National Security Council and a Provisional Electoral Council “which is urgently required to set plans in motion for the organization of elections.”
Ms. Salvador noted that despite the recent positive developments on the political front, improving the security situation remains a condition sine qua non for further progress.
“I cannot stress enough the need to assist Haiti with its efforts to reestablish security,” she said.
“One and a half years since Haiti requested assistance to enhance security and more than six months since this Council authorized the deployment of the MSS, we must continue to stress the importance of its urgent deployment.”
Children in the crosshairs
Catherine Russell, head of the UN Children’s Fund ( UNICEF ), appealed for greater support for the humanitarian plan for Haiti. Of the roughly 5.5 million Haitians who need assistance, three million are children.
She said boys and girls are being injured or killed in the violence each day. Some are being recruited, or join armed groups out of sheer desperation. Recent UNICEF data indicates that anywhere from 30 to per 50 cent of armed groups have children in their ranks.
"Women and girls continue to be targeted with extreme levels of gender-based and sexual violence,” she added.
“Last year, thousands of cases of sexual violence were reported, many of which were perpetrated against children. The true number of cases is likely much higher.”
Humanitarian activities have also fallen victim to the violence as access to the port in the capital has been cut off because of armed group operations in the area.
Ms. Russell said nearly 300 containers of humanitarian supplies are now stranded, including 17 UNICEF containers loaded with nutrition supplements, as well as neonatal, maternal and medical supplies.
Stand with Haiti
The Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime ( UNODC ) Ghada Waly, said the violence "is made possible by the continued influx of guns into Haiti and is supported by corruption."
Recent events also suggest concerning signs of collusion between different gangs, she added.
The latest wave of violence saw reported fighting between gangs, but also signs of collaboration between certain groups to carry out attacks.
Furthermore, the attacks targeting key infrastructure were another reminder of the significant increase in firepower that the gangs possess, as weapons continue to flow into Haiti.
“We must stand with Haiti’s institutions and citizens in confronting violence, corruption, and chaos, and in working for a more stable and secure future for the people of Haiti,” she said.
