Using a School News Program to Promote Positivity During the Pandemic
An elementary school newscast is bringing kids together and giving them a reason to smile during a tough year.
This year, our school reopened on a hybrid schedule, which resulted in a bizarre combination of excitement, joy, anxiety, and grief over how drastically “back to school” had changed. We were back together, but only halfway, and many of our students had opted for full-time virtual school. Even on the days that students enjoyed being together, they were masked, separated by plexiglass, and restricted to air hugs and elbow bumps. Social and emotional learning rose to a whole new level of importance, but establishing a real connection was more difficult than ever.
For us, our morning news program became an important piece of the puzzle.
Increasing Student Engagement and Setting a Positive Tone
It feels normal: While we celebrated the innovation and resilience of our students and staff in adapting to hybrid learning, we found surprising comfort in the things that didn’t have to change. The school news looks and sounds like it always has. We say the Pledge of Allegiance and hear the lunch choices before we get to work. That familiarity has done wonders for our sense of security in a changed environment.
It provides a shared experience, even when we aren’t physically together: Sharing video links via Google Classroom helped fractured classes feel connected during hybrid instruction. With classes learning and traveling in “family groups” during face-to-face instruction, for many students, the morning news is the only glimpse they get of classrooms and grade levels outside of their own. Students could start their e-learning days at home in the same way that their classmates were starting in the school building, and our students in virtual school could watch with their online classes as well.
It’s a collaborative project that we can do safely: As a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) school, we take a great deal of pride and joy in group challenges and hands-on projects. As we find ways to help students safely collaborate in the classroom, the school news was one low-risk way to bring teamwork back.
It’s fun, and we all need that right now: Our school news helps us to start each day on a positive note. We announce and celebrate student achievements. We include a “Joke of the Day” segment and a blooper reel on Fridays. These shared laughs are some of the most valuable content that we pack into our broadcasts, lightening the load in this emotionally heavy time.
Another positive aspect of this project is that a school news program doesn’t have to cost much in terms of your budget or instructional time. Top-of-the-line video and sound equipment are nice, but not necessary for success. We record with an iPad Mini and a plug-in microphone. But a smartphone or a laptop with a camera is all you really need.
Strategies and Resources to Start a School Newscast
Apps like Green Screen by Do Ink and web-based resources like Animoto are great for making a low-budget production look more professional. I use the Green Screen app to add a newsroom background image to our broadcast and Animoto to create a quick intro for our show. My actual green screen is several yards of inexpensive green fabric that hangs on the wall. Green paper or a painted green wall would also work with the app. Again, these apps add nice, extra effects to our videos, but neither is a necessity. The school news can be just as impactful if students film themselves with a laptop on a desk.
Social distancing is required—and completely manageable—while filming the news. All students and classes are invited to participate. Some days, my news crew is a small group of seven or eight students, but often the whole class (up to 18 students) will come in to participate or observe. Everyone who wants to be on camera gets the chance. Even when working with an entire class on a recording, I film only one student at a time. Other students sit a minimum of six feet apart throughout the classroom and keep their masks on until they are seated at the news desk. Each student sits in their own chair (or stands) behind the news desk, which is wiped down to sanitize between takes.
Pre-Covid, our news was part of a fifth-grade club, which could meet only twice a week. We filmed everything in advance out of necessity. This year, I’ve opened the morning news up to all grades and classes. With every grade level operating on a different schedule, recording in advance is still the best fit for our needs. Teachers can request specific days and times to film via a Google form, and I schedule times with teachers as I receive them. Most classes record the news for the following day. This gives me plenty of time to edit and send video links to teachers.
I send all prerecorded news videos to our teachers and post them on our school website for our virtual families to access as well. Google Drive and YouTube are easy ways to share videos (but make sure you have parent permission before doing so!). With YouTube, I set all of our videos to be unlisted. That way, anyone with access to the link can view it, but they are not searchable.
Editing your video doesn’t have to be complicated. When our production was run almost entirely by fifth graders, they used Movie Maker (which has been updated to Windows Photos on newer Windows devices) for editing because it was fairly easy to learn and accessible on student laptops. I continue to use it myself, because it allows me to easily combine videos from multiple sources. If you are using an Apple device, iMovie works similarly.
Our school news program hasn’t solved all of our problems, but it has had a huge impact on our morale as we face each new, challenging day. It’s a low-cost and efficient way to promote student engagement, collaboration, and social and emotional growth in a time when they are greatly needed.

Six top tips to engage primary students with news writing
Producing quality news writing in the primary classroom can be a challenge: here’s our guide on how to get great results
When we talk to teachers who struggle to get good results with news writing, we always ask what their students have been writing about. Most often they’ve been given tasks such as ‘Report on a UFO landing in the school playground’, or ‘rewrite a fairytale in the style of a news report’. (These would no doubt challenge many trained adult journalists!).
However, we know that children are regularly exposed to real news, particularly online . This news can feel exciting, worrying, sad, or heartwarming, but it never feels like a fairytale. Asking children to write ‘fake news reports’ can also be confusing when trying to teach them to be wary of ‘fake news’.
At NewsWise we’ve seen that when children are asked to write about real news events, they produce better writing. They are also much more motivated! Here are six top tips for turning your reluctant writers into news enthusiasts.
1) Keep it real
Get your students to write about real events in their school or local area, or encourage them to engage with global news.
Ask children to report on something happening at school (a guest visitor, a new ‘vegan lunch day’ in the canteen), or a local issue (shops closing in the high street, a new park).
Ask children to write about a local perspective on a national or international issue (coronavirus, climate change, Brexit).
Plan opportunities for your students to conduct real interviews – they could talk to anyone from the head teacher to a local MP!
This is also a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of considering both sides of a story, and understanding the difference between fact and opinion . We’ve even heard of our lesson on different viewpoints being used to resolve playground football disputes!
2) Keep it positive
We are all exposed to a lot of negative news, particularly during the coronavirus crisis. Producing upbeat news reports can help children rebalance their world view by becoming more aware of positive events. Our Happy News activity encourages children to script, report, and share their positive news.
3) Create an authentic experience
Why not transform your classroom into a newsroom ? Your students will gain team work, time-management, and critical thinking skills.
There are plenty of free and easy ways to get that newsroom feel. Try getting your students to make their own press passes and a sign for the classroom door. Could you borrow some clocks and set them to different timezones? Make sure you assign roles . Who will subedit the reports? Who is in charge of design? Of course, you can act as chief editor!
Set students short tasks with tight deadlines for an authentic newsroom experience. Teachers are often amazed that NewsWise students are able to critically assess reports, research and script a balanced news story from scratch and rehearse and perform a news bulletin, all within a couple of hours.
4) Immerse students in news
Many children cannot access news at home, particularly those in disadvantaged areas . How can we expect children to write in the style of news reports without exposure to news media? Remember that your classroom might be the only source of news for your students. Make time for them to watch, listen to, or read the news.

5) Give pupils agency
Children are more motivated to write if the topic interests them. NewsWise teachers who let children choose their own writing topics even reported children asking to continue working over lunchtime!
Of course, as chief editor of your newsroom, you can veto any topic you consider too risky. Every newsroom has an editorial meeting where story ideas are discussed and the best ideas are taken forward. Could you do the same?
Empowering your pupils to report on real issues that matter to them will give them a unique voice in their school and community. As Roz, a teacher in London, told us:
It was watching them link what they were doing in class to wider issues outside our school community which I found the most gratifying. For me, so much of what NewsWise brings up in its delivery is to do with exploring what sort of person you want these children to become: compassionate, interested, resilient, critical, brave, truthful.
6) Create a purpose
Real news deserves a real audience. Get your students to create a school newspaper, take over the school newsletter for a week, or organise a presentation event for their families. You can even send your students’ writing to NewsWise to feature on our website!

Starter/baseline assessment
Pupils spend five minutes reviewing their pyramid plan, to remind themselves of the order of information in their reports, while also referring to their original news report plans for detailed information.
As a class, recap the structural and language features of news reporting. How will you begin your news report? Which information will you include in the middle section? How many quotes will you include? How will you end your report? What do you need to remember about using paragraphs in news reports?
Learning activity
Pupils write the first draft of their news reports, using the planning sheets which they created in previous lessons.
Give pupils deadlines throughout the session to replicate the newsroom experience. You may wish to split the sections of the report into separate tasks with a deadline for each one, eg: 5W introduction; quotes and reported speech from interviews; additional research on the topic; final paragraph.
Refer back to the class News report toolkit, as well as the Model news reports and News reporting language word banks from lesson 11 to support pupils to write in an authentic news report style and structure.

Note: pupils do not need to add ‘page furniture’ at this point - this happens in lesson 15 .
Pupils share their news reports with a partner, providing feedback to each other based upon the following questions: which language features have they included in their news report? Have they begun their news report with a 5 W introduction? Have they included interesting information? Have they started a new paragraph for every new point? Is the news report balanced ? Do you think it is a truthful and fair report? Why?

Core knowledge and skills
In this lesson, pupils write the first draft of their news reports (without the ‘page furniture’).
Conduct the lesson as a writing lesson, in line with your usual practice. Remind pupils of the structural and language features of news reporting by referring to your class’s ‘news report toolkit’.
Use success criteria to remind pupils of the key features of a news report, including: inverted pyramid structure - beginning with the most important information, moving on to additional interesting details and quotes, finishing with what might happen next/similar stories that have happened before/a really good quote that sums up the story; 5 Ws introduction, starting with Who or What, not When; short paragraphs; concise, formal language; written in the third person and past tense; reported and direct speech; relative clauses.

What follows assumes that you know what the Primary program is and how it operates.
Once a year the Primary children present what they have learned in a special Sacrament Meeting known as the Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation. Members often look forward to this event. There is always something sweet in hearing children speak basic gospel truths and sing their songs with the simple faith characteristic of the young and innocent.
If you serve in the Primary, then you will help the children and other leaders prepare and present this annual event. What follows below should help.
Guidelines for the Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation
Obviously, the Handbook is the first place you should go for guidance. All Primary information is contained in Chapter 11 . The brief guidance that exists for the Sacrament presentation can be found in 11.5.4 .
The presentation should take place sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. It should showcase what the children have learned in Primary; so it makes sense to have it towards the end of the year.
After the Sacrament has been administered , the presentation can take up the remaining time in Sacrament meeting, but it does not have to. If you only have a small number of children in Primary, a shorter program may be just fine.
Try not to think of this event as a performance or a celebration. It should be an opportunity for the children to share and demonstrate what they have learned.
What You Should Do in the Presentation
The Presentation takes place under the general direction of the bishopric. One of the bishop's counselors should be assigned to oversee the Primary and work closely with Primary leaders. He should certainly be involved in planning and executing the presentation.
Preliminary meetings should be held with him to plan the presentation. Once finished, he must approve the final plan. He should always be involved in guiding the Primary program and especially the annual presentation.
Each year the Church issues a yearly Outline for Sharing Time . This Outline should be the foundation for the yearly Sacrament presentation as well. The Sharing Time themes should provide the content.
Singing should be a major part of the presentation. The Church provides all the songs and resources that should be used. Every child can participate in singing these songs and every Primary child ages 3-11 should.
Approved aspects of the presentation include children doing the following:
- Reciting scripture passages
- Singing in small groups
- Sharing testimonies
- Brief messages from Primary leaders and the counselor assigned oversight of the Primary.
What You Should Not Do in the Presentation
Images and visual aids are not approved for the presentation. This may take some getting used to. There are numerous images and visual aids provided in the Outline for Sharing Time. Although they can be used during regular Primary time and to teach the children throughout the year, they should not be used for the annual presentation.
In addition, costumes or any type of media presentation should not be used either. They are not consistent with the reverence or solemnity that should prevail in Sacrament meeting.
Music is a Key Focus of the Presentation
Primary music leaders and accompanists should plan for , teach and direct all the music for Sharing Time throughout the year, and during the presentation.
Besides following all the general music guidelines that exist, they must follow the additional guidelines for the Primary. Handbook guidance is found in Chapter 14 . Specific guidance and resources for Primary music leaders is online.
Some musical instruments, songs and teaching resources that are appropriate for teaching children are not appropriate in Sacrament meeting.
Tips to Make the Presentation Go Smoothly
- Time the songs, talks and everything else. Know how long it takes for children to get into position and so forth.
- Ask teachers to remain seated during the songs so that children can see and be seen.
- Involve parents and make certain they have enough time to help their children with their parts of the presentation.
- Make certain all leaders, music people and teachers have a copy of the program.
- Have someone manage the podium, raising and lowering it and assisting the children with their speaking parts, especially if they take fright at the last moment.
- Rehearse the presentation in the chapel, so the children feel comfortable. However, this should not take up what should be classroom time.
- Use the disability resources the Church provides in order to accommodate all children to participate in the presentation.
When it is all over, praise the children for how well they did. Meet with others to determine what could be improved in the future.
