Bachelor’s Degrees in Speech-Language Pathology Through Schools with CAA-Accredited Grad Programs

Even as an undergrad, you can take the first step toward a career in speech-language pathology by majoring in communicative sciences and disorders or speech-language pathology through a quality program.

Of course, a master’s degree is the minimum educational requirement to become licensed and certified as an SLP, so you’ll need to be prepared to continue your education at the graduate level. But if you’re at the stage where you’re considering your four-year degree options, choosing a major in the area of communicative sciences and disorders is by far the best way to lay the foundation for advanced study and experience.

  • Emerson College - Master's in Speech-Language Pathology online - Prepare to become an SLP in as few as 20 months. No GRE required. Scholarships available.
  • NYU Steinhardt - NYU Steinhardt's Master of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders online - ASHA-accredited. Bachelor's degree required. Graduate prepared to pursue licensure.
  • Arizona State University - Online - Online Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science - Designed to prepare graduates to work in behavioral health settings or transition to graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology.

Earning an Undergrad Degree at a School that Offers an Accredited Master’s Streamlines the Transition

While most accredited graduate programs admit students without a bachelor’s degree related to SLP, a background in the communicative sciences will give you everything you need to transition easily into a graduate program without having to scramble to complete prereqs. If your undergrad program is housed in the same department that has a CAA-accredited master’s, that transition is completely seamless.

Schools with accredited master’s programs in SLP structure the curriculum to build on the foundational bachelor’s program. Some schools even offer 5-year accelerated programs that include both undergrad and grad courses that result in a master’s a full 12-months faster than taking the programs separately. This saves time and money, and quickly gets you out into the field where you belong, providing your much-needed services to clients.

Speech-Pathology Bachelor’s Programs at Schools with CAA-Accredited Grad Programs Organized by State

Schools throughout the country offer bachelor’s degrees in communicative sciences and disorders through programs that are offered online, partially online, and through traditional campus-based programs. These programs will allow you to gain clinical experience, learn the foundational principles of speech and hearing sciences, and prepare you for the graduate degree required to become nationally-certified and state-licensed.

Other programs are out there, but these are the ones available through schools that also offer the CAA-accredited graduate program you need to enter professional practice. If you’re looking at your undergraduate options and you’re plans involve eventually going on to a master’s, this list may help provide the guidance you need to streamline that process.

School profiles in the ASHA EdFind searchable database are updated annually based on information collected through the CSD Education Survey. Information gathered in the survey is also published in state and national aggregate reports and collated in CSD education trend data reports for undergraduate programs .

CAA does not accredit undergraduate programs. Current as of January 2018, the bachelor’s programs shown here are housed in schools with CAA-accredited master’s programs and programs that are in the application or candidacy phase of the accreditation process.

California State University - Long Beach

Long Beach, CA •

Alum: I loved my experience at CSULB. I did get wait listed from the dorms during my freshman year, so I would like to see some more housing options for freshmen who aren't local to the area. However, the school did add another dorm building this last year, so that is nice to see that they are addressing the issue. I joined Greek life for 2 years and met some life long friends who are kind and down-to-earth. I have great relationships with a few of my psychology professors and I loved my experience working on campus as a research assistant and a teaching assistant. I think that the psychology program was pretty enriching and I feel that CSULB prepared me to tackle graduate school. Another thing that I would change would be the parking situation. If it were possible, I would love to see another parking structure to be constructed possibly near the library. Overall, CSULB is a great school for a phenomenal cost! ... Read 4,891 reviews

Alum: I had the unique experience of transferring to San Diego State University during the pandemic. My junior year was fully online so I didn't get to experience campus life or get a feel for the community the school has built, as it's very hard to make connections with a lot of people through a screen. The professors were all very understanding and accommodating. In my time here I learned a lot of valuable information from professors who are well spoken and knowledgable. It never felt like the coursework I was given was just busywork, but applicable to what my career goal was. My senior year I did partially online and on campus, but at this point I just wanted to be finished. I wish I had given campus life a bigger chance that way I could've made connections with other people, but unfortunately I didn't get to experience that side of SDSU. However, I can attest that their academics were and still are very valuable to me! ... Read 5,425 reviews

Freshman: Attending this college for one year it has been a smooth transition from high school to college. It isn't as scary as some people might put it; there are many opportunities for yourself and you can freely choose whatever you do in your school life. Cerritos College is one of the best community colleges around LA and most people here are friendly and always here to provide and help you. Some changes could be better security in the campus, better food, and more resting areas. Not only do these changes need to happen but it would also be beneficial to make the campus a better space for students and professors. Even though there are changes needed overall the school is interesting and gives such a huge opportunity for students who are in its local area. ... Read 1,345 reviews

Freshman: Overall, I am quite pleased with my experience here. I had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Bridge Program, which allowed me to spend a week at the college before the academic year began. During this time, I had the chance to experience college life firsthand, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made. The program made me feel welcomed and helped me to establish connections. By the time the school year started, I already knew people and felt comfortable. We spent a lot of time together, eating meals and hanging out, which helped ease any nerves I might have had otherwise. If it weren't for the Summer Bridge Program, I believe my experience would have been quite different, and I might have felt even more nervous coming into the school. Sophomore: I mostly focused on my studies so my experience was most with professors and fellow peers. I would say the instructors were a mixed bag. I had a few really good ones and I had a fair amount of instructors that seemed to forget that they are "teaching". Some treated me like I should know things already (ceramics, sculpture) and didn't teach but reprimand. Some teachers were absent except an occasional note online. Overall my experience was mediocre. I am excited to transfer to see what it is like at the CSU level. Look out Fullerton, I am READY! ... Read 1,428 reviews

The 15 Best Speech-Language Pathology Programs in the US

Speech pathologists provide a crucial foundation in the diagnosis and treatment of speech and communication disorders. With a rising need among the baby boomers for care after strokes or dementia, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the field’s growth over the next decade at 29 percent.

New research and early treatment for children with communication issues stemming from conditions like spectrum disorders also mean more need for speech pathology professionals, from practitioners to educators and researchers.

With job responsibilities including the diagnosis and assessment of physical issues—like the efficiency of swallowing musculature, or levels of hearing loss—the speech pathologist must have specific medical training. Speech pathologists also need training in linguistics and writing, meaning future speech pathologists need a solid background in sciences and in humanities.

Most speech pathology positions require at least a Master’s degree, and each state maintains its own licensing and certification requirements. Many speech pathologists pursue specializations within the field, sometimes focusing on an age group or on a particular disorder and its treatment.

Excellent programs in speech pathology can be found across the country on large and small campuses, in urban and rural areas. According to U.S. News , the following 15 schools rank as the best Speech-Language Pathology programs at the time of this writing .

The 15 schools below furnish excellent training and a range of specialty programs for future speech pathologists, but applicants should be sure to check their state’s requirements before beginning any graduate program.

Here are the 15 best SLP programs in the US.
