How to Write the Perfect Essay

06 Feb, 2024 | Blog Articles , English Language Articles , Get the Edge , Humanities Articles , Writing Articles

You can keep adding to this plan, crossing bits out and linking the different bubbles when you spot connections between them. Even though you won’t have time to make a detailed plan under exam conditions, it can be helpful to draft a brief one, including a few key words, so that you don’t panic and go off topic when writing your essay.

If you don’t like the mind map format, there are plenty of others to choose from: you could make a table, a flowchart, or simply a list of bullet points.

Discover More

Thanks for signing up, step 2: have a clear structure.

Think about this while you’re planning: your essay is like an argument or a speech. It needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question.

Start with the basics! It’s best to choose a few major points which will become your main paragraphs. Three main paragraphs is a good number for an exam essay, since you’ll be under time pressure.

If you agree with the question overall, it can be helpful to organise your points in the following pattern:

  • YES (agreement with the question)
  • AND (another YES point)
  • BUT (disagreement or complication)

If you disagree with the question overall, try:

  • AND (another BUT point)

For example, you could structure the Of Mice and Men sample question, “To what extent is Curley’s wife portrayed as a victim in Of Mice and Men ?”, as follows:

  • YES (descriptions of her appearance)
  • AND (other people’s attitudes towards her)
  • BUT (her position as the only woman on the ranch gives her power as she uses her femininity to her advantage)

If you wanted to write a longer essay, you could include additional paragraphs under the YES/AND categories, perhaps discussing the ways in which Curley’s wife reveals her vulnerability and insecurities, and shares her dreams with the other characters. Alternatively, you could also lengthen your essay by including another BUT paragraph about her cruel and manipulative streak.

Of course, this is not necessarily the only right way to answer this essay question – as long as you back up your points with evidence from the text, you can take any standpoint that makes sense.

Step 3: Back up your points with well-analysed quotations

You wouldn’t write a scientific report without including evidence to support your findings, so why should it be any different with an essay? Even though you aren’t strictly required to substantiate every single point you make with a quotation, there’s no harm in trying.

A close reading of your quotations can enrich your appreciation of the question and will be sure to impress examiners. When selecting the best quotations to use in your essay, keep an eye out for specific literary techniques. For example, you could highlight Curley’s wife’s use of a rhetorical question when she says, a”n’ what am I doin’? Standin’ here talking to a bunch of bindle stiffs.” This might look like:

The rhetorical question “an’ what am I doin’?” signifies that Curley’s wife is very insecure; she seems to be questioning her own life choices. Moreover, she does not expect anyone to respond to her question, highlighting her loneliness and isolation on the ranch.

Other literary techniques to look out for include:

  • Tricolon – a group of three words or phrases placed close together for emphasis
  • Tautology – using different words that mean the same thing: e.g. “frightening” and “terrifying”
  • Parallelism – ABAB structure, often signifying movement from one concept to another
  • Chiasmus – ABBA structure, drawing attention to a phrase
  • Polysyndeton – many conjunctions in a sentence
  • Asyndeton – lack of conjunctions, which can speed up the pace of a sentence
  • Polyptoton – using the same word in different forms for emphasis: e.g. “done” and “doing”
  • Alliteration – repetition of the same sound, including assonance (similar vowel sounds), plosive alliteration (“b”, “d” and “p” sounds) and sibilance (“s” sounds)
  • Anaphora – repetition of words, often used to emphasise a particular point

Don’t worry if you can’t locate all of these literary devices in the work you’re analysing. You can also discuss more obvious techniques, like metaphor, simile and onomatopoeia. It’s not a problem if you can’t remember all the long names; it’s far more important to be able to confidently explain the effects of each technique and highlight its relevance to the question.

Person reading a book outside

Step 4: Be creative and original throughout

Anyone can write an essay using the tips above, but the thing that really makes it “perfect” is your own unique take on the topic. If you’ve noticed something intriguing or unusual in your reading, point it out – if you find it interesting, chances are the examiner will too!

Creative writing and essay writing are more closely linked than you might imagine. Keep the idea that you’re writing a speech or argument in mind, and you’re guaranteed to grab your reader’s attention.

It’s important to set out your line of argument in your introduction, introducing your main points and the general direction your essay will take, but don’t forget to keep something back for the conclusion, too. Yes, you need to summarise your main points, but if you’re just repeating the things you said in your introduction, the body of the essay is rendered pointless.

Think of your conclusion as the climax of your speech, the bit everything else has been leading up to, rather than the boring plenary at the end of the interesting stuff.

To return to Of Mice and Men once more, here’s an example of the ideal difference between an introduction and a conclusion:

Introduction

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men , Curley’s wife is portrayed as an ambiguous character. She could be viewed either as a cruel, seductive temptress or a lonely woman who is a victim of her society’s attitudes. Though she does seem to wield a form of sexual power, it is clear that Curley’s wife is largely a victim. This interpretation is supported by Steinbeck’s description of her appearance, other people’s attitudes, her dreams, and her evident loneliness and insecurity.
Overall, it is clear that Curley’s wife is a victim and is portrayed as such throughout the novel in the descriptions of her appearance, her dreams, other people’s judgemental attitudes, and her loneliness and insecurities. However, a character who was a victim and nothing else would be one-dimensional and Curley’s wife is not. Although she suffers in many ways, she is shown to assert herself through the manipulation of her femininity – a small rebellion against the victimisation she experiences.

Both refer back consistently to the question and summarise the essay’s main points. However, the conclusion adds something new which has been established in the main body of the essay and complicates the simple summary which is found in the introduction.

Practice Makes a Man Perfect: Proverb Meaning and Expansion of idea

The Proverb – ‘Practice Makes a Man Perfect’ professes that when you practice something then you will gain mastery over it. By practice, it means that doing the thing repeatedly for several times. It could be anything like, studying, playing, or anything else. If you keep on repeating the act then you will gain excellence in that particular act or field.

Let’s take the example of a student who has to write an exam after a couple of months. He is particularly weak in math and wants to fare well in the exam. If he practices math regularly, that he will become good in the subject and score well. This is what the proverb wants to convey.

Expansion of idea

The proverb ‘practice makes a man perfect’ indicates that a man can achieve perfection on something if he practices it regularly. The proverb applies to every sphere and is not limited to any specific criterion.

Practice here means an act of repeatedly doing whatever you seek to achieve. It has different meanings for different persons. For students, practice means studying again and again; for a sportsperson, it means practicing the particular sports every day; for a teacher, it means to teach the students, etc. All of these people become perfect in their respective fields only by regularly practicing whatever they do.

That is what being perfect here implies. If you practice a particular thing over and over again, you will get perfect in that particular thing.

There was a boy, living in a village in India. Though he was a hard-working student, he was poor in math. However attentively he listens to the teacher he just couldn’t understand the subject. Everyone, including the teachers, could not improve him, despite their genuine intentions. However, his grandfather, who had also been a teacher in older days, had a plan. The old man was confident that he would be able to make the boy do well, even in the subject that he fears the most – Math.

The old man asked the boy for just one hour every day, not a minute more, not a minute less. In that one hour, the grandfather taught the boy math. But they were much disciplined in following their routine. Come what may, there never missed their session, and continued the same way for months.

Then the exams came. The boy was confused about what to revise as every chapter seems so well versed, thanks to his regular practices. Everyone was surprised when the boy scored the highest marks in math, not only in class but also in the school. When asked about the secret of his success, the boy told that he credits his success to his grandfather. Once, in Japan there lived a young girl who had always aspired to become a singer. Singing was her passion and that is what she ever wanted to do. She got an instructor who was a much-disciplined guy. He asked the girl to practice on a particular song over and over again, for months, every day. The girl got so frustrated that she ran away and thought of giving up on singing. It so happened that by chance she was eating in a hotel, where a singing competition was going on.

The host asked anyone from the public to sing a song of their choice. The girl agreed and sang the one song she had perfected for months. Her performance was so outstanding that the judge felicitated her and asked who his instructor was? Then the girl realized that his instructor had been a true mentor by making her regularly practicing the same thing to achieve perfection. “Sir Dom Bradman, the highly acknowledged batsman of all times, used to practice for hours every day, during his childhood. He practiced so hard that he had scored his first century at the age of 12.”

The origin of the phrase ‘practice makes a man perfect’ could be traced back to the 1550s. There was a Latin phrase popularly in use – Uses Promtos Facit’ which translates to ‘Use makes perfect’ in English.

Though, it is exactly the same as the phrase but conveys that using something over and over again makes it perfect. Also, the person using that particular thing will get well used to it.

The exact proverb – ‘Practice makes a man perfect’ had appeared in the diary and autobiography of John Adams, an American Statesman, and writer.

The proverb ‘practice makes a man perfect’ is an important proverb in a way that it teaches one of the greatest lessons of life. It fits in for every person who is pursuing his/her dream in any field. The message is simple – if you want to excel in your specific field then you must practice whatever you are doing.

It is only through practice that one will reach perfection and be successful. The phrase is as important for the students as it is for working professionals and businessmen.

Practice, in the broad sense, is an activity that is repeated regularly. We repeat many actions consciously, like swimming, cooking, walking, and more to master them. We are practising all the time, whether we are aware or not. Our brains are constantly absorbing and learning. Sub-consciously we are getting better by performing the same task over and over again. That is where the importance of practice is reinforced. By practising, we get involved in mastering a skill and grow in our profession, studies, or career. There is an element of improvement which inches us to success in every step. Practice is what makes one better.

Children need to learn the importance of learning correctly, and perfection in learning comes with practice. It will enhance their knowledge and skill in different areas. Authorities in influential positions can demonstrate hard work and practising habits and can inspire the youth to do the same. A skilled, knowledgeable, and confident youth will be able to benefit the growth of the country in multiple ways. Practice permeates every aspect of life, from punctuality to cleanliness; each element impacts nation-building. It is more like a ripple effect.

Why Practice is Necessary – Essay 4 (600 words)

Along with humans, other living beings also have to work hard to get their livelihood. One has to set goals for oneself and then practice accordingly for a successful life. In order to practice certain activities, man needs to concentrate his mind, soul, and body in one place to achieve certain essential achievements with greater ease and satisfaction.

from practice to success

Without determination, one cannot engage in practice with success. Hopeless people never practice, because they easily give up before they get enough results. To keep the practice regular, a person needs hope, faith and confidence along with positive thinking. If we look at the history, we see that Eklavya was refused to teach archery by Guru Dronacharya. However, his determination helped him and he was able to perform some years of regular practice in front of his Guru’s idol. Archery was learned very well.

Why is practice necessary?

Practice is like exercise and mantra for us, bringing the physical and mental entities on a path with the required frequency and slowly but with certainty leads us towards perfection. Regular practice with faith builds a cohesive force, which links the physical and mental entities to each other to function with the required frequency. If practiced in a planned manner, one can achieve one’s goal slowly but surely.

Ambitious people work hard to fulfill their ambition, but never think of giving up. Practice is such a tool, which we can use to improve ourselves and along with this we can also hone our talents and abilities. Practice is our best friend, which leads us to success and always keeps knowledge with us.

practice a boon

“Practice makes perfect” is certainly a common phrase. It simply refers to how we are able to acquire skills that we do not have. The practice has been given by God not only as an individual but as a collective boon. Human beings start doing from student life itself. When a student fails in the exam once, then by practicing again and again, he/she wins the examination. When it comes to practice, a formula always comes to the fore in everyone’s mouth that-

“Suzanne would be the result of the practice of doing chores.

The mark falling on the tail of the Rasari Awat Jaat.

Practice works to increase the level of confidence in us. It calms our mind and gives happiness, because the practice of any object is like meditation. We can achieve anything and reach inaccessible heights through practice. It prepares us to go in the right direction and give us the ability to win by facing challenges. Practice is a regular activity, which also works to increase the will power.

Short Essay on Importance of Teamwork [100, 200, 400 Words] With PDF

In this session, you will learn to write short essays on the Importance of Teamwork. Here I will write three sets of short essays on the importance of teamwork covering different word limits.

Table of Contents

Short essay on importance of teamwork in 100 words, short essay on importance of teamwork in 200 words, short essay on importance of teamwork in 400 words.

Feature image of Short Essay on Importance of teamwork

Teamwork is when a team or a group of people work together towards a common goal. Teamwork makes a task simpler and easier. Teamwork is needed among students working on an assignment together, players playing for a particular sports team as well as employees of any organisation working together to fulfil a task.

When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important. When people listen to each other’s opinions, help each other and put their common goal before personal gain, they have great teamwork. Teamwork helps us achieve goals that can not be achieved alone.

Teamwork is the combined action taken by a group of people to achieve a common goal. We cannot always work alone. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action.

In school, students work as a team to finish group projects. In sports, members of a team must work together if they want to win. In corporations, if every employee is only focused on his personal goals, the corporation wouldn’t be able to function. When a group of people work together, if everyone wants to do the task his way rather than listening to each other and choosing the best way, the task will never be finished. That is why teamwork is important.

When people work as a team, they communicate with each other. They are free to express their views and opinions and others listen to them. Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they so diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well or else the entire team will stop functioning well.

When a team has a good leader who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team, teamwork becomes much easier. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us achieve big goals which cannot be achieved individually.

Not all tasks can be done by a single person. Sometimes, to fulfil a larger goal, many people need to come together and take combined action. In school, students need to work together with their classmates to finish a group project. In sports, be it cricket, football or hockey, all the members of a certain team must work together and support each other in order to win a match.

No organisation can function without teamwork. If every employee is only focused on his personal goals and gains, the corporation wouldn’t be able to finish any of its projects. At home, if family members don’t understand and help each other, it will cause unnecessary issues and create tension.

We can see examples of teamwork even in the wild. Many animals display teamwork by hunting together as a group. While some members of the group distract the prey, others surround it, jump on it and kill it. Many wild animals also stay together to protect themselves and each other from danger as well as to raise their young.

When we look at large organisations, all the work there is divided and given to different departments. Even in those departments, hundreds of people do different work which is assigned to them by the head. Only when everyone is doing their work well, a department can finish the work assigned to them and in turn, the organisation can flourish. If any one department stops functioning, all other departments have to stop and wait as well.

It is not quite easy to keep working hard, matching the pace of everyone else. One can often get demotivated and slow down. That is why a good leader is very important in every team. A good leader is one who is capable of encouraging, motivating, guiding and helping others in the team. He makes working as a team easier.

It is very important for children to learn teamwork as it will help them throughout their lives. Teamwork also teaches about discipline and responsibility. When people work as a team, they communicate with each other about their problems. They are allowed to freely express their views and opinions and the other members listen to them.

Everyone has a duty assigned to them which they do very diligently. It is their responsibility to make sure they are doing their part well so that the team can keep functioning smoothly. With good teamwork, a huge task may be finished in no time. Teamwork helps us grow in every field of life and is the key to our success.

In this lesson, I have adopted a simplistic approach for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If anyone has any doubts regarding this topic, they can post them in the comment section below. I will try my level best to clarify those doubts.
