Sometimes the scholarship grant that has been provided or approved can be cancelled by the official authority in some cases. If an applicant is unable to perform well or in case fails in a subject of MPhil or PhD the award can be cancelled. Another case is if an applicant is found ineligible later. What is the “Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research”?

Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research scheme is a prestigious initiative of Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India towards the advancement of university research engagements in line with industry requirement. The scheme encourages full time PhD scholars to pursue research in “focus areas” identified by industries as well as of national priorities.

What is the aim of this scheme?

The aim of the scheme is to encourage and inspire promising young Indian Ph.D. researchers to pursue industry relevant research in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture & Medicine, build industry academia partnership for advancing R&D and boost research on industrially relevant subject areas.

What are the Key Features of the Fellowship?

In addition to attractive scholarship, the Prime Minister’s Fellowship emphasizes providing a unique and invigorating experience to selected fellows. It ensures the best national and international exposure for them and provides mentoring through industry and academic experts through the mechanism of annual review meetings. In addition, periodic mentorship sessions are also organized with the help of expert external agencies.

Which is the implementing agency of this scheme?

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) on behalf of SERB implement the scheme.

What are the eligibility criteria for applying/availing the Fellowship?

The applicant should be a full-time PhD scholar in any recognized Indian university/institute/research laboratory. The scholar’s PhD registration date should not be more than 14 months from the date of submission of application. The applicant should have a valid industry partner who should be ready to support the research project financially as well as provide guidance and mentorship. The mutually agreed topic of research, between the applicant and the supporting company, should be innovative, have practical relevance, and have industrial application. The selected applicant should be willing to work with/in the supporting company as and when required during the project period. The applicant should not draw any other fellowship after the selection.

What are the areas covered under this Fellowship?

Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine

What is the nature of support for the Fellow?

Under this scheme, fulltime PhD scholars get double the JRF/SRF fellowship amount, as scholarship.

What are the Selection Parameters of the projects under the scheme?

The projects should be innovative and of high scientific merit; with discrete R&D as opposed to exploratory investigation. The proposed research project should have a high commercialization potential. The applicant, the academic guide, and the industry mentor should have a strong track record.

How can an applicant apply for this fellowship?

The applicant can apply for this fellowship through the website www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in.

How does the online application work?

Candidates need to refer to Annexure I in the Call for Proposal document which is available on the home page of the portal www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in. All the required documents and details needed to be given should be collected before filling the online application.

What is the timeline till which the application can be submitted? Will an additional hard copy, stamped / signed of the application required to be sent to CII?

The scheme is open-ended and the scholars can apply anytime during the year subject to the condition that the doctoral fellow should be admitted to a full-time PhD in the last 14 months from the date of submission of application in any recognized Indian university/institute/research laboratory. In case of a different admission/enrollment and registration date, the first date of admission in full-time PhD will be considered. In case of any dispute regarding the submission date, the decision of the Apex Council will be considered as final. No hard copies of any kind need to be sent to CII; only soft copies are required to be uploaded as indicated in the form.

Can I apply if I do not have an industry partner? Will CII help in finding one?

Applications without industry partners will not be accepted by the online system. Candidates have to find industry partners on their own. CII facilitates match-making between research scholars and industry through the portal www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in. All those who want to search for industry partners are requested to register themselves on this portal. Registration on this portal, however, will not guarantee that the candidate will find an industry partner. The relevance of their project for industry and the extent to which the candidate is able to convey their capability to the industry will determine whether they will find industry partners or not. The interested companies can evaluate the profile and contact the applicants if they find the proposal relevant.

How can I find relevant industry partners?

Candidates should talk to their research guides at the institute and find out about the relevant companies in that field. They can do their own research in and around them to find out the right companies and approach them. Candidates should also keep themselves abreast with the latest technologies, trends and companies working in their field. They should try to interact with industry people in their field as frequently as possible to trigger idea thrashing about a particular project.

If an applicant submits the form, can it be submitted again?

Candidates can review and re-review their forms any number of times before uploading them finally. Once uploaded, however, the form cannot be submitted again.

If I apply this year and am not able to get the scholarship this time, will I be allowed to apply next year?

Yes, you can apply as a fresh candidate with updated information, provided you satisfy all the eligibility conditions.

Will applicants get automated response to submission? Will somebody call from CII to confirm the receipt of application?

Applicants will get an automatic response at the submission of applications. They will not receive any calls from CII. In case you do not receive a system generated email regarding the submission of their application within 24 hours, the applicant must contact CII at [email protected]

Scholarship for Phd students in India – Scholarships for PhD applicants

PhD scholarships – A PhD is fairly considered the highest academic achievement in a field and owing to their high level of expertise in their chosen field, holders of a PhD degree earn the right to be referred to as a Doctor. Unless you wish your symptoms to be diagnosed as emblematic of the deeply problematic ontological hegemony of the west, however, they are not the kind of doctors you would run to in a case of a medical emergency. All jokes aside, though, only the most dedicated scholars ever reach that pinnacle of academic accomplishment – a doctorate.

Obtaining a PhD requires many years of dedication and hard work, and not to forget, years of college tuition. Without adequate financial support, it would be tough for academics to pursue a PhD. Thankfully, there are many scholarships for PhD available for students and applicants in India.

To help you get started, here is a list of some of the top scholarships for PhD applicants:

Global universities grant scholarships based on the student’s gender, skin tone, religion, family background, etc. Some institutions also consider the student's family medical history.

Discipline/Course-based

Some students who score exceptionally in a particular subject and wish to pursue a discipline course are eligible for this scholarship from a prominent university. For example, if a student has scored distinction in Business economics and wants to pursue an MBA, he can get a scholarship under this category from an institution like the London School of Business.

Country-specific

Sometimes, the Union/State government, through the universities, awards scholarships to deserving students from a particular nation as part of bilateral ties. For example, the Fulbright-Nehru scholarship is for students who wish to study in the USA. This can be explained in detail further.

Humanitarian Programmes

These scholarships are given to deserving students who are exceptionally well in their studies but are financially weak. They require the family income details and submission of documents like ITRs, employment certificates, etc.

Sports Quota

Some scholarships are awarded based on sports quota. Such scholarships are available only to athletic achievers. Those representing their university or institution at national or international sports events or tournaments while managing their studies are eligible for these programs.

Top 5 Scholarships for studying abroad by the Indian Government

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship

This scholarship program is part of the US-India bilateral Fulbright-Nehru Binational Program. Under this program, the Indian government grants fellowships to US and Indian scholars, professionals, and students. Now, GIAN also includes educational programs for other countries.

Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

Secure Your Study Trip with a Smart Travel Insurance

While the Indian government will bear the expenses of studying abroad, including tuition and examination fees, you need only plan your living expenses, which include accommodation and food.

There is one more crucial aspect you must not overlook, i.e., covering medical emergencies' expenses if they arise. The only way to do so is to get an appropriate travel insurance policy, such as the Care Student Explore plan by Care Health Insurance. Such an insurance policy can cover all your medical emergencies or any other financial burden, such as loss of baggage and travel documents. You must also know that certain international universities have a mandatory requirement for student travel insurance , given the medical and non-medical risks a student may face during his/her stay in a foreign country.

Hence, if you plan to pursue higher education at a prominent university abroad, you must carefully select student travel insurance, among other mandatory documents.

Disclaimer:   All plan features, benefits, coverage, and claims underwriting are subject to policy terms and conditions. Kindly refer to the brochure, sales prospectus, and policy documents carefully.

LSE graduate student wins prestigious Stanford scholarship

The ability to learn how to make an impact through our legal and political institutions from the best in the world is unparalleled.

David Millman 747 x 560

LSE graduate student David Millman has been selected for the prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship program at Stanford University to pursue a JD in Law. Millman is one of just 90 students chosen from over 8000 applicants.

Currently pursuing a Master of Science in Local Economic Development at LSE, Millman aims to use his law degree to address the American housing crisis through a career in public interest law.

“The ability to learn how to make an impact through our legal and political institutions from the best in the world is unparalleled,” Millman said. “As someone who has worked as a student body president, a zoning district author, and as a sexual violence prevention advocate, each step of my advocacy has centered around leveraging our institutions to affect positive change. Having a legal education will empower me to make a greater impact.”

The Knight-Hennessy Scholarship provides postgraduate fellowships across all seven of Stanford’s graduate schools, covering up to three years of tuition and stipends for living, academic, and travel expenses.

As part of the fellowship, Millman will benefit from leadership development programming, including mentorship, networking opportunities, workshops, and projects designed to prepare scholars for leadership positions across various sectors and to tackle complex global challenges.

Knight-Hennessy scholars are assessed based on three criteria: independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and civic mindset. During his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, Millman served in student government and engaged in civic activism, writing legislation and campaigning for housing reform. At LSE, he has begun a dissertation on the economic barriers faced by those experiencing homelessness in Central London and presented his work to Parliament after winning the Phelan US Centre’s essay competition .

“From world-class academics in the classroom to Nobel Prize winning guest speakers, LSE has uniquely allowed me to be surrounded by ways to improve my own understanding of economic and political issues,” Millman said. “As someone looking to make a positive impact on the world, LSE allowed me to focus on academics that had the central purpose of bettering society.”

MIT senior Owen Dugan, graduate student Vittorio Colicci ’22, predoctoral research fellow Carine You ’22, and recent alumna Carina Letong Hong ’22 are recipients of this year’s Knight-Hennessy Scholarships. The competitive fellowship, now in its seventh year, funds up to three years of graduate studies in any field at Stanford University. To date, 22 MIT students and alumni have been awarded Knight-Hennessy Scholarships.

“We are excited for these students to continue their education at Stanford with the generous support of the Knight Hennessy Scholarship,” says Kim Benard, associate dean of distinguished fellowships in Career Advising and Professional Development. “They have all demonstrated extraordinary dedication, intellect, and leadership, and this opportunity will allow them to further hone their skills to make real-world change.”

Vittorio Colicci ’22

Vittorio Colicci, from Trumbull, Connecticut, graduated from MIT in May 2022 with a BS in aerospace engineering and physics. He will receive his master’s degree in planetary sciences this spring. At Stanford, Colicci will pursue a PhD in earth and planetary sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He hopes to investigate how surface processes on Earth and Mars have evolved through time alongside changes in habitability. Colicci has worked largely on spacecraft engineering projects, developing a monodisperse silica ceramic for electrospray thrusters and fabricating high-energy diffraction gratings for space telescopes. As a Presidential Graduate Fellow at MIT, he examined the influence of root geometry on soil cohesion for early terrestrial plants using 3D-printed reconstructions. Outside of research, Colicci served as co-director of TEDxMIT and propulsion lead for the MIT Rocket Team. He is also passionate about STEM engagement and outreach, having taught educational workshops in Zambia and India.

Owen Dugan, from Sleepy Hollow, New York, is a senior majoring in physics. As a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, he will pursue a PhD in computer science at the Stanford School of Engineering. Dugan aspires to combine artificial intelligence and physics, developing AI that enables breakthroughs in physics and using physics techniques to design more capable and safe AI systems. He has collaborated with researchers from Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and DeepMind, and has presented his first-author research at venues including the International Conference on Machine Learning, the MIT Mechanistic Interpretability Conference, and the American Physical Society March Meeting. Among other awards, Dugan is a Hertz Finalist, a U.S. Presidential Scholar, an MIT Outstanding Undergraduate Research Awardee, a Research Science Institute Scholar, and a Neo Scholar. He is also a co-founder of VeriLens, a funded startup enabling trust on the internet by cryptographically verifying digital media.

Carina Letong Hong ’22

Carina Letong Hong, from Canton, China, is currently pursuing a JD/PhD in mathematics at Stanford. A first-generation college student, Hong graduated from MIT in May 2022 with a double major in mathematics and physics and was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society. She then earned a neuroscience master’s degree with dissertation distinctions from the University of Oxford, where she conducted artificial intelligence and machine learning research at Sainsbury Wellcome Center’s Gatsby Unit. At Stanford Law School, Hong provides legal aid to low-income workers and uses economic analysis to push for law enforcement reform. She has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, served as an expert referee for journals and conferences, and spoken at summits in the United States, Germany, France, the U.K., and China. She was the recipient of the AMS-MAA-SIAM Morgan Prize for Outstanding Research, the highest honor for an undergraduate in mathematics in North America; the AWM Alice T. Schafer Prize for Mathematical Excellence, given annually to an undergraduate woman in the United States; the Maryam Mirzakhani Fellowship; and a Rhodes Scholarship.

Carine You ’22

Carine You, from San Diego, California, graduated from MIT in May 2022 with bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science and in mathematics. Since graduating, You has worked as a predoctoral research assistant with Professor Amy Finkelstein in the MIT Department of Economics, where she has studied the quality of Medicare nursing home care and the targeting of medical screening technologies. This fall, You will embark on a PhD in economic analysis and policy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She wishes to address pressing issues in environmental and health-care markets, with a particular focus on economic efficiency and equity. You previously developed audio signal processing algorithms at Bose, refined mechanistic models to inform respiratory monitoring at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, and analyzed corruption in developmental projects in India at the World Bank. Through Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow, she taught computer science to Israeli and Palestinian students in Jerusalem and spearheaded an online pilot expansion for the organization. At MIT, she was named a Burchard Scholar.

  • Rishi Sunak is set to announce a crackdown on education recruitment agents
  • He is seeking ways to reduce the number of international students coming to the UK
  • Migration has become a big issue ahead of UK's general election in January 2025

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to announce a crackdown on recruitment agents providing misleading information to prospective international students in certain markets. He is also considering modifying the Graduate Route visa scheme, popular among Indians, to restrict visas to only the “best and the brightest".

Sunak's move, which targets agents marketing graduate visa schemes overseas, including in India, aims to show a tougher stance on immigration, which is a key issue in the UK's January 2025 general election .

With this crackdown on educational recruiters, Sunak is seeking ways to reduce the number of international students coming to study in the UK.

The new measures, which could be revealed as early as next week, coincide with quarterly migration data releases from the Home Office and the Office for National Statistics, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The plan to modify the Graduate Route visa scheme has not yet been formally discussed by ministers, according to the report.

A report issued by the British government reveals that a post-study visa programme, popularly known as the Graduate Route visa and is dominated by Indian graduates, is helping UK universities recover from financial losses and expand research opportunities.

UK GOVERNMENT CONCERNS OVER RECRUITMENT AGENTS

The Graduate route: rapid review report from the British government states that the government found no evidence of any abuse of the Graduate route.

"We found no evidence of any significant abuse of the Graduate route. By abuse we mean deliberate non-compliance with immigration rules. However, we do have concerns over the use of recruitment agents by universities in certain markets in providing misleading information to prospective international students," the report stated.

The UK government was reviewing the Graduate Route visa and that caused consternation among the international student community. In fact, applications to UK universities were dropped because of the visa programme uncertainty.

According to the report, the top five nationalities account for nearly 75% of all Graduate Route visas with India accounting for over 40% of them. Indian nationals made up a higher proportion of Graduate Route visas (42%) compared to their proportion of student visas (26%).

In 2023, 114,000 Graduate visas were granted for main applicants with a further 30,000 being granted for dependants. The take-up of these visas is largely concentrated among 4 nationalities. The top 4 nationalities -- India, Nigeria, China and Pakistan -- accounted for 70% of all Graduate visas, with India accounting for over 40%.

In the student visa category, Indian nationals represent the largest group of students granted leave to remain on this route, making up 43% of grants last year.

UK GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSED CRACKDOWN MEASURES

Sunak’s proposed crackdown includes a mandatory agent registration scheme and fines for malpractice.

Additionally, he is considering modifying the graduate visa scheme to restrict visas to only the “best and the brightest".

However, this approach has not yet been formally discussed by ministers, reported the Financial Times.

This move comes as universities face dire financial positions due to declining international student numbers.

The prime minister is under pressure from his party to reduce legal migration, with the ruling Conservative party trailing the opposition Labour Party in the polls.

The potential changes have been met with resistance from key cabinet members, including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan.

They worry that further declines in migrant students will worsen the financial situation in the UK.

Keegan, who supports measures to eliminate system abuse by agents, opposes limiting access to the scheme based on student quality or the degrees they pursue.

“This can’t all be about PPEs from Oxford,” she told colleagues.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) found evidence that agents mis-selling courses. They recommended tighter regulations, including requiring universities to publish data on spending for international recruitment agents and setting up a mandatory registration system.

An ally of Sunak expressed interest in a scheme like the "High Potential Individual" programme, which allows graduates from the top 50 universities worldwide to stay in the UK for two years without employer sponsorship.

Iain Mansfield from Policy Exchange suggested giving graduate visas only to students from "high tariff" universities, which require the highest grades.

Universities and businesses are urging Sunak to rethink his approach, arguing that focusing only on the “best and the brightest” is misguided.
