Available research degrees

Find out what research degree programmes are available at UWE Bristol and what they entail.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A PhD typically takes three to four years of full-time study, or four up to a maximum of seven years of part-time study.

PhD students undertake independent research culminating in the submission of written work (normally in the form of a thesis). Typically, you will have developed your own research proposal or will be applying for a studentship with a pre-approved project aim.

Guiding you throughout your PhD study and successive milestones will be your supervision team led by a Director of Studies.

About your thesis

Word length for the PhD thesis varies according to discipline and is generally about 40,000 words for engineering, creative practice and science subjects, or up to 80,000 for other areas.

The preparation of a PhD thesis is intellectually challenging and, because of the particular demands of scholarship, differs in important respects from consultancy reports or other forms of writing.

The criteria for the PhD award stresses that the student has made an original contribution to knowledge in their field by critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic, and demonstrates an understanding of research methods. Read the regulations about postgraduate qualification descriptors in the  Doctoral Academy Handbook .

After you have submitted your thesis

After you submit, your thesis will be the subject of an oral examination (viva voce) in which you will need to show how you have critically investigated your area of research and made an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

Credits required

You will need to gain 60 taught module credits (included in the tuition fee) in order to complete the requirements of a PhD . This will provide you with an opportunity to develop your subject-specific expertise and professional skills.

There are also researcher development workshops on offer to prepare you for every step of your PhD journey (and your career beyond) which are delivered by the Doctoral Academy and included in the tuition fee.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

An MPhil typically takes two to three years of full-time study, or up to four years of part-time study.

MPhil students undertake independent research culminating in the production of a thesis. Typically, you will have developed your own research proposal or will be applying for a studentship with a pre-approved project aim.

Guiding you throughout your MPhil study and successive milestones will be your supervision team led by a Director of Studies.

Word length for the MPhil thesis varies according to the discipline and is generally about 20,000 words for engineering, creative practice and science subjects, or up to 40,000 for other areas.

UWE Bristol’s criteria for the MPhil award stress that the student must demonstrate that they have systematically investigated and evaluated an approved topic and demonstrated an understanding of research methods. Read the regulations about postgraduate qualification descriptors in the  Doctoral Academy Handbook .

After you submit, your thesis will be the subject of an oral examination (viva voce) in which you will need to show how you have critically investigated your area of research in a way which contributes to knowledge within your field of study.

You will need to gain 60 taught module credits (inclusive in the tuition fee) in order to complete the requirements of an MPhil. This will provide you with an opportunity to develop your subject-specific expertise and professional skills.

There are also researcher development workshops on offer to prepare you for every step of your MPhil journey and your career beyond, which are delivered by the Doctoral Academy and included in the tuition fee.

Doctor of Philosophy by publication (DPhil)

A DPhil typically takes one to three years of part-time study.

A research degree by publication may be granted to students who successfully submit evidence of scholarship through a collection or substantial piece of published work (this may include books, original and exhibited creative work in any medium, peer reviewed publications in the public domain or any other form of scholarly publication). The submitted work will comprise a portfolio of published material and a critical commentary.

Criteria for DPhil applications

Applications for DPhil are only open to those who meet one of the following criteria:

  • The applicant is employed by the University, or employed by an affiliated institution of the University.
  • The applicant has a close association with the University, as determined by the Executive Dean of the relevant College or, for applicants not linked to a particular College, by the Vice-Chancellor.
  • It is expected that applicants will already be research active, having experience of publishing their research outputs in recognised journals or other professional publications within the field.

You will need to gain 60 taught module credits (inclusive in the tuition fee) in order to complete the requirements of DPhil . This will provide you with an opportunity to develop your subject-specific expertise and professional skills.

There are also researcher development workshops on offer to prepare you for every step of your DPhil journey (and your career beyond), which are delivered by the Doctoral Academy and included in the tuition fee.

Professional Doctorate (Prof Doc)

A Prof Doc typically takes between four to six years of part-time study, up to a maximum of seven years.

UWE Bristol’s Prof Doc programmes are designed to provide doctoral level studies leading to a professional qualification.

Credit-bearing modules and your thesis

The structure of each of the Prof Doc programmes varies, but each programme is comprised of a taught element, where students complete a number of credit-bearing modules through workshops and assignments, and a research element involving the submission of a thesis and examination by viva voce.

Word length for the Prof Doc thesis varies according to discipline and is generally about 35,000 words for engineering, creative practice and science subjects, or up to 60,000 for other areas.

There is a requirement of 120–270 credits at Masters level that are built into the taught element of each programme.

My IKEEP project with Albotherm

Through the ikeep programme , students undertake an intrapreneurial training programme, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to work in industry through subsequent paid project placements with smes. .

Afrida, who is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Project Management, recently completed one of our IKEEP project placements with Albotherm and told us about her experience.

Can you tell us about your IKEEP project?

A photo of Afrida, smiling in the sunshine and leaning against a stone wall.

I secured a project placement with Albotherm; a start-up specializing in advanced material technology who have developed a groundbreaking solution that adjusts its opacity based on temperature, utilizing sunlight to cool buildings passively during hot weather conditions.

The focus of my project was to facilitate the commercial market launch of this material and to provide insights into potential market integration for Albotherm’s technology. My responsibilities included exploring three key market segments: skylights for industrial warehouses, office windows, and glass facades for commercial buildings.

What new skills did you learn from doing IKEEP?

During my placement at Albotherm, I delved into various aspects of the business, honing essential skills along the way. From conducting in-depth market research to forging connections with stakeholders, creating surveys, and tackling challenges head-on, each experience added layers to my entrepreneurial toolkit.

Navigating through obstacles demanded adaptability and resilience and these experiences have equipped me with a solid foundation and instilled in me the confidence to pursue my own entrepreneurial ventures in the future.

What challenges did you overcome?

The main challenge during the placement was collecting survey responses. Despite efforts to engage with over 40 construction companies, the response rate was disappointing. Recognising the urgency to gather insights, I turned to an alternative approach: conducting expert interviews.

Embracing this change required adaptability and tested my resilience and problem-solving abilities. Navigating through setbacks with determination, I sought out experts in the field to gain valuable insights. This shift in approach allowed us to gather information and delve deeper into the industry landscape.

A photo of Afrida smiling on the beach.

What would you say to other students considering enrolling in the IKEEP programme?

As an international postgraduate student, juggling a busy one-year program, getting hands-on experience can be challenging, but IKEEP changed the game for me. The workshop sessions were super engaging and made the whole process of finding a placement feel less daunting. Plus, when it came time to apply what I learned during the placement, it all just clicked.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of organizations we could apply to. After some searching, I landed on one that perfectly matched my expertise. I sharpened my existing skills and picked up some new ones that I’m itching to put into action in my next professional adventure. So, if you’re after a real-world experience that is manageable alongside your studies, I’d give the IKEEP program a shot.

PHD in Physics

Physics phd program.

Upon completion of the PhD Program, graduates will be able to lead efforts in academia and industry in the areas of condensed matter physics, applied physics and materials science. The graduates receive their degree having made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in a particular area of research. Courses and seminars provide necessary background in the basic principles, methods and theories of physics. Initial research emphasis will be in the energy sciences, biophysics, and information sciences with the intent to leverage significant research infrastructure investment recently established under the Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center at Binghamton University.

Most of the basic graduate courses in a student's program should be taken during the first year of residence. Proficiency in Solid State Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Thermodynamics and Communication Skills will be attained through classroom study, research and teaching.

The requirements for the doctoral degree include a total of at least twenty-four credit hours of course study (six to eight courses) and at least twenty-four additional credits of dissertation work. The specific course requirements will be determined in consultation with the student's guidance committee (a committee consisting of three Physics faculty members, one of whom is the student's principal advisor). These course requirements must be approved by the graduate program committee, and will normally include those expected for the Masters degree in Physics.

PHYS 572 – Solid State Physics

PHYS 592 – Communications

PHYS 631 – Statistical Mechanics I

Most of the basic graduate courses in a student's program should be taken during the first year of residence. Proficiency in Solid State Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Thermodynamics and Communication Skills will be attained through classroom study, research and teaching. To advance to doctoral candidacy, each student will be required to demonstrate competency in these core areas via a written Qualifying Exam and through the oral defense of a written research proposal. Students will, under the guidance of a faculty member, conduct independent research publishable in an archival journal, and communicate their results in dissertation and presentation forms (PHYS 592). All students will be required to write a dissertation and defend it in a public oral defense before their guidance committee.

Structure/Duration

Students will generally enroll full-time and complete the degree in four to six years. Typically this will involve two semesters of first year graduate courses and a teaching assistantship in introductory Physics courses. All graduate students in Physics attend and participate in seminars presented by fellow students, faculty, and visiting scientists, and attend professional meetings (PHYS 501). The second year in the program may be seen as transitional, including elective courses and potentially a second year of a teaching assistantship, with a growing focus on a research problem. By the end of the second year, the preliminary examination, including a presentation of a proposed dissertation topic, is completed. Dissertation research, writing a dissertation and a public defense complete the degree requirements.
