This is a research doctoral degree, by dissertation only. Students develop their own research topic in conjunction with a supervisor, conduct the research and then write a dissertation of no more than 80 000 words.

This degree does not lead to registration as a Psychologist with the Professional Board for Psychology.

Admission requirements

Faculty Rules FDA1-FDA6, as listed in the Faculty of Humanities Postgraduate Handbook , apply.

Applicants must have completed a master’s degree in the Social Sciences, Humanities or cognate discipline. The degree must have been completed with an overall average result of no less than 70%.

Preference will be given to students who plan to conduct research in areas currently undertaken by academic staff in the department.

Applicants must have the required background and submit an acceptable research proposal for which supervision is available.

Research degrees are encouraged where the field of research is clearly defined, the student wishes to concentrate on a specific research topic and has demonstrated the ability to do so.

The availability and willingness of a supervisor will be a key factor in admitting a student for PhD study. Please look carefully at the list of staff in our department, and their research interests.

Application procedure

The first step in the process is to find a supervisor, and to obtain agreement from the supervisor regarding supervision of the research for the degree. When attempting to find a supervisor in the department, applicants are advised to submit a short (5 – 8 page) research proposal to staff members.

The next step, after securing a supervisor is to write to the PhD Convenor, Professor Floretta Boonzaier  with proof of agreement from a supervisor, the brief research proposal, Full Trancript, MA Degree certificate, letter of motivation, CV and two references letters. This application will be considered by a Departmental Committee.

Applicants must, at the same time also apply to the university for the degree.

The research focus of the Department is aimed at the educational psychological development of human potential and wellness in schools and communities. The ultimate aim is to develop and implement appropriate, inclusive school- and community-based educational psychological and specialised strategies. This will provide opportunities for optimal development and self-actualization.

MAIN AREAS OF RESEARCH​

​​​implementation of inclusive education in different systems.

This area focuses on the development of support strategies within learning environments and communities. An established area is the inclusion of especially learners with disabilities.

Assessment within the inclusive classroom

Within the field of assessment, many facets of educational and psychological assessment are viewed in order to establish a holistic approach to assessment.

Learning support to vulnerable student populations such as youth and adults

This domain focuses on the challenges of the formal and non-formal learning environment that youth centres and adult basic education centres face to serve vulnerable students. Educational support of vulnerable youth and adults with learning, emotional and behavioural challenges are researched.

Wellness in learning and teaching contexts

A critical inquiry is launched into the emotional and physical wellbeing in educational contexts in an ever changing learning society.

Therapeutic and learning support for children and families with learning and developmental challenges

Support is provided both within the classroom context and within the family or community context. Therapeutic and counselling strategies constitute this domain.

Training of educational psychologists and school counselors

Themes include the quality of counselling, trauma management and collaborative consultation in communities as well as teacher learning.​

Registration

An appropriate Master of Education degree with an average of 60%. In addition to this requirement, applicants must submit a transcript or an academic record, as well as a document describing their intended research. Students will be accepted on the following criteria: Suitability and viability of the intended research; adequate supervisory capacity and research expertise in the discipline or department and an approved selection procedure which is in line with Unisa's policies on equality and diversity in the discipline or department. All students with foreign qualifications, including those with qualifications from African countries, must have their qualifications evaluated at SAQA. (www.saqa.org.za)

Time limits for this degree

All master's and doctoral qualifications are structured over a defined period. Refer to sections 4.12 and 4.13 in the Procedures for master’s and doctoral degrees .

A student registered for a research doctoral programme must complete the study programme within six years. A student may make application to the Registrar for one additional year of study who will only consider the application if it is recommended by the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is registered.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree will require you to undertake research at the most advanced academic levels culminating in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis. Coursework may be required as preparation or value addition to the research, but does not contribute to the credit value of the qualification. The defining characteristic of this qualification is that you will be required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of the discipline or field. This work must be of a quality to satisfy peer review and merit publication.

Research outline

Admission Criteria:

A Master’s degree in Psychology or an equivalent qualification which is acceptable according to the regulations of the University.

Application Process:

To apply for the programme, prospective students will need to:

  • In addition, at the time of formal application, or preferably before this, applications must be accompanied by a brief, preliminary research topic of the prospective study with clear objectives and a research question (not more than 1000 words), as well as a CV. These must be sent to [email protected]
  • The department receives many more applications than we can accept, and we encourage enquiries throughout the year. Key to acceptance is the availability of a research supervisor with the expertise and availability to take on the project.

Programme Content

This programme, which requires a minimum of two years of study, focuses on the acquisition and broadening of knowledge in a specific area of psychology at an advanced level. It entails the completion of a dissertation (360 credits), the topic of which is determined in consultation with a supervisor. It is preferable that the study forms part of an existing departmental research project context.

This is a research degree, and there is no professional training. The degree is not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

This course is offered as a full-time or part-time postgraduate degree.

Applicants who would like to register for this degree are expected to undertake a research study on a topic approved by the School of Human and Community Development PhD Committee and the Psychology Department, under the guidance of at least one departmental research supervisor.

Description of what Educational Psychology is and how they are assisting the community:

Educational psychology focuses on learning and development across the life span and in multiple contexts. Like other psychologists, educational psychologists are trained to promote healthy functioning and to evaluate, diagnose, and treat pathologies of behaviour, mental processes, emotions and personality.  Educational psychologists often work with clients with primary or co-morbid presentations that include disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood or adolescence; cognitive disorders; mental disorders due to medical conditions; substance-related disorders; mood disorders; anxiety disorders; sexual and gender identity disorders; eating disorders; sleep disorders; adjustment disorders; and personality disorders. They may also deal with somatoform disorders, fictitious disorders and impulse control disorders. Less often, some educational psychologists work with clients who experience schizophrenia; other psychotic disorders; and delirium, dementia and amnestic disorder.

Different educational psychologists (as is the case with all categories of psychologists) will have developed different areas of interest in their practices. Some areas of activity for educational psychologists, within their specialised focus on learning and development, may include the following:

Board Exam Preparation Workshop 2022

Recognising the importance of being adequately prepared for the board exam of the registration categories as the final phase of training. Three divisions at the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA), the Division of Registered Counsellors and Psychometrists (RCP), Society for Educational Psychology South Africa (SEPSA), and South African Association of Counselling Psychologists (SAACP) are presenting a workshop on board exam preparation. The workshop will cover generally the Mental Health Care Act, the National Health Act more generally as it pertains to the three registration categories. The workshop will then cover category related issues that may appear in the board exam, including ethics, referrals, and cases.
