Use the dropdown boxes below to explore the kind of modules that may be available to you on the course if you choose the English Literature and Creative Writing route. Some will be core, and then you'll have the flexibility to pick and choose others to tailor your learning to your specific interests.

Critical Skills in the Twenty-First Century

In this module, you will be introduced to the skills required for life in contemporary society. The module covers skills such as the following: argumentation, critical thinking, and clarity in written expression. Critical skills are practiced through the filter of “big ideas,” ranging from artificial intelligence to ecocriticism.

Discovering Literature

Writing and storytelling are as vital now as they have been since history began to be recorded by writers and storytellers. In this module, you will explore and learn about the importance of these fundamentals of literature from different approaches, different forms, different periods, and in their use in various media across time.

The Writer's Practice

Start your writing life by exploring the creative process in a range of mediums: poetry, prose fiction, playwriting and memoir. You will be challenged to define your territory as a writer and inspired by new creative processes. In your first year at Salford, you experiment with all your talents and discover your own writing practice.

The Romantic Period: The Sublime and the Gothic

Study literature emerging in a time of revolution and consider themes such as the rights of man, of woman, and of slaves, the sublime, childhood, empire, the self, and the gothic. This literary period refines and develops literary forms and styles from previous eras, as well as pursuing artistic experimentation, so this route explores language and form in detail in relation to key themes within their historical and cultural context.

Victorian Literature: Progress and Panic

You will enhance your skills in close analysis, studying 19th Century writing within a range of historical and theoretical contexts. Texts include novels, poetry, and non-fiction and the route covers a range of issues including class, culture, urban experience, women’s writing, decadence and identity.

You will choose 40 credits from these Creative Writing modules:

You will then choose 40 credits from these modules:

This module explores recent and contemporary texts in relation to critical issues such as authorship, narrative structure, linear progression, and identity. Selected texts will include novels, films and short stories.

This is a double creative writing module that runs throughout your final year. What's the literature and creative writing scene like in Greater Manchester?

We're proud that Greater Manchester's literary and theatrical history is etched on the world map. Greater Manchester has produced iconic writers such as Thomas De Quincey, Howard Jacobson, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anthony Burgess, Jeanette Winterson and Lemn Sissay.

There is a thriving creative writing scene here covering all kinds of genres, and regular literary festivals and events that are a great source of inspiration and ambition for our students. There are also lots of bookshops, libraries and archives to be explored.

Do you have any social channels I can follow you on?

The English department have a Instagram , Twitter and Facebook account you can follow so you can see the great things our staff get up to.

How can I best prepare for my studies at the University of Salford?

If you're taking one of our degrees with Creative Writing in the title, our tutor David Savill (a famous published novelist) recommends that you keep working on your writing, so you have a readymade store of work to draw on in your first year workshops.

If you're taking a degree with drama in the title, Szilvi Naray-Davey (actress, translator and programme leader for Drama) recommends that you try your best to take in as many plays as you can, whether in person or online.

If you're taking a degree with Literature in the title, you should focus on the writing that makes you happy - there is space for a personal, focused project in the final year dissertation.

If you're taking a degree with Language in the title, listen for the language all around you - whether that's children in your family learning their first words or different accents you encounter. Start noticing language in the world and note down anything you find interesting so your expert tutors can explain it.

What career pathways have Salford graduates followed?

You may be asking 'what can you do with an English degree?' Our students go into so many wonderful careers: writing, public relations, teaching, journalism, academia. The exciting thing about English is that it gives you the skills for the jobs of the future. Your communication skills will set you up to be a flexible, independent thinker who can deal with the changing nature of work in the twenty-first century. We also offer an internship at a publishing house as well as other opportunities.

You can find more details of these opportunities  here .

How are students supported as they progress from college level study to university level?

We offer a free writing course to all of our students called Wordscope, which focuses on helping you to develop your writing skills, easing the transition from college to university. By participating in this course, you can learn to tackle common writing problems such as punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing.

For more information, you can take a look at the  Wordscope  webpage.

When can we expect our timetables?

Personalised timetables are sent to students when they register in September. We try our best to keep your timetable sensible and avoid you being in every day of the week. There are no lectures on a Wednesday afternoon then so that students can participate in clubs, societies and extracurricular activities.

You will have nine in-class hours a week, which will be a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops - alongside drop-in office hours and personal tutor meetings.

Easy Steps To Tackle Your Assignment

Let’s face it, writing assignments is nobody’s favourite thing about university life, but it’s still a key part for many students. If you’re looking for some advice on how to ace your next assignment, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll show you how to tackle your work with the Library’s support.

Read your assignment brief

First things first, you must make sure you know exactly what’s expected for this piece of work. Is it an essay or a report? What question do you need to answer? When is it due? You’ll find all of this and more on your assignment brief. Go through your brief and highlight the most important bits. If you don’t quite understand the task, check out the Library’s guide on making sense of your assignment brief .

Create an action plan

Ask anyone what the most difficult part of an assignment is, and they’re likely to say the same thing – getting started. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the size and/or importance of the task at hand. Creating a plan is a great way to tackle this hurdle.

First, list the steps you need to take to complete the work. Perhaps you need to find the main points you will discuss, write each segment, and then draw a winning conclusion. Once you’ve established these steps, you need to decide how you will complete them.

We recommend creating a work plan that is suitable for your preferred way of working and fits around your other commitments. You could assign each task to specific days/times in the weeks ahead. If you prefer a more flexible approach, you could set deadlines each week, such as by Friday you will have written your first section. Remember to go through your work at the end and make sure you’ve created a logical argument and stayed focused on the question.

It may also be a good idea to create a research plan. For this, you should list the points you’re going to be making as a set of subheadings, under which you can list any relevant academic literature that will aid your discussion. For more guidance on approaching an essay, check out our eLearning guide .

Student writing an assignment plan

Get the referencing right

A big mistake many students can make is leaving referencing to the very end. By doing this, you’re creating more work for yourself as you’ll have to go through your assignment at the end and search for every resource you used. It’s much easier to reference as you go. If you find that this method disrupts your workflow, you could highlight bits that need referencing as you work, then put the referencing list together as your last step.

It can take some time to get to grips with referencing. The key is to familiarise yourself with the style so you build your confidence and understanding. We have a dedicated referencing webpage with lots of support from video tips, guides, and examples to help you get it right.

Check, check, and check again

When you’ve finished writing, it’s important to check over your work to make sure you’ve answered the question and that your spelling and grammar is on point.

Once you’ve made the relevant edits, proofread your work again for any errors you may have missed. Reading your work out loud is a great way to spot little mistakes. Why not have our handy proofreading and editing guide open at the same time, so you know exactly what to look out for.

Know how to submit your work

It might seem obvious, but make sure you know how to submit your work. Your lecturer will tell you how and where to do this. If you’re asked to submit electronically through Blackboard using Turnitin, make sure you know where the submission folder is. We recommend that you familiarise yourself with Turnitin before the deadline.

Don’t leave handing in your work to the last minute. Our online submissions system is easy to use but – as is always the case with technology – there’s a slight chance that technical issues may arise. To combat this, submit your work with plenty of time to avoid unnecessary last-minute panic. And, as ever, we’ve plenty of submission advice on Blackboard .

Learn from feedback

It’s important to reflect on the comments you receive so that you can improve your work. Positive and critical feedback will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. For example, your tutor might point out that your ideas are good but need expanding, or that your grammar needs work. If you take this on board, your next essay is guaranteed to be even better than the last.

Do you struggle to take feedback well? Discover how you can reframe feedback and use it to develop yourself .

We hope you’ve found these tips useful and feel ready to smash your assignment. We’ve highlighted loads of helpful resources along the way, but it doesn’t stop there. The Library has a wealth of support available, from workshops to 1:1 sessions throughout the academic year.

We also recommend downloading the Library App , which allows you to access many of their resources on the go. With the app you can also reserve items and book study spaces.

Why is writing essays so hard?

Patterns and boring topics imposed by schools and universities are not very conducive to creativity and human development. Such essays are very difficult to write, because many are not interested in this and do not see the meaning of the text. There are a number of criteria that make it impossible to write essays:

  • Boring and incomprehensible topics. Many topics could be more interesting, but teachers formulate them in a way that makes you want to yawn.
  • Templates. 90% do not know how to make an essay interesting, how to turn this detailed answer to a question into a living story.
  • Fear of not living up to expectations. It seems to many that the essay is stupid and that they simply did not understand the question. There is a fear of getting a bad mark and disappointing the professor, parents and classmates. There is a fear of looking stupid and embarrassing in front of the team.
  • Lack of experience. People don't know what and how to write about. In order to make a good essay, you need to have a perfect understanding of the topic and have the skills of a writer.

That is why the company EssaysWriting provides its services. We remove the responsibility for the result from the clients and do everything to ensure that the scientific work is recognized.

Advice on planning and writing essays and dissertations

University essays differ from school essays in that they are less concerned with what you know and more concerned with how you construct an argument to answer the question. This means that the starting point for writing a strong essay is to first unpick the question and to then use this to plan your essay before you start putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard).

A really good starting point for you are these short, downloadable Tips for Successful Essay Writing and Answering the Question resources. Both resources will help you to plan your essay, as well as giving you guidance on how to distinguish between different sorts of essay questions.

You may find it helpful to watch this seven-minute video on six tips for essay writing which outlines how to interpret essay questions, as well as giving advice on planning and structuring your writing:

Different disciplines will have different expectations for essay structure and you should always refer to your Faculty or Department student handbook or course Canvas site for more specific guidance.

However, broadly speaking, all essays share the following features:

Essays need an introduction to establish and focus the parameters of the discussion that will follow. You may find it helpful to divide the introduction into areas to demonstrate your breadth and engagement with the essay question. You might define specific terms in the introduction to show your engagement with the essay question; for example, ‘This is a large topic which has been variously discussed by many scientists and commentators. The principle tension is between the views of X and Y who define the main issues as…’ Breadth might be demonstrated by showing the range of viewpoints from which the essay question could be considered; for example, ‘A variety of factors including economic, social and political, influence A and B. This essay will focus on the social and economic aspects, with particular emphasis on…..’

Watch this two-minute video to learn more about how to plan and structure an introduction:

The main body of the essay should elaborate on the issues raised in the introduction and develop an argument(s) that answers the question. It should consist of a number of self-contained paragraphs each of which makes a specific point and provides some form of evidence to support the argument being made. Remember that a clear argument requires that each paragraph explicitly relates back to the essay question or the developing argument.

  • Conclusion: An essay should end with a conclusion that reiterates the argument in light of the evidence you have provided; you shouldn’t use the conclusion to introduce new information.
  • References: You need to include references to the materials you’ve used to write your essay. These might be in the form of footnotes, in-text citations, or a bibliography at the end. Different systems exist for citing references and different disciplines will use various approaches to citation. Ask your tutor which method(s) you should be using for your essay and also consult your Department or Faculty webpages for specific guidance in your discipline.

Essay writing in science subjects

If you are writing an essay for a science subject you may need to consider additional areas, such as how to present data or diagrams. This five-minute video gives you some advice on how to approach your reading list, planning which information to include in your answer and how to write for your scientific audience – the video is available here:

A PDF providing further guidance on writing science essays for tutorials is available to download.

Short videos to support your essay writing skills

There are many other resources at Oxford that can help support your essay writing skills and if you are short on time, the Oxford Study Skills Centre has produced a number of short (2-minute) videos covering different aspects of essay writing, including:

  • Approaching different types of essay questions
  • Structuring your essay
  • Writing an introduction
  • Making use of evidence in your essay writing
  • Writing your conclusion

Extended essays and dissertations

Longer pieces of writing like extended essays and dissertations may seem like quite a challenge from your regular essay writing. The important point is to start with a plan and to focus on what the question is asking. A PDF providing further guidance on planning Humanities and Social Science dissertations is available to download.

Planning your time effectively

Try not to leave the writing until close to your deadline, instead start as soon as you have some ideas to put down onto paper. Your early drafts may never end up in the final work, but the work of committing your ideas to paper helps to formulate not only your ideas, but the method of structuring your writing to read well and conclude firmly.

Although many students and tutors will say that the introduction is often written last, it is a good idea to begin to think about what will go into it early on. For example, the first draft of your introduction should set out your argument, the information you have, and your methods, and it should give a structure to the chapters and sections you will write. Your introduction will probably change as time goes on but it will stand as a guide to your entire extended essay or dissertation and it will help you to keep focused.

The structure of  extended essays or dissertations will vary depending on the question and discipline, but may include some or all of the following:

  • The background information to - and context for - your research. This often takes the form of a literature review.
  • Explanation of the focus of your work.
  • Explanation of the value of this work to scholarship on the topic.
  • List of the aims and objectives of the work and also the issues which will not be covered because they are outside its scope.

The main body of your extended essay or dissertation will probably include your methodology, the results of research, and your argument(s) based on your findings.

The conclusion is to summarise the value your research has added to the topic, and any further lines of research you would undertake given more time or resources.

Tips on writing longer pieces of work

Approaching each chapter of a dissertation as a shorter essay can make the task of writing a dissertation seem less overwhelming. Each chapter will have an introduction, a main body where the argument is developed and substantiated with evidence, and a conclusion to tie things together. Unlike in a regular essay, chapter conclusions may also introduce the chapter that will follow, indicating how the chapters are connected to one another and how the argument will develop through your dissertation.
