Visual aids can help or hurt a presentation. Whether you are using PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, slides, video, a software interface, or other visual support, you need to make sure that the visuals won’t distract from the presentation. Many speakers have chosen abandon visual aids altogether and even proclaim that they are above using such tools. However, well-utilized visuals will significantly improve a presentation. This training will teach the best visual aid practices and offer the opportunity to practice techniques with individualized coaching feedback. Listeners will appreciate how the skillful use of visual aids truly enhances your presentations.

Speakers must prepare to answer real questions about their topic. Sometimes, listeners ask friendly, genuine questions, but often, you might be tasked with answering aggressive or set-up questions. In either case, the ability to handle even the most challenging question in a clear, comfortable, and competent manner is an important skill. Whether you have been called to answer questions at a congressional committee, in a sales meeting, or during a team presentation, this module will teach you how to hear and understand questions in order to respond with practical answers.

Have you ever wondered how some people always have the right thing to say at the right time? There is an art to handling yourself well in just about any setting—from dealing with an angry customer to holding a political debate or managing a contentious investor meeting.

Imagine yourself in front of the executive committee, the board of directors, the press, or a client, and someone requests that you speak on an unfamiliar topic. Perhaps you are asked a tough question that you hadn’t anticipated. What do you say? Thinking on your feet is a module that teaches you how to process and organize your thoughts quickly in a way that will help you communicate clearly and with confidence

What two words would you like people to say about you after you have left a meeting or a conversation? The answer defines your communication style. Style coaching is one of our most popular leadership and management offerings. Most crucial business communication occurs between leaders, managers, board members, and shareholders. Because Boards advise and direct management teams on key decisions, it is critical that leaders and managers clearly communicate the vision, metrics, and progress of the organization. Having worked with thousands of managers and board members, we have developed valuable insight into how relationships, presentations, handling questions, and more can affect your communication success. Whether you’re new to senior management or an old pro, this module will allow you to hone your Board and shareholder presentations and share your thoughts in a clear, concise manner. Our guidance will help you strengthen your relationships and effectiveness with your Board and shareholders.

Since the 1990s, coaching and mentoring have become widely used to develop employees in the business world and are important skills for anyone in a managerial or leadership role. Learn how to communicate in both coaching and mentoring styles while learning the differences between the two. Among other things, learn Socratic questioning, goal setting, skills in accountability, and ways to inspire that lead to complete development.

At times, speaking with coworkers, your staff, your boss, and, yes, your customers can be difficult. They may come to you with stories about their problems or your mistakes. They might even mistreat you. We need to remember that there are always two sides to every story. Learn how to diffuse difficult situations and become the difficult person’s advocate rather than the enemy.

When relationships are strong, you can communicate anything. When they are not strong, even the simplest feedback becomes difficult. This module provides an understanding of why and how strong relationships are created using our original research, which has unveiled the two most essential characteristics for building a solid working relationship. This module utilizes practice to strengthen the techniques and skills that foster trusting relationships.

Listening is not just about hearing—it involves the understanding and evaluation of what is heard. Whether you’re in a face-to-face meeting or talking on the phone, leaders and managers must exhibit comfort and proficiency in six specific areas of listening, or messages can be misunderstood. These qualities and techniques are the focus of this module. In addition, this module covers the top ten barriers to listening and how to overcome them. This is one of our most popular topics.

Have you ever felt that your listeners were confused? Have listeners ever asked you to get to the point? Truly connecting with your listeners is fundamental to all communication and critical for a successful presentation. This module teaches you how to make your point and engage all of your listeners. It does not provide a one-size-fits-all methodology but instead covers a whole range of skills from which you may choose the best approach for specific groups.

Business speaking requires a mixture of information and persuasion. Both are critical, and you use both in different situations and for various reasons. The distinction between these two types of speaking is that informative speaking lists data and impartially clarifies and enlightens with no particular goal other than making information clear. Persuasive speaking urges a partisan decision, favors a position, and tries to garner acceptance for that position. In many presentations, the speaker will use both information and persuasion in order to convince the listeners.

This training will help you understand the difference between informative and persuasive presentation. It teaches how to implement these concepts in your content and delivery and the three ways of persuasion that are used in virtually all presentations we see today. You’ll learn how to choose the proper mode of persuasion and how to match your message to your listeners.

Do your listeners ask you to repeat keywords? The ability to speak clearly is an important skill, no matter who you are. There are several ways to lose your listeners, but poor articulation, mumbling, and lack of volume are the most preventable. Don’t force listeners to work harder to understand the words coming out of your mouth! This module on communication excellence will teach key sounds and practice techniques to ensure that you are speaking clearly.

Your customers will often pay attention to how you sound as much as what you are saying. A positive interaction can depend on your tone and inflection, speed, and projection.

Plus, words matter! Your choice of words, such as “customers,” “clients,” “guests,” or “patrons,” will shape their perception, and perception shapes service communication. Don’t let your choice of words become a distraction during a customer interaction. This teaches participants the various sounds of service and how to master their sounds to best communicate with customers.

Presentation Skills Coaching-Do You Need a Presentation Skills Coach?

Do I need to get a presentation skills coach? Well, unfortunately, the answer is probably… It depends. A public speaking coach can be very helpful in certain situations. However, in many cases, a public speaking coach can also be a complete waste of time and money . (The process may actually make you more nervous as well.)

In this post, I’m going to cover the pros and cons of public speaking coaching. I give you a few circumstances where hiring a good public speaking coach can be very helpful. We will also cover the situations where a presentation coach can be detrimental. Next, I’ll give you a few ways to find a high-quality speech coach. Then finally, I will share with you a list of skills where presentation and executive coaching are most helpful.

The pros and cons of public speaking coaching., don’t hire a one-on-one presentation skills coach if any of these things are true., situations where a presentation skills coach can be a great investment..

You have a lot of options for different types of presentation training. The most common way to acquire practical tips is by reading posts or books and/or watching videos online. This option is very cost-effective. (In most cases, it is free.) The downside of this type of training is that you won’t get feedback or coaching. So, quite often, this type of training can take a long time. You can also develop bad habits that may be more difficult to correct later.

However, if you hire a good public speaking coach, feedback is built into the process. For instance, a coach can help you design a sample presentation. Then, you can practice delivering that presentation in front of the coach. Your coach will give you feedback so you can improve your delivery. So, when you hire a public speaking coach, you can speed up your learning process quite a bit. Your presentation coach may have years of experience mastering the skill that you want to improve in. This shortens your learning curve.

One-on-One Presentation Skills Coaching is perfect to fine-tune your presentation. However, if you are a nervous speaker or if you have very little experience speaking, coaching may not be a good fit.

Let’s explore why people who are nervous may want to choose a different option. Public speaking fear occurs when a person attempts to speak in front of a group and has more perceived failures than successes. (Make sure to see Where Public Speaking Fear Comes From for more details.) Obviously, this is a very simple way to explain how people get stage fright, but it is pretty accurate. To reduce this nervousness, you have to replace the memories of negative experiences with memories of positive experiences.

The big problem when you do a one-on-one coaching session is that you don’t gain experience speaking in front of a group. So, the first time you stand up to speak after coaching sessions, that nervousness will still be there.

If you are a new presenter, you will experience a similar challenge. The only difference is that, since you don’t have the negative experiences to overcome, if you have a huge success right away, your confidence will soar. So, new speakers who do one-on-one presentation coaching tend to do better than presenters who are nervous.

(Again, that is why presentation classes work better. You get both the coaching and the presentation experience.)

With all that being said, once you want to get your presentations to the next level, a good presentation coach can help you in these types of situations.

If You Have a Big Presentation or Executive Presentation With a Lot on the Line.

If you have a big boardroom speech coming up, a presentation coach can help you design key messages for these board members. Client presentations or board meetings are unique speeches. You can feel a lot of pressure when you deliver powerful presentations like these. You have a lot on the line. Professional speakers have more experience delivering these types of speeches. So, a professional coach can help you design and practice a more powerful speech.

For instance, I had an engineering team hire me to help them design a presentation to win a $3 million contract. I don’t care how confident you are, if $3 million is on the line, you want every advantage you can get. So, hiring a professional coach is a good investment.

You Are a Fairly Confident Speaker, But You Want to Fine Tune your Delivery.

Once you get experience as a powerful speaker and want to fine-tune your delivery, a coach can be a great investment. I had a client in Houston who went through my presentation skills class to reduce nervousness. Then, later, she received two promotions in less than two years. Her newest role included giving client presentations and to train new team members. So, she hired me to come in a few hours each week to help her practice more high-level presentation skills.

She wanted to make her training sessions more interactive. In addition, she also wanted to create an environment of inclusion for these new team members. Each of these things would have been challenging to do if she hadn’t already been speaking confidently for a few years. However, because she was already a confident speaker, the fin-tuning was much easier.

You Have a Team of Presenters Who Want to Improve Communication Skills.

Another great situation where coaching is a great value is when you have a team of speakers. For instance, I mentioned earlier that presentation classes are the best way to overcome nervousness. Classes are also more cost-effective because you are able to split the fee for the professional speaker’s time among all the participants. Well, if you have a team of presenters, you get all the benefits of personal presentation coaching but the fee is way more cost-effective.

One more thing… If you happen to be designing a group presentation — a professional presentation where multiple speakers will present together, then a coaching session may be the only solution. Getting an independent third party who is also an expert at speaking to help can give you a tremendous edge!

Do you know a college student with an intellectual disability who dreams of improving their public speaking skills? We have an exciting opportunity tailored just for them! For the second summer, Think College Network and Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) are offering the Presentation Skills Coaching Model. It's a nine-week online  training designed to empower students to become confident and effective speakers. 

About the Presentation Skills Coaching Model  

Our coaching program is aimed at college students with intellectual disability who aspire to enhance their public speaking abilities. Led by experienced instructors, Mariela Adams and Nichole Hastings from WIHD, alongside guest speakers from the disability advocacy community, this course offers a supportive environment for students to develop their communication skills and amplify their voices on important issues. 

Why Recommend This Program?  

If you know a student with an intellectual disability who is interested in public speaking and could benefit from improved communication skills and increased confidence in public speaking, this program is the perfect opportunity for them.  

By participating in the Presentation Skills Coaching Model, students will: 

• Enhance Communication Skills: Through interactive sessions and personalized coaching, students will learn essential public speaking techniques and gain confidence in expressing themselves effectively. 
• Build Confidence: The supportive environment of the program encourages students to step out of their comfort zones, receive constructive feedback, and grow in their abilities.

The Presentation Skills Coaching Model will take place on Wednesdays from 1-2pm ET throughout the summer, running from May 15 to July 17, 2024. Sessions will be held on an online learning space called on Canvas. Students must have a professional mentor to support their participation this summer.
